I start out with 1/4 dry and add 1/2 cup water. It makes 1/2 cup of cooked oats, which is considered one serving of carbs.

Thread: I just found out i'm pregnant!! (347 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (389 posts) at 12:49 PM:
Hello - yes, I became pregnant just after starting a challenge last January and delivered my son last October. You can do cardio, but no HIIT. Generally, most physicians will tell you they prefer you not get your heart rate over 140. I weight trained until I was 5 months along - my moves were limited as I ended up with round ligament pain. But, I also did not push the burnout to a level 10, but by and large kept doing the same exercises. No abdominal crunches either - that was pretty much the only elimination. Because I was able to still workout, I contained my weight gain and was able to lose the weight after he was born (all but the last 5 lbs within 6 weeks) which was a first (out of four) for me. You will notice a dramatic change in the second trimester. When I started to wear a heart rate monitor, getting my heart rate to 140 was no problem somewhat slow for me, but you'll appreciate that one later in your pregnancy. Overall, I personally had to add 300 calories to my diet, I was only putting in 1250 per day, so depending on what you are doing, you may need to add. Best wishes to you and listen to your body - meaning get your rest as well. Jeannine

Congratulations....you've gotten lots of great advice.... One thing I will strongly recommend is finding a pilates for pregnancy video (there are several out there) because pilates is fantastic for strengthening your core and you need all the core strength you can get while pregnant. You will probably hear people tell you that you cannot do any kind of ab work while pregnant but that it not true. They used to think it was bad to be on your back at all while working out, but as long as you're not there for very long and not holding your breath, you will be fine. Keeping your abs strong while pregnant makes a big difference in how you feel, how your back feels and how fast your abs come back afterwards. That said, I did my pilates religiously with my last pregnancy, but I wish I would have kept up with weight training and cardio as well because I think that would have been helpful too. As for diet, avoiding sugar will go a LONG way towards avoiding unnecessary weight gain, but that is HARD to do while pregnant and hungry!!! Good luck! ~Eileen

Thanks for all of the ideas. I'm going to buy a heart rate monitor this weekend. I did a spinning class on Monday and I was very anxious about where my heart rate was. I hope to be able to stick to the EFL diet with one free day. Thanks, Kris

I have been using Betagen for over 6 weeks now and have seen incredible gains in my muscles. Not only have I gained mass, but as a logical result, I have increased the weights I can lift substantially. Also, as others have said, the HMB helps greatly with soreness.

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (65 posts) at 07:21 AM:
I have been using Betagen for the first time in this challenge (I have completed previous challenges without supplementation) and think it is great. Even though I am only a few weeks in I have definitely packed on more muscle this time around. After an intense upper body session in the gym my muscles feel so pumped up! A few things I will say about it...you need to drink even more water than usual when taking it, and I don't recommend taking it before a cardio as I've found it gives me stomach cramp (but that could be just me).

Just a caution on the "dog debarking" comment. Have some friends who lost a dog after a debarking procedure through blood loss. I'm not entirely sure what happened but something went wrong after the puppy went home and it died on the hurried trip back to the vet's. Investigation showed that vet had done the surgery correctly - just tragic results. I was a little surprised they went the debarking route as this was just a puppy and they hadn't even tried the training route. Looking at my noisy labs now and I just couldn't do the debarking to them ever!

Hello Team 2!!! As far as the bf% goes, soooo many use online calculations but no matter how many sites I input information in, I always get a different #. I have an appt. Thursday to get it done by a trainer at the gym. I had it down a few months ago and I've been using that same % since. Maybe someone else can recommend some other sites to use?? So Sarah, I would ask your gym if they do BF%. The gym I belong to does the electrical impedence test, and in my opinion it is the best and most accurate - of course there are certain guidelines one has to do 24 hrs. prior to the test to get the most accurate reading. It also calculates body hydration and can tell if one is properly hydrated, which will affect the test results. Anyway, if others have opinions on what they do for bf% - please share! Have an AWESOME BFL day!

Well............if men's "favorite parts" got SMALLER whenever they lost weight, there would either be: (1) Only fat guys in the world or (2) A line AROUND THE WORLD to get them enlarged. Everyone has an opinion...but I really don't think it's any worse than getting braces to straighten your teeth.

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (888 posts) at 07:42 AM:
Good luck with the implants. I have breastfed two kids and no matter how you support them....that milk really does a number on boobies! I would personally love to have them lifted (okay with the size, just in the wrong place), but that opportunity hasn't opened for me at this point. I do have a good friend getting some serious plastic surgery done this week. She lost over 130 pounds in the past year and things are all over sagging. She is having a tummy tuck/skin removal and a breast enlargement. She HAS to have the breast implants in order to do anything with the breasts at all. She lost so much weight that there is nothing but skin to lift. This is not a matter of self esteem. Some call it vain, some call it medical....whatever...live with hanging skin and see what you want to do with it. Which, in my opinion, that is what breasts are....hanging skin. If you have the chance to have implants/a lift/a reduction...whatever... and your brain is in the right place (doing it for yourself, not someone else)...then hell....go for it!!!! No amount of BFL or any weight lifting is going to move those puppies into the right place! I have no clue about any of your questions since I have no experience personally. I just wanted to give you a positive feedback!. Good Luck.

