I would think that alot of people, no matter what their age, don't always associate healthy eating with going to the gym. I mean look at the garbage that goes along with the Atkins diet. Holy cow, lets have bacon & cheese every day for lunch! sheesh!
(To clarify, I know Atkins has helped people to lose weight I just don't think its the healthiest way to do it.)
If I were a gym owner I would probably ask my employees to eat in a break room no matter what type of food they had.
We can't control other people or their actions. If I was upset over what someone else was doing no matter what it was, all that would do is bring negativity to my day, and that is something none of us need more of. BFL is a very positive program with the potential of very positive results not only physically, but mentally as well.
Stay positive!

That reminds me...on Halloween my health club had a big bowl of assorted candies laid out for members to help themselves.
arrrgh.
I just pretended it wasn't there. And just like Mike--I waited until after my workout and had my myoplex.
mmmmmm it was good!

Speaking of halloween, I took my dtr to a party and the lady that was giving knows Im on BFL and she especially had some really healthy stuff to snack on in addition to the junk. She said she thought it was a nice change. Everyone agreed with her. Maybe I helped start a precedent

See, first reaction was, "wow this poster is overreacting", then I looked and saw it was Gary.
Sorry pal! Mea Culpa! :)
In general, I would think of this as overreacting. But then again, I don't have a compulsive eating issue. I think a good argument can be made that this does not make for a good gym environment.
Then I got to thinking- it's standard retailer practice to prohibit the eating or drinking of anything in front of customers. I would pull the gym manager aside tomorrow and tell him that you understand people gotta eat, but that it would be greatly appreciated if employees would not eat things like MickeyD's cinaminononononon rolls in the main gym.
Yeah, the more I think about it the more I think I would have been really annoyed . Nuts, now I'm hungry! Thanks alot Gary.
*mock grumble*
Where's that recipe for Cinamon Roll Myoplex...

I'm in week 2 also, and I find that I don't always feel the exercise working the specific muscles until the day after. If I'm struggling to get the weight past my shoulders, I know I'm hitting my ten. I've found it's not all about pain, but the struggle.
Keep it going though!

gbfan,
DB chest press works chest but it also works secondary muscle groups like the front deltoids and triceps. That's OK. That's the way the body works. I think it is much better to do compound lifts that work multiple muscle groups rather than just exercises that work only "beach" muscles. If you want to get more specific on your chest, keep the weights a little further to the side while you lift them. This will recruit the pectorals more. Another option is to switch up with barbell bench. If you use a wide grip you will recruit more pecs and if you use a narrow grip you will recruit more triceps. However, you can't eliminate either one. Enjoy!
Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (269 posts) at 09:09 AM
Thanks, ptwob2! I think I've been doing this for long enough now that I don't realize they're being worked as much as I used to. I vary my upper body workouts... I have 3 (one for UB Mondays, one for UB Wednesdays, and one for UB Fridays). For chest I vary with incline, flat, and decline to keep the muscles shocked (I do the same thing to vary muscle angle and stuff with the other body parts). Yesterday, when I got done with my final set of chest exercises my upper body was so fatigued, the thought crossed my mind that maybe I'm not working my chest as much as I'd thought, BUT today my pecs are feeling pretty tight. So, I'm good to go!!

Hey Jen,
If by 10s you're refering to the number of reps you're doing in a given set (and remember, my motivation is to help out), clear your mind of the notion that a successful set is one where you complete the "10th rep". Focus on the intencity of each rep from beginning to end. If your elbows are in close to your sides while benching, whether it's barbell, dumbell, or machine work you are not isolating your pecs-more likely your triceps and front deltoids are working harder. OK, here we go: Elbows Out; Focus your minds' eye on the muscle during the whole rep. Squeeze at the top of the movement, never completely lock out your arms and maintain tension throughout the entire rep. Note... you know that point where you are on , say your 7th or 8th rep and you want to stop? This is where your real gains are made. The reps you've done in this set to this point is simply the journey to the Land of Muscle. Whether you get there in 6 sets or 9, when you get there(to the Land of Muscle, that is), take what you want. Go ahead, help yourself.
BUT YOU GOTTA TAKE IT!

