Thread: What does everyone do when sick? (96 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Head (61 posts) at 10:25 AM:
Hope you took the time off. I started feeling the same way over a week ago, and continued to push hard through my workouts last week (under the influence of Dayquil) and just continued to get worse until I finally gave in. I'm on day 4 of my layoff, which combined with some strong antibiotics, will hopefully get me back to strength later this week.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (714 posts) at 10:46 AM:
I got sick in week 2 - sore throat which moved to congestion, sneezing, etc. My lymph nodes were swollen, too, so I knew it was going to take a while to get rid of. I went to the gym everyday except one (and that was the day before my free day, so I was able to have two full days of complete rest). I did my routines as scheduled, but I did go a bit lighter on everything. Finally, my bad cold cleared up, and I kicked everything into high gear again. I think the main reason I kept working out even while I was sick was that I was afraid of quitting. It was still early in my challenge that it could be too tempting to say, "Oh, I'll just start over." Right. Being sick and still working out at the gym made me hyper-aware of the sheer number of germs that could be spread in that place. If I'm any indication, it's bad! So I now wash my hands in the gym LOTS and take extra care in touching stuff.

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscles_Marinara (31 posts) at 11:18 AM:
They (whoever they are..) say that it's still OK to work out as long as it's 'above the neck', but as soon as it moves down, take some time off.. I currently have the sniffles, but I'll be at the gym tonight, with kleenex & hand sanitizer...

Thread: Depression (103 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ThirdTry (9 posts) at 08:26 AM: Depression
Has anyone else felt depressed since starting the challenge? Saturday it was like a light switch for me something (little) pissed me off then I could not get over it, I felt grumpy and depressed up until Sunday afternoon. I had no reason to be depressed, the challenge was going good, I had completed all my exercise for the week and had a free day to look forward to but I felt depressed enough that I felt like quitting the challenge, like it didn’t matter at all to me at the time. By chance I picked up a Vitamin Cottage ad and it had an article on 5-HTP which mentioned that a low fat diet could lower serotonin levels which lead to depression, irritable, etc… So I did a search for low fat diets and depression and found this article: http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20030429-000002.html Here it a link to the Vitamin Cottage 5-HTTP: http://www.vitamincottage.com/common/adam/DisplayMonograph.asp?storeID=47821D90B2AA4A7C91E85DD915331B09&name=ConsSupplements_5Hydroxytryptophan5HTPcs I would like to know how many others have felt depressed and if you have tried 5-HTP and if it really does what is advertised? Thanks Greg

I have to say its an interesting topic to ponder... I've always had a little bit of a problem with anxiety... and it seems to me overall that my attacks have lessened since I've started BFL... but my mood swings have actually become more extreme.... generally I am feeling more at ease and content... but it seems about once a week I get *extremely* depressed, more than I would have before... so instead of it all just being spread out... my poo mood is all concentrated into a few hours... but then on the flip side I've been having some extreme highs as well.. which probably happen almost daily... where I just find myself totally loving everything... I've heard that working out (weight lifting, resistance training etc) can put you in a pretty good mood.. and come to think of it it seems that my "high days" are on my workout days....

Since starting the program almost 9 weeks ago now I've been able to come off of my medication which I was taking for 2 years!

Body for Life Forum Message by Shoe (40 posts) at 03:17 PM:
It sounds like you had a bad day. Not really depression, as in a medical diagnosis. Bad days happen. Some days I wake up grumpy and mean and nothing can really snap me out of it. But then the next day, I'm a bundle of wonderful and on top of the world. And I'm *on* antidepressants, for heaven's sake. I wouldn't attribute a bad 24-hour span to anything more than a bad 24-hour span; unless it's a depressive episode lasting weeks that affects your ability to sleep, to function, to respond to your life, I wouldn't be concerned.

I got a couple of body fat calculators from someone on here, but it was bookmarked in my old computer that died. The best one was a general fitness/weight loss site and had food diary, BMI calc, activity log, etc. I've googled it but I couldn't find it. Anyone know which one it could possibly be? Or can you rec a good one? TIA!

I used BetaLean by EAS on my first challenge years ago and had great results. I don't even know if it's still around! Now I use a thermogenic fat burner called Lipodrene-SR. It's ephedra free. I absolutely LOVE it. I have tried Hydroxycut, Fahrenheit and the BetaLean that I mentioned before. Lipodrene-SR has worked the best hands down. I swear I could eat anything I wanted and not gain an ounce! It's ephedra free, so it doesn't give me the jitters or anything. One time, I took two tablets and I got a little hyper, but nothing crazy. People probably thought I was on something... I guess I was!

Thread: who takes betagen? (96 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (184 posts) at 07:50 AM:
I consider Betagen to be a "core suppliment". It's one of my main foundations, and I've used it on every successful challenge I've done. Creatine and HMB are both shown to help with both strength gains and muscle recovery. Make sure you are driniking enough water with it. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (577 posts) at 08:22 AM:
I wouldnt dream of doing a challenge WITHOUT Betagen. If I could only use one item-it would definately be this. Out of all the supplements I have ever tried-I think Betagen is the absolute BEST product on the market.

