mine is 50-55 , been a little highr the last 2 days , fighting a virus, I feel like roadkill. Amazing how the body works its been 70-80 last 2 days fightinf this virus, but like I said for 50-55 for as long as I can remember my doctor is always amazed at it. I have recorded as low as 46 a few times right when I awake and throw the monitor on but those days are rare.

Body for Life Forum Message by blessedgirl (8 posts) at 07:42 PM: Hey ladies what is your fav. brand of workout pants?
Hey I am looking for some new pants I like the low waist with a boot cut. I usually get mine at target (mossimo). I was just wondering what other brands you all like? Thanks! Carmel

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (657 posts) at 07:49 PM:
I shop for my workout clothes at Target, too, but I mostly get the Danskin items. I need to get more clothes (to fit better), so I'll be interested to see what others post here!

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (77 posts) at 07:57 PM:
I got the track pants that Target sells...don't remember the brand but the waist is lower and I guess you'd consider them boot cut...they are super comfy... It's been to HOT here to wear them lately though! ~Eileen

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (25 posts) at 07:59 PM:
I usually get the mossimo brand from target, I went to sports authority and was rolling my eyes at the 60$ pants and tshirts..and then I quickly left and proceeded to target! Old navy has some cute ones too. I need some new ones, my pants actually fell down tonight while on the elliptical which of course my husband thought was hilarious since our machine is in front of a huge bay window visable to ALL THE NEIGHBORS...UGH!

Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (301 posts) at 09:18 PM:
Id have to say Danskin brands..or anything with a "wicking" fabric to draw moisture away from your skin. I mostly do the danskin, but i do have a pair of mossimo that i wore all the time before our new dryer shrunk the length!! LOL

I just bought some Nike low waist I really like at Sports Mart. I like the material.

Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (81 posts) at 09:39 PM:
Whatever's on sale at Marshall's. Actually, I love workout outfits made by Lululemon. They're a little bit pricey, but worth it. The materials are awesome and the fit is always flattering. Unfortunately, you have to go to Canada or some big cities to get them.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitnesscrazedmom (52 posts) at 09:49 PM:
I LOVE Amma, they are pricey, but I have had these 2 pairs for a few years now and they still look new. I even wore them through my pregnancy and they went right back to their right size after the pregnancy. They wisk the moisture away wonderfully.

Body for Life Forum Message by LOVE4KIDS (48 posts) at 06:05 AM:
I just bought some last week and started using it. Too early to tell if it is working. I also bought mine at GNC and the guy there told me that if I didn't like it I could get a full refund as long as half of the bottle is left. I figured I couldn't lose that way so I bought it. I'll let you know how it is working for me. Karyn

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (304 posts) at 10:47 PM:
I used the original hydroxycut back in the day with ephedra and had some great results. The man ingredient in the original fat burners that made them work was Ephedra (its in most prescription wieght reduction meds) and it was banned and they no longer put it in any popular ones. I have heard the bans been lifted and its available again but not mainstream. Just be carefull if you go that route.

Body for Life Forum Message by germansugaraddict (3 posts) at 11:08 PM:
I used hydroxycut with ephedra 3 years ago and lost 30 pounds in just a few months (which I kept off with ease). I got my best friends and boyfriend (at the time) hooked on it as well. Then I got pregnant (so I quit hydroxycut), and by the time she was born they only had ephedra-free hydroxycut. I tried it and it didn't do a thing. Nothing.

Thread: feeling light headed and shaky (149 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (41 posts) at 06:16 AM:
tgannt, like everyone has mentioned: where are your carbs? You are probably experiencing hypoglycemia. Your brain needs, literally, 100g of carbs/day for it to function correctly. We need some sugar in our system for energy. Ever notice someone on Atkins--they aren't as "sharp" and seem kind of bitchy. It's due to the low carb content. The trouble with the American society is we eat WAY too many carbs (averaging about 400-500 grams/day) but there has to be a happy medium. I eat about 120-150g carbs/day divided up into my 5-6 small meals. Hope that helps. Suzanne PS: I too have been experimenting with leaving off the starchy carbs for my 5ht/6th meal. Too early to tell anything at this point, but I'll let you know.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (275 posts) at 09:16 AM:
I'm sure you are not getting enough carbs, but I don't think that necessarily explains the symptoms you are having. Usually, hypoglycemic episodes are characterized by light-headedness, a foggy mental status, blurred or diminished vision (including some spots), weakness, trembling, and a SIGNIFICANT craving for sugar or something sweet or heavy. (Such as ice cream or a cinnamon roll or a sugar drink.) Generally, nausea and vomiting is not part of the package. Therefore, you may have a case of the stomach virus. Not that you don't need to manage your diet better, but I just wouldn't assume that all the problems are due to low carb intakes.