Hi gang!
I just found out that the Pituitary Network Association has published the latest edition of its newsletter and it includes the first of a series of articles I'm writing for them. I had contacted them several months ago looking for info about athletes with my disorder (pituitary failure). After realizing that they didn't know of any, I asked them how I could bring more awareness to this type of disorder and hopefully inspire others to hang in there despite coping with this debilitating illness.
They suggested I write an article each month detailing my journey through chronic illness and my subsequent comeback. Here's the link to the newsletter. In the right column you'll see my name which is the link to the article. The first article starts in the summer of 1996.

Thanks for all of your support this year. Knowing that my BFL progress helps not only myself but others, makes it far easier to stay on on track - or get back on track - than simply going it alone...

try fitday.com to make certain you have your protein/carbs/fat in the right % range.
I'm 5'7 (started @ 151 lbs.) felt like I was taking in too much (I was around 1600 cal. also).....I didn't skip any of the 6 meals, I just cut the portions back "a little" and cut down on my carbs at the last 3 meals. Just doing that I cut out 200 cal. per day and have seens a big improvement.
I don't know what I would do if not for fitday.....or tracker....or guestbook.

Body for Life Forum Message by forest tech (4 posts) at 07:45 PM
Gymbeamin': yea I am a regular there. That is how i know how many cals i take in per day. I do find it helps.. but some nights my cravings are so bad that even seeing it on the screen doens't help.
I do like peanut butter (natural) when im craving at night. But i dont get that anymore because one tbsp would just get me hungier. So now i avoid it altogether.
Right now Im having one of those craving times.. but I haven't eaten anything else and wont. i am just putting it out of my mind and keeping busy.. then i will go to bed. that always helps. last night though i took Jennifer A's advice and had a raw carrot to curve a craving.. it wasn't sweet or "carby" but it still helped. I think what is helping me the most tonight is how good i remember feeling this morning after my kick a$$ UBWO!!!!!!! WOW that felt good.. Thanks for the replies everyone!!!

It's not going to be a free day for me. I'm just going to make myself a meal that fits in right from what I am making from my family.
Sundays always have to be free days for me because it would be so annoying to fit exercise in when we have church in the morning.
Also our church is having pie and cider after evening service on Sunday so I'd like to be sociable and have a piece of pie. One woman is making a sugar free one so I think I'll have a piece of that one.
To me a free day isn't necessarily always going to be a pig-out day because the way I have been eating on BFL makes me feel good. But it is a good day to take a break from it all.
Also - don't forget that you can put some Thanksgivin' stuff in your fridge for you free day and have that all for lunch and dinner that day - that's another thing I will be doing. YUM!

I'm trying to figure out a Mary Wadeized Thanksgiving.
Turkey is fine.
Mashed sweet taters will work for veggie.
Green Bean casserole with the low fat mushroom soup, and a smaller amount of fried onions unless I come up with a better idea.
Cranberry sauce made with splenda
Punkin Pie Cheesecake (using the EFL strawberry cheesecake recipe)
Reduce portion sizes as needed to accomidate the extra bits. 4 Myoplex shakes for the rest of the day to keep calorie load in check.
My big challenge will actually be the next day. Day after Turkey Day- Black Friday for 'Merican retailers. I have a 12 hour shift, crazy insane day.

I will be making it a free day, but will cut back on a few things just so I'm not tempted by leftovers. For example, since it will just be DH & I, I will get a pack of the Mrs. Smith Pumpkin Pie slices (2 per pack) instead of baking an entire pie. And since I've been eating a sweet potato every day with my lunch, I will not be making the Sweet Potato Casserole. I'm just looking forward to a big plate of stuffing :)

Can anyone make this clear for me as it's now freezing cold in Scotland and I'm just worried that I may have to give up the only hot drink I like!

AquaBan is a pill I have used before which you can get at any drugstore. These days I drink a cup of Sleepytime tea (Celestial Seasonings) before bed and I usually get rid of a lot of water, there must be some sort of herb in there that helps. I prefer the tea to a pill anyday.

You should drink no more than 8-10 glasses of water a day. Twenty glasses a day is an awful lot. People have actually died from drinking too much water. Their kidney become overwhelmed. Also you can throw off the fluid electrolyte balance in your body.
I would limit you water to no more than 10 glasses a day.
Anyways I am not trying to lecture you. i am just telling you what I know as a nurse and a massage therapist.
Good luck!

