For me, it's all about blueberries right now. I put them in my oatmeal pancakes, the yogurt protein smoothie, and just oatmeal. Otherwise, I used to take a whole wheat pita half, open it, bake it under the broiler for 5 min, top with pizza sauce, mushrooms, tomatos, and tomato-sundried turkey, fresh spinach, little ff mozz and put it under again for 5 to 10 min---yuuuummmmyy

How many people notice a considerable setback after a free day? I do not think I ate horrible on Sunday but I noticed I lost 8/10 of a pound on week 2 and gained back a pound after free day. Is it better to just rest on free day but continue to eat the EFL way?
Body for Life Forum Message by LincolnJenn (51 posts) at 09:54 AM
Most people I have talked to here have said that it is not recommended that you weigh yourself right after a free day. The bowel content and extra water alone can weigh up to 3 lbs. They say it takes about 3 days to "recover" from free day. But, they are necessary for metabolism, so that we will keep burning fat.

I agree LincolnJenn
stay away from the scale "especially after free day"
it freaks me out just thinking about what the scale would tell me the day AFTER free day.
Once a week is my rule and always on saturday morning (free day is sunday)
Body for Life Forum Message by mshaun (16 posts) at 09:57 AM
I've noticed the same thing but I don't let it get me down. At the same time though I'd rather not gain the weight back that I worked so hard to lose. Also we know you can lose a healthy 2-3 pounds a week but what is the norm for muscle. since you rest on Free Day do your muscles have better recouperation? If so how much could you say it accounts for after Free Day in respect to weight gain?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (193 posts) at 10:00 AM
There's really no such thing as a free day setback. If you put on a bit of weight, so be it. Your metabolism needs it, as has been said before.
All in all, just worry about weighing at the same time each week and at the same time of day (morning of your freeday is a good idea) and you'll see progress. Weighing mulitples of times per week will just mess with your mind ;)
Tom
Body for Life Forum Message by ThirdTry (5 posts) at 10:05 AM
Thanks for the feedback everyone, I'll stay off the scale except for the end of the week. I know what you mean about it messing with your mind, it sure depressed me this morning.
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (752 posts) at 10:15 AM
I will be up between 5-6 pounds the day after free day. At first it freaked me out, but now I know as long as I stay on track, it's all gone within three days, and I can still end up less by the next weigh in. It's mostly water fluctuation. If you are going to weigh after free day, just keep that in mind.

I think this is one of those "crossing the abyss" things that BP talks about. It took me 3 weeks on BFL before I stopped getting on the scale every few days. It made me crazy. My free day is on Saturday. By, Thursday I would be so depressed because my weight would not change...then on Saturday morning ...BOOM...weight loss. I dont know why and I dont really care! So, with 3.2 weeks of wisdom under my belt, I have stopped weighing myself everyday, stopped counting calories too! Stick with it and you will come to this point too!

for some reason i like watching the tony danza show in the morning before i get ready for work. and im watching it right now and he has jorge cruise, you know the 3 hour diet guy, and 8 min in the morning guy? anyway, hes showing off his routine from his book. how can you possibly get a full body workout from just 8 min? im going to have to try it, it went like this:
3 pushups
6 dumbell rows on each side
9 squats
and repeat until the 8 min is up. and thats it, nothing more. has anyone tried this?! im in NO way considering switching over to that from bfl, lol, but its a little strange to me that we live in a society that only 8 mins of exercise is appealing! does anyone else sense the laziness here?

Committ to 8 mins a day. Slowly you start to feel better, start to incorporate better food choices, more exercise and other things. It could happen.
Not ready to totally poo-poo it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (499 posts) at 10:15 AM
Ha! I think its impossible to call that a workout. But there is definately a market out there for "easy" workouts. People know they should workout and want to say they do, but they don't really WANT it.
Personally its a lucky day for me if I get to spend more than 45 min in the gym, and I take full advantege if that happens. And if I dont' end up sweaty and sore, it wasn't any fun!
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (499 posts) at 10:17 AM
tc..... I agree with you to a point/..if it is the "gateway exercise" for someone who doesnt workout and it encourages them to do more, then GREAT. But the idea that you can get away with that and nothing more EVER is silly....
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (132 posts) at 11:07 AM
I agree with tc that for many overweight Americans, the key is to lead them to exercise. Dispell the fear. But I'm afraid promising health and fitness with 8 minutes would leave a lot of these folks disappointed. They aren't going to look like the guy teaching this and then they may just give up. I can't imagine that BFL with just 20 - 45 minute commitment per day is too much.
Why isn't BFL getting this same press?
I honestly think the Surgeon General should be pushing it.

What do you guys do yo shock your muscles?
Muscles get addapted to what you do so its suggested that once in a while to change your routine up to "shock" them.
We decided we would do a week of 1/2 - 3/4 the weight, and twice the reps.
Well, I feel like Im getting a pretty good cardio workout, but not really pushing my muscles too much.
I want something that will make them scream the next day.
Suggestions?

Ed, Actually you can mix Betagen with juice. If your goal is to lose fat then I would recommend water but if you are someone that is trying to put on lean mass then some natural juice is acceptable. Sugar helps cary creatine to the source and even though betagen has a delivery system some would argue that more wouldn't hurt and may actually benefit. So the point is if you can spare the calories the juice is ok however it tastes fine with water. Take care
Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (232 posts) at 04:58 PM
Mixing Betagen with juice? Not a good idea. The argument can be made for mixing pure creatine with a juice to create the insulin spike necessary to absorb the creatine into the muscle, but Betagen already has maltodextrin in it, which performs primarily the same function, just without the caloric excess of a juice.
I wouldn't recommend it, especially not if you're leaning out.
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (312 posts) at 06:56 PM
My point exaclty willow, if you are "leaning out" no juice, if you are skinny and want to put 20 lbs of masson go ahead
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (288 posts) at 07:41 PM
What if you're not leaning out but not overweight? Should you just use half as much juice as you otherwise would have? I love these kinds of discussions, though they really are the birthplace of confusion!!!!

