Thread: SO ANNOYED AT THE GYM TODAY!!!! (222 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (95 posts) at 07:56 PM:
Punch the bitch in the face Rebecca.....Ask her whether your posture was right when you threw her an upper-cut! ;) I had some guy come into the "LADIES ONLY GYM".... So he can bench press a rhino, but he can't read! *Rolls eyes* He was training this girl, and he calls over to me, "I think that'll be too heavy for you love!" So I shot him a look and told him that I'm not paying him to train me, and he should concentrate on his client. Of course the swine was right, and I could barely lift it, but by god I made sure I did LOL! I don't know about hitting my 10, but I certainly hit my 20!

Body for Life Forum Message by emKse (40 posts) at 08:07 PM:
yeah a trainer at my gym tried to tell me i was lifting too much weight when i was trying to hit my 10 too! he was like "do you really want to look like him?" and pointed to this really buff dude. isnt it gym-etiquitte to MYOB unless asked for assistance???

But having interest in owning my own gym in the past I know as a gym owner, I would of told her not to eat that stuff at the front counter. Its like having the receptionist at a drug rehab center do a line of cocaine in front of patients.

Thread: I'm having problems with my Chest workout and hitting my 10's (92 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennie (23 posts) at 10:40 AM: I'm having problems with my Chest workout and hitting my 10's
I'm in my second week. And today was my UBWO. I can't seem to really feel my chest when I workout. I can't hit my 10's either. I hit my 10's on all the rest of my UBWO, but the Chest is really hard for me. I'm doing the dumbbell bench press, and flyes. Am I doing something wrong? Now, I've done the bench press with the barbell before a while ago..and I can seem to feel it more with that. Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do to improve my chest workout? thanks xoxo, jen

Body for Life Forum Message by Ursula (524 posts) at 12:10 PM:
Can you try doing really slow flyes (or is it flies lol)? Try to really focus on using those muscles. Or up the wieght a bit and see if that makes a differance. I have the same problem, and I think it may be on account of I move to fast. Urs

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennie (23 posts) at 12:14 PM:
yea, that's probably what it is. thanks for your response :) xoxo, Jen

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (5 posts) at 12:45 PM:
When I need a boost, I do drop sets. Start with a weight where you can do maybe 8 reps before failure. Then drop off a little weight and immediately do more until failure again. Drop more weight, do it again. Eventually you'll get down to where a couple of pounds are nearly impossible. Believe me, you'll feel it the next day! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by TracyJeffries (1221 posts) at 12:48 PM:
At the end of my chest workout I will do Pushups. Usually two sets to failure and failure means only 12 for me. :(

Body for Life Forum Message by fromfat2firm (16 posts) at 06:42 PM:
Do you workout at a gym? Have you tried using some chest machines like the pec flye, chest press, incline chest press or the assisted chin up and dip machine? Go slow and controlled. I also like to do some push ups or v sits in between my sets. I really push my upper body and I'm usually sore the next day. I'll try a heavy weight for my 6 reps, but if I can only do 3 then I drop down the weight some. But at least I tried and I know what to push for as I get stronger. It's harder with free weights I know because you really have to concentrate on form. I hope you find something that works for you. Angel

Body for Life Forum Message by Chachi (202 posts) at 07:04 PM:
I agree with Urs! Slow it down a bit, or try switching it up. Or maybe a heavier weight. Here are some gool alternatves to Dumbell chest press, Use an incline sometimes, or do them laying on a Exercise ball! Also try a "Slight" decline dont try a full decline yet untill you are comfortable lifting weights that way. Dumbell flyes do nothing for me either, I do better with cable flyes or a barbell. Another Good one to do I love this one.... get an exercise ball lay across it on your belly walk out with your hands until the ball is right at your ankles then do eight pushups while balancing your feet on the ball. Be care full you will learn all about the floor. ;) if done correctly you will really hit them pecs and also stablizer muscle to! Keep punchin Chachi

Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (268 posts) at 08:45 PM:
I do chest presses with 30 pound dumbbells on my set of 6. It is all I can do to get 6, then drop down to 25# for my last set of 12. My arms are usually SOOO fatiqued by the end of it, does that mean that my chest is not getting the work?? I am sure I'm hitting my 10, but am I using the wrong muscles? I am usually slightly sore to the front of my underarms after UBWO day. So, I figure I must be doing it alright. Any comments?

I ordered a box of Myoplex carb sense bars from vitaglo.com (10.00 a box)....they were great. Packed with protein. I just placed a re-order for 3 boxes to get me thru the remainder of this challenge and thru the Holiday's "when I want something chocolaty"

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (459 posts) at 04:04 PM:
I've come to love vitalglo.. I got 3 cases of 50g RTD's, along with 8 boxes of bars (various ones) for $85. If I paid regularly, I would have easily paid $300 or more.

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (459 posts) at 04:05 PM:
Oh, BTW, if you want a real treat of a bar, try Promax Chocolate Mint or Black Forest Cake. They're a bit higher in sugar, but they have become my 'dessert'.

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (857 posts) at 04:28 PM:
Promax??? that's new, haven't seen that before. I try and stay away form those that have more than just a few grams of sugar...I also try and stay away from those with over about 18 carbs.... I'll give on the calories a little (about 50) to get higher protein and fewer carbs and less fat. I love vitaglo.....my new favorite site (besides e-bay).....I also ordered some "creatine chews" (1500 mg of creatine......we'll see. This is the first time I will have used a creatine supplement.......ya never know what might be down the road, I may love the effects or I might not like them at all.

seeking advice from users....good for women? for muscle and lean body mass? for strength? help please!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (26 posts) at 04:09 PM:
Hey I started using it again in the Betagen, it really helps recovery time for me....I get really sore and am actually afraid that I won't heal in time to do my next work out but with the Betagen now I recover much faster. It really helps build lean muscle mass. I totally recommend taking it, Syliva aka Cookie1135 takes it too

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (857 posts) at 04:22 PM:
now, tell me, how do you use it? in the morning before a workout aftre a workout before bed what's the best for women? will it make me gain weight? OR will it help me move things around a bit and create better muscle mass from fat tissue? I don't feel like I know enough.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (26 posts) at 04:41 PM:
All I know so far is that you need to be sure to drink lots of water! I take the full 2 scoops with 6 oz. of water 3 times a day with my CLA. I take it with my 9/12/3 o'clock meals. It is supposed to help build muscle which we know for a fact burns FAT...but muscle weighs more than fat, so be SURE you are tracking your BF% so you aren't freaking out thinking you are gaining weight when you are probably gaining muscle and losing FAT!

it also helps a lot with muscle soreness. i didn't use the full dose but added it right into my nutrition shakes, low taking vanilla protein shake and addding frozen peaches and betagen almost tastes like ice cream.

