Ok gang, I'm almost ready...(I know I said this before)...but I need some help from you guys testing out the photo gallery format. The site is still under construction and I haven't integrated the messageboard, but the BuddyChat is working well! You will need to register for the site first before going into buddy chat, as well as posting pics...but it should be pretty quick. I think the way we should have people post their progress pics is by creating their own "Gallery" first with the title "Your Name Mini-Challenge Date" What do you think? Once we get this part worked out I'll clean up the area and we'll set up the paypal to increase the "jackpot". I'm going to work on getting some prizes in the meantime, but the focus on the first one might be for people who want to go on the cruise (may only raise enough for one person, but we can see). I'm still working out how this first one would work, since I want people who have already made their transformation happen to be allowed to enter somehow...but I don't want others to be discouraged. Thoughts? oops, almost forgot the link (excuse the mess as it's still under construction, but it will be fun once it is up): www.bflbuddies.com Feedback is ALWAYS welcome. eSteve

Thread: Bra sizes? (314 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by llangkamp (80 posts) at 12:38 PM:
I had to go in and get professionally fitted for a new bra -- NOTHING was fitting since I have lost it during this challenge. I spent about 45 minutes there, and tried on about 45 bras. It is complicated how they size the bras, but I tried on everything from a 32D to a 36B. Some puckered up top, some bumped in back, some were way too small, some did weird things that I'd rather not get into. Out of the entire store, the only thing that fit me (almost) was a demi-cup 36B (7 weeks ago, I was wearing a 32D) Anyway, I was talking to the fitter, Jan, and she said most women don't wear bras that fit them properly, and just because you wear a 34 C in one style, it doesn't mean you wear the same size in another. Unfortunately, she told me that if I was planning on losing more weight or toning up, I would have to be refitted and probably wouldn't be able to wear the size I was buying. At $38 a pop, I'm thinking I'll just get one until I get to where I want to be... Lisa

Body for Life Forum Message by busy91 (5 posts) at 12:50 PM:
I can't remember for sure, but the first time I did it, I think I only lost an inch and didn't go down a cup size, but everyone is different. I wouldn't mind losing now since I'm busting out of my bras, but I think I am going to wait until I get near goal to even buy another bra.

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (66 posts) at 01:28 PM:
Corinne- The website www.plussizebras.org has a GREAT section on how to measure yourself correctly. Most women don't wear the right size and you'll find it makes a HUGE difference when you know what size you're really looking for.

Well, I make a kick-butt lasagna they all like. They also love the tacos we do as well (ground lean turkey, etc...) I also make a good chicken pita pizza... actually, my kids eat pretty much everything BFL that I make, unless it has shrimp in it. And if I make salmon I can't keep them out of it. I have the only kids I know who at dinner ask me if it's ok to eat the veggies FIRST!

Body for Life Forum Message by reesemortensen (24 posts) at 07:29 AM: TEAM D Posting-POINTS
Hi! This Thread is to post Our points earned for the week. I give you again the RULES: 1 POINT if you post your measurements (this is for your benefit because we say good things about you when you do and besides...you get a point for it) 0.5 POINT for each of your workouts. 6 workouts per week x 0.5 = 3 POINTS 1 POINT for eating clean (excluding Free Day) and drinking your water all week. For those that may ask....if you think it's a cheat, then it probably was. So...you could give your team 5 POINTS each week. We are on the honor system....but....your measurements will be the tell-all if you are fibbing. If you are not currently assigned to a team, please feel free to play along. When we post the results on a thread, just tell everyone how many points you earned for yourself that week! 1. Post your measurements on your PROFILE each MONDAY (if you cant monday, try at maximum for WEDNESDAY. As it will give you points). 2. Count how many points you got. 3. Post at this thread how many points you earned for the week, and say that you posted your measurements. I WILL CHECK YOUR PROFILES TO BE SURE YOU POSTED´EM. Good luck! Take care, Reese

Thread: Argh! Anybody else experiencing skin breakouts? (77 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (374 posts) at 09:19 AM: Argh! Anybody else experiencing skin breakouts?
Can someone PLEASE tell me why, at my advanced age, I am once again afflicted with the complexion of a 16 year-old? I'm not eating all the junk that is commonly thought to cause acne. However, since BFL has been the huge change that correlates with my new-and-improved (HA!!!) skin, I wonder if it's related. Anyone else care to admit to same, or have an idea of what's causing this? In the meantime, I'm calling my broker to buy stock in whomever makes Stridex. :(

Body for Life Forum Message by gemthing (61 posts) at 09:30 AM:
Oh yeah, I've had some major skin changes. My skin's been oily since I was a teenager, and now it's become normal/sensitive. I'm breaking out a bunch, and I can't use any products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide because they're drying out my face majorly! I've had to switch cleansers, drop my normal Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle Anti-blemish stuff, and add a heavier moisturizer for night time. I think all the crap that's stored in our fat cells is being released when the fat's burned off. All the nastiness in there is going straight to our faces to ooze out. Bleah. Of course, all the good stuff stored in there is being release too, like all the fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K). Don't know what they're doing to us. Of course, a more likely cause is that we're sweating more and not washing our faces enough :) I find that when I wash my face twice a day, consistently, my skin clears up. I'm just not good at keeping up with it. With the night-time moisturizer I'm using now, I think I might even need to wash my face before I work out in the morning so it doesn't get all clogged. We'll see. Good luck with yours!

Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (452 posts) at 09:44 AM:
as you're building muscles this is causing your body to increase the amount of testosterone it produces. Testosterone is one of the things responsible for acne.

Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (882 posts) at 12:17 PM:
Release of Toxins from burning fat. Fat stores several Toxins and when you burn it it is released through sweat i.e. your pores and it can get clogged on the way out and hence the break out. Yes it is wonderful to feel 15 again! Pass me the Oxy Clean! LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by derek145 (35 posts) at 12:41 PM:
Keep a towel with you during your workouts to wipe off/down. Don't wipe away sweat with your hands. Take a shower immediately after your workout. Invest in a pore cleanser, and don't use regular soap on your face. While not total solutions these things do help to minimize the problem.

Thread: Body Fat Reduction Goal? (91 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (42 posts) at 09:33 AM: Body Fat Reduction Goal?
So I just got my body fat composition at mybodycomp.com and it is approx 23%. What is a reasonable goal for the last remaining 6 weeks of my first challenge? Would under %20 be reasonable? Thanks, Linn

Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (452 posts) at 09:49 AM:
I think so..plus a good goal should always be 50% obtainable that way if you make it you know you gave everything you had to get there

Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (42 posts) at 09:52 AM:
So do you think I should have a more aggressive goal?

Body for Life Forum Message by reesemortensen (24 posts) at 09:58 AM:
MMM think about losing 0,5-0,8% every week working very hard, losing above 1,2% is really hard. That would mean a competitor, doing cardio twice daily. So, to be honest, aim to lose 4% maximum 6%. Take care, Reese (TEAM D COACH)

Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (42 posts) at 10:15 AM:
Thanks Reese. I will do my body fat measurements in 2 or 3 weeks to check my progress then. That is helpful the weekly range. Linn

Body for Life Forum Message by reesemortensen (24 posts) at 10:37 AM:
One last thing, the only way to really know what bodyfat you are losing, is with calipers, is actually more accurate. With measurements, it can fluctuate, you can gain mass and not lose fat, and with measurement testing, it will tell you that you gained fat. Or you can gain mass and lose fat and it wont show. So try get a caliper. Go to www.bodybuilding.com they have a store with calipers, and its cheap, i think $13. Its worth! Take care Reese (TEAM D COACH)

Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (42 posts) at 10:44 AM:
I have the calipers, but I am not good at taking the measurements. The have fluctuated significantly each time I have taken them. Any hints? I might pay for a professional to do them at the end of 12 weeks.

Body for Life Forum Message by reesemortensen (24 posts) at 10:54 AM:
Yes i can help you, but listen, caliper is much more accurate than bodyfat by measurements. I am a bodybuilder, so i need make the most accurate. You should take the measurements 3-5 times at the same place, and get atleast 2 times the same reading. Lets put 3 times, you get 18-19-18,1 mm. Ok, will you put 19? No, you will put 18,5. Try pick up the fat only, practice practice and practice. And try make caliper reading every week. Dont wait up to 12 weeks. Because you might not lose bodyfat as you think, and you will have time to adjust your diet and exercise. Thread: Need a laugh? Common misconceptions revealed... (98 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by llangkamp (80 posts) at 10:42 AM: Need a laugh? Common misconceptions revealed...

