Flaxseed is the BEST form of "food" you can put in your body, my Opinion. So many wonderfuls cancer "free" links between the two to benefit you. I perfer it over oil.
i also supplement it in my baking. So good.
Hubby cannot eat it though, says it clogs his throat.

I ordered the Hoodia and the 'right before bed' Hoodia blend and they did nothing for me really except constipate me. It was all the water that I had to drink with each serving before each meal and bedtime that made a difference. Save your money and buy some good food and some EAS suppliments and keep to the plan.

I want to reply to a few comments posted here.
First, there was a comment about Dr. Mercola and others on the internet wanting to sell you their books and supplements. I have been a member of Dr. Mercola's site for a couple years now and have never been, nor have I felt, pressured to spend a penny on his books, supplements or anything else for that matter. By the way, the person who made this comment is doing the Body For Life program ... correct? Doesn't Bill Phillips have books and videos he wants you to buy? Doesn't EAS have supplements they want you to buy? As a matter of a fact, you cannot even participate in the competition if you don't take at least ONE of their supplements! For this reason, I do the program, but will not be competing ... as their meal replacement shakes and bars have Splenda/Sucrolose in them.
Secondly, for those of you who believe that you are using a "safe amount" of Splenda ... remember, if it is not natural, it is never safe. Also, if you have stated that you only use Splenda once a day by adding it to your Oatmeal, coffee, tea or whatever ... you may want to check the list of ingredients on any and all meal replacement or protein bars and/or shakes that you are using as part of your program.
SAS, I am sorry that you had to experience the ill effects of this chemical first hand, but am thankful that your mother assisted you in finding the root of your problem and was helpful to you in your quest to find a remedy.
Once again, when I started this thread, I was simply trying to "raise a red flag" by telling people about this chemical they use to sweeten their food and drinks. I can not and will not try to force people to change their ways. In the end we will all be held accountable for our own health and well being. My body is my temple and I choose to treat it as such.

Push ups. Push ups. Regular old push ups. Lots of them. This simple, old fashioned exercise can help totally transform your upper body fast.
When in training, I do them every day, many times on days I feel strong.

I've been doing BFL for 9 months, so I try different things. If you really want something challenging, try Crazy 8's. You find a medium weight and do 1 rep, rest 15 secs, do 2 reps, rest 15 secs, do 3 reps, etc. until you get to 8. Then go backward with 7 reps, rest, 6 reps, rest, 5, etc. By the time you get through, your arms are like noodles. And you've done 64 total reps!!! Ouch......

Think about it? Your not eating for 7-10hrs. nor drinking your h20. Try to get that 6th meal in if you can.

My 6th meal is a few hard boiled eggs (prepared beforehand and already in the fridge), a chicken breast, can of tuna, or a simple protein shake. Fast time (30-90 seconds), quick boost before your bed/fast time. Follow with BIG glass of H2O

I just had poached salmon and steamed broccoli. One of my favorite chicken options is baked in balsamic vinegar with garlic and a touch of olive oil (from the South Beach Diet book). I'm making sweet potato fries tonight - sprayed with a bit of Pam and shaken in garlic and dried rosemary before popped in the oven.
But mostly, I've gotten to the point where I don't care what combo it is -- it's just fuel for the next couple of hours.

I read on one of the discussion forums that the Eating For Life was more of a maintenance way of eating not necessarily clean. I do have it and really enjoy the egg salad! I'm am really commited to getting this weight off and looking fab in the spring so I have tried not to use too many of the recipies in it. What's your opinion on the book being for maintenance?

The efl book is great. Just watch your portion size. My favorites are Lemon Pepper Salmon (Mix ff mayo with lemon pepper and fresh lemon juice, spead on a portion of salmon and broil. YUM!) and a my own version of The Buffalo Chicken Sandwich (Brown portion of chicken breast in 1 tsp olive oil turn off heat and add Franks Original Buffalo sauce. Mix together ff mayo, ff sourcream, diced green onion and crumbled blue cheese and spread portion on chicken. Forget the buns, the bread only takes away from the yummy flavors. In fact, I use vegis as my carb and dip them into the yummy blue cheese mixture and a litte buffalo sauce.

The only significant active ingredient in here is the caffiene. So I'd say you had a caffiene reaction.
Keep in mind that caffiene is a powerful stimulant. It's on the list of restricted suppliments for Olympic athletes.
Dial back the dose, and take it a couple of times outside of workouts. Get used to what it feels like.
These can be great tools, but be careful if you haven't tried them before.

I use kickstart everyday and love it. I am almost out though and dont like the stuff that they now sell to replace it. I drink tons of water though or it does make me nervous. I dont think I would use it again if I were you because it effects everyone differently. I hope you are feeling better.