Body for Life Forum Message by emKse (40 posts) at 06:43 PM:
when i called BFL support they said they highly recommend betagen for women. it has a significantly less sugar count than phosphagen and you can count on it to get the job done (muscle recovery) unlike straight creatin where if you arent taking it rightly it's just going straight through you. I havent used betagen yet but after hearing so many good things on it I ordered it just this week and cant wait to see how it helps!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Paul F (37 posts) at 07:23 AM:
I think you're overreacting. it seems evident that this gym is not Frag free, so really, you can complain all you want, but the owner's not going to change anything. If Frag free is something you are looking for then stop rewarding a gym owner that isn't taking your concerns into consideration by paying him. Find another gym.

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (169 posts) at 08:36 AM:
That must be REALLY annoying and you pay good money to be there. Who are they to treat paying customers like that? What's the number to the gym? Have a bunch of people call in and complain, then maybe the owner will back down. :) Good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (2035 posts) at 07:06 PM:
You could try a different approach and walk behind him with one of those air santizer cans and give him a "GOOD SPRAY" when he walks by! I use to go to the gym very early and there was this guy that STUNK SO BAD, I mean like the toilet! and it would just ooze out of his pores, well I started walking around with this mini can of lysol and every time he walked by, I gave him a little shot! EVERYONE GOT THE HINT! including him and trust me when I say, everyone does not have the balls to stand up for what they believe. I understand where you are coming from, we have those people at the gym too. Way too much cologne for that type of atmosphere! You are there to work out not cut off the oxygen supply! Good luck!

Working at Lane Bryant we are trained to do bra fittings and its unbelievable how much difference the right bra makes. Yesterday I swear the lady looked like she lost 20 pounds and all she did was come in and buy the right size/style bra for her body type. Everyone-GO GET FITTED! Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (412 posts) at 09:16 AM:
Jams...that makes you a 34 B, according to "fitting standards" BTW...if youre wearing a 36B on the smallest notches-thats close to a 34 B

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1834 posts) at 09:35 AM:
Dana - now I'm confused. I know I got the original "formula" wrong but if I'm 32" under & 35" puppies what the hell am I? I think 34B no? Not 32C (me a C, now thats funny).

Body for Life Forum Message by JamsN4 (3 posts) at 10:03 AM:
Thanks for the feedback Dana. My typo (had 36 on my mind) I measure 38 at the largest which is really quite hysterical after losing 40-50 lbs and nursing 4 kids. I truly do not look like a D-

Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (412 posts) at 10:06 AM:
Flower...according to the ol' "standards" you WOULD be a 32C!!! But...like everything else-it isnt 100% accurate on every person. (Hopefully its right though cuz a "C" would be awesome huh? hehe) The measurement UNDER the puppies is the BAND SIZE. The measurement AROUND the puppies is your cup size. For me... According to the measurements I SHOULD be a 38C but Im a B cup Booo-hoooo!

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1834 posts) at 10:10 AM:
Well I'll tell you one thing for sure, I will be trying on a 32C in the very near future. I can put 2 fingers in the cups of my 34B bras so I will probably be reporting back with a 34A!!!

But, if you find a jean that you love, and they're a little too short…go ahead and take the hem out. Just be sure that the hem falls to the bottom of your heel in the back to avoid high-waters. Hi gang! As mentioned in a prior post, I'm camping at Lake Jennings for 9 days with the main goal to get a head start on my book. I took a few pictures this afternoon. Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1834 posts) at 09:49 AM:
I think your doctor is full of it too. I've always drank alot of water, even prior to BFL. Its to the point where I feel like I'm addicted to it, ie. carrying a full glass with ice, not half a glass around the house with me, to bed etc. So I asked my doctor, he told me that too much is not good & could affect my electrolytes (sp). Yeah okay, whatever. He also told me that "my addiction" was a psychological problem and to go look it up. I went to the library and sure enough found it in some psychology books - there is such an addiction LOL. My addictions are few, but the water addiction rates way up there along with my Lypsol addiction (and yes cigarettes).

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (263 posts) at 10:15 AM:
John Stossel of 20/20 did a segment regarding water intake on a recent show. There is no solid medical evidence proving that drinking 64 oz. a day is what you should be doing. I think people get confused because prior to going on BFL they don't drink water and then they start BFL and they drink the recommended water and they start to lose weight, so they start associating losing weight with drinking water. Personally, I say do what your body tells you. I try to drink 96-128 oz a day, but it's partially to give my mouth something to do other than wanting to chew on food I shouldn't be eating. It is also helpful in keeping the hunger pangs to a minimum. I think the type of foods you eat are much better at eliminating water weight than drinking all that extra water.

One of the coolest things I learned in Pathophysiology was about rare centrally-mediated diseases... like where people have an impaired "thirst center" in the brain, that tells them they're SUPER thirsty all the time. These people often do have electrolyte imbalances and suffer some pretty crazy consequences... like hypertension, edema, heart failure, etc because of rediculous fluid overload.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1834 posts) at 03:00 PM:
I have no symptoms of rediculous fluid overload - no electrolyte imbalances, no hypertension, no edema, and so far no heart failure.