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1056 posts) at 07:50 AM:
Just my two cents--if you 'have' to have implants, do your research on picking the right doctor. My sister had hers done by the doc that Halle Berry's and LET ME TELL, my sisters don't look anything like Halle Berrys boobs! They are just horrible. Personally, I wouldn't do it. The health risks alone are enough to keep me away from that. Did you know that breast cancer is extremely hard to detect earlier with breast implants? Natural is the way to go in my book, aesthetically and health wise. Danielle

Body for Life Forum Message by LOVE4KIDS (55 posts) at 08:22 AM:
I just want to add that sometimes just building chest muscles will help lift the sagginess. After my third breastfed child I lost the babyweight by running. My breasts did lose shape quite a bit. I have since had a fourth child (also breastfed) and I am finding that since working the chest muscles along with cardio I am not noticing the sagginess that I had before. I do understand that the bigger breasts one has and the more weight lost will contribute to the amount of extra skin. Also, In defense of Edward I think what he was basically trying to say is that a self confident, natural woman is sexier to him than a pair of not real boobs. Karyn

I suppose out of the two breats you've had the opportunity to touch in your lifetime, one being your mom's, the other being a blow up doll's (we know thats your sister sitting on your lap in your profile), you would naturally choose moms...I mean natural. Afterall...only women with really low self esteem would go for a guy as arrogant as you... Unless of course, she didn't care about size, no matter how itty bitty. Well now...I feel better.

I wouldn't normally impose but you asked for advice. Oops, you asked the ladies but I'll reply anyway. As a guy, I say don't get implants for two reasons: 1) Natural is better regardless of size 2) Getting implants implies you are a weak person with low self esteem. Good luck in whatever you decide.

now that isnt fair! if you gave birth, and wanted to give your baby the best nutrition possible and your penis shrunk and shriveled up, woudlnt YOU want to fix it too?

it has nothing to do with being a 'weak person with a low self esteem', it has to do with fixing a problem that was caused by something beyond yoru control. there is nothing wrong with wanting to look "normal" (thats why i would go under the muscle..looks more natural that on top)..

i do NOT have implants, i do not want them.i do however want the girls pointing back in teh right direction! after having and nursing 3 babies (still nursing my 3rd..hes 6mos) and seeing how it has affected my body, i will definitely have it done.

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (27 posts) at 01:23 PM:
if they are rock hard, it sometimes is due to scarring, or even hardening of the implant. there are new implants now, "gummybear implants"..they are made like a gummy bear....soft but they dont leak. you could cut it in half and it still wouldnt leak. rather new in teh US but pretty common in other countries.

OK, another guy's point of view. The implants I'm familiar with are in a woman who has an extremely high degree of self-esteem. She does not strive for Playboy-esque measurements. Her measurements are quite normal. I was consulted about this decision but it was not my decision to make. I was sort of against it, but I support her 100%. For her, it was just the final "icing on the cake" after getting her body back in shape. They are not hard, quite soft actually. Absolutely find the right doctor if this is the decision to make for yourself. Tom

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a man who prefers augmented breasts to natural...however..the topic of conversation here was not one of preference. The topic here is a woman seeking personal advise from other women. Perhaps Edward should open a thread of his own to voice his opinion of women and breasts.

Wow, what a response you have gotten! I have had implants for 2yrs and I love them! I lost a lot of weight (no babies) and my boobs virtually deflated and I had saggy little granny boobs! I got mine over the muscle and I think they look very real. I have never had anybody think otherwise. My piece of advice is to really look at your own body proportions BEFORE you get them and what size you want to be ultimately. My dr wouldnt give me an exact size I would be and just made me pick how many cc's I wanted the implant filled to. I was hoping for a full C cup and got a small/med D cup with 365cc's in each. At first I was freaked out but once all the swelling went down all has been great:) Alot of women go waaayyy too big and look like they are going to topple over! Also, just because you get implants does not mean you desire to be playboy-esque or have low self esteem...but hey I understand that there are some men and women that cant understand what happens when someone loses a drastic amount of weight or just wants to enhance what God gave them. I know I am rambling now so I will stop! Crystal

You need to read the posts more carefully. I don't think anyone here is harping on Edward for his preferences. They (we) are harping on him for 1) an unsolicited opinion that is, for all intents and purposes, off-topic and 2) the judgemental and inappropriate way he communicated said opinion. To be honest, I've been well-endowed since 4th grade so I'm not really fussed about getting a bit flat right now - in fact I'm reveling in it. So I guess in terns of my own preference I do align with Edward. But for the above stated reason, sorry; I will cut him no slack.