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it...don't  waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?  Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine,  that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger.  You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO ....... Cocoa beans ... another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets and remember... "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - strawberries in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming - WOO HOO! What a Ride!"

ENJOY TODAY!  Lisa

Thread: calorie counting (56 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Cheri (47 posts) at 11:06 AM: calorie counting
I have been confused by some of the post saying you should count calories,I was wondering how many should I have each day so being confused I started rereading my BFL book, could not find the breakdown, so I called, Surprise! They said not to count, just stay within portion size, and I will do fine yea! I don't have to count. Cheri

Body for Life Forum Message by dani_parker (116 posts) at 11:09 AM:
If you want to count calories, go to the BFL site and click on the Exercise Tab. From there, click on tools and calculators. Then enter your weight and look up what they say you should be taking in on a daily basis. I counted calories for a few weeks because I wasn't eating ENOUGH! Now that I know the general counts of all my regular foods, I don't count much any more. The BFL book does not recommend calorie counting, but it's certainly helpful. I think 'most' people don't like to do this. But, I know a few people that LOVE to count their calories. I'm not one of them! I think the portion methods works great.

Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (254 posts) at 07:16 PM:
I didnt calorie count through challenge 1, I just went with portion sizes, but now for challenge 2 I am using mybodycomp.com to get my calorie needs and tracking them on software I downloaded of dietclub.com. I wouldnt worry too much about it, I am only checking it out because I was worried about the lack of fibre I was getting so now I know if I need extra veges and where I can squeeze them into the day. Also if I do alot of extra exercise (like tonight is hockey and soccer - thats 600 calories burnt off) I know roughly how much extra food I can have. Stick with the portion method. Dont make it comlicated otherwise you might think BFL isnt worth it and it definetly IS worth it! When everything becomes second nature you might want to toy around with some numbers?

Thread: Question about Max-OT (49 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (393 posts) at 02:54 PM: Question about Max-OT

I just had legs workout based on Max-OT and it seems too easy. I wonder if members who are doing it find the program useful?

Squats: 2 sets, 6 reps 45 dumbbells.

Leg extensions: 2 sets, 6 reps 170lbs

Leg curls: 2 sets, 6 reps 170 lbs

I didn’t get to the point of failure on the sets, so next time I’ll load heavier weights.

Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (604 posts) at 02:59 PM:
wow, that is a short workout. Is it more than once a week ?

Body for Life Forum Message by Savyart (38 posts) at 03:08 PM:
I'm starting in on MaxOT tonight. From my understanding though - if you didn't load up enough, you didn't really get the point of the sets. You probably won't think it's so easy then....

Body for Life Forum Message by nico (153 posts) at 03:13 PM:
Seem that you will need to raise your plate, and did you get through the warm-up and acclimation set. Seem that those one are really important and should not be neglect.

Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (452 posts) at 03:33 PM:
MAX OT should be done to complete muscle failure you need to use heavier weights if you're finding it too easy. BFL workouts have an anaerobic (spelling?) aspect to them as well as an aerobic where as MAX OT is pure anaerobic. I've done MAX OT type of workouts in the past just watch your joints and make sure you're always using proper form.

Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (452 posts) at 03:35 PM:
another thing I would suggest lose the dumbells for squats and put a barbell across your traps....much harder, make sure you have safety bars up though just incase.

Thread: Caffeine Withdrawals! (26 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by scott76 (4 posts) at 08:22 PM: Caffeine Withdrawals!
Hey everyone I just started on the body for life today. I have no problem with most of the items in the diet (I love healthy food anyways) but I can already notice the caffeine withdrawal is going to be a painful one. Maybe it's the whole daylight savings/weekend thing that made my morning incredibly bad, but I am very much NOT a morning person. I really struggle bad till about 10 or 11am at work keeping focused (I've tried getting more sleep and even going to a sleep lab but they didn't find anything wrong with me). How harmful would it be to drink tea instead of water in the morning? Any thoughts? I'm not a big coffee drinker. I usually am pepping myself up in the morning with a mountain dew. Just cutting out the dew in the morning will probably lose a lot of weight for me.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (1366 posts) at 08:39 PM:
Caffeine isn't so bad, there's no need to cut it out entirely. Just make sure that for each cup of tea or coffee you drink, you drink an extra cup of water. In EFL, Bill actually says it's beneficial to have a cup of coffee before a weight workout. You're right to cut out the Mountain Dew, though. And if you've decided you need to completely cut out caffeine (which I will stress again that you do not have to do in order to be successful) do it gradually, not all at once. You'll literally save yourself some headaches! And all of this caffeine talk reminds me, I need to get the coffee ready for the morning. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (468 posts) at 08:44 PM:
Get the idea of the caffeine out of your head. I used to drink a whole pot of coffe every morning for about 10 years I got off the caffeine because of breast lumps, the dr said it was the caffeine causing it. for 8 years, I drank decafee and never once felt any difference. Last year I started back with my caffeine coffee because it is cheaper then the decaffe, again, no difference if it makes you feel better, just drink diet dew and then drink your water You can have diet or tea or coffee, as long as you also drink your 10 cups of water or more, just be prepared to go to the bathroom alot. hehe

Body for Life Forum Message by dani_parker (116 posts) at 08:36 AM:
I called EAS this morning. So you tape in your 4 final photos on the provided pages, but you can include a favorite as well. The guy told me to paperclip it somewhere else in the packet. I put mine next to my essay, so it's on top of the picture of Kelly Adair. I couldn't find a better place to put it. He also suggested to put my name and contact info on the back of it, in case it comes out of the packet. I have the other 4 photos in the packet with double stick tape. Just FYI--I think they allow for a extra photo because they were getting so many pictures that were different poses than what they wanted. So my regular photos are in the exact same position as my starting photos-arms and legs straight. And this really shows the changes from the before photos! That's why I want to include my favorite--the 'ole one leg in front of the other trick' that makes me look more slim. hehehehehehehehehe Danielle

the broccoli I wouldn't worry about and also I wouldn't worry about the flax oil either. I know it's fat it has a high number of calories however flax oil actually helps you burn fat. I'm not saying go and have as much as you want (although it is pretty horrid so why anyone who would want more than a tbsp i don't know)but I really don't think it will add to your daily calorie intake, you really could actually add more flax and find that you burn more fat. Anyhow that's what I've read in several different places. hope it helps Jay

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (335 posts) at 06:46 AM: Carbs, fats, proteins...Oh my!
I am constantly studying good nutrition and what is right and what is wrong.  Currently I am reading a nurses guide to nutrition.  A client gave it to me and she also is giving me advice on how to eat.  I find it ironic she ways 325.... Anyways she is in the process of changing that for good at least that is my prayer.  In the book it states to only increase the protein by 14grams and to increase the carbs for the rest.  Despite my current beliefs and knowledge I was about to start doing that but than I talked with a coworker at the gym and asked her (she was a nurse for many years and she is in bodybuilding and looks great six pack and all) if upping carbs is correct.  I told her about the book and she said they just dont know.  I asked her again but these are medical people and she said she knew but it is not right.  What are your thoughts?

Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (437 posts) at 07:05 AM:
Jeremy, you know more about nutrition than I ever will. So, I can only provide you the commons sense approach to your question. And that is, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

Body for Life Forum Message by Savyart (38 posts) at 08:52 AM:
My mother was a nurse - and back then (20 yrs ago) they gave little if ANY background on nutrition. And my mother worked at children's hospital! more than that - they rarely covered it with any of the dr's either. I think you can't rely on the medical professional for sound nutritional advice unless they have gone on to get their nutritionists degree or deliberately are working in that field. It's sad but true. In addition to that, they are always discovering new things about nutrition - so those who were taught one thing 10 yrs ago are totally out of sync with what is current today. It's a big mess, if you ask me. As for the friend who is over 300 lbs - the thing is, a LOT of overweight/obese people know a LOT about nutrition. Knowledge does not always equal results and no one gets that far overwieght just because they didn't know. It's not fair to judge her knowledge because of her weight - one has nothing to do with the other. I'm not saying she is right or wrong - just that her weight shouldn't be a consideration when looking at the information.

Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (270 posts) at 10:10 AM:
Well the first thing that I noticed is that the bbok is probably a bit older than this year. That means it would be following the old food guidelines set out by the FDA. They changed those this year along with the exersise guidelines. The food guide from the last 15 years is the one that has made the country heavy by loading up on high carb low protien foods, instead of nutritional balance. Alot of people still think that is the right way to eat because thats what they were taught years ago, and they have not kept up on the science. It will take a few years for the dust to settle and text books to change.