Guys,
It all boils down apporximately what your current body condition is in and what your goals are.
For me eas instructed the following:
1 scoop muscle armour 30 mins b4 workout (or 2 scoops of bg 30 mins b4 workout)
2 scoops bg + 5g l-glutamine straight after your workout
2 scoops bg + 5g l-glutamine before retiring to bed
The above are for cardio and weight training days.
When i doubt either ask Mike Harris or call eas :-)

When I did BFL before, I remember seeing a label on a tub of shake powder that advised 1 scoop of the powder for women, 1.5 for lean men, and 2 for men who were bulking-up. Now I'm using a knockoff of the Myoplex shake called My Excel (or XL?). The label calls for 2 scoops, but I'm wondering if I should be using just one. What's everyone else using, one or two scoops?

I was wondering for those who use Betagen do you use it to build muscle or minimize soreness? What exactly is the reasons or benefits of this product? I read somewhere for people to try the program without using anything else and see how the body responds, but I really have no idea if I should or shouldn't use supplements besides protein shakes. Can someone help? (I seem to naturally recover from workouts with very little soreness.)

Find out what the company does, and really know the job description. You should taylor your response to fit what they're looking for and emphasize your previous experiences that you think would be relevant.
By the way, my current job is also a TW for a pharmaceutical company dealing mostly with new product submissions. Just started last year. My background is in engineering/biochemistry so this is a new field for me.
Good luck!

The expectation is to liase between clients and engineers to ensure they're on the same page.
Enphasize your ability to take technical words and explain them in laymans terms. Go to Google or Yahoo and search for interview questions, and try to find questions for the type of position you are looking for. Just be yourself, and describe what strengths you can bring to the job.
Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (678 posts) at 10:29 AM
Learn as much about the company and its positioning as possible. Find ways in your interview to refer to your knowledge about them. (Just as people like to hear themselves spoken of in a complimentary way, they usually also have the same feelings about their company since it's an extension of their identity.)
Think up a couple of ideas of your own about how you would accomplish what they need and offer them in the interview. (Even if they've already been there, tried that, and moved on, they will appreciate that you gave it some creative thought.)
As much as you might want the job now, remember that this is a two-way street. Be sure that you interview THEM too. Ask about corporate culture. Find out what it takes to really succeed there. Ask them to describe the best characteristics and greatest weaknesses of the CEO (since these have - in most places I've worked - defined the culture). See what you can learn about advancement opportunities.
And when you have the job, your photography business should be a good conversation topic when things get dry! I think people are always interested to know the PERSON behind the person to whom their speaking, and you've got a unique skill to share when the right opportunity comes up.
Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (232 posts) at 10:33 AM
A couple of things which I think are more important than trying to speculate what kinds of questions you are going to be asked:
1) This is a schmoozing job. First and foremost they are going to want to see how comfortable you are - and how comfortable you make everyone else - in a potentially uncomfortable situation. Be yourself, relax and engage them in a friendly, confident, professional manner throughout the entire course of the interview, and you're far ahead of the game.
2) Why do you want this job in the first place? You've been a technical writer for 7 years and have told us you don't want to do that, but that doens't say anything about why you DO want this job?
3) When you're clear on that, why do you think you'd be good for it? You do want to sell yourself, but be perfectly frank. Don't spin your experience so much that it becomes questionable. If you are asked a question about what you'd do in a situation you honestly haven't found yourself in, say so. Then think for a minute and explain what you would do.
I guess just be comfortable is my advice. That's what helped me get the new job I just was offered last week, which has a lot of the same elements you describe in this job. They want to see how you act as much as they care about what you say. Don't spend TOO much time trying to anticipate questions, but be totally present so you can respond to them in a powerful way.
And finally, don't put so much into this that it makes you nervous. Remember you have a job now and are fine. If you don't get it, realize that there are other fine opportunities just waiting for you. That will help boost your confidence.
Good luck!!

I have two dogs and I use the Petsafe bark-collars.
It works great for my Beagle, she knows that if I put it on her, she is not supposed to bark. I dont even have to have a battery in it.
It doesnt work for my Chocolate Lab/German Shorhair mix. He just barks right through the shock. He has also learned how to shake hard enough to get the collar away from his voice box.
Try one, it will probably work. Spend good money on it and NEVER leave it on your dog for more than 8 hours or so. Dogs gotta bark and they need that freedom sometimes.
Good luck,
JEnn
Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (151 posts) at 03:56 PM
We have two bird dogs, I don't know about the dog that barks at birds, because bird dogs are trained to not bark, but to sneak up on them. We use the shock collars for training, because in our case the dogs are trained to do a field pattern and sometimes they get so busy "hunting" that they leave town!
The shock collar we use can be set to different levels, each dog is different. We use ours as a tool for correction, they learn very quickly. Usually only takes a time or two, at least with the German shorthairs, a little longer with our chesapeake!
I don't know about the barking collar, I am assuming it works the same, except that their barking sets it off rather than you. Is there one you can borrow? we always lend ours out. Its a good way to test it before you shell out the money. We actually use the "dummy" collar most of the time, they aren't smart enough to know that the real collar isn't on, and they stay pretty alert to our request!
Body for Life Forum Message by Not tryin' to scare folks! (149 posts) at 04:49 PM
I have to work the drug dog I have now with a bark/shock collar on. He gets SO excited that he barks. The collar is really effective, but a smart dog can easily get "collar wise" and know when it's on and when it's of.
Body for Life Forum Message by bethkk (261 posts) at 04:53 PM
The shock collar didn't work very well for us (our dog is a black lab/border collie mix). What HAS worked for us is the box that emits an obnoxious noise when the dog barks. You can set the one we have to audible or inaudible. We use the audible because, believe it or not, the inaudible sound my son and husband can actually hear and it hurts their ears!! LOL! Anyway, our dog never barks now unless she figures out we've unplugged it!
Body for Life Forum Message by Gtnskinee (43 posts) at 05:52 PM
I have an Airdale and he barked at everything. The shock collar was an answer to prayer. He never barks if he has it on, but he will if I take it off. It only took two shocks to teach him.
Body for Life Forum Message by Gtnskinee (43 posts) at 05:55 PM
I forgot to mention that if the dog is thick or heavy coated, you have to make sure the collar is tight enough and the contacts on the collar are up against the dogs throat. It is ineffective if it is blocked by hair.