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (884 posts) at 03:57 PM:
Breast implants are a very personal decision, a decision that each person makes based on what they have seen/experienced in their life. For me, I have seen tons and tons of implants (I worked in a strip club at one point in my life) and I have never seen a pair I really liked. Especially after being in for a number of years...they start to sag, ripple, etc. and many of the girls who had them done were back under the knife within about 10 years to either replace the implants, have them removed, or just to fix the sagging. I've felt silicone and saline, both under and over the muscle. The ones under the muscle all looked much more natural than those placed over the muscle, but the girls did say it hindered some of their chest workouts some. Also, my biggest concern would be how difficult it is to see small lumps in mammograms with the implants. It's difficult to nearly impossible. For that reason alone, I would never consider them. That being said, it's to each his own. I used to think it was a self esteem issue but after seeing several friends get them, I realize that every woman who has implants gets them for all different reasons. Most of the strippers I worked with had them to increase their annual salary and they paid off BIG time. One girl got them while I was working there...she went from about $400/night to well over $1000/night. Sad, but true. I've also seen some of the damage implants can cause first hand. We've had several very ill patients in the ICU from suspected reactions to their implants. That's the thing...you won't know if you are one of the unlucky patients whose body does not accept the implants until they are actually in. And on the lighter side...we've had 2 older ladies (late 60's) with implants. I'm not going to lie..it was quite humorous...everything else on them was rather loose, but not their breasts! Do your research...spend as much time as you can researching MD's and above all, don't skimp! If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is....spend as much money as you can afford for this. After all, someone is going to cut you open and insert a foreign object in your body. If you have to travel to a different city for a top notch surgeon, then do it. Do you know that most women spend more time researching new cars than they do plastic surgery? Scary. Melanie = )

I understand the unsolicited nature of Edward's remark and that it was not communicated in the best way nor in the right place. And I fully understand there are different reasons for people to get breast implants and cast absolutely no judgement on anyone who gets them for ANY reason. Honestly, I responded rather impulsively. I just have a pet peeve with men that drool over these women with supposedly "perfect" bodies that are really just anorexics with boob jobs, and I'm annoyed that society has gotten to the point where 16-year-olds who look just fine feel that they have to get implants to be beautiful. Obviously none of this is related to the original question posed, as you said, so sorry for my knee-jerk response - I certainly didn't intend to criticize Gettintoned AT ALL or imply that SHE has low self-esteem or trying to look like a Playboy model. Goodness, not at all. I just get tired of unnatural expectations being placed on women based on some male fantasy, so perhaps I prematurely rushed to Edward's defense. (Oh my gosh! I was right...and I got flamed big time! I say things as I see them. I don't take the popular or easy route and I certainly don't take offense to the personal attacks against me. I don't know of anyone that has a problem with reconstructive surgery. Getting a boob job to fix your boobs to pre-breast feeding levels is certainly considered reconstructive...because you're fixing them to how they were. And even though I am a stubborn male, and a Taurus, I will admit that I should have been more clear about that and I apologize. As for cosmetic surgery, I personally feel that in a perfect world people wouldn't care what others thought about their (insert problem area here). Have a great BFL day all. :) Edward xoxoxo

Does anyone here get this shot. I just got mine on Mon evening and ever since I'm STARVING! I feel like what I normally eat is not enough. Then this morning I felt a little cramppy which is odd, becuase I normally don't have a period because of the shot. I don't know what's going on, but I don't know how much longer I can hold off. FEED ME SEYMORE! Melissa

I got that shot years ago. It isn't very nice, much too strong. The doctor even told me it is really for sexually active teenage girls who can't be trusted to take the pill. I wasn't happy will it and never got it again.

I have never taken the shot but I just wanted to say that when I was in nursing school I had to do a rotation at a ob/gyn office and follow the MD around for a day. She told me that she has never seen any birth control cause as much weight gain as the Depo shot does. I have also seen it first hand with my nieces. They have each gained about 20 lbs each and they were always thin girls . Since you are saying that you are really hungry I am wondering if increase appetite may be a side effect that causes the weight gain. Karyn

OK, I guess I am the only one who likes the darn thing, and I am not getting now bc I dont have insurance :( My experience was spotting for about 2 mos and then my period went away totally. I didnt have problems with hunger..... at least not that I recognised to be related. But I think each birth control method is different for everyone. Oh yeah, I DIDNT gain weight on depo. I gained a TON on the ORTHO pill.

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (57 posts) at 09:31 AM:
I LOVED the depo shot!! It was fabulous! ALthough not as fabulous and my hubby getting snipped and not having to take anything..that was EVEN BETTER! LOL! The only down side and I did research on this..is that it stimulates that part of your brain that sends hunger signals so you FEEL hungry even though your body isn't. Thus..the 20 lb avg weight gain..ugh! BUT this is what my doctor told me and it did help a lot. You can drink lots of water, break a couple of the snacks during the day into super mini snacks (like 100 calories every hour between meals when you need it) to keep yourself from feeling hungry and if you find yourself having to eat more, then add a little extra cardio. That seemed to work for me anyway. Your body does adjust to the hunger feelings so they aren't permanent but it can take awhile.

Hey--I've heard the same thing about the Depo shot; for those of you interested in "the (BC*) Patch", I tried it a year ago because it appeared to be easier than remembering to take a BCP every day... and I gained 10-12 pounds within the first month. Not actually a bad thing, because of that I'm on BFL, have lost the 10 plus 3 more and looking at losing still 13 pounds during the last six weeks of this challenge!