Body for Life Forum Message by gonnabeahottie (31 posts) at 11:31 AM: Betagen Question
Another Betagen question. I have been taking it daily, except for free day of course, one dose before I work out, and one dose about a 1/2 hour after I get home from the gym. Should I be taking it every day, or is it better to take it only on weight lifting days?

Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (31 posts) at 02:57 PM:
Take it every day, including free day. You need to keep your muscles saturated with the creatine, glutamine, and HMB the Betagen contains. If you want to make sure just call EAS and ask them. They're very helpful.

hey everyone... I'm thinking about buying some myoplex lite packets to whip up as meal replacements...but have no clue as to which is the tastiest? what's the best flavor in your opinion?? also, do you thin it down?? I've read they're kinda thick... help me please! :) thanks... jen

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (403 posts) at 01:44 PM:
My favorite is cappuccino. I first blend 1 c. of crushed ice with 10 ounces of water. Then I add the mix, some cinnamon and 1/2 tsp of instant coffee. Then pulse it just a few times so it doesn't get too frothy. This fills up one of those big 32 oz. plastic cups. I like it thick because I like it to be like a "milkshake." I never add skim milk, however,....too many extra calories and sugar IMO.

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (237 posts) at 01:58 PM:
I LOVE the chocolate/vanilla/strawberry pack!! I like them all just the way they are but sometimes dress them up. I also add extra water and no ice so mine aren't as thick!! HTH Shelly =)

I also like the chocolate/vanilla/strawberry pack. My favorite is to just add a dash of cinnamon to the vanilla. Try to mix it up as much as you can. Sticking to one flavor will get boring pretty quick. Rich

These threads keep me laughing every time they pop up. Why? Because I think the strawberry packet is the absolute worst tasting one of all!! See, some people like it best, others can't stand it. Some like chocolate, others dump it down the drain. LOL You just have to experiment. Maybe someone should start a swap type of thing where you trade flavors until you find the one you like the best:-)

    Question!

Im using an equivalent to betagen (creatine mixed with high glycemic powder) and it has 32g of carb per serving, which comes from sugars of course.

Should I just take it by itself or make a meal out of it? This one is really stumping me LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by Emeril (18 posts) at 09:07 PM: Betagen Question - When to take
I swear I tried to find the answer on the supplement page...BFL recommends that you work out first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to most effectively burn fat and should not eat for an hour after workouts, especially cardio... If that is the case, when should you take Betagen on days that you do cardio? And if you lift first thing in the morning, when should you take it on days that you lift?

Body for Life Forum Message by JerryBraam.com (165 posts) at 07:34 AM: BFL Cruise 2006...

    Hello Gang,

I hope everyone is doing well on their 2006 BFL & Torch Challenges. Having suffered a severe sprained ankle, I have been crutches for over 2 weeks now! From past injuries, I know not to rush it...patience (right?) <LOL>

I spent most of the day yesterday (Sunday) trying to do chemistry homework...but I found it was much more exciting speaking on the phone with people joining us on the cruise. They shared several thoughts. Their topics covered getting ready by finding birth certificates, how excited they were to get their cruise confirmations and cabin assignments, finding and talking with their cabin mates, deciding which shore excursions they will be taking on each island, partying with Porter, Abb Ansley, Cheryl Murh, Aaron Ferguson & other Trackers...but...

Most everyone reminded me...TODAY (Monday Jan 30th) marks 20 weeks before we set sail to the Bahamas!

So...How many days are left in your challenge?

     Jerry

My problem is that I'm so obsessed with BFL, I have this habit: as soon as I climb into bed at night, I close my eyes and OBSESSS, DREAM, about getting into awesome shape. My six pack abs, my tight butt, my shapely legs...if anyone disturbs me, I get annoyed. *sigh* I told myself that I will allow myself to obsess like this only during the challenge. After 8 weeks, maybe I'll be more interested. hee hee!! Altought DH did say "your butt is definately smaller" ahhhhhhh I asked him to say it again and again and I jumped up and down. I RELISH that comment.

Some weeks you might not lose anything, and then another week you might drop 5 pounds! You should also be taking your measurements, because sometimes you can lose inches and not weight, because muscle takes up less space then the fat does. So, it is possible that you have lost some inches. Another thing you should be doing, is when you do weigh yourself, do it first thing in the morning after you have emptied your bladder, because weight can change throughout the day. Also take your pictures every two week, it has to see your progress this way. Just check out all the profiles here on the Tracker, there is plenty of ammo here!!!!! I wish you all the best!!!! I am starting to notice that just like the paper towel theory I am loosing inches in layers. Even though I am on day one of week 4, I have noticed a great deal of progress. Today I went down a whole pant size. Yesterday I was able to pull my 18's down to the ground WITHOUT them being unbuttoned. When I first started the program, the same pants I had fat rolling over the top and I had to lay back to zip up. I have shared the paper towell theory with my family,it is a great way to compare yourself and to keep your motivation up. Thanks for posting it!!!!!!