Ok....here's my .02. Base it on the color of your urine. Slightly yellow to clear, and you're doing fine. Darker yellow....drink up. Remember the saying ...although when saying white...think clear... WHITE...IS...RIGHT. ;)

Body for Life Forum Message by PharmerStephanie (23 posts) at 08:37 PM:
You missed the point Flower... I wasn't talking about you, or your "water addiction." I just felt like adding an interesting tidbit about a REALLY rare, and VERY extreme circumstance where people LITERALLY drown themselves in fluids. I seriously doubt that your affinity for water is anywhere near the magnitude of the problem I was talking about... and therefore your personal experiences disprove nothing. =)

I found an unbelievable way to eat cottage cheese the other day! Mix 2 cups of lowfat cottage cheese in a blender and add a packet of dissolved Knox unflavored gelatin (dissolve it in a little bit of warm water first). Blend. Sprinkle Crystal Light Lemonade powder to taste. Let it sit in the fridge for a short while and it will thicken up even more. Oh my gosh- it tastes just like lemon cheesecake!

Thread: British dishes BFL style.... (18 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (95 posts) at 09:21 AM: British dishes BFL style....
For all those UK BFL members, as well as those who live in very cold climates, I have some great traditional dishes which I've modified to keep you warm during these awful winter months. Everyone knows there's nothing better than comming home from the bus stop after work, when it's below zero, to a warm house and a big dish of comfort food, but we can't really do that anymore on BFL. Fear not! I've been experimenting..... Cottage Pie 1/2lb to 1lb of lean minced beef (you can used minced lamb or turkey, or even a vegie substitute like quorn if you like) 1 tin of carrots 1 tin of chopped tomatoes (I use plum tomatoes) 1 handful of dry onion (or you can use fresh onion if you prefer) 2 bovril cubes (US folks might use boulion cubes or gravy granuals) Salt and Pepper to season Instructions: Place the mince into a large pan and cook on a high heat until browned. Place a lid over the mince and carefully drain the fat into a bowl, and disgard. (I have found that pouring the fat down the sink will cause blockages). Then tip the mince onto a dinner plate which is covered in kitchen roll, and press a few more sheets of kitchen roll on top of it to really soak up any fat that is still covering the mince. By doing this you are not only making the meal healthier, but also it tastes 100 times better the less grease it has in it. Rinse out the pan you have just used and return to the stove. Add the tin of chopped tomatoes, and the tin of carrots, (including the juices), and a handful of dry onions. Then add 1 bovril cube, or a beef bouilon cube, and start to stir over a medium heat. Pick up the plate of browned mince and carefully add to the pan, folding in the mixture. When all the ingredients are finally put together and stired, add a bit of salt and pepper, place the lid back on and leave to simmer on a low light for a few hours, stiring every now and then. This mixture is not meant to be watery, but nice and thick. You might want to add a little bit of water if you feel that the mixture is sticking or has been accidentally left to boil for more than 10 minutes. This dish is great because you can make it the night before, or even before you go to work. The longer you leave it to cook the better it tastes, and you can keep it for a few days in the fridge. Before you serve add an extra bovril cube, or boulion cube to thicken and add flavour, and serve with steamed/boiled broccoli and cauliflower. This is real comfort food, and I eat it 2-3 times a week. Yum!

Body for Life Forum Message by forest tech (2 posts) at 09:15 PM: FRUSTERATION am i doing this right??
I am 138lbs, a female, 5'2" and muscular. I have been very active since last January and I started BFL this monday. I am trying to eat the 6 meals a day, but I find I'm starving at night. I am eating around 1400-1600 cal a day, but it seems I take in more late at night. What can I do to stop this and am I eating too little and sabotaging my progress? How strict is the 40-40-20% protien, carbs, fat? What do some of you more seasoned BFLers do?? THANKS!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (273 posts) at 10:14 PM:
Hey there, and welcome! I don't see that everyone here adheres to 40-40-20 eating exclusively, so I think you can relax on that a bit if you are finding that really restrictive. When I'm doing 40-40-20 I do it 100%. One tecnique I've always heard if you are still hungry even though you are eating 6 times a day is to add more veggies to your meals - fribrous things like celery, broccoli and cauliflower that fill you up more but don't necessarily add calories. Remember even if you have had your six meals or they are already planned out, you can ALWAYS add (the good) veggies at any time of day - they are not a bad thing and will not inhibit results. Not very fun I know, but otherwise you can try drinking green tea or herbal tea or other zero calorie drinks to fill you up. The good news is, this is your metabolism that is so stoked right now, doing just what you want it to do. Thing is, you should never be hungry. Always try to make the right choice when it comes to feeding the furnace...good luck. You sound very focused.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (273 posts) at 10:18 PM:
Oh, I would also suggest a night snack that is slow digesting on the glycemic scale. Protein at night really helps you feel not so hungry. Try 1/4 cup 1% Cottage cheese, 1/2 fresh or frozen unsweetened rasperries and 1 tsp slivered almonds. This is a nice small evening snack. Calories: 100 Carbs: 11g Protein: 10g Fats: 2g

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (273 posts) at 10:26 PM:
Here's a list of things you can eat freely all day that should not be a detriment to your goals. Pick these up whenever you are feeling hungry - or add more to your meals to carry to further. Asparagus, bell peppers, black coffee black tea, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, diet pop, herbal tea, lettuce, low-calorie drink mixes

During the weekend, (and especially on Sunday), my gym is incredibly busy, and I find myself queueing up for 10 minutes for a piece of aparatus, which seriously disrupts my LBWO and UBWO. Today I'm starting week 3, and instead of doing weight training for my upper body, I decided to do cardio. Can I do this? The BFL book instructs you to do it this way: Day 1: Weight training (UBWO or LBWO) Day 2: Cardio Day 3: Weight Training Day 4: Cardio Day 5: Weight Training Day 6: Cardio Day 7: Free Day But I'd much do it: Day 1: Cardio Day 2: Weight Training Day 3: Cardio Day 4: Weight Training Day 5: Cardio Day 6: Weight Training Day 7: Free Day I'd prefare to do it this way, by starting my first day with a cardio workout, because then my weight traing won't fall on a Sunday, and I'll get a better LB or UB workout when I do train on the weekend. I want to get the best results I can, and was wondering whether anyone else does it this way? Thanks, Jules x