I'm trying to add my "custom" food list, and it is telling me that the #'s don't add up right, and wont add it to my list. I'm sitting here w/ all this food typing in it's info, and it keeps rejecting certain ones. What can I do??

Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (140 posts) at 03:49 PM:
Make sure that the saturated, mono, and poly fats add up to (but not more than)approximately the total fat content. Also you have to fiddle with carbs sometimes if it thinks the food should have more than it says.. I find the fat thing is the problem 95% of the time.

Body for Life Forum Message by Two For The Show (10 posts) at 04:15 PM:
We downloaded the fitday program onto our computer for $$20. It was worth it and it does not have those glitches. For the custom foods it takes whatever values you give it. When we used fitday.com, we would just fiddle with the numbers until it would accept the values. The carbs is what usually did it. If you are really into using fitday... we would suggest buying the download. We use our daily! Stef :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (657 posts) at 07:25 PM:
That happened to me once. It said that the carb content didn't match the calories entered (this food didn't have protein or fat). I learned that the nutritional label was misprinted when I bought a refill later on! Remember: each gram of carbs and proteins is equal to 4 calories; fat is 9.

OK, so yes I know I'm still in week 2 (almost finished..yay me!) But, I have a question about my final pictures. Since I just *know* I'm gonna be RIPPED at the end of my 12 weeks, barring any injury.... How do I learn to flex and really show my muscles/leanness? Who gives flexing classes around here? :o) And when you go get professional photos taken, ermmm, do you just call them and say..."Hey, just finished BFL, and need some awesome photos taken..." Suggestions, ideas or any comments will be appreciated. My after pictures from before aren't the greatest and I'm thinking ahead because I'm gonna win and I need great pictures!! :oP Suzanne

On the day I had my pictures taken, I brought some pictures of past winners that I had printed off the internet, this way they could see what kinds of poses etc. that I was looking for. Make sure they sign a release so that EAS can use your pictures! I wish you all the best!!!! Hugs, Sylvia aka Cookie1135

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (275 posts) at 08:21 PM:
Several things here. First of all, don't wait until you're done to contact a photographer. They may be booked up for several days or even weeks ahead so get one arranged now. Second, research the champions and find the poses you like, and then practice in front of a mirror on how to make your muscles stand out best. It takes lots of practice to be able to flex all the body parts simultaneously, and it is serious exercise in itself. The last week you might want to be doing NOTHING BUT flexing for your exercises, especially if you have lost the fat you wanted to. Last, make sure you have the skin tanned the way you want and think about what "makeup" you want to use to enhance that look. There are products you can use that are designed for bodybuilders to make the skin look better and bring out the striations.

You know that my baby boy was really sick, well guess who got it, but the ADULT VERSION!  I was SO SICK today, but it didn't really come on until I got off my elliptical glider.  Did 20 minutes even though my feet were killling me in pain, I finished it, sat down, then did 3 sets of crunches on my medicine ball.  THEN IT HIT ME! I was on the couch.  SICK AS A DOG! All I ate all day was a little scrambled egg whites.... I moped around all day and even forgot to feed my son supper, but when I saw him pull down the old pizza box and still 2 pieces of pizza out of it from Free day yesterday, I felt so bad, so I made him some chicken nuggets.  I feel like Sh**, and I mean it, had homework to do, a test to take tomorrow, have to study during football tomorrow and read over everything and I have until 1100 PM to take the test,,, I don't know how I am going to do it, because I am NOT studying tonight, I am resting! I vomited so hard today, I thought my guts were coming out! I know doesn't paint a real pretty picture but if you could see me right now you would know how I feel!  Please keep me in your prayers, I am going to miss church again tomorrow...

Update: today I asked the trainer to show me how to use the squat rack, and he REALLY was discouraging me from using it over the Smith machine. So I went ahead and did my squats on the Smith. Articles and opinions on the web are ALL OVER THE PLACE regarding the Smith machine. No, actually they're simply polarized: people either love it or hate it. Is the Smith machine really so evil? Does anyone have experience using it and then changing out because of poor results or injury or something like that?

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (304 posts) at 10:42 PM:
You can always do squats with a bench under you that way when you squat don't you will not go to far and injure your knees. I am not a fan of smith machine squats because I feel that it doesn't allow for free range of motion and that this can lead to knee injuries.

This has been on my mind for sometime to respond here on tracker. There's no question any time you get your workout or cardio in is the best time for you. But it is always recommended for the biggest bang for your buck is to get workouts in first thing in the morning when you rise. The WHOLE PREMISE here is that you are going from a totally rested state to a high engery state which raises your metabolism for the whole day. The secondary factor is that your stomach is empty and you will not have to burn through carbohydrates first before you get to the fat, as you would at any other time of day - after having your meals.