This may sound silly, but I think there needs to be some sort of "prize" for the winning team. whether it be material or whatever. I think this might keep people on track, and not fall apart after the 1st or 2nd week. Just my .02 LOL.
Any thoughts?

I'm out for February only because my challenge ends Feb 4 and I am going to challenge myself in another way. I am going to eat CLEAN for the whole month of Feb! It's only 28 days, how hard can it be? No cheats and more cardio is what I'm going to try for a month. I think then I'll come back to BFL for another challenge.
Good luck to everyone though!

A mini challenge is a team challenge where the teams get points for eating clean, drinking water, exercising, weight loss and BF% loss. It's an extra motivational tool.

Hey gang,
I started EMT school last week. I'm looking for suggestions on study aids. The text book is pretty intense and I'm trying to find other educational materials that can help me learn anatomy. I learn well from flashcards. Anyone know of other study tools?
Any suggestions are great!
Thanks,
Danielle
Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (88 posts) at 10:02 AM
I'm not an EMT, but I've taken many graduate level chemistry & biology courses.
Flashcards work for me too. Usually by the time I've written down the materials on the flashcard, I already know a lot of the stuff that's going to be on the exam.
Another thing that helps me is to repeatedly writing the things I need to know on paper or notebook.
Good luck!

GIIIIIIIIIIRL!!!!!!! I didn't know you were gonna do EMT!!! Schweet!
How in depth do you need to know the A&P? Is this an EMT-B class?
Sometimes the texts will have a CD rom that comes with it or a website for extra work. I have seen anatomy coloring books in regular bookstores, but that might go too in depth for what you need. What helped me in A&P class was making my own flashcards. That helps you learn on various levels. (you have to know what it is so you can draw it, then the act of drawing is another way to help remember, labeling, etc.) Some other students made black and white copies of the pictures and reduced them, then pasted them on 3x5 cards. I used different colored ink/pencils for different parts of the same structure (ie, visceral and parietal plerua. visceral layer would be one color, parietal would be another) You can do the same thing with the copies if they are b/w, just color in the portion you want to identify on the back.
I JUST finished the EMT-B portion of my paramedic program. Let me know if I can help ya out!
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (288 posts) at 02:50 PM
Maybe just watching several episodes of CSI will help. Or old reruns of Emergency, where they contacted Rampart Hospital by a field phone and were always told to start an IV and transport as soon as possible, by Dr. Early or Dr. Brackett. Those were real paramedics back then, and they didn't need any stinkin' anatomy flash cards!
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1042 posts) at 03:28 PM
Yes, it is the EMT B class. I will certainly look into coloring books and such. I have to know all the bones, arteries, passageway of air and blood thorough the body...
I already have flashcards going. Just didn't know if there were any other study guides.
I announced at work today that I could take Blood Pressures and I've had 5 patients today already!

OOPS!! I hit the buuton too fast.
I'm an EMT-B instructor. I have been an EMT for 12 years. I used to teach the 6 week course at my last base. My studenta had to take the National Registry test and I only had a couple fail. Majority of my students passed in the 80's. National standard is a 71. Here's the secret.....
It does not matter what text book you have. The National Registry test is created from the D.O.T standards. You need to go the the Department of Transportation website and plug in EMT-B. Download the EMT-B Standards and study from this. Believe it or not some EMT books do not teach the D.O.T standards. What book are you using? Let me know if you need any more info.

Anyone familiar with Dyslexia?
I know I can do a google search and find plenty of information...which I plan on doing.
My 4 year old is learning how to write, recognize letters, how they sound, and so forth. He knows how to right his first and last name and does a pretty good job at both. But occasionaly he will write it from right to left...complete with the letters backwards so that if you hold it to a mirror it would be correct.
The teachers at daycare just think this is a "normal" thing with his age.....but said no one else in class is doing it. Apperently he is one of the few that can even write his name, yet alone write it perfectly backwards. This is a daycare, not a school. The "teachers" in the classrooms have some knowledge about daycares and are required to take continuing education for this age group, but none of "certified teachers" so I take most things they say with a grain of salt when it comes to education and learning. Many people can manage a room full of youngsters and "teach" them the alphabet. I am glad he is learning SOMETHING while there, but after they teach the basics, I don't think this facility is really meant to HELP a child with any kind of special problems or anything over the basics.
That said.....is this even a "problem" or something I should be really concerned with?
When I point out he has written it backwards, he can write it the correct way. However given the chance to do his own thing, it will always be written backwards.
Anyone familar with this age group? or have educational knowledge about dyslexia and when to identify it?
Thanks
Teresa

I can not say for sure .....I teach art so I am in the K4 classroom once a week and I have found this very common with the students. I think it is still part of the learning process. I don't think I would be to worried yet. I actually find it more surprising that nobody else in the class does this. Sorry I don't have any technical info to give you more just my opinion (and I don't have kids) Good Luck!
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (815 posts) at 06:39 PM
I was more surprise more children aren't writing their names. Granted his name is Ben and that is easy, but most of the kids names are on the shorter side. And he can spell Benjamin, but we hardly ever call him that.
The woman that is with the kids for after school care says some of them do it, but offered no assistance in monitoring Ben for possible help.
Ben is my oldest and so everything that he experiences is new to me. Yes...still have first mother syndrome with "new things". ;)
I did research a little on google and found that the ONLY symptom I see in preschoolers that Ben is displaying right now is the mirror writing.

