Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (11 posts) at 11:38 AM:
I mix the powder with ice, choc lowfat soy milk (just about 1/4 cup), sometimes i add a tblsp of natural peanut butter, flaxseed, and blend well. i LOVE them! i think the trick is the vanilla or chocolate low fat soy milk.

yea the Myoplex lite has gotten kinda "gritty" tasting over the last yr or 2 .. ( it used to be liek drinking cake batter...very sinful tasting ;) ~lol~ To round out your protein drink add fruit of your choice.to your low fat milk..& natural penut butter if you wish... if you add frozen bananas to a vanilla pro powder you end up with an almost ice cream consistentcy! yum!!

Thread: What does everyone do when sick? (55 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (60 posts) at 08:16 AM: What does everyone do when sick?
Okay so I am sick not flu more of a cold or something. I have sore throat, can't talk much, feeling a bit congested. My body yes of course feels very weak due to being sick. I however, have still been making myself go to the gym and do the same thing I was before. Except my cardio has been just plain cardio no real HIIT. I did my UBW but didn't use free weights I used machines. Do you think it would be better for my body if I stopped working out for a couple days? Today I have a class I signed up for - a free class with two personal trainers (they work out with you 45 min) So I am still going to go (I am a little crazy.....but it's free!!!) Sunday is my free day so I will not workout and I will try to rest. Suggestions? Is the one day off enough of a break for my body to get back?? (and I did go to the doctor but I don't have anything specific so no magic medicine.) What would you do?

okay, not sure how that just happened with above post.. but this is what i meant to post..... see how you feel after your free day. I have been sick myself this week. I thought tues i would take the day-off. well I have not been able to get a workout in since. So I am will be so ready to go today when I get back to the gym. Take care of yourself and listen to your body. You may need a few days of rest. I did.

Body for Life Forum Message by rbsamy (416 posts) at 09:09 AM:
As far as your challenge goes. You get sick your sick can't really help that fact. I am thinking of re-doing week 4 for myself as a make-up. Just make sure you are still eating clean. If I would have pushed myself to the gym there was no way i was going to be hitting any 10's anyways. Just like you mentioned with your cardio. so get better and then you can go for those 10"s.

Body for Life Forum Message by kjsmith (18 posts) at 09:20 AM:
I was sick last week with an upper respiratory infection. I made sure that I ate clean and I let myself have a free meal instead of a free day. I was still able to loose 7lbs!! Make sure you drink plenty of fluid and I suggest using Zycam. It's a homeopathic nasal gel that shortness the duration of colds. Kris

Body for Life Forum Message by ReenieC (152 posts) at 11:23 AM:
i would take some time off and let your body heal and get plenty of rest. It's important to remember that this is body for LIFE, and well, life happens. Like I recommended to others, don't feel guilty if you take some time off, just because we're doing a 12-week challenge doesn't mean we have to have perfect weeks - we can't expect ourselves to change our lives according to the BFL program and live without any interruptions. So, if you're sick, take some time to let your body heal properly. Then when you come back to your workouts, you'll be able to hit your 10's and then some! Keep your eating clean and healthy though, being sick shouldn't be our excuse or reason to slack off completely!! Just take care of yourself!! Good luck, and I hope you are feeling better soon!!

whomever posted the bootcamp routine: http://www.musclemedia.com/training/BootCamp.asp I bookmarked it, but lost the thread. Anyway you are rocking my abs world. I've been going to a half hour abs class at ballys once a week, but when I'm left to my own devices I wonder around the gym like I've had a head injury, unable to remember how to do anything but inclined situps. Also, I love the wheel with handles. Wish I could draw it. So, I want to send out a thank you to good will for that $2 piece of manna from heaven.

I have taken it once and I didn't have any problems. I did only take a half a dose (one pill). I did have a headache later in the day, but I was having a rough day anyway. Before I chose it, I was looking at the Stacker2 XPLC. This is real new and when talking with the lady at GNC, she stated she didn't know anyone who had taken it. She stated she took the Thermo Dynamx and she knew several others who had great success with it. She is the one who advised to take a half dose first.