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (77 posts) at 08:00 PM: Do you change up your exercises week to week?
Just wondering if you use the SAME two exercises per body part every week, or if you change up (and how often). I'm finishing up week 3 and have changed one or two, but find that I'm already getting a little tired of some exercises. Is there any reason to stick with the same ones throughout the challenge (I'm thinking not?) or is it best to keep things changing along with increasing the difficulty/weights? ~Eileen

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (657 posts) at 08:03 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by blessedgirl (8 posts) at 08:13 PM:
I think it's best to keep changing them up a bit, maybe every two weeks. Like hotbody said it keeps your muscles guessing.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (275 posts) at 08:16 PM:
Well, since you only do the exercises 3 times every two weeks, I would suggest changing up after four weeks and 8 weeks. That only gives you six times with each exercise during the challenge. That way, You don't get stale, but you also don't switch up so often that you scarcely can tell which exercise is the most helpful to you.

I am sure glad that the sinus infection is not catchy here. I work a Midnight shift (no one else on duty in my area) and can never find anyone to releive me. I usually end up sick as a dog and dragging myself to work. 2 months ago it was with a temp of 100.6. I felt horrible all night. I hope everyone is feeling better real soon.

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1704 posts) at 06:06 PM:
Thanks guys for your kind and supportive replies. I finally stopped coughing up green stuff. The infection got into my lungs as well. I had wondered why this hit me so hard. Typically, a sinus infection never used to affect me that much. Theoretically, with pituitary failure all I have to do is take extra cortisol medication to mimic what a normally functioning endocrine system would do and it 'shouldn't' affect me any more than any one else. However, I'm finding that things like this hit me a lot harder than they used to before I developed this disorder. So much for my doctor's theory! The extra medication has made it hard to get to sleep before 4AM this week and I have a hard time sleeping during the day. Hopefully, I'll be good-to-go on Monday! Take care, Jim

Thread: Running Question (101 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1113 posts) at 06:55 AM: Running Question
Are there any 5k runners out there?  How do you prepare and how well have you done.  I want to do really well.

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (41 posts) at 08:17 AM:
Preparing for a 5K after doing BFL HIIT is easy IMO. I sweat more and die more doing my 20 minutes than when I run at an even pace for 3.1 miles. In the shape you are in, I'm sure doing a 5K without even 'training' for it will be a piece of cake...ummmm but only if its your free day. :o) Suzanne

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1113 posts) at 08:30 AM:
I would like to win one or come close to winning one for my age group. I ran 3 miles in 28 minutes on the treadmill and that was ok. I plan on doing intervals and doing long runs and short runs. Thanks for the help

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1586 posts) at 09:32 AM:
Jeremy - don't know if this is a good way to do it or not, but I trained with intervals and actually ran it in intervals, sort of. More like a Fartlek run, I guess you could say!!! I ran at a comfortable steady state, then had spurts of really sprinting, then back down to comfortable until i had recovered, then back to sprinting again. It was difficult during the actual race since there were SO many people running...I spent a lot of time navigating around people and it made it difficult to keep with my plan, but I did the best I could. Try to keep that in mind when training so you will be prepared for it during your race. Also, be sure to do a good portion of your training outside. Running on the treadmill is very different than running outside....and on the treadmill, give yourself some inclines to more closely relate to outdoor conditions! Good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (275 posts) at 10:24 AM:
Depending on the race, some of the runners are people who are naturally built for running and are very fast! I don't want to discourage you, but setting a reasonable goal rather than trying to win the first time out might not be a bad idea!

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1113 posts) at 10:35 AM:
Mike it is not discouraging at all. I have done one before and did well. I play basketball and that has helped as well. I have more of a body to do that than to body build. Even though I keep getting stronger and stronger I do not get bigger. Plus I doubt that I will lose muscle mass if I keep strength training and eat enough.

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (41 posts) at 10:55 AM:
Jeremy, You wont lose muscle mass by doing a 5K. I've trained for 5Ks as well as 20Ks while doing BFL and didn't have a problem keeping up with my workouts or losing muscle. The problem came when I started doing full marathons: loss of muscle and injuries. HalHigdon.com is a good place to start... Suzanne

Thread: EFL meals and weight gain.... (214 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (641 posts) at 08:00 AM: EFL meals and weight gain....
Okay, so I wasn't eating meals from the EFL cookbook the first two weeks of BFL, but added them in this third week and my weight has jumped UP! Have any of you had this problem?? I think from here on out, I'm going to be eating the super clean, regular BFL dinners. Oh, well. Any thoughts?