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (181 posts) at 09:46 AM:
Hey ladies, if you are looking into the Depo shot do your research. Some do extremely well on it while others (including myself) dont. The first shot was fine for the first month them WHAM exactly 30days later I had the worst period of my life lasting 14days. I was so cramped up my mom took me to the hospital thinking I couldve been having ovary/uterus problems. I wasnt even sexually active, only wanted to rid myself of those pesky periods! Needless to say I tried it for 1 more shot and spotted the entire 3 months and switched to SEASONALE. This is by far the best EVER! I only have my period once every 3months and they only last 4days and are the lightest ever! As you can see I really like this and reccomend it to all who are looking for a change in BC. HOpe i have helped after all of this blabbing!! Crystal

Nope to the patches. I tried the pill. It made me crazy ;) I have an IUD now. It has helped me with super heavy periods. I pretty much just have light nearly non existent things. Compared to the heavy where I had to change every hour or more. I have only had the IUD for about 8 months, but no problems. I personally wanted to avoid things that messed with my hormones too much. The IUD does a little, but for me, not too much. T

Though, I am one who can not take any B/C because it makes me have weight gain/ crazy/ unhappy. Even my husband agrees that B/C is out of the question after he witnessed me on it.

I had a series of 3 (9 months) Shots back in 1998...I spotted for about 6 months Solid...and then My period Stopped after my last of the 3...After 2 years without a period my DR decided to Try Regulating me Chemicaly, with birth control...which worked while I was taking it..but as soon as I stopped the Birth control Again no period..for about 2 more years. I finaly started getting my period regularly back in 2004..6 years after ending my shots, and after loosing about 30 Pounds on Body for life. WOW! That's a lot of info. Thank you all so much. I welcome any and all rants about the subject. After I had my baby (15 months ago) they gave me Depo before I even left the hospital. During that first month I HATED it and told my Dr. After talking to her about my options I decided to give it another shot and have been on it ever since. I'm one of the few lucky ones...normally. Today I feel like I have all the PMS symptoms without the "M". I never noticed the increased hunger before, but I wasn't really monitoring my eating then. Then I gave blood today and I ate 4 freekin donut holes and 2 cookies and a bag of pretzels. Needless to say I thought I was going to throw-up. UGH, hopefully what ever is going on passes soon. I've got to weigh-in in a few days. Oh well, thanks all Melissa

I used to get the shot, then tried the patches after reading up more on Depo (don't care for all the side effects related to it), and now I'm on the ring. Love that thing! It stays in a month, neither you nor your partner can feel it, it takes seconds to change out (about as difficult as inserting a tampon) and I love that the hormones are going directly where I need it instead of having to travel through my system. I had the DEPO shot ONCE- and that was more than enough. I gained more weight in the 6 weeks FOLLOWING the shot (30 lbs!) than I did during the entire pregnancy! It was awful. Adding RAVENOUS HUNGER to POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION was a horrific combination. AS Big Bull and our number one son (OBJECTIONA Bull) were traveling on a summer baseball team, I spent alot of time alone with a newborn and a jealous 5 year old daughter (INCOMPATA Bull) It was not pretty. While I had never liked peanut butter cookies before, I developed an absolute addiction to them. I was a one pack a day smoker.. I mean eater. Grosses me out to think of it now. I believe to this day that they had medicinal purposes-- dulling my senses and lulling me into la la land. When I woke up I was fatter than when I had delivered the baby. Ok, I went off the diet for some stupid reason. Anyway, I can't seem to find the formula. The one that says you take your body weight, then either divide it or multiply it by something and that tells you how many calories you should be eating a day. then you take that number and divide it by the six meals and break that down by the carbs etc. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (888 posts) at 07:25 AM:
I don't know the formula, but I have used the calculator on the BFL website. It will tell you the total calories and then further breaks down the protein and carb grams....which is just hte 40/40/20 mix. I hope that helps.

Body for Life Forum Message by HeyJami (6 posts) at 05:10 PM:

Thread: Cheese (118 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (888 posts) at 07:51 AM: Cheese
How much cheese do you all eat in one day? Anyone limit their consumtion to a few ounces because of fat? I typically have 2 ounces of cheese with an apple as meal 1. However, this week I made some recipes from the EFL cookbook and one has a good amount of cheese (the chili rellanoes--spelling?--peppers, egg beaters, cheese). Per serving, I believe this recipe only has about 1-2 ounces. My question is about eating both of these meals in the same day since they are "heavy" on the cheese. The cheese is the reduced fat mozarella. any opinions?

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (532 posts) at 08:37 AM:
I LOVE cheese, usually I eat it every day. I found fat free string cheese at my grocery store, but I also use mozzerella and provelone bc they are lower in fat than cheddar (which is my fave) Just note that I don't think its on the original authorized food list. I eliminate it when I hit a plateau.

Body for Life Forum Message by Emeril (21 posts) at 08:52 AM:
I love cheese. Love it! But...it is one of the things that got me where I am today, and that is...fat. For me, personally, I don't eat any unless it is a free day. Even the lowfat stuff has a pretty high fat content. Lowfat cottage cheese, on the other hand, I probably eat 1/2 -3/4 cup per day.

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (888 posts) at 08:54 AM:

I was thrilled when I started this program and string cheese was on the shopping list on the BFL site!!! Cheeeeeeeeese!!!!! But then I quickly saw that even fat free string cheese is something I can't have in the house - too tempting to eat just 7 or 8 and then skip a couple of meals to "balance" it out. SO now I don't have any cheese in the house at all.

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (888 posts) at 03:16 PM:
I understand that. Pasta is the kicker for me. Even whole wheat and the Barilla Plus. I have to make sure to make only one portion or measure ONE portion and step away... but the cheese, when packaged in 1 ounce servings, I am good at. I am just confused....to eat it or not? The low fat variety!

