Hey guys,
I bought one a few years ago. As you probably discovered, this is a very low impact machine. If you lean forward you can actually get a pretty fair pec and tri workout. Conversely, leaning back will allow you to work your biceps(spelling) and lats.
I gotta tell ya. In the last year or so I only use mine now and then, mainly with very little resistance in order to warm up my muscles real good.
Remember to keep your abs engaged.
Finally, to quote ocpanther65:'...pop in a video...' or some beats and get going.
Thumbs up for the Gazelle.
Body for Life Forum Message by AngRoCamp (136 posts) at 01:51 AM
Hey there! I started with a lot of weight to lose too, and had some of your same concerns. I've used the Gazelle a little bit but didn't really feel like it was doing anything for me. I prefer the eliptical machine. It's very kind to your joints because it's basically no impact. You're moving for sure, but no pounding the pavement (or treadmill). For a really intense workout w/o the impact I love the eliptical. A bike is another great no-impact way to go. I'm not comfortable on a regular bike seat though, and just don't feel like I'm getting the same intense workout on the bike as I do the eliptical, so I don't use it often for my HIIT cardio. Hope that helps. WELL DONE for starting your BFL program!!! I'm proud of you!
And for what it's worth... I never in a billion years thought that I would ever enjoy cardio, but I LOVE it now, and even with my extra weight, because I'm losing weight and I'm more physically fit, I'm able to do more impact workouts now (like *gasp* running!!!!) Good luck to you!!! ~Ang

I LOVE my Gazelle. I had a compound fracture of my tib/fib back in 2000 and I cannot tolerate "jarring" motions. You can get a fantastic workout and burn quite a few calories also.

I am currently breastfeeding my three month old son, and I'm starting challenge number 1 tomorrow. I'd like to stay as true as possible to the program, but I don't want to compromise my supply. What modfications should I make to my diet? TIA!
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (80 posts) at 11:22 PM
I think the diet is a healthy one for breastfeeding because it is balanced. You will be drinking lots of water too which is important. You may need more calories. I found that while breastfeeding, if I did not eat enough, my body held onto weight. Your body wants you to burn as little as possible so you will have enough resources/energy to make milk. It is really a balancing act. I think you have to play with it. I craved and loved dairy products while nursing. If you need them, just go low fat. I think you should do fine on this program. You may notice that your milk doesn't taste good after your workouts. My baby didn't love the milk right after a work out.
Can you write up a couple of days of your eating plan and run it by your OB or pediatrician? They may have some suggestions.

I've tried several of the Yahoo BFL groups and find that 90% of the messages are ads for getrichquick stuff, etc. that have nothing to do with fitness. BFL-Tracker must be able to weed out these annoying posts and stick to what we are here for--fitness and good health. Thanks BFL Tracker!!!! Jim.

For at least 2 weeks out of the month,I want to eat every thing in sight.Nothing seems to satisfy me, so I keep craving and eating, and eating and eating. I don't even buy junk food, so I can have "my fix". Maybe I should buy some foods for those wonderful 2 weeks. Any ideas? I am constantly tired for this amount of time also, can't wake up in time to do anything, but get dressed and go to work, then by the time I get home, I am too tired to do any workout. Is there has a vitamin or something to take for energy that doesn't make your heart race and give you panic attacks?
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (80 posts) at 10:14 PM
Hmmm. Have you tried kicking the dog?
Just kidding. How about planning ahead and having tons of "free foods" like carrot sticks, celery, salads. I know, It's boring. But if you just have to be eating...grab the free stuff. Drinking all of your water should help. Having a filling breakfast (lots of egg whites) will help curb your appetite. I think the bars can be a chocolate substitute too if you are absolutely craving chocolate.
As far as energy goes, do you take a mulit-vitamin now? You should take one daily so you have what you need all month long. Doing your exercise should increase your energy, not drain you. If you are new to this, I think you will find you will get through your pms "better" while on this program than you have in the past. A clean diet helps as does the steady exercise.

I just started taking Phosphagen Creatine, and this a.m I drank some 20 min before my ubwo, and became so ill to my stomach, I was on the verge of barfing many times. Has this happened to anyone, any suggestions other than to take it like an hour before I work out, because I already get up at 4 am to workout, and getting up any earlier is out of the question. Thanks for the advice :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Flash (769 posts) at 09:32 AM
Sounds awful!
I read somewhere that you don't need to take creatine before your workouts because (a.) it takes awhile to get through your system and won't get to your muscles in time to affect that particular workout, and (b.) it can affect your stomach. So I take it post-workout. (And only on weight-training days.)
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (816 posts) at 10:19 AM
Some people express stomach discomfort when taking creatine monohydrate. When I first started taking it, I realized I was taking a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon which really messed me up :)
At your bodyweight, you might want to try using .5 teaspoon after your workout. Even at that dosage its still more than you would get using betagen. 2.5g vs. 2g Hope that helps.
Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (186 posts) at 10:41 AM
Thanks, I will try that Chuck.

