For those thinking that SLENDA monderation is ok... THINK AGAIN!! I was using just 1 little packet of splenda in my tea in the morning 1 packet!! I couldn't figure out why my face was burning up, literally looked like I had a chemical peel. I thought I was having hot flashes or something at 34. Also, was having terrible stomach pain and constipation. My mom sent me to Dr. Mercola's site that talked about the dangers of Splenda. Since then I have stopped the Splenda and turned to Stevia... what a difference. Buyers beware though, Splenda is in everything these days and you can have all types of allergic reactions too it. Read the labels and listen to your body. All the best! S

Thread: Injury? - Any Help? (43 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2274 posts) at 12:29 PM: Injury? - Any Help?
I've got a problem with my knee. I'm desparate because I never get injuries so don't know what to do. I can barely bend it. I did cardio today on the stairmaster today & yesterday but haven't lifted since Thursday; I don't believe I've pulled a muscle. You know when you bend right down at the knees at you'll hear them crack? Well its like it got to that point but never "cracked" - make sense? Since then its like seized up, very very stiff and its all located directly over the knee cap. As the day goes on I can feel it shooting upwards in my thigh. It feels like if it had a good "CRACK" it would relieve what I'm talking about but be very painful; you know when you just know that it will? Anyway, I'm in a panic because tomorrow is quad WO and I really want to do it. It doesn't appear swollen; apply heat? Stretch til I rip the shit out of whatever is going on or just rest on it and hope it disappears when I sleep?

Body for Life Forum Message by Calv (22 posts) at 12:46 PM:
Hi Flower, Ice it, when you injure yourself, ice it for the first 24-48 hrs, this stops the swelling, reduces the bloodflow, minimises damage, reduces pain and a whole load of other things. Just 15 minutes or so with an ice pack or frozen peas every couple of hours if possible. Rest it as much as poss too, leg up so you can't put weight on it. I'd recommend you see a doc asap. There are loads of things that can go wrong with the knee, if you had done any major damage you'd usualy have swelling, but thats not to say you have'nt damaged it. It could be the meniscus, this is a common injury with deep knee bends and if a piece of meniscus tissue has come away it can cause "locking" or stiffening of the knee. It could be the posterior or anterior cruciate ligaments, could be the cartalidge lining the underneath of the knee cap, could be a multitude of things really. If you can put weight on it, you won't have severely damaged a muscle, thats not to say you have'nt strained one though. Either one of them would not benefit from a lower body workout at all Flower, get it checked by a doc or sports therapist/physio before you carry on. Whilst you can get good advice from the forum, nothing compares to a hands on assessment from a professional. Hope it sorts itself soon. Calv.

Has anyone ever tried this one?

I had some today Electric Lime Flavor...and it was quite the experience.

I'm sad to say that it wasn't what I thought it would be like. I don't drink coffee at all, take no medications or anything so this one really affected my body in a bad way.  I thought this one would be perfect for me and I was wrong.  It contains 119 g of caffiene and I don't know what the deal was but at first I had tons of energy, it is suppose to kick in 10 mins after you take it, it seemed to be working awesome cause I think I hit about a 9-10 on my cardio, felt a rush, then about 20 mins after, it all of a sudden it hit me hard and I started getting blured vision, my left hand went numb, and I had to go home, cause I almost fainted.  I couldn't think properly, or even read or say anything, it was the weirdest thing EVER!  Maybe my body was just reacting to the large dose of caffiene? or something else in it? no clue...anyone else experience anything like this ever? What the heck happened to me? It scared the crap out of me...I have a clean bill of health from my doc, nothing wrong with me except I need to lose a bit of weight.....I'm just gonna stick to my BFL shakes. :(

Any ideas?

The same thing happened to me when I tried fatburners in the past, dizziness, palpitations, nausea, etc. Never again! Of course it curbed my appetite because I didn't want to eat when I felt like throwing up. lol In my opinion, don't waste your money. You don't want to end up in the ER or at the cardiologist's office.