I know you got your "chill pill", but just to put in my 2 cents worth...I will be certified to teach 4-8th grade this May so my background definitely isn't with the little guys. However, from what little I have learned about dyslexia I would wait until he is in kindergarden and is actually learning how to write and read and then connect the two. I have a little 5 year old in my family and she does very similar things as to what you are describing...I sometimes think she is just experimenting, because like you said he can do it the correct way. (and she can too)

Hey tcstone,
I help with testing for characteristics of dyslexia at my school. I also have a special education 1st grader of my own. We do not ever say a child has characteristics of dyslexia until they show up in 2nd grade. Most children have many dyslexic characteristics even throughout 1st grade. That is perfectly normal. I would keep an eye on him from the beginning of 2nd grade until 1/2 way through 2nd grade, if the characteristics are still strong at that point, please ask your school to do a test or send you to someone who can. Schools cannot say your child has or doesn't have dyslexia - but they can tell you how many characteristics they have.
I know that this is long winded - sorry- pm me if you have any other questions. I would love to help as much as possible.
Body for Life Forum Message by waylalynne (6 posts) at 10:54 PM
I have dyslexia and so does one of my children. It is an auditory processing disorder that can make it difficult to read and write. It is normal for 3-5 five year olds to write letters and some numbers backward. I am also a special education teacher in the public school system and I am graduating with my Master's in SPED in three months so I am comfortable writing and talking about this........Dyslexia is genetic. You or your children's father must have it in order for your children to have it. If only one of you has it your child has a 50% chance of getting it. It's very managable and varies in severity. There are many views on dyslexia. A site that I've found to be reputable, that uses the National Institute of Health studies is brightsolutions dot us. Any questions you have can be found there. As a teacher, I've found most children are able to write their name by the end of kindergatren or sooner. If a student can't, it doesn't mean there is a probelm but could be an indicator that needs further attnetion. Not all kids walk by their first birthday:) Dyslexia has NOTHING to do with intelligence or lack of trying. Anyway, please check out the website I mentioned. It's very informative and research based-something a lot of the info floating around these days is not.
Have a great night! Lynne

I had a choice to either go to the Ukraine or Dominican Republic. I just feel they are so much needier down there. Any input?

I went on a short term mission trip there in the 90's. I doubt things have changed much. We were in Azua, which is a medium sized town on the south part of the island, almost on the sea shore. We helped to build a church/school. The people are NOT NEEDY in the sense that we think of people who are oppressed or disease ridden or whatever. They don't have much, but they are a happy, spiritual and community-minded people who welcome visitors and are very hospitable to them. You'll be more blessed by them than even they will be by you! I think we went in June or July and it was quite hot all the time. BTW, there ARE tarantulas around the area, so if you're doing any digging or clearing of debris be sure to keep an eye out for them. They're totally harmless, but a little creepy! We flew into San Juan Puerto Rico and from there in to Santo Domingo Dominican Republic and then van pooled to Azua.

Wow Mike, I never thought about the snakes and tarantulas! I am sure that you're right about my being more blessed by them. Everyone that has gone in the past says the same thing. A nurse friend of mine went last year. She said she thought she was going down to help them but she brought much more back than what she took down. She said it was such a blessing, she's going again this year.

Any suggestions with the soreness? Really thinking about Betagen, but I am VERY hesistant and skeptical b/c it contains creatine. Any wisdom/advice much appreciated please.
Thanks.

When I first experienced serious soreness in my muscles - my first week - I went into active recovery, meaning the next time I worked on that same muscle group I reduced the weights by 50% and did the complete routine but not to failure. Two major benefits of that - I didn't skip that day and I didn't feel as sore the next time. Anyway, the muscles just need a little help to clear away the lactic acid and get back to full movement.
Oh, and Sarah, I'm not sure why you're not interested in taking creatine. Betagen has been great for a lot of folks - go through the forums and search for "Betagen" and you'll find lots of conversation and advice about it. As for me, I take it twice a day and it helps me in two ways - I don't feel as sore after an intense workout and I move up in my weights more rapidly. Even if that's all in my head, it's worth the price!

I blew my knee out playing football. It had to be reconstructed. While I was rehabbing the trainers always told me never to do full squats (butt to your heels). Even after I was completely rehabbed my surgeon told me never to do full squats again. I was told that going that low was an unnatural movement for the knees. My surgeon said full squats were terrible even for someone with two good knees. The trainers also told me that there was no real advantage to training full squats when trying to develop power and muscle mass.
I suggest to people who are trying to get used to going parallel to do split squats which are awesome for quads . Split squats are just like a lunge except done with a barbell so you are able use more weight. I also find it is easier to keep your back straight and keep better balance when using a bar. It forces you to go parallel and eventually you can translate that motion into parallel squats.
I also learned that any motion in which the elbow goes above the shoulder should be avoided because it is unnatural as well. I still do military press anyway.

don't forget, that your gym also will have a/c on, or at least no heat, so your house will be warmer and you'll sweat more.
Also, while I don't know the 'Firm' workouts, my guess is that you're reaching muscle fatigue through repetition and not neccessarily through max. weight lifted. Both will get your legs shaky and tired, the weights will help you build muscle faster.
It sounds like you've found a great 'back-up' for when you can't get to the gym, but my hunch is that you'll see more improvements when you're at the gym lifting those ever-increasing weights!
Good for your for sticking to the program despite not being able to get to the gym!

Are you taking any over the counter drugs for it? Many people don’t realize it but ibuprofen works great for just that situation. I often take some before and after my lower body workouts to keep my knees from hurting the next day. Try 200-400mg every 6 hours. Try it for 3 or 4 days and don’t exceed 3200 mg a day. You might be surprised just how much better you feel. Ice works great too but I am assuming you have already tried that.

It's funny, I just got back from my dr and he told me the same thing, except I have it in my ankles. Too much running and not enough resting in between! I have to take 2 - 3 weeks off from all cardio and lbwo. I am going to go nuts! He did also say to take 600mg of ibuprofen, not for the pain, but for the swelling or whatever it is that tendons do. Talk about fustrating!

I've had the same problem on and off. You might try wearing a wrist brace to remind yourself to let it rest (even when it starts to feel better) Using it before it's totally healed can damage it again.

In an effort to speed-up my UBW, I'm doing tricep dips for my tricep workout. Since it's consistently just lifting my body weight, there is no gradual increase of intensity by changing the weight as there would be if I was do, say, tricep extensions. Do you think that's ok???
The only thought I have is that the intensity does increase because of the repeated sets.
Body for Life Forum Message by crone (644 posts) at 07:22 AM
I would do the tricep extensions with the weight and the then do the dips for the last 12 set.
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (815 posts) at 07:46 AM
I do the dips for my last set. You can adjust how much you are lifting by using your legs!
But, to be sure you are just lifting YOUR body weight, you have to concentrate.
I personally don't see a problem. My tricep extension are with relatively light weights (up to 15lbs) and then I dip my body weight. That IS an increase in intensity.
I think for the last set, you are looking for muscle failure to reach your 10!
Works for me.
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (543 posts) at 08:45 AM
You can also increase your dip workout by using the pullup machine and adjust your weights accordingly. If not using the machine you can also adjust your intensity by the position of your feet. Bent knees are easiest, extended legs w/ankles crossed is the next level, your feet elevated on a bench is third and finally, your feet elevated on a bench w/a weight plate on your legs.
Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (90 posts) at 08:55 AM
I do tricep dips also... But thankfully my gym set has a pull-up/dip weighted assist. So, I can actually do all my levels.

