I also have a bowflex and am using it along with dumbells and also a ball. Works great!

Body for Life Forum Message by JerryBraam.com (76 posts) at 09:43 PM: Re: Bowflex? any benefits?

You said "Any benefits"
I trained a thoracic surgeon that insisted I train him on his "Top of the Line" Bowflex with. He had decent results. But once I got him to purchase the BowFlex SelechTech dumbbells. His physical transformation was much more significant.

My opinion is if you want just any results... yes the "bow" is better than nothing. But a much better range of motion along with deeper and equal resistance creating firmer & rounder muscles can be createds with dumbbells and a swiss ball. But if you already have the bow machine of course, I would  use both for variety.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2376 posts) at 09:56 PM:
I use a bowflex and the selecttech dumbells. I could easily do everything I do with dumbells with the bowflex. It would depend on the model though - mine has the lat tower and squats etc built into it.

Thread: I gained 7 pounds in a month... (108 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1119 posts) at 09:40 AM: I gained 7 pounds in a month...
Yes, I took December off....off of eating right and working out and gained 7 pounds.  I am starting another challenge, actually started yesterday.  So I am going to hit it hard this time.

Casey and I watched Super size Me last night.  It's amazing that the guy can put on nearly 30 pounds in 29 days but take 6 months to lose it.  CRAZY!!!!

So anyway,  anyone wanting to take time off...be careful.

Lori

Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (83 posts) at 09:49 AM:
Hi Lori, I am in the same boat. Tried to do a 4 week mini challenge to get me through the holidays but I blew it big time. I gained 6!!! Day 1 is today for me and I also joined the missfit meltdown. I am hoping that at least 1/2 the weight it water retention but we'll see. Good luck on your challenge!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (56 posts) at 09:52 AM:
WB Lori... I skipped half of wk 8 and all of wk 9 partially due to the flu and the holidays happening so close to each other. However, I feel like crap and am excited to get back into the flow of things this week. I am no longer sick and the holidays are over, so I'm fired up about finishing this C1 on a very high note and start C2 rolling strong. By the way... I'm still impressed by your pictures and it surely won't take you long to get back in the swing of things. -Ed-

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1537 posts) at 10:29 AM:
I bet a lot of it's water retention Lori. As soon as you start eating right and drinking lots of water you'll notice a huge change the first week. Remember the first week?

blemt, No not at all....well I did two days of cardio. LOL Might as well say not at all. Oh well, it's starting good now. I'm going again today...drinking my water....eating right. Lori

Well I gained 14 in 3 weeks so there :P Blah! I meant to exercise the whole 3 weeks even though I wasn't planning on being strict with my nutrition during the holidays. That lasted about a week and then I got sick and just threw in the towel. And of course I ate everything in my path so 14 pounds later.... BLAH! Halleljuah for new beginnings. Ang

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1119 posts) at 02:02 PM:

Thread: Weight training. (102 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by missylab (10 posts) at 11:06 AM: Weight training.
I am very new to Body for Life. During the weight training segments, is it important to do exactley what the book says, or is it better to just start slow and build poundage and reps as you go? This weight training almost seems impossible. I don't want to loose it before I even start. Anyone else agree?

Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (480 posts) at 04:28 PM:
My experience with my own abilities and watching other beginners over the last year is to follow the book precisley starting on day 1. Try and hit your 10s or fail on the last 12 but just take baby steps, its OK to start off slow with lighter weight but do the reps the way they say in the book. Do it to a T- It may take a couple of workouts on each muscle group to get the hang of, just read the instructions very carefully and if you can get feedback from someone who knows the exercises that would be ideal. (just to make sure you are doing them properly)-otherwise take that book with you when you work out (thats what I did) follow instructions step by step. Bottom line: IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO DO EXACTLY WHAT THE BOOK SAYS. Just do it according to your own abilities- (practice with light weights and move yourself up gradually). Also it is always a good idea just to call teh 1800 number for important questions like this...I called them many times when I first started out. Oh and I almost forgot!! WELCOME TO OUR TRACKER FAMILY!! We are here to help, support and motivate!! Good Luck!! Linne

Body for Life Forum Message by missylab (10 posts) at 05:29 PM:
Thanks, I didn't do too well then today with the UBWO. :( I am pretty good at the cardio. I will just have to work harder on the weight portion.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (205 posts) at 05:47 PM:
Sounds like you started with weights that were too heavy and so couldn't go up or couldn't complete the required reps? If so, the best bet is to back them down until you get one small enough that you can start with that and go on up. It doesn't matter what the weight amount is, so long as you can push the first one up 12 times, the next one up for ten times, the next one for 8 times, and the next one for 6 times. Just experiment with the weights and make sure you write down what weights you start with and end with each day. Stay with the book.

Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (480 posts) at 07:24 PM:
Good advice michiganmike- remember too when youre first starting out the first 12 can be a nice light wieght just to warm up the muscles- you will find out how to reach the 10's soon enough...it will just take a couple of weeks for you to feel your way through it. Soon you will be pushing yourself without hurting yourself, you will be sore and when you see those muscles forming you will notice how much stronger you are becoming and it is very rewarding!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Spiritfan (12 posts) at 09:07 PM:
missylab- I know how you feel. On some of the exercises I start out with 1 pound or 3 pound dumbells an move up from there. You will soon see how quickly you can add weight. You can do it! Take your time and don't worry about the amount of weight you are lifting.

Thread: Spinning for HIIT? (93 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Charliegirl (6 posts) at 01:55 PM: Spinning for HIIT?
I love spinning..would this count as one of my HIIT's?

Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (480 posts) at 02:08 PM:
I think it would definitly count as HIIT! If you do it on a cardio day I think so- most spinning classes do intervals and they are also usally 45 - 1 hr too. Anyone else have a comment?? By the way - one of my goals is to start spinning once a week.

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (228 posts) at 02:12 PM:
45 minutes to an hr of HIIT may actually have a detrimental effect on your progress. after 20 - 30 minutes of it you will start "eating" away that hard earned muscle and that muscle will in the long run burn way more fat than cardio ever could. Spinning classes are great I would just wait til after your official challenge. just my input

Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (480 posts) at 04:12 PM:
Got this off the BFL web site: Body-for-LIFE Challenge Frequently Asked Questions Q: I like to get outdoors and exercise, so can I substitute walking, hiking or biking for my cardio? A: Yes! Walking and hiking can provide as intense a workout as you want. By maintaining good form and a brisk pace you can achieve the heart rate level (60 percent to 80 percent of maximum) that is ideal for fat burning. Increase your intensity with hills and walking and hiking become even more effective. If you want to shed fat, burn more calories, develop a strong heart and lungs, then bicycling is it. Biking also shapes and tones your legs better than any other form of cardio exercise. So get outside, enjoy the weather and burn fat! View more FAQs

Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (480 posts) at 04:21 PM:
This is actually a great topic- you could be right ocpanther65 even just one day a week could break down the muscles because according to BFL quick high intesity cardio is best. But I am going to call EAS tomorrow and see what they have to say about it. I did want to try spinning once a week, now Im not so sure. I would imagine though if you bumped up the protein and carb for the day it could work. But Ill call and post tomorrow!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Charliegirl (6 posts) at 05:12 PM:
Thanks Linne for calling! Let us know what you find out. I wouldnt probably only be doing it once a week (due to conflicts with my schedule) I look forward to hearing what they say!

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (205 posts) at 05:42 PM:
You know what! You can do spinning as HIIT for sure. The only "worry" is whether it might be too long and thus not be advisable due to potential muscle loss. Just do it for twenty to twenty five minutes instead of an hour and make it work for you! There's no sense in avoiding an activity you enjoy as long as a simple modification can make it acceptable.

Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (347 posts) at 05:51 PM:
I go to spin class I love it. I wonder what EAS will say about the workout?

Body for Life Forum Message by JerryBraam.com (76 posts) at 08:28 PM: Re: Spinning for HIIT?

It all depends what your goals are!
Research shows spinning usually creates an extreme catabolic environment. (Muscle loss)

Our buddy Ken Young (2004 Champ) enjoys marathons and long distance tour biking. To keep from losing muscle, he eats consumes very large quantities of calories. But not while doing his 1st BFL Challenge.
This can become way to complicated for newbies.

As Mike said...if you HAVE to spin...

"Just do it for twenty to twenty five minutes instead of an hour and make it work for you!"

Thread: Question about exercise routine after cancer? (42 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Calv (14 posts) at 04:26 PM: Question about exercise routine after cancer?
My girlfriend, aged 37 was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma last year, and has since undergone chemotherapy, and also radiotherapy to her chest and neck area. It appears that all the treatment has worked well for her so far, and she is gradually regaining her strength, however she is understandably still tired at times during the day. Now i am starting (again) an exercise and healthy eating programme, and my girlfriend would like to do something to increase her general fitness too. I can advise on exercise routine as i am qualified in this field, however i would like to hear from anyone here who has any advice on exercising after cancer treatment. Any tips, suggestions etc? I was thinking of starting with just a basic routine that she could do at home to start off with. A few strength exercises, combined with an awareness of healthier eating (my girlfriend could probably teach me a few things about that actually lol!), and work towards some form of cardio exercise if she can manage it. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks, Calv.

Body for Life Forum Message by kellythecoach (13 posts) at 05:52 PM:
Start off easy ( after the Dr says it is okay of course) Remember that she will get tired easy! I had both chemo and radiation for cervical cancer along with some surgeries. All good now but it did seem as though a little bit of a workout at first was alot! Slowly though I got back up to normal...I have to admit at first I overdid it and then it just took me longer to get back in the gym! Good luck!

