1/2 cup cooked is a 15 gram carb serving....not necessarily your serving of carbs on BFL. Guess it just depends on how many carbs/meal you are eating. If you are only doing 15g of carbs/meal then I guess 1/2 cup cooked is okay. Like I said earlier, I used to eat 1/2 cup uncooked which turns out to be 1 cup cooked and approximately 30 g (27 if you look at the box)of carbs.

I dont ever remember my belly fat being hard. It's always been squishy. I remember I would (and occasionally still do) just reach down and grab that belly pooch and and flop it around. Even when I got down to 19% bf...I still had it. When does it go away? Will it ever? Being in the med prof, I know we as women have more fat around our lower abs for pregnancy cushioning, etc. Well, I AINT pregnant, so I DONT WANT IT!! Now, GO AWAY!!!! LOL Someone help me!!! HAHA

I am following the diet to a T, EXCEPT for some chocolate that I can't give up. Can't. I mean I am physically having a hard time!! What the heck?! Has anyone gone through this? I need help! thanks. ;) J

Body for Life Forum Message by SuzyQ (39 posts) at 01:48 PM:
I have chocolate cravings too. I usually keep a steady supply of chocolate shakes on hand and sometimes have raisin toast in the morning with my eggs instead of whole wheat. Also, the Zone Bars for a snack help every once in a while. I know the raisin toast and zone bars are on the "list" but I am in this for the long haul and they are better choices than a chocolate donut or candy bar.... Hope that helps! You are not alone, trust me!

Body for Life Forum Message by FitGirl86 (14 posts) at 01:57 PM:
Thanks for the reply. I wrote down those suggestions. I am just afraid that I won't see ANY results at all if I keep this up! ugh.

Body for Life Forum Message by keaton7655 (23 posts) at 02:11 PM:
Suzy Q does exactly what I do. As a snack I do a chocolate protein shake (protein) and a Zone bar (protein & carb) and boy does that cure the cravings. Sometime, like today actually, it can be too much, but still better than the real thing! Good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by kitwhit (104 posts) at 03:40 PM:
I am solucky - I have no cravings for sweets at all. In fact this week I packed up a sweetie care package to send the long distance boyfriend for V-D and put in a whole bag of dove chocolate hearts and not once was I tempted to cave and have one. Nope. I'm a salt and carb junkie. What I crave is white rice (as in sushi) and saltines. I'm a freak.

Body for Life Forum Message by FitGirl86 (14 posts) at 04:38 PM:
Well, cravings are cravings. haha. I just wish I didn't beat myself up over caving in. I always feel like a failure.

Hi guys, I was doing my week 0 body fat and I was wondering - if you dont mind me asking- where you take your chest measurement if you are using the mybodycomp website. It says just above your nipples - but is this accurate for girls? Boobs come in all sizes! Or do you measure under the armpits as high as you can? Thanks for any responses!

Body for Life Forum Message by blessedgirl (22 posts) at 11:35 PM:
hmmmm....I never considered it being different that way. I measure just like they say. Just make sure you do it the same every time so you can see your progress. ;)

Thread: who takes betagen? (311 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (395 posts) at 07:23 PM:
The creatine in Betagen helps with cell oxidation, has anti-inflammatory benefits, helps with brain functionality for improved memory retention and reduces mental fatigue; more research is starting to reveal how it also helps as a theurapeutic agent in neurological diseases and helps increase muscle energy and metabolism. Love it and take it along w/ CLA and Flaxseed oil.

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (53 posts) at 08:07 PM:
whats teh difference between betagen and phosphagen?

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (395 posts) at 09:12 PM:
Not a great deal Minka but Betagen has Phosphagen in it. The added ingredient that Betagen has over Phosphagen is HMB (B-hydroxy B-methylbutyrate monohydrate). So it appears to me they are combining those two supplements into one. HMB is the metabolite of the amino acid leucine. Leucine helps with the regulation of blood-sugar levels, the growth and repair of muscle tissue (such as bones, skin and muscles), growth hormone production, wound healing as well as energy regulation. It can assist to prevent the breakdown of muscle proteins that sometimes occur after trauma or severe stress.

I'm new here but I have a suggestion for you. I used the myoplex drinks and they do taste good I think there are too many carbs etc. I went into max muscle and tried their High 5 protein powder. It runs around 39.00us for 3 lbs. It comes in Cappucino, Chocolate, Orange,Pineapple,Banana, Vanilla. (Orange is my favorite.) It has 43 servings @ grams of Protein per serving Each serving has 1 gram of fat and only 1 carb. In the store near me, if you buy two, you get 10.00us off. I've tried designer whey and it's a waste. too expensive and it mixes terribly. It does taste good. I think High 5 tastes better and it mixes flawlessly. If you can go into a store, yhey may give you a free mixer as well I have about six of 'em. Good luck to you. Here is a pdf url for High 5 http://www.maxmuscle.com/shopmax/ezcart/products_data/123.pdf

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (53 posts) at 08:06 PM:
well..the reason im using this (the '100% whey', and the 'myopro' have only like 4 carbs in it), is because you have to use one EAS/BFL product...and this is pretty much the only thing i take/use. i usually use IronTek

My husband drinks this all the time, but he is strictly doing BFL to gain mass. There are 17 gm of good fat in one RTD, and the carbs are low compared to the protein. The chocolate tastes great, though. lol

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (262 posts) at 08:41 AM:
I use the RTD's sometime when I want a protein+fat meal (like, pre-lifting or something.) Though I'll probably try and find something else. I'm not too wild about the taste.