Thread: vegetables (101 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by mj (42 posts) at 09:38 AM: vegetables
I am confused on the vegetables. I read where people are saying that you can have unlimited veggies or use those to fill up on. Don't they have a lot of carbs? This would put me way over the 40% carbs for the day. Can anyone help clear this up for me?

Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (452 posts) at 09:53 AM:
vegetables are very low in calories so they can't possibly have a lot of carbs since there's 4 carbs to every calorie. Vegetables on average have 50 cal per cup so in order to get 300 cal you'd need to eat 6 cups of veggies that's alot o veggies. This is for mixed veggies or leafy green. Potatoes are high in carbs and aren't considered a veggie (you probably already knew that one I know just figured it should be mentioned it just incase)

Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (181 posts) at 10:30 AM:

Body for Life Forum Message by fauxpasfur (95 posts) at 02:38 PM:
People get so scared of carbs in the age of Atkins, but what is really not good for you about carbs are the carbs that are refined and contain lots of sugars....you know, donuts, white bread, cookies, sugary stuff.

Veggetable sources of carbs are great for you. I wouldn't worry about it. Meg

Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (393 posts) at 02:47 PM:
By saying unlimited vegetables, the intention is for fibrous vegetables like celery, lattice, cabbage, onion, cucumber etc. Vegetables that can be turned into flower, like corn and potatoes are considered carbs and should be limited to one portion per meal.

Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (254 posts) at 08:04 PM:
Check out the bodyforlife site and it will define what veges are carbs and which arnt. Starchy veges such as potato, corn, sweet potato are considered carbs as they are quite energy dense. 100g of raw potatoes contains 70 calories and 14g carbs; 100g broccoli contains 24 calories and 0.5g carbs. Choose wisely and you can scoff yourself silly on delicious veges (I am vege mad!)

Thread: Is it normal to feel sick? (91 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by scolquhoun (3 posts) at 08:11 AM: Is it normal to feel sick?
I just started BFL and after I did my eliptical last night I felt sick to my stomach for 2 hours. It wasn't because of food, because it had been 2 hours since dinner. I think I over did it. But aren't you suppose to push yourself until you can't push anymore? This has happened once before after I went jogging. Do you think this is going to happen each time.

Body for Life Forum Message by bella2be (125 posts) at 08:23 AM:
Are you drinking enough water? Make sure you are well hydrated when doing your HIIT workouts. I have been a runner for many years and have found that the times when I have not had enough to drink before or during my workout I get that nauseous feeling. This could be a reason.

Body for Life Forum Message by Savyart (38 posts) at 08:27 AM:
I 2nd the water question - also, while you are supposed to push yourself very hard, there is such a thing as going too far. Feeling sick for a little while is normal (not all the time, of course) but for THAT long afterwards - did you eat anything after??

Body for Life Forum Message by scolquhoun (3 posts) at 09:09 AM: Re:
I think I did drink enough. I drank a glass before, one during and one after. I did not eat anything after because I felt too sick. Sue

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (911 posts) at 09:45 AM:
Sue that may not be enough water. Remember your working up a sweat and need a bit more at that time. During cardio, I drink about 40 OZ of water. I have never felt sick to my stomach before during or after cardio. But I also agree with savyart, there is such a thing as pushing TOO HARD and maybe your body is trying to tell you to calm down. Try drinking more water especially DURING cardio and don't change your intensity yet. If you continue with the nausea, even after increasing your water intake during cardio, then I would say your pushing yourself a bit too hard at this point and need to bring your intensity down a bit. Best of luck to you and I hope this helps :)

Body for Life Forum Message by busy91 (5 posts) at 12:47 PM:
It looks like the question was already answered. I know in the past I've gotten sick, dizzy...you name it b'cause I needed to drink more water. Sounds so simple, but it makes a world of difference.

Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (437 posts) at 02:15 PM:
I think that it could also be caused by food, but not what you ate but what you didn’t eat. You stated that you did your cardio later in the day and that you hadn’t eaten in two hours. If you are following the BFL program strictly, then your body was getting ready to be fed again as its reserves would have been low. So, if you really pushed your cardio, you were rapidly depleting your body’s resources. Since there was nothing in your body and you were pushing hard, your body couldn’t produce the energy needed to recover from the exertion after completing the exercise. This happens to me when I exercise later in the day and do not eat prior to working out. But, I could be wrong!

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (73 posts) at 10:57 AM:
I use to actually change my routine every week. But I have been experiencing better results this time by changing it every four weeks. this way I can monitor any strength increase better. Body for Life Forum Message by Britney's Competition (15 posts) at 12:05 PM:
I suggest change them every 4 weeks too, just do you do not get bored, but it does not hurt to keep the same routine. As for abs, I feel it is better to work on them more than recommended by the book. Cardio and intake of carbs effects your abs too. The more cardio you do (especially running) it will help you with the appearance of your abs. There's also a BFL ab bootcamp, but that is extremely hard!! It was posted on a thread before, I will try and find it. If you want abs you really have to focus on your core and get rid of that fat on top of the abs.

Body for Life Forum Message by Kat (55 posts) at 01:01 PM:
And yet another amazing tidbit from Hussman's site. ********************************** Lastly, if you've been sedentary for a long time, your fat probably hasn't seen an ounce of circulation since high school. This causes your fat to turn thick and hard, or "blubbery" (yes, Scrabble fans, that is a word). Marine animals have this sort of fat deposit, called a "blubber lay". When you start working out consistently, some of you may find that your fat or cellulite becomes more like Jell-O initially. In whales (forgive me - this is not personal), increased activity also forces a change in circulation strategy so that there is increased blood flow near the body's surface. I suspect that this occurs in humans as well, so you may be a little "pink" for even hours after a good workout. ******************************** gbfan, it sounds like you are on the right track...

Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (254 posts) at 01:05 AM:
Look at the facts: You started with a lean bodyweight of 102lb and it is now 110lb - dude - that is AMAZING!!! You have gained 8lb of lean mass! This is what BFL is all about. Your body composition is changing, thats all. You also started with 62lb of bodyfat which, buy week 4, is now 57lb - do the math, you have lost a lot of fat. Concentrate on these figures to give you the motivation - your transformation is happening and before you know it you will see it and you wont know how you missed it! Good luck, keep with it! I just got back from spring break in Boracay.  It was a dreamy beach vacation but I'm guessing it set me waaaayyy back in BFL-land. 87 mango shakes and 26 pounds of seafood tasted great but I can't bring myself to witness the actual damage on the scale (or measuring tape) just yet.  I'm a little disappointed in my lack of self restraint, but it was SO fun.....

Okay, now my butt's back on the soccer field today and I'm hittin' that gym hard tomorrow.  I've got a week left on my first challenge and plan to start my second right away.  By June, I will be fit, lean, and healthy.

Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (254 posts) at 12:55 AM:
Yay, go Ann! Think of all that seafood as being pure protein, mango shakes as your carbs and all that swimming as your cardio and you might not feel so guilty! Where is Boracay? I hope to go to overseas to a tropical island next year! I expect that to be a 'dreamy beach vacation' *sigh*

Well I made it through my third BFL challenge, limping to the finish line as I got a bit sloppy with my eating over the last couple weeks. The final stats and pictures are posted- if the numbers are right (and they have been fluctuating a lot...) then this time around I lost 3 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of muscle. So I guess that's not bad- for next time though it will have to be more intensity on the cardio and stricter dieting if I want better results. Anyhow I am taking a one week break and then I should be back on board for challenge #4 - to be continued...