Kris, I am a shift worker too, sounds like the same hours. I know exactly how you feel. I keep trying to get my act together, but I have had a terrible time getting on track. I am trying not to give up, but it does get discouraging. I try to workout in the evenings after my kids go to bed, then I don't feel guilty for leaving them. Also, when I am working midnights, I try to get up before my oldest daughter gets out of school to work out so it is out of the way, and I still have a few hours to spend with her before going back to work. It is a lot to balance, but I think it is definitely worth sticking to. I just need to plan better. Best of luck! Keri

We have a really Great Team on our hands here, and I think we are gonna take this Challenge, I can FEEL IT! And to make things REALLY EASY to add points to your total, GET those points in on time, Look at the differance in January teams, VERY CLOSE, close enough to have been decided on by getting the sheets in on time! So remember, 2 points per week to get your points in PER PERSON, will be close to 60 points for the CHALLENGE FOR THE ENTIRE TEAM! 60 POINTS!!! SO LET ME ASK AGAIN! ARE YOU READY!?!?

I don't know what it means...having a high hip/waist ratio....but I know it is used to determine "healthiness" in females. I suppose if you were to gain lots of weight, it would sit on your hips. I also have a high hip/waist ratio and my weight tends to go to my hips first. Just means we are curvy! :) But really, I don't know.

Body for Life Forum Message by LincolnJenn (64 posts) at 09:33 AM:
Having a high level of intra-abdominal fat means that you have more fat intermixed in your organs than the "average" person. This is a genetic thing. It is associated with a higher risk of cancer and type II diabetes. BUT, the magic number here is 35", your waist is less than 35", so do not stress. I have the same thing, the important thing is to have your bodyfat% in the healthy range. You cannot help where your body decides to store it's fat! I learned all this in school! JEnn

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (105 posts) at 09:46 AM:
I am just so baffled as to why fittogether reads my measurements as high risk for intra-abdominal fat? .. I mean it would make sense if my waist were bigger than my hips... but theyre not... o_O..... ?? If I had fat in my organs, wouldnt my waist be BIGGER?

Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (382 posts) at 09:48 AM:
Scatter, you need to make sure you take your hip measurement in the right spot on fittogether.net. There should be a groove (along the sides of your hips) where it dips in (kinda where your underwear ride - that's if you have bikinis). Make sure you place the measuring tape in that groove and see how your body fat % comes out. Does it come out any differently?

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (105 posts) at 09:51 AM:
yea, I did my measuremtnes according to fittogether's instructions...

I think the pace of visible change quickens after the internal change is well underway. Think about steak ( marbelized ) there is excess fat in our muscles and organs and tissues which must be burned up first, before the fat on our more obvious places goes away. Stay with it, work intensly, eat clean, and you will be thrilled :) Yours in Health, Kerry

Thread: Frustrated and a bit disappointed... (191 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1705 posts) at 02:54 AM: Frustrated and a bit disappointed...
Hi Gang! Hope you’re doing well… I haven’t been on Tracker much lately because I’ve continued to have a lot of trouble with illness. For the last 2-3 wks I’ve had constant problems with infections in my sinuses and lungs. Since I have asthma and allergy issues this is not that unusual for me. In fact, I keep a reserve supply of antibiotics on hand with instructions from my allergy & asthma doctor to take them when I feel they are needed. But the infections would appear to go away but then come back the next day. I’m also having terrible sleep issues. Despite feeling exhausted, I haven’t been able to get to sleep until at least 5AM. And then it’s hard to get up for at least 10 hours… Once again I’m suspecting that I’m going through another hormonal imbalance. My guess is that my thyroid medication is too low. I tried to get to the lab on Friday to get my hormone levels checked but by the time I got up the lab was closed. So of course I’ve been quite frustrated and disappointed with how the last 2 weeks have gone - especially since I didn’t miss a single workout and dropped 7lbs. the first 2 weeks of this challenge. But I can’t believe how much emotional pain I’ve been in lately… Granted, there have been some life issues that have complicated the situation...the IRS has threatened to garnish my disability checks, claiming that I owe taxes on my disability income… the insurance company that pays my disability benefits has warned me that I need to provide proof of my disability or they will stop my benefit checks... and I just feel so lonely and separate from the world… I’ve also felt quite a bit of anger towards my former best friends. This was the group of about 10-12 people - all in the same family-who were like family to me for the last 17yrs. Those friendships ended last September when I decided to no longer accept the insults and disrespect that seemed to be elevated by their inability to deal with my dropping over 100 lbs.. (yes, they’re fat and jealous!). I guess I felt that by now I would have received an apology for the terrible way they treated me. But I haven’t heard a word …unbelievable… And I’ve had to work very hard to fight that nagging little voice that’s trying to drag me down… “See Jim… your dreams are falling apart. Sure you did great for awhile. But now it’s time for you to face reality… that you don’t deserve to have your dreams of getting back into shape. You just need to accept that you’ll be sick and alone for the rest of your life. Besides, what woman is going to want a man who can’t even hold a job…“ Of course, I won’t buy into that garbage. That little tape that sometimes plays in the background is just the unfortunate consequence of having an abusive father as a young child… I’ll be OK gang, but I gotta tell ya I’m on the edge of tears right now…probably another good reason to suspect a hormonal imbalance. I want so much to drop all of the excess weight… I’m tired of not having a partner and sleeping alone for the last 13yrs… And I’m really fed up with people who treat my kindness and gentle nature as a weakness and a character flaw (as my former friends did). I just want to get on with my life… to write THAT book and use my testimony and experience to help others… (OK, that’s the end of my ranting!) Please, understand I don’t want any sympathy. Despite my frustrations and illness challenges I am quite blessed. But I needed to get this off my chest and let my friends know what was going on. And make no mistake – I’m still as motivated and committed to BFL as ever. I will NEVER quit! I know in my heart that God has big plans for me and that even at the age of 51, I’m just getting started… I decided to start C5 over next week. This week I’m going to work out if I feel up to it but my main focus will be getting to the lab and following up with my doctors. Most importantly, I’ve got to set up an appointment to get checked at the UCLA Pituitary Disorders Clinic in L.A. My instincts tell me that that will be a big breakthrough. Ideally, I’ll get back on track before too long and get back where I belong - on Tracker with my BFL buddies! Thanks for being there… Jim