Body for Life Forum Message by Dunc (4 posts) at 07:25 PM:
This stuff tastes great even with water. I just used it for the last 14 weeks, the end of C1 and all of C2. I got very strong, but didn't loose the weight I should have for a whole challenge. My workout partner, who is very knowledgeable, swears this is not the right shake to take if weight loss is your goal. I am switching back to Myoplex for C#3, so I'll know for sure in about 12 weeks. Hope this helps.

At 43 I am giving away 13 years to him and 18 to Pixy but by the end of the year I want to be in their league. So my first entry today is 2.12 with a peak of 9.0 on the treadmill. Right now I am more than a half mile behind them but by the end of the year they may be hearing some Heavy footsteps...

Is there not a way you can focus on the path which will get you the job/ security you desire, but also leave the door open for the community planning? I think , demographically speaking, community planning will be huge in the future, just because what we are currently doing as a society, clearly needs fixing. Success to You! Yours in Health, Kerry

Do what you love, and the money will follow. It's trite, but true. Also, I wouldn't base a decision on what one intern's experience was at one particular place. The role of an intern, especially in nonprofits, can vary widely and sometimes they're unfortunately placed with people who aren't effective supervisors and leaders. Or with people who don't enjoy their jobs.

Body for Life Forum Message by Suz2lose (75 posts) at 08:37 AM:
I totally agree with HotBody. If you were soley basing this on your experience in the field and have found that this career path will bore you...GOOD, you make the call. Every place, person and position will create an entirely different opinion from one person to the next. With that said; don't take the advice of one or two people, even if their advice was with good intentions. Your path and purpose in life may not be in the same mold as theirs. I say if you truly went in with your HEART SET on this path, take it...don't get stuck in a career that your MIND SET is on...two entirely different choices. Don't feel obligated to take a job that is boring just because you made a deal with your husband, or because it is a stable job, invested time and money into it, schooled for, etc...that's MIND SET...Follow your HEART and do what makes you happy!!! Also, don't focus on the agreement you and your family made...that only adds pressure. Your husband will be supportive while you take time to decide. DO WHAT YOU LOVE!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (760 posts) at 09:04 AM:
I almost forgot! There's an interesting online test that you can take for free that assesses your possible career matches. (And of course, there are options to purchase different levels of it.) It's uncanny how well it discerned my strengths, interests, and abilities. I've even used some of its findings to help shape my resume and how I describe myself in interviews. assessment.com

What about focusing on public health? That area would fit in perfectly with your interests in health, helping community with weight issues/loss, and with research. When you see how many people and children are obese in our country, our communities have a great need for professionals to work with public awareness and education. And just about every city/community has public health 'officials' on staff.

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (120 posts) at 11:42 PM:
Thanks everyone for your responses. I know a lot of sociologists that have more than one "focus" so I guess it isn't impossible to work on more than one thing. Ideally, I could incorportate it all and open my own nonprofit agency for obesity treatment, while researching on the side to benefit the organization and its goals. Of course, this is just a dream because I am POOR and in debt! Anyway, I e-mailed my advisor and asked him if he had any suggestions for who to speak to and if he knew of anyone that successfully got a job researching obesity. You'd think there'd be a need for people who are good with stats and methods (which is what being a sociologist is primarily about) in the field of obesity research. I just have to find one! btw, I will check out the links you gave me. Thanks again.

From Carole's blog (thanks Carole!): Vanilla or Chocolate Protein Bar Recipe Yields 10 Protein Bars Cost per serving: $0.50 to $0.75 (cheap!) Ingredients: 3 1/2 cups oatmeal (traditional, slow cook) 1 1/2 cups powdered non fat milk 1 cup sugar free syrup (I used Log Cabin) 2 egg whites 1/4 cup orange juice 1 tsp vanilla essence 1/4 c. natural unsweetened applesauce 4 scoops whey protein powder Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix all dry ingredients in bowl and blend well. In separate bowl, combine egg whites, orange juice, applesauce and the sugar-free syrup. Blend well. Stir liquids into dry ingredients until mixed. The consistency will be thick and similar to cookie dough. Spread batter in a 9” x 12” baking dish. Bake until edges are crisp and browned (approximately 20 minutes). Cut into 10 bars and store in an airtight container or freeze. NOTE: Before eating, spread 1 tbsp of Natural Peanut Butter mixed with Splenda (for cooking) to taste. This protein bar by far is much better then store bought! You could also use Sugar Free Fruit Preserve of your choice! P.s. Do not add additional protein powder to this recipe, it will not work very well. You could eat a protein bar for breakfast along with a few egg whites on the side (for a well-balance carb/protein breakfast).

maybe you need to change your routine up. sticking with the same ole same ole will keep you stagnant. try power lifting for a month or so. start by lifting the heaviest weight you can, even if its only once. then drop the weight down one notch (or for example, start by doing 35lb dumbbell curls. do it once..heck do it once with a spotter if you need to). then drop it to 30lbs..do the same, then 25, 20, 15, 10. when you get to 10, do as many as you can (trust me, by the time you hit that 10lber..it will feel like 50!)

Thread: Squats - now what? (98 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (760 posts) at 10:53 AM: Squats - now what?
I need some more advice on my squats.