Thread: Embarrased at the gym (120 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Charliegirl (6 posts) at 05:15 PM: Embarrased at the gym
I just started BFL (today actually!) and i did my UBWO. I really worked hard and my arm are achy right now. My only thing is, i get embarrased at the gym. It was completely packed today (obviously, resolutions!!) and i was in the weight room with ALL GUYS. Im sure when i get stronger and shape up i wont mind it, but im so self concious right now, i dont feel like im focusing so much on my work out, but how i look! Anyone have an advice?

Body for Life Forum Message by fromfat2firm (25 posts) at 05:27 PM:
I don't think you should feel embarassed at all. I go to the gym with mostly guys (all military mind you). My thought is if they are paying more attention to you than they are their own workout, then you are better than they are because you went there for an actual purpose. I say use an mp3 player or walkman and just focus on your own workout. Just zone everyone else out. You are there for YOU and you are doing the best you can. Honestly if they are looking at you.. it's probably cause they are checking you out!! Just keep at it. Good luck, Angel

Body for Life Forum Message by Charliegirl (6 posts) at 05:34 PM:
Haha, thanks for the boost. I honestly dont think they even care about me, its all just in my head! Its just so hard for me not to be self concious. I hope to get some good attention when im finished with this challange!!

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (205 posts) at 05:36 PM:
Maybe a couple of things. First of all, don't be embarrassed about being embarrassed! Yeah, I know, it makes no sense. But, what I really mean is that most people who are firstimers in the gym, including guys, are intimidated by the free weight area and the folks who are working out there. Most of them are at least harmless, though some of them look like they'd kill you if you ask them a question. You'll soon get used to working out around others and it will become second nature. Each gym has its own unspoken rules of etiquette, and the only thing that is universal is that it's always a good idea to ask someone in the area, before you take over some equipment,if anyone else is using it. Most guys actually are not at all upset about women in the free weight area and are happy to help if you need it. Some clubs have areas where there are fitness balls and dumbbells in a smaller area, and I see a lot of ladies going in there to do some of their dumbbell work and ab stuff. Another thing you can do, depending on your flexibility, is to find out a time when the gym isn't very busy and go at that time.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (476 posts) at 05:50 PM:
I totally know how you feel. My first complete Challenge, I was feeling fragile about the whole thing - like if anyone said the slightest comment about my eating or working out, I'd give up. So my gym then was SMALL, and I was often the only girl there. I tried to work out anonymously but it was hard - me, the owner, two trainers and their clients - oh brother! Anyway, I just stuck with it. I kept my journal with me (which they even craned their necks to see!) and simply focused on what I was supposed to be doing. I was the woman of mystery. Those 45 minutes were MINE and the only person in the gym that mattered then was ME.

So...after 8 weeks of consistent workouts (and eating clean), my transformation was pretty noticeable to everyone. The looks were more along the nature of, "Damn, girl!" One day the owner - a former Super Bowl champion - brought his wife over to me and said, "This is the one I've been telling you about. Her body has completely transformed." That felt pretty great!!

So here's what I'd do: keep focused, keep your mind in your muscles, listen to your own tunes, and hit your 10s. Are you going to look silly? Yep, especially when you're pushing yourself and scrunching your face to make those 10s! And in those early weeks, when you sense the guys are looking at you, just tell them - out loud or in your own mind - "Go ahead. Get a look at me now, because this body is changing fast!"

Same thing that Nicabod said (beauty AND smarts, what a lucky girl!) -- I am usually the only girl in the free weight area and was very intimidated at first. Flash is correct. Creatine post work out only. Creatine can feel like a cup of sand in your gut...eIt can be especially nausious for 'newbies' as Chuck said. My insider advice...try taking it with a cup of warm water. This helps disolve it better. Then less than 5 minutes later, follow it with a full glass of H20 to assist with the uptake and transport the product. I also suggest taking betagen every day for the most dramatic results. It will help with your quick burst HIIT cardio & recovery...

Hope that helps!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2376 posts) at 03:34 PM:
While in my personal opinion they are as gulty as hell, we cannot judge groups of people based on the actions of two. For one, it's only two people, not all professional fitness people are like this and kill people. On the same level, even though I am not a swinger, I can guarantee 99% of the people who are aren't into drugs and don't kill people. Not all people into recreational drugs kill people. If they did do it, sure their lifestyle may have had something to do with it - but the bottom line is - mental instability. There are other couples out there that swing and use recreational drugs, and they don't go around killing. These two must just have been screwy in the head. My two cents.

If you haven't already, think about registering to be an Organ, Tissue and Eye Donor.