Is there a significant difference b/w Betagen and Phosphagen? They both contain creatine, right? I'm not as sore as when I first began 2 weeks ago. I'm hitting my high points. I'm thinking I may need to up my weights. I am beginning to miss the soren feeling. No pain, no gain is what I've thought. Makes me think something needs to change if I'm not as sore as before. Any ideas PLEASE someone?????

Body for Life Forum Message by jamber (983 posts) at 09:03 PM:
Well I think what a lot of us do is switch up the exercises at the 4 week mark. At least for me, its perfect because just about the time I stop getting sore with every workout, I change up and Whammo...I'm super sore again. Its just enough time to really work the exercise hard, but still keep your muscles guessing.

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (71 posts) at 09:35 PM:
Well, I don't get sore very often and I know I hit my 10s as I can hardly lift my arms when I'm done. I have changed my exercises and still do not get very sore.... I don't use Betagen or Phosphagen either. Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!! Suzanne

I have hit every workout, have eaten clean- much attributed to planning and executing the plan- just do it! Just concerned about my workouts in end of Feb. with the modular class (working on 2 graduate degrees). Thread: Food Costs (508 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by JoMama (32 posts) at 08:12 AM:
My two cents.... A BFL buddy and I spent a month figuring out our cost per serving for BFL. My personal challenge was to see if I could eat BFL-style for....ahem....a dollar a day. I set up a spreadsheet into which I would enter the foods purchased when I bought them at the store. I even added in the sales tax. Then, it figured price per serving. It's tough to do it for a dollar a day...but it can be done if one is willing to eat homegrown sprouts, to learn how to use legumes and soy flour, to learn how to convert dried powdered milk into cheese, to shop at Aldis, etc. The point is not the dollar a day. The point is that I had no idea what each meal cost me until I started breaking it down per ingredient and per meal. After I really had the information about which foods were the absolute cheapest, it was easier to make cheap choices for...let's say...four meals a day. Oh, we have grown kids and grandkids. At first, they laughed at my experimentation. Now, they ask for advice :)

Body for Life Forum Message by kjsmith (18 posts) at 09:26 AM:
We are a family of 3 and I spend $140 a week. Something that helps me is to create a meal plan for the week and then make my grocery list off that. If it's not on the list I don't buy it. I also find that making a variety of foods helps me stick with the meals. Kris

Body for Life Forum Message by Lese (22 posts) at 09:31 AM:
I only cook for me and an occasional friend. But I have found that Aldi (if you have one). Is the cheapest place to buy produce. I also get very good canned tuna (.49) and chicken there (1.69). Frozen shrimp and fish is a good buy also.

Body for Life Forum Message by Lese (22 posts) at 09:32 AM:

Body for Life Forum Message by JoMama (32 posts) at 11:40 AM:
Lese, You are so right! My food cost per serving analysis showed that Aldi beats all other stores, even the big discount stores, almost all of the time. In fact, sometimes the savings were almost shocking.

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscles_Marinara (27 posts) at 01:34 PM:
You people apparently eat like birds. Either that or I suck at grocery shopping. Before BFL I would spend about $40/wk on food (just me). NOW, it's closer to $80-90 because of the quality of what I have to buy..

Some of y'all are gonna "hate me" for this, but I broke it down and found out that because I've trained myself to basically eat the same stuff a lot, I'm down to about $30 a week, just being a single guy. The way I can do it is that I go to Wal-Mart and get their $5 a bag chicken breast fillets and cook them on my George Foreman grill....I'll switch up sometimes and get fish, but it's mostly those fillets. I eat a LOT of brown rice but it's not the pricey stuff, just Winn Dixie store brand...my water supply is usually Distilled water: 69 cents for a gallon jug, which supplies me and my 3 cats for about a half-week or sometimes a little more. I usually do frozen store brand veggies, but I don't mix those up too much...usually green beans, carrots, or peas. I switch up and do ground turkey, too, plus I hunt, so every once in a while, I can throw wild game into the food system. I got to GNC and got Myoplex and Metr-x on sale, so that cut my costs down... My cottage cheese/yogurt mix is usually store brand fat free stuff. Hope this helps. I guess I've got a knack for cheap living because I've always managed to eat cheap...even in the "bad old days"....