Anastasia,
Or you could think about the Nuva Ring. I can't take the pill because it makes me extremely sick to my stomach and I am uneasy with the new warnings about the patch (I take Celebrex, which comes with it's own problems), so I've switched back over the ring. I had some problems last year that I associated with the ring, but it turned out it was my rheumatoid arthritis causing the problems and not the ring.
You only have to switch it out once a month and it takes less than a minute. You can't feel it, nor can your partner. You don't have to take a pill once a day or stick a patch on once a week. It's the best method I've come across in a long time (I can't do the depo shot either due to extreme changes in my personality from it...LOL!).

It keeps all of our sytems moving and constantly keeping fresh clean water in and the dirty stuff out. Yea we can survive on the water in the other things we eat and drink but PURE water is best so I think thats why it is suggested that we drink a lot of water. I read some where that,"water is the fuel of body"

Sorry about the attitude. You raise good points and I absolutely value the good information you provide. I think I was a little too defensive.
So KEEP POSTING(smile)!

Jamie, I use Betagen 20 to 30 minutes before my workout, and I drink a protien shake directly after working out. Both of these really do help with recovery!

Jules,
As you are probably finding out and as I have found out since I started doing BFL, was that there are a LOT of people out there in the same boat. I don't want to say that most people get depression or have self-confidence issues, but when it really boils down to it, there are a LOT and I think the majority of folks you'll talk to. Depression is deep rooted in the women in my family (my sister, mother, and I have had serious depression for quite some time). We have learned more about it and how to better deal with it. For me personally, it comes on seasonally, sometimes according to the darkness of a room (light sensitive) and also what activities I am involved in. Eating junk food and sweets also makes me very depressed--it makes me feel terrible and the lowest of the low. Thank goodness I found BFL because the exercise and eating healthy completely takes that depression away for me. In addition, I also have to challenge myself extremely much more than the average person. I have to feel like I am working towards a goal, accomplishing something or like I must have something tangible (not money, but personal achievements) to show after a certain amount of time. BFL solves all of these things for me. There are new levels and opportunities available should you choose them. For instance, next year you can totally bet I am going to try rock climbing--TOTALLY foreign and impossible for me before, but I am going to do it!
Another completely different issue is the one of self-confidence. I have suffered with poor self-confidence my WHOLE life, only to find out that most women if you really pay attention are self-conscious in some way or another, too. We ARE all in the same boat, even those we perceive as being "perfect"--they are self-conscious, too, and have their inner battles ongoing as well. The bottom line is the #1 MOST important thing for anyone is their mental health, THEN the physical health part is an added bonus that comes from eating right and exercising smartly and in a knowledgeable way. Once again, BFL covers these, too--it's the ONLY program that emphasizes that BOTH are equally important and related to one another.
Since your issue is that you've undergone amazing success and personal achievement in getting in shape and losing weight, it's time to refocus on what's more important---YOU! The inner you, the YOU that really makes up who you are. The outside changes will help. Think of it as a wonderful fresh start, a chance to start totally anew. It's a brand new day and you've begun to reinvent yourself!! Tomorrow, wake up and be confident, one day at a time, you can do it! You're NOT the only one, but one of many who waste time every day being self-conscious. So, you're not weird, but actually normal! Because so many don't realize that they ARE part of a bigger group of similarly self-conscious people, they do not reach out more. So, now you know and you can let your inner light SHINE!!!!

I don't know you at all, or how real or deep your symptoms you say you have really are, but I must tell you--they are alarming. Everyone has suggested ways of adjusting your circumstances to help lift this cloud that envelops you, but I am not at all confident that this will work--since you really have already tried that through your transformation efforts. It certainly sounds to me like you need some professional help--and soon! There are excellent medications and counselors out there who can help get your life back for you. It may take some exceptional courage to go and arrange that, not to mention significant effort and money too, but it might just restore and save your life. Depression of the type you are describing RARELY goes away on its own, even with huge changes of circumstance.