I took a caffeine pill once when I was a teenager and I never drank coffee before. Needless to say I was shaking, I couldn't vomit even though my stomach was in gut wrenching pain and I never recall every being so sick in my entire life. It was scary. Stay clear especially if it makes you feel like that! That's why they pull this stuff off shelf cause people die from stuff they are not used to!

Yeah I drank water after the workout, it was definately a reaction to kick start. :(
I talked to a friend that is a doctor the night after it happened, and he of course advised me to never take it again, since alot of the doses and stuff aren't regulated, and he explained to me what was happening to my body, with my reaction to the high caffiene does. For my body it didn't work. I guess we all have to do what works for us. He says during hockey season and different sporting seasons he sees alot of that type of reaction with people popping caffiene pills for performance and it can really screw your body up if you aren't used to it, ...heart palpatations, blood pressure sky rocketing, migrane, blured vision or worse, who knew that would happen with just caffiene, but lesson learnt. I'm gonna start reading nutrition labels better from now on. :D

but instead using the EAS HMB & a L-glutamine supplement?? I know it's taking the creatine out of the equation but I've found it just doesn't agree with some-- especially women & I think when I tried it some yrs ago I was one of them.( it's hard to recall exactly what I reacted to how..)

For some interesting information on CLA, see udoerasmus.com Keep in mind that he has a bit of a conflict of interest since he sells omega 3 oils but he is quoting other authorities on the topic. I tried it a few years back and just couldn't see that it made any difference whatsoever.

This is a good question. Music is vital. I burn music from the library. The selection is uneven, but the price is good. Some libraries allow you to download books on tape straight from a web-site I hear. We don't have that yet, but I've bought language instruction and books from audible.com on ocassion. It's not cheap so limewire or bearshare might be better for those of us on a budget. Oh, and if you look on Amazon, there's a best of 2005 critics list for every catagory of music that you can listen to that's pretty interesting. Or, I really like to listen to the program all songs considered on npr and I guess they podcast it. I don't really know what that means. Does that mean I can download a program to my I-pod for free? Does anyone know?

OK...so I watched the show Sunday night and there is another one on Monday night (8pm-Discovery Health Channel). I did like the show, however (sorry to Pamela Peeke supporters) the show did nothing to better my opinion of PP. I think she is probably a great person and many women were helped by her book. I personally am not crazy about her. Not that she is BAD, just not my favorite.
The show was great! If you get the chance to tune in and watch it tonight, I highly recommend it.

I would agree with Hot Body, I read PP's book first and it helped me understand some of the weird hormonal things going on with me and how exercise and diet could help. That inspired me to get the original BFL book and I chose to follow the original program because PP's was too "wimpy" for me (a very experienced, although lapsed, "exerciser").

Y'all with Blogger...are you familiar with the "next blog" button? You can see other blogs without needing to search specifically for something. So, you never know who's reading your shit.
I get nervous for the Trackers who are posting personal stuff in their blogs that they wouldn't want certain people to read. You just never know whether (or when) they are seeing it.
(I'm from DC, where we see confirmation processes up close and it's pummeled into our brains that ANYTHING can be dug up on people and made public at any time. Also, the writer of one of the notorious widely-read blogs dishing on members of Congress and their staff was formerly anonymous but later outed. These are "sticky" lessons! I'm not planning on running for public office, but that's enough to keep me somewhat private online.)

You guys gave me the idea to blog, but mine is a little different in scope (I think). I'm using the blog to keep myself on track with finishing my novel.
So I want people I "know" to read it, because it makes me feel more accountable somehow.
But I can certainly understand not wanting anyone other than cyber friends to read along. Especially if you're blogging about more personal stuff.
You make a good point, Hot Body! I guess the most embarassing thing I've got on line are my before pictures. But although I'd be embarassed if certain people from my real life saw them, I'm not ashamed of them. And I'm sure I'd get past the embarassment pretty quick. I don't regret posting them. They really helped me stay motivated during my challenge.

Yea I def. don't go into great detail about personal stuff. I mean I will go on about fitness stuff and my feelings and what not. But as far as my really deep dark secrets hell no. If I would not bring it up in general conversation amongst friends it will not be brought up in my blog. I mostly concentrate on the fitness side. I try to leave my kiddo & hubby out of it and try to keep it mostly on fitness. Sometimes it goes on about different things but never to deep and personal. I am one that enjoys writing and journaling. I do have one embarrassing blog entry but I was talking to everybody and there dog about it LOL and well let's not go there.
Though I do enjoy my blog but I do know there are boundaries. My husband has the same views as Hot Body. He also reads my blog, he likes my writing & sometimes he wants to know what going on inside my crazy head lol. He would let me know if I went a little too far or revealed a bit much. Thank god lol!