GET THE FACTS ABOUT DONATION:

MYTH:  If someone is in an accident and the hospital knows they want to be a donor, the doctors won't try to save their life.

FACT:  Unlike what you see on fictional television shows, the medical team treating the patient is separate from the transplant team.  The transplant team is not notified until all lifesaving efforts have failed and death has been determined.

MYTH:  A donor's family has to pay additional expenses.

FACT:  There is no charge to the family for donation of tissue and organs.

MYTH:  Many people believe their religion does not approve of donation.

FACT:  Most major religions approve of donation and consider it a generous act that is the individual's choice.

DID YOU KNOW:

Everyone is a potential tissue and organ donor.  Donation depends on the medical condition at the time of death and test results.

You should share your decision with family members so they can know and respect your decision.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to 8 people.

One tissue donor can improve the quality of life of up to 75 people.

Close to 1 million tissue transplants are performed each year in the United States.

Thousands of patients are in need of tissue and organs to live healthier and longer lives.

Go to shareyourlife.org to find out how you can become a donor.  If you have any questions about donation, please feel free to PM me.

Thread: My Dream Girl - too funny (180 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2128 posts) at 02:31 PM: My Dream Girl - too funny
For those of you not familiar - I've had a picture on my fridge pasted to a calendar with Jan. 10th circled as my BFL start date last year. I've gazed at this woman lovingly, I've cursed her, people have come over and we've conversed about her, she's wrinkled with steam from the kitchen and I've even gotten so frustrated that with magic marker I wrote stupid ugly b**** where her head should be. She is headless it was just a picture I tore from a magazine representing perfection to me and if I could get half way there I'd be happy. Well today I finally found out who she is. She is none other than KELLY RYAN!!!!!! I just about flipped out!!!!!! Just because of the irony of it at this time and just because I've always said with a curl in my lip "well I've never been a Kelly Ryan fan; she's never provided any inspiration for me, not like Jenny Lyn or Mary Elizabeth Lado" I'm killing myself laughing - I SAY THE STOOOOOOOOPIDEST THINGS SOMETIMES. (I reposted her steam wrinkled picture again in todays blog entry). Really, I'm such a dweeb!!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (23 posts) at 12:35 PM: Chicken--buh.
I'm not a huge meat eater, and I get tired of chicken breasts after, oh, a day. Any other suggestions for getting enough protein? I don't really like fish, and my husband WON'T eat it. Shrimp is too expensive, and there's only so much cottage cheese and so many egg whites a girl can eat. I don't want to rely too much on protein shakes, but I will have some. Any suggestions on good protein sources? Or do I just need to--well, I was going to say choke down the chicken, but that's just gross.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (333 posts) at 12:45 PM:
Chickpeas (aka Garbanzo beans) are high in protein. Remember there are lots of beans that can be added to salads. We make a tuna and chickpea salad with lemon juice, salt, pepper and a bit of olive oil. Spruce it up with parsley or cilantro. How about ground turkey? We make burgers, meatloaf, tacos, spaghetti sauce. I just made a soup the other week by browning ground turkey breast with low-sodium taco seasoning then add tomato soup and simmered that a while. Sprinkled low fat cheddar cheese on top and you have a Tomato Taco Soup. It was good!

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (7 posts) at 02:23 PM:
The original Boca burgers are great- they are inexpensive, very easy to make (about 1 minute in the microwave), and high protein. DON'T try anything but Boca- all the imitations are horrible. And of the Boca, I think the all-american are the best. I like their breakfast sausage links too. Pour some ketchup on and they're great. Also, soy nuts are easy to pack and eat. They aren't too snacky (ie, they don't taste too great) but 1/4 cup packs like 15 grams protein, 3 or 4 grams fat, and a bunch of fiber. I don't eat anything but fish...there are lots of ways around the traditional meat-protein sources.

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (23 posts) at 02:33 PM:
I love the Boca sausages, but for some reason I can't find them anymore. I can find the burgers, but I'm stuck with the Morningstar Farms sausages which are WAY not as good. I do have the EFL cookbook, and I do like everything I've made in it so far.