Hopefully you will be back on your feet in no time.I have no idea of what you are going through, but in the year that I've known you, you remind me of one of those kids' toys... the weebles. They weeble and they wobble but they don't fall down. And Jim, because of your illness you have had to weeble and wobble, but you have never come close to falling down. And even if you did, I know you'd pick yourself right back up, dust yourself off and jump right back into the middle of a challenge! You are an inspiration to everyone here and we all hope you find some more answers to your health problems. Hang in there buddy! You're just getting started!

You have the ability to focus on your goals and overcome your challenges. Stay focused, amigo! Also, friends are friends regardless of your circumstances. True friends, like the ones you have earned here, stand by you in the rough times and the easy times. True friends will feel pride in your transformation accomplishments! Jealousy does not exist between true friends. Unfortunately, your friends appear to be fair weather friends. Don’t let them drag you down. Stay tough, remain focused on your goals and never give up! You can succeed through this. You will do it! We all are in your corner! TJ

Ya know Jshelton, you need to accept our sympathy 'cause you have it but one thing you don't need is pity. Every thing your going through is rough mainly with the friends and all. I want you to remember a couple of things though. 1) You have found out who your real friends are 2)Your an inspiration; What do I mean by that? The fact is I'm a photo addict. I can't get enough of before and after and it's photos like yours that hit home the most. Here I am a 27 year old man with 50 or so lbs to lose wandering if I can do it and then I see a photo like yours. Someone that has carried significantly more weight and come as far as you have and it astonishes me the reserve in people. The reserve in you! Right now you may feel like you've been knocked down but remember this: It's not how many times you get knocked down, it's that last time you get up that matters! And never, never give up the kindness and gentle nature that makes you who you are. These are true strengths of a Man. You must forgive me, I have had experiences close to yours and I'm mad and my eyes are misting of anger and hurt for you and me both so I'll end here but stay the course.

Hi Jim, I do understand some of what you are going through. The last two years have brought me some of the most difficult challenges I've ever faced. I left my previous job because the stress was causing major health problems. The job I'm at now isn't very fulfilling and I'm making 40% less in salary so its been difficult to adjust to the changes. I've also gone through a minor identity crises because it seemed that all of my friends had also left me behind when I started going through all of these trying times. Now, after a bit of perspective I'm realizing how much these so called 'friends' were holding me back from achieving my best self. I never realized how little they actually cared about me until the hard times started. The good thing about all of this is that I learned something about myself. I learned that I don't need validation from other people. I learned that I have the strength to get through any situation or adversity that comes my way. I too have been single for quite awhile but I realize that for me to attract the type of quality person that I'm looking for I have to also be that type of quality person. This is where I can make the improvements to be the best person I can possibly be. I know you're that type of person as well. My goodness! Look at how much you've already accomplished! And please don't ever give up the kindness and gentleness that you possess. There are women out there that value those qualities in a man. I know you can get past this and find your happiness again.

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (335 posts) at 11:35 AM:
It is a tough situation to "lose" all your old friends. Changing your life for the better by adopting new behavior patterns is incredibly tough. A local support system is very helpful while changing. If the people around you are not supportive, and you decide the change to your life is more important than the friends, you have taken one of the hardest first steps in becoming a healthier and stronger person, which will then lead to new friends and relationships. You will not be spending your time alone in the future. You will have that special person in your life. Now, given all this, having medical issues in addition to the lost friends makes changing even harder than it normally would be. Depression is a natural reaction to everything you are going through. The inability to get to sleep, and then the inability to wake up are classic depression symptoms. The solution is time: Time to get over things, time to lose the weight, and time to make new friends. In addition, hopefully the UCLA Pituitary Disorders Clinic will help and perhaps getting on some type of anti-depression anxiety meds will help also. My prayers will be with you.