I been saying the same thing, It's the end of the world very soon, It's going crazy the whole world is going nuts, Hurricane on top of hurricanes, earthquakes, wild fires, Wars, crime in the streets in cities we once called safe to walk at night. Things are getting out of hand, kids today, they are not like when I grew up, respect the parents or people older then you, now they talk back and augue and even curse you out, schools, things are just bad But you know what, I was talking to Hubby and he said something that struck home. he said our parents didn't like our music, back in the 50's nice girls still got PG and the boy next door was either Richie or the Fonz, but no one rolled out the red carpet for the Fonz like they do on TV, TV like was not as we know it but still called risk kay and I wasn't allowed to watch it. So I guess what I am saying is every generation has it's times afterall I did think Hippies were GROOVY! haha!! and the hurricane's we forgot about distroyed the same cities that have been rebuilt to get distroyed again, History repeats it's self!!! Oh my gosh, I never thought I would be asking this! I usually run (OK, walked briskly) away from anything techi-like. BUT, I want to do more with my blog. It's boring and that just canNOT happen! So, I mainly want to know how to put pics in the text. I want to be able to put links in the paragraphs, but not have a www.blahblahblah.com link, something clickable that I can name myself. I would also like to create other pages within my blog and link to them, and list other webpages I want to link to. See? Simple...lol. Well, at least I am hoping it is! Can anyone help me out?

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (250 posts) at 03:26 PM:
Posting pictures here (and smilies, too) is easy as long as you have them stored online somewhere. It's not like blogger where you can upload them from your computer and put them right into your post. But if you have a photo on blogger you'd like to share here, just go to your blog, right-click the photo, and click "properties". There is a URL (starts with http://) to the photo there. Highlight that and copy it. Then, come here and put it in this format (without the spaces immediately inside the brackets): < img src="http://yourblog.blogspot.com/myphoto.jpg" > Replace the address in that link with the one you got from your blog photo, and voila! Clear as mud, right?

Body for Life Forum Message by Daaang Girl (75 posts) at 12:45 PM: fitness model page
I know there was a page I went to a while ago that had pictures of different fitness models. It looked like a page where people could put their info (resume, etc) and web page, as well as contact info for hiring. I was trying to find that page on my own and google pulled up some pages I have never seen and never want to see again in my LIFE! I'm scared to look any further on my own, so I am asking if anyone here knows what the heck I am talking about and can help me out, I would appreciate it :)

Okay, not that anyone is going to want to see my side or back picture (icky!)...I have to post them anyways. So, I posted the front one with no problems. When I did the side and back picture the same way it said they were uploaded successfully, however they still don't show up in my profile. Any ideas?? Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by Suz2lose (43 posts) at 06:32 PM:
I had the same trouble when I started uploading my photos. Here is what I found worked for me: 1) delete all photos to include profile photo (if adding one) 2) save all pictures to my desktop so as to easily find 3) up load them in order a)profile b)front c) side & d) back...in order. I had to do them each immediately following by choosing "Continue to upload pictures" NOTE: When you go to add the side and back - make sure that the tab that shows week and photo (profile, front, side, back) are properly marked. I found that when I went to upload my side, it would keep defaulting to profile. "I don't want my before side photo as my profile!!!" Trial and error got me there. Like I said, I tried to save front and go browse around and then come back 4 or 5 minutes later to upload another pic and it wouldn't let me. I like it that you can upload pictures, I just wished it was more user friendly! Best of luck. If you continue having trouble, send me your pictures and I will add them to your profile. Suz Happy photo pasting!

Blech!

I think the important thing is not so much the fat, carb, or calorie content, but what you're putting into your body. The idea is to eat clean and unprocessed foods.

Here's the list of what's in Coffeemate's Fat Free Non Dairy Creamer - which is a bunch of stuff I try to avoid during a Challenge!

INGREDIENTS: WATER, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN AND/OR COTTONSEED OIL**, SUGAR, MODIFIED CORNSTARCH, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM CASEINATE (A MILK DERIVATIVE)***, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, POLYSORBATE 60, SODIUM STEAROYL LACTYLATE, CARRAGEENAN, SALT, BETA-CAROTENE COLOR.

I'm with the others that if you must have coffee and have cream in your coffee, go with skim milk.

Or even better -- drink Cappucino-flavored Myoplex Lite!  125 mg of caffeine.

Thats a great idea. I think instead of kranking up my speed I'll increase the incline. I'm sure this will make me work harder. Melissa

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (17 posts) at 09:33 AM:
Mel, you are on the right track. I typically warm up at 4.5 then go 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5 and 7.5 for high point. Just depending how I'm doing breathing wise (I have exercise induced asthma) sometimes I'll bump each 'set' up by 0.2mph. So my second set will be 5.2,5.7,6.2,6.7 then 5.4,5.9,6.4,6.9 until I get my high point to 8 or 8.5. Talk about a sweat. I also will just increase the incline if I'm not in the best breathing shape for that day. Like Ryan said, everyone's "10" is their own and sometimes your "10" can be more or less than the time before. S.