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (374 posts) at 08:37 AM:
I love the EFL book, but I find it extremely difficult to gauge portion size when using it for the dinners. There are a lot of "little extras" in the recipes as well that you need to be aware of. I have definitely had the best physical results during challenges when I have used only the original food lists from the original BFL book. Now I use the EFL cookbook mostly for free meals. One of the best is Mom's Enchiladas!! I use the red sauce instead of the green. My whole family loves them.

Body for Life Forum Message by goirish (1 posts) at 09:07 AM:
I used the EFL book through my first challenge and this challenge with great success. I put each recipe into the fitday program I download and found the portions to be very high in calories - so I found ways to work around them. For example the french toast I use a 40 calorie bread which than comes to 203 calories. The Chicken Enchilda's are only 250 calories if you use the right corn tortilla's. I am a number crunchier and have figured out nearly every recipe. I doen't use the shakes - way to many calories!!! My friends think I am crazy but I weigh everything and I write down everything I eat. With the EFL I average about 1300 calories a day. My first challenge I got down to a size two - this challenge I have lost 7 pounds so far.

Body for Life Forum Message by Lese (18 posts) at 09:15 AM:
I did the challenge a couple years ago and ate off the origial list. I lost sizes very fast but didn't make it past 7 weeks because of the food. The time off I also gained 30# (18 more than I lost) This time I am using the EFL cookbook. I was able to complete my first challenge ever and am on my second. The results were not as fast as the first but I was able to stick with it. This is something I could do for life. I plan to do this forever and have my body get better everyday. Not to just loose to gain like last time.

Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (42 posts) at 09:18 AM:
I eat from the EFL cookbook for dinner and then use the left overs for lunches. The only thing to be aware is his portions are off on some meals. Whatever you make use YOUR best judgment on portions because sometimes his are huge.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1235 posts) at 09:30 AM:
Call me ....lol btw Gorish.... right on! The EFL has some great alternatives for our yummy sinful desires but it is more geared t'words maint. But if you are looking to get healthy and make this a life-style then EFL works great for your BFL program. If you are looking for results like the before and after photo's then follow the BFL eating plan from the actual book. Notice it's a bit more cut and dry and the EFL has a little more to it. Though I have to admit EFL is GREAT! I love it! It helped me get through my challenge. Though I have to admit the BFL meal plan from the book with the choices from the list he provides is a bit more strict than EFL. IMO. -T

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (293 posts) at 09:31 AM:
I eat from the EFL cookbook every single day and have never gained weight from it. You do have to watch portion sizes, though, because that book has to be usable by everyone, but my portion size and yours are not necessarily the same.

Body for Life Forum Message by zooman (381 posts) at 09:38 AM:
I have used the EFL book since day 1. I have been doing this for over a year. While my change has not been phenominal it has been a steady ongoing change. I think if I ate like the BFL book suggests I would not have stayed the course. For me this is a lifee long commitment and eating using the EFL book makes it a lot easier. I do the same that others have suggested though. When I look at the recipes I try to find products lower in cals, fats or carbs. They are also great for meals the next day. It also helps that most of the meals are quick and easy to prepare.I might try to go by the BFL eating suggestion when the time comes that I want to see how far I can go if I can't reach my goal of a six pack and under 10% b.f.

Body for Life Forum Message by cookie1135 (1433 posts) at 10:01 AM:
I used EFL during my challenge with great results!! But you must use correct portion sizes. Remember a portion size is the size of the palm of your hand or the size of your fist!!! Portion sizes are extremely important!!!!! Hugs, Sylvia aka Cookie1135

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (275 posts) at 10:20 AM:
THE PROBLEM with the EFL book is that nobody reads it--everybody just gets it and starts cooking. If they read page 73 they would see that the PORTION SIZES are too large for women. They are midway between what it takes for maintenance for a man and woman, which means that women eating the whole portions will gain weight. FINALLY, Bill has put up portion guides on his website, but earlier on the only thing that told you that was the little blurb on page 73!! You are not the first nor will you be the last who has fallen into this trap. For a lady to lose weight on EFL, a portion size ought to be about 60% of what the book says.

Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (42 posts) at 10:53 AM:
I don't cook so you are right I have never read it! My husband (who isn't even following body for life right now) cooks from it for us for dinner. We love it. But portion size obvoiusly would be differnt from a book written by a man. (my husband always gets bigger portions so it works).

Body for Life Forum Message by LincolnJenn (43 posts) at 01:02 PM:
I fell for the portion sizes too. But, now I have figured out what is right for me. I just pre-pack the recommended portion sizes and give my husband a full EFL portion. Then I take 1/2 to 1/3 out for me. So far so good.