I started out with dumbell squats, and was able to move up to 20 lbs. in each hand.  My upper body couldn't handle any more, so I moved to the Smith Machine.  I'm now up to 50 lbs. on each side, but my knees wobble under that weight.  I did one round with the Hack Squat equipment, but my shoulders didn't feel quite up to it.

My legs can handle more, so what should I work with now?  Or do you think there's something with my form that I should work on?  Or yet again, should I not focus so much on increasing weights but increasing intensity by going super slow?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Body for Life Forum Message by desperatemama (6 posts) at 11:45 AM:
I have the same problem. My legs are stronger than what my upper body can handle holding when doing squats. Plus my knees are starting to ache. I workout in my home and am hoping for some new ideas. I get a great workout in for my hamstrings and tush, but my quads aren't getting much work. At least we know that we are not alone in this situation!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (395 posts) at 01:40 PM:
I would try the Leg Press on the machine where you lie down and press your legs up. Try it using one leg at a time vs. two. Let me tell you, this is a true quad workout if you are having trouble with squats. You may be lifting too much weight to start your sets with. I had the same problem as I started in January because I had just returned back to a new challenge after delivering a baby in October. I would definitely concentrate on completing your barbell squat reps slowly in the Smith machine as form is important. If you feel pain during a squat, then your form is not correct. Try to focus on acting like you are sitting in a chair by extending your rear end back and your knees should never extend in front of your feet. If you are in a gym, perhaps you can have a decent trainer show you the proper form. Then slowly increase your weights when your intensity level is not the same. Best of luck to you. Jeannine

Body for Life Forum Message by kitwhit (104 posts) at 03:44 PM:
Excellent thread. My lower body is way stronger than my upper body. I did the machines for a while for my LBWO and then realized I wasn't feeling the soreness the way I should and have been doing lunges. Now I am very sore! I want to work my way into squats and now I'm not so intimidated. Jeannine I love the suggestion of doing the leg press one leg at a time!!! Cool! Can't wait to try this . . .

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (53 posts) at 08:24 PM:
when you are on the smith machine, make sure you step your feet out in front of you..so you are kind of leaning back towards the bar. that way when you squat, your quads are parellel to the floor without your knees getting the pressure.

Body for Life Forum Message by bluepulse (8 posts) at 02:42 PM: Finding X12 embarrassing!
This may be a guy thing, or a just me thing. I always get embarrassed when I start my 12 reps with the low weight. For instance, I start my curls with the 15 lb dumbbells. It seems like all the other guys are curling 50 lb +…ugh. I always feel like they’re thinking “you sissy!” I don’t know, maybe I am. :0 When I get to the X6 rep I’m curling with the 30 lb dumbbell. That doesn’t seem so bad. I really need to get over my insecurities.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (422 posts) at 02:50 PM:
I laugh and roll my eyes at the guys at my gym who are basically trying to show off using the really heavy weights, mostly for only a few reps before they pose for the mirrors. Most of them are bell ringers anyway. You've seen them? There was a competitive body builder at my old gym who was huge. I mean this guy could have been on a magazine, bald head, tan, the works. He used to use 15 lb dumbells for some of his isolated shoulder exercises. Nobody ever laughed at him. :-) Wonder why? lol Just wait until you show them how it's really done during this challenge!

Body for Life Forum Message by charladee (96 posts) at 02:51 PM:
I don't think it is a guy thing...actually I thought it was a girl thing. I always feel like the guys in the gym get annoyed with me when I invade their space. SO...what I am thinking as that maybe we are both paranoid. If they are looking at you, maybe they are just trying to figure out what program you are doing. I do that sometimes. When I saw this girl working out, I tried to keep an eye on her to figure out what her program was. (I had noticed she had lost alot of weight)Her weight lifting seemed so spuratic to me. But it wasn't body for life whatever she was doing...but I wasn't thinking anything bad, just trying to figure it out.

Body for Life Forum Message by kitwhit (104 posts) at 03:32 PM:
Yup I agree - not a guy thing. I feel like such a weight dweeb when I start with 5, then 8 then 10 . . . but honestly that is where I am at and I've found the "right" weight for me now for all the exercises and when I get to my final 12 it's all I can do to keep going til the end so I know I'm in the right place. I see guys and gals at my gym who pick up the heaviest weights they can stand and then have the worst form and don't get the concept of resistance at all - like they are rushing through to get finished faster than anyone else. I have to laugh. All that effort and they are missing half of the workout!

Body for Life Forum Message by bluepulse (8 posts) at 05:14 PM:
Well it is good to know I'm not the only one that feels this way. I thought I would see many others doing the same BFL workout.. No one I can see is doing the BFL method. Some of the guys do their reps than immediately go do something else than come back and do more reps. I do the reps, rest for one minute, thanks for the old wrist watch, then do more. I really enjoy that one minute of recovery. Charladee~ I do not see how they could be annoyed. I'll tell you what annoys me..When guys can't put the plates back and leave them for the next person to do it. I feel that is rude and shows little respect for their fellow workouterers..(oooh new word)

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (53 posts) at 08:10 PM:
you know what? who cares what they think. the only thing you need to worry about is if you are lifting enough weight to failure. (are you?) i start out at 15's too, and go to 30's as well. i cant do 6 reps on the 30's but i can get out about 3. just make sure you are REALLY lifting as hard as you can

Body for Life Forum Message by keaton7655 (23 posts) at 08:24 PM:
Nope, not just a guy thing. I, being a girl, think the guys are looking at me as if to say "stupid girl won't build anything lifting those whimpy weights." or when I go to set 4 with heavy weights and then drop back on set 5. They are probably thinking again "stupid girl, thought she'd be tough and lift heavy, but couldn't hack it!" It's all in our heads, but our bodies will show the real truth! You just wait, and then they will be thinking "DAMN, I need to know what he's doing to look so awesome!"