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (110 posts) at 03:27 PM:
Good point bubblz7. Sometimes my 10 is not as fast as the time before. We fluctuate depending on so many factors (sleep, muscle soreness, mood, weather, hormones). I try to keep increasing the speed or the incline so I am always fighting to get to that 10. But some days it doesn't take nearly as much as I'd like for it to be a 10. I think it is also a mental game. Sometimes I don't feel like I can do my HIIT. I tell myself I have to TRY...if I can't go beyond 5 minutes I can quit. Well, then at 5 minutes I realize I'm still alive and breathing and talk myself into finishing another 5 minutes so I can say I did 1/2 a workout. Then once I've completed 10 minutes I'm half way there so I just keep going. I don't have to play this game each time. But on those days that I'm convinced that I CAN'T do it for any number of reasons, I prove myself wrong. And I always feel better after the workout.

Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (49 posts) at 04:27 PM:
Hi Melissa! You're definitely on the right track. When I incorporated the treadmill for my HIIT, my speed was almost identical to yours. Pretty soon you're going to be flying on that treadmill! Right now, my treadmill HIIT speeds are 5.0, 5.3, 5.5, 5.8, 6.0, and 6.5 mph for my 10. Depending on how I feel, I sometimes bump the speed up by 0.1-0.2 mph. And I keep my incline at 0.5, and sometimes 1.0. I'm still trying to achieve 2 miles in 20 minutes before I bump up the incline even more. I wish I could go faster, but my short legs are my downfall. I'm trying though. Good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by melissab (349 posts) at 05:13 PM:
I agree with the posts above- your 100% will be different from another's. My speeds are higher now than when I started. You will gradually get faster and your endurance will improve. My current speeds are 6.0 for 2min warmup, then 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, & 9.0 for my 10. I always increase by a minimum of .5- You can do more than you think, push yourself and you'll feel amazing when it's over.

Body for Life Forum Message by sixpack (22 posts) at 05:43 PM:
Well I was wondering what people like Cheryl do when they can run 3 miles in the 20 min Hiit. I am doing the 3,4,5,6,7,8,6,7,8,9,6,7,8,9,6,7,8,9,10 and then 5,4,3 for a cool down and that is only about 2.4 miles. How much faster do you have to go to get 3 miles.

But, clearly the numbers don't lie, and the bodies show the effect of too much food little by little over a long time." Follow this link to "It's the New Walking." http://tinyurl.com/cgsl6

This is a totally funny thread! And yes, now I have that damn song in my head too, thank you very much. One thing that I always find interesting when a particular food comes up in question that isn't a no-brainer like candy and donuts is that nobody considers that food is also a source of vitamins and minerals, not just calories. Over the years people have learned a lot of things the hard way. For example, sailors who got Scurvy from too long without vitamin C. I for one am not willing to give up my fruit because it's got too much sugar. Life is a balance and if for me it's losing my teeth because of Scurvy or eating a banana which is a 140 calories, has 2 grams of protien, 4 grams of fiber 602 mg of potasium and 13.8 mg of Vitamin C. I'll take the banana thank you. By the way, all that said - I don't really like the way bananas taste and rarely eat them. Laurie

Aren't we going to eat those calories anyway? I know I am. I started adding in bananas because I needed to up my calories and that was a good way to do it. And yeah, like Laurie said, there's good stuff in 'em too. I ain't no holla back girl.

Flower, anytime I am in the mood to giggle, I look for your name. I am always interested in your opinions and stuff like this last post just makes me laugh! Bananas...ok, I guess to summarize what we should have all learned from this thread is that bananas are a hi-glycemic fruit. If you need extra carbs in a meal, they can be a good source - just watch the portion. It might be a good idea to have some variety in your diet of carbs and bananas can certainly fit into that array of choices. Bananas are always a better choice than snickers and half a banana can make a whey or plant protein shake creamier and tastier and fulfill your carb ratio. The big banana controversy is over, right?