Body for Life Forum Message by brandy (11 posts) at 04:12 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1287 posts) at 09:54 AM: Here are some Health BFL Friendly Recipes!
Here are some recipes I have come up with lately. You can add a carb like Fruit with the salad or a piece of WW Toast or tortilla with the eggs if you like. I do not eat them with those but you certainly can! ;-) Enjoy! P.S. If you are Guy just increase the protein amounts to your needs. You know how much you need of those items ;-) Just increase it to your specific needs. ;-) Faux Egg McMuffin (My cheat day mmm treat) 1 English Muffin 1 Whole Egg 1 Egg White 1/2 slice of FF or 2% cheese of your choice 1-2 pieces of 98% LEAN Ham (Depending on size of ham) A few sprays of Spray Butter Toast English Muffin. Then spray a coffee mug with Pam and mix eggs in coffee mug. Microwave eggs for about 1 min and 30 seconds. Or whichever that is necessary. (The reason for the coffee mug is it makes the eggs form in a round formation you can cook them stove top if you want as well. This was is easiest and quickest for me.) After eggs are done put 1/2 pc. of cheese on top of the ham ( I usually cut the ham to size of English Muffin) and Microwave until cheese is slightly melted. Lightly spray toasted English Muffin with Spray Butter. Then put it all together to make a yummy, healthy alternative to the breakfast sandwich we all know as the Egg McMuffin. Lime & Dill Tuna with MIxed Greens 1 can of Albacore Tuna in Water 1 lime 2 tbs or more of Dill Weed Seasoning 2 c. or more of Mixed Baby Greens Drain the water out of the tuna and put into a separate bowl. Take 1 lime cut in 1/2 and squeeze both halves all over the tuna & mix. Then Put the 2 tbs. of Dill Weed over the tuna and mix again. In another bowl put your Mixed Greens into that then top with Tuna. Enjoy! You don't even need any dressing! This is esp. great if Tuna has worn out it's welcome. Green Eggs & Salsa 1/2 Avocado 5 egg whites 2-3 tbs. of Salsa Scramble egg whites until ready. Put eggs into a bowl and top with 1/2 avocado sliced up. Then top with salsa and mix up. This is one of my favorites. Looks weird but it is sooooooo good! Try it. You can also use a WW Tortilla is you want too and make a breakfast taco. I don't because I am not allowed too... this is one of my favorite evening meals. Mmmmm!

Keep yolk runny, and pour cooked eggs over cooked oatmeal. Sprinkle tamari and seasoning to taste. Mash up and enjoy. This is now my favorite meal. This week.

Body for Life Forum Message by Crispywafers (5 posts) at 07:47 AM: Feel like a dumbell hog...
Hi all... Just wondering if I'm breaking some gym ediquette here. I belong to a gym and although they have maybe two or three sets of each dumbell...I feel a bit wrong grabbing all my dumbells (normally three sets of different weight) and taking all of them over to the bench. I also feel bad cause there is only one bench in the room... the rest of the benches are attached to actual machines. So I"m a bench hog too for the 40 minutes... Any thoughts? I'm new to the gym in general and am just wondering if I'm breaking rules here doing the BFL program at the gym.

Body for Life Forum Message by ReenieC (163 posts) at 05:59 PM:
omg...i would love to see some responses to this dilemma...just last night I had a 'situation' at the gym. I also take what I need in DB's and bring to a bench. It's so much easier to have all your weights there and ready instead of walking back and forth. But, at my gym there is at least two, maybe three, sets of each weight, plus about 5 weight benches. Anyway, a trainer was with a client and apparently all the lower DB's were being used...and I could swear I overheard them say something along the lines of hoarding weights...I don't know if they were talking about me or not so, I made a joke and started putting some DB's back. (I was just about finished w/my UBWO anyway) So, what's your thoughts on this; does anyone else come across this situation? Do you feel guilty about taking weights you need???

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (92 posts) at 06:28 PM:
I don't feel guilty about using any weights, but I just take one set at a time. I use the 1 minute rest to return weight and grab the next set that I need. Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!! Suzanne

Body for Life Forum Message by jamber (989 posts) at 06:32 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (61 posts) at 06:45 PM:
I have to admit I would be annoyed with you if you went to my gym. I never take all of my dumbells to the bench at one time - what is the point? During the time that you are not using them someone else could be using it. I use my rest time to to get the new dumbells. I also do some things standing so I can alternate and am not on the bench for the 40 minutes.