And make sure to drink extra water. This is a common problem. You are dumping a ton of sugar into your empty little stomach. :)
This is similar to problems some runners ahve eating high carb foods before a run. You may just need to play with it a bit.

I'm usually not one that needs a guy in my life or I fall to pieces...this time he just really broke my heart.
But I love what you guys are saying about being happy and content with yourself and not worrying about it. I need to do just that...(though love your idea snowboardingfairy about going out with a hotter, nicer guy...that was hilarious!)
What you guys said reminds me of my favorite line in "Cool Runnings" (the Disney movie about the Jamaican Bobsled team) where one of the athletes askes their coach about winning the gold medal, and how important it was to win the gold. The coach said, "If you are not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it." I think what he says can apply to relationships, too. If you are not a complete, whole person without the relationship, what makes you think that other person completes you? I think the other person needs to complement you, not complete you. (The quote, I think, fits in with attaining your best body - it will never be enough if you don't work through some of you other issues as well. Being skinny doesn't solve everything...)
ANYWAY...(wow, that was long) Just wanted to say...thanks again!
(Oh...and I wanted to tell you guys...I was at a New Year's Eve party last night and this guy I just met just randomly asked me out, right in front of the ex!! Yeah, that felt good...;)

I saw them on Larry King and she must of been really embarrassed when she found out that what she thought was an exclusive relationship wasn't...poor thing. Tony Robbins was on right after them and made a comment about how bad it must of been finding that out in front of millions of people. OUCH!

Ya, Larry was asking them a bunch of questions about them dating and such then says "so, you're exclusive then?" She piped up right away and said yes and then Matt says "well no" and then she said "you mean you're dating other people?" it went on from there and Larry said he thought Matt was just messing with her - trying to smooth things over I guess. Gawd I sound like a gossip don't I? I was just so embarrassed for her.

Body for Life Forum Message by eve36 (5 posts) at 04:48 PM
I've just had my fourth free day.
My first free day, I ate regular BFL all day, then splurged at my husband's xmas party at a fancy restaurant. I was still very conscious of eating well, but allowed myself some treats and didn't go overboard. It was my first, and I have/had a problem with overeating, so I was nervous about letting go after a whole week of eating well!
The other 3 free days I have mostly indulged all day long, but just when I feel like it. I'll put treats away for that day, and I look forward to it.
I do find that eating sweets makes it harder for me the next day - the cravings are tougher!!!
One thing that works for me is to have some plain fat-free and sugar-free yogurt with a few nuts and a bit of Splenda, or a chocolate BFL bar for a meal.
Of course, most of the battle is in my head, but the longer I'm living the BFL way, the easier it gets overall.
For my next day off, I think I will try planning my meals that day too.
One suggestion though is to avoid sweets on your day off if you know they'll cost you another few days on the program. If you MUST have chocolate, you could limit yourself to very fine, very expensive chocolate in small portions. Not so accessible, and it may feel like more of a treat. And take the time to savour it!
You're doing well though, and you're on the right track. Keep at it! It's just a little setback that you will overcome - we learn important lessons from all of this!
good luck!

Once you have mastered the dip and you are ready for an even bigger challenge...try putting your feet on a stability ball while you do the dips on a bench. Make sure you are ready for this before you try it. You will ache for days if done correctly...if done incorrectly you will ache for months!!
Body for Life Forum Message by decorator70 (3 posts) at 07:42 PM
Be careful with this. ocpanther65 is right, you can injure yourself. I would ask an employee to show you how to properly use it. Also, I would recommend that you do a one hour session with a trainer to take you through equipment that you may have questions about. It's well worth the money.
Body for Life Forum Message by decorator70 (3 posts) at 07:35 PM
Wrecky,
It depends on what you mean by "lower ab exercise". Your abdominals are one muscle group - so when you do abdominal exercise you actually work the entire group. You can "feel" it more in one area over the other, but you are exercising the entire area at the same time. The obliques are a different area. The reason you don't see results as quickly is because this is an area that we store more fat. All of the exercises that have been recommended will make you "feel" like you are working that area more, but your body will determine where and when the fat comes off. Good luck!! Also, for lower back exercises - give Pilates a try. You would be amazed at how awesome a work out it is. Excellent core strength.

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (80 posts) at 11:43 PM
Well, you keep going. This is "for life". If you quit exercising or go back to eating a diet that doesn't help you produce strong lean muscles, you go back (eventually) to where you started. You can always go a tad harder or get a bit stronger. And if you don't want to you can maintain by doing the exercises and eating the same clean diet and add a few calories so you don't continue to lose. I have found, you don't need to add much to stay the same. If you let yourself get to comfy or add more than a few calories...you are on the path going in the other direction. People come back to this site who have gone back to their ways following a successful challenge. You just can't stop exercising and eating well and expect to look and feel fantastic. Everyone who HAS IT is working for it!