Body for Life Forum Message by bluepulse (8 posts) at 08:28 PM:
Minka~You are one strong woman. I can do 6 reps on the 30's but the 12 with the 25's are brain-popping. I guess I should push myself a bit further. I like the idea of going to failure. When you do your curls, are you sitting or standing?

Body for Life Forum Message by bluepulse (8 posts) at 08:33 PM:
keaton7655~I know exactly how you feel! When I go to my 6x and immediately drop down a weight to do my 12x I'm thinking, "Ha dude couldn't bust out those reps." I think when I get to the higher reps and I start looking a bit better, it'll all make since. Maybe we are all a bit to self-conscious. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (53 posts) at 08:33 PM:
i do both (alternate). i also do curls on an incline bench. VERY hard..i have to lower my weights to do those. yeah...if you cant finish your 12's by raising your weight..thats ok...because before you know it, you WILL be finishing the 12's! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by kitwhit (104 posts) at 07:19 AM:
I'm just checking in the morning of Day 3 for me. Here is what I've found (and this is just for me but remember I have major problems in this area due to medication): From Day one I used one scoop of the fiber stuff but also added one scoop of straight psyllium husks. This is only because I have issues, but this might be an option to experiment with if you don't have any results after a day or so. I mix my drink in the blender, which I highly recommend, with about 2-3 ozs of an organic fruit juice and 6-7 ozs of water. It is kind of yummy. The tea is the key to eliminating all this fiber and how long you steep it really does make a huge difference. Day one I steeped it 5 minutes and the next morning I woke before the alarm with some slight cramping which I didn't mind because I knew it meant something was happening. Last night I steeped for about 3 minutes and this morning I've only been up 45 minutes and have already gone twice with no pain or diarrhea. I haven't noted anything out of a horror movie yet, and have not found any cats, but the second time this morning it looked like if I put on gloves and picked it up with a plastic spoon it might unravel into one of those crazy twisty things. I'm just not ready to go there. I do think it's really important to do lots of water with the Paranil and also a good amount after the fiber drink. And if you can up your intake a little during the day as well I think this is beneficial. Just wanted to share . . .

Body for Life Forum Message by kitwhit (104 posts) at 08:27 AM:
Hi Forest - this is supposed to clean out the years and years of colon build up and any existing parasites as opposed to just making/keeping you regular. From what I've read we all have 5-25 pounds of old build up in our colons and this keeps the body from being able to take full advantage of the nutrients we ingest. People do report some bit of weight loss but mostly report that their stomachs get flatter as a result of this program. I think though that we are doing it less out of a desire to lose weight (as BFL works just fine for that) and more out of a morbid curiousity/desire to clean out!

Ok..Holy gas batman!!! Last night I had so much building up inside my belly. Maybe not enough water. Last night while the baby was drinking her bottle, I looked up all the ingredients in the colonix. (Well for the fiber and tea.) Every single thing is good for us anyway, so I don't see the harm.(That other thread had a couple articles saying its not beneficial or is harmful.) The only thing is a couple of the ingredients could interact with other drugs you may be taking.(Make them work less effectively or increase effect.) I don't remember what they were. I believe one was lasix and that the herb increased the diuretic effect therefore causing you to lose even more water which could dehydrate the person.(Increasing the effect of the lasix). Basically the stuff we are drinking has the following effects(There are more than I am listing...I can't remember them all.) Mild Laxative Good for asthma, ezcema, psoriasis, respiratory problems, cholestrol, triglycerides. May aid in helping prevent various types of cancers, heart attacks, acne problems, other skin problems. There is one thing though...Slippery Elm Bark and I believe Marshmallow root causes mucilage(sp?). In other words increases mucus so you breath easier and pass stoll more effeciently. I am wondering if thats why some of the pictures on drnatura.com showed mucus type poops. The side effects for the herbs didn't show mucuc filled poop, but maybe. Oh well. :) This morning I didn't have a formed stool. In fact it scared me a little. Kind of like it decomposed inside...I saw some onions from dinner last night in it. HAHAHA! YUCK!

Yeah, when I researched colon cleansing a couple years ago...I read somewhere that when they did Elvis's autopsy he had like 25+ lbs of crap in his colon. A lot of people you see walking around that look really skinny but have "beer bellies"...well you know what that is from. Anyway, how many bottles are people ordering? How long do you have to be on this stuff before it cleans you out? I can't imagine I would be that bad as I have eaten natural oatmeal w/blueberries every morning for the past 2 years. That's gotta help some. I was thinking of ordering 3 bottles...2 for me (be cause I am a NUT) and 1 for my wife. I know she could benefit because she has wierd allergies and stuff. 3 bottles good for 2 peoples to start? ps- I feel I have to add my grossness to this pile of shiet! lol When I got my colon cleansed like 8 years ago, I went to a licensed professional. Well, it was going GREAT stuff was coming out, it was smelly, dark, the whole works. Well, she decided to go get a drink of water or something and was gone for like 5 minutes. While she was gone, I had a HUGE bm and the hose wasn't big enough to contain it. So it started seeping out all over the place...was REALLY gross and the foulest smell I had ever encountered from going to the bathroom. Anywayzzz...there's my story. =) I hope none of you were eating or about to eat. hee hee