Body for Life Forum Message by Kari (240 posts) at 09:27 AM:
jules - as long as your giving yourself enough rest between each workout than that is fine.... some days when i don't have time to get to the gym i will do an HIIT and an UBWO together in the same day...i don't combine when it's LBWO day as my legs are shot from the weights and there is NO way i am doing anything else on that day.... sometimes i will move an HIIT workout to my freeday..i find that when i work out on my Freeday i dont lose as much control..i feel sooo good after my workout that i don't want to ruin it by eating all crappy food....it seems to work for me .. hope this helps. k.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (95 posts) at 09:37 AM:
Thanks Kari! That really does help, I kinda felt like I wasn't really doing my workout properly when I was made to wait for other people to finish theirs. I don't go crazy on my free day when it comes to food, so I'm not worried about gaining any weight in that respect, in fact I do exercise on my free day too. I rock climb and do pilates, and I might go to starbucks for a piece of cake and a big cup of coffee, but that's as far as I go. I suppose everyone has to tailor this programme to their own specific requirements, and if that means starting my week with cardio as apposed to a weight training workout, then so be it. In fact, it might work out better, because my arms are usually very sopre after rock climbing on my free day. Thanks again! Jules xxx

I think the BFl tells us everything we need to know in order to make a transformation. I have had a couple of trainers, one got fired and one is out of town and I never see him. What I wanted was for someone to work out with me to help me reach my tens, there is something I am not tapping into yet. But that has to come from inside me, the drive to push myself, not from relying on a trainer. So now all my money is going to getting me to the Expo.

My prayers are with your family. She sounds like a strong women. I've grown up with horses and know the dangers of them. I was riding one of our own when I was about 15 and the horse spooked and I fell off and broke my back and came close to breaking an ankle. I wanted to get rid of the horse as well but we must all get back on. Your daughter is very upset now and I understand and I pray she will get better just take one day at a time. If you get rid of her horse she may be scared of them in the long term. I dont' want her to be scared I know horses are beautiful and I'm so so sorry for what happened to her. But maybe when she gets home and gets better her thoughts will be clear. I don't want her to regret getting rid of the horse. Does this horse have a bad temper. My mom trains horses and can cure their tempers. My mom trained with the best Kenny Harlow. Mr. Harlow was trained under John Lions. You can check him out on the web. I'll stop running my mouth I'll keep you and everyone in my prayers. Please keep us updated. lots of lov. Dawn

I remember those days! Who'd have thought it would be so complicated! Anyway, the reason I suggested tracking temps, is that that way you'll know if you're ovulating. If your body fat gets so low that you stop ovulating, then I don't think you'd see the temperature jump. So you'd know you'd need to gain a little fat. Just an idea! Good luck!

Well, guys, for those of you wondering, yes I am STILL out here. haha. Of course, during the week I was planning to go full out and start again, I had some medical junk come up, so I'm putting off until next week, after I've been to the doctor and such. My blog tells more of the details. http://brandisbfl.blogspot.com/ Next week, I've got the whole week off from school, so I KNOW I can start off with a super week of workouts. Thanks for all your posts. They are always encouraging to me, even though I don't always post. :)

Thread: I'm I eating enough? (79 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by piffer (2 posts) at 07:55 AM: I'm I eating enough?
I'm 3 weeks into the challenge and went to gym to get a body fat aynalisis. The trainer looked at my food journel and told me I was not eating enough. She figured, I was only eating 1500-1600 calories per day. Then she did a food plan for me. Then I showed her my B4 photo and took my off shirt She stated, that is a big improvement. I'm confused between earting enough to burn Fat and calorie deficiet. Does anyone have any feedback? Thank Piffer

Body for Life Forum Message by Kari (240 posts) at 07:59 AM:
piffer...try using www.fitday.com to track your calories...its the only way i know what i'm eating... also..some poeple need to eat more or less than what it says in order to lose fat...i knwo that if i dip below like 1700cals i don't lose any weight...so i have to keep my cals at about 1800... it may take a while to find what cal level works best for you...but make sure to keep track on fitday so you know exactly what your eating...

Body for Life Forum Message by Kari (240 posts) at 08:12 AM:
here...this is taken from the hussman website: Again, a good rule of thumb for fat loss is to multiply your target weight by 9-11 calories per pound daily. Few people will get good fat loss results on less than 8 or more than 12 daily calories per pound of target weight. If you're eating far too few calories, you will lose weight. It's just that part of that will be muscle mass and water, and you'll slow your thyroid. If you're not losing weight on the scale, you're either eating enough (and building muscle) or too much (and not losing fat).

Body for Life Forum Message by leehigh (68 posts) at 09:01 AM:
If I do that it says that I only need 1350 cals per day. Doesnt that seem like too little? If not no wonder I cant lose weight! I think I will try it for a week and see what happens. Thanks for the info.

Body for Life Forum Message by Ursula (524 posts) at 09:53 AM:
If I do that I would be down to between 1125-1375. I think thats to low for me too. I think I have been to low for a while now. Taking in around 1500... I would much rather gain some fat, than to lose my hard earned muscles. Urs

Thread: WATER WATER WATER??? (173 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (2055 posts) at 09:01 AM: WATER WATER WATER???
Ok this may sound like a really stupid question but I'm gonna ask it anyway LOL...can anybody tell me WHY is water an important factor in helping you to lose weight and bodyfat? How exactly does it help, aside from keeping you hydrated? Why is 1 gallon a day the ideal amount to drink? Our bodies are all different sizes and shapes and yet most people agree that 1 gallon a day is an appropriate amount. Why...why....why?

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1834 posts) at 09:39 AM:
I'm certain I've read somewhere a couple of things, first of all to process all that water takes "X" amount of calories (300-500 or something???), second it actually helps water flush out of your system as in the water that sits in fat & gives our fat that coveted "plump" look. Sound good?