You can do calf raises with them in your hands. If balance is a problem just use one in your hand and steady yourself with a handrail or whatever. You can do step ups to a bench or a step. Both types of deadlifts can be done, both stiff legged and standard. The stiff-legged emphasizes the glutes and hamstrings. The traditional deadlift working the quadriceps and the glutes and low back.

Soooooooooo this 19 yr old guy at work said, "oh no your not suppose to up it by 5lbs up it by 10lbs.. umm ok so I tried that. And I had a very rough time with it. I figured for a guy that would be great but for a woman would that be pushing it? Or would 5lb increments be ok and still get results?
Happy New Year everyone.

Up it by what YOU can do. For some it's 10. For some its 5. For some its 2.5.
Do what's right for you - not what people tell you what's right for you.

I agree with Tai, as time goes by I find I can't up my weight by 10 lbs, it's usually 2.5 lbs and I might even have to drop a little a week or so later. It just depends on what you can handle and lift with good form.

Good to have you back sweetie!
I left away from BFL too. I'm restarting tomorrow.
I'm tight on cash and time, so here's my plan.
I'll do 2-3 protein shakes a day. I know they aren't the best, but better than fast food.
I'll take one night on a weekend and cook lots of veggies and meat. I will put them all in containers and section off my fridge for easy access.
I'll have some protein bars on hand in case of emergency.
One of my favorite things to do with the food is to get quick meals. I love the prepackaged chicken strips, tuna and salmon packets, and small cottage cheese containers. Those make things very easy.
Hope this helps. You can do it!

Interesting. I more often tend to find pictures of myself and remember how fat I *thought* I was at that stage of my life, but realize how anxious I am to get back to the way I looked at some of those stages! Our self-perception can really make or break us I think. ~Ang

I came on my forth week too. To funny. Everyone is diffrent, but you already lost a cm in places. That is a great start and it lets you know it is working. The program works and now that your progress has started it just gets better. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion, keep moving forward and you will melt away in no time. If you want to see your change take pictures. I like to do mine every four weeks.

Welcome Eve,
don't be frustrated- everyone is different. Realistically, you may not see weight change for a while. remember, you are taking in lots of water ( about 5lbs per day ) and since you are working muscles, then tend to grow and add weight. Track your measurements and body fat if you can , as a more reliable measure of results.
You can track bodyfat for free on mybodycomp.com or a number of other sites.
If you remove the pressure/ expectations, and just come to enjoy eating healthy and being active- you will get results beyond your imagination! :)
Yours in Health,
Kerry

You fellow BFL'ers are awesome! Thanks for the encouragement & support. Yes, I should concentrate on the positives - I feel healthier, I have no more guilt about overeating or eating badly because I'm eating well, I'm seeing more muscle tone, and my running pace is definitely increasing!
Glad I found this site! Thanks again!

I myself got very frustrated with my first challenge around week 8, because of the lack of pounds being lost. Don't give up and quit. I did and now I'm back at square one. Stick with the program and remember your goals. You can do it, stay strong and focused :) Jessie

Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (2124 posts) at 12:34 PM
This New Year has started bad already. Got an early phone call from my mother, "which I just sent to California" to stay with some friends until she gets back on her feet and gets a job, etc. Well I didn't have a lot of money to send with her up there, but I bought her a plane ticket, gave her just alittle money, sent her $20 cash and a check for $25 to help with groceries, and she calls me this morning, asking for a plane ticket home.??? WHAT?
I can't, first of all I don't have it financially, I didn't even plan on her even coming back to be honest and she was so excited to be going to San Diego and getting off this island... She was so miserable here, no friends of her own, didn't really have her own life... and we were starting to argue a lot,, she sat at home all day, so when I got home, she unloaded, I have Cameron to take care of, pay the bills, prepare for retirement "which is coming REAL soon" and move to wherever????
So to be honest, it was the best thing for both of us, I didn't want our relationship to end up in the gutter, because she couldn't get out, get a job, have her own friends and that was where it was headed. Now she is really mad at me, told me NOT TO EVER HELP HER AGAIN, even if she ended up in the GUTTER DEAD. Now that hurt me, I started to cry,. I know both of us sacrificed to live together, trust me, I know.... But it was time for a change, she went willingly, and now I am in a pinch.
I am hoping that it will work out, she can find a job, get settled,,, and have her own life.. independent,,, but I know, her coming back to Hawaii is not the answer..
WHAT DO I DO? You guys give the best advice and I need it now,, thanks!
Body for Life Forum Message by Buffy-the-FatLayer-Slayer (30 posts) at 12:54 PM
Why does she want to come home?
Of course I don't know what your relationship is like but by letting her come back are you enabling her in some way?
Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (37 posts) at 01:02 PM
Wow, I feel for you.
Why can't your mother get a job? Is she capable of working?
I agree with Buffy about enabling her. Perhaps she needs some "Tough Love" to get her to help herself?
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (2124 posts) at 01:02 PM
She told me that "Mable" the mother of the friend she is staying with, threw a fit and wants her out, well she is the one that invited her to stay with them until she got on her feet, it was an offer from a mutual friend. I think maybe they got into a little argument and she is bailing? She has only been there for a month..
See there, she will HAVE to work, here she can take her time, I am family, and you all know, family are the first ones, sometimes, to take advantage of other family. I am really upset over this. I know if I do let her come home, she will go back to doing exactly the same thing she did before. just clean the house,,, she has no friends here,,, no job. and it is harder here to find a job than in San Diego., atleast they have an outstanding bus service. I just don't know,,, she has been so use to me paying all the bills, now she is on her own,,, I guess reality has hit.
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (2124 posts) at 01:07 PM
Yes my mother is capable of working, she had a job with Mervins and kept it for 3 days, she said it was a work horse job and she just couldn't do it, physically, She is 57 and is pretty good health, no major issues. Just maybe use to me taking care of her,,, she did take care of my son while I was deployed,,, but now she is blaming me for a lot of things, like she sold her truck while I was deployed, didn't ask me? Took my car out of storage and was driving it around, again, didn't ask me... took $$$$$$$ out of my savings 6 separate times to go gambling and of course LOST IT, didn't ask,,,,, I paid for her car insurance, life insurance and medical. As of FEB this year, I will cancel the medical coverage,,, that is why she went to San Diego, to have her own life, get a job, make new friends,,,, and to get her own medical coverage. Well she is blaming me for her selling her truck, quitting her job (cleaning houses)..
so I think it is going to get uglier before it gets better! Any suggestions.
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (994 posts) at 01:15 PM
I wish I knew what to tell you. That is a hard issue to deal with. I think sticking to your decision would be the best and keep encouraging her that she can do well on her own. Even if she gets mad at you because your not giving her what she wants. Change is not always easy, but this is a good thing for her to become more independent & grow. I wish you the best. I know it must not be easy being family and this being your mother. I wish you luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by Buffy-the-FatLayer-Slayer (30 posts) at 01:22 PM
Me again...my first thought is you will be enabling her if you go right back to the same situation. I understand that you feel an obligation because she's your Mom but where do you draw the line? Why don't you ask HER to lay out what her options are and what her plans are for the near future, what is SHE going to do to about it? Maybe by having her think about it and vocalizing it she will better understand what she needs to do in order to get her life together.
That's all I got.
Body for Life Forum Message by twinmom (327 posts) at 01:38 PM
Udenia, this is a tough one. I agree that if she come back and lives with you, that will not motivate her to support herself.
Do you think that she may change her mind after she cools down and stay in San Diego?
Can you tell her you have no $$$ right now and that you will try your best to save up for a plane ticket so she will have to stay where she is and hope that she decides that she likes it there and want to stay????
Or ask her to get a job so she can save up her $$$ to come back but tell her that she will have to get her own place???
I do not know...this is a tough one, especially beacuse it is family.
Good luck and know that you are in my prayers.
Annette

To be perfectly honest, Cameron and I are doing better that she is gone. I love her and what she tried to do with Cameron, but she was hurting more than she was helping, sitting around all day, complaining about Cameron, not supporting my disciplinary standards, and especially with an Autist child. She needs to be on her own, she needs to earn her own money, and right now it is tight for me, here, she had a roof over her head, a bed to sleep in, food and everytime we went out, I paid for the both of us, so I can say that she probably got alittle too comfortable with that, especially with me retiring soon, I need to concentrate on my son and me.....

This is so hard for me, I want to know in my heart that I did the right thing, even though it might not seem like it right now. That means so much to me, but when I think about it, it seems that I was the only child that ever did anything for her, my brother loaned some money to her, a couple of times, and he cut off all communication with her after that,. I thought that was wrong, she is still his mother and mine, so I do not want that... I am hoping that this all works out for the best...I am going to my B/Fs house and pray with her on this. thank you all,,,,

I say practice tough love. About three years ago I had my sister-in-law and her husband stay with us because they had made some bad decisions. I did not treat them like house guests, I treated them like someone I was helping out, (i.e. I had certain rules they had to live by in order for me to feed them and give them a place to live such as: They BOTH would actively look for a job every single day.) There was not going to be any sitting around the house watching TV while I went to work. In short, I was willing to help them so long as they showed me they were willing to help themselves.
Well, eventually they decided that they didn't like my harsh rules and started argueing with me. I told them, "Hey any time your tired of the rules and don't want stay here, the front door is right there" After talking for about 30 minutes, they packed up their stuff and left.
Guess what? They managed to do just fine on their own. They found a place to stay, and miracle or miracles...they BOTH found jobs.
Just make sure that if she comes back that you are helping her to get on her feet, and not enabling her to live off of you.
That's my $.02 worth
Brian