Body for Life Forum Message by Two For The Show (10 posts) at 04:28 PM:
We love the EFL book, but when hitting a challenge hard we stick to the tried and true BFL AUTHORIZED FOOD LIST... no EFL for us. I know it has worked for some...J-Dub, Linne to name a few, but because we started off with BFL and didn't buy the EFL until later on, we just stick to what worked so well for us. We are very strict with the meals. Turkey~Brown Rice~Veggie. Salmon~Sweet Potato~ Veggie. Eggwhites~Oatmeal. You get the idea. Stick to the basics.....thats our advice. Stef~Russ

Body for Life Forum Message by wdrew (263 posts) at 06:13 PM:
I have to agree with the people who say they lost more weight sticking with the BFL food list. My weight loss was much MUCH faster when I just stuck to that list. But I also don't think I could have stuck with eating from that list, so the EFL book has kept me going. This challenge I'm going to try a two week rotation with two weeks on EFL book and two weeks on the BFL list.

Body for Life Forum Message by SuzyQ (33 posts) at 08:45 AM: Disney World Trip (in parks for 2 days)
Taking a trip next week (WED-SAT)to Disney. In the parks for two days (Epcot and Magic Kingdom). I can handle the weights/cardio on the trip because we are staying in a hotel that has a nice gym. I'll take one day as a free day. But I was wondering if anyone knows or has suggestions of how to handle eating small, healthy meals while there. I know that you can get a salad with chicken in Magic Kingdom at one of the food places but I didn't want to eat "bars" for the rest of my meals snacks.... Does anyone know what the food options are at the parks?

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (374 posts) at 09:04 AM:
I carried tuna pouches, small Ziplocs of fresh veggies and small apples in a backpack. There is a place called Liberty Tree Tavern at the Magic Kingdom which is a sit down restaurant where you can get salmon. Other than that, I did not see much at the Magic Kingdom other than the old standby of grilled chicken salad.

Body for Life Forum Message by onetallmama (33 posts) at 11:36 PM:
Maybe you can check out their website before your leave. At Disneyland we always get the grilled chicken kabobs in Adventureland or BBQ in Frontierland. We are leaving tomorrow for an overnight trip to Disneyland and I am bring raw almonds and cut up fruit and veggies for our snacks. (The park will let you bring in snacks in a backpack). We are also bringing our own food for the first day since they have a picnic ground with lockers outside the park. We are having turkey sandwiches and fruit for one meal and chicken wraps with veggies and humus for the other. Thank goodness for our free day otherwise this would be too complicated. Hope you have fun.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitnesscrazedmom (52 posts) at 11:42 PM:
I go through this all the time as I live in florida and we visit parks such as busch gardens, Sea World and universal studios frequently. I freeze water the night before and then put the water in a backpack wich snacks such as veggies cut up, breakstone cottage cheese/fruit singles and light cheese sticks, just to name a few. The frozen waters serve as ice to keep the food from spoiling and then i have plenty of water to drink as it defrosts. Hope this helps.

Mike,

How AWESOME to see you here!

Glad I ran into you. I have a couple of questions for you. Ten of them as a matter of fact!

1.) Is it really worth buying the BFL book? And even if I do, should I read it?

2.) My fat calipers said I had a 10 % body fat yesterday. Today they say I have 35%. Am I doing something wrong?

3.) On my last free day I ate 4 Big Macs, 1 Large Pizza Hut pizza, 6 donuts and 4 liters of pop. Why can't I just spread them out through the week?

4.) Is the Body for Life program really "for life?"

5.) Did you ever want to "boop" Mel in the nose?

6.) I've been doing "pretty good" with my food so far but really blew it the last four days. I guess my workouts are also going "OK." The thing is, I missed the last two. Will that effect my progress?

7.) I've been doing BFL for about two weeks now. Shouldn't I have lost about 10 or 20 pounds? When will I start seeing results?

8.) Where can I get a copy of "The Benefits of Not Practicing the Universal Law of Reciprocation” ?

9.) I just saw a sale on protein and energy bars so I bought a hundred of them. I hear they're better than shakes and real food anyway, right?

And finally, my last "top ten" question for Mike Harris is:

10.) I have a LOT of weight to loose. Shouldn't I be doing lots more cardio?

:-)

See you in the Bahamas!

LOL Larry!!! I love those...although I think I've been guilty of one or two of them. HAHA I remember first starting out on BFL...it was like my 2nd or 3rd day in the gym. I was carrying around my notebook with all my workouts and this lady starts talking to me. The conversation went something like this: "OH, doing Body for Life??" So, of course, I reply "yeah, I just started this week." She says "Oh, I do that program. I've been doing it for the last 2 years!!" "AH HA..." I say as I look at her and notice she's probably in worse shape than me. "Oh, but I dont follow the eating plan....and I've 'modified' my weight workouts. OOH, and I don't do the cardio the way he says in the book." "Soooo...." I say "basically, you aren't doing Body for Life." And then I walk away.