Well... I tried on some size 16 jeans I had in my closet and they don't fit yet. I can get one pair on and zipped up, but can't move or breathe in them, lol. Another pair I can't get over my hips. I am thinking that, although they don't say so, the new pants must be a 16W. Which I am still thrilled with, it's still smaller than my 18s, but it just means I have a bit more work to do before I am really a 16. :)

NO! Don't do that to yourself!! Talking yourself out of what is REAL is just not good for the soul, chica. Every piece of clothing is made differently. Every woman knows this, yourself included. What you wore last night is a 16, dammit.

Dave not only paid the $7500.00 to Make-a-Wish he also gave $7500.00 to Juli Whitt Foundation!!!! Then EAS MATCHED $15,000.00 to Julie Whitt fund! Is this amazing ot what?!?!?!?!?!

There is a handful of us here heading up to the EAS after Party! Porter & Abb are about to leave with out me.....Until tomorrow...Ciao

Source: BFL Guestbook by Chris Carey EXPO FINALS: I have never been so choked up for such a long period of time in my entire life. When they played the Julie Whitt Tribute video on the 2 giant big screens, there was NOT a dry eye in the entire room. To see Julie and hear her voice saying, "Do it, just do it," was emotionally overwhelming. So let’s get off our butts and “do it” for her, huh??? The next segment, honoring each of the 15 finalists was incredibly moving and you could feel the intense power of BFL in the air. The ones that were present were called to the stage and received their EAS jackets and standing ovations, big-time! THEN, they had a video segment for each of the 6 top finalists, showing the surprise visits and more. After each video, the finalist was called to the stage, got their jacket, and made a speech. The words that came from these people hit you so hard, it was like Godzilla smashing a 4x4 across your chest. As Brian, Michael, Nicole, Russ, Cheryl and Aaron each made their speech, they were choking back the tears, some of them just let it flow, their voices were cracking and the emotion was just too much to handle. All six speeches pulled tears from my eyes, especially Nicole’s. After all that, it was time. They opened the envelope and called Aaron Ferguson as the One Million Dollar Winner! The place went nuts! Aaron got back up on stage and could hardly talk because he was so choked up. He vowed to proudly represent all of us as the new BFL Champion and said he will relocate from Australia to the United States. The place cheered with acceptance! But, my friends, there was also much pain in the room tonight. It was a hard blow to the five who didn’t win. My heart goes out to each of them, especially after getting to know them over the course of the weekend. To converse with their families and get a feel for who they really are as well as understand the pressure, tension and stress they have gone through in anticipation of the big moment made it all so real. Of course they are all winners. But 15 people came extremely close to a very high purse. Five of them could almost taste it. I felt the pain of the ones not selected. They held their composure but they couldn’t hide their hurt. This was an "all or nothing" contest but only in the monetary sense. They all gained more than money could ever buy. Mike: I gave Tracy Jeffries a big hug from you! Pan: Russ read your email on my PDA phone and I got it on video for you! Bill Phillips was present. However, not in the flesh. But you could feel him in the room because after all, he started this whole thing. It is his baby and always will be. Someone else is just taking care of things. All in all, the Expo was the most emotionally moving event I have ever experienced, combined with intense knowledge and inspiration beyond compare. EAS filmed the entire event and it will be available on DVD from EAS sometime soon. I can’t wait to get my copy. Steve: The EAS/BFL jackets are a coveted trophy that carry extreme honor. Porter’s jacket went for $7,500.00 tonight. The jackets are exclusively reserved for Champions, it’s the "tradition" and that will never change. It would totally negate the validity of those former Champions to sell the jackets to the public. Be it EAS or BFL jackets because they are a symbol of accomplishment. The only way you or I or anyone else are going to get one is by hard work. Time to hit them tens!!! Source: BFL Guestbook by Chris Carey

fitness gal you must be delerious or just unrealistic. I can definitely see a difference in you pics, and I agree that you were in good shape to start with. However,i did finish one bfl about three years ago and also was dissappointed.i only lost 12 lbs. and the changes werent as dramatic.Honestly the problem was the eating.I worked out really hard, followed the training program, but lost it on my free days and sometimes in between.I'm just starting another attempt at it. I'm in week one and my muscles are aching, especially legs.I just had my egg white, spinach, and feta omlette with an apple.I know, feta isnt on the menu but I only had a small piece, right?

Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (613 posts) at 08:20 AM:
The portion of the challenge that you find yourself in is quite normal. For some reason during each challenge, the scales and the measurements seem to take a week or so off. Even if you are maintaining 100% with the program, your body calls a time-out. We all understand that it is frustrating and can test one’s convictions and commitments. It gets hard! But if it were not hard it would not be much of a challenge now, would it? Give yourself a break (mentally). Stay off the scales for a week. If you really want to bust the plateau, be 100% strict and add a little extra cardio to your workout. Watch your sodium intake, too. Drink more water (stay near a bathroom!). But please, don’t give up! You’re half way to completing your transformation! Don’t cheat yourself out of the joy and pride you WILL experience at the end of 12 weeks! Knuckle down and stay focused. This stagnation is temporary! TJ

Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (148 posts) at 07:00 AM: This can't be right.
I took my measurements today to show any progress on week one. I wasn't really expecting any, but it would be fun to see. Besides, I had to tighten my belt up a notch so I knew there was SOME change. Well, comparing the numbers from week 0 to week 1, I apparently dropped over 4% body fat and put on 9 lbs of muscle. Now, I know there can be some dramatic changes on BFL, but this is freaky to me. I had to have botched the measurement at one point or another, and I think it was week 0. I was following my instructions on thefitnesshub.com to the letter this time, and I don't think I did last time, but I'm not sure. I only lost 1 pound of scale weight, but I'd appreciate anyone elses thoughts on this. I want to be realistic in my expectations for future weeks here ;)

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (250 posts) at 08:09 AM:
First, it depends on how you measure body fat -- were you using calipers? Just measurements? A body fat scale? None of those methods are perfect, but they can at least be used to track progress... but the body fat scales will vary widely depending on your level of hydration, as will any method that relies on electrical impedance. Secondly, lean mass is not just muscle. The little blurb on our profiles is a bit misleading, because when you subtract your body fat, everything else that is left is counted in lean mass: water, bones, muscles, blood, organs, everything. The fact that you already had to tighten your belt a notch says you did make some significant changes, so way to go! My suggestion would be to make sure you are measuring the exact same way each time from here on out, and keep up the great work!

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1594 posts) at 08:42 AM:
your first week on BFL you lose ALOT of water. This is located between your muscles and your skin (the same areas as you'll find fat). Eating the way we used to we retain an awfull lot of water. When you did your original measurements you would have still had all this excess water in your system. Once you start cutting out sodium and increasing your water intake this causes your body to "flush" out all the excess water and put the water where it should be (in the muscles) this will give you a much "tighter" appearance and it will also show in the measurements. My first weeks BF% was 18.8 and that's because I used mybodycomp.com for my bf%, but through experience I can look at myself and estimate that the BF% was inaccurate up to as much as 3% (probably had something to do with all the pretzels and natchos I ate that day lol). Thanks guys. I figured it was partially because of some gains, as well as botching the first set of measurements. thefitnesshub.com uses body measurements to track. I don't have any calipers so the tape is all I've got. I'll just let it go for now and accept that next week's probably won't be as dramatic :D Tom

Thread: muscle gain? (87 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by starbound25 (48 posts) at 07:52 AM: muscle gain?
So is there anyway to measure at home if you have gained muscle other than being able to lift more etc I hate when the scale doesnt budge or worse goes up and my husband says "you probably gained muscle" oh yeah well how do you know haha

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (433 posts) at 08:10 AM:
Well, if the scale doesn't budge AND YOUR MEASUREMENTS GO DOWN, then you gained muscle, since it weighs more than fat and you are smaller but weight the same or more.

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1594 posts) at 08:31 AM:
like reagiesmom said your measurements will let you know if you've gained muscle or not. Also how you look in the mirror. If you've noticed that you can stand more errect (on your feet people) with your shoulders back a little further just naturally then you've probably built some muscle. You'll find that if you can't "see" any muscle that you just naturally have a better posture when you start building muscle.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (598 posts) at 08:44 AM:
Judging by the stats in your profile, starbound, you've gained about 3 pounds of muscle since the start of your last challenge. Congrats! And great job, by the way, since the beginning of your BFL lifestyle!