Mainly though I just need to get set for starting again next week and setting goals, etc. I feel like unless I get a little more serious about it this time, I will get too lazy or even backslide, which I don't want to happen. If anyone else has gotten to this point after a few tries where they had to really 'take it up a notch' to get better results- for a cutting cycle or something similar- I would appreciate your advice. Thanks, Chris

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (359 posts) at 03:11 AM: Latest episode with my 'slimming haircut' friends...
Hi guys! Just got back from camping late this afternoon... Just now getting a chance to catch up on the latest posts... Holy Smokes!!! You guys have been busy!!! I had a great time following BFL while I was camping (Camping-For-Life?!!!) but I missed you guys! Well, the group I went with included a couple of friends that are part of my Tuesday night bible study - better known on the board as the 'slimming haircut' friends!!! I think the fact that I lost 67 lbs in 12 weeks was starting to sink in...One of them kept saying "Jim, you really lost 67 lbs in 12 weeks?! 67 lbs in 12 weeks!... 67 lbs in 12 weeks?!........ I told him about BFL in more detail and then I really threw him and the rest of the group for a loop... Saturday was my free day while camping. When I got back from my bike ride, they asked me where I went. I said "Well, I had to make a Burger King run and get a Whopper and fries." They were shocked! The guy who dropped 67 lbs is eating Burger King?! Then later I walked up carrying hot wings and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and proudly stated "Yes folks, I lost all that weight on the hot wings and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups diet!" And they took me seriously!!! I let them think about it for a while and then I explained it was my free day... However, they still looked pretty puzzled for the rest of the camping trip... The good news is the one friend who needs to lose about a 100 lbs said he was committing to lose the weight. He is going to try Weight Watchers and then maybe BFL. I told him I would do whatever I could to support him... I wouldn't be surprised if the next time I see him that he says something like "Hey, Jim! I'm really ready to lose the weight! Now, where is it that you got that slimming haircut???" Hmmmmm....Maybe he thinks BFL stands for 'Barber-For-Life'!!! Stay tuned... Jim

Thread: Oh man! I want you guys to experience this!!! (226 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (359 posts) at 04:11 AM: Oh man! I want you guys to experience this!!!
Hi gang! Just got back from camping late today and I'm just now getting a chance to catch up on the recent posts... I went camping for several days at Lake Jennings - a beautiful lake nearby, surrounded by hills and low mountains. I came in on Wednesday and my friends came in on Friday, so I had a couple of days to reflect on my just completed challenge. I guess it sunk in that THIS time was different than the numerous comeback attempts of the last several years that were shot down by illness... I rode my bike every day and about the third day it hit me...Bike riding was finally FUN again! Although I had ridden the bike off and on the last several years, it was never much fun because I wasn't well - or fit! In fact, there were many times that I had wondered if maybe bike riding just wasn't for me anymore and maybe I should just sell my bikes... Well, on Friday I decided to test myself. The road leading up to the lake is a fairly difficult climb (about an 8% grade a half-mile long) that I used to do on a regular basis about 10 years ago. It was tough then when I was in good shape and well! Well, as soon as I started the climb I asked myself "Jim, what the Hell do you think you're doing!?" The climb was already getting tough and I had just started up the hill!!! I watched my heart rate monitor with some concern as it climbed quickly...158...163...166... By now, I was breathing very hard and my legs were so tired that I thought "Well, I guess I may just have to get off the bike soon and walk the rest of the way..." Then a long-dormant little fire-breathing voice that I hadn't heard for years screamed at me "The Hell you will!!! Where's the tough bike rider who your riding buddies used to call "The Monster"!!!??? You never quit on a tough hill before Jim, and you're not going to quit on this one!!! YOU are an experienced cyclist! You know what to do on a long climb! Now, slow down your breathing...smooth out your pedal stroke...straighten your back..." Well, my heart rate continued to rise...169...172...174!!! I thought "Whoah Jim! Your calculated MAX heart rate is 170! Guess that's wrong! But like the old days, I simply wasn't going to give up! I finally reached the summit and took a much deserved breather! Looking out at the beautiful lake I thought "Wow! That was a tough hill! Yes it was...BUT you made it Jim! Way to go buddy!!!" At that moment, I just felt more alive than I have in years...It was such an awesome feeling that I just wished you all were there...I wanted to tell you in person that THIS feeling of being alive is what you LIVE for! And BFL is such a great tool to get you there! Well, after I got home today and put my camping stuff away I stopped and looked at my bike... "Wow, what a cool bike!" I'm telling you, I felt like a 6 year old! At first, I thought how silly for a 50 year old man to be so excited about a bicycle! - and then the adult in me responded "Hey Jim, whatever works!" So I guess I learned this weekend that I AM still a serious bicycle rider...soon to be "The Monster" once again...And also, that it means the world to me to do whatever I can so that others (i.e you guys!) can feel as alive as I did at the top of that hill... Take care and PLEASE keep on truckin'!!! Jim

OK I just wanted to share some good news. Yesterday I was cleaning out my closet and throwing away alot of clothes. I came across a pair of capri pants that by the end of summer were so tight, they gave me the dreaded "camel toe" LOL so I avoided wearing them. So I said to hubby "I wonder how these are gonna look". So I tried them on. Not only were they NOT TIGHT but yes in the crotch they were baggy and loose. I asked hubby "how do they look"? He said baggy and comfortable. I didn't throw them out. LOL Even though I know by the time the weather is warm enough to wear them they are probably gonna be falling off of me. This was a total wooooooty woooooooo moment!!!!!! :)

Thread: Muscle & Fat (106 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Gymbunny (119 posts) at 07:49 AM: Muscle & Fat
I remember seeing a thread where someone gave the math to work out how much fat was lost and how much muscle was gained. Can someone either direct me to it or does anyone know the sums?? Thank you. :P

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (911 posts) at 09:36 AM:
If you enter your bodt fat % on your tracker profile every week, it is calculated for you. I don't know how to do the math for it though. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (335 posts) at 11:08 AM:
Well...if you know your body fat % at your starting point and then now, it is pretty easy to do. Just take the beginning wt X bf %. For you, Gymbunny, 133 x .223 = 29.66 lbs fat weight. 133-29.66= 103.34 lbs lean mass (muscle, blood, bones, etc.) Current 132 x .203= 26.80 lbs fat. 132-26.80 = 105.2 lbs lean mass. Overall, looks like you lost 2.86 lbs fat and gained 1.86 lbs muscle. Good job!!! Nancy

Body for Life Forum Message by Gymbunny (119 posts) at 11:17 AM:
Nancy, thank you so much for doing that for me! The amounts lost and gained don't sound like a whole lot but I feel so different having done the challenge...and I'm not that easily beaten. Challenge 2 - 11th April! ;P

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (335 posts) at 11:33 AM:
bunny...losing fat without losing muscle is what you want..and you gained almost 2 lbs of muscle, to boot. This is something to be very proud of!! You really did a great job! Keep up the good work! Nancy

I might also not been able to give all my points in regard with cardio because my thinking are little different from BFL Plan, so stick to what you think is working the best for YOU. You know more your body than anyone else. And if you think that this will be overtraining and hinder some of your progress, listen to YOUR SELF.

I hear you Coco, my Golden Retriever past away a last year and he was having and eye's tumor. So sorry for you, I know how hard it is. Gosh, maybe I shouldn't told you that, sorry, but I know and know how hard it is. My golden was 11 year's old, have gone under treatment but I think that he was getting too old and the treatment were probably tough for him. Hope your's will be okay, maybe it is not a big thing and some pills will be able to shrink the tumor's and make it disappear. The tumor's of my dog has shrink, but he was getting probably to old to fight against those treatments pills. But the Veterinary told us that there where chance that the pills will save our dog, but unfortunatly he was too old to support everything.

With all of the excellent progress and pics being posted, along with the start of our Team Challenge, thought this would be a good way to kick the week off ... So, somebody, anybody .. kick it off with two questions ..

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (210 posts) at 11:25 AM:
To Team B, C & D - pick any 2 questions. Whats your favourite meal at McDonalds's? Whats your favourite meal at Burger King? Whats your favourite pizza at Pizza Hut? Whats your favourite Sundae at DQ? Whats your favourite donut? Hows that for a little fun???????

Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (227 posts) at 11:27 AM:
McDonald's AND Burger King: like the cheeseburger kid's meal. Pizza Hut: deep dish cheese pizza DQ: loooove Snicker's blizzards Donut: plain Krispy Kreme.... Yummy thread, Flower! hehe.

Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (222 posts) at 11:29 AM:
1) Big and Tasty from McDonalds w/fries 2)Nothing at Burger King 3) I go with Cheese Pizza from Pizza Hut Don't eat at DQ. 4) I don't eat donuts a lot but when I do, Krispy Kreme all the way.

Oh Flower .... hmmmm , you must be on Team A ? LOL Ok, I'll bite, but your ploy to get us to cheat will fail .. :) lol. Burger King - double whopper with cheese. Donut - krispy kremes, of course . choc. cake with choc icing. :)

It's been over three years since I've eaten at any of those establishments (I refuse to call them restaurants anymore) or had a donut. But, back in the day...... McDonalds: The classic Big Mac(sometimes 2) and fries. Donut: Long John. Chocolate coated, Bavarian creme filling.