Udenia, your mother is in good health (as per one of your posts) and CAN work.
Be careful of family members that take advantage of you! I generally let my intuation tell me if someone's trying to "use" me. Her taking YOUR hard earned money out of your savings account for GAMBLING is enough for me to say, LET HER BE A GROWN UP AND FIGURE HER WAY OUT OF THIS! Every single time she's going to be faced with a problem, she's going to run to you!
HOWEVER, I've never been in this type of situation and I cannot say that I, myself, wouldn't be taking her back. Just know that whatever your decision, it also affects your son.
My father is in a terrible situation right now, and not by choice, he's got cancer and started chemo therapy earlier this week...he spends $400 a week on meds and treatments and now he's down to $8.00 in his savings account!! He's faced with trying to get goverment assistance or start working (enough hours) to pay for his treatments. He DOESN'T want family to help. He says he will figure it out or he will STOP treatments altogether (which I won't allow him to do that! I'll try to help him if I ).
I'm telling you this story because I want to help you assess your situation and see what you can do for her.
P.s. I learned through Dave Ramsey that you NEVER want to "Loan" money to a friend or family member, it's just asking for trouble! If you give anything to your mother, consider it a "GIFT" and dont' expect it back (even if she says she will give the money back to you).

My Mama used to say, If I give it to you, then it's yours, If I lead it to you even if it's a penny, you should pay it back.
and rules have to be set for Cameron, Arutist or not, you have to set goals, If your mom comes back ask her to get her own place close by and get a job, she can be on her own, meet friends at work and be close enough to help you with Cameron.
Good Luck, Love Linda

Linda, she can't get her own place here, just too expensive in Hawaii, that is why I said San Diego was a better choice for her,,, I need to talk to Dee Dee and find out what is going on... I do not feel that letting her come home is the answer...
Body for Life Forum Message by eSteve (151 posts) at 11:27 PM
Hey Udenia,
Sounds like a very tough situation to me! It's hard to put myself in your shoes, but here are some things to consider...
1) You only have 1 mom, and while she may not understand the stresses she puts on you, I don't know if I could just leave her out there to fend for herself. It would be a shame if you spend any amount of time not speaking to her (even if it's her who is making that decision)
2) You have to be honest with yourself first, then try to have some very honest discussions with your mom. If she is not in the right mindset to overcome her situation, she will struggle to get on her feet, and resent you every step of the way. You have to be realistic to think if she is mentally capable of turning things around -- because if she is depressed and not focused on a better life, she will just flounder. Too often people just sit and do nothing in a difficult situation, because they are overcome with depression and lack of self-confidence. You have to really think if she has the right support mentally to get out of her situation.
3) There is a difference between surviving and thriving. To thrive, a person needs hope for a really great life -- something to look forward to and get excited about. A purpose for life. Without hope, life becomes a struggle no matter what the situation -- everything becomes impossible. With hope -- anything is possible. So I guess what I'm suggesting is that you have to find out what goes on within your mom's head and find something she can get excited about...maybe she needs to start dating again, or pursue a dream she always thought about. Where there is a will there is a way. Each person needs to find their purpose in life - even our parents.
4) Create a win-win scenario - work together to achieve goals you set together. Now if she is not open to such things, you will have to put yourself and your son first - so you have to give her something to commit to. She has to be honest with herself and realize the strain she puts on your life -- it will be tough if she doesn't realize it or ignores this, so hopefully it's something you can openly discuss.
I'm not saying to bring her back to Hawaii for sure, but if you do - you have to create an environment for you all to thrive - make the most out of your lives -- at her age she has so much more life to live -- so why not both enter the BFL Challenge and try to win it in 2006? If you work together towards a positive goal, you will find that things will work themselves out...
Just some thoughts -- it's easy for me to blab about things I don't have to deal with, so take everything with a grain of salt...best of luck to you!
Think positive.
-Steve

It is a difficult situation. Are you an only child? I believe sticking to your guns is the best immediate solution so don't bring her back to HI. You have to watch out for you & Cameron 1st and foremost. Once you know the two of you are ok, then charity, even to a Mom, can happen. You have your life, she has hers. We'll pray that a permanent solution to this issue comes to you quickly.
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (2124 posts) at 11:57 PM
I appreciate all of your advice and I spoke with her today, had a heart to heart.. We both know letting her come back is NOT the answer, she was miserable, thus making me miserable. Cameron is my #1 responsibility.. She is capable of working, the market is not good in Hawaii for outsiders.. Were we live, she would have to walk 2-3 miles just to get to where she could catch the bus,, not a good situation. I have looked at my budget and I was able to find some money to send to her and thus some for the 15th. I sent one check for a BUS PASS so she can get out and find that job, get to that job, the other was rent/food. I can only pay for her so long and NO I am not the only child, but my sister can't find her butt if it wasn't attached and my brother does not talk to our mother because the last time they did, she asked for money so I am stuck with helping her get back on her feet and it shouldn't be my sole responsibility, however, I do appreciate all of your prayers and I will pray myself tonight....