No, though I'm really new to it and haven't told anyone in "real life" about it yet...not sure if I will, though there is nothing to hide (yet!)
I've never been too comfortable talking about my own fitness goals or accomplishments "in person" with my "real" people...even though I want to achieve a look to be envied, I really hate for people to look at me closely and "judge." I have one sister-in-law who CONSTANTLY comments on my looks...usually whether or not my current hair length makes me look younger or not, and my weight, as in "Do you want my jeans that no longer fit me cuz I lost weight and they would probably fit YOU" or "Do you want to buy this cellulite cream I am selling?" or when I bought some smaller sized jeans that ended up being too big, "I find that those run awfully BIG." OK, I went off on a BIT of a tangent, but it's stuff like that that makes me keep all this to myself in real life, so I like the idea of a blog!

This is the best way I know to reach people all over the country. My company, Team Blacktop. Inc., is putting the finishing touches on our cookbook(I Got Your Tailgate Party Right Here!). WE are looking for regional beers to put in the book along with the great recipes we collected from tailgaters at all the football games we went to!
This is where you come in...Just let me know what kind of beer is a favorite or maybe local (for example Rolling Rock would be Pennsylvania, Coors would be Colorado)in your area. I will be doing further research, of course, but I thought this would be a quick way to get some ideas.

Another one that I ove is Victory Brewery.... not sure where it is but its in driving distance of Pittsburgh. Victory Old Horizontal is the greatest...had to try it just because of the name.... but its pretty cool- very dark and bitter . They also have a bunch of cool specialty beers like Hop Devil and strawberry blonde...

I'm sorry for the last 2 responses. I am new at this replying thing. I have seen the Select Tech dumbbells at Dick's for 299.99. I thought that was a decent price. That does not include the stand to put them on. That was an extra 150 or something like that. We are going to use some of our tax money to purchase a set. Hope this helps.

Eat 'em almost every day! Sometimes I'll use 1 egg and 3-4 egg whites, but on most days I just don't like to spend the extra time separating the eggs...so I use Eggbeaters. I've GOTTA remember to get some Southwestern style next time...those sound yummy!

I have had a perfect eating week! Surely I though I would lose weight! But no, I am again STUCK at 144.5 lbs. As my profile indicates, this happens EVERY time, and I usually end up slacking or quitting the challenge all together.
I don't think the problem is my workouts....I got all my HIIT in this week AND a 20 mile run yesterday. I only lifted once though because of an injury. But I usually do all my lifting, too.
I am getting SO discouraged because it IS hard for me to eat this way, and I have given up alcohol, too, which was hard, and I am not seeing results.
I am considering changing the source of my carbs for a week just to see if that helps. I eat a lot of whole wheat wraps, hot cereal, and beans for my carbs, so I am thinking of getting all my carbs this week from fruits and vegtables like potatoes and corn, maybe its the starches that are killing me? Also considering doing HIIT everyday for a while, and eliminating low fat cheese in some EFL recipes...
Do any of you have ideas that have helped you brake through the plateau? Opinions on my ideas? Anything???
I really had hoped to get under 140 for my race next month but just losing 5 lbs seems impossible. :(

Those actually sound like really good ideas to help bust through that plateau. Someone who is on their 3rd Challenge shouldn't have too much fat to lose, but I understand your frustration. I've tried everything to help me break through plateaus and at least for me, the only thing that seems to work is time. I find that if I stick it out and keep going, eventually it finally breaks. I wish I knew why our bodies do that. The thing that helps me the most is to remember (for me anyway) that BFL is not a weightloss program. I plan on doing this for life, so I have no choice but to continue. If you know that this is normally when you bow out of a challenge, you've got to make a resolution to push through it this time. Try the things you've mentioned for a week or two and then let us know if it worked. I'll be interested to see. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I agree... sounds like you have some good ideas already... the only other tip I would add is to "zig-zag" your calories for a little while, alternating lower and higher calorie days that average out to your target calorie zone... sometimes that can help "trick" your body into letting go of the fat it's holding on to.

Zig Zagging the calories has helped me once before. I'm hoping it will help me again. Changing your carb sources may do the trick. Those are the only carbs I eat already.

When I get stuck, my trainer makes me lift then get on the treadmill for a few minutes, lift again, treadmill, lift again, treadmill.
I too have to cut out the wraps, bread, etc. and use unprocessed carbs (i.e., potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.)
Can't wait to see you break the plateau....I get so frustrated at those points also!!!

Kelli, Using vegetables and fruits as your carbs is a good choice, and will probably do the trick. Also make sure your portion size is correct!! And make sure you are eating your six small meals everyday, and that you are getting enough protein. It sounds like you are doing great in the workout department!!! Best Wishes!!!!