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (181 posts) at 07:09 PM:
I would definitely be annoyed...I only take one at a time even though my gym has at least 3 dif sets. I use the one min rest period to go get the weights I need. I think this is just courtesy to anyone else who would also like to work out. With the bench thing I think you are ok unless someone is waiting on you and if they are then maybe you should ask they want to work thier sets in between yours and I also do half of my stuff standing as well. Im gunna be the b*tch here...sorry but Im honest: If I went to the same gym as you...you would probably hate me becuz I would HAFTA say something. (Im not tryin to be mean, its just something that p*sses me off) I do like most of the others, take one set at a time and switch 'um out during the 1 min rest period. As for the bench, I sometimes use a bench thats attached to a machine if ones not available. Is that possible? (Ive also used a swiss ball as a bench replacement -very good workout)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (730 posts) at 08:11 PM:
Hmmm. My gym is well-equipped. The free weight section has like 6 or 7 adjustable benches, 2 or 3 sets of dumbells from 20 pounds to super-human-strength pounds, and 4 stacks of dumbells from 5 to 20 pounds. As long as there are at least 3 benches free, I feel totally fine with claiming a bench as my "own" for my session. The other night I was doing super sets, so to do it right - no rest between exercises - I felt I really needed to have the dumbells available to me at "my" bench. When I'm not zoning in my reps, I get totally aware of what's going on around me and make sure I'm not interrupting anyone else's experience. Most folks are pretty cooperative, although at times I've seen guys leave their dumbells at a bench and walk away (now THAT annoys me!!). Anyway, the other night that I had everything close to "my" bench, one of the guys looked over and exclaimed, "Look at her! She's going for the GOLD!" That was pretty cool.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (730 posts) at 08:18 PM:
I'm being rude! I didn't answer your question... If I were you, see if - between sets - you can read the room around you to sense whether someone's waiting to work in with you. Even if not, in between exercises, get up off of that bench, take your journal, towel, and water bottle with you, and move around the room for your time between sets. Give others a chance to get their time on the bench. If they don't grab it, then do your next set and repeat. Once you've established a routine at your new gym, you'll start to recognize other regulars and get some understanding of their workout routines too - and whether you need to be sharing a LOT or sharing just a little.

Body for Life Forum Message by Crispywafers (5 posts) at 08:26 PM:
Thanks all for the advice. I really was just looking for some guidance on how others handle this - last thing I want to do is annoy others around me! I will take one dumbell set at a time and incorporate standing exercises to give the bench a break just incase someone is waiting in the wings for it. Thanks again!

Body for Life Forum Message by fjcastro (10 posts) at 08:37 PM:
I would be pretty annoyed. It takes just a few seconds to walk to the rack to get the next weight so why not do that during your "rest period". If there are 3 sets of each weight chances are the one you will want at a particular time will be available. It would almost be like putting a towel on 3 or 4 different weight machines to "hold them" because you were going to use them "next."

lol..i could have posted this! i would definitely say something too. i live ina little town with one little gym in teh whole town. so of couse, the weights and machines are very limited as well. we all take turns with them. if that means i do one set of incline flies with the dumbbells, i will go and do a set of flies on the fly machine, just so im not hogging them.

my personal opinion about "why" one should do a colon cleanse is this: we spend years of putting foods and chemicals into our bodies without a care in the world. we eat our standard american diets (sad) and feel happy with our food choices but some of the processed foods out there are wreaking havoc on our bodies. we get fat quicker, we have bad skin, bad hair, get diseases, and noone wants to look at the food we eat as the culprit. is it convience? laziness? why are we so hesitant to take care of ourselves? (know i am speaking of the general population, obviously we are all taking that step to become the healthiest we can be if we are doing bfl!) its just what i think, but all the preservatives and red dye number 1200000000000, can't be good for us. if anyone has read the makers diet, the author says that people tend to think that our bodies have evolved to our way of eating (fast food, and things with a shelf life of 50 years), but in reality, our internal and genetic makeup is no different than our ancestors, and they certainly had no fake sugar or butter flavoring on their food! soooo, to my point. i am eating the healthiest diet i can possibly eat right now and really just want to get the years of buildup from the sad food i have eaten out of my system! and rie you are so right about the level of confidence. somehow from doing the cc, i feel like i have control over that and its going over to bfl too! alexis

I didn't take it yet though cuz I was afraid it would screw up my workout this morning. I will take it tonight and see what happens. I'm a little concerned about the Senna but if I use it only a few times it shouldn't be a problem.

Body for Life Forum Message by leankat (24 posts) at 10:41 AM:
Good morning to all the bowel fixated BFLers! I too, have purchased the colonix packet. My 17 year old son saw it and exclaimed "I need colon cleansing too!" That is probably a little too much information about my family, but seriously, I am excited. I started the program yesterday. I have been very busy this morning, but things are settling down. My intestinal history includes irritable bowel since childhood (and a colicky infant) and I have many food sensitivites, like milk products, wheat, oats, soy, etc. I even had a colonsocopy last year to check for celiac disease, but it was negative. Sooo, I am hoping that the cleansing will help sooth my system and improve absorption of nutrients. Also, I am tired of feeling bloated all the time. I eat a really balanced diet over all, but imbibe a little too often in caffeine and alcohol. I'm working on those two as well. Happy to join the poop thread, I'll keep you posted as to how it all comes out!!!! Kathy

Thank you all so much for your touching, supportive and inspiring replies... I've been quite wiped-out so I'm a little slow in responding. It hit me how truly great are my friends here. My former friends never came close to being as supportive, understanding and wise as you are... Yep! I was hanging out with the wrong people!!! I want to emphasize that I'm still a happy camper and that frankly setbacks like this have been common over the last 10 years I've been coping with pituitary failure. The big difference is that I'm no longer keeping it to myself. I don't want my friends and family to feel sorry for me but when I don't let them know when I'm having serious illness issues they tend to be consumed with worry... Has Jim changed as a person? Is he no longer interested in working out? Is he depressed? And so on... So often over the years I've been tempted to just go away until I'm well...I just don't want to drag people down by updating them with another "Yeah...I'm still sick...and it's not getting better..." conversation. But that creates even more of a sense of isolation than is already created by having a chronic illness and of course, it causes those who care about me to feel separate from me as well... My hope is that by sharing my struggles it will inspire others and also help the general public to better understand what people with chronic illness have to cope with day-by-day. But it's not about sympathy or pity but simply dignity and respect... I can see that my post might lead to an incomplete idea of my current emotional and mental state because I only expressed the negative stuff... I still am quite jazzed about other aspects of my life (i.e. new computer setup, hooking up my iPod to my stereo...) BTW -- I should have results from my lab tests in a few days and get an idea of where my hormone levels are. Thanks again gang...you've helped me more than I can say... Jim