Body for Life Forum Message by Ursula (524 posts) at 09:46 AM:
Also getting up and down to go pee that many times during the day also burns calories :) What? No good? Oh well I tried.. Urs

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (459 posts) at 09:54 AM:
Lisa, you should be drinking 0.6 ounces of water per pound of bodyweight per day. Isn't peeing fun? :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (129 posts) at 10:11 AM:
Just think of the great core muscles you're building trying to hold it until you can make it to the bathroom! Laurie

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (2055 posts) at 10:16 AM:
Flower, yes that makes sense. Thanks :D Ursula...LMAO its true though, sometimes its literally a "run" to the bathroom and yes that has to burn some calories :D K, NO PEEING is not fun its sickening LOL. According to your method for determining the proper amount of water to drink, I should have 78 ozs a day. That doesn't sound like enough. Does it?

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (2055 posts) at 10:17 AM:
Laurie...ROFLMAO!!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1395 posts) at 10:46 AM:
In BFL book, he suggests a minimum of 80 oz per day. I am a smaller person and I just CAN'T get down a gallon in a day - there is just no way. I get in 80 oz each day, feel hydrated and not bloated. I get bloated if I don't get in my water - the next day is terrible!! N

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (459 posts) at 11:25 AM:
the 0.6oz method is what I learned when I was studying for my PT certification.. Not to say that more is not OK, but remember when they said 8 8oz glasses of water a day was waht you need?

Body for Life Forum Message by Myintencity (10 posts) at 11:44 AM:
Points to ponder: If you havent been drinking enough water then you are retaining more salt than you need. That, oddly enough, results in water retention and under performing liver and kidneys. The "mission" of these organs is to Metabolise Fat, among many other things, so keep them hydrated so they function properly. Additionally, as you continue to give your body all the water it needs it will discard what it doesn't. For instance, the water it may have be holding in the ankles, hips and especially the belly! Want proof? Check out my week 12 photos next month{currently in week 6 and ROCKIN). So drink throughout the day, don't guzzle to make up for not drinking as often as you should, stop 2-3 hours before bed(it'll help you sleep better, know what I mean?), and Be Mindful, if you're thirsty-you're dehydrated.

Body for Life Forum Message by PharmerStephanie (23 posts) at 02:43 PM:
Ok... definitely take a look at the "NO MORE WATER?!?!?!" thread in the Eating for Life section of the boards. *Water does NOT burn calories -- the body has a counter-current osmotic system that requires no energy consumption to "process" water. *Icewater does not burn even more calories. *Water does NOT flush out your system... there are some (rare) pseudo-exceptions, such as certain metabolites of drugs/toxins whose elimination is related to urine flow -- but even then, you don't eliminate them faster or better, but you just have to eliminate them from MORE fluid! *Drinking tons of water does NOT make your liver and kidneys work better. *Adequate hydration DOES :) make you look plumper, so wrinkles soften ever so slightly. *Adequate water consumption (i.e. not drowning oneself in tons more than one actually needs...) will help with energy levels and lifting/cardio performance. *Yes, if you're thirsty, you're already below optimal hydration. *More is not really better... it's just not necessarily worse. *Drinking a glass of water CAN help you avoid heading back to the refrigerator. ;) *Being dehydrated DOES increase the munchies! Sometimes the thirst response is very non-specific. In the case of the post on the EFL boards, post-birthing incontinence was an issue. No sense in over-burdening one's bladder in this situation. If you are adequately hydrated at 64 ounces (especially for a small woman), stop there! If you're big, do extended aerobic activities like soccer games, sweat like the dickens even when you're just sitting around, etc maybe you need extra beyond a gallon! Everyone is not built the same, and you should be able to gauge your own personal volume needs based upon thirst, performance level, general feelings. Stephanie (hops off her soapbox)

Hey G, Your body will store water everywhere if it doesn't hink it is getting enough, or if it doesn't know when it will get more. Also water removes toxins( nothing scary just stuff the body doesn't need . Does't add calories, and transports all the right stuff to the right places, also can ensure one does not overindulge in other things ( like food ) Yours in Health, Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by Myintencity (10 posts) at 10:46 PM:
Response- I did not say drinking tons of water will make your liver and kidneys work better. I said keep hydrated so that they will function properly. I will add that, conversly, an underhydrated liver or kidneys will perform poorly and in time shut down altogether. p.s. Dr. "Soapbox", sometimes less is more.

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (459 posts) at 11:22 AM:
Supposedly there are suppliments that help, but I have never tried them. My LBWO always kicks my ass the 2 days after, so I purposely take off (from everything the next day.) It's perfectly normal to feel the 'worst' 2 days later..

my muscle soreness for legs lasts about 1 day....but I still get my cardio in on that damn stairmaster. Upper body is what kills me....shoulder pain kept me off the UBWO for a week and when I went back on Monday...well, today I'm still sore.

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (459 posts) at 11:34 AM:
Yeah, but with the RT issue, is that a surprise? I think she's talking general muscle fatigue & 'good pain'. As opposed to our UB 'bad pain'.

not just shoulder pain.....I'm talking all all over upper body. I figure if there's not some tenderness I didn't work quite hard enough or didn't use quite enough weight. sore is good!

Streching and cardio can help flush some latic acid out of your muscle which will get rid of some of that pain.