Its been my expereince that losing weight while marathon training is actually tougher then you would think! A 20 miler can really take its toll on your body, in terms of calories needed to support it, recover from it, and also your water intake and balance. If you do change your carb intake just make sure it will not ibe in sacrifice for your running performance. Building muscle and distance training can be really difficult to do simultneously.

It's for both reasons. It makes it taste better and helps achieve the proper 40/40/20 protein to carb to fat ratio when combined with other foods.
Consider the following:

Let's take a "just about perfect" sample meal of 5 egg whites, 1 whole egg and 1/2 cup (dry weight) of good old fashioned regular unprocessed "Mothers" oats (or stoned rolled oats).
The nutrient profile is:
-------------------------------------
5 egg whites
20 g protein
(about 68 total calories)
1/2 cup (dry) plain, old, regular Oats
5 g protein; 27 g complex carbs (no sugar); 3 g fat
(about 150 total calories)
1 whole egg:
6 g protein; 1 g. carb; 5 g fat
(about 77 total calories)
-------------------------------------
That leaves us with 295 calories:
124 from protein; 72 from fat; and 112 from complex carbs. It results in a ration of 42% protein to 37% "complex" carbs (no sugar) and 24% fat.
That's just about a perfect 40 / 40 / 20 BFL meal!
Keep in mind that the portion sizes I mentioned are good for a man my size and weight. Others may have to adjust it accordingly. Let me know if this answers your question.

Be sure to adjust the serving size.

Larry: Just curious.. how do you prepare that meal?
I use 3 whites, one whole a touvh less than 1/2cup regular oats, splenda, and cinnimon in a blender until it is thick.. then mix in some blueberries..fry it up to make a pancake, add another sprinkle of splenda and cinnimon on top or a light layer of cottage cheese for some moisture. Do you have any other ideas?

I'm going to be real honest hear when I tell you I'm not a logger. I don't log my workouts or calories, I find it to be very mind boggling and time consuming. I read that roughly only 7% of us who don't log actually suceed. So I guess I beat the odds, as I keep making progress. I'm curious how many of you go out of your way to make sure you count every calorie and keep a "balance" ratio of carbs to protein and fat? And for those of you who do, can you give me suggestions for how you do it. I know about fitday, anything else??

I don't count calories either. I do log everything I eat on the BFL journals that you can print from the website. I try to plan a day ahead of time what I will eat. I pick a carb, protien and a veggie in 2 meals. I don't get hung up with grams of protien, carbs, fat. I don't have time to be that specific.
I find when I eat packaged foods like Lean Cuisines that I feel bloated afterwards unlike when I eat from the BFL authorized list. Sometimes, however, a Lean Cuisine is what it has to be...or I'd fall off the wagon!

I think when you’re new to the program it helps to log everything so that you can solidify your routine.
I made a simple exercise schedule that hangs on my fridge. I change up my routines but at least I know what I’m trying to improve for that day.
Sunday:
Cardio
Abs
Monday:
Upper Back & Biceps
Tuesday:
Cardio
Abs
And so on……
I use to log in to FitDay when I first started but since I don’t deviate very much day to day with my diet I don’t log everyday.
When I want to change things up a little I’ll see how it looks on FitDay first.

i follow the same workout routine each time.. well I change some exercises when I'm there if some machine is broken or i want to mix it up. I keep track of the weights I use though because I would forget otherwise and be fumbling trying to find my intensities. I eat pretty much the same every day or slight variations thereof. If it is going to be different I just do the portion of carbs and protien thing. Don't count cals anymore. I did at the start to get a feel for it. I find it too time consuming now.

I don't log my workout or track my calories either. Never did and I successfully went from a size 8 to a size 2 in less than 12 weeks during my first challenge.
For workout, I just have a good memory of what weight settings I did before. And, I find myself changing my routine quite often since I get bored easily.
For food, I just went by the BFL and EFL books. I ate the suggested type of food and went by the palm/fist rule for determining portions.

I plan and log all of my foods into fitday the night before and keep my caloric intake between 1150-1250 with 20% fat, 30% cabs and 50% protein. It only takes me about 2 minutes to plan the entire day. Once you get your staple foods in there it goes much faster.
I do not log my workouts, but I go by the sheet from the website and change it every few weeks.

I log workouts because I like to see my progression...for example when I started this challenge my 10 on cardio was a 4.0 now 9 weeks later it is a 5.7 on treadmill...so even if I plateau...i can see I'm getting stronger & faster...
I log calories so if I plateau I know where to make adjustments...
It is amazing how subtly things change over the course of the challenge...
I also add just a 1-2 line about my workouts & eating...now looking back I laugh at what I thought was hard...

