How about adding a swiss ball or adj. bench too?
I saw the commercials for the SelectTech dumbbells...are they as bulky as they look on TV??

I agree with HotBody.

My husband and I have accomplished a lot with our set of adjustable dumbbells. (We'd benefit from an adjustable bench, but we've made due so far and we are happy with the results.)
Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (100 posts) at 11:00 AM
I know this sounds like a broken record.. But, I too have to agree with Hot Body. I just bought my Select Tech 552 two weeks ago and I can virtually do all of my required weight training with them. Make sure you do look into an adjustable bench if you don't already have one.
One thing to note, Angel... If you are working by yourself, you may be able to get by with buying the Select Tech 220 rather then the 552 and save some money.. But keep in mind, that as you progress in weight training, you will need more weights to train with. Don't get stuck having to buy another (heavier and more expensive) set in the near future. It may run you slightly over your $300.00 budget, but buying the better set will be well worth it's weight in GOLD in the future.

I did my BF% by tape measurement. I have checked it again and some sites say my BF has increased or not moved. I know this is not true because I can physical tell I can pinch less all over. I never used this method before.
Anyone having a problem using tape measurements? How does it know how much of the measurement is fat or muscle?
Body for Life Forum Message by Schelli (53 posts) at 03:11 PM
How long has it been since your last measurement?
I look at the long term results - as often there is quite a lot of variabiliy to BF readings.

Was in line to talk to Bill Phillips but he ran out of time. Thought he got off to a nervous start but finished strong. Found out he has new book coming out. Would have liked. more info like found in his BFL book and old BFL VHS tapes not the emotional issues some people called in with. Wanted to ask him if he will have a new DVD coming out and what's happening with him personally (marriage, etc.) that could be motivational to his followers. Bill is a fitness guru but he needs to get a bit more comfortable speaking live on radio. Overall I'll give him a solid B for tonight's show. Jim.
Body for Life Forum Message by sixpack (107 posts) at 06:14 PM
I agree that it was a bit rocky. This is actually what gives me hope. I realized that Bill is not perfect in everything in his life either and with that knowledge that lets me know that I can make a change and do this that are HARD or UNCOMFORTABLE until they aren't any more. I anticipate that he will be pretty solid in about 4 shows. The fact that he is doing it is the important part.

What's the best time to take a multivitamin? My thinking is after my workout because that's when I would have depleted or used most of the vitamins. Is there a best time?
Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (776 posts) at 10:00 AM
I take mine right before I go to bed. Any other time, and I get woozy and nauseous. So, now I basically sleep through it!
But if you're worried about vitamin depletion from a workout, how about drinking an EAS shake? It contains plenty of vitamins. That's usually what I have as my first meal of the day.
Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (39 posts) at 01:01 PM
The best time to take a mutli-vitamin is with food right after weight lifting.

I take mine first thing in the morning with my first meal. DOnt know if its right, but its the easiest way for me to remember. I feel like an older person with the pill case I use LOL. its seperated into 4x daily for all week. Its huge, but it works!
good luck!

I'm using CLA and just today started using Thermo-DynamX by EAS. I'll keep you up to date on how I like that. CLA is conjugated linoleic acid- go to EAS website or bodybuilding.com for a description of how it helps your body lose weight. Those sites will also tell you about Thermo-DynamX. Anyone else tried it? If so, let us know!

Hi Lisa! I take the ThermoDynamX with a morning meal, and again with an afternoon meal. I take the CLA three times a day with meals. And The BetaGen, I use it twice a day, everyday!! I mix two scoops of BetaGen in a 16 oz bottle of water, and drink I it about 20 to 30 minutes before I workout, and I drink another serving in the evening! I drink it everyday, even on free days! I drink one of my Myoplex Lite shakes right after I workout with weights, and I drink another one sometime during the day! I hope this helps!!! Best wishes too you!!!

I have to lose roughly a first grader! I'm glad everyone piped in on this one because it seems that whenever I look at someone's profile they started out with 10 lbs. to lose in 12 weeks. I know it's going to take me more than one challenge but I'm really in this for the long haul.
Get Her Done started at roughtly the same weight and measurements that I started with. She's very motivating and keeps plugging along. I did the challenge in 2002 and ended up at 140 lbs with 23% body fat so I know it works.
This time I'm commited to the life style change and not just a temporary "fix."
By the way, I'm across town in Smyrna! PM me any time!!!

I was looking at the page for that nut job who did the attack in the bar in New Bedford, Mass. last week and then killed a police officer in northern Arkansas on Saturday and his page was really disturbing.
What disgusted me though were the comments his friends were leaving after the attack, encouraging him to run and even after the stories hit the wires about him killing the police officer they were posting encouraging comments about him.

He said something to me in the effect of you are never finished you have to be able to maintain your focus and push on to something bigger or other goals to accomplish. Always maintain the foundation of that fit and healthy body and use that foudation to accomplish other bigger goals. I can't remain still.
I needed that. Thanks BILL