Anyway, I'm reporting in on my first full day. OK, so last night you all know I drank my tea while on chat. Tea tasted awesome. This morning I got up and took my paranil, then went to my friends house to use her treadmill, came home and did my fiber. I used a whole scoop instead of a half and blended it in about 8 oz of water with my turbo blenderstick. I went to an all day conference and now home. It's 3:45pm. I've had...count it.... ZERO results!!!! I'm so disappointed. I think I may steep my tea a bit longer. I had some mild abdominal cramping this morning, but no poo. I feel like a big bloated tick and I was going to take my 4 week pictures tomorrow. Now I feel like I've started my period all over again with all this bloating. Anyone else have this happen?? (When I first started I maxed out at 4.2 :o/ ) So keep trying different things, different tweaks with whatever you're doing until you can find that 10. I tried to go higher the other day (had been consistently going up for four weeks each time I got on the treadmill so thought I could do it again) and I about blew my lungs out! I was sick the rest of the day. Not what you want, but at least now I know my limit, right? Try stairs, walking lunges, jump rope, anything. And keep up the awesome work!

I got an iPod for Christmas, and I have to say it has made ALL the difference in getting through my 20 minutes of cardio. I put all kinds of upbeat music that I love on it and I spend the whole time just jamming. It's almost like dancing on the elliptical, only not really, because I don't want to fall off, LOL! When I worked out at home, I would use a Reebok step and my CDs.. I'd put on something pumping and just do steps I remembered from a step aerobics class I took a couple of years ago, and I actually had fun! Now, with the iPod going, I actually will look down at the clock and be surprised that 17 minutes have passed already and I'm about to hit my 10. But your results are great, so don't worry about whether you're progressing at a good pace. Try to keep going through the whole 20 minutes and you'll do even better! Jess

Body for Life Forum Message by leanzzz (23 posts) at 05:51 AM: GNC Physical Magazine Transformation After Picture
Back in October I submitted a before and after picture and a short story about how BFL changed my life. It was after I finished my first challenge and before I started my second challenge in November. I didn't think much of it and three weeks after I submitted the stuff a freelance writer e-mailed me and said she was going to run my story! I sent her an updated picture from my second challenge photo shoot and the latest stats. She thinks it will be in the April 2006 issue as of right now. I want to sincerely thank all of you on tracker for encouraging me through your mail messages and votes. You guys rock and have inspired me so much. God bless to everyone. Jesse

If you want to see a preview of the picture it is posted as the 0 week picture of my third challenge. I didn't not tell the writer about my marathon event because I was still too embarrassed about it. After reading the 2005 finalists entries I decided to tell my story. Thank God for BFL.

How much do you drink? I am 5'7 245lbs..Im not a fat slob, I do have some good muscle but I think with my size I should be drinking at least 12-15 8z. cups of water a day. My weight workouts are very intense and I do the Guerillo cardio for 32 min and I burn 665 cal so as you can see I really push it. I use an icline of about 4%to6% my tradmill goes up to 15%(I paid $2500 for it). The weird thing about drinking all that water is stoamch gets that bloated look and then in the morning I feel like I can get into size 32(I can get into 38's). Oh by the way....I PEEEEEE ALLLOOOOTT!!!!!! KEEP FOCUSED!!

I've told them a bunch of times about BFL, but they say working out 6 times a week and eating 6 times a day is too much...I can't help but smile each week when they asked me how much I've lost. They are all on a weight watchers kick..and I do hope they stick with it. The problem with these girls is they want to see results right away...They have more chance with BFL achieving that then WW. Hi, I have the original Bill PHillips BFL book. BUT... I see that there is a body for life for women out now too. What is the difference and should I buy the one for women to go along with my other book or use instead? I want to stay up to speed. ARe there any changes? Thanks!CHarla

Body for Life Forum Message by JerryBraam.com (179 posts) at 12:08 PM: Re: Body for Life book, for women?

<LOL>
To be straight out honest...in my opinion...I think the BFL women is a major rip off! They ripped Bill and some of us!

1st, at the begining of the book, they tried to make it seem that Bill Phillips endorsed the book by mentioning him by name twice, then saying they had a long discussion. Couldn't be farther from the truth. Then they use past before & afters photos of successful Champs & Challengers that used the Real BFL book. Then she treats women like they are wimps by giving constant excuses why it is okay to not lift weights, not reach for 10's(HighPoints). Then women that read both books way too many become so confused they get discouraged between the 2 diferent programs and then return to their old habits. I could go on...but I'll get too pissed! Most know how I feel about following more than one program at a time

HotBod said.... Just follow the REAL BFL BOOK!
I tell my friends the very same.

If anyone knows anything... about me at all. They know I am probably in the top 1% of Bill Phillips loyalists of all time. But,  with that being said...we are all different & I am sure there are a few women that may find Bill's book a little too tough & too challenging. Then Pam's book might work for them. It is all in the individual!

Don't waste your $$$. That book is really just full of excuses IMO. Follow the original BFL book. You'll do great:-)

Hi Jerry: So good to see you at the Expo. Thanks for buying me all those free waters at the Purple Martini...Anyway, Shane told me that he and Marc are still laughing at my verbal outburst over Body for life for Women. It makes me crazy to think someone would dare put their face on Bill's logo. Pamela Peek needs to just do her own thing and leave Bill alone. I would suggest sticking with the original plan. It works.