Thread: Thinking (and this could be dangerous).... (194 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (868 posts) at 08:44 AM: Thinking (and this could be dangerous)....
So, I actually had a hard time sleeping last night and was thinking about food. All the food I had made that day preparing for this week. The food I wanted to eat. The food I have eaten....if it had to do with food....I was thinking about it. This is something I don't really get....didn't get it on the last challenge and don't really get it now. The first challenge it frustrated me, now I am just in amazement. Before BFL-- I was eating like crazy...for months. I was on Weight Watchers before that, but due do life changes (separation/divorce/move/single parenthood, etc) I stopped. I learned great things on WW and did well. But lapsed into bad habits again. Typical day of eating for me started with 24 ounces of full sugar cappuchino and a HUGE cookie from the gas station (man, those are good). Regular eggs and hashbrowns from the cafe for breakfast, fast food for lunch, chips or chocolate for snack, decent dinner, but large portions, and then snacking most of the night on chips and cheese, popcorn or crackers. And diet coke all day long. With all of this bad eating, I packed on 10 pounds over the course of a year. I felt terrible, my skin had erupted, tried, stressed, anxiety...just icky. I exercised moderatly....maybe 2-3 days a week for 20 mins...nothing special. Since doing BFL, I haven't really "lost" this additional 10 pounds. yes, I have built muscle, lost inches, and lost body fat, but the real question here and why doesn't fat just melt off when we stop feeding our bodies crap? We make these huge changes in our diet and exercise routine for the better and yet it seems to take a long time....longer for some of us....for this fat to just come off. I know we are now feeding our bodies correctly and fat doesn't just disappear, however look at that diet! That is a terrible free day, yet alone a daily diet. I should have gained 30lbs, not 10lbs! I guess overall I don't REALLY understand diet and nutrition and how everything interacts. Which is okay....I am okay with following a plan that is tried and true. There are days that I wish I understood though. Especially when fast food sounds good, those cookies tempt me, or when I just don't feel like getting to the gym. Any theories? Suggestions? My motivation is here, but after 4 weeks, I have lost minimal weight and 2% body fat....and my diet IS in check. I can say this with confidence. So what gives? Teresa

From what I understand a 2% bodyfat loss is really good in that time frame. I know it is frustrating and I really can't explain it except to say everyone's body is different. I gain weight really fast. If I ate that diet for a year, I would have gained 50 or more pounds. However, I am able to lose it fairly quickly too. I can only think that this difference between people who gain/lose slowly and those who gain/lose fast is metabolic. I'm sorry I can't be more help except to say I think you are doing fine because you are losing body fat and don't worry about the scale. Smile, you will get there!

Teresa...I am soooooooo there with you. I KNOW where my potholes are. I'm coming to accept some things in life that I've battled or fantasized about in the past. One thing is, I'm nearing 40. I believe by today's standards, I'm in great shape for (almost) 40. However, everytime I pop something in my mouth that is over and above what my body needs, it's making my journey that much longer. Two: My ass is what it is and it ain't gonna change. It's just going to be a little bigger or hopefully a little smaller. The shape? It's what was intended for me no matter what. Three: Binges! What is up with the damn binges??? With all that I've said above, it's just childish behavior. It has no room in my life. It's distructive, self sabatoge total bullshit. I get so mad at myself and then I forgive and unfortunatly forget. Bottom line...it's life. It doesn't get easier. Even when we look "preetier" in our own eyes, we will always fight the demons that we've planted deep down inside. Just like money isn't the fix for happiness, being fit isn't either. It's a struggle for most of us. I read somewhere recently that 40 MILLION Americans have an eating disorder. You're not the only one thinking!

It's hard not to compare yourselves with others and how you think your progess 'should' be going. I've even had a bit of a difficult time comparing myself to how my body reacted previously to weight loss efforts. For example, I attempted to do BFL about 5 years ago. I only made it 5 weeks before I fell off the wagon but in those 5 weeks I lost 17lbs of scale weight. This time around I've just finished week 4 and I've only lost 3 lbs of scale weight. BUT! I know that I've actually lost 6lbs of bodyfat and gained almost 3lbs of muscle. So now I measure myself in different ways. I can look at the little muscles forming on my biceps and be really proud of that. I look at the difference in my cardiovascular system and am proud of that too. I guess when it comes down to it, if I let myself be too discouraged by focusing on what I'm not doing instead of being proud of what I'm accomplishing than I'm not sure how long I would stick to the program. Always keep your accomplishments in the front of your mind and be proud of what you have already achieved!