Anyone? Should I take it as it just doesn't matter? Tom

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (191 posts) at 08:35 AM:
I think you should be fine, the 1 min is the minimum to allow your muscles to efficiently lift more weight. Your better off waiting more than 1 min then less.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1001 posts) at 08:47 AM:
It should be enough time. Thats how I would do it with my first workout partner... and even now. Unless your partner is chatty hehehe ;-)

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (374 posts) at 08:49 AM:
Yeah, I think it's OK. I thnk the point is to make sure its LONG ENOUGH for the muscles to rest. As long as they're rested it will be OK if it's a little longer than a minute.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (17 posts) at 09:02 AM:
Thanks everyone. I figured it would be ok, especially since there is a suggestion to HAVE a partner, but better safe than sorry. This is to important for me to mess around with and mess up! After seeing some of the transformations on this site, I figured you all would know :D Thanks again! Tom

thank you so much gang, I realize I can up it by 5 and hit my 10's If I up it by 10 I could never finish. I couldnt even make it to the last set of reps.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (17 posts) at 11:34 AM:
It's really a judgement call anyways. If it's just TO light, then you might want to try upping it by 10. If it's just a bit to light, then 5 should do the trick. Way I look at it, if the weight is going up, that's good. It's irrelevant how MUCH it's going up, just so long as it's headed in the right direction :D Tom

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (23 posts) at 12:18 PM:
It also depends on the amount of weight you're starting with--try looking at percent of weight. Like if you are lifting 50 pounds, then upping it 5 pounds would be a 10% increase, which is pretty good. My problem is that I'm often between amounts I can increase. At the gym we have 10, 12, 15, 20 lb. dumbbells, and on several exercises, 15 is too light and 20 is too heavy. There's no middle!

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (353 posts) at 12:27 PM:
For me in depends on the body part and also by what weights i have available. If one weight is a little too light but the next weight up is really too heavy, i'll really slow down the the time it takes to do each rep. That helps. And I'll also add a few reps at the heavier weight (before I try for the ten w/ the lower weight) just to get used to it. Then i'll slowly incorporate that weight into my training.

Thread: exercise intensity... help (78 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by wannabeahottie (5 posts) at 10:44 AM: exercise intensity... help
hi everyone, i am starting my first challenge thursday. i wonder if everyone really follows the varied peaking intensities described in the bfl book, or can u wing it and still get the results u want? (if i take my dog for an hour walk, is that ok for my cardio day, or do i need to do something more intense?) thx for all the help, this is a great support system... enjoy 2006 everyone... j

Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (443 posts) at 10:53 AM:
intensity is the key here...taking your dog for a walk is awesome! However, it needs to be IN ADDITION to your high intensity cardios 3 times a week. The same is also true to lifting. Hitting those peaks is insurance for progress! Good luck!!

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (191 posts) at 11:08 AM:
I second that :)

Body for Life Forum Message by kana (386 posts) at 11:09 AM:
I agree with Can'tStopMe- you need the high intensity. The dog walk is awesome, but you need the interval training. You could try mixing running in with the walk. Dede

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (374 posts) at 11:25 AM:
I agree with everyone.... adding extra exercise is fine and probably helpful but you gotta get the heart rate up here for 20 minutes 3x a week!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (17 posts) at 11:32 AM:
Just my thoughts here, but while taking your dog for a walk is better than nothing, it's not going to kick your body's fat burning mechanism into high gear without the intensity. The BFL cardio program is designed to do just that. Like others have said, taking the dog for a walk is great, just do it in addition to your scheduled HIIT cardio ;) Tom

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (7 posts) at 11:44 AM:
What I do is do my HIIT cardio; then at the end of my HIIT I take my dogs for a 10 minute walk as a cool down. Then everybody's happy! walking the kids is a great way to wind down and cool off.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (205 posts) at 12:19 PM:
Actually, wannabe, it all depends on how you do the dog walk!!! I "walk" my brittany spaniel, Milly the wonder dog, and it counts as HIIT cardio! Why? Because we start out at a 7.5 mph pace. Then we walk a bit at a nearby park, and then take off again, at an 8 mph pace for two more blocks. And on and on it goes. Even with a cool-down segment at the end, we end up doing 2.5 miles in 25 minutes or less. The only bad thing about doing a "walk" like that is that it's backward from the conventional HIIT cardio, since the poor old dog gets tired after about a mile and a half. She drags me the first mile, and I drag her the last!

Oh, and one more question! Did they tweak anything (supplements, diet, exercise) along the 12 weeks that resulted in a huge change in their body or mind? Like during week 6, did they add flax oil and all of a sudden the body fat just dropped?

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (353 posts) at 02:51 PM:
Cardio - what levels of ten, what equipment used, did they do extra cardio, how long was each HIIT session, what does their cardio routine look like now, is it still BFL, etc.

I woudl ask...did it really all "click" and "happen" in 12 weeks just like that, or did they have some fits and starts? I ask because, in reading the stories on the site, it appears that somehow things just clicked and they "crossed the abyss" never to look back, and in 12 weeks, turned an amazing corner. I get frustrated because I falter, or start and quit challenges, fail, start again, etc.

To me it looks like there is some confusion as to who the parent is here. This is going to sound really harsh and mean but I don't intend for it to be hurtful. Why WOULD she change at this point? You keep giving her money no matter how far she pushes you, you care for her no matter what, you always bail her out - really, why would she change???? Udenia, I honestly mean that in the nices way. Tracey

Keep up the communication with her. It seems that after her "blow up" she was still willing to talk to you even if it wasn't the most pleasant conversation for her or you. Find out how her day with the bus pass, make her accountable for it. Bring it down to "tracker" talk: ecourage and push!! Good Luck and God Bless!!!