Body for Life Forum Message by llangkamp (80 posts) at 12:46 PM:
Pizza Hut: Thin crust Meatlovers Doughnut: Elephant Ears -- Extra Large That said, I went on Calorie King and will never go back to Pizza Hut. Meatlovers: One slice = 245 cal, 13g fat and I used to have at least 4 Elephant Ears: Can't find the nutrition info -- must be no cal? GO TEAM C! Lisa

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (66 posts) at 01:55 PM:
Whats your favourite pizza at Pizza Hut? Meat lovers on a pan crust - with no sause. Whats your favourite donut? The plain glazed donuts at Krispy Kream - or as we like to call them here Krispy Krack. And as far as baked pastries go - close behind the KKD is the cinnabone roll. Do you know these things are so BAD that they don't even list the nutritional info ANYWHERE. If you email them they tell you they can't tell you bacause 'every store make them differently' Yeah - right! One site says they are over 700 calores each. (without the glaze)

Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (877 posts) at 02:06 PM:
McDonald's -- hot fudge sundae with nuts BK -- chicken whopper Pizza Hut -- ick. I like Domino's. Donuts -- long johns, creme-filled but NOT krispy kreme. Dairy Queen -- I like the Peanut Buster Parfait. And nice try, Flower, but I'm SO eating clean today. Yummy baked chicken with black beans and lettuce and water to drink. :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (437 posts) at 02:07 PM:
No subliminal messages (McDonald’s drive-thru) because Team A wants to win this (Pizza Hut rocks) competition fair and square (Krispy Kremes… the HOT light is on!). We should never wish bad luck (do you want the large fries with that) to the other teams as we (German chocolate cake) want every team to do their best (peanut butter and jelly) in their transformation efforts (Snickers Bar). So, please, (Chinese buffet… all YOU can eat) don’t send any subliminal messages to the other (ice cream sundaes) teams in an effort to subvert their successes (ice cold beer… margaritas… nachos). Good luck (Kentucky FRIED Chicken) to all teams!

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (542 posts) at 03:28 PM:
Can't stand McDonalds. At Burger King it used to be Whopper, fries and a chocolate shake, but that really doesn't do anything for me any more. Pizza hut?? Why have Pizza Hut when you can get GOOD pizza? Donuts: Bavarian Cream. Dairy Queen: again, if I'm going to have ice cream it's going to be GOOD ice cream.

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (468 posts) at 03:49 PM:
ok, I win on this one cause I don't eat most of that stuff so it won't get to me. I don't like anything at McD's or BK I don't like Pizza hut, to me a frozen pizza is better then Pizza Hut! But my husband makes pizza from stratch and wow, now that's a Pizza!! We don't have a DQ near us But now Donuts, Well there you got me, I LOVE any kind of donut, in fact, I haven't met a donut or a cookie that I haven't liked

Body for Life Forum Message by lark (86 posts) at 04:35 PM:
Ok, I'll play...

McD's .... #2 with a coke (the 2 cheeseburger meal, although I usually share with someone)

BurgerKing... junior whopper with cheese and a coke

Pizza Hut... a hand tossed pepperoni pizza

DQ... my worst drive thru enemy... an oreo blizzard with chocolate ice cream YUM!

Donuts... chocolate whatever

But I am beyond that all now, well except maybe an occassional free day =)

Do you mean to tell me that there are actually people who exist that DON'T LIKE PIZZA HUT?! WHAT?!!!!!! O.K., now I've heard everything. I love Pizza Hut!!! I want to marry Pizza Hut. My favorite from there is pepperoni and black olives on a pan crust.........ohhhhhhh bliss. Haven't eaten at McDonald's or Burger King in a loooong time, but I used to love the Quarter Pounder w/Cheese combo from McDonald's-super sized of course. Favorite donut......so easy-powdered with red jelly. Mmmmmm, I had 2 of them yesterday.

OK, Nice try Flower, but after watching Super Size Me, I haven't eaten at any fast food restaurants with the exception of a three small pieces of pizza from Pizza Hut. I had the worst indegestion from eating the three pieces of pizza. I'm done with them. Best part is, short of Pizza, our kids refuse to eat at any fast food restaurant after seeing the movie. Team B Rocks!!! David

Whats your favourite meal at McDonalds's? Hmmm...a tie between the double cheeseburger (ketchup only) or the Cheeseburger Happy Meal (it's one of my "cheat meals" on free day...not horrible, but not great). ************************************** Whats your favourite meal at Burger King? I do not eat at Burger King (I used to LOVE the Croissan'wich though...but oh, so horrible for you...22 or so grams of fat compared to the 11g of fat in a EggMcMuffin). ********************************** Whats your favourite pizza at Pizza Hut? I don't like Pizza Hut (I think it has to do with my working there as a teenager delivering pies). But I LOOOOOOOOOVE Costco pizza.....oh man....I have SUCH a hard time avoiding their pizza. So I now make my trips to Costco ONLY on free day. ************************************ Whats your favourite Sundae at DQ? This one is EASY....the Brownie Earthquake Thunder...or something like that. It's a brownie loaded with ice cream, crushed Oreo cookies, marshamallow cream, hot fudge...it's heaven in a friggin' plastic dish!!!! ************************************* Whats your favourite donut? Another easy....Krispy Kreme's Chocolate Iced Kreme filled. NOT the custard, but the really cavity-causing, sickly sweet icing!!!! Melanie (who is not thinking of all the food mentioned above!!!)

I wanted to be a cheerleader! I tried out and the coach said You have the big mouth, haha! I talk Loud! ha and I knew all theers but I couldn't do a split to save my life. Back in the olden days thats all you had to do was a split! So I got on the pep squad and realized I hated football so I quit Now 100 years later, My daughter is a cheerleader. Times are very different, its very very competitive. they dance and twist in the air, scary but she is really awesome! She won ALL STAR last summer. She has been a cheerleader since kindergarden, on the pee wee team, In two weeks is the big try out for 11th graders for next year. The competition is very hard ths year, she has to make the Varsity or else she is out because 11th graders can't be on Jr Varsity. I am praying she makes it, b/c cheerleading is her life! She's good, really good, but she gets nervous at the try outs. So be thinking about Sarah ok? GO SARAH! GO SARAH!!!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (335 posts) at 10:45 AM:
I remember tryouts...smiling so hard your mouth aches the rest of the day...we used to put vaseline on our teeth so our lips wouldn't stick to our teeth from lack of saliva (all the smiling!).. I was just telling my daughters the other day that I was a flyer and I still can't believe the stuff I did. Toe flips, being the most outrages. This is when you stand in 2 peoples cupped hands and then throw you up and backwards and you do a huge backflip in the air! They used to scare me but felt great once you were back on the ground. Now I see what they do today...simultaneous back tucks - they are just so awesome today. And truly ATHELETES. Go Sarah!!

Yes, I am sick AGAIN! I am tired of this crap! I eat right, drink more water than a friggin camel, take  my vitamins and I am sick again and what is worse, is my son is sick as well... Give it to me, but leave him alone, poor baby woke up this morning at 0130 with a fever of 102, had to give him suppositories asap, to bring the fever down and what makes this situation worse, is he vomited all over my mom and her bed, poor baby had it all down his shirt and was crying because he didn't know what was going on, talking about pulling your heart out! So the whole house was up very early this morning and I can't get him an appointment until later.  People say not to ask why, but the heck if I am not going too? What did I do to deserve this and most of all my baby?  Off and on for a Month, between the both of us, have been sick three times and of course it is harder on him than me....
To top it off, I haven't heard from my BF in over a week, I can't get in touch with anyone, don't exactly know where he is at, his condition, nothing.... Kind of feel like I am losing control here.... Got to take care of my baby first!

The doc gave us suppositories to help things a bit and do you know that she REFUSED to let her dad change her diapers after that??!! Poor thing. Lucky for us she decided it was time for potty training just before she turned 2...because I was getting tired of doing all the changes....LOL!!!! Good luck with your baby....it's so hard to see them sick! Melanie = )

Thread: Back Problems (78 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by GeoCacher (6 posts) at 12:04 PM: Back Problems
Hello Everybody, I was just wondering if there was anyone out there with serious back problems. About three years ago I had to have a Posterior Spinal Fusion done and it never really totally fused. So I have back pain alot. Most every day. I'm not going to let it stop me or anything but since I am really fat and have a weak back, I probably won't be bench-pressing tons of weight right out of the chute. If anyone has a similar problem I would sure like to hear your story.