O.K. guys I just finished up with C4.I hit it pretty hard, trying a few different things the last two challenges.Only had a few bumps in the road with vacation and the false evacuation in Sept. All in all it was still progress.
Now on to the next challenge, to carry the Torch. I'm in and I'm going back to the BFL basics. I figured I'd go back to the basics every couple of challenges anyway, because long term one can see which program is the most effective. Also Jan. 17 will mark one year I have been practicing this way of life.
As in the words of an infamous poet lol, "What a long strange trip it's been," but a damn good one so far.
So let me get truckin,
Thanks guys,

I read this recently and thought I would share.
I am quoting David Zinczenko
"IS CHANGE POSSIBLE? A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL TELL YOU IT ISN'T.(especially the ones who have had a lot of practice with failure).
And there's somthing to their pessimism: The biggest deterrent to sticking to an exercise plan, or quitting smoking, or starting a new career, is the idea that we've failed in the past, and, hence we're doomed to fail again. But let me propose a new paradigm: Failure is not an option. Failure is a prerequisite.
Those who achieve success are not those who never fail; they are those who learn from failure and move on".
When I read that I thought, makes sense to me.
So I say for those who have failed at BFL in the past, Think back to what made you fail learn from that failure and lets make this new BFL challenge a success.
I have had success with BFL, but I have failed to achieve those rippling abs that I want. I have learned from my failure and now I will have those abs that have been evading me.
Mark my words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rod (New year better bod)
Body for Life Forum Message by twinmom (327 posts) at 01:32 PM
Rod,
I challenge you to both of us achieving those rippled abs. I too have learned from my failures and will achieve them.
So, are you game? Come on, big guy!Anyone else game? The more the merrier.

Rod - I have read something similar before and related to the same premise that success is just not quitting after failures! Great way to look at things, especially for those of us that have faltered from time to time! Thanks for sharing!

How many dang lawyers are there here on BFL-tracker? Besides myself I have identified at least three if not four others here.
Is there something about the law profession that causes people to get out of shape? Actually, there is....hours and hours of sitting on butt reading law book during law school. I would guess that probably 60%-70% of the people I graduated law school with gained quite a bit of weight from when I saw them on the first day of school.
I'm also guessing that this phenomenon is not isolated to the legal profession. :-)

Database Analyst here... Desk job, minimal exercise before BFL,a nd depression and anti-anxioety meds caused my 40 pound weight gain, with the majority of it beginnig once I started the meds. Went off the meds in August 2004 (successfully, yeah!) but guess what???? Weight stayed! With the number of people taking these kind of meds I would think they are a big culprit for a lot of weight gains.

Ok so I posted the official challenge pictures! Wohoooo NOT! I also posted my measurements YIPEE!!! NOT! Wow, yea so it's on folks time to hop on the horse and ride this race! I can honestly say I am excited about beginning this year and scared at the same time. Is it failure or success I am scared of? Hmmmm I'll get back to ya on that one LOL. I think it's the initial pain of the first week. You know the pain in the butt of getting up early. The pain in the butt of doing the cardio in addition with my heavy workouts. Yada yada yada! Though the best part is I am NOT ALONE! I am in great company here. Alright, guys off to do goal assessments for the week!
On a funnier note: OMG I am dying over here. I of course am going through all the motions of pigging out before judgement day. Uggghhhh I really have no idea what possessed me to eat Taco Hell???? I am soooooooooooo looking forward to tomorrow! There is a positive to it all but lordy I feel like YUK YUK right now. LOL. So, I guess we were all in line at the ol' Taco Hell. After today I never want to see Taco Hell again blahhhhh yuk. I swear I bloated up so huge after eating it. Kinda scary to think what in the hell is in that crap. Yup and I still ate it ;-)
Persp: Thats funny cause I remember when I was young and living in LA and there were Taco Lights. The had the white shell and they were so darn good. I never understood why they took the m off the menu lol. Maybe it's because they were not so lite hmmmm... hehehe.

Cheri, my 11th week was christmas week, and day 84 was christmas day. I had lots of bad days in that 11th week. So I don't know if I'm considered to have finished the 12wks or not? how do you decide? Anyway, so I started C2 on Dec26. The next morning I woke up with a stomach virus and couldn't eat or move without vomiting.. so I blew a few more days of workingout and eating. So I"m going to REstart on the 2nd. ?? So I dunno the answer to your question.
Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (344 posts) at 06:37 PM
Cheri write out your goals and have both short and long term. Make sure you know how you want to go about your goal and plan for the obstacales that may get in your way. If you fallow your goals you will get there one day at a time.