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (86 posts) at 09:03 AM
Doing the reps more slowly on subsequent sets will also increase the intensity. Trust me!
Body for Life Forum Message by biffler (239 posts) at 05:07 PM
I do the tricep dip on a bench, legs extended up on another bench.
For extra oomph, I place a weight plate on top of my thighs (anywhere from 25 - 45lbs). I usually never have a problem with the plate moving at all.

I was just looking at a book in my mother's basement that I gave her back in the early 80's. It's called "Now or Never" by Joyce Vedral. It has ALL the principls of BFL. The only thing that was different then was they were recommending a larger amount of carbs. So, BFL is not a new concept and yes, it's all been written before, HOWEVER... BFL is the only one that became mainstream. I mean, how many people have ever even heard of Joyce Vedral? She even has before/after pictures in the book.
I love BFL and am thanful that Bill Phillips wrote it! It's my go-to source as is the guestbook and the tracker. Just wanted you to know that I'm not bashing BFL AT ALL! :)

I feel so bad for people who grasp at Gastric Bypass Surgery as their last or only hope and then they still find that the only true way to be healthy is to follow good eating principles and exercise! But, we all know that.

You know, Americans seem to follow these patterns...they will wait until some famous person (Jane Fonda, Suzanne Somers, etc etc) makes a committment to fitness, then they want to get on the bandwagon, too. We're a passive country full of people waiting to see what the herd does. Then, they get inspired, so we get all pumped with enthusiasm to get on this "New Improved Diet"...or try this or that "new idea"...
A friend and I were talking about BFL the other day and we pretty much agreed that what we respected about it was the fact that Bill Phillips never promised people something for nothing. He told them the journey to a body they could love to live in involved discipline, committment, and dedication.
I wish Mr. Roker the best, but I would caution anybody who sees these things on TV needs to remember the word "trainer"...this guy probably has access to a good trainer and workout area..more power to him if he does, but people seem to think, "Well, all I've got to do is just eat differently or do this or that or take this or that. I can get it on my own, doing it my own way."
I am really new to this whole fitness game. I have a lot to learn, but I do know that there's no surgery, no pill, no "magic bullet"...including gastric bypass surgery...

Eve, I started on Dec. 8th too, and I'm in my eighth week right there with ya! I had the same fears as you, but just today I weighed in and found that I had lost a few (3 lbs to be exact) since Saturday! I also agree with everyone esle's posts- you do NOT look "bulky". Whatever! You look great! I'll get my photos posted soon and they should make you feel a little better. ;) I figure I've already lost 18 lbs. so if I don't get down to a size 6 at the end of the challenge then I'll start up the next one! It's for LIFE, right? You'll get there and wow- won't it be great when we finish?!

Everyone here gave great advice! You're ding well. I just looked at your profile, can't tell much in the front but I think that's because I can;t look at them side by side, but I see a big difference on your back shots. It is happening for you.
And as for "bulky", if she means muscular, which I am gueesing she is because she said to stop lifting, from a guy's stand point, mine at least, that is a good thing!

YES, DON"' QUIT!!! I had a really bad week myself. It was week #8 and I have hit a plateau. Working my butt off and didn't see any change on the scales or body fat index. My mind just started sending all those " why am I doing this?" messages. I regrouped and know that this program works. Don't get discouraged. It may take awhile and you won't always be perfect, but work at it a little at a time. It will get better!!!

I hate to see anyone leave. I have been struggling. I have been at the same lousy weight for 14 weeks, but I know that I have lost BF because my clothes are feeling different. I feel better at (almost) 37 than I did when I was 25. I was dancing around the house saying man I can't remember the last time I could just walking around and something on my body just not hurting. Just that feeling alone has kept me on the path. Screw the scale. I don't want anyone to drop out of this game called BFL. I will win.

It's so surprising to be reading these posts...I was just driving home last night, reflecting on how it seems like every time things started to go my way in life I would do something to destroy it. I got a little concerned, too, and started thinking, "Things have been going a little too good with this BFL and all, better health and all that. Wonder what I'm gonna do to mess it up NOW? Get down on myself again and give up when I get angry?" But then I started thinking like the new me again...
These boards and this life is like being part of a big family...and like it or not, you can't just "drop out of a family'.
Steve posted about BFL being a body for YOUR life. I think that's something I should always keep in mind. This body is going to be my real home for the rest of the time I'm here, regardless of where I live. I set about, from the very beginning, to make these challenges all about the long haul. Those breathtaking transformations you see on the website and in the BFL books are wonderful to see and I applaud those people but I'm not thinking, "Gee, I've gotta change that much or I'm a failure"..
About dropping out of things....who wins when I do that? What does it really improve? The guys at work don't need me to be the grouch I was just a few weeks ago, bitter about life and not taking care of me. My health doesn't need me to give up. The only thing that improves when I give up is the scar tissue inside my thinking and those powerful messages I got as a kid that said, "You can't." I can't? Says who?
I can't imagine leaving this board or this way of life. Both are too wonderful. I'm like Crone: I don't want anyone to drop out, either.
I just remember what I got told years ago (and it still makes sense): It's not how many times that you fall that counts in life. It's how many times you get up.

I hate to see anyone quit, cause the only person that loses when you quit is you.
Don't worry about your team, they are their for your support and it sounds like you have a great Team Captain.
This program won't work until you decide the only person you're doing this for is you - now is the time to be selfish. When you improve yourself everything else in your life benefits. We all know someone who's unhappy with themselves and after a while that person has the ability to bring you down too. But postive, happy people only make you want to be more like them.
I myself just started back this week after being diagnosed with pneumonia earlier this month. As I discovered all too clearly this morning, I ain't picking up where I left off either. But I'm determined and I am going to make the biggest changes that I can. And I, for one, am determined to be an After picture in my life and not a Before.
Falling on your face is still moving forward and like David said - it's the picking yourself back up that's important.