Thank you Maegen and Mike for adding to this post. I really appreciate your concern and especially to Maegen, your background and personal journey, you're very brave to post it for all to see.
I think Maegen has a point when she talks about the darkness effecting her moods, because when I woke up today it was sunny, (but freezing), outside, and I started the day on a completely different foot. I have only really started feeling this way since the days have been getting shorter and the nights are getting darker earlier. I know my mum gets a little down too at this time of year, and it's also around this time of year when my dad passed away. So I can definately see a connection.
To Mike, I really appreciate your post and your overwhelming concern. Really, I think you're right in a lot of ways. This is as open as I have ever been in front of people. I am incredibly private usually, and tend not to talk about myself at all, especially to those close to me. I hate to harp on about the British stereotype, but there really is a stiff-upper-lip attitude in this country, and it's part of my character and probably always will be. Asking for help kind of puts a dent in your pride, and it's frowned upon over here. Don't get me wrong, I think professional help and medication is definately an option, but I don't think it's my only one. I opened up to my boyfriend at 6am this morning....He still had bed hair and a tooth brush hanging out of the side of his mouth, and I even showed him this forum. He was quite alarmed at my outburst because it is so out of charcter for me to be so open and exposed emotionally, and although he had sensed I was feeling down lately, he didn't realise how bad it was. The strange thing was, I felt a little bit better after I'd said it, and we're going to have a serious talk tonight. I'm not sure a councilor is right for me yet, but I know in the future I will need to seek that path. It might not be right for me, but it is definately something I need to explore. I've just felt like the only goals I've completed lately have been weight loss goals, and that I've just totally engulfed myself in this physical transformation.
At work I spoke to my editor today and told him that I didn't feel as though I'd progressed in journalsim since leaving university last year. He told me that I should be prepared for big changes next year because a new magazine is going to be launched, and a few people have spoken to him about my work. I think he could see that I was feeling stuck in a rut, and I don't think he was meant to have said anything, but it really did put a spring in my step. I know what I want in life, but I'm very impatient, waiting for things to happen when you work so hard to get them brings me down. Maybe 2006 will be my time to shine.
Thanks again guys,
Jules x

Am I pideon toed?
Is it me or is my butt jiggling all over the place?
Is that a creeper I feel?
How can I get that out with out her seeing?
Should I just leave it?
Can she see me making faces in the mirror?
Then I hit my 3rd set and right at about 8 I wiped my nose on my shirt and said to heck with it, and pushed with all I had. lol
Never did get that darn creeper...

Urs, your funny. I feel the same sometimes at the gym. I feel when I'm doing curls people are looking at my wide butt.
I finally gave up and don't care what they think but must admitt I do cardio at home cuze I look horrible. For my 10 I end up with the dry heaves. I wouldn't want people to freak at the gym if I get it. Also I wear a sweat band around my head. I sweat alot. LOL.

I am here, aliveeee!
Ok, i went to see the endocrinologyst.
He mentioned 3 points to me:
1. Reduce carbs.
2. Avoid foods from the Complex carbohydrate intolerance list (yep, i got this stuff too)
3. Avoid dairy, because he found out i was lactose intolerant too.
He gave me some prescription drugs for the water retention (he did the test and saw that i was horribly bloated, and it wasnt safe keep me like that). Its a diuretic. God, i have taken just the 1st pill yesterday (i should take 3 per day), and i already lost 6 lbs!!!!! Of just water!!!! I am still bloated, quite very bloated. But hey, i am down in weight.
He is afraid i will need often those pills, its not really like a diuretic, but its anticelulite too. The kind of painful cellulite like i got.
Anyway...i feel better now...i start have MY FACE!
He said i have a disorder in potassium-sodium interchange in body.
Gosh, here goes my list of diseases:
High blood pressure (genetic), Insuline resistance (chronic), hypoglicemia, hypothyroidism, PCOS, CCI, Na-Ka interchange disorder, lactose intolerance, did i forget something??? mmmm
Anyway...since small i had all of these problems, except that now i get treated for them. But...i am fine...NO PANICK. But i guess the day i will read my own genetic code, i will see a hell of mess there. LOL
Well...i havent been on track for 1 week, i wont lie! I didnt eat :-( I walked a lot but....i couldnt eat...i wasnt hungry at all...i was just soooo sad.
I will start Karate!!!! Yep! I hope this will be the sport i fall in love with. When i was small...i just didnt stop watch karate movies or anime. Dragon ball z was my fav. I just jumped and kicked all the day. But my parents never encouraged me to have an athletic career in that field. :-(
So...i guess this are one of my dreams. My brother is 5th degree black belt and sensei (master teacher). He did compete for 10 years, then he left the competition world to prepare other competitors. 22 years experience. You will say: wow! then your brother will prepare you.
OH NO! HE LIVES IN FRANCE, AND I LIVE IN SPAIN, SO...NO WAY FOR HIM TO TEACH ME.
But its fine, i will learn it, and when it comes the day, i will challenge him!!!!
My other sister is brown belt(in karate), my nephew is 7 and orange belt in judo. My other sister...is green belt in tae kwon do.
I think that my other nephew(of 6 years) is now yellow belt in karate, and my niece (of 6) will start (or have started...i think she is just white belt)
My family are martial artists!!!!
So...i will join the legacy too. :-)
Well...thats all for me. I just have to modify a little the BFL diet...and i will be on track, normally now...with those anti-extracelular-water pills, i should see the results in inches when i lose weight. And appearance.
My face mas like strech because of the water retention. Now i feel FRESH. Like lighter.
Ok, thats all with me. I am baaaaack!!!!!