Thread: Did the champs tweak it? (122 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by JR (1 posts) at 07:16 PM: Did the champs tweak it?
Just wondering. Did the champions do it by the book, or did they tweak the BFL program a bit? I would think in order to lose weight (especially if there is a lot of it to lose), they would almost have to tweak it and do more cardio. What do you think?

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (68 posts) at 07:24 PM:
I read on the Hussman website that some did add extra cardio, but not high intensity as that would impair recovery.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (275 posts) at 08:13 PM:
I think extra cardio is a waste of time. The success of the program is in adhering to the diet, building muscle to rev up the resting metabolic rate, and doing intense cardio for 3 days a week. Extra cardio never works for very long as far as extra weight loss is concerned. That is not to say that all the champs did it exactly as the book suggests, though many did. Some did do extra cardio, but that doesn't mean that it is advisable.

Body for Life Forum Message by eSteve (156 posts) at 08:21 PM:
Hey JR, No 2 BFL programs are the same, even if you try to follow it by the book (there are too many variables). Some champs tweaked, and some didn't. This question is very common, and sometimes can be used as an excuse for not getting the most out of your BFL program. Stick to the book - be reasonable on your free day, and be honest with yourself on your intensity levels and you can achieve incredible results. Tweaking is often done when someone is more experienced and knows their body and what they might like to tweak and why -- so just tweaking it from the start doesn't make sense until you really understand what you are doing. If you have a lot to lose, you should be motivated to know that often losing more weight quicker is possible, once you really get into the intense workouts as part of the program -- the more you have to lose, often the quicker it can be lost, and you will plateau and find it harder to lose weight the closer you get to your goal weight...at least this is my experience. So for example, if you weigh 250 pounds you may have a much easier time losing 50 pounds in a 12 week period than someone who is 200 pounds. This isn't saying that it's easier if you are heavier -- I'm only suggesting that if you have a lot of excess fat, usually by modifying your caloric intake properly and increasing your metabolism through exercise it is easier to create a caloric deficit to promote weight loss. Hey JR, I did not tweak my program once when I placed as 2nd runner up in 2003. I lost 25lbs of BF. It CAN be done just as BP layed out in the book!! Try it 100% before ever tweaking. You won't know till you try!! Shelly =)

Here is a news flash on Cardio yes it burns calories if done intensely too much it can burn through your glycogen stores and then your body starts feeding on muscle. So if you use Intense cardio a lot you run into the problem of working backwards. This is why HIIT should never be done longer than 30 min or any form of High Intense cardio. Unless you are training for a marathon.. But if your goal is to lean down with some muscle then don't even think of hitting the cardio machines at high speed for hours. Not to mention you will burn yourself out. And once your body gets used to the cardio load you are demanding upon it. It will adjust and take you twice as much as you are doing to excel even more. This is why twice a day cardio is only recommended 1 week at a time to help bust people out of a plateau and never more than that. Also many think added cardio burns up more fat. All it does is burn up calories. Cardio is great for conditioning. Conditioning the respiratory and the muscles which makes you much better at lifting. Hence giving your body a much better look, a very conditioned look. Before everyone goes what about am cardio being more fat burning. This is because you have not eaten anything and when your bodies glycogen stores are depleted your body will start to dip into fat stores because you have not eaten. I concur with eSteve on pretty much what he wrote as well.

To Tweak or not to tweak? that is the question!! It doesn't matter what you do, JUST "DO IT" and GET*HER*DONE!! and HIIT your 10's everytime!!! Linda

Thread: Think goal may be unrealistic? (87 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (68 posts) at 07:22 PM: Think goal may be unrealistic?
I decided today to calculate my lean body mass. It is 131.74 lbs. This makes me seriously doubt my goal that I had set to get to 138.5 lbs (that would make a 90 lb overall loss). If I got to that weight, and didn't lose any LBM between now and then, I would end up with only 7 lbs of fat. That doesn't seem right to me. Does anyone else think this is unhealthy or unrealistic? BTW, I am 31 years old and 5'8" tall. I have large hands and a women's size 11 shoe (9 1/2 in men's), so I would say I have a large frame. If you want to check my calculations for LBM, I am currently 217.75 lbs and 39.5% bf. Thanks in advance for any input.

Body for Life Forum Message by Two For The Show (10 posts) at 08:01 PM:
I'm not sure about that. I figured your goal weight at 138.5 and withg only 7# of fat, thats like 8% bodyfat. Stef :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by stepmorjo (89 posts) at 08:16 PM:
One thing to remember is that when you weigh more, you need more muscles to move that weight around. You will lose some muscles just because your body doesn't need them anymore.

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (68 posts) at 08:26 PM:
stepmorjo, won't I be building more muscle rather than losing it because of the BFL workouts?