My diet is good, my workouts are good...I'm not hitting my HIIT probably as hard as I can sometimes, but I'm generally I'm about 95% there. My clothes are fitting better, and my measurements have dropped (I've lost about an inch and a quarter off my waist), my BFP has gone down a bit. I was just really looking forward to seeing a couple more pounds off the scale. Sigh...guess I'll have to wait. Thanks for the tip Edward, I didn't know that.

Robin-you are looking great! I think that you should aim for your 15% BF goal and forget the scale weight. I know that is going to be hard to do mentally but just look at all the proof out there!-Your dress size will go down! You will be smaller! Trust the process girlie!

Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (88 posts) at 09:52 AM
Don't put too much emphasis on the scale. You should go by your body fat % and how your clothes fit.
I was just complemented by a co-worker this morning that I looked skinny (in a good way, not the anorexic kind). She was shocked when I told her how much I weighed because I look like I should weigh a lot less. But because I've been working out hard and consistent for weeks now, I have built up some muscles which takes up less space than fat.
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (752 posts) at 10:28 AM
I agree that you are gaining muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat, but takes up less room as someone else here stated. I noticed that you are 5'4 with a goal weight of 110. Your body may not like that! 110 is pretty light for your height, and in order to get there you will have to lose muscle. I agree with Chantal, that you should think about setting a BF% goal instead of weight. Think of it this way...would you rather be 120lbs at 14%BF and wearing a size 2? Or 110 pounds, 19%BF and a size 8? It's all in your personal goals.
As far as you gaining a pound or two and knowing now that it is muscle, are you still ok with that?
Jennifer

When I read through the website it seems like MOST people that used it was because they were having issues to start with.

What does he say about mucoid Plaque bluidup? ( the inlining part of the intestines.
I read it takes months to thin it out again, the build up takes time for the cleansing to keick in.
Just curious what you guys have expereinced.

Okay, I did try it. I took the parasite cleanse pills, drank the senna tea (aka "poop" tea), and drank the colonix fiber stuff in OJ every morning for, I think it was three months. Every day there were new surprises. A few times I saw what looked like rice. Turns out they were worms from my cats!!! I also saw what I identified later as an intestinal fluke. I didn't have the mucoid plaques, but I did go three or four times a day in fairly significant amounts. It was worth it, in my opinion. I even wrote about it on my blog...http://fitness-loving-chica.tripod.com/blog/index.blog?entry_id=496280

Just wondering if there is any medical research and backing on the whole colon cleansing.
IE. would human beings go through this process naturally? Is this something that needs to be done because of the manufactured/processed foods we eat. While this would not be necessary in the past.
I like to know the science behind everything.

ok, for those using drnatura or any other colon cleanse product - i'm curious...how many times a day, do you, uhhh...make it to the bathroom?? and is this something one should try while home from work for a week or so...or is it more a long-term process?? Is the actual "act" of cleansing a process one should do in private - say at home, or would this be ok for those that work in a public place and a private restroom may not be available??? I'm so tempted but need more real-life testomonials!!
Thanks for sharing such personal and intimate details...where else could one ask such questions???

This topic keeps coming up...and every time I'm both grossed out and intrigued. But I gotta tell you - I'm TIRED of being constipated. I figured in the 2nd week it was because of the change of diet. Now, I'm just frustrated and a bit concerned. I'd love to take some action, but this Dr. Natura stuff still seems a bit odd to me.
I don't want to read any more testimonials on that website. Please post yours here - if you have 'em! Obviously, there are lots of people who are interested to know.

From what I was told by a friend that is into herbal medicine is that colon cleansing is somthing you would want to do on a weekend when you are near a bathroom. Because as he stated from his personal experiance that when what ever herbs you take kick in there is no stopping it.
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (815 posts) at 09:44 PM
I got a nice PM from someone taking the Colonix on the Dr. Natura site and she DID NOT have the run the bathroom problems. Normal feelings for BM's....just more frequency and more ick coming out.
From all of the testimonials I read on the site, no one stayed home for 3 months while on the product (which is the recommended dose, but you buy it one month at a time).
If you prefer only poo'ing in the comfort of your own home, then you may have issues. I don't care where I am if nature calls, I will find a potty and use it. So I guess it is personal preference.
When taxes come in, I will be splurgin on colon cleansing. Whoo-hoo!! Wild and crazy here!
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (815 posts) at 09:45 PM

ok, i have gotten sooo many pm's about drnatura.com and the colonix pack so im just going to post it on here. its a natural thing and we are all adults. lol
i started about 1.5 weeks ago and on day 2 i noticed what they call "plaque" in my bm. the number of times i go each day has increased as well as the amount. i had no issues with my bm's before but was curios to try one of these programs.
i have had no discomfort, no running to the bathroom, which is why they say you can use it for up to 3 months, its super gentle, no bloating, no gas, my stomach looks flatter, my acne is clearing up.
in additon to bfl this is working great for me. as for what is happening, well. i have had some things that look simliar to whats on the photos on the website, but not as much yet, it says that it may take a few weeks for that sort of stuff to come out. and some questionable rice and sesame seed looking things when ive had neither recently. so its definitly working on getting all the old, well, crap out of my system.
ive tried similar products from health food stores that havent produced this result and that have made me have to stay close to the bathroom at all times, but this program is different somehow.and its working better!! for those of you who question why someone should be doing this, the simple way of saying it is, look at our sad american diets. we eat so much junk that our bodies arent used to or cant process and it just builds up. like it says on the site "life and death begin and end in the colon" conventional doctors dont reccomend this sort of treatment because it goes against what most practice, not the prevention of disease, just the treatment. personally i think its a great combo to do with bfl, it REALLY gets the crap out of your system, after seeing some of the things that i have i dont want to eat junk food anymore! and honestly i just want all of that junk out of my intestines!
but seriously, i like it, my husband likes it, my mom is buying it. i know its not cheap, but theres some sellers on ebay that sell it at a discount, but who knows if its old, used, etc. but anyway, if anyone has anymore questions let me know. i think its funny that my longest post here on tracker is about poop!

oh and i forgot to mention, that out of all the many fiber i have taken, theres is the abolsute best, it disolves easy, tastes a little like bananas, the tea is just like a nice herbal tea, and the paranil, is gel caps so they are easy to take as well. ive had some fiber that has literally made me vomit after taking it because the texture and taste were so awful, but i can actually stomach this one.

um I am not too sure about this one...
****slows down metabolism (YES< THIS IS A GOOD THING!!!)A SLOWER METABOLISM HAS SHOWN TO PROLONG LIFE :) ***
If you trying to lose fat and build muscle that is the opposite of your goals, you want your body to be a fat buring machine, which means you are going to SPEED up your matabolism...
I wonder if they include active lifestyles in that study?
Just curious...