I ended up having a massive e-mail heated debate about me spending soo much time in the gym and working things out around exercise and eating. They were basically mocking me that i'd managed to not have a drink for the whole of January. Trying to explain to people who have never really tried dieting and intense exercise to create the body they want is pretty hard. I'll def try and get some pictures up here next week.

I love music & I always assign songs to my life...each of my children has a song chosen for them...

So I chose a song for this challenge "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.  When I feel cravings I sing the song to the bad food & I get past it...sometimes I throw in alittle dance...

So yesterday McDonald's was on my mind since I woke up (don't know why)...by midday I couldn't take it anymore & decided to give in...

I kid you not...as soon as I turned into McDonald's driveway guess what song comes on the radio..."I Will Survive"...

Now I use to never believe in coincidences until I learned the true meaning of the word  a year ago...

Coincidence means to "co-incide"...things that are meant to happen at the same exact time!

Needless to say, I can't sing with a mouth full of food...so I decided to drive away & sing my song...it was like my world is supporting me...

I was so excited...I didn't go back...no McD's for me...

So if you had to give your challenge a song, which one would it be & why?

Denise

I love PCD's "doncha" as well and i LOVE the Nike ad!

I don't think it is ever bad to cycle supplements. That way your body doesn't become too dependant on it and stop producing it's own form of, whatever the supplement is. Just my opinion. =) I think this time around, I will take it for 10 weeks, cycle off for 2-4 wks.

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1628 posts) at 03:51 PM:
creatine monohydrate is creatine monohydrate no matter what the name on the label is. I always buy the cheapest stuff I can find. If it says 99% pure on the label it's good. Creatine takes a little while to get used to but the 5 gms per serving is for men for a woman I think 3 gms should be enough. A loading phaze is still necessary though, it's just been proven that a shorter one is just as good (3 days). After you're done your loading phaze you should notice a large increase in your strength. If you do not then it could be a bad batch or you may need a longer loading phaze or you could even be a non-responder. However the pecentage of non responders is very low with creatine. Don't forget to mix it with a high glycemic carb. I'm currently using half a scoop of powdered gatorade (yuck!! but it works). If you really want to try a serious boost in the gym try mixing it with some l-arginine also. This'll give you wicked muscle pumps. I would also reccomend some glutamine post exercise and before bed to aid with recovery. I've been doing this for the past 4 weeks and my arms have grown almost an inch :) Oh and I've been using Muscle Armor as well but I'm finding this stuff to be pretty damn expensive. I hope this helps. P.S. the bloating will disapear after a little while. I have a very sensitive stomach.

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1628 posts) at 03:59 PM:
Also in response to Boise Lifters post. Creatine is not something our body produces it is an amino found in protien mainly red meat. However in order to get just 5 grams of creatine from a steak you'd have to eat a 10oz steak a day. During loading phaze 4 10oz steaks a day LOL And How does creatine and HMB work together? Creatine chanels water into your muscles (very non scientific) since our muscles are made mostly of water this in turn makes us stronger which allows us to lift more. HMB EAS says is actually a muscle builder so this suplement is supposed to actually add muscle. Therefore on paper creatine and HMB appear to be the ultimate team I'd personally add Glutamine for repair and there's the perfect trio. Hope this helps....Jay

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (296 posts) at 04:26 PM:
Young Guns says creatine is not something our bodies produce. Really!?? Here's a quote from Creatine-com, a site about nothing but creatine: "Creatine is made up of three amino acids - Arginine, Glycine and Methionine. Our liver has the ability to combine these three amino acids and make creatine. The other way we get creatine is from our diet." I would say that rather conclusively shows that creatine IS manufacured in the body. Problem is, it's not maintained in OPTIMUM amounts, which is why you should go for that 5.25 grams a day, without cycling, without loading, and without peeing out a bunch of wasted creatine. MShaun wants to know what the roles of Phosphagen creatine and HMB are. Please see my next post.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (296 posts) at 04:37 PM:
MShaun, Phosphagen creatine is simply EAS's brand of creatine monohydrate. They came up with the name based upon how it works chemically. To understand what creatine does and how it works, go to www.absolute-creatine.com. Essentially it drives water into the muscles and enlarges them, giving them more strength to do a workout, and it promotes healing and recovery of muscle tissue. As to HMB, it is said to stop the catabolism of muscle during heavy exercise or prolonged dieting. There is much controversy over whether it really does that, but I know it is not harmful. Marc Bennett, the director of Body for Life, swears by it, and I do trust him.