I just took the anday sundae recipee from the eating for life book and pretty much put it in a quisinart gelatto machine. It turned out really well, but I've never done the anyday sundae so it might work just as well. This way I thought I could make a lot in advance and freeze it in little cups. Most people don't like to do that to gelatto, because because the freezer doesn't give it a soft freeze. But whatever. I had a lot of banannas to use up.
Recipee:
one cup milk
two scoops chocolate protien powder
four cups bananna slices
One could add anything like mint extract, espresso, a couple dried cherries, or whatever I guess.
I put it all in a blender and then poured it into my quisinart gelatto maker. That makes four servings I'm freezing in little tupperwear cups.

I made the Chili in the Eating for Life Cookbook (called HOT STUFF!). It was awesome! I am having a hard time keeping my serving to ONE portion ;)
It make a huge pot--8 total "servings". And I only put one jalapeno instead of the three it calls for. Not real spicy. I had to make it "kid-friendly".
It was a hit in my house. Hope everyone else enjoys. Very easy to make.

sixpack...HIIT Progress shouldn't be measured by miles travelled, but rather the intensity of exercise during the 20 minutes. Yes, you will probably find the milage increase as you up intensity each session, but there are too many variables to be able to say how much faster you'd have to go to get 3 miles...and it's not necessary anyway. Rate your workouts on intensity, not distance travelled :)

I change something each time to go a little farther. When I reach 3 miles, I will continue to do that. You can ALWAYS get faster. 3 miles isn't a magical #, but it is a nice round # for a goal. While I agree that you should measure your runs by INTENSITY, trying to ogo farther each time really motivates me to hang in there and RUN FASTER, which does increase my intensity. So if 3 miles as a goal works for you keep your eye on that time! Kelli

You're doing great Emeril! 2-3lbs fat loss per week is the ideal, any more than that and you could be losing muscle (which you don't want). So you're well on target. In my experience the real changes only become noticeable around the 4-5 week mark when you wake up one morning and find your pants are hanging off you :) Because we live with our bodies every day it's hard to notice the day-to-day changes. I don't know if this is the case with anyone else on this board but other people seeem to notice the changes and pass comment before I do, so don't worry and keep up the good work!

Hi guys, I STILL have some leg pain from last Wednesday when I did legs. Now, I am able to walk normally, unlike the few days after Wednesday, but should I be doing legs tonight? I can't remember it ever lasting this long? It still feels sore, not like I injured anything.
I've been fine with upper but I guess my legs are just sooooooooooooo out of shape!!!

The advice I've followed when I experience DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) is to go into active recovery, which is doing my routine at 50% of my normal load and not take the sets to muscular failure. This helps to restore full movement in the muscle, removes the lactic acid, and keeps the muscles moving towards repair and growth. I've found that by doing this, my muscles aren't nearly as sore as skipping that workout.

Anybody else training for a marathon while doing a challenge? I'm balancing the workouts by adding a slow run after my 3 HIIT on the treadmill and doing a long run outside on my day off. There is no exercise day off. But so far, it is OK.
I would not have done this on my first challenge, but now that I have it down I feel like I can tweak enough to add the running.
Someone posted a site that had a very conservative running schedule and it seems like it will work with the BFL workouts. I don't want to substitute one for the other because I like the balance of toned upper body and lower body that you get with BFL.
Let me know how YOU do it!

I'm in a similar situation, only I'm training for a half marathon and I'm mostly walking it. So obviously my intensity level isn't as high. Like you, I definitely don't want to stop the weight training, but I don't want to burn out, either. I'm thinking I'll pick one HIIT day and do long mileage instead, and have one day where I do an easy walk after a weight workout. I'm hoping there are people here on tracker who can guide us on the best way to do this. I'm also worried about the nutrition part of it!

Beth, I think the nutrition is probably perfect already. If you go on a very long (over an hour) run or walk, then maybe you will need a bar or a snack. But I find I do not need it. I am hungry an hour or so after my workout and it is important to have it planned before I go. That way I won't graze when I get hungry.
I think we'll get some great advice from the seasoned tracker runners!

I think that reagiesmom is a wealth of information on this stuff. She does this while marathon training, hopefully she will chime in. I too and doin the 1/2 marathon and refuse to give up the weights. I do 1 run as an interval run, one as a long run, and 1 I just run for a set amount of time,usually 45 minutes. That is my cardio other than the ocassional bike ride. But I do find that after about an hour of running I am hungry. But it hasnt been a real issue yet. Hope this helps somewhat......

shKelly kicks butt! Thanks so much for posting about the bench lunges. My legs feel like jello so I know I worked at a 10!!!! I started out trying the bench lunge without any weight, then alternated with regular lunges with weight. I got to where I could do the bench lunge holding 12lbs but that was it! Thanks for helping me get my LBW where I want it to be. Now I feel like I am actually making a difference:)

How accurate is the "calories burned" read out on cardio equipment? The other day, after my 20min HIIT, the readout told me I had burned 270 calories! That's a lot.
The Hussman site, as well as BFL says not to trust that readout. But why? I'd like to know the science behind it and just how accurate or inaccurate it really is. What do you think?