But at the end of the day .. you have to listen to your own heart .. YOu know what you have to do even if it is hard ! Stay strong ...we're here for ya! Hugs Lala*

I feel since she was living with me, that I should help her get started up there,, however, she is NOT coming back here. I am praying to God that she finds a decent job, she use to do at home care for elderly,,, so she has applied for some of those jobs. I made an arrangement with her, the $$ that I was sending to her now, was the medical insurance that I had for "her" and she doesn't use, EVER... We were suppose to cancel that policy in FEB anyway, so I am going to give that to her each month, that will pay $100 rent and $65 for bus pass, but I will only do that thru March,,and she knows that. I "pray to God" that she will have a permanent job by then and can start making friends, have things to do and just get out,,, while making her own way. Tracey, no worries, I feel the same way sometimes and have spoken to her about it. Seems when you don't have to worry where the $$ comes from, and you always have a roof, home and food, then you get use to it.. I would rather give her some $$ and hopefully she can get it going up there, than her coming back here, just making the situation worse... The people she is staying with are going thru bankruptcy and we didn't know that when she went up there? They didn't tell us, so we didn't know. She has a CD that she can cash in at the end of Mar/Apr and she is going to try and get a car with that. Thank-you to my Tracker Buddies, you have came thru again for me, it is good for the soul to be able to talk thru things,,, take care!

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (353 posts) at 12:29 AM:
Here's what I do to keep myself on track - set weekly goals. You need Long term and Short term goals, I feel, to really help push yourself. 12 weeks sometimes feel a long ways off (especially at the begining.) But setting a goal to: (for example) "1. Not miss a workout this week, or 2. To not eat after 10pm " can keep you focused on the week ahead. It totally helps me...

The body for LIFE challenge is a path of heros, it is definately a challenge. I am starting week 6 and i fire up my motivation by reading the champions blogs, listening to the audio book of body for LIFE to and from work, looking at the success stories on dvd but most importantly my motivation gets its boost when i read my reasons for wanting to make a change. God Bless from Cyprus Pan

I got sidetracked on my first challenge by a personal trainer at a local gym who insisted I needed to do their approach. It's still my fault, since I listened. This time, there is no one who will sidetrack me! If, after week 12, I'm still not making improvements, then MAYBE I'll listen. But until then, they don't even need to bother talking to me about it! I am splitting my 12 week challenge (long term goal) into 3 mini challenges (short and mid term goals) Maybe this will help you. YOU CAN DO IT

Body for Life Forum Message by missylab (10 posts) at 11:01 AM:
I like the 3 mini challenges idea, because everytime I think of twelve weeks it seems impossible. At least you can reach a goal a lot faster and them really feel good about it and be motivated to the next mini challenge. I never realized how hard this is going to be. The cardio is a breeze. Weight training is going to have to start small and then gain.

Nine months from now, my goal is to be contest ready for the Northern Michigan Natural Bodybuilding Figure and Fitness Championships in Saginaw, MI. My trainer thinks I need a year to prep, I want to prove him wrong.

At any rate, this isnt going to be easy (but as you know..anything worthwhile isnt easy)..you think the BFL meal plans are strict? The meal plan I have now is one page long..not 200 plus like the EFL book! LOL One page!!! The most exciting thing on the sheet is sweet potatoes! Oh yeah I forgot, oatmeal! Other than those two things, my carbs come from leafy veggies and broccoli!

The good thing is I can go on autopilot..I told him I dont want to think about things and the way things are laid out..I dont have to put much thought into it..just do it and see the results.

This is the time of year where EVERYONE wants to loose weight. They join a gym, get all the gagets, and go out with a full head of steam...usually new year resolutioners peeter out in three weeks. Don't let yourself become a statistic.

There's something special in the air..can you feel it? Its a new year...how about you make this the LAST TIME you make a resolution to lose weight? Think about it, at this time next year you won't have to because you will have transformed yourself into something you couldnt recongize a year before.

Be better than your best this year, look better than your best, feel better than your best!

GOOOO TIGERS!!