If this study proves positive then there will of course be some idiots out there that'll take it to extremes and restrict thier calories to like 300 a day or something stupid like that though. I'll guarantee it.

Yeah, Slower metabolism does prolong life.
Its called Basal metabolism:
which is the minimum amount of enery required to maintain vital functions in an organism at complete rest.
The greater an organisms rate of oxygen Basal metabolism, the shorter its life span.
As we age, our cells work harder. Mroe free radicals, etc.
its a little completeing, but once you research it a bit, you wil understnad.
but that the basics about basal metabolism
this process is slow, but increases with time.

Actually, a quick search of Caloric Restriction Prolong Life on google reveals pretty extensive research on this topic, but also that it seems to be debated.
By the way, eating clean the BFL way is caloric restriction, relatively speaking. Most people who eat the standard diet of an advanced industrialized society eat far more calories in a day than BFL'ers.

right, this is why i posted the information. I was relating it to the positive effects to BFL prgram.
we already are ont he caloric restrictions!!!
Glad to hear it. Yes, it seems to have some debates;
my point i guess, its something we can conrol ourselves when it comes to health.
FOOD!! This study is pretty stong though.
try Tufts univer.. the school is out of Boston and the study is really amazing stuff. becareful where your pulling your research on goggle; it gets to be all over the place.
its a great outcome though, if this will work on humans!!1

Be careful!
I just spent a few hours on another board dealing with this exact topic!
I've been around 1200-1300 calories a day (except freeday then 1600-1800), for about 4 weeks.
I have been graciously corrected to where I should be targeting no lower than 1550 for my hieght/weight/age etc... Below that and I will be losing muscle as well as fat. And if the math is right:
300 cals / day * 25 days = 2.5 lbs or thereabouts.
Almost exactly the amount of muscle that I have lost!

Well, it doesn't matter now. I went to the job this morning and they tried to reassign me to the production line which would have meant 12 hour shifts. I explained that I have to be at school by six and they said they'd keep me in mind if something came up in the future. It sucks that I drove all the way out there for nothing, but at least I can go do my workout now!
Body for Life Forum Message by ~Lala~ (790 posts) at 12:22 AM
I'm sure having done this before that this isn't new news... but getting on the scale after free day is a BAD idea -- it does nasty things to our psyche!
~Lol~
I understand that it's hard to keep it toned down- but that's part of what free days is for right?..your body will startt telling you in a few weeks if too much is too much..but come visit Us if you want on your free day ;)
Body for Life Forum Message by ray59 (38 posts) at 04:33 AM
Now there ya go,get online and talk to my fellow bfl'ers who are trying the same. definitely gonna try that Lala. How are you doin in your bfl?
Body for Life Forum Message by alvindsv (137 posts) at 04:45 AM
Lala is correct about your body talking to you. I can remember waking up on a Monday after a REALLY free day one time, and feeling like total you know what. Instantly I said that I am going to tone down the free days. I still feel a little lethargic, but not nearly as bad. I think that's the one of the beautys of free day. It sometimes can remind of us of the pain we use to constantly live with.
Body for Life Forum Message by wumpus (10 posts) at 05:25 AM
A lot of this weight is going to be water. You've been controlling your intake for 6 days, and all of a sudden here's a load of carbs... your muscles are going to store it as glycogen. When you store 1 molecule of glycogen, you add in 3 of water.
2 days later, you will lose the water, and have a nice scale drop.
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (59 posts) at 06:13 AM
What wumpus says is bang on, weigh at the end of the week before your free day from now on, and use that to measure your progress. You're doing more harm than good weighing after your free day.
Body for Life Forum Message by p_ano_man (6 posts) at 06:15 AM
I weighed the morning of my free day which would seem to be the best time and I had not lost anything from the prior week. Then, I weight two days later and showed a 3.5 pound loss. This is why I don't like weighing every week, it is so deceiving. I think I'll start weighing every three weeks so I will see a good change.

Ray, it appears that we share a common gene… the ‘make the fridge be empty on a free day’ gene. I can eat all the pizza in our nearby pizza joint. Call them… they’ll tell you.
I also read your thread concerning Porter and the combination of these two threads made me toss in my two cents.
So, in an effort to drop all the weight I gained over the holidays and the fact that I want to be trim on the BFL Cruise, I am not permitting myself to ‘enjoy’ a free day or partake in any alcohol for this first challenge. I concluded that combining a free day with my weakness for pizza and Chinese Buffet would set me too far back in my goals for this challenge. As of today (Week 4 Day 2) I do not feel deprived in any way. Whenever I feel like ‘cheating’ or enjoying my free day I simply grab my goals and reread them. I also have my BFL bracelet that I wear to remind myself to be strong.
What’s my point? You have total control over yourself so remain focused upon your goals and ensure that your actions stay aligned with your goals. If eating the whole fridge is not in line with your goals, don’t do it. Good luck and keep up the great work! TJ

Free Day 2 Cent worth: I don't take a whole free day, nor 'usually' do I do even a full free meal. I'm a chocaholic. Not to eat a piece of chocolate is devastating to a chocaholic. So, on my free day, I have a very small bag (125g)of some chocolates I brought back from Germany. That's my cheat. It probably has 500 calories and 40 g of fat, but thats enough for me to keep me good for the rest of the week. Not sure if that's the right thing to do, but it's working for me!
Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!!