Body for Life Forum Message by Kristalyn (16 posts) at 12:22 PM:
I have read both books. And, although I am following Bill's book to the T and love it, I have given the women's book to other women. To me, the women's book is really motivating and and gives women some mental exercises to get to the point of wanting to make a change. This is where I think that the too books used together are GREAT for women. I was already to that point, but some of the women I have given the book to were not. In addition, I was a former athlete and Bill's program was exactly what I needed, but if I were to give honest advice to someone asking me, I would tell them to read the women's book first, and then read the original book for more direction. Used together, they're great! If you are already using Bill's book and don't need any extra emotional support, don't worry about the women's book, but if you know someone that you've been working on to follow the program, but they just don't want to, then this would be my suggestion. As Jerry said, it's all in the individual.

Cheryl

Body for Life Forum Message by kitwhit (104 posts) at 12:47 PM:
Jerry I am so glad to read what you have to say about this book. It was the one I bought first, when I didn't know BFL at all. I tried to muddle through all the touchy-feely "our hormones make us so very special" crap and finally put it down when I got to the sentence where she tells readers if they just aren't up to it that day it's OK - they should take a "mini-chill for chocolate." What a crock. What I know is that we women are strong and able whether we are PMS-ing, giving birth or bleeding. If what you want is BFL and a strong healthy lifestyle get the real book. If what you want is someone to provide excuses so you feel less guilty about sittin on your butt and eating chocolate instead of doing the work get the fake book. I was offended, and ashamed that this book was written by a woman.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (395 posts) at 01:29 PM:
The women's book may motivate those who are not very serious about change, but the only true motivator is the original BFL book in my opinion. I was not ashamed as the author does not take on my position or opinions, but in turn makes excuses for women. I was offended by the fact she categorizes women into these categories with the hormone and chocolate crap. I have completed many of the 12 week challenges (in exercise and diet only as I have never submitted my paperwork up until this year) and weight training is crucial to both men and women, not just men. The true shame is that the BFL name is associated with this book and will deceive many as Bill Phillips endorsing this when it is not true. Just found out yesterday the EAS company was recently sold. Not sure who bought it, but found out when I went to Vitamin Shoppe to buy Myoplex Lite shakes and they were practically out. They claimed that during the company sale, the computer system switchover skewed the inventory levels on Myoplex Lite shakes. Not sure how true this may be, but hopefully the new owners will not endorse or approve of any future books written by the author of the women's BFL book.

Body for Life Forum Message by charladee (96 posts) at 02:16 PM:
WOW...I just assumed that the body for life for women was a Bill Phillips endorsed book. I assumed that Pamela was working with him or something. That really bothers me that she made the cover exactly like the original BFL book except for her picture. Now that I know that. Even if it were a great book, I don't think I could bring my self to support that type of misrepresentation. (I can't even listen to Milly Vanilly anymore....JUST KIDDING---never did!)Geez. Thank you for all the info. I will just go reopen my Bill Phillips Book and start fresh Monday. I liked what I had read before on the bill phillips book anyway---didn't want to miss out on anything new that was added since I read it last, just need to refresh and follow through. I probably would get overwhelmed with too much info anyway. Thank you so much for all the responses. Charla!

Body for Life Forum Message by sterling (15 posts) at 09:45 AM: I love John Hussman
His site has such great info! http://www.hussmanfitness.org "Think of it this way. A woman doing relatively well on her fitness program might be losing over 1 pound of fat a week, while gaining a fraction of a pound of muscle. So while she might be on track to lose 12-15 pounds of fat and gain a few pounds of lean muscle over 12 weeks, by the 5th week she might be looking at a scale change of less than 4 pounds. And since that's about the weight of a meal and a couple of glasses of water, she may not even see the scale move at all. This is especially true at high bodyfat levels, where shifts in water retention over a monthly cycle can be quite large. But gradually, the changes are happening anyway, as long as she doesn't give up. For women at high bodyfat levels, progress may not show for weeks at a time. The reason is that your readings will zig-zag within their downward path. If you measure from a peak in weight to a recent trough, you'll be elated at the "jump" in your progress. But other times you'll get a trough-to-peak reading and be totally frustrated. Don't extrapolate either of these impressions. Chart your numbers and measure progress from peak-to-peak or trough-to-trough."

BIG BULL buying a vowel here........oops.......I mean "vying a bowel!"    In the struggle for intestinal superiority, the battle rages on inside!!  My C2 has turned into a glorified ancient greek olympic parade of team mini-challenges, biggest loser contests, "colon"-ist support group meetings (w/ wild and wacky threads), Pilates and Slim 'n 6's Ramp It Up total body workout!!!  Hell, we might as well throw in "Sweatin' to the Oldies" while we are at it...or at maybe "Poopin' to the Oldies!!!"

My C2 has been given the name "C2 'Carry the Torch' DO-OVER" Challenge.  This CHALLENGE has taken on a life of its own and is producing results in fat loss and muscle gain like nothing I have ever experienced!  My attitude is WHATEVER IT TAKES I will do and I am absolutely LEAVING EVERYTHING ON THE FLOOR as we say metaphorically in sports!  "ALL-IN" is not the best moniker to use for me this challenge, rather "ALL-OUT WARFARE" to take back my best health and best body would be most appropriate!!!  The metabolism is raging and the fat and weight are just melting off under such extreme conditions!  With RECKLESS ABANDON this C2 Challenge will be a challenge for the ages!!!