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (275 posts) at 10:25 AM:
If you don't lose weight but your bodyfat% decreased then you are putting on lean muscle mass.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (257 posts) at 12:27 PM:
We are probably oversimplifying this a bit, but generally speaking it is true that if you have lost inches but not weight you've probably lost fat and gained muscle. There ARE some exceptions or other possibilities but that is probably the most likely. You can actually be losing muscle at the same time as you lose fat and still not be losing scale weight if you are retaining water. You can lose muscle by doing too much cardio, or overtraining by working out too long or not waiting long enough between sessions. But, being as this is a first challenge, and being as how you say you're getting stronger, it's probably most likely that you've gained some muscle. All the body composition testing tells for sure is if you've lost fat, since lean body mass includes more than just muscle--it includes organs and bones too. You'd probably know it, though, if you'd lost bone! Good question!

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (4 posts) at 10:44 AM: Kinda silly but about guys and chest hair...
Ok being a female I of course have never had to be concerned with chest hair..LOL BUT my hubby was blessed (NOT) with a LOAD of chest hair and so we thought it would be fun to get rid of all that hair so we could see his progression throughout the challenge. Umm ok my question is.. for those who do this..do you shave it? If so do you shave it everyday? Becuase the whole stubble thing is just grossing me out. Any suggestions other than making him wear a shirt to bed LOL!! JOJO

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (4 posts) at 11:26 AM:
anybody?? I know some of you guys have turned hairless...fill me in on the big hairy secret :)

Body for Life Forum Message by rema (2 posts) at 12:02 PM:
Well, I'm a man and I think the secret to turn a man's chest hairless is the same to turn a pair of woman's legs hairless, and you, women, know a lot about that (more than us). I'm hairy as your husband, and when I want to have a pretty baby chest I first trim it with a number 0 trimmer, and then shave it whit a shaving blade. The effect only last a couple of days, ok. For more lasting results, you know the way, wax, electrolisis, ... there are not any secret.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (257 posts) at 12:16 PM:
To keep it that way, it really needs to be shaved at least evry other day, preferably in the shower. With the water running, shaving against the grain you don't even really need to lather up. I just keep a three bladed razor right in the shower and that's how I do it. I generally just start shaving about the time that I start tanning, as the hair will make a decent tan much harder to get too. Those who wait until the day before picture day to shave often find out that they have a very visible razor rash in their photos.

Thread: Update (69 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (239 posts) at 11:11 AM: Update
I haven't posted in what feels like forever. I started my second challenge on 1/3 and worked my butt off. I was eating great, working out and doing lots of baby hikes. I was starting to feel a cold coming on, but I was determined to sweat it out and work through it. However, last Friday night I woke up in the middle of the night and literally could not breathe. I jumped in the shower to try and steam it out with no luck, tried drinking some hot tea and no luck there either. I was up for the rest of the night with what felt like an asthma attack (I don't have asthma so I'm guessing). I went to the doctor Saturday morning and I was at 40% lung function and told I have Pneumonia.

I managed to stay out of the hospital, and with the help an a steriod inhaler and antibotics I'm feeling much better. It'll be a while before I'm back up to BFL workouts again though.

I spent the week resting and trying not to eat a bunch of crap. I so don't want to undo what I've gained so far (and initially I had no appeitte so I lost a little bit more weight).  The thing I was most upset about this week was that I was going to miss the Expo.

Friday came though and I realized that I felt well enough to go for a few hours and check it out.  Which I am so glad that I did. I'm also so glad that I went with Snowboardingfairy - who will walk up and talk to anyone. I am much more reserved and would have been too chicken to talk to anyone one there, even if I did feel 100%.

Thanks to Snowboardingfairy, I got to meet and talk to Cheryl, Porter, Mojo, Tracy Jefferies, Ken Young, Michelle Lee, and DreamBig.

It was such an amazing experience. I could go on for days about what it was like to meet and talk to Cheryl. But I think as much, if not more so, inspiring to me was Mojo (Malissa).  We  talked to her for probably an hour and so much that she said resonated with me and I could completely relate too. Cheryl had said earlier in the day that Mojo was the one who would "talk her off the ledge" whenever she wanted to binge. She had Mojo on speed dial and call her up. I was so impressed with having someone that would do that for you and then meeting Mojo, I could see that in her and then to hear of her own transformation. I was so impressed. I want someone I can speed dial when I'm about to cheat!!!!

Starting Monday, I'm going to start walking to slowly build back up to being about to work out (Doc says 4-6 weeks, but that's just not acceptable). I'd joined the MsFit Meltdown, which runs through the end of March and I was going to quit and start again next time, but no, I will do my absolute best and I will send in my final entry.