O.k., yesterday I ate everything in sight. Literally. pizza, chips, cookies, chocolate, everything. I feel like I've ruined the past couple of weeks' worth of work, and today I feel especially fat and bloated. Today I ate well, and I still feel so gross. I know I went a little overboard, but is it normal to feel this way after a cheat day?
Note to self - Never cheat ALL DAY again. lol I'm going to limit to one meal from now on. I feel like HELL.
Body for Life Forum Message by GlennH (83 posts) at 07:30 PM
Its a learning process. Congratulations, you just completed lesson 1. It is self regulating. Enjoy the treats or special foods that you have craved throughout the week on your free day. Just remember that enjoying chocolate doesn't mean you need to eat the whole box! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by blessedgirl (26 posts) at 10:29 PM
me too fitgirl86! and I already knew this lesson! I just went nutzo yesterday. I have had a headache ALL day! I feel like crap and looked like it in my face, clothes EVERYTHING. I wont be doing that again that was just stupid and out of hand! Heres to feeling better by the next free day...LOL
Body for Life Forum Message by fitprincess (15 posts) at 10:39 PM
Because of that feeling and the fact that I wanted to be able to enjoy lunches with the girls and dinners out with friends, I changed my "free day" into 3 free meals a week. For me, it's easier to stay on track that way. And actually, it's not uncommon to have a week where I don't even use all three free meals!
During this whole process, you will learn so much. Don't let ANYTHING get you down! Just view it as a learning experience and move on.
Best of luck to you!

proper sushi rice has sugar added. What they do is combine the vinegar and sugar and bring to a boil to dissolve the sugar, then they springle the mixture over the hot rice.
Stick with the sashimi, and have steamed rice on the side.

This is so good, I had to share!! Once your pasta is cooked top it w/ 1 cube of laughing cow reduced fat cheese (35cal) 2teaspoons of reduced fat sour cream (20cal) and 1 tablespoon of reduced fat grated parmesean cheese (20cal) and a sprinkle of dry parsley. Mix well, and put in microwave for an additional minute to melt together, season w/ pepper to your liking or a dash of salt (if you dare)!! Taste just like the real thing! Total calories 75, is the high end depending on what brand of parm and sour cream you use. I put it over a large serving of shiratake noodles and add some chicken and sometimes brocoli, which then makes it a 250 calorie meal that is soooo delish!! Let me know what you think :)

I just finished reading Sly Moves a book Sylvester has just recently published. Though he looks fantastic for 60 and so on and so forth. I didn't think highly of his book. I was surprised to find out he could write. I didn't even know he could read.
Anywhoosie...after having read his book I am unimpressed. Particularily after reading his opinion of Body For Life.
His pudding?? Gimmick. He wants a piece of the pie so to speak. I'm making my own puddin' thank you.

I've had the pudding and I thought it was okay. I thought it had a metallic taste since it's in one of those metal containers. I think the Myloplex pudding is similar in taste.
I bought mine at GNC and it was expensive, like $8.99 for 4, and I did get it during Gold Card savings week, so I think I got 20% off.
I think I ate a banana with mine because I love bananas with chocolate pudding.

I was a bit disappointed with Sly. He is my idol, but after i read the book he stressed that body for life is not that real, 12 weeks is just too soon to create your body for life, that it took him years to create his body from life (and states time line from rocky 2 and rocky 3)
And wait for it, sly is friends with bill, sly was even in body of work......

Making your own protein pudding is really easy and a LOT cheaper and yummier. Here's my recipe:
1 package sugar-free pudding mix
2 cups 1% milk
2 scoops protein powder
Mix it all together in a blender for 2 minutes and pour into 4 custard cups. Refrigerate. Calories: 125, Protein: 13, Carbs: 13, Fat: 2
YUMMY!! I gotta go make some now!

This is what I do. My kids were all in cross country and had alot of conditioning issues in a short amount of time.. take both legs and hold them out straight as you sit in a chair. then write the alphabet with you feet. Do it every thime you think about it when ever you are sitting. It will stretch those shins everywhich way. It really helps. It also helps to do it so you will not develope sore shins.

I have the same problems with my shins. I was training for the Phoenix marathon so I was running a lot. My shins would hurt so bad I could barely walk. I thought it would disappear with time, but it didn't. I had good shoes from the Running Company, and Agent 69 is right, they were ugly!! :)
I ended up having to go to the doctor and he told me I had stress fractures. There really isn't anything that made them go away besides time. I still run every once in a while, but I usually use the elliptical now.

I don't know if this is the best advice, but it worked for me...
I had BAD shin splints when I was training for my first 1/2 marathon. So, before I went to run, I took 3-4 Advil or Tylenol and it really helped. I did it every day for about 2 months, and now I don't even need it at all.

LOL! THAT'S why I'm glad I have a home gym!! I can make all the funny faces and loud noises I want, and no one can hear me!!
I think it helps to think of those first 12 reps as a "warmup". Then it doesn't seem quite so wimpy!
Body for Life Forum Message by hogken (35 posts) at 12:46 PM
its all about isolating the muscle with small weight and proper form. Ill bet those other guys are working out a lot longer than us. They not on BFL. they think the more weight and the longer the better=not true.
Body for Life Forum Message by RSDgirl (11 posts) at 01:38 PM
I'm glad this was brought up. I don't look at what weight others are putting on but I noticed people watching me. I just smiled. It is my first day but I was thinking about my last day of the challenge. I thought," just wait and see, then you will be asking me for my advice and how I changed so fast...almost overnight." This time will fly ,just you wait.
My first upper body work out went pretty well. It was nice having a program that is proven to work and not feeling like an idiot trying fto figure out what to do.
Body for Life Forum Message by fjcastro (12 posts) at 01:48 PM
I wouldn't worry about the amount of weight that anyone else is lifting. If you are, then you aren't focusing on what you should be doing. I do notice that other guys in the gym don't have proper form when they lift their weights. I start with 20 lbs myself and only go up to 30. For some reason, I just can't lift more. However, I am pressing 530 pounds (on my max 6x reps) on my leg presses so I don't feel so bad
Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (61 posts) at 07:05 PM
i can almost guarantee that no one is paying attention to what anyone else is lifting...
if they are there lifting, its for themselves and to get THEIR workout in. im sure they arent thinking "wow..look at the poor sap only lifting 20's". they are probably just spacing off, getting psyched up for their next set.
sometimes i will look at what a person is doing..not lifting, but the type of exercise they are doing at that moment. i've learned alot of cool new ways to lift by watching others.
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (302 posts) at 07:33 PM
I agree with Minka. Most of the people who think others are watching them or staring at them or amused by them just feel that way because they are newbies and are paranoid. Any time you go into a new environment, you just feel like you stick out and are conspicuous. That's human nature. On watching what others are doing, the key is not to watch what they're doing, but to watch what they look like--because if they look like most of the folks at the clubs I work out at, it's not worth imitating what they're doing! Take a look at Bill Phillips. Then, ask yourself again whether it's worth doing a workout like he recommends. Anyone can tweak something, but few can get better results as a novice than you can get by just following the program.