I think the readout follows a mathematical formula, based on weight, speed and time. 3.0 mph burns X number of calories per minute at X weight. These are not necessarily accurate. I use the readout as a guide; example if I can burn 200 cal in X minutes, can I up that number the next time around.
Use it as a tool, not as gospel.

My opinion is not all that scientific...but some cardio equipment (like my stationary bike here at home) has a calorie read out, however it doesn't ask for age, height, weight, sex...etc. That makes a huge difference in how many calories are being burned!! Or at least that is what I have always thought...Also, I think one reason BFL says to not trust the calorie read out is because the majority of your calories are burned during the hour after working out w/ cardio & weights. That is the reason it is best to wait an hour or so before eating anything.
Hope this helps a little...I am anxious to see some of the other responses as well.

Up until last week I would wear a polar heart rate monitor that calculates calories spent(my battery died, i want to cry). The cardio equipment at my gym usually reads twice as many cals more than my monitor, quite disappointing i know! 4sweetums is right though, a large sum of the calories you burn are after the workout, if you are doing HIIT the right way.
If you can afford it, the heart rate monitor is a definitely worth buying. I'm surprised every time by how many calories I burn during weight training. If you decide to buy,they sell different Polar HR models, make sure you buy the one that calculates calories! Hope this helps.

YES!!! I'm so excited...I've been doing 25 modified push-ups first thing every morning since Jan. 2 and this morning I did 13 regular style push-ups and finished with modified style. This is a MAJOR accomplishment for me -when I started on Jan. 2 I could NOT finish one complete regular push up, they had to be modified!!! One of my three goals for this challenge is to be able to complete 20 regular push ups...and only three weeks in, I'm half way there.
I agree with Young Guns...I don't think adding push ups is overtraining -on the contrary, it has helped me with upping my weights for UBWO's (although I did have a tough week 1 with soreness!!)

If you are more concerned about how it will look in the photos (definition) try trimming the hair with the #1 attachement of a pair of electric clippers (or if the hair is super curly, maybe a #2). It won't be smmoth to lie next to in bed, but it won't be a prickly as stubble either. And I have found that (depending on the guy and the hair) that it does'nt really show up that much in the photos. I used a #1 clipper cut in my 12 week photo, and it's almost as smooth looking as a razor cut.

Best wishes Laurie. I've has pneumonia several times and I know it's important to avoid a relapse. So start back carefully. If you can get a peak flow meter you can check your lung capacity on a daily basis and get a good idea of how well you're recovering.

Actually, I saw a doctor a long time ago about that pain and other in my wrist and foot. I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. I attribute the fact that my arthritis symptoms disappeared to weight lifting. When I take time off, the symptoms do reappear. I was already feeling some in the sternum and figured it was just the arthritis cropping up. But then I worked out and had that incredible pain, starting probably 5-6 hours after my workout and lasting at an intense level for maybe 10-12 hours then it started to subside. Today I feel better, still feel it a little bit, but it now feels more like the normal soreness of a workout. Funny thing is that the first week of the challenge, I had this problem on Monday (my first ubwo). I did the same routine on Friday and was fine. then a week went by before working it again and had the problem again. So strange.....
So, I guess I should still go see the doc, or no??? Phatty - I read some info on that...yes, it kind of describes the feeling, although I had no pain radiating down my arm - the pain was in my middle chest area.

i had quite a few animal crackers and milk on my free day.. maybe a little more portions than normal.. didn't feel bad during or after. and on the plus side. I had lots of energy for my HIIT this morning!! I agree after a few weeks you feel out your freeday equilibrium of sorts.. enough to satisfy but not enough to make yourself sick.

I attended the BFL Expo on Sat & what an inspiration!
One of the former champs mentioned that if you're not getting sore, you're not making improvements. I would recommend increasing your weights so you're completing your sets to muscle failure.

I can't remember a day in the last year and a half that I've been on BFL that one of my muscles has not been sore :-) Yes, increase your weights and change your routine around, even if it's just the order of muscles worked or different exercises than you have been doing for the past few weeks.

When that happens (and it has happened to us all) turn up the Intense-o-meter up a few notches. Shake up your workout and hit the muscle with a slightly different exercise! Drinking a ton of water and getting plenty of sleep will surely limit the soreness factor, too.