Body for Life Forum Message by Crispywafers (5 posts) at 11:43 AM:
It seems to depend. Alot of people have problems with this for body fat measurement calculations because different calculations use different waist spots (belly button, narrowest point, widest point, etc.). Just pick a spot you know you will always be able to find again (belly button for many) or pick your widest point if thats what you want to track shrinking. :O) Good luck!

I measure my hips straight across my hip bone, on the flat part just under the tip of the bone, all the way around...any farther down and it would be a butt measurement, not hips.

I no longer follow any one program to the letter. I believe reading both BFL and BFFM enabled me to really understand the basics, and the fine details of what it takes to cut fat , and build muscle mass. So now, being very in-tune with how my body reacts to nutrition and exercise, I do continue to read other publications, opinions, and such. I don't want to feel like I have to committ to anything with religious zeal, other than a healthy lifestyle. The experimenting and variety of trying different things is interesting and exciting for me. With that said, purchasing both books was well worth the money. JS

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (57 posts) at 07:34 AM:
I thought the BFFM was interesting but im not much on crunching numbers and spending my entire day figuring out percentages and keeping records of calories..etc. Although an interesting read I found the BFFM book repetitive and the extra info not all that helpful after having read BFL I didn't think I needed all that info..but thats just me. Someone who is more interested in the science of everything and who likes logging and plugging numers (personally gives me a headache..LOL) might enjoy reading it. It did seem to knock BLF in a back handed sort of way and that really irritated me becuase I feel like BFL is working so well for me and is not really different from his program, his is just more complicated. I felt like he could have taken those 3oo and some pages and condensed it to about 30 pages with all the repetitiveness in there, needs a good editor LOL! JMHO (just my honest opnion :)

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1144 posts) at 07:50 AM:

I absolutely love Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. It has allowed me to make better choices in my foods and able to ascertain which carb, protein and fats are better than others. I have 55 lbs to lose, so the sooner I can achieve that with the BFL program, the better. There is a whole lot more information available in that book, however, I take from it what I want. Perhaps once I redefine my next set of goals, I will go back and read more. But the information I feel is great. It may not appeal to the person who just wants a very simple approach, which is why BFL design is so great - it was written in such a manner to appeal to the masses. You can go to www.burnthefat.com to read more about it. Jeannine

Going to do something a little different today. Instead of a motivational quote, how about a motivational question. There is great power in questions, if we will ask questions that seek positive answers. So, here is today's question from motivational speaker Anthony Robbins... How am I going to live today in order to create the tomorrow I'm committed to?

I'm the #1 Obsessed BFL'er hee hee! I want to ask you guys if you've noticed a couple of things when you're shedding fat: 1. I noticed if I pee a lot all night, the next day, lo and behold - I am skinnier! Happened the other day - peed 3 times, the last at 5:30 am, for like a minute, and then ooooeeeeee dropped another pound and an other 1/2 inch! 2. Does your face get flushed and do you feel hot when you're shedding fat? It feels like I'm burning the fat off. 3. Do you notice a funny taste in your mouth and general smell about you? I can't describe it, kinda fruity...wonder if this is a byproduct of burning fat. 4. I constantly am touching myself around the areas I'm getting smaller - namely, my "hip puffs" (love handles) and tummy. It feels sooo coool when things feel different - smaller!! 5. Are you constantly trying on your old 'skinny clothes' to see your progress? I am absolutely over the moon excited because I fit into my "skinny jeans" yesterday. wooooeeee!! 6. This is really bad - do you look at other people and think, 'ooohh they need BFL, they could really shape that butt' or lose that fat? If only they knew the secret! I have to really watch myself to not prosyltize (spelling) or evanglize!!!!! hee hee

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (92 posts) at 07:23 AM:
Doidle, the one comment I have is about you smelling "fruity." Are you sure you aren't eating too much protein and not enough carbohydrates? A fruity smell can be that of ketosis, which is not a good thing. Also, can be a sign of Diabetes. Check out your portions and make sure you are getting adequate supply of carbs. Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!! Suzanne

Body for Life Forum Message by doidle (17 posts) at 07:57 AM: Re: Come on, let's obsess together!
I thought about that...I definately am getting enough carbs, I eat them at every meal...oatmeal every morning, bread with my sandwiches, beans with a lot of my meals, pears, apples, cheese, milk, popcorn,... so does anyone else notice this? I DID also have this when I was on Phase I of South Beach diet, with no carbs. Maybe I should up my carbs?