Can'tStopMe--you always make me laugh...but good points.... jps2lean--no complaints about the bodyfat loss, but wouldn't mind MORE!!! ;) Lani-- I have lots of little things to be proud of....its the thinking that gets in the way. When I was in high school I was involved in the crew team (rowing). We worked out 6 days a week, rest on the 7th. 5 days a week we ran to the boathouse (at least 3.5 miles) and sometimes more depending. We did an hour of land training (weights and resistence) and then another hour of actual rowing, sometimes more. Most nights I didn't get home until 7:30 or 8pm. It was a long hard day. I was still overweight. Even after ALL of that hard long training....I still weighed 160. No clue what my body fat was. But I wore a size 12 and was still "fat" compared to my fellow teammates. I could run an 8 minute mile and I was at the top of the pack with my teammates...but I have always been "bigger" even if I was athletic. I want to break that barrier. I know most of this is about food....but how can you remain overweight and still be so athletic and active? Food. I know the answer....but I still ask the questions! I live at the beach...I want to feel comfortable here. ;)

Don't get so caught up in what the scale says. Remeber, you are losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time. Muscle weighs more than fat, so the number on the scale may not change. You said you were losing inches, that's the sign that you are losing fat. 1 pound of fat is significantly larger than one pound of muscle. Instead of focusing on the scale, focus on how your clothes fit and your body fat %. Don't get on the scale everyday- it's totally misleading. It sounds like you have made a great change in your body. Keep up the dedication and determination and you'll see even better changes. I know you can do it!!!!!!

My wife lost it on me yesterday. I don't know if this is a decades worth of frustration. But basically, we went to a neices birthday party yesterday. I have had two clean weeks and havent missed a workout. I have lost 12 lbs and feel good about the future. There was pasta, and mashed potatoes and I helped myself. I didn't go crazy. I had one plate. This was my free day and this was my free meal. I ate normal BFL throughout the day. So I was shocked that she was so upset. Truly, this was out of character for her. She basically told me that she was upset that I would have so much to eat when I am trying to lose weight. She said she is afraid that I am going to make her a young widow and that I won't be alive to see my children 4 and 7 get married. I know that a lot of this is years of frustration, so I let her vent. I told her that I have not deviated from the plan and that I am committed to living this lifestyle. The problem comes in 10 years of losing 40 lbs and then putting it all back on and then some. I have done this several times and everytime I have had some success. I sabotage everything and put it all back on. I promised that this time, I would seek counseling to try get to some deeper issues. I have had episodes where I wake up at night and eat in my sleep. And I know this can't be normal. I know that others have had to endure worse, but I feel totally deflated. I really had to explain the concept of free day and it just came off as justification for a binge. Thanks for letting me vent. I am still resolved. Probably more than before, the stakes have been raised, and I know that I am fighting for a lot now.

Has your wife read BFL? Would she do it to support you? I know how you feel. I don't have a spouse doing this to me, but my mother. She doesn't understand the concept of 6 meals, free day, or how the meals are made up. She comments on EVERYTHING that I eat. I have tuned it out over time, but if I am feeling down then the small comments do affect me. Plus, it is my mother, not my spouse! Maybe if she understood the program she could actually help you and maybe join you and make this the time that is DOESN'T fail. BFL is about health. you can do it no matter where you are--thin, fat, medium, whatever. It helps to have someone in your corner! Good luck. Teresa

I'm sorry to hear that your wife got upset with you. I agree with teresa about encouraging your wife to read the bfl book...especially the part about the free meal. then she might understand when you choose meals that don't fit the "diet" look. it's obvious she loves you alot...or she wouldn't care what you ate. she wants you to succeed...so share as much of bfl with her as you can. she'll be your biggest fan! :) good luck! jen

She REALLY needs to read the book. But I know how you feel. My mother is an "Atkins-Lifer" and does not believe that you can lose weight and be healthy while eating carbs. She constantly asks me what I have been eating. She says nothing, but gives that "look". Please dont let this deflate you. Your wife is truly concerned, but she is not informed. Ask her to read the book for you. Remember that it all starts with "believe". You already believe, you will "achieve" and then you will definetly "inspire".....maybe you will inspire her! PS...I used to sleepwalk terribly until I figured out that something was bothering me deep inside...try to figure out what that "something" is and then take whatever steps necessary. My "something" was lack of education and feeling like my parents were disappointed in me.....I am in college now. I also got counseling for other issues. It is TOTALLY worth it! Jenn

When I was with my now ex-bf, he didn't "get it" either. He wouldn't read the book, he'd just ask me questions about it> He never went off on me like your wife did, but he did tell me I "couldn't" eat something I was planning on eating on my free day. It was very frustrating to me, and I know that it has a way of eating away at you. I like the idea of asking her to read the book. Maybe then she can understand and help you, and it will help her not feel helpless while you build your better body. :) Jess