Hi all,
I can't seem to hit 10's in weight training. It seems like hitting a 10 would be simple enough (up the weights) but I am having problems...my arms get tired from holding the dumbbells before my legs get tired. However, I need to stick with dumbbells as I travel frequently for work and that is often all they have at a hotel.
I can hit my 10's in cardio (and in upper body)... but so far not in doing lower body.
Here is my current program:
Quads
Squats - 12, 12, 15, 20, 15 lbs
Step-ups - 20lbs
Hams
Lunges 8, 10, 15, 20, 15
Deadlifts 15lbs
Calves
One-leg raises 10, 12, 15, 20, 15
Angled Raise 15lbs
Abs
Crunches 0, 15, 20, 20
Plank - till colapse
Any advice would be appreciated.
Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (251 posts) at 10:08 AM
I would suggest holding as much weight as you feel your hands can, and up the reps till you fatigue. I had the same problem so I would do my reps w/ lower weights. Like 18reps, 15reps, 12reps, 10reps, 15reps,15reps. It seemed to do the trick, good luck :)
Body for Life Forum Message by DDRTeddy (829 posts) at 10:15 AM
ummmmmm
I would hold the 20#er and the 12# in the same hand and get 32#s in each hand... I know I must have big hands! well I put the 20s on the shoulders and place the 12#ers crossed over them. still on my shoulders... I know sounds hard.... it is, you must know what you are doing and not drop them...
I no longer even feel anything after I workout so I need to prob do what Snowboardingfairy said... hope I helped some.
Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (187 posts) at 03:26 PM
Check into a set of lifting straps. These are cloth straps that you wrap around the weight and your wrist to help support the heavy load.
I use straps on last sets when I know I'm close to hand fatiuge, but still have more juice in my legs.
Body for Life Forum Message by Schelli (53 posts) at 03:41 PM
Maybe if you try plyometrics on your squats and lunges - so using no weights you go into a squat and then push of the ground into the air and land softly in the squatting position again. You should reach a 10 doing sets of these and it doubles as a bit of a cardio workout. With lunges you go into a lunge, propell off the floor in dip into the other leg.
I find with calf raises I really have to focus on contracing my calf muscle on the way up to have a great 10 effect. But doing calf raises off a step so the heel sinks down on the down movement seems to make it a LOT harder.
Hope this helps!
Body for Life Forum Message by Crispywafers (18 posts) at 03:53 PM
I"ll check out the lifting straps...maybe that is the answer to my problems!
I will also try the plyometrics on Friday and using a step for the calf raises. Thanks for the help!

The beauty is that you can purchase whichever one you like...OR BOTH. I think they each have their place. I love BOTH programs. I don't think anybody can go wrong with either of them.
For me personally, I found BFL to be a great general introduction to the world of exercise and nutrition. BFFM was just the next step. Basically the same principals but with more reasoning and explanation behind the why's and how's of what you are doing.

I bought a Proform 400GL and it normal price was $700 +, but I got it for $420 at the Navy Exchange and with a 3 year extended warranty. The only thing that I can see that might bother me, it tends to drag alittle when you are at slow speeds but when you get up there, it goes just fine, maybe it is my WEIGHT on the belt itself! Ha HA!
Body for Life Forum Message by redhead75 (40 posts) at 06:21 AM
I had a Proform and he died about 3 weeks ago:( I had is for 6 years and I know my husband broke it. He puts it on max speed and runs like the wind!!! So I went to Sears and bought another Proform!! They are great treadmill for the price. I also bought the extended warranty so the little things that happen to mine will be covered. If I would have had this warranty with my last one I would have just gotten it totally replaced for free!!! I am smarter now that I am 30:)

A competitor will find a way to win. Competitors take bad breaks and use them to drive themselves just that much harder. Quitters take bad breaks and use them as reasons to give up. It's all a matter of pride.
Who said it? I will give you a clue and bonus quote, just because it made me laugh this morning when I read it. The person who made the above quote is in the same profession as the person who made this quote:
You can make a lot of money in this game. Just ask my ex-wives. Both of them are so rich that neither of their husbands work.
- Lee Trevino
Enjoy, and have a great BFL day!

I'm thinking about entering my results into the "official challenge". I have a few questions I hope someone can answer for me. 1) Using the EAS, BFL, Myoplex products, do I have to use one constantly, like, weekly or is once in a while througout the challenge okay?(they are expensive and I really don't like them either, but would use them periodically if necessary). 2) Do I need to use the journals they provide on the website/book to keep record of food/workouts or can I use my own?
Honestly, I'm not real interested in winning, but I feel that entering might be fun just to see what would happen! I'm seeing some pretty great results so far and I'm only into week 6! I feel like a winner already! It's so awesome!