On my very first free day, I ate pancakes, bacon, barbeque, and lots of other stuff I'd been craving all week but wouldn't let myself have. I did all that, then ended up the next morning with what I call a "food hangover"...honestly, I thought I'd come down with food poisoning or something.
This last weekend, I played it smart. I only took one meal to be "free" during that day. The rest of my meals I sort of ate clean. That seemed to work better for me....didn't feel bad at all.
Body for Life Forum Message by ray59 (38 posts) at 02:34 PM
I'm going to try to start modifying the free day a little.I wont work out,but I'm gonna try harder to stick to the meal plan more. Probably do the 1 free meal a week thing, and try to keep that reasonable
Body for Life Forum Message by WorkInProgress (193 posts) at 03:14 PM
you're not the only one who feels like crap and wonders why they're doing this on the day after a free day! We all feel bloated and a little dis-heartened, but that's what we used to feel like all the time, remember?!
I've switched my 'free-day' to mid-week, instead of the weekend. I found that on the weekend I would really go nuts and eat pratically everything I could get my hands on. Now with a mid-week free day I have to have more control because I'm at work and my days are more structured. So, I'm pretty good during the day, and a just a little nuts at night, but feeling not as bad the next morning.
And, no, I would never EVER weigh myself within the first couple of days after a free day!!
Body for Life Forum Message by alvindsv (137 posts) at 04:38 AM
The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion. That's what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they'll go through the pain no matter what happens.

I decided to reread my bfl book from the first page, even though I often refer to the excercise pages. The reality of Porter losing 54 lbs. in 12 weeks is pretty dramatic, and even more so to me now that I'm trying to follow the same program.Lets be honest, you have to really work out hard and eat really lite to lose that much weight in so short a time.I cant imagine that he went to burgerking on his free day and inhaled a couple of whoppers and some fries.
Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (390 posts) at 04:51 AM
I don't think Porter took free days during his challenge, but I could be mistaken. Have you read his book, Finally Fit at 50? After living that kind of lifestyle for so long, his body had to be in such shock after starting BFL....plus he wanted it BAD and nothing was going to stop him! (that's the real secret)

He was so determined that he convinced the gym owner to give him keys so he could workout when the gym was closed in the wee hours of the morn. That is dedication and that's what it takes to win at anything. We need to be dedicated.

Is it really all that important to get in that good of shape in such a short time? I'm all for a better lifestyle, but I think if we really push ourselves too soon, we will be more prone to injury, resulting in time off or working around the injury. My philosophy is "slow and steady wins the race". (Of course, not too slow that there is no progress at all.)
And like Norm said, he had a trainer to push him, that helps.

Porter told me that he lost 14 lbs in the first 10 days on BFL. He ate a lot of fastfood and salty food plus a lot of beer . That alone could account for such a dramatic weight loss!!!

Most (definitely not all) of the people that become champions/dramatic transformations have had an athletic background in the past. They have a key advantage (muscle memory). Also prior knowledge of proper lifting techniques is a huge advantage as opposed to the person that starts BFL from scratch (never worked out or played sports). Porter is the man and did a wonderful job in those 12 weeks!

Just keep in mind that skeptics are ones who make excuses why they cannot succeed.
People always love to question whether 30, 40, 50 pounds is possible -- if you choose to believe it is not possible for you to do it, then you have already lost the battle.
If there's one thing you should believe in is forward progress. By not believing you can do it, you might not do anything at all...so it's best to be ignorant and motivated rather than skeptical and lazy.
Stay positive!

To be honest, Seeing is believing, and im wathching my husband SHRINK before my eyes and its even hard to believe while I see it!! He's lost 18 pounds in almost 4 weeks and the weight loss is not slowing down, its speeding up! And he is following the program by the book, he does 3 days interval cardio, 2 days of light cross training cardio and 3 days weight training, hes not using a fat burner, (just using betagen, cla and protein powder) and he is taking his free day (eating whatever he wants at breakfast/lunch and dinner, but still using the BFL portion size and BFL for snacks on those days. Anyway, I can't wait to see him at the end of the 12 weeks (any myself for that matter!), I think he might even have a shot at being a champion! He definitely keeps me motivated for myself! :) I truly believe that incredible transformation is not only possible, but within reach for all of us.

I lost 25 pounds in 12 weeks, took 3 weeks off and gained back 5 pounds, and another 7 pounds over the next 12 weeks. Big difference in weight loss, right? Guess what? I really, really increased my lifting by going from machines to free weights. My body fat dropped another 4 points over the 2nd 12 weeks. although the weight did not drop much. 25 pounds, 50 pounds, etc. is very doable. If you have more to lose, you will lose it faster. The closer you get to your goal the harder the body wants to keep what fat it has. Losing weight is not easy. It requires a time commitment to exercise and to plan and make your meals. It requires a commitment to want to change to and to watch the eating of snacks at work, etc. This is hard work. Losing weight in such a short period of time? A good idea because not many people can sustain their initial level of enthusiasm for a continuous long period of time. Get the weight off and see some dramatic results quickly, and hopefully that will reinforce the desire to change, which then willhopefully equate into a lifetime change, which is what BFL is all about: for life!

O.K. I'm going to come clean.I havent been keeping any logs during this bfl and I'm starting week 2.O'n my first bfl I ordered over $250.00 worth of stuff from EAS.I had myoplex, betagen, and two other powders that I cant even remember their names.Drank some at every workout, took the shakes, kept my bfl journal, had my notepad at the gym and filled it out set by set,and was finally not happy with the results. This time Im wingin it.No supplements, just food.Really want to learn to eat six small healthy almost fat free meals per day.Want to have my free day,but not with complete abandon.I also want to really strive to hit that elusive 10.One thing Porter freeman said was "I'm going to do this or their going to find me dead in the gym."Gotta admit sometimes when I'm doin the cardio I feel just like that!I'm going to pump it as hard as I can at 46 yrs. old and do it.And if it kills me,well lets assume it wont.Life is kind of stressfull right now.Got 5 kids fro 24 to 11 and all living home. One in college.I work crazy hours and as much overtime as I can get.My wife works at a preschool. We are very busy people, and yet she supports me in taking the time to workout every day.And for me,its alot of time.Got to drive to the gym, thats 15 min,and then I never finish the workouts in as quick a time as is laid out in the book.I forgot to mention,my goal is not just to get down to 170 lbs,but at the same time to inspire my wife and children to become more active and eat right.Well its only the start of week three, still a long way to go.lets take it one day at a time.