Thread: Depression and weight loss.... (167 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (95 posts) at 10:15 AM: Depression and weight loss....
These last few weeks I've been feeling pretty low. I'm not sure whether it's hormonal or because the season has changed and the weather is getting me down, but I can't help but feel slightly depressed. I went shopping last week and nothing fitted me. Not because I've put weight on, but because I've lost so much. I'm buying clothes 4 sizes smaller than 7 months ago, but I don't feel very happy about it. When I look in the mirror I don't recognise myself anymore, and people keep comming up to me and saying that I look so different, and I wish they wouldn't remind me about it. I've never been this slim, and it seems as though I've blamed my past depression on my weight. Somehow I thought that being thin would lift this little black cloud, but it hasn't. I really love the way I look, and I love working out and following BFL, but I just don't recognise myself anymore. It sounds mad, but I just can't believe that the girl in the mirror is me, and I feel quite unnerved whenever I get in the shower or when I get changed in front of the mirror, because I've only ever known what it's like to be in a fat body, and to see my ribs and my hips is very, very uncomfortable. I'm also getting a lot more male attention than I used to and I got pestered on the train a few days ago which was really scary. It's like being fat was a bit of a security blanket, and now it's been taken away from me. My friend had breast implants last year. She suffered with low self esteem, and blamed it on her flat chest because she had always been teased about it. In the months leading up to her operation she seemed so excited, in the same way I was when I wanted to get the the size I am now, but after the operation she suffered really bad depression because she couldn't adjust to her new figure. I feel the exact same way. Has anyone felt this way? - Jules x

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (857 posts) at 11:14 AM:
I figured out (atleast for me) you have to love yourself.....from the outside in, and from the inside out. Since I decided to love who I am (regardless of my size) I dropped the drugs (wellbutrin) and I don't drink as much anymore (a glass of wine a couple of times a week now as opposed to a 12 pack a couple of times a week before ).....I found that I can be a wild and crazy FUN girl without alcohol, which totally pisses some of my friends off....oh well, if they are truly my friends...they'll still be there regardless. You have to happy in your skin, whether it's a size 18 skin or a size 8 skin. Clothes NEVER fit regardless of your size. And those men on the train....you could probably kick their asses now that your fit and healthy. Most of us have had feelings of this sort at one time or another. So, you my dear, are not alone.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (26 posts) at 11:35 AM:
Jules, Hey there. I don't know if you read a post I did a few days back about knowing what happened. But I totally understand where you are coming from and you are not alone. For me I completed the challenge and was very successful at it back in 2002 but that was at a very difficult time in my life and I used the program to take the focus of reality, off my life, my problems, my emotional struggles and feelings of loneliness and low self esteem...and you know what it worked....for the 12 weeks. When I was done however, even though I looked different I WAS the same person, with the same insecurities and emotional issues because I had not dealt with them. For the last 3 years I put my weight back on and have done a lot of "self help" type reading and really dealt with my issues head on. Now I can honestly say that I am as fixed as I can be emotionally now I am ready to get the outside of me to catch up with the inside of me. For so many people they say that this program changed their life more on the inside than on the outside...for me back in 2002 that was not the case. I only changed physically and it took a lot more work to change emotionally. You will be fine, you need to really look at your issues, deal with them find YOU again, learn to recognize yourself. Hopefully you will maintain your weight loss success, keep working out and eating right, and fixing your mind at the same time, I wish I had. Hang in there! You are awesome for being brave enough to come to the group with an issue like this, we will be your support, your motivator, your source of information and knowledge and help you through anything we can, as best we can! Have a great BFL Day!

I'm sure you have people telling you how proud you should be of your weight loss accomplishments. I hope you are! But I can understand the unwanted attention issues you discussed in your post. I lost 25lbs about three years ago and went from a size 10 to a 4. Although I loved my new body, I didn't appreciate the unwanted attention. I have since decided that dealing with issues by insulating myself with a layer of fat is not a good way to go, so I am now trying to lose the weight again. Hang in there and try to identify what the real issue is - it's not your weight (just my guess). Good luck and know that we are always here to support you!

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1834 posts) at 12:23 PM:
My issues are a bit different but sort of the same. I wanted to loose weight, look great, blah, blah, blah. So I did it & was still not happy. I got all the compliments, congratulations etc. and was still not satisfied (okay deep down I know I look perfectly fine, acceptable) but really thats NOT what its all about. I doubt very much that if I turned out "perfect looking" I would feel it. If you're anything like me at all your issues are NOT what you look like they're more about whats inside of you, whatever that may be. I've been trying to figure out what mine are and am not close yet as far as I can see. The weather is just as dreary here in Toronto (Canada) as England. Rain, wind and more rain. If summer were around the corner as opposed to Christmas I wonder if that would lift the dark cloud. I've heard what kmachate suggested actually does work for some people.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (95 posts) at 05:55 PM:
Thanks to all of you brave people who have replied to my post. It is very unlike me to talk about my feelings.... The old British stiff-upper-lip and all that. I'm glad that it's quite normal to be feeling like this, and I'm sorry I might have upset people with my post, but I really just had to let it all out or I might have exploded! LOL. I know what my problem is. I have never been very successful in love, career wise, (even though I'm only 23...give me time!), and I've never been thin before. I suppose I have always attributed being happy and successful with being thin, and now that I'm rounding that corner, I see that although my body has progressed, the other aspects of my life have stayed the same. I am determined not to sabotage myself however, and I know that putting the weight back on is going to make me feel even worse. I suppose I'm going to have to include more into my life, not just gym sessions, in order to get more out of life. I'm thinking about joining an over-eaters annonymous group once a week, because my weight gain is purely through binge eating, not just eating the wrong "types" of food every now and then. I'm also going to get another job, and really focus on getting the career I want off the ground. It's time to set myself some other goals, rather than just the weight loss goal. I've been focusing too much of my energy on this one thing for too long. Don't get me wrong, it's still a priority, but maybe it shouldn't be the only priority. Thank you again for all your kind words of support. You have no idea just how grateful I am to you all. All my love, Jules xxx

Thanks Sylvia! I'm glad I posted this thread, because after I'd written it I was in two minds as to actually hit the enter button. I'm sure this is just a bump in the road, and I'll get over it. The fact that xmas is comming up and I have to face people who I haven't seen for ages, commenting on my body has been playing on my mind these last few days. Plus the fact that work has been pretty unrewarding lately thanks to budget cuts, and not to mention pay cuts, has been weighing me down. Again, xmas is just around the corner, and I have presents to by with nothing in the bank to fund this shopping spree. I've just been letting things build up on top of me recently, and holding it all in hasn't helped at all. I'm glad so many women have been kind enough to answer this topic, (as well as Kmachate dude!), because it's reasured me that we all feel like this. Especially those of us who have suffered whith our weight most of our lives. None of my friends have had weight problems, so it's difficult to explain to them how I feel without them saying, "Oh don't be so daft! Just cheer up and buy yourself something in a size small. That'll perk you up!" At 23 I shouldn't be feeling like my life is going nowhere, but when I look at it, I see that maybe things aren't progressing as quickly or smoothly as I'd hoped. Thanks again, Jules xxx