2. No need to use any official journal

I was at barnes and noble last night, reading. This guy comes to me and starts off:
You are here a lot
Me: Yes. I am pretty much always here
My friend and I went to Canada and he mentioned you.
Me: Oh
Yeah, you were wearing spider tights, and dressed in all black. You have never seen him but he liked you. He was too shy to talk to you, so I said if I saw you again, I would talk to you.
Me: Uhm, okay. Yes, I do recall them...
Him: Well, they were black over. I am sure if you went home, you would see them...It was a couple of months back
Me: I am sure I would, but
Him: We were in Canada......
Me: Yes, I know, he mentioned me and my tights
Him: Well, I don't blame you. My friend is not a guy who can get girls and he is shy. I am not gay or anything, he is not handsome either, so I knew this would not work out
Me (looking at him incredously): uhm, okay.
Him: Yeah, you were wearing tights that day. We were in Canda and he was like, hey you remember that girl. Oh, yeah, the cute Indian girl...
Me: this is the weirdest conversation I ever had,and if you don't mind I am going back to reading my book.

I was at barnes and noble last night, reading. This guy comes to me and starts off:
HIM:You are here a lot
ME: Yes. I am pretty much always here
HIM: My friend and I went to Canada and he mentioned you. Me: Oh Yeah HIM: you were wearing spider tights, and dressed in all black. You have never seen him but he liked you. He was too shy to talk to you, so I said if I saw you again, I would talk to you. ME: Uhm, okay. Yes, I do recall them... Him: Well, they were black over. I am sure if you went home, you would see them...It was a couple of months back ME: I am sure I would, but- HIM: We were in Canada...... ME: Yes, I know, he mentioned me and my tights HIM: Well, I don't blame you. My friend is not a guy who can get girls and he is shy. I am not gay or anything, but he is not handsome either, so I knew this would not work out.. Bye.
The tights in question were diamond shaped tights, instead of stockings

Glad you ladies got a laugh out of him. Now, seriously, how do you want to be approached by a man at Barnes&Nobles? Give me what you'd want a guy to say that wouldn't be offensive and allow you to feel safe. No jokes, this is very important stuff to us men who have fragile egos and don't like to be put down (how's that for Oprah-style openness??). Thanks. Jim.

Im gonna agree with Jim- it wasnt actually a pick up- well maybe a third party pick up....guys have a hard enough time, given that they are expected to be the aggressor....
The guy was trying to relate some commonality ( which I guess were the tights)nothing wrong weith that- I mean, he didnt ask to lick them right?
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (570 posts) at 03:24 PM
Well Jim...it would all depend on which section I was in at the time of the approach.
Diet section? - I'd feel it was a pity approach and you'd strike out.
Cook book section? - You're a shovanistic pig who would expect me to do all the cooking...no go.
Self Help? I wouldn't even hear what you were saying. I'd just be wondering how much baggage you have.
Computer section? Geek...move on
Decorating Section? Gay...you must like my shoes.
The best approach always comes from the guy working the coffee counter. I know he's there because he has to be.

Rie, you crack me up! That would be too damned freaky..
Him: yeah you were wearing those tights. I really wanted to lick them. Can I the next time you wear them?
You: Freak.
So, what exactly was the point of his wayward conversation and what the hell does canada have to do with it?? I'm really confused.
I love this site!!

Ugh, I am really struggling. First of all, to be fair, I have not given BFL the effort that I should. Its quite minimal actually. Then yesterday I spent some quality time, just me and the mirror. It was awful, absolutely awful. I think that I am having trouble gettings tarted because I am just so dusgusted with where I am now. It makes noe sense, I know, because I see all of the amazing transformations on this site...I just cant seem to get to the root of what is holding me back.
I work full tyime, and am also a part time graduate student. I know that being healthier would give me more energy to handle all the things I need to since my schedule is jam packed, and I am always tired. Last night I made food for the week and put it into separate containers so I do feel prepared for the week. I guess even if I cant get all the workouts in at least eating the EFL way will help.
anyway, just felt that I needed to vent. after really lookinga t myself yesterday I am so reluctant to take pictures, but I so want to look better, and fit into my clothes, and be healthy!!

Bella....you CAN do this! We are all here to help and support you, remember that :)
You took the 1st step already-I know how hard it can be to just take the time to seriously LOOK at yourself in the mirror. I still have so many days that I HATE to do it, but slowly the "good mirror days" are catching up w/ the bad!
With such a busy schedule Im assuming that you pretty much schedule out your day? If you do, make sure you SCHEDULE your MEALS and workouts into your day. It might sound crazy but it really helped me the very 1st time I did BFL.(I was workin 60+hours a week and going to school fulltime.) Sometimes it meant scheduleing my cottage cheese&yogurt to be eaten as I walked between classes, but as long as it was IN WRITING I stuck to it. Hope that helps....
Stay strong-and we're here for ya!

welcome to a little thing called life...how utterly well hard it is. I am in the same boat: I let things happen, and I realize that is because it is scary to assume responsiblity and you can't imagine things ever changing. They do: they either get better or worse. Also, just working is never fun in itself. Go back to that vision you have of yourself and instead of letting the transformations acting as a reminder of what seems impossible, use them as guidelines as to what is possible.
Body for Life Forum Message by janine (1 posts) at 07:00 AM
HI bella2be!
I am a life coach, so I thought I would send a little exercise your way. . . .You can evaluate your current status by walking through the following six steps:
(1) Outcomes: What results am I looking for?
(2) Benefits: Why is this important? (Payoff—What's in it for me? How will this change affect other people in my life?)
(3) Barriers: What might prevent my success?
(4) Support: What resources are available?
(5) Approach: What steps must I take to achieve my goals? (Be specific—who, when, duration)
(6) Evaluation: How will I know I've reached my goal?
After you have answered those questions, then stand up and decribe out loud how you currently feel in your body. How you feel when you look in the mirror and in the closet. What is your inner-voice saying?
Now step 5 feet in front of where you were just standing and look back at where you were. You are now standing in the future you! You have accomplished all your goals and you feel great. Describe out loud how you now feel in your new body. What is your self-talking saying now? etc. Now look back at the old you (the one that is "in a bad place") and say out loud how did you get to the future you? What steps did you take to make sure that you did not fail? When did you take this steps? Get exact dates and times written down. . .
Hope this works! You can do it! I believe in YOU!