Cheri, I want more than anything to finish this challenge too. I made it 8 weeks last time and felt fabulous and looked better than I had in a few years. Life got busy and I got lazy with the planning. Let's face it, it is easier just to not think about it.
I have set mini goals this time and will be changing things about 1/2 way with exercise. Also, I am thinking about buying the BFL success videos that I've heard can be really motivating. I am going to order them at week 5 or 6 to watch when I feel my motivation waning.
We can finish this time!! Good Luck.
Patty

Cheri, I finished C1 with good results. But when it came down to C2, I got so busy and lazy that I just didn't finish. Sometimes it's not lack of motivation but life likes to get in the way.
Being well prepared and planning in advance as well as active participation with the tracker or other support sites are good ways to avoid falling down the rabbit hole. Those were the tools that I used to complete C1 and it worked. So I'll be applying them to C3 starting tomorrow.
Good Luck!!!!

I myself have also got 8 weeks into the program and stopped, why??? I guess a new job, motherhood, etc. No more excuses this year. Life will always get in the way, it's how you handle it the matters. I continue to put my needs and goals on the back burner to take care of things and I refuse to do that anymore. I plan to finish the program and meet my goals. Failure is not an option!!! Great Luck to everyone, let's get out there and kick butt. Jess :)
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1525 posts) at 07:17 PM
Cheri - I think this is a good question and worth some reflection. Personally, if I don't continuously recognize when goals are met and always re-evaluate and set new goals to work towards, things become mundane and that driving force is not really there. Planning and purpose will keep you on track. Don't let it get boring, set new goals for yourself, write them down and read them often. I am going through a training session for a new business I am starting right now and there is a statistic that is very interesting. If you write down your goals, there is a 70% chance that you will attain them (actually, I think people who are BFL'rs probably average higher than that). If you don't write them down, 7% chance of attaining them. Write them down, read them often and you will give purpose to your everyday BFL choices!
Ok, now I just have to follow my own advice, because I think it is pretty damn good!!!

Failing a challenge happens for many reasons. Mostly it seems to be a case of priority. People decided that the energy required can better be spent elsewhere.
Make no mistake, this is hard work. If it was easy, then everyone would do it. It's a bit like doing boot camp. Only you can decide to bail when things are hard.
Habits are hard to change, and this can be a HUGE lifestyle change for people. People around you may resist the change. You have to have very strong reasons to change when faced with that level of adversity.
For me the two keys are 1) do not reboot a challenge. There are few valid reasons to stop your challenge. I worked through a leg injury. Julie Whitt the 2004 Inspirational Grand Champion worked through a serious lung infection, others have worked through the loss of a loved one, or natural disaster.
2) Do not seek perfection. It doesn't exist. You are going to get frusterated and quit. Don't set yourself up for failure.
3) Learn to forgive and move on. This may be the lesson people have most trouble with. If you slip, don't go into a 4 day spinout. Acknowledge the slip, accept it, and go forward.
Little baby steps are just as good as monster big steps. :) They all get you where you want to go in the end. The destination is the key here. Not how you get there.

Hi y'all! Although I have done this BFL thing in the past, I am WAY beyond where I ever thought I'd be as a result of stress, laziness, poor planning, and an overall lack of motivation. I really feel like this year is do-or-die for me because I am getting married in August.
Why am I nervous? Well, I'm totally afraid to fail. I'm afraid to shop for my dress- what if I have to get one of the dresses in the plus size line? What if I totally exhaust myself trying to get in shape and I have a nervous breakdown before I even get to the altar? Well, I'm joking a little here, but I honestly am experiencing both excitement to be starting fresh, and fear that once again I won't reach my goals.
Anyone feeling similarly?
Thanks...

Bride to Be, You can either live in fear or live knowing you are working at being the most beautiful bride you can be. August will come no matter what so it is up to you to decide how you will look.
I looked at your picture and I see a very beautiful, young woman. Take advantage of your young metabolism and crank it up. You can do it! Start writing down why you want to and spell out your goals and get to it!! Best of luck to you!

Patty, thanks... sometimes we all get a little out of touch with reality. Your kindness really made me smile! I'm just frustrated at feeling so "out of control." I'm not comfortable in the body I am in now, and its time to change that so I can be more at ease.
Thanks again!

Hi, Just want to add here. It can be done... My wife was also feeling like you 15 years ago. Just set the goal and did it. I know you can too.

I am so ready to go. I have been having sporadic computer service here at home. Dont know what is going on. But I will be back at work soon and will be full steam ahead. Lets keep a team 6 support thread going throughout the challenge. We can do this. We can accomplish our goals and earn every possible point. I want to see us win this thing, but more than that I want to see the individual successes that this challenge is going to bring.
Ready! Set! Go!
Stay in touch, stay strong!!!

Hm...my view of colon cleansing, having gone through one myself is quite different from what's posted here. It was done under strict supervision from a medical doctor (I understand complications can occur during the process). They pass this tube through your anus and water through that tube. That water clears up the intestines. - Very simplified version of what's done.
Prior to that, I had to fast 5 days on juices alone, and the night before the procedure, I had to take some carbon pills.
Having heard of some people dying during the process. My advice is to be very careful with this. The effect is good, though. The system sort of cleared up after that, and I did not have problem going to the bathroom twice a day since. It's been more than a year.