No Stephanie, you're right I do have self esteem issues. You hit the nail on the head. I think though, that perhaps, and this is why BFL is so good exercise wise, that I should just go to the gym to do my set workouts. I've been focusing too much attention on the gym, and need to re-focus on the other aspects of my life. Exercise is a bit like chocoalte, in the respect that it gives you a buzz while you're doing it, but it doesn't last very long after you've finished. I'd love to take some self defence classes, but I think I'm best doing some soul searching before adding more gym sessions into my week. I'm relying on the buzz too heavily, and neglecting the other areas of my life that desperately need attention. When I'm feeling better, kick boxing and matial arts is deffinately something I'll be getting into. Thanks babe, Jules x

My 11 yr old took them the other day and needless to say I was horrified. I have been in a little bit of denial about how far I had let myself go but those pictures really make you face the truth fast! I went to Target to order them through one of those Kodak digital picture makers. I purposely did not go to the CVS store because I didn't want to face the photo person after they had seen my pictures. In Target you order and pick up your envelope from the bin a few days later. WEll....After I pick out the pictures to print the stupid machine freezes with my before picture on the screen! I tried everything to get it to move to a new screen to no avail. I finally swallowed my pride and called an employee over to help me. I was trying so hard to not just die of embarrassment as I was explaining what happened as he is looking at the screen with me in my 3 sizes too small bikini and all my extra rolls of fat. After about twenty minutes he said he can't fix the machine and will need to call the service tech. Then he walks away with my picture still up there on the screen for anyone in the store to see! I got in my car to go home and didn't know whether to Laugh or cry. I guess this is Just the motivation I need to complete this challenge and start living the BFL way! thanks for listening! Karyn

Laugh Honey, Laugh!!!! That's a moment that you hope to never revisit again....we've ALL been there. Post those pictures, in a few weeks you'll be so glad you did WHEN you can see how far you've come......when that bikini (that used to be 3 sizes too small) actually fits, and fits well.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (26 posts) at 11:18 AM:
I'm with Ellen...Laugh! That truly sucks but it is extra motivation...I have to see the same person every two weeks with my photos, at first I was embarrased, now I am excited to see what changes I have made and I don't care if they see! At least we are doing something about it! Like Ellen (gymbeamin') said, post your pictures, I have done it to help hold me accountable...it is humilitating yes, but when you have new ones to post with all the fantastic progress you have made you will feel such a sense of pride and accomplishment. I am truly sorry that happened to you, I just can't imagine, but no sense cyrin'!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Jen in Maine (4 posts) at 11:31 AM: Printing out 2006 Challenge Packet?
Hi, I just downloaded the 2006 Entry Packet today and printed it. Is that what I was supposed to do? I hope so because it used a LOT of colored ink! I had phoned BFL and registered by phone and thought I'd receive something in the mail but I never did (it was supposed to be sent out in October). Anyway - I started my challenge on November 14th. That's an okay date for being entered in the 2006 Challenge, right? Thanks! Jen

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (459 posts) at 11:33 AM:
Yeah, I considered sending a bill to EAS for red toner.. I'm not sure if they are sending them out or not.. But it sounds like your start date is good :)

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (857 posts) at 11:37 AM:
ahhh, I just printed it in black & white, no big deal. I'm actually going to enter with challenge 2 starting January 2nd...looking forward to working my ass "up" (not off)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jen in Maine (4 posts) at 11:50 AM:
So you must be doing your first challenge now? And then starting your second in Jan.? I'll be done my first in January also. I would think the first challenge would be the most dramatic results...but I'll probably enter all of them. I thought about the black and white but wasn't sure. haha - kinda silly I guesss! Just thought that I might be the only one printing it out and that everyone else got one in the mail that was all plastic-y and beautiful...:) kmachate - when we win we will be re-imbursed for the red toner along w/the supplements, right? lol

This is my first time posting here on the tracker though I have been lurking here everyday. There was a profile with pictures of a woman that I am looking for because it inspired me. Maybe someone knows who she is. In her final picture, she has amazingly flat abs, she is standing in her livingroom (?) with her daughter. THey look more like sisters and if I remember correctly, she is wearing a long skirt and a belly baring shirt and she looks absolutely fantastic. Anyone? I know this is a long shot but it's worth a try. In addition, my goal for this challenge is to put my own pictures on the tracker. I am in week 10 and still haven't figured it out! But I'm working on it. :) ~Debbie

Sorry, I goofed above sending the original message again. Oh well. I will look at Linne. It's possible but I'm thinking she's the one with the new breast implants? She's looking really great too.

I thought Linne as well, looked like Moggie, but that photo is gone. I also thought of our good friend Go4Steffie - I looked on hers too. Steff, didn't you have one up like that at one time too?

Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (8 posts) at 12:12 PM:
Nope, not Linne. But, wow, if you look at Linne from top picture to bottom you can actually SEE her legs shaping up! She is one of the reasons I keep doing BFL cuz you can actually see the great progress!!

Body for Life Forum Message by dreambig (39 posts) at 12:30 PM:
The only one that comes to mind is Margroovy- she looks amazing and is standing in her picture with her daughter beside her. You may want to try under Search Profiles and go by an estimated age, or by gender.