How 'bout you??? Are you ALL-OUT making this your VERY BEST Challenge??? What do you have to lose???  I chatted with WECANDOIT yesterday and she has been strugglin' lately and I challenged her to STOP...do a 180...and throw down the gauntlet to a continued HEALTHIER and BETTER YOU!  She took the challenge and took my hand and has turned it around!
Now it's YOUR TURN..........HIT a HOMERUN TODAY!!!

Thread: Ladies: Mirena IUD & weight (72 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by eve36 (25 posts) at 11:59 AM: Ladies: Mirena IUD & weight
Hi girls! Any other Mirena users out there? I've had mine in since March 05, and have been steadily gaining since then (130 to 145 in about 6 months, without really doing anything to warrant that gain!). I thought maybe I'm eating too much? But then I did the Wild Rose cleanse, and everyone I know who does it has lost at least 12 lbs. I think I lost 2. Maybe. Then I started South Beach, and lost 1 or 2 lbs over the first 2 weeks (I had lost about 8 lbs the first time I did it, pre-Mirena. Seven to 13 lbs is the avge weight loss for the first 2 week phase) I didn't associate my IUD with my weight, but I was puzzled. Now I'm ending week 9 of BFL, and I'm doing well as far as sticking to my nutrition plan, and my workouts. I exercise intensely, just as Bill says. I'm building muscle, but the weight is not coming off. I've re-examined my portions, my journal, I hit 10's most of the time, I don't think I'm doing it wrong. I started at 143 lbs, I'm now 140ish. Same pant size. It's been discouraging to put in all that effort, and not really show any results (there are some results, but it certainly doesn't reflect the work I'm doing. Plus, in the past - even since my 2 pregnancies, I have lost weight and built muscle a lot more easily and quickly than this, without this much effort!). The weight is staying around my belly, my hips, upper thighs, butt, which suggests to me that it's probably hormone related. Which made me think of my IUD (Mirena has hormones). Finally, I googled Mirena weight gain yesterday, and I am astounded at how many other women are struggling with their weight since Mirena! (and depression, mood swings, loss of libido, etc...) It's a great system of BC for those who don't get the side effects, but I just wanted to post this in case there are others like me who are wondering what the heck is wrong with them! I had no idea about these side effects. My doctor swore I wouldn't gain any weight on it. I want it out! Any suggestions for reliable, non-hormonal alternatives? I get pregnant quickly... Don't want to take out the IUD and gain weight anyway!!! thanks!

Hi Eve36: I have the Mirena as well. I had that put in about 2002 I believe. My doctor said at the time it would be very difficult for me to lose any weight at all because of the hormones in it. I have actually gained weight over the last three years. 40 lbs. to be exact. Even with intense training, and running track a few times, I still maintained a consistent weight. Now at 240 pounds, I am seriously considering having it removed. It was hell to get it put in. I would opt for twilight sleep to get it out. Anyway, I have enjoyed not having any periods anymore or pain each month. It's been great. So much freedom! But if removing it meant losing the weight, I would do it in a heartbeat. I have spent thousands of dollars on trainers, Lindora Medical weight loss center, and everything else. I understand your frustration. The benefit of Merina is that it is 100% effective birth control. No question about it. So there is a trade off there. Thanks for posting about that. I haven't really met anyone else that has this device.

I use microgestin Fe 1/20, a very lose-dose pill, but I'm seriously considering the Essure procedure since my husband refuses to talk about the big "V". I think I'll start a thread on Monday and see if anybody has any experience with it. If I get pregnant again, it could be another set of twins or even triplets. YIKES!! Don't even want to go there. You may want to consider it if you are looking for something permanent.

what is the Essure procedure? My husband is supposed to be making an appt for the big V, but he's a bit slow at getting things rolling... I'll have to remind him abstinence is another very effective birth control measure...!

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (422 posts) at 06:29 PM:
LOL eve36! He's probably hoping you'll just forget he even offered to get it done. Essure is a new alternative to a tubal ligation without the cutting and cauterizing of the tubes. You can google it and find the manufacturer's website with all the details.

I finally got the courage to post my pics. I wanted to be able to prove to myself that this was something I could accomplish before I went plastering my photos on in internet. I feel well on my way to accomplishing my goals and I am very proud of what I have accomplished so far. I hope that my progress will encourage others. When I succeed at the end I hope that it will be added to the list of people who have already benefited from this program.