My observation on this subject seems to fall on one of two sides.
The medical profession says that it does more harm then good and the companies that sell the products or procedures rave about the benefits.
Buyer Beware!

(I'm trying to remember who started that thread in the late summer about this.)
I remember that thread and the link to that site...that was absolutely the grossest thing I ever saw...ya, I think I'm going read a different thread now...I'm starting to feel ill.

I have never heard of the medical community saying anything negative about colon cleansing?

Yup did the 1/2 in Oct. If your running for performance and it is not a HIIT day do eat first. There is enough carbs to traine for a 1/2 and fallow BFL. If feel you are going to bonk or your energy drops increase your carbs. You can PM any time with questions. Good luck. I found the 1/2 lots of fun.

Hi there! I'm starting my challenge on the 5th of January. I am perusing other people's profiles and a lot of them have the body fat % listed on there. Is there a website to calculate this or are you getting it from the caliper? Thanks in advance, this is definitely something I would like to know and be able to map my progress!

This is the one I use. Lots of them are different but as long as you use the same one from start to finish you're good.

and i'm so excited! i haven't looked forward to something this much (aside from the births of my children!) in a long time. i love seeing all your before, during and after pics - so inspiring. i've always worked out and watched what i ate, but after 3 pregnancies in 3 years, the ol' bod isn't what she used to be. my adorable daughter will be 2 in march (and is going through the not-so-adorable terrible twos), and my gorgeous baby boy is 3 months old. i am breastfeeding him - does anyone know any modifications i should make? i'll ask on the diet board as well. anyway, i can't wait to get to know all of you more!
happy new year!

I remember Cheryl Muhr (averismommy and BFL finalist who nursed throughout her VERY successful challenge) saying that she didn't really make any modifications, but she did drink LOTS of water and her milk supply was fine. Good luck....starting tomorrow myself too!

Hey everyone. I am starting my first BFL challenge tomorrow. The Eating for Life book in on it's way but I have a breakfast question. I don't have time in the morning to make eggs, and I HATE cottage cheese. What does everyone suggest I eat for breakfast. I know I can eat ham, chicken, etc. But what about a begal and cream cheese, stuff like that.
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (967 posts) at 08:14 PM
Why don't you boil a bunch of eggs and have those for breakfast? You can have 4-5 hard boiled eggs with oatmeal or cream of wheat. Yummy.
Bagels are not worth it, (to me). Too many carbs. Maybe if you do half a bagel. From what I know, cream cheese has about zilch protein and a lot of fat. So, I wouldn't eat that either. 1/2 bagel and hard boiled eggs?
I use Jenny O Turkey bacon alot. I'll cook it ahead of time and put it in baggies. I have that, 2 HB eggs, and a whole grain english muffin. That's a good breakfast too.
Even Kashi cereal isn't all that bad.
You should give cottage cheese another try. I know, I know. I HATED it too. But, I mixed it with yogurt and now I eat it at least once a day. Really is a quick meal, it would help you out if you can handle eating it. Have you tried blending it too to get rid of the curds?
Body for Life Forum Message by hughesmx17 (2 posts) at 08:23 PM
Thanks for the feedback. I didn't think about hard boiled eggs, I do like them that is a GREAT idea for me.
I also never thought about blending the cottage cheese, maybe I will give that a try with some real fruit or yogurt as you said.
You really helped a lot.

Here is what I have for breakfast almost everyday
1 cup fat free milk
1 scoop whey protein powder
3/4 cup dry oatmeal
2 ice cubes
I blend all that up and drink er down. Fast and Yummy. You might have to adjust the portion sizes based on your needs.

Try the very weird sounding pancakes, cottage cheese, egg whites and oatmeal. the recipe is on the web site and in the book.. They are my favorite and I make them up in advance and keep in refridge and micro what I need in morning. then I put sugar free surup or sugar free jelly on them, and roll them up and take to go... YUM.
Body for Life Forum Message by chakakhan (2 posts) at 09:18 PM
hey, that sounds like a good thing to try with the cottage cheese - I DON'T like it either, but I think it's just the texture.
Good luck H, I'm starting tomorrow too!
Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1530 posts) at 10:36 PM
oatmeal and it tastes great for lunch or diner or a snack. Mix in some sugar free jam and mmmmmmm yummy one of my favs and it takes 2 minutes in the micro plus I cook a cup of egg whites in the micro in 3 minutes 5 minutes and a full meal.
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (994 posts) at 10:51 PM
You can take 4 eggwhites put them in to a blender with 1/3 C. of Oatmeal. Blend until smooth. Put into non-stick skillet (I use my crepe pan) will make a huge pancake. Smear 1 tbs of Natural PB and a small amount of SF syrup. YUM YUMMMMMY!
You can increase the amount of egg whites if you are a male. 6-7 egg whites and 1/2- 3/4 c. of oatmeal. Does not take long and is my favorite breakfast. I eat it every morning! No lie! LOL.