Body for Life Forum Message by thudson2000 (84 posts) at 08:27 PM:
Hi! I know all bodies carry different, but I am 5'8", 32 years old. I am happy at 135,(now 140) but I only have 105lbs of LBM. I bet you will lose some of your muscle, like stepmorjo said. You might find that with your frame size you won't need to be as low as 138. Tracy

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (68 posts) at 08:35 PM:
Should I just leave the goal like it is and see how it goes?

Body for Life Forum Message by Surewinner (3 posts) at 08:49 PM:
I think that weight is a fine goal. You will lose some muscle mass, just because like steph said, you will not need it anymore. When losing weight even with all of the weight training you will not lose only fat. Another thing is shoot for that weight and when you get to a place that you feel comfortable with or hit the bodyfat % you want. You can always stop and just work on maintaining. Good luck to you!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (68 posts) at 09:09 PM:
I just looked at my own profile and realized that I have already lost some LBM in the last couple of weeks. So, I can see what you are saying. I posted the pics in my profile from the last time I lost a lot of weight. The after pic was at about 22% bf and I weighed about 150. Looking at that picture, I really could have gone down another 15 lbs so gauging by what I did in the past, I guess 138 is a reasonable goal. It sucks that I have to start all over again, but hey at least I got a beautiful little boy out of it!

I walk all the time and it doesn't seem to hurt. I manage to lose about 1-2lbs a week. I walk anywhere up to 1-3 miles. It's very relaxing if nothing else. And remember a mile is a mile whether you run or walk it.

Oh yeah Cheryl(averismommy) walked her a daughter in her stroller for an 1 hr every day. And I'm pretty sure you're familiar with her results. I say keep walking.

FAAANTASTIC IDEA!! Especially if you have a desk job!! Today I hiked and did 20 min HIIT cardio at the gym- also went shopping all day. I had to run down to the convenience store tonight and instead of driving I just walked. You know people in New York and the big cities walk all the time to get from place to place...they walk so much more than say people in California or areas where we rely soley on our own vehicles to get where we need to go. All the extra walking you can do, even 5 minutes, or even little things like parking at the farthest parking spot helps!! Good for you!!Keep up the good work and let us know if it gives you a boost!

Last Sunday was my first free day of this challenge. I ate just like every other day, except for a snack, I had 125g of special chocolate that I brought back from Germany. Other than that, the entire day was BFL style. Tomorrow will be my 2nd free day and again, I plan on eating healthy, but maybe having more chocolate as a snack. Not sure yet. I basically treat free day as any other day, but maybe throw in 1 thing extra that I normally wouldn't have during the week. It helped me all through my first Challenges back in 2002 and worked well, so will just stick to that. S.

If it makes you feel any better I know how you feel. I look at some of the profiles of the people who have lost almost 10lbs by know and I get a little aggrevated by my results. Although the scale isn't moving as much as I would like it to I have been taking my measurments and that is moving. My %bf is also moving pretty well. If I were you I'd try to concentrate less on the scale and start taking your measurments. Now if I could only take my own advice! Melissa

Don't get discouraged! I lost 7 lbs the first week but I know it was just water from eating bad and drinking over the holidays. I too have been super strick and the weight hasn't really budged since that first week. But I have been losing one inch somewhere (waist, hips, etc.) each week which keeps me going. I know I'm eating clean, no alcohol and really want this to be a lifestyle change. So I'm willing to take it off slow. I'm with you....don't get discouraged! I'm not!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (657 posts) at 08:48 AM:
All good suggestions for you here already, but one thing I don't think has been mentioned is what's on your mind. Have your set your goals clearly in your mind and do you review them every day? Are you clearly visualizing yourself as having - right now - a transformed body? In your profile background you say, "I'm fanatically in love with junk food, as well as bread, pasta, cheese, and complex carbs." Are you now saying, "I'm fanatically in love with eating clean and working out"? Your physical self will respond to your mental self...so keep thinking transformational thoughts. Maybe you are already, and if so, consider this extra encouragement!

Hi Quela, I'm a mommy of 3 as well, but no longer breastfeeding. I don't know if I have the right advice because I think you should maybe talk with your doctor, but I just remember that when your breastfeeding, you burn many calories as is, so maybe you should up them, I'm really not sure. Maybe you'll get some good advice from someone else. Anyways, I am ending week 3 and I wish you all the best. Dawn.