Thread: Can I talk myself out of a funk here? (29 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by beachsoccer (25 posts) at 10:44 PM: Can I talk myself out of a funk here?
I remember reading posts about a four week funk so I know I should just keep rocking the BFL lifestyle, but tonight I'm feeling a little non-plused about the improvements in my body over the course of four weeks. Not over eating hasn't been that hard because I'm not such a fanatic about food, how I got fat was probably skipping lots of meals and maybe drinking too much. So the last time I drank was the night I took my before pictures (who could do such a humiliating thing sober?) I'm eating clean, and the only way I've "cheated" with the exercise is that twice I've substituted cardio for weights....wait, I must admit I'm not sure I'm hitting my 10s also. Must be diligent about that too. Anyway, I came home from school today, skiped the gym, and decided to settle in for a nice depressing evening of school work and contemplation about whether or not killing myself to prepare a weeks worth of properly proportioned snacks was worth it. But I looked on tracker at that thread about the music people were listening to, and I decided to burn some music. While I was waiting I sorted through the mail and found a samba video I had ordered as a reward for week 3. So I got up and did it, and damn it it was fun. So now I'm going to go eat a BFL meal and give the fretting a rest. I'm still not really impressed with how I look, but I will continue to have faith. I'm just going to trust everyone on here and work on being a more patient less obsessive Body for Life tracker. P.S. I'm the last person who should dole out advice, as I just wrote a novella about how I wasn't sure what I was doing was working for me, but...If anyone uses exercise videos to supplement their workout routine, I use to think videos were for shut-ins, but I've been getting yoga dvds at the library to do at night and I've really enjoyed them for a tamer workout so here is a list of videos I've used (not necessarialy on this challenge) and found tolerable: Power Yoga 1,2,3 with Bryan Kest (hard) Yoga for urban living with Hemalaya Behl (tame) Some Yoga video with Ali Mcgraw I owned in college had kick-ass scenery and sound track (mix of relaxing and hard) New York City Ballet workout (nice classical music) And this Samba Party Workout with Vanessa Isaac (You're not going to hit a 10, but I had to go put on a bra to do it) Damn Brazilian dance is fun. Anyone have any suggestions for videos they really liked? Thanks for listening. Emily

Hey Emily, can i just give you a huge BFL hug?? I was soo there last week on my week 4! Especially becuase my husband was kicking @ss and I was feeling like hey Im eating better than him and working out more and he is getting more progress!! If it helps any let me just say that week 4 I felt like barely any progress and i was pretty annoyed..end of week 5 here and all the sudden I feel like I turned a corner, Like I woke up in the middle of the week and everything was too big to wear. Keep working and remember that at this point most of the changes are happening from the inside out so even though its happeneing you just can't see it yet. Hang in there, sounds like you are on the right track!! Kate

Excellent post! I'm on my second challenge and I couldn't have said it better. I remember the first time I tried the challenge I didn't really start noticing a weight change until about week 3. After week three came the pounds were dropping very rapidly. It was something like a lb a day. At one point it kind of scared me to lose so much weight so fast I only made the challenge 6 weeks...My problem was I had to move and my life became disrupted terribly. alas, I gained the weight back. :( and now I'm on my second challeng and feeling awesome. You are absolutley right about sticking by the book. I never had a program that worked so well. The 12-10-8-6-12-12 is the best! Thanks for such an inspirational post.

Thread: Question about cardio... (68 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Liza608 (2 posts) at 05:18 PM: Question about cardio...
I am contemplating starting Body for Life, but I have one concern. I normally do about 45-50 min. or cardio every day, and lift moderately 2 or 3 times a week. I am interested in this program because I would like to cut back on the amount of time I am spending in the gym. But my concern is that since my body is used to doing so much cardio, will cutting back so drastically help me? It seems it would actually hurt... I appreciate any thoughts you might have....

Body for Life Forum Message by blessedgirl (22 posts) at 05:51 PM:
I think the seceret is in the intensity intervals. Im not sure it will hurt you to cut back on your time. It's just a more time efficient way of burning some serious fat! Your working hard for a short amount of time. Also with the intense weight lifting you will be building more lean muscle so that helps burn fat too. I LOVE THIS PROGRAM! No more 2 hours a day at the gym!

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (126 posts) at 05:56 PM:
Liza, I too ran a lot. I'd do 5-6 miles 4 or 5 times a week. It has not hurt me doing only the 20 minute cardio solution. As blessedgirl eluded, its the INTENSITY! I sweat more doing my 20 minute HIIT then I do when I run at a steady pace for 5 miles. You know where your comfort zone is while running. Make that your level 6 or 7, then bump it up for your level 8 and 9, then on your level 10, just jack it up to 8-9mph...unless you are doing that already. It WILL work!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Champ2B (4 posts) at 07:14 PM:
Dear Liza608: If you do the 20 min. high intensity correctly, you should be wiped out completely when you are done. Soaking wet, gasping for air, level 10. I used to run track myself. But this method kicks some serious booty. For you, I would jack up the starting intensity and work from there. It should be a challenge after the first 3 warm up minutes. You will burn calories for hours after you're done. Check the BFL book for the cardio interval instructions. Get yourself some good music and go for it!

Body for Life Forum Message by Liza608 (2 posts) at 10:58 PM: Re: Question about cardio...
Thanks for the input everyone, it helps to hear that other people have gone from doing a lot of cardio to this program. I do have the book...well, I did, and lent it to my best friend, who still has it!

I'm glad I work this shift because on the day shift there are always goodies around. There is this one lady (She needs to go on BFL also)who is always bringing things in and trying to feed everyone.

Body for Life Forum Message by BFLSands (8 posts) at 08:38 PM:
I work in intensive care and sometimes its very hard for me to get meals in. I just treat some meals like a bathroom break and wolf it down in 2 minutes or less. Its terrible, but there's no alternative for me sometimes.

Yeah, I'm a PA, and so I eat my cottage cheese and yogurt between patients. I bring my lunch and stick it in the fridge, but the cc and yogurt I keep in my office ina a little lunch box with a ice pack. I have 2 alarms set to go off at 930 and then again at 330. I make it a point to eat my snack before I go in to see the next patient. No one has ever gotten upset that I walked into the room at 332pm instead of 330pm. You find ways to make it work.....