First know that she loves you with all her heart... Second know that she is not attacking you or BFL... Just as you cannot change 10 yrs in several weeks neither can she... She is speaking out of fear, but her fear will melt away in time just as your pounds will... As you make progress so will she...she cannot imagine a life without you...and you are doing what it takes to make sure that doesn't happen... Bring her into challenge, share & celebrate with her your daily victories (small & large)...in doing so you will educate her... You are a team...a partnership that is unbreakable & unstoppable when you work with each other...not against each other... When I explained what I did and why, she was understanding. Just frustrated, and this was the first time in 12 years that she expressed it in this way. Thank you for your suggestions. And I agree with so much....I agree especially with denise and that progress will help...and consistent work....i need to make it longer than just modest gains. I think her frustrations/venting, although tough to hear, are a testament to how much she cares for you and wants you to be around forever. When you take the measurement for your waist, are you supposed to go around the same level as your belly button? That's where I've been taking mine but didn't know if that was right. Those numbers on my waist and hips sure aren't moving..grrr... Thanks for your help :) Kathy

Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (382 posts) at 09:51 AM:
Your waist measurement is above your naval and below your ribcage ... at your narrowest part. You are measuring your "abdomen" when you measure at your belly button.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (323 posts) at 09:54 AM:
I was once told to measure where the bend is when you bend sideways, so it ends up like gbfan said, above your navel and below your rib cage. But the most important thing is just that you measure the same place each time.

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (868 posts) at 10:04 AM:

The narrowest part of my waist is AT my belly button. But I am really, really short-waisted. In order for any of my pants to hit me below the naval, I have to buy ultra low rise pants that would normally hit other girls at their hip bones or lower. So I measure my waist at my belly button, which is about 10-12 inches smaller than my hip and bust measurement. Melanie = )

    Thread: Venting: Roommate!!! (294 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by gonnabeahottie (31 posts) at 11:29 AM: Venting: Roommate!!!
My biggest obstacle with this challenge has been not drinking Cokes. I grew up on Cokes and I've always had a Coke every day. Now I'm drinking tons of water and trying to keep all other drinks out of my hands. I come home Saturday and my roommate has a whole box of Cokes in the fridge!! She knows that is really hard for me! I have tried getting my roommate motivated to stay on this program, non-stop. The best way for me to stick with it is if she doesn't fill up the kitchen with crap. I have gone as far as to cook her breakfast every morning, pack her lunch & snacks for her, and then cook her dinner. But as soon as I have a day when I can't cook for her, she runs to Chick-Fil-A or Arbys and then tries to hide it. What the hell? She has about 20% more body fat then I do, and she sits, depressed as can be, because she hates how she looks. Then she says she "doesn't feel like" going to the gym (hello depression) and she makes herself a big bowl of butter grits with a coke and then has a bag of popcorn with another coke, and then she goes to Arby's. She went through the whole case of cokes in 3 days! This is driving me INSANE because watching her eat like that really hurts me because she has turned it into a situation where if I don't cook for her or bitch loudly when she says she "doesn't feel like" going to the gym, she can't stick with the program. I'm going CRAZY here. And the cokes in the fridge are KILLING ME. HOW can I get through to her? HOW can I approach asking her to not buy Cokes, or else get a mini fridge for her room, because I don't want to even SEE them...? HELP.

I don't think you can truly "get thru" to anyone who isn't ready to make a personal change. I wish I could offer you some advice on the food and coke issue you have with her----but, when you live with someone who doesn't have the same motivational tools you have----that's gonna happen. All you can do is make your GOALS perfectly clear to them and that you don't appreciate her buying an entire box of cokes----she could have bought a 2-liter or something----but a whole box. I think she probably KNOWS the temptation you work against everyday---maybe she just doesn't care.

How badly do you want this transformation?? I think the best thing you can do for yourself is make a new mental strategy...tell your self over and over when you "think" you want a coke that you want to look and feel better more. Conquer it!! Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (868 posts) at 12:09 PM:
Bad advice here if you ask me. Get a new roommate? Okay run away from the temptation? There will be something else. First of all....stop the judgement against your roommate. Stop trying to make the transformation for her. If she wants to eat fast food all day long...then so be it. If she wants to fill the fridge with HER soda's...then so be it. Yes, they are a temptation for you...MOVE ON. BFL is about facing those challenges in the face and beating them, challenging yourself to RESIST and to become a better person. By FORCING your roommate into this challenge, you are probably turning her away. You may think that cooking all her meals and snacks and forcing her to the gym is helpful....but unless she is committed to it herself....it isn't helpful. Be an example. Do the challenge for YOURSELF that is IT. If she wants to join you...GREAT. If she wants to sit and be unhappy and eat fast food....fine. DO NOT JUDGE people just because you have found a way to make yourself better. Much like most things in life....we all have to find this out for ourselves. I think you are just approaching this all wrong.