Bella, if I could reach through this computer screen and give you a big hug of encouragement, I would do it. We are all unhappy with our lives whenever we consider undertaking a challenge like Body for Life. If we were comfortable with ourselves we would never change! We change because the pain associated with changing is LESS than the pain associated with remaining the same. So, you want to change… that’s great!
Start by not being so hard on yourselves. We all start wherever we are. I was morbidly obese and on my way to an early grave. But, one-day-at-a-time, I changed. You can do it if you commit to the transformation and stay focused on your goals. We all tend to focus on what we don’t want rather than focusing on our goals. Focus on today and improve your life today. Tomorrow will come and you can focus on tomorrow then. But let’s get through today, first.
Also, Body for Life is for LIFE. It makes no promises of having a 5% body fat after one week. Just the opposite is true. Your transformation will be slow and sometime painful… but when you complete your journey and look back at the challenges, you’ll realize that the ‘pain’ associated with your change was worth it.
Good luck and never… NEVER… give up! TJ

I've been there, Bella, and I know how you feel. You can do this, I know you can, and you know you can. If you're like me, that long look in the mirror will be on your mind for a while, and hopefully that will help you take another baby step toward giving BFL the effort and attention it requires. You've taken a big step by preparing your meals for the week. After that, try to get a workout in. And then another. You will feel better as you progress!
We are definitely here to help you and support you, so whatever you need, ask!
You CAN do this!

Hi Bella, sandiepooh here, I can't say that I know exactly how you feel but I know what if feels like to be lost. Someone once said "do not be anxious over the next day for each day has it's own anxieties." (jesus) And it's true, sometimes we hear you can do it I believe in you, we here don't give up but it's not helpful if we don't believe in ourselves and if we want to fail. My grandmother said to me I am a sabotager, everytime I am losing weight doing great, I get scared and then go off the wagon so to speak. She says it doesn't matter how others have faith in me if I don't have faith in me and act on that I have already failed. Look Bella, I am going to be honest with you if it was easy everyone would be where they wanted to be by now. Take one step at a time. Make little challenges for yourself to accomplish. On this site it is wonderful we are not competing against one another we are competing against ourselves. We all have an evil person on one side of us saying no you won't have what you want but we also have a good person on the other side, saying I have to do this for me. To be the person I always wanted to be. Look! everyone has had someone in their lives that let them down, don't be that person to yourself. You have probably sacrificed your comfort for others, what will it take for you to do the same for yourself. I am not saying be selfish. I always say this "To thy ownself be true" start with being honest with yourself and you will make things happen. If I can be of assistance I am here for you. Take care, and believe in you. Not because others do but because you want too.

You are all amazing. I identified with something each and every one of you said! I felt like a big whiner after I wrote that post this morning. I picture Porter Freeman as the little drill sergent on my shoulder saying stop making excuses and go out and do it :) But I guess we are all here from time to time.
janine, I will definietly tak ethe time to go through the life coaching steps your outlined. A lot of people (myself included) probably spend a loit of time thinking aout what they wish were true, but your steps seem to outline it in realterms.
Some of it, like Dana said is about scheduling--yes, I write out my whole day! I have to otherwise I'd forget my head! I'll put my meals in those schedules too, great idea.
And it is true, its a process (for LIFE) and baby steps are still steps. I think I really need to concentrate on the one day at a time concept!!
And, I'll take pictures. I wont have time to until tomorrow night but I am promising I will.
Thanks you guys! xoxoox

Just the very fact that you posted what you did- trying to be honest with yourself -is a step in the right direction, seems to me. Doing these challenges has been a challenge for me, too...don't feel like the only person who hasn't seen that 'miracle change' happen yet. It hasn't happened for me, either, but I'm determined that I will trust the process. You CAN prevail over doubts and adversity and make BFL happen in a positive way in your life. Hang in there.

Hi Everyone!
I am back w/ questions, I have actually been doing ok but not by the book that's for sure, I had a bad last year to much junk to list and I am sure you don't want to hear it all anyway LOL.
Here's the deal, in 4-5 weeks I am having surgery ( UGH ) anyhooo I want to do BFL 100% until then, I am hoping to lose some weight since Im my highest in a year ( like to lose 8-10 pds do you think its possible ? ) anyway once I have surgery I can't do cardio until 4 wks. then no weights until min. 8 weeks post op, will this completely mess me up on BFL ? I can eat the same way no problem nice & clean but what if I am not working out will I gain or what ? I think that's what scares me the most. Maintaining or losing would be good while recovering and I know it has to be clean clean clean :)
I hope this makes sense... off to get my coffee & my 1st meal of the day being Oatmeal & CC.
Thank you for taking the time,
Laura :)
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (368 posts) at 10:48 AM
First, it is absolutely possible to lose 8-10 pounds in that time, if you are totally focused and by the book.
Secondly, I seriously doubt you will gain weight by eating clean, even if you're not working out. You will likely not lose much, but your concern should be with healing up so that when your body is ready, you can ease back into working out BFL style. It's for life. Don't worry about not working out when you obviously can't! When you're able, then worry about that! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by hogken (35 posts) at 12:22 PM
i would recommend if you really want to change? dont wait the 4 or 5 weeks until surgery. go and attack it now and you will feel better and have more energy and quite possibly recover and heal faster with a more healthy body. 4 to 5 weeks is a long time to just wait. only my advice!
Hogken
Body for Life Forum Message by Laura (181 posts) at 02:27 PM
Oh I totally agree, I don't want to sit around and do nothing for those weeks and I think like you both said that maybe I will heal faster & better because I will be healthier & stronger for it :) that is why I want to hit it hard and I am, I had a great HIIT workout this morning & meals to today are going great as well.
I was just more concerned about having to lay off the workouts while recovering but like J-Dub said this is for Life I don't know why I didn't think of that, DUH! LOL. Even if this takes me longer this time around I will still be looking mighty good come summer, woohoo! =) Thank you for the support as always,
Laura =)