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (468 posts) at 12:48 PM:
I have 2 herniated disks in my back and 3 torn ligaments, arthritts build up and they say I have fibermaalgia Not much you can do except get operated to I guess do what you have , fused them back, I don't want to do that so I just put up with the pain, I realized a long time ago that when I was teaching aerobics I didn't hurt, it's like I forgot about the pain and just jumped away at high impact. but if I stop for a few days I really hurt, It gets to where I can't stand up for over 5 minutes. Some say I may be hurting myself more in the long run, but I feel that as long as I can do it, I will. alot of the time I can work thru the pain or discomfot and once I get started I'm good for the rest of the day. I don't do heavy wts. I am only benching like 20 to 30, I just do what I can and take each day separtley I try to work alot on my abs because a stron core helps with building a stronger back. crunches really hurt my back so I do a little at a time, like 15 and then alternate I also notice that the more wt I lose the better my back feels . Good luck and just don't over do anything, pace yourself and just go from day to day.

Body for Life Forum Message by GeoCacher (6 posts) at 12:56 PM:
Thanks fostermamasmith, I think you made a good decision not having a fusion done. Mine was three years ago and except for correcting my posture, It did nothing for me. Back pain can be a real hard thing to work with but it looks like you have done a great job working through yours. Thanks again for the support.

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (66 posts) at 12:59 PM:
I don't have much to add to the 'bad back' discussion, but I had to make a comment on your name GeoCacher. May family and I are avid geocachers! we absolutly love the sport! ;)

Body for Life Forum Message by llangkamp (80 posts) at 01:03 PM:
I had three discs removed and a spinal fusion done about 10 years ago (L34, L4-5, L5-S1). I have never had a really strong stomach and obviously my back is weak too.

I know that one thing that is going to help with your pain is losing weight -- there is nothing worse for a bad back, so you have that going for you!

Make sure that you are very conscious of your posture as you do your exercises, the last thing you need to do is hurt your back even more. When you are starting out, even if you think you can lift more, take it down a couple of notches.

Personally, I started out with little or no weight. I have a stability ball, and have been doing a lot of my exercises with it. I have to be very careful when I do abdominals, because it is easy for me to irritate my sciatica, and I have found that the ball helps with that a lot. If something hurts, I stop doing it. If I find that I am really sore or limping by the end of the day or the next day, I delete that exercise for this challenge (perhaps try again when I'm stronger).

I haven't really hit on anything that feels ultra good for abs yet, but I try new things all the time. I just got a ball/ab DVD from the library and am eager to do it (hard with the kids).

One suggestion is to start your ab/back portions with the PT exercises you got right after your surgery. It is hard for me to make suggestions about particular exercises, because I don't know where your exact injury is located.

On the days that I do lower back work in particular, I find that two ibuprophin help with the pain/muscle tighness.

Good Luck! Keep strong! I really believe that if you are careful, BFL will help your situation.

Lisa

Also doing well here. I'm over my TOM freak-out that happened this weekend. I still managed to eat fairly clean, but I was mad at myself for not working out. It's all good now though, had a great workout this morning and I'm upping my calories a little (I was only averaging 1100 a day, which I think contributed to my extreme tiredness by the end of the week). I don't want to disappoint my team (or myself -- only 4 weeks left of C1!)

I'm new, 1st challenge, and don't know if anyone else has this problem... But I seem to LOVE to beat myself up. I failed to awake on time to go to the gym this morning (and failed to have a quality breakfast) so am tempted to beat myself up over it. But part of my decision to do Body for Life is to improve my MENTAL health also. I refuse to continue to look in the mirror and cry, or look in the mirror and hate what I see and pick it apart (like...God look at the cellulite on your thighs, you're disgusting, etc.). It's a work in progress. I will improve, little by little. And I will not give up. And I wont hate myself for having coffee and graham crackers for breakfast. I will have good nutrition for the rest of the day and I will NOT give up!!!

Exactly. I just started my 9th week and last week was really bad for me. It started out great, but ended with an extra free day and three missed workouts. I could've beat myself up about it and let that feeling take over, but I got up and worked out this morning and I feel great! I'm focused and committed to finishing these last four weeks the best I can and moving right into Challenge 2. Definitley, do not hate yourself, don't beat yourself up if you mess up, just keep going.

I think loving yourself takes practice just like everything else. One of the things I try to do is a little excercise I learned in marriage class. First I list the things I feel I did 'wrong'. Get it all out because this is the last time you're going to get to think about them ;) Now list 'stratagies' on how to improve on these 'mistakes'. After all insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. For example. Your 'mistake' might be "I ate a bad breakfast" your stratagy could be "I'll set out the food for my planned breakfast the night before so that it's the firs thing I see and it's convienant. That way I'm not tempted to grab something I don't want to be eating right now" Lastly list at least three things you did right. More if you can, but there has to be at least three. There are days when my 'three things' are pretty lame. Like, "I threw away the last M&M in the bag instead of eating it". The important thing is that they statements are 100% postive. good luck to you! and keep on moving toward your goals!

Don't beat yourself up, it happens to us all if we don't prepare in advance. I still screw up now and then, we all do but I have found that it only happens when I have not planned and prepared for the day. If you take a bit of time before you go to bed and plan out your days meals and set them up then you have half the battle won. Planning is the key to your success, along with goals and dreams. Ask anyone who has good results here and they will tell you that planning is key.

I screw up even when I plan and am totally prepared! I'm learning to not beat myself up over it. Life's too short to be mad at ourselves. I'm learning that this program is very forvgiving (or at least our bodies are)it's our minds that mess with us. A couple of bad days, or weeks, aren't terrible as long as we get back on it.

okay so I mentioned in my profile that I was going to increase my glutamine intake. I was taking the recommended 5-10 gms a day and after doing a bunch of research I decided to increase my uptake dramatically, so both Saturday and Sunday I added 10 gms to a litre of my water and sipped it all day long basically taking in a minumum of 30 gms per day. Today I went and did my UBWO HOLY SH!!!!!T the pump I got was freakin amazing so much so that when I went to wash my face after my workout it took 3 tries to get the water from my hands to my face. This was just totally unbelievable. I know this is going to an expensive experiment but I'm going to try it out for 2 more weeks and see what happens. Next subject I put up a new flexed pic, somehow my old one disappeared though so you really have nothing to compare it with :( On a final note LOOK OUT TEAMS B,C, AND NOW I UNDERSTAND THERE'S A D....CAUSE TEAM A IS COMMING FOR YOU STRONG!!!! hee hee :)~

This is took from one of my many e-books bodybuilder's recommendattion. Hope it will help: GLUTAMINE During training, glutamine is depleted from muscles (where glutamine is synthesized and stored) decreasing stamina, strength, and recovery. Normally it can take up to almost a week for the glutamine levels to return to normal. By supplementing your body’s glutamine, your cells get rehydrated faster. This initiates greater protein synthesis, bringing about greater muscle retention and growth. Another little plus is that glutamine enables you to train harder by improving recovery, and by reducing fatigue inducingacids inside the muscles. Glutamine can increase growth hormone secretion, which then aids in shedding fat while maintaining muscle. Growth hormone is secreted at night within the first sixty minutes of deep s leep and even more growth hormone is secreted if starchy-complex carbohydrates are curtailed prior to sleep. To offset a catabolic state, supplement with 10 to 20 grams of Glutamine a day, divided into 5-gram servings, on an empty stomach within 20 minutes following training, to aid in muscle recovery and muscle growth. Other dosages should be before cardio, between meals and prior to sleep.

for anything over the head until the shoulder is better. That's what my doc said when I saw her today. At least she didn't put the kabosh on lifting all together. I just have to restrict it to high reps at low weights. She pointed out something I hadn't noticed before, that the muscles on the left side are significantly bigger than my right side. I went back and looked at my pictures, and by jimminy, she's right. It's especially visible from the back. Kinda funny, considering I'm right handed. I really should have noticed, because now that I think of it, it's the right side that I have the most trouble getting up when doing my shoulders. Anyway, I guess I'll make sure to work them separately from now on so the left doesn't overcompensate for the right, and have the right shoulder be my guide on how heavy to go.