Thread: Well worth the read.... (125 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Go4steffie (785 posts) at 06:26 AM: Well worth the read....
I have posted this before, but with the New Year and everyone doing new challenges, I thought it was worth revisiting. I love to read the things on skwigg.com and this is a great one! It is long, but worth it!!!! Stef :-) That last 10 pounds or last 5% that just really doesn't seem to want to leave... This topic is all about that last challenge to get to YOUR ultimate body. How do you make sure that it does it? Read on!!! Reminders: - The closer you are to your "optimum" weight / body fat, the harder it will be to get down to that point. :-) Don't let your brain tell you that you are a failure - if it seems hard, it's because it IS! - "In order to loose weight, it's a simple calculation. You must burn more calories than you intake." HOWEVER - this can be misleading. Not all calories are created equal. - We all already know that the "secret" to weight loss is cardio + weight training + nutrition. Most of us think we have a pretty good handle on it, but the more I grip it, the more I learn. - Static is bad. This is true for nutrition, cardio type and weight lifting. In every sense of the term, static really is bad. I'll quote the truism and explore it in each of the sections below - the only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. :-) - Nature knows more about what we should be eating than man or scientist. :-) Tips / Tricks / Things: This is my list of things I did in C3 that made for an ~ 8% body fat loss… and I -KNOW- I could have done better if I'd been more focused. :-) Nutrition: - No bars or RTDs unless you have NO OTHER choice. Whole foods are best for you, because they require more work from your body - got to love the thermogenic effect. - Refeeding - If your target food zone is ~1400-1600 calories a day, go up to 2200 for one day and down to 1200 the next. I find I eat more on HIIT days, so those are the days I cycle to the higher calories. Make sure you do this within reason. In my example, we want the average to be that 1500 calorie mark. - Find new foods - make sure you aren't in a rut with your food - one of the benefits of the refeeding thing where you are cycling your calories is that some things that aren't in your food range if you're on 1500 calories ARE in it on the higher days. Take advantage of that. It makes it easier to stick with eating clean and you get a variety of tastes, nutrients and vitamins / minerals. - No - and I do mean NO - alcohol for the duration of the challenge. It can screw you up to badly. If you REALLY have to have it for some reason, it's ok; but it will hork your calories for that week and potentially set you back more than it's worth. This is NOT forever. Once you get to the place you want to sustain, you'll be able to add that back in, but while you need a caloric defecit this is an easy and logical place to cut. - Nix or severely restrict free days. I stopped having much of a free day. I have two free meals. Usually within the same 24 hour period. I found that it really cut down on cravings AND means that you don't have to work as hard to make sure you've got the caloric defecit over the course of the week. This is NOT forever. Once you get to the place you want to sustain, you'll be able to add that back in, but while you need a caloric defecit this is an easy and logical place to cut. - Vegetables and Fruit are your friends. Make sure that most of your carbohydrates come from fruit and veg - preferably things like berries, peaches and apples. Try to limit crackers and bread type products in your meals - they sneak sodium in there that you probably don't need. - Fiber, fiber, fiber. And GOOD oils. Make sure you are getting loads of fiber (if you're eating loads of vegetables, you've prolly got this covered.) Flax seed oil is your friend. It's a good oil that helps cut down on cravings and makes sure you've got what you need to break down all that happy healthy food. - Biggest meals first. The later in the day you are (as in closer to bed time, whenever that is for you) the lighter your meals should be. Try for low GI foods like cottage cheese right before bed. It's enough to keep you full; but not enough to weigh you down. HIIT: - Rock the body - and rock it HARD! If you think you could keep going - even for 30 more seconds - when you are at the end of the last minute of your cardio, you didn't push it hard enough. There's all kinds of scientific proof that that minute of super intensity is what REALLY ratchets up your metabolism. - Cross-train!!! If running/cycling/biking is killing you, DON'T DO THAT! Get on a treadmill, bike or an elliptical and kick some booty some new way!!!! Make sure that you don't court injury - switch things up, and LISTEN to your body. - Some days, break the habit! One of my habits was that my 10 on the treadmill was a slightly higher incline from the rest of my workout, at 8.5 MPH. Last Sunday I DOUBLED my incline and still went 8.5 MPH. I never thought I could have done it, but I did, and I felt FABULOUS once I cooled down (not to mention super proud of myself for even attempting, let alone completing it) - Find something you can do with a group - it will make you push yourself WAY harder than you can alone. Maybe that's a trainer, or a spinning class, or just a group of friends to go out with. Even if it's only one day a week that you do this, you'll find that it can be extra motivation to dig that little bit harder into your reserves during other training. Weight Training: - Slow and steady AND fast and furious. :-) This is another area that switching it up REALLY pays off. Not just switching up your fitness routine every 4 - 6 weeks, but little meso cycles INSIDE your 4- 6 week routine. Maybe use slow for intensity one week (just because you're sick of the routine). Maybe do one day of totally "random" (but pre-planned) routine that isn't what you'll do the rest of the 4-6 week interval - I like to test run the next routine I have planned, so I know if it needs work; AND I get the benefit of changing things up. - Form IS function. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate. Make sure you can SEE that muscle getting worked, and you KNOW your form is perfect. The better your form, the more concentrated the exercise is on that muscle. That's a GOOD thing for muscle gain. :-) - Long term weight lifting goals - for instance, I want to do an unassisted pull up. That means I have certain muscles I KNOW need to get stronger to accomplish that goal. I can (and do) design my work outs around those muscles and the types of things that make my goal more possible. (For this challenge I was push up girl. I found something like 15 different ways to do push ups. *g*) - Another place the buddy system is your friend. Same as in HIIT - it will make you push yourself WAY harder than you can alone. Maybe that's a trainer, or a spinning class, or just a group of friends to go out with. Even if it's only one day a week that you do this, you'll find that it can be extra motivation to dig that little bit harder into your reserves during other training. - Don't cheat yourself. If you feel like butt and don't want to go, make sure you know why, and how you'll make that time up, but then LET IT GO! If you HATE the idea of going that day, even as you stand in the gym door, or do your first rep, chances are you need to back it off and either do about 50% that day, or don't do it at all, and use that as a free exercise day. Overtraining will make you WAY more likely to LEAP off the wagon for both exercise and food.