You should get a little sore, everyone reacts differently. I get really sore on LBWO but not as much as UBWO and I really hit 10s, people probably think I am rabbid. I don't get as sore in the upper body but my legs do kill me after a good lunge workout.

From coaches in high school during daily doubles I heard it was good to use icy hot or tiger balm and saran wrap to combat soarness. Does that really help? And is it good to soak in a hot bath right after a work out? I use to go to school in Japan and all the students in martial arts clubs wore those adhesive strips that emmit heat for like eight hours. I guess that's something to think about if one was desperate, bored, and had a couple of bucks to spare.

Hi gang!
Often I hear people express their frustration with trying to stay on track with Body-for-Life or another fitness program they have attempted. Sometimes they are tempted to call it quits and just take it easy... And then there are those who keep putting off starting an exercise program until the 'time is right'...
To those folks I just want you to think about a few things...
Step back and take a look at your life... Are you willing to live the rest of your life fat and out of shape? How are you going to feel in the elder years of your life when you realize that you never achieved one of the biggest dreams you ever had - to finally live up to the potential that has been crying to be realized for oh so long... Is that OK? Is it alright to let all those naysayers who have doubted you win? Are people going to remember you as just another dreamer who never had the class and character to pursue his dreams with courage and determination? Are you willing to sign up for a lifetime of regret by letting your body go? We both know the answer... Absolutely not!!!
So then it's inevitable... At some point you MUST find a way to come to terms with any issues that have kept you from FINALLY achieving your dreams. It is no longer a matter of IF but WHEN it will come to fruition... So now I ask you to treat your Body-for-Life program as not only a fitness challenge but as your destiny... That regardless of any setbacks or frustrations you may encounter that you are no longer going to settle for being less than your best. Let the rest of the world wallow in mediocrity and living day-to-day in regret. It's time for you to show what you are made of...to once and for all let the athlete within you emerge...
Of course, when you dare to commit to excellence there will be many who will tell you that you don't need to be in that good of shape and that you are fine as you are. But I dare you... Go ahead and try to settle for living by others' lower standards. I dare ya! The truth is you can't... You wouldn't be reading this if you were willing to settle for a life of unfulfilled dreams...
So just be grateful that God has blessed you with the desire to excel... Put another log on the fire and let your passion burn! Get in the gym and take on life full force. You're going to have a great BFL challenge!!! Of course, there are no guarantees in life (You want a guarantee? Then buy a toaster!!! Yuk! Yuk!)... But I will guarantee you this...
Give it your all for 12 weeks...the exercise...the food and nutrition plan... Do your absolute best! I guarantee that you won't have one ounce of regret... In fact, you just may finally see the REAL and glorious you coming to life...after so many years of lying dormant. Instead of asking "How can I do this?" you'll be asking the much more empowering question "How can I NOT do this?!!!" Conversely, if you continue to put it off I can also guarantee you'll have a ton of regret!!!
Knowing that at some point you are going to have to rebuild your body in order to live the life you dream of I say let's get going NOW!!! You're lucky to have found such a great and effective program like Body-for-Life. With your passion and commitment and BFL you are going to be so jazzed after 12 weeks! You'll finally be excited about your life and where it's going... That after all these years you are finally becoming the person you always wanted to be...
It's inevitable...

So true Jim... Thanks for the positive words. By the way.. I'm in week 10 and in a serious funk that I can't seem to snap out of. Your words may have just done the trick. Actually, this is C1 and I'm doing more preparing for C2 then following the program at this moment. I'm trying to complete my home gym, my C2 goals together, my foods ready, and my energy set for an explosive C2 to start on Jan. 23. I will be way more prepared for C2 then I was for C1. I'm almost ready to rock!

Thanks guys for your kind words. I create these types of posts when I'm trying to work through my own issues...it helps me comes to terms with my own day-to-day challenges.
It's a real bonus to know that sharing it is helping my BFL buddies!
BTW -- I am working on my book about coping with 10 years of chronic illness and my subsequent comeback using BFL. The fist step is to capture the history. I'v writtne most of the content for 1996 and 1997 and will be moving ahead again now that the holidays are over. I'm keeping copies of all my posts and will include them ina separate chapter...

LOL, One of my soldiers told me that saturday night. So I guess changes are happening. Sunday woke up and weighed in at 190. Thats 9lbs in 2 weeks, is that possible?
Anyone else just finish week 2 that is having good results?
I think this is gonna get expensive, but I refuse to buy new pants (maybe a new belt) until this is over...

I have adjustable waist BDU's and believe me last summer they were all the way out. Now I could probably go down a size but these are ok, I like the baggy feeling right now.