Thread: Change up your exercises! (98 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (329 posts) at 08:13 AM: Change up your exercises!
Wow! I forgot how great it feels to change up my exercises after 4 weeks of consistently working out hard. This is week 5 for me, and yesterday I did my first UBWO with different exercises than I'd been doing the last 4 weeks, and MAN am I feeling those muscles today! I'm not sore like I was after the first workout, but sore nonetheless. It can be as easy as making small changes, incline instead of flat, dumbbells instead of barbell, etc. For example, the first 4 weeks I was doing bench presses with the barbell. Yesterday I did them with dumbbells, and it was enough of a difference that I am really feeling it! I switched my bicep curls from dumbbells to cables. For shoulders I switched from dumbbell presses to front raises. If you haven't switched up your exercises in some way and it's been more than 4 weeks... do it! You'll be glad you did! I feel so much stronger now, and the muscles in my arms surprised me in the shower this morning, LOL!

Ohhh, I'm a little scared....... have my first changed-up LBWO today, and I'm switching to squats and walking lunges. It makes me nervous cuz I am gonna be one sore mama!! ITs OK though, I knda like it!! :)

I am obviously going to have to go back and read the BFL book again. I am following the program to a "T" for my next challenge (February 13th). The only reason why it is going to be difficult this time around is I will feel like I am not doing enough. For those of you on here that know me you will understand my position. For the newer posters that don't know me, well I guess this won't make sense. I am doing a "To a T for Julie" challenge and I still plan on blowing this place up with energy and motivation . . . and obviously with some kick-ass pictures. Stay tuned b/c Buckeye Boy is going to be back with a vengeance!

Hi I just wanted to know if anyone took creatine who's primary goal was fat loss. If so, how long did it take for you to see changes? I've been taking it for 4 weeks (C1W4D3) and I have not lost a pound yet. I'm wondering if I should cycle off of it. (Note, I did not load on creatine. I take 5 g mixed in water everyday except free days).

Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (346 posts) at 11:21 AM:
My primary goal was to lose fat, not only did I lose fat but I packed on a few pounds of muscle. I would take the full dose on your weight training days and only half a dose on your cardio days and see how that works.

Seems like I'm better at giving advice than following it sometimes. I just started a new job last week and the hours have been long. That and the fact that I have a 4 mo old puppy who takes up a lot of my time has caused me to fall off the wagon. I haven't been to the gym for a week, and even though I haven't been too bad with the food, it's gotten me really down. I can feel my energy levels dropping. I know I need to get back on the horse, but mentally I'm having a tough time of it. Thank goodness for all the great people on the tracker who help keep my mind on BFL even when I'm not in the mood. Chris

I know exactly how ya feel-----I'm right there with ya. Had a lot of stress inducing issues lately-----didn't get to the gym for 5 days----got tired of making excuses and went after work yesterday for cardio.

I'm in the same boat, but mine is because I have moved into a new house. So I have not been able yet to set up my wieghts in the garage since it's being used for storage right now. But I have been doing some cardio and it makes me feel a little better but I'm afraid that my muscle gain is going to be minimal this challenge.

Hey guys, I love having this group to come to. I think of you guys often. THANKS I've been sick for two days, and my father in law is dying, and my BFL is falling apart. For the first three weeks, I wasn't hungry, I was motivated, and had LOTS of energy. I fell off the wagon Friday thru Tuesday, and now I can't get back on. I'm starving, craving bad stuff, and could sleep 24/7. Has anyone else experienced a slump and could give me some advice. I refuse to quit...but I want back the NATURAL HIGH! Thanks again

Body for Life Forum Message by Rie (546 posts) at 01:28 PM:
I've done it, do it and will do it again...It's hard to keep your motivation week after week...you need to get back into the zone that made you want to start in the first place...for me, its certain songs, things I see on TV, pictures I look at...you know how they say the quickest way to get over a broken heart is to just completely wallow in the memories, pictures etc, until your just sick of being broken up? For me, I wallow in all the things that made me sick of being fat...for example, any Van Halen video, and a few cuts from any 80's album ( when I was young and thin) will snap me RIGHT out of it and back on track-lol Im sorry about you FIL...thats a tough one...butyou know he would want you to be strong, fit and happy-- Works for me...might work for you!

Body for Life Forum Message by tgantt (25 posts) at 01:37 PM:
thanks, Rie, you are always there. I'm going to dive into the skinny things, and get my MOTIVATION BACK!!

Plus, I look at old photos of a skinnier me and go into my closeta nd look at favorite pieces of clothing that I can't wear anymore. Best of luck, I know you can make it through these tough times!

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1164 posts) at 05:05 PM:
You can, in my experience only recapture or regain motivation one day at a time. Meaning, do the right thing today, even if you do not feel like it, and then again tomorrow... etc. Soon you will be right back into the thick of it:) Yours in Health, Kerry

... and then focus on just the next meal or the next workout. You can't complete all 12 weeks worth of workouts or meals in one day. One thing at a time. I'm very sorry to hear about your father-in-law.

Body for Life Forum Message by Gtnskinee (47 posts) at 09:19 PM:
So sorry to hear about your father-in-law. You have a lot going on right now and it will be hard to stay focused. Just take it one day at a time. Try to plan your meals for the next day the night before so that you don't have to wonder what you'll eat from one meal to the next. Try to keep eating as regular as possible and it will definitely curb the hunger your feeling. I was there last week (week 8 of my challenge) and was just plain bummed out. Everything is better this week and I am refocused. It happens to all of us. HANG IN THERE!!! Kathy