Usually imballance like that is caused by those little things we don't think about - like you said, carrying our purse (or a 50lb bag of books when we were kids) on one side. Just another reason why every now and then we should jump off the machines, drop the barbell and use dumbbells ;)

Just the other day i was bragging about how I haven't been sick all year and i forgot to knock on wood, because the very next day I was on my a$$ with a upper respiratory bug.
Do you push through it? I'm trying to listen to my body, and today it is saying, maybe you shouldn't do your UBW. I'm sort of eating clean, I'm really drinking a ton of fluids, knudsen's juices included, along with herbal teas. I just finished week 4 and I was so excited to take my pics but they might have to wait until I feel better.
I'm even debating right now if I should go do cardio tomorrow?? Went for a hike with my dogs today and it kicked my ass. I kept breathing hard and having to stop and blow my nose. Yechh...
So I'm looking for the general consensus here- take a few days off or work out light? Thanks- Meg

Thread: Cycling and the program (73 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ChrisA (34 posts) at 05:43 PM: Cycling and the program
I just bought a new bicycle, first time I have had one since I was a kid- it's a hybrid and pretty sturdy (needs to be to support my large frame...) I went riding around yesterday and realized how much I love getting out on the trails. My question is: does anyone use cycling as part of their regular workout/aerobics plan? I'm not really into racing and need to ride for an extended time (like an hour or more) to break a sweat- and I think I will need to increase cardio for my next 12 weeks, so wondered if riding would help with that. Also, I was wondering- does riding a lot kill your knees? I think I put an awful lot of pressure on them when I am climbing, and am a little concerned about long-term effects. Thanks for your input, Chris

Body for Life Forum Message by MikeN (53 posts) at 06:26 PM:
I started riding again myself... I got a road bike and am really liking it. I am using it for EXTRA cardio/workouts, and no replacing any of my normal BFL workouts with it. I've had surgery on both knees, and haven't had any problems biking. Obviouslly, heavy climbing or sprinting will aggrevate them a bit, but it never bothers me until later that day or the next day. Even then, it doesn't "hurt" per say... I can just feel it. Read about my biking at http://mike.napurano.com/cycling/ Mike N

Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (254 posts) at 07:48 PM:
Hey Chris, I love cycling, but I do a 30km ride on my day off. To incorporate it into your BFL I would recomend something like fartlet training. Use the powerpoles as guides, so start of easy and then on the next one increase the intensity until you get up to a 9, use a 10 as a sprint. To increase the intensity you could either increase the speed, or you could increase the gear while keeping the same speed. A great investment is a spedometer - you can get them for $10 from Kmart and other dept stores. Cycling is great - good luck with it!

Body for Life Forum Message by BackFat (27 posts) at 08:42 PM:
Hi Chris I love bike riding but my work hours don't let me ride as much as i used to so i've invested in a wind trainer (that's what they call them in Oz) - it props up the back of your bike and you can ride at home (kinda like spinning) - i use this as either extra cardio or if i cant get my run in i'll do an HIIT session in the lounge room.....

Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (374 posts) at 08:49 PM:
Riding is quite easy on the knees even when climbing, if you remember one thing: DON'T PUSH TOO TALL OF A GEAR!!!!!!!!!! (Get the emphasis? lol) To elaborate, use all your gears. You paid for them! Arguably, the ideal cadence (RPM of the crankarms; ie, how fast your feet are moving) is between 75 and 110 RPM, depending on leg strength and cardio capacity. You see, the higher the cadence the more of the work is transferred from your leg muscles to your cardiovascular system. How does this translate into 'not pushing too tall of a gear?" Well, first of all, that's a little cyclist slang. The tall gears are the big ones on the crank (chainrings) and the little ones on the cassette (cogs). To wit, the hardest gearing combo to push will be the big chainring and the little cog. In terms of cadence, if you're pushing too tall a gear for the terrain or for your fatigue level, your cadence will drop significantly. That will tip you off that it is time to switch to an easier gear. You're in the right gear if your cadence is in your preferred range (for me, 85-105). Too big a gear will kill your knees. I rode a fixed-gear bike (no shifting, and no coasting) thirty miles over some pretty rough climbs last August, and my knees ached for a month. Not too bright. Sometimes, I think my sole purpose in life is to provide cautionary tales.... A stronger rider, such as you will be when you get some training under your belt, will often like a cadence on the lower end of that scale, and a bigger gear. I'm kind of an exception. I'm a big guy with decent leg strength, but I'm a spinner (high RPM) rather than a pusher (big gears, fairly low cadence). If you can classify the cycling gods, Lance Armstrong is a spinner; Jan Ullrich is a pusher. You can be a great cyclist either way. Ullrich is just so inhumanly strong that he can big-ring darn near any climb. Bear in mind that it's a learning process to get used to a high cadence. You won't start consistently spinning 90 when you first jump on the bike. I agree with Shelli, get a cyclocomputer ASAP. But I would also advise that you get one with cadence, if you're concerned with performance. Always willing to talk cycling, so if you have more questions, fire away! Dan

Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (374 posts) at 08:57 PM:
I should clarify that most of the cadence info I provided is specific to road cycling. I would imagine it would translate to mountain biking as well, but I can't say for certain.

Body for Life Forum Message by ChrisA (34 posts) at 09:06 PM:
Thanks for the detailed info Dan and everyone else- I am definitely more of a 'pusher' than a 'spinner', my legs are fairly strong and I can take moderate climbs in somewhat higher gears (like the feeling of a good leg workout, but will try not to overdo it if it kills my knees). I am more likely to do easy trails and short-distance city biking than serious road racing, time trials, or mountain biking. But this is all good to know- a speedometer is next on my list (figured a helmet and u-lock were more immediate priorities...)

Body for Life Forum Message by Emos (50 posts) at 06:46 PM:
Ughh...I hate that too. I think it is just a womanly curse. We tend to carry a lot of fat in our hips and thighs (your legs don't look huge, by the way). Too bad spot reduction isn't possible...this is one area I would definitely try it! Be patient, it will happen! You're building muscle on your legs. They may look just as bulky to you while you're building muscle, because you have both the muscle and fat. The great thing about muscle is that it burns fat even when you're resting, so the more you build, the more of a snowball effect you get...once your legs start slimming down, it should happen fast.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tarma (111 posts) at 07:03 PM:
I think for those of us that are bottom heavy that it just takes time, dedication & continuing to reduce body fat. And yes, the thighs will be the very last to go as chances are that is where the highest percentage of fat is. I had a DEXA scan done a few years ago as part of a research study and there actually was 10% more fat on my thighs than on my arms. This is still pretty much true, I just have less fat all around. Hang in there, all the fat will go with time.

I have the same problem. Even though I had good results in challenge one, my legs never really lost a LOT of fat like the rest of my body. I know I still have a good 5-8 pounds of flab just in my thigh/butt area to lose. I have read it's the last to go and it's usually a problem area for most women. We just have to be patient! Im reading BFL right now pm adversity and motivation, I wrote in my journal that the one thing Ill do to make tomorrow better is to ask for help. So this is it. I really need help.

Linne You did so awesome your first challenge! First of all, you need to be so proud of yourself. It's ok to have ups and downs, we all do. Remember why you are doing this; for yourself, your husband, your kids. You want to be the best person you can be to you and your family and friends. Being healthy is the best way to do this. I know this sounds corny, but we are only given one chance at life and we are only given one body to do it all in. Isn't that worth it ? I know it is :) No, when you wake up go throw on those gym shoes and think about how good you will feel when you're back on the right track Good luck Susan

Hmmm, I understand what you mean. I am actually one day behind you as I am on C2 W2 D1. I don't really have the "fire" anymore either. Ya know what it is? Complacency. We've grown "satisfied" with our results from challenge 1 and feel content to ride the wave of that success. But, we have to understand that if we stop-we don't just stand still, we go backwards. I for one am soooo not going back to the old me-and I know you don't want to do that either. So, we have to just grab ourselves by the scruff of our own necks, shake ourselves, and get back in gear. Let's do it Linne!

Geez, this is sounding so familiar to me. I went through this same thing...my suggestion? Take a week off. Don't go hog wild by any means, even keep up with eating 6 meals per day and trying to eat clean, but don't plan your meals, don't plan your workouts...either take the whole week off of workouts or just do what sounds FUN and be moderate with it. It took me 2 months and a lot of backsliding to finally get back that fire - don't let that happen to you. I think the end of the challenge is almost a let down of sorts...you are working so hard towards that day 84 and it gets here - you have accomplished a lot and are very proud. Then it sinks in that you are going to keep this up and it is even more of a challenge to keep up the same intensity you had during C1. Give your BRAIN a break. It will work wonders!! Good luck with it! Nancy

Sometimes when I'm waiting for inspiration...or the fire of motivation to kick in...I realize that I may have to get my booty movin without it. Don't focus on the fact that you can't find the drive that you once had; just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Place your focus on making it to the gym today and the next day will follow. It is like any big obstacle in life...if we take it step by step instead of trying to swallow everything we can look back and say jeesh that wasn’t sooooo bad OR upon reflection an overwhelming sense of pride is discovered by foraging through the rough times. Read Froglette's thread about, "There is no such thing as trying". I found it very motivational. You can keep going...I have faith in you! Kat

While most of my fluid intake is water (5-6 liters a day), I have begun to like the taste of Diet Pepsi (never personally cared for any diet sodas as they would generally give me a headache). I have always been able to drink a lot of fluids during the day, so even with the 5-6 liters of water, I can easily drink 2+ 24oz diet pepsi's. Are there any problems with this. I do remember that when I was doing Atkins several years ago, if I drank the flavored no calorie waters, it would stall in my weight loss. Thanks for your help, David

Personally, I will have a diet soda maybe once a day or every other day. I try to stay away from it and stick to water. I know what you mean though, I like some flavor everyonce in a while too! As I've heard others say, If you drink caffeine, make sure you drink the same amount in water also (equal to the soda or coffee). I'd try to stay away from it as much as you can, however, a little won't hurt. Hope that helps!