I too remember a picture of Linne with her daughter in the living room. She looked incredibly tiny, which she is, and she had on a long white skirt with a cute short top showing off her great abs. I remember that picture because I kept thinking wow, I want an outfit like that for the summer:)

Hmmm... that's funny. I don't think I could actually ever get myself on stage in a bikini! Actually, that picture is my official before for this challenge but I've been at this for 3 years. The only thing is that I WAS a big ole tweaker and I never got very far. This challenge is dedicated to doing it right. I'm actually in week 10 now. I'm gonna try and get the rest of my pics posted here too. I still need work in the nutrition dept. Too much pasta. But at least I'm not eating ice cream out of the carton anymore!!! Oh yeah, thank you so much for the compliment Mel!

Thread: How many pounds of FAT can you loose in a week? (120 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Spec V Me (1 posts) at 02:06 PM: How many pounds of FAT can you loose in a week?
I have been doing a psuedo BFL plan for about 5 weeks. I have lost a total of 7 lbs of weight but according to the calculator that I use ( http://www.linear-software.com/online.html ) I have gone from 17.5% bodyfat to 9.68% in those 5 weeks, losing about 14lbs of fat and gaining 7 pounds of muscle. Is this possible? Has anyone else seen results like this? I have officially started the BFL challenge this past Sunday with my wife, but what happens when I reach my goal of 6%, should I continue with the same plan?

Body for Life Forum Message by james_bond (20 posts) at 02:37 PM:
I have read from a few places that men can safely lose up to around 3 lbs of fat per week without loosing muscle. That would equate to burning about 10500 more calories a week than you consume. More typical is 1 to 2 lbs a week. So it's possible --I believe all things are possible to those that believe ;) -- Check out the stats on some of this year's Champions... if you divide their fat loss and muscle gain to get their half-way point loss/gain.. many had similar results. I didn't check your online calculator.... so not sure how it calculates. I used a 7 site calculation method with some Accu-fitness calipers. Another thing to consider is your water retension, sodium intake and other things that can throw your initial calcs off some. The most important thing is that you're gaining muscle while loosing fat... which means you're not dipping too low in calories or completely overdoing cardio. It also means you're probably eating a good bit of protein and getting your nutrients in at optimal times during the day. Can you see and feel a noticible difference? My guess is that if you do, then you're on the right track and potentially have the right stats. As far as how to contiue?... not sure... After hitting my goal also of 6% for the challenge, I have contined on my workout plan as is but upped my caloric intake some. I have stayed at about the same BF% and have gained around another 8 lbs of lean mass half-way through my second 12 week challenge. Not sure if that helps any but stay excited! You're on to something great and will be amazed at what you can accomplish in those 12 weeks. Awesome job!

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (811 posts) at 05:13 PM:
Wow, BFL is more than a plan. It is an enrty point and a mindset leading to improved quality of life. Who wouldn't want to continue with that? Experiment and do what works for you. Yours in Health, Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by avantbond (25 posts) at 02:15 PM: BFL For Preggos
OB Suggested Daily Nutrition Goals: Consume between 100 & 200 %RDA of calcium Consume between 65 & 80 grams of protein Consume between 150 & 200 %RDA of folate Consume between 140 & 170 %RDA of iron Drink between 8 & 12 cups of water Take prenatal vitamin Consume between 1820 & 2120 calories per day WARNING: Weight gain can come more rapidly now and foods can be stored as fat a lot easier. Cardiovascular exercise is an important part of a fit pregnancy. I plan to use cardio exercise to help me maintain a healthy weight, maintain endurance, increase circulation, avoid varicose veins and feel better through out my pregnancy. I have talked with my doctor before beginning this exercise program but if anyone have been in reasonable shape before pregnancy, and you do not have any health conditions restricting you, there is no reason why you can't exercise 30 minutes a day every day. Below are some important factors that I try to keep in mind for safe cardio exercise. I avoid exercises that jar or bounce my body or risk a fall or impact to my stomach. I drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. I eat something before exercising so that my body has extra fuel to burn. I use to have a pro shake before working out, however now I have switched to oatmeal and just have my shake later. I need 300 extra calories per day during pregnancy! I wear loose breathable clothing and do not exercise in hot or humid weather. I can not not work out to the point of exhaustion. When I find that I can't talk normally during your exercise it is too strenuous. My heart rate can not exceed 140 beats per minute. I also have to remember not to do any exercises on my back after the first trimester. This can effect the circulation of the blood to the uterus and my baby. These are examples of some good cardio exercises Walking at a brisk pace Swimming Stationary bicycling Advantages: Fewer problems experienced during childbirth Enhanced post natal recovery Lower incidence of backaches and less severe headaches Enhanced body image Feelings of well being and happiness, and a positive self image Increased energy levels Increased flexibility Increased aerobic capacity Better circulation of blood to the extremities Greater muscle strength and coordination, which helps with adjusting to increased body weight and changes in balance. Pregnancy-related constipation avoidance Aerobic training will assist the weight training sessions as it would in a regular exercise regime. Waste product removal, fat loss and enhanced cardiovascular function are three benefits to be gained from aerobic work. I am developing my plan from the BFL plan. Weight train moderate, three times per week on alternating days with aerobic exercise two times per week. Not hitting my "high points" during workout. Alternating training the major muscles of the upper and lower body. Performing two exercises for each major muscle group of the upper body. Selecting one exercise and conducting five sets with it, starting with a set of 12 reps, then increasing the weight and doing 10 reps, adding more weight and doing 8 reps, adding more weight for 6 reps. Then reducing the weight and doing 12 reps. Immediately perform another set of 12 reps for that muscle group using the second selected exercise. For each muscle group, resting for one minute between the first four sets. Then completing the final two sets with no rest in between, wait two minutes before moving on to your next muscle group, completing this pattern five times for the upper body training experience and four times for the lower body training experience. Well hell, this is what I am going to do. I will go to the gym as scheduled and eat what I am suppose to but on 21 Nov, I am having Vascular Surgery, a large vein in my leg is not working right, the valves are letting blood flow  backwards and that is where I get vericose from.  I HATE THOSE UGLY THINGS! Well they are getting pulled out, so I will rest for an entire week, the week of Thanksgiving and I will pick-up where I left off!