Have you any of you heard the term being "unzipped" following childbirth? Following my first pregnancy, I was told my stomach muscles had been torn/split/pulled--whatever to a third degree. If you lay on your back, place your fingers just below your belly button and crunch....you will be able to feel the split...if you have one. One finger width is minor, usually goes back with exercise, 2 and 3 are more major.
Trying to figure out what this really means.....will my muscles never go back together?
This was 4 years ago and I have had another child in between. Since starting my first Challenge in September, it is safe to say I didn't do many, if any, sit ups.
I can feel my stomach muscles when doing situps...I know they are there and working (even under the fat), but with this "torn" or "split" muscle....how does this grow back together?
Anyone know what I am talking about? I don't know how to even research this. But I definately still have three fingers width under my belly button in the muscles.

The separation is called diastasis. I just checked online, and apparently there is a book called "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" by Julie Tupler that teaches breathing techniques and exercises designed for that issue. Wonder how well it works - anyone use the exercises in the book?
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (909 posts) at 12:39 PM
oh...thanks...now I can actually do research. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (65 posts) at 01:09 PM
I had that too, to fix it I was told to do crunches, and while doing them instead of putting your hands by your head, criss cross them over your abdominal muscles, squeezing/holding them gently but firmly together as you crunch.
Body for Life Forum Message by stn53 (5 posts) at 01:11 PM
My wife just child number 4, and she had diastasis so bad it put her on bedrest. Her doctor said that rarely does it go back on its own. Most of the time it requires surgery, and that is elective. Her physical therapist has told her that exercise will help pull it back together, but it will never be the same again. My wife says it is just one of costs of having children. But our new little girl is so worth it.

So I just saw my friend's baby pics today. Who just had her first baby. Oh it brought back memories and lately I have been having those baby feelings. You know wanting one again. Oh the warm and fuzzy feelings....
They are now G-O-N-E! I have been snapped back to reality as I was laying on the floor doing "the check". Wondering if this is why I can't seem to make my lower part of my tummy loose that mysterious little bump? Nope it's still a pocket of jelly fat. I think I did have this happen though.
But thanks for reminding me why I want to get completely tiny and lean before I go down the road of child #2. Thanks ... I needed something to snap me back to reality today! LMAO....
I feel ya though I was freaking out doing the research because I have known about it and have always been scared of having it. Would your doctor tell you if you had it after the birth?
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2349 posts) at 01:24 PM
My doctor told me about this too when I asked him why my stomach muscles were getting so well formed but it "sticks out". As what stn53 said above, you can tighten it somewhat but if its split, its split and same thing, surgically it can be fixed with a long scar up the centre of you belly.
I've worked my abs pretty damn hard for a year but they have "built" around this line that actually seems to run moreso above my belly button as opposed to below. This seemed to be more prominent after my second; I don't think I really noticed as much after the first (both pregnancies I was huge but I guess we all are at that point LOL). In some lighting I can actually notice it visibly - I notice it because "its different" than before. With the amount of work I've done and what I've accomplished which is by no means flat, concave & pre-pregnancy I can't imagine "breathing" myself into anything different. When I say working hard I'm talking 500 - 600 reps of various exercises every other day. If there's any kind of breathing thats gonna do it I'd like to know!!!!!!!

My sister in law had a tummy tuck a few years ago (after lipo a couple years before that)....she said her abdominal muscles were split so badly that they were basically in two pieces, one piece on each of her sides, if you can picture that. Hers was repaired surgically with a scar that runs across her belly (like a smile, from hip to hip, does not show in a bikini). They put some sort of mesh in there to sew the abdominal muscles to.
Initially, there was a big differencein her midsection, but she has since put on some weight and exercises very little, so to me, she looks much like she did before (except for the new bigger boobs that came with the tummy tuck, lol). It was not an extreme makeoever by any means. Of course her surgeon told her that surgery was the ONLY way to repair her abs, but I'm not sure I believe that. It's like asking a mechanic if your car needs a tune-up....
I guess my point, if I have one, is that even with that surgery, she still does not have a flat belly. My theory is that exercise and diet can do so much more for it than the surgery, and if you're gonna have the surgery, work out like heck before and plan on working out (forever) afterwards.
Body for Life Forum Message by Suz2lose (86 posts) at 01:50 PM
I will always have that stomach issue. I have three children and the third weighed 10 lbs...so I have no doubt that my tummy will be 100% unless I use the surgical solution. I don't care too much for that excess skin and muscle funk, but I'll take it...war injuries! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (149 posts) at 02:09 PM
I'm split from the sternum all the way down. Complete. Basically it is one gigantic hernia. Sometimes my guts get pinched when I sit up too quickly or do some other movements. It can be really uncomfortable. I was told the only solution was surgery. I've lived with it. My tummy will NEVER get the hard 6 pack. But it doesn't have to be fat either.
I can't do all tummy exercises or full push ups as it forces my insides through the opening.
I wish I had another c section with the last baby because I would have had it repaired.
anyway, you can live with it. You won't get the perfect abs and your back can feel a bit unsupported. But if you stay slim, you don't have to have a pot belly either.
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (909 posts) at 02:23 PM
Okay, so do sit ups hugging your tummy...if that doesn't work...then go in for a surgical procedure in which you have a scar running up your stomach?
Haven't they perfected this procedure yet to do a bikini cut?
And wouldn't this be considered a tummy tuck?
And my Dr did tell me I had some muscle issues on my stomach after the birth, but frankly she was more concerned about ripped insides.
The more time passes from the first pregnancy and childbirth....the more problems I realized I have that are a direct cause from childbirth. That first one was WAY hard on me.
But anyway....going to the Dr this week. I think I will ask her about the stomach then. It has been 2 1/2 years since I delivered my last child, so I would think by now the "gap" would be a little less.
Body for Life Forum Message by nola (116 posts) at 03:46 PM
Teresa....my sil's surgery was called a tummy tuck and it is a "bikini" scar, though a quite large one. She also had about 10 inches of skin removed (yuck). And I do remember her referring to it (the separation) as a type of hernia.