I recommend that everyone find that some, whether it be on Tracker or in your lives that can "talk you off that ledge" when you need it - no one can go it alone.

And if you want to be my person, I'm taking applications :) I'm also happy to reciprocate!

Get out there and get healthy!!!!

Laurie

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1570 posts) at 01:24 PM: What's wrong with me????
Last week I wrote about how badly my chest hurt after the first ubwo of the new challenge. I mean, it was PAIN. I had a hard time laying down, getting up, getting bumped. Well, by the time of the next workout it really was fine. This week, I had to postpone my ubwo until Saturday, so there was a week between chest workouts. Guess what...back to extreme pain again! It was so bad last night that I was in tears and couldn't get my shirt off. What is the deal???? It is right in the sternum area and such extreme pain that I was actually crying out in pain when I experienced it...something that is NOT a normal pain response for me. This afternoon it does feel a bit better, but I am not sure how to proceed. I don't plan to work it again until Wednesday, but I am wondering if I should just back down on the amount of weight. My highest chest press amount was only 65lbs, so I don't feel like I was over-doing it or anything. I have pressed 85lbs before. Anyone ever experience this or have any suggestions??? Thanks, gang! Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (762 posts) at 03:08 PM:
Nancy, I am not sure what BB meant, but it does sound like you have injured something. While I don't know how or where, it has been my experience that you can just tell the difference between sore from working muscles and true pain that is not right! Can you try a different exercise for awhile to see if this helps? This way you can tell if you just pulled something while doing a chest press or is it needs some medical attention. Good luck. Teresa

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1078 posts) at 05:54 PM:
If you pulled or strained a muscle, that certainly could explain it. If you do not see a doctor for this condition ( my first suggestion ), then really slack off working that area, and only gradually work it back up again over time, paying strict attention as to how it feels. Here is our situation, my husband and i are both doing BFL. This is the end of week 2...my husband is not looking to lose weight he wants to build muscle. We understand he will lose some fat, He is 6'1, started at 196 pounds, at the end of 2 weeks he has dropped 7 pounds. But he lost inches in his neck ( -1/2), chest (-3/4), stomach (-1 1/4), hips (-1/4) calf (-1/4)....the only place he gained was his thigh (gained 1/4).....Our question is...is this normal, should he expect to see inches gained or lost in the beginning? Or do men lose inches before they start to gain inches? Any info. would be appreciated. We are making sure he is getting the amount of cal at each meal that we caculated on the hussman site. Body for Life Forum Message by kimnjeff2005 (3 posts) at 03:42 PM:
We will check that, and let you know

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (598 posts) at 03:59 PM:
If that's his profile there, 20% is higher than average for a male and weight loss (specifically fat loss) right now is good. I'm NO expert on male fitness, but the first thing you'll notice is loss in fat and that can happen more rapidly than muscle gain. Two weeks is not enough time to see substantial muscle gain.

Body for Life Forum Message by kimnjeff2005 (3 posts) at 04:30 PM:
Yes that is his profile, i should have signed us both up seperatly, will do that. Thank you both for the help... i redid his BF and it is saying he went from 19.9% down to 18.5% we are new to this and just wanted to make sure it wasnt something that should not be happening...

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1078 posts) at 05:51 PM:
I would expect almost everybody to lose body fat prior to building muscle. For the simple reason that body fat is not just around the waist, but in the organs, muscle and tissue, etc. I lost a significant amount of body fat first, and didn't really see changes in muscle gains until 2nd and 3rd challenges. Yours in Health, Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by Roe (37 posts) at 06:00 PM:
It depends how "fit" your hubby is. it sounds pretty fit already. My hubby is the same way. He is about 18% bf. When starting the bfl he lost a little bit of fat and did gain muscle after a few weeks, or i should say inches. Sounds like your doing it right. keep measuring though, that will keep you two accurate. Roe

Then why on the 7 meal plan, on the bfl.com website do they add an ADDITIONAL apple, or fruit or alomnd serving when their already bread??? BFL.com is slightly different than the original BFL as written by Bill Phillips. I don't think it would hurt anything to add that extra fruit (I sometimes do but I tend to lean a touch more carb heavy than protein), but you're doing it Bill Phillips' way if you do one serving of carb and one serving of protein at each meal (6 meals).