I have that hereditary High Cholesterol. The first time I did BFL (2001) it went down consideably, I don't recall the exact numbers, but it went down 30 points and my HDL finally was under 40, I think it got to 36. How can it not help.

Body for Life Forum Message by bella2be (125 posts) at 02:38 PM:
This is another goal that I have set formysel fin this challenge-- cholestrol under 200. Heredity does play a part for me, but it is certainly not thebulk of it. It was years of eating on the go and making bad choices. I have always been a runner, but the food counteracted any "good" that I thought I was doing. I am almost excited to make a doctors appointment for this summer to see my progress!

Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (254 posts) at 08:24 PM:
Hi Jamie, I'm 23 as well and I look after myself but I have a genetic condition where my liver will produce cholesterol until I keel over. I was taken to specialists as a kid, so it has always been known about. It doesnt matter how healthy I am, it will always be high. My mum was an aerobics instructor and was getting cholesterol deposits under her skin because her body couldnt cope with it. In normal people you liver knows when to stop synthesising it (it is important for hormone production, so the liver regulates it), and high cholesterol comes from eating too many saturated fats. Because of this I am highly aware of how important it is eat well and keep my cholesterol as low as possible (I take medication every 4 hours). My total cholesterol for challenge 1 stayed the same, which is in the high-risk zone (which there isnt a lot I can do about that), but the good news is that my HDL (high-density lipoproteins, the good cholesterol) went up! It was above the recomended level, but it carries more cholesterol around the body and also removes cholesterol from the arteries. My LDLs where in the lower range, they went down. LDLs are low-density lipoproteins and transport only a small amount of cholesterol and tend to deposit it in arteries. A high LDL is contributed by high processed foods and animal fats. Always read the labels of food products and make sure there is no or very little saturated fat in the product and cut ALL fat off meats. Tryglicerides where down, and it is kind of proportional to LDLs, as it is generally linked to diet. So to cut my novel short - yes, BFL does lessen it. I have never been overweight, but my cholesterol levels will always act like I am! Schelli (Australia)

Hi folks! Well, here it is April 5th, the day I set for Day One. Actually, I've set my "day one" for several years now!! I've finally kicked myself in the #ss to GET MOVING!!My biggest obstacle is hitting the snooze button. I really like to hit that button and lie in bed for another couple of minutes. I've been reading threads here about not neccessarily working out first thing in the morning and being sure to fit it in when it works best to do it...just so you DO IT. But I also know myself well enough that if I wait too long to do something I won't do it at all...lol. Hence the years that have gone by since my first day one. What do you guys do to keep yourself motivated? I know scheduling time is a great way to make sure you get the time in, but do I have to get out of bed at the crack of dawn to make this work? I get my kids off to school at 8:15 and I own my own business, so I have more flexible hours...what's my problem!! Well, today is the day anyway. Here I go!! Wish me luck. I'm posting pics later tody.

I do workout first thing in the morning, but for several reasons. One, it's the only time I knew I was available. Two, I get it done with and can focus on the rest of my day. Three, it's what the book suggested. If you do plan to workout in the morning, I would suggest reviewing your bedtime. I had to start going to be a LOT earlier in order to wake up at 5:00am.

I find that the mornings are best for me also, it sets me up for a productive day. The snooze and I have had to part company and you will get used to it soon, just put the clock someplace that you are forced to get out of bed to shut it off and don't lay back down after you do. You will find that you'll have a high energy level all day if you do your program first thing. Best wishes for your success.

silvertalons...LOL. I had to look at the name again when I saw your post...hehe. Welcome to the gutter! ha! I also started today with my UBWO. Whew! My water bottle got pretty darn heavy during that one! Probably won't be typing much the next couple of days since my arms will be pretty much useless :) It felt great though. I agree that first thing might be the most ideal time physically, but hey, if you want it to be a lifetime thing, you have to get it in when you can. If you think you will get so sick of getting up at the crack of dawn that you might throw in the towel, just adjust. I am sure the most important thing is to just do it. Good luck!

Pine, I believe that is Albert Einstein that said something along the line of ‘we cannot solve the problems in our lives using the same mindset we used when we created them’. Or some such phase. But what he was saying is that we have to change our way of thinking and acting in order to change our lives. Hence, although it is not mandatory to do your workout first thing in the morning, I would highly recommend doing so in order to tell your body that it better be prepared to compensate for the changes you are forcing upon it. Also, it takes us 30 days to create new habits so by next month, getting up and doing your workout first thing will be a new habit. Also, when your free day rolls around, you’ll be able to SAVOR resetting that alarm clock and rolling over with a poop eating grin on your face! As for motivation, at first it was my ‘before’ picture. If you haven’t seen it, check it out BUT do so on an empty stomach. You have been WARNED! Today, my motivation – as corny as it seems - is to set an example by my action and thought that proves to others that they can be successful in their BFL efforts. Good luck! And stay plugged into the team here. TJ

Thread: My intro - 2005 Challenge #1 (65 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Tamaera (2 posts) at 10:01 AM: My intro - 2005 Challenge #1
Hi all - It's been quite awhile since I"ve been to BFL tracker so it was great to see all these forums. I hope you all can help keep me motivated :) I had done 2 challenges in 2003 with awesome results. I lost 27lbs my first challenge alone. I walked & talked BFL to everyone I ran across. Then - I lost my job. It's a long, boring story but suffice it to say that my boss wanted my job (he took a demotion) and I wouldn't voluntarily give up my store so he took it. This was someone that was a good friend also for 7 yrs so this really hurt me and I felt like I had been stabbed in the back. Needless to say I went into a depression and really didn't care about my weight loss journey any longer. I had so much anger built up inside of me that I had no room for workouts, good eating etc.. My days consisted of eating Ritz sour cream & onion crackers for breakfast, toaster strudels for lunch and then I would convince myself I was still eating half way decent by eating grilled chicken, baked potato & veggies for dinner. I woke up the other day and realized that in the last year and half since I lost my job - I've gained not only all my weight back that I had lost during my challenges but also extra weight too for a total of 55 lbs gained. This is ridiculous and I'm mad at myself now for letting this happen. I cried this morning when I saw my pictures, this is a good sign to me because it means that I'm feeling again something besides anger at my ex-boss. So, I have some lofty goals for this 12 weeks. I want to lose at least 25 lbs of fat if not more. I have done the free days before where I felt so sick the next day from eating sugar that I just wanted to curl up in a ball all day long. This challenge I plan to cut back on those free day sugar binges and have just one free meal instead of binging the whole day. I'm hoping this will help lose more body fat during the challenge if not actual lbs. The BF % is more important. So, like I said. I am so glad to see this forum here and I plan on checking in at least every morning when I hop on the computer. Today is my first day of this challenge and so far it's going great :) I had my myoplex shake for breakfast, and the rest of my meals are all planned - #2 - egg white omelet, wheat bagel #3 - sweet potato, grilled chicken #4 - EAS bar #5 - fish, brown rice, veggie, salad #6 - whey protein shake, maybe some fiber one cereal dry (I'm going to try cutting back on my last carb of the day but we'll see).

Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (254 posts) at 08:08 PM:
I'm not sure how WW would compare. A serving of meat is 3pts, and since BFL is high in protein you may find you go over your points! WW offers a nutritional card that calculates points based on the calories and fat per serve - if you cant get that PM me with the stats of the shakes and I'll look it up for you on mine. I havent incorportate the 2, but I have done WW in the past with great sucess, but it didnt teach me to eat properly, just how to get away with eat a lot of crap without putting on weight! :-)