Now MEN you REALLY get to see what we go through!!! To bear your children! ROFLMAO!!!!
T-I would not stress about it to much. Just do your best to get as lean as you can. My abs are very strong and I exercise the you know what out of them. I breath correctly and have learned that ab exercises don't require exaggerated curl motions. Little movements can really help a lot keeping the lower abs contracted and pulled in tightly. Think of Belly button to the spine or a completely flat belly while doing sit ups or Roman Chairs.
Great flat tummy....huge hips and butt and legs. Not a goodlook! :).....

Teresa, you might be pleasantly surprised after a good bit of ab work and lower bf% and not even need a "tuck." We've all seen some pretty amazing before and after photos on this site....I think you can do amazing things WITHOUT surgery.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (149 posts) at 04:57 PM
Teresa, I agree. Don't even THINK about surgery until you are at your ideal weight. You'd be amazed at how much we can do on our own. I'll never get the 6 pack abs, but they aren't terrible. Certainly not worth surgery.
Now, if I happened to be having another c-section, then I'd have him/her go in and repair the torns abdominus rectus. But otherwise...you can do amazing things with exercise and diet alone.
I also don't think a little extra tummy is so unattractive... especially if the woman wearing it is fit and running after a couple of kids!

OMG, Framed, I looked at your profile. If you are "split", it surely does NOT SHOW!

thanks. but I have no muscles in the middle. It is as if I have an opening the size and shape of a stock pot without muscles underneath. I'm going to try my hardest to see what I get. But I don't think I could ever have Cheryl Muhr's abs.
I also can't do a lot of the various ab exercises, they make my guts poke through. Yuk.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2349 posts) at 05:34 PM
Framed - I saw your pics too. The way you described it is NOT what you look like - you look pretty damn good!!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!
I did have the "guts" poking through too at one time but that has changed alot and really no longer does unless I purposely try to do this in like a leg raise position so there is hope. Nonetheless, your abs look amazing.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (149 posts) at 06:35 PM
Thanks Flower. I'd love to have your definition, but I don't think it's going to happen. You have that nice line down the middle and two on each side (to start the 6 pack). I can't get that middle thing going as there is no muscle in the middle. But I'll keep at it and see how far it goes.
I think no matter WHAT child birth has left you with, you can do a lot with exercise and diet. My sister had a tummy tuck after twins and it is unnaturally flat. Too flat! I'd rather carve out as best I can with what I've got.
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (909 posts) at 09:37 PM
OH yeah....I am in no way thinking about a tummy tuck for real (this is only in my dream world....I also just wake up at 12% body fat and smokin in that dream..)
and I am not so much stressing over it, I just noticed it today because I was poking around while do my LBWO and remembered what I was told.
I have a large tummy because I have too much fat, but I have often wondered why my tummy feels hard under the flab. I think it is a combination of bowels (yes, gross...need the dr.natura, and this). More of a speculation that anything.
I am glad so many people new exactly what I was talking about!

Hi everyone !!!!
I have a quick question, I have been taking the supplement Lean System 7. What I was wondering though...Can I take Betagen along with it, or does that undo what the LS 7 is doing. My hubby, DOCHARVEY..(yes, he is sooooo cute !!!!,) has had great results w/the betagen, and now that my bf is down to 18.5%, I would like to start seeing more muscle definition. My goal is to get down to 15% BF. I don't want to undo anything I've done, but if I can get some extra results w/ the Betagen, that would be great.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated !!!! Thanks!

I'm nit sure because I am unfamiliar with Lean system 7. Perhaps the makers of LS7 could provide the info, or EAS may be able to answer the question.

Thank you whoever voted for me. I know I probably won't last on the top 20 for the whole month, but it really is nice seeing myself there at this very moment. It makes me feel like I am accomplishing something. And the private messages I have received are so encouraging. Seriously..thank you from the bottom of my heart. When you hit rock bottom and lose every ounce of self esteem & even hope..and then find something in yourself to make you realize thats not where you want to be..or for that matter who you want to be..its amazing the determination and commitment you can pull from the depths of your soul.
Thanks for making my day and seeing my hard work has not gone unnoticed. *hugs*

Congratulations!!!! I'm impressed with the amount of weight you've lost (not that weight matters, right? It's body fat...I keep fogetting that one.)
Loved your bio comments from the kiddies. They do have a way with words don't they? My daughter looked at me a couple of weeks ago, put her little hand on my butt and told me it was as big as a beach ball!! Gee thanks.
Then a couple of weeks later she asked me why my legs had those "bumps." So I gave her the simple cellulite definition and she replied, "It makes you look fluffy."