Hi Quela, I am a mom of 5, nursing my youngest who is 6 mths old today...I started working out when he was 1 mth old & have lost 37+ lbs since then (doing BFL the last 10 weeks)... You can nurse & lose weight...I exclusively nursed until he was 5 mths old & introduced 1 jar of fruit per day... My son is still nurses 5-8x per day upon demand... Here are some tips: *80 oz water per day a must...do not get dehydrated *you need 500 calories extra per day for nursing... *eat (if possible) all your meals with REAL food... *take your vitamins (especially calcium) daily *make it a priority to rest properly (my son still wakes up 2x per night) *find support to troubleshoot when needed Please feel free to email me if you have any other questions. Congrats! Denise

Quela, I'm a mom of two, youngest is 21 months, who gained 52 pounds with each pregnancy and breastfed for 11 months with each. I started working out at 2 weeks postpartem, walking, then went to tae bo six days a week. My husband is a pediatrician. He and a breastfeeding nurse said that calories cannot go below 1800 a day. I stuck with that, drank plenty of water, and worked out religiously. I also went to weight watchers for a while, continuing to breastfeed. They allowed extra points for that. I lost 15 in three months doing weight watchers then switched to bfl. I lost 75 in nine months. Good luck. Brandy

Good Luck. Mine kids are out of breastfeeding ages, but I did lose 30 pounds while breastfeeding the youngest. I also did it while on Weight Watchers. They allowed about 500-800 extra calories per day. I personally found that I needed to drink more water to keep my milk supply happy. Otherwise, everything else was normal. Well, I couldn't run with those big milk filled boobies, but at that point I was too heavy to be really running anyway! hee hee. Good luck. Teresa

I completed my first bfl while breastfeeding and lost 28 pounds! Check out: http://www.hussmanfitness.org/html/TPQandA.html#pregnant It has great info overall. This link talks a little about bfl and breast feeding but I swear I remember reading somewhere on the site that said to add in two extra carbs a day if you were breastfeeding. I couldn't find that info just now, but look around the site. It may be there. When you have little ones bfl is wonderful! I found it gave me control of one aspect of my life when a lot of others where a bit out of control, as things go with a house full of small children! I did find, during my challange, that I got very hungry. I didn't add the extra carbs, but I did eat full portions of efl meals for dinner (which probably did end up adding in the extra calories). And a little bfl confession: A couple of times, the night before my free day, I stayed up until midnight "cleaning and getting organized" but actually I was waiting until the stroke of midnight to begin my freeday with a couple of cookies and milk! I was hungry! Good luck! Heather

Thread: Am I under eating? (83 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by taylor76 (5 posts) at 12:14 AM: Am I under eating?
Hi, I am almost done with my 3 week of BFL. I have been lifting weights for several years so I have developed a good base of muscle mass although I have way too much fat. Currently I am following the program as directed by the BFL program. I feel that I have eaten better than I ever have before. However, I am often hungry. Is this common at the beginning of the program? Is it possible that I could be under eating due to the muscle mass I already had before I started the program? Could my hunger be due to the fact that my body is simply adjusting to smaller portions, but 6 meals a day? I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (55 posts) at 06:14 AM:
Your last statement about adjusting to smaller portion sizes/eating habits is most likely correct. As long as you follow the portion rule as set down in the book you will soon get used to it. Some people find drinking water between meals helps ease the hunger.

Body for Life Forum Message by ~Lala~ (780 posts) at 09:11 PM:
Have you tried using Fitday to see exactly how many cals you're taking in .. that might be somewhere to start.. with out knowing exactly what you're eating it's hard to say..perhaps if you posted a "average" day we could give ya a hand! Lala*

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (304 posts) at 11:03 PM:
You may be consuming too little. You are a big guy so you need more calories to maintain your lean muscle than the average joe. just make sure you are using your portion rules or go to a website to determine how many calories you should eat so you can get a ballpark figure.

Thread: 20 min cardio solution 6 days a week? (178 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Northern Belle (106 posts) at 11:28 AM:
I agree that HIIT cardio should be done no more than 3 times a week. In HIIT, you are exercising your heart, which is a muscle, so needs recovery time. Add moderate cardio to your lifting days, if you want to do some every day. Sure you have to walk/whatever for a longer time period, but after you hit the steady state, you are still using fat oxidization. Also, extra classes, such as karate, count as cardio. Beware of exhausting your body; that becomes counter-productive.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (293 posts) at 12:37 PM:
One more vote for HIIT only 3 days a week, but if you want to do cardio 3 other days, make it lower intensity and longer duration!

Body for Life Forum Message by J-P-S-524 (75 posts) at 06:41 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Shelley M. (13 posts) at 06:56 PM:
I agree that the HIIT should be done no more than 3 days a week, but if you are like me (muscle dense, but 50 pounds overweight) then you need more. What I am doing (it has worked like a charm in the past) is the HIIT the 3 days a week, then added a nice, loooooong (1-2 hours if you have the time) walk 2 or 3 other days of the week. In the morning on an empty stomach is the best time, then wait an hour before eating, then eat high protein and moderate carbs. The fat melts off this way. Good Luck