I have started to accept that I will have to stay on BFL for the rest of my life because I know from past experiences that if I go off, I will go right back to the way I was. I am starting to actually feel different about the food I used to love so much. When I eat it, it doesn't give me the satisfaction it used to. But, I know that it is way too easy for me to make free day every day. I don't think you are wierd at all. All or nothing is ok if you choose the right all. My personal opinion: if you are going to take freeday, do it and enjoy it without restrictions. If you have to make it laborous, it defeats the purpose. It's like saying you are going to take a day off of work but only taking half the day off or working off and on throughout the day. That's not a day off! If you are an all or nothing person, then I say choose one or the other-free day or no free day. Then you at least feel in control because you have chosen to do it or not do it. I'm not saying to make it an all out, morning to evening binge. You don't have to plan freeday, but think about the choices you make and how they will make you feel before eating something. You might find that free day tones itself down on its own because you grow tired of feeling like crap and the food doesn't hold the same power over you. Like I said, this is just my opinion:)

If you had a good eating week that is awesome. The food part is the hardest for me to keep in check. Get back on track with your workouts this week and kick some serious bootay! Stef :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by ReenieC (152 posts) at 11:37 AM:
Hi Kris, this program should not be about making us feel guilty; instead, focus on what you're able to do and do that with intensity. If time and work constraints are holding you back from a workout, think of what you can do on days when you know you can't get to the gym. for instance, I'll take 3 walk breaks during the day and walk around the campus and go up/down flights of stairs...when done at a fast pace this can really rev up your metabolism!! Bring a couple dumbbells to work and keep by your desk...just some ideas!! The important thing to remember is this is body for LIFE...and life should not be a guilt trip. You are doing something to improve yourself, and congratulate yourself for trying.

I eat a 1/2 cup of Fiber One cereal with my eggwhite omlette. 1/2 cup has: 60 calories 2 g protein 25 g carbs 14 g fiber 1 g fat I find it helps keep me "regular" and without it I have trouble. With 14 g of fiber, you can't go wrong. Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!! Suzanne

Don't buy Hershey's suger free chocolate syrup. In a moment of weakness I thought it would be okay on an anyday sunday. Well, it was not okay, really not okay. More like heinous anyday including Sunday.

I took the EFL "Tropical Treat" and adjusted it to what I have. I liked the thread on how much people spend on groceries. I got a weird voyeristic thrill out of comparing grocery bills. Embarrased to say I have no idea what I spend, but berries are cheap in Oregon in the summer so I froze a metric tone.... 1 cup cottage cheese 1 cup sugar free yogurt 1 cup frozen blueberries 1 cup frozen rasberies a few dried cherries and some lichee because I had a can of it around I think this is proportionate....and should make two servings.

Thread: Packing vegetables? (31 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by beachsoccer (18 posts) at 05:04 PM: Packing vegetables?
You know how there are mid meals of like two eggs and an orange or like an apple and a piece of string cheese? Do other people have ideas for ways to pack a mid meal with a vegetable? This week I packed a baby artichoke and two eggs, or a baby artichoke and string cheese and it worked out well. No prep and easy to snack on during my graphic design critiques. I'm looking for other unobtrusive snacks....I don't want to be stinky messy snack girl, but I want to eat in class after I swim at night. I tried veg. sticks with cottage cheese and salsa yogurt dip, which is okay, but a little dangerous because of the spill factor I don't want to have to lick tupperwear in class. Augh, just thought of one: Red or green pepper and egg whites or string cheese. Anyone have more ideas?