O.k.
I am starting week 9 today. I am down 15 pounds. Happy with that. I am loosing inches. Happy with that. But my body fat went up this week .6%. I am not happy with that. I have been exercising at least 4 times a week. I alway make the weight lifting but not the 20 workouts. My eating was not the greatest for two weeks. I was back on track last week pretty good. I guess I am hoping for faster results. 4 more weeks left in c1. What should I expect for these last weeks?
Thanks for listening.
Diane

Actually, I was only kidding--because there's no way from your thread message to tell what you were asking about really.
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (302 posts) at 07:23 PM
Assuming you are doing the diet and workouts correctly, you should see significant changes in the last 4 weeks. Most women do, again assuming that you're doing it the way the book recommends. The teeny little change in body fat you mention means nothing. It's nowhere near an exact science, nor is it necessarily accurate at all, no matter which method you use.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (368 posts) at 07:27 PM
I don't think you should change anything based on one body fat measurement. No body fat measurement is 100% accurate, first of all. At least not one you can do while you're still alive. :) Many methods depend on your level of hydration, which means it can change regularly. The best thing to do is to watch the trend over time, but never jump to make changes after seeing something you don't like after only one week.
If you hit it hard for the next 4 weeks, you will see great results. But the eating has to be right on, and you have to get those workouts in!

Ok, I said this in a previous thread but am still feeling bad about it so wanted to post a quick confession:
Today, I cheated. *gasp* Yes, its true! Yesterday was my free day and I ate 1 off limit item. Today was NOT my free day. BUT, I was feeling sorry for myself and went to the breakroom and saw this wonderful, homemade, WARM right out of the oven Apple Pie. I stared at it for abotut 5 minutes. I walked out and then walked back in...and then....I tasted it. MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm....it was sooooo good. Then I ate a little piece. Then a little piece became a bigger, little piece. Before I knew it, I ate a big HUGE slice. I justified it by saying "it's my birthday, I can have a piece of pie." I know...not a good reason.
I did come home and have a totally perfect dinner and drank all my water and the rest of my meals today were right on. I just wanted to come clean so that tomorrow my day will start off on track.
Thanks for listening.
Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!!

I hope you feel better. Next time you have a free day.. eat what you really want so you don't feel deprived. Or take the pie home and save it for free day.. or don't go into the break room. Ever.
Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (65 posts) at 09:25 PM
umm birthday??? GIRL you can have a piece of pie on your birthday!!! (someone elses birthday..maybe not a good idea since its always SOMEONES birthday..or an un-birthday..nope can't do it, but your OWN bday..why not! LOL) Add in an extra cardio this week..no sweat and happy birthday!

I scheduled my professional pics in 3 weeks.
Nothing kicks you into seriously high gear like doing this...suddenly, every moment, every ounce of anything you put in your mouth...every workout is crucial. Now its not just me and my husband taking pics with the digital in the bedroom.
Man, I'm syked AND nervous all at once. aaah!!

WOW! What an awesome meeting tonight in Tulsa. We had a total of five people show up. Three regulars here in tracker, along with two new people that read a flyer that 1leanmom put up in her gym.
We sat and got to know each other a little, and share stories on the challenges we each face, and the little victories we have achieved. Posting on this forum, and PM's are great, but getting the opportunity to sit down for an hour with other BFLers you've met her on tracker is simply awesome.
One person left before we got a picture, but I posted a pic on my profile under week 9 of the four us that stayed. Thanks to all those in attendance. I look foward to seeing you all again next month.
Stay the Course
Brian

BFL says to have veggies w/at least 2 meals a day. It's not part of the protein/carb servings. They're veggies, you can have them w/every meal if you want I assume, as long as they aren't the starchy kind.
Body for Life Forum Message by GlennH (83 posts) at 07:05 PM
That is correct. AT LEAST are the key words here. With regard to the green veggies.....eat all you want. Nobody ever got fat from eating broccoli and green beans, unless they are covered in cheese sauce or bacon fat! :)

Hi Michelle,
I bought the Eating for Life book and the recipes are definately not just for maintenance. In the preface, Bill just gives you a more detailed overview of the Eating for Life principles before listing all the recipes for each meal. I made the turkey meat loaf this week and it was delicious!
And the ideas are great. Escpecially midmeals and snacks.

I eat them all the time and continue to loose BF% the key is portion control, as I think most of the portion sizes listed are for your average male, which not the same as a portion for me.
Body for Life Forum Message by LincolnJenn (72 posts) at 02:02 PM
I have been using the EFL book almost exclusively. I have lost fat each week and I am on week 6 now. The trick is to not go by the portions in the book. For me, I cut the portion by about 1/3. So if the portion size for the "Green Chile" is 1.5 cups, I give myself 1 cup. So far it has been working....you will love the book!
Body for Life Forum Message by cookie1135 (1565 posts) at 02:05 PM
I used many of the EFL recipes during my challenge with great results. Just remember to use the palm and fist method for measuring your portions sizes. Best wishes too you!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Janie (27 posts) at 04:59 PM
I also use EFL almost exclusively and love it. I do try to stay away from too many "desserts" but once in awhile they are a lifesaver- the pudding especially! And the recipes are whole meals which makes planning and shopping super easy. And, they all taste great! Highly recommend you get it!