Woo hoo, Tracker buds!! We're ROCKIN!! This morning, I slipped on my hot new red bikini and admired my super-toned bod in the mirror. Then, I stepped out onto the Ledo deck of the cruise ship into the warm sun and felt so alive!! (Although if you were watching me this morning, what really happened included tugging on tighter-than-normal workout pants, zipping up my full-length down coat, stepping out into the cold and rain, and sloshing my way to the gym feeling a tad groggy.) VISUALIZATION, BABY!!!

Joanna, Something went wrong. They should show up in your profile right away.

Body for Life Forum Message by Pan (34 posts) at 09:05 AM:
If they are of a large size and you have dial up it may take upto 5-10 mins for a 2mb picture to upload. When its done it should take you to a page where it gives you 2 options, i think to return to profile or return to uploading pictures. Give it another try God Bless Pan

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1001 posts) at 12:20 PM: Tracker Voting
I was trying to get Julie into our monthly top 20, but tracker says I already voted for her, which I did many moons ago. I thought 5 votes per month ( knowing you can vote twice for any single member ) but I thought the slate was wiped clean each month. Any thoughts or input? Yours in Health, Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (476 posts) at 12:28 PM:
I tried to vote for someone last night, and the same thing happened with me. Maybe this is a feature our webmaster has control over and hasn't yet fixed it.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (333 posts) at 12:38 PM: Re: Tracker Voting

I just came across this in the FAQ's

Q: Why am I limited to 5 votes for the top profiles and why can I not for the same person more than once?

A: Voting is limited to 5 votes per month and never for the same person twice to force you to vote for new people rather than using your limited votes on the same ones repeatedly. If profiles deserve votes, they will get it from new members and those who haven't voted yet. Votes need to be a valuable thing, not something you can give to as many people over and over as you want. If you want someone else to get more votes because they've been doing well, you should do something like post a message saying what great results someone has got and that people should vote for them.

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1119 posts) at 12:46 PM:
I have ran across the same thing. It is good to see new faces/bodies in there though. Plus alot of people don't evne know about the voting OR the Karma which I use both of them. Lori

I use an image editing program such as Microsoft Image Composer, Photoeditor etc. Then basically you just put them side by side and save them that way :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (476 posts) at 12:41 PM:
Is that software you have to buy, or is it something you can download for free?

Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (480 posts) at 01:03 PM:
You probably need to buy some photo editing software. I use photshop but that is a more professional program-their are more economical ways to go, I recommend going to your local software retailer and find a basic photo editing program. If you need more help PM me and Ill be happy to help you!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2376 posts) at 01:04 PM:
I'm sure you could find something for free or even a trial. Try a site like http://www.download.com or www.tucows.com and look for a free image editor. There's always options available :D

Thread: The good, the bad and the oh-so-ugly.... (91 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by AngRoCamp (139 posts) at 01:00 PM: The good, the bad and the oh-so-ugly....
First the good: I started Challenge #2 today. And it felt sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good! Had an awesome UBWO this morning and really pushed myself well. I had to chuckle a little at the sheer number of people at the gym today. Holy New Year's Resolutions Batman!!! I sincerely wish them all the best. I'm sad thinking about the fact that a mere percentage will keep it up long-term. I however am in it for the long haul. I've done this once. I can definintely do it again! And I'm so pumped for this challenge! The bad: Three weeks *REALLY* off program did some major damage. I know scale weight isn't a very good guage of where you stand, but it's a measurement I have to use and the scale was NOT nice to me today. I weighed in at 267. That's FOURTEEN pounds higher than my C1 ending weight 3 weeks ago. That's freaking scary, not just bad. I was flat-on-my-back sick for a week and a half and not able to workout. I wish that was my only excuse. I also ate like a complete pig for