The mini fridge: there's a good birthday gift idea. After about 6 months, I took a sip of one for kicks...tasted discusting!!! Haven't had soda since...well ginger ale when had a bad flu, but that's it. I agree with T. The only thing you can change - EVER - is yourself, your attitude, and your perspective on things. I went out with a good friend yesterday. We talk a lot to each other about our weight and how we need to do something about it. She's the same height as me but nearly twice as round. She hasn't yet committed to something like I have...she's got a few more things to conquer like her intensely strong self-sabotage. Anyway, we meet up at a cafe yesterday. I had a Greek salad with chicken, no dressing, and green tea. Her? A fat-laden sandwich, chips, and a big mocha. Did I want to dive into her lunch? A little bit. Was I DYING to have the chocolate chip cookies on the counter? Absolutely. But did I blame her for the temptations? No. I just have to adapt - and remain committed to my goals. I want it BAD!!

But it's not something we are entitled to and it's inappropriate, not to mention ineffectual and pointless, to demand it from someone, especially in the form of behavior modification. She's going to do what she does. Let it go. Concentrate on doing what you need to do in order to meet your own goals. Strengthen your own resolve. Build your own new habits. Make new friends with similar interests. When you get to the point where you can honestly thank her for bringing her cokes into the house because they present an opportunity for you to change your own behavior and grow in your own resolve, then you're on your way. Good luck.

Also, maybe she is feeling like she is forced to workout and eat right and that is having the opposite affect of making her want to eat more bad crap. She might have said that she wanted to do BFL, but as everyone knows it is not just a decision you make one time. How many times a day do you have to decide whether to work out, what not to eat, what to eat, how much, what to drink? She has to make the decisions and not just initially. She has to make the decision to work out everytime, just like you do. She has to make the decision what to eat everytime she thinks about food, just like you do. You can not make these daily decisions for her, it has to come from within her. Just my opinion. Best wishes for your continued success, Linn

I also agree with TCSTONE here... You can't just up and ask the roommate to move out because she prefers to drink Coke. Listen to my situation and tell me what you think. My wife and I are on completely different spectrums with weight problems... I'm over and she is under (due to a medical issue) and her doctor tells her to fill the fridge and cabinets with JUNK food and eat all the time. Now, I'm not sure if your roommate needs Cokes for medical reasons or not, but i'm just saying that for me to want to change myself, I have to overcome the fact that junk food will be everywhere, and I have to be the one that doesn't want to drink the Coke. Be strong and move on!! -Ed-

You cannot control what others around you do. Period. You are doing Body For Life because you are GONNA BE A HOTTIE. What your room mate does is of absolutely no concern to you. There are issues here that go beyond Cokes in the fridge. Your room mate is not jealous of you nor is she trying to sabatoge you. She is living in her moment. If she is moaning because she can't meet up to the standards for which you are setting, it is most likely because she fears your critisism in whatever form it may come. Asking her to not have something in her home because it affects your nutritional game plan is absolutely unfair. Take a longer look at your own goals and the path you are forging for yourself and stick to it. You are goal oriented and strong!!! P.S. BFL is for LIFE. Just think of this as a prep course for when you are married with children.

Then she would go to the gym with me and sit on the couch that was next to my stepper and watch TV. No joke. Like just being in the gym would make her lose weight. Well, I learned that you can't change someone that doesnt wanna change.... so you have to deal. What doesn't kill you will only make ya stronger. YOU CAN DO IT, in spite of her.

Thanks for all the advice. I haven't actually said anything to my roommate. But what I have seen is her very, very upset over being overweight. And I didn't ask her to do BFL, she started it on her own and was very adament about learning to cook, which I was teaching her, so she could eat right. My anger comes more from not being able to help her feel better about herself, more then her "sabotaging" my program. I see her bring home fast food, then I see her cry about it. And I try to tell her she would feel better about herself if she ate better, and she admits that she feels better when she eats well. But it's like a never-ending cycle. It's hard for me to come home to someone who is depressed 24/7 for the last 7 months and not feel depressed myself. In the last few weeks, it has just started bothering me a lot, after 7 months of living together.

It sounds like your roommate has more than a weight issue to deal with?? I would imagine that it would be awfully hard to keep someone on a life-changing program if they are suffering from depression. Maybe she needs to seek help, or talk to someone?? Just a thought. When you say, "The best way for me to stick with it is if she doesn't fill up the kitchen with crap" - right away you are giving your roommate the power to control your success on BFL. Don't let anyone have that much power over you. My advice would be to focus on your transformation, workout as you plan with or without your roommate, eat clean, and save a coke for free day if you must. Lead by example; once your healthy habits become second-nature to you, and your roommate sees and trusts in your ability and committment to your new lifestyle, then it will be up to her to find her own way and make the decision to change. But, you can still do this while being a friend to her - maybe she has some deep-lying issues to deal with, and maybe your new lifestyle is bringing them out for her. There's no reason why you can't be successful while being there for your friend too. Good luck to you...and remember your personal committment to your transformation and success. And if all else fails, we'll all chip in and relocate her to Lori's... :) Just kidding...

When you want to give yourself the best gift ever and won't take NO for an answer, that is when you stay motivated!!