If you are missing your captain, maybe one of you could take the lead, get the others to send you the numbers and then forward them to crone. You can get the rules from the Jan mini-challenge thread. I'd also be glad to help in any way I can if you have any questions for example.
But really, there is no reason to give up or get discouraged. Keep your heads up! That is why this is a challenge, just another bump in the road to overcome!

Team 10 captain here....my bad - I had to abruptly go to Key Biscayne last Sunday for work and our hotel's internet was still screwed up from the hurricane. Then had a death in the immediate family...I hope you guys can understand. Please don't kick me out...I need this! If you don't hear from me every couple of days you can always email me too! Crone - it might help to post something about standings again, soon. People forget and get busy and sometimes it is just a matter of putting out posts and yes, kind of bugging people, until you get them to report their stats.
To anyone who is on a team
If the captains are having difficulty getting info from the team members, it holds the whole challenge up. If you are on a team, hold up your end of the bargain!!! You are part of a team and accountable to your team members, your captain and even to the other teams! Be sure to get your info to your captain on time and Crone will be able to post standings - she can't do it without your input!!!

Noooooo, you can not change teams because we are on the same team and I think we are cranking. I can not believe how clean I am eating and havent missed a workout yet - thanks to my team. GO TEAM 3!!! You guys are really keeping me accountable.

I know this "Off-topic," but I felt as it should have its place on the main forum since today is a day that we remember a great American. This may not be the place for "political" type comments and if you feel that way, I understand. Bear with me on this one. I have a BFL connection, as remote as it might be.
As a very young boy in the 1960's living in the near west suburb of Oak Park outside of Chicago, I don't remember the political and cultural landscape very well. I grew up in a family that didn't tolerate racial bigotry. Yet I found myself a part of a culture that knew plenty of fear. I do remember my parents feeling very scared when Cicero was burning after Dr. King's life was cut short. I do remember going with my parents and grandparents to the "breadbasket" of downtown Chicago and visiting an all-black church and how the people were so full of love, energy and kindess. I do remember whenever we traveled in these parts, that my parents would tell us kids to "lock your car doors" while the car was still moving! Needless to say, I was conflicted as a youngster, yet wanting to understand "why people had to have such fear and hatred."
I have always considered Martin Luther King one of my heroes. As a believer, I feel a certain kinship of faith. As a man, I feel deep respect of his convictions. As a human being, I have a deep admiration of his passion! He spoke with the man's tongue, but if ever a man has moved me in a deep and profound way, as if God Himself were speaking, Dr. King would be at the top of the list.
How does this tie in to Body-for-Life??? For me it does, because in my pursuit of health and wellness, I find myself in a certain pursuit of "truth." Thoreau called it "living life deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life." Living with purpose..."to live deep, sucking the marrow out of life." He further stated in Walden, "I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary." If I am to truly grow as a human being, I must use this BFL experience to grow in mind, body and spirit. This journey has brought many of us full circle in our lives and has deepened and enriched our lives in ways we never anticipated. For me this journey began in my mind, as I confronted my reality. My first challenge a year ago was an assault of best health on my body. As I journeyed deeper into my first challenge, I began to realize more and more that this would ultimately be a war with my fickle spirit.
So on this day, I remember a man, Dr. King, who lived life deliberately and faced life down. Ultimately, it cost him his life. But when he lived...he truly LIVED!
Long live Dr. King and his message of "judging a man by the content of his character." May we Trackers be greater men and women of character and greater Americans as the result of our pursuit of truth in mind, body and spirit.

I just had to say THANK YOU to my BFL Friends who are ALWAYS there for me...I couldnt have gotten thru the last few days without Y'all.

The past 2 weeks have been "trying" to say the least.(Thats why I havent been very active on here) My son was hit by a car(hes OK, but gunna be scarred pretty bad), my lil guy Rocky has made it thru 2 more episodes of heart failure and Im runnin on basically NO sleep. For the 1st time since August-I started having doubts about myself and my program. Then, I get a call from SHKELLY or KANA and it reminds me how much BFL has changed my life, and what FANTASTIC friends I have met thru BFL. It also reminded me how important BFL and this lifestyle is to me, my health and my sanity.
An extra special Thanks to KANA for the call this morning (and yes, Im going to call you back-I promise!).

WOW Dana - I hope he is okay. I had a scary episode on 12/23. A BIG Lincoln Navigator, barreled my shopping cart to the ground and the cart hit me, slamming me to the ground in the crosswalk of Walmart. I was scared to death, I thought the car was not going to stop and would run over me as well, but it was a very close call. My left arm and shoulder were slammed to the ground and I am waiting to see what the MRI shows.
It has put a huge damper on my UBWO and made me very irritated that the last few weeks of my first challenge were so "challenging". But this is for life and I will get through whatever it takes to keep making progress.
Hope your son is doing well and keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to those of us who are new to BFL and tracker.