Well, a few days back, Flower called attention to my profile and efforts and results. Everybody ( myself included ) enjoys positive feedback and support, and I certainly received my fair share and then some. For that I thank her and all of you folks here. Truly appreciated! Not only that, but apparently enough folks have validated my efforts to not only bump me up in monthly standings, but also to land me on the top 20 overall list. I'm so flattered, particularly when I am aware of the large number of amazing, inspirational and motivational people on this site ( some heralded, some not ) So you might wonder where the selfish part comes in.... well, turns out I really enjoy that kind of reinforcement and undoubtedly will crave more in the future. To get more, I must continue doing what I am doing, and even pick it up another notch. And if I am aware that more & more folks are checking out my progress, then it provides for me a whole different level of accountability. In short, it has provided me with a serious dose of extra motivation to continue in my efforts to transform my physique. Thank You. I know there is always a lot of discussion about free day, but I guess I thought I wouldn't have a problem with it. Well, yesterday, I ate a pine cone donut, an apple fritter, a Jack in the Box Ulitmate Cheeseburger, curly fries, dr. pepper, and pizza rolls. (over the course of the day) All it did for me was give me an upset stomach that I am still feeling. Plus, I gained over a pound. I just don't know if it's worth it. I know it is supposed to give you a metabolism boost, but I think next week I am going to limit my free day a lot more. Today I did really good on plan, so maybe the pound will be gone before I have to weigh in for the mini-challenge. Then again, the extra pound might be a female thing so I am not going to get upset about one silly pound. :) Thanks for listening.

Hey guys!!! Sorry I was missing for a few days... I came down with a head cold :-(. I feel better now, so I am coming back with a vengence. I am getting back to my exercise and I have followed the nutrition plan today. A little sad that the last two days haven't really been productive toward my 12 week goal... but I have to have "future vision". :-) Thank you all so much for being so supportive!!! It means a lot to me!!! Thank you!!!!!

On page 118 of the BFL book, this is one of the frequently asked questions.  Bills reply is: "If you miss a workout, you missed it.  If you miss a meal, you missed it.  Just get back on schedule and keep moving forward.  And PLEASE do no let sebacks or "mistakes" slow you down.  We've all made mistakes in the past, and we're all going to make mistakes in the future, especially if we're trying something new and challenging.  So, let's start making 'em.  Because if we're making mistakes, it means we're trying, and we're learning".

So thats what I think you should do too. :D

I've been looking at the BFL after pics in the book and I've never weight lifted before or anything, started my first challenge last Monday, and I'm just curious what do they put on themselves to make them all shiny like that after they have tanned? just baby oil or something?  or is there some body building type of oil they use lol?

hehe I know silly question, but just curious none the less. :D

A lot of people use a cooking spray like Pam. I'm not kidding!

cooking spray or baby oil will work, it makes the lighting work so you can see more definition

There are about 4 things that help to make great after photos. 1. Being really lean so you have some natural variations and striations and vascularity showing. 2. Removing all body hair in the way of showing those traits. 3. Tanning, which tends to reveal more of those traits. 4. Either an oil or a cream that brings out more of them. Too much oil looks stupid. There are better things such as Dream Tan which naturally bring out the striations and veins without looking shiny, and then to that you can spray just a bit of Pam and look really good without looking like you just jumped out of a swimming pool.

Body for Life Forum Message by HaremGirl2006 (11 posts) at 04:46 PM: Sick Days
Please let me know if you can relate to this: So, I start the week so psyched about BFL. I was reading the book every day and doing the exercise routine and eating very healthy... But I was stressed about some things with my job, and I got sick my first week of BFL. I missed two workouts and found myself eating too many carbs per meal. However... I didn't do bad exactly. I didn't eat any junk, I just ate a little more than normal. So, I am not totally down on myself. I am feeling better today, so I am going to do some light cardio. Even still, I feel as though it was a little bit of a setback. I have to find inspiration again to get back on track. I read my goals this morning again out loud... I guess that's a start. How do you deal with being sick on BFL? (Specifically, I had a head cold/ sinus infection). Thanks!!!!!!

I haven't experience this, but have had some up and downs in my BFL challenges (currently on number 2). What I've found is that if I stick to things as close as I can, let my body recover, I'll feel 100% better for doing so when I get back to it. Good Luck!

In "Body for Life" Bill Phillips does not mention pork on his list of authorized Proteins. Is pork okay? I'm fairly new to BFL and want to ensure I'm sticking to the diet correctly. Thanks, GDU61