Let's just say that I didn't exactly, well I didn't find your pic very easy on the eyes. Oh, no! I don't know what to do...I'm in my third week, and have been very consistent with my workouts. Last week, though, I had a free day that went waaaay overboard, and then yesterday I not only missed a workout, but my eating went so badly, I had to declare it a free day! And tonight I have to go out for dinner with a friend, which is when I always find it challenging to eat cleanly. I can feel myself slipping! And this is only week 3 for me. I need help!!! Anybody out there ever have this feeling? What can I do?
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (911 posts) at 09:46 AM
Just concentrate on moving forward. So what, you had a couple of extra free days.
THAT's OK! At least, it's no reason to stop following BFL!
Remember, this is BODY for LIFE. So, we'll have those days.
Just get back on that wagon and strap down that safety belt! And go for it!
Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (880 posts) at 09:46 AM
not so much anymore......last weekend I had "2" free days (I was on vacation...what can I say).
you can do nothing about what's already happened.....you can only control what you do today.
just "get back on that horse"
Body for Life Forum Message by TracyJeffries (1230 posts) at 09:50 AM
Fill your mind with visions that will inspire you to get back on track. Look at your before photo and know that if you keep falling into temptation it will only take you farther away from your dream body.
Remember you can be consistent with your workouts, but you have to have the proper fuel.
Just think of how powerful it will feel to say no to the garbage.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

Hey!!!! its okay! I went through the same thing early in my challenge. The mind set thing is Hard to grasp at first. Dont Beat yourself up! thats the wrong thing to do because then you find yourself slipping even further. Just at the beginning of each day make yourself a promise and try to stick to it. If I said that I followed to a "T" durring my whole challenge I would be Lying. It took a few weeks for me to get in the groove of things. Eating out isnt bad Just use the same method, Protein Veggi, and carb. Go for grilled insted of fried and go heavy with the veggies! cut back on the Bread at resturants," that is hard for me!" But you keep at it Do your work outs and eat as clean as possible. its not about what we do some of the time but if we do it right "most" of the time then those slip ups wont matter as much. You can do it! I did!
KEEP ON PUNCHIN!!!!!!
chachi
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (27 posts) at 10:02 AM
Don't give up! don't let one slip pile onto another so that you feel you are not on track. Imagine you are on train tracks. You can't fall off of them. You are going to stay on these tracks for 12 weeks. If there are bumps along the road...so be it. Each day is a new day and moves you forward whether it was perfect or not.
Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (42 posts) at 10:05 AM
The question isn't how often you fall, but how often you get back up. If you miss a workout, work hard to eat extra clean that day. If you mess up on your eating, then make sure to give your all on a workout.
Progress is the key here, not perfection. Don't stop and say, "this isn't going to be a perfect challenge, I need to restart."
Life isn't perfet. :) Learn from what caused the slip (poor planning, stress eating). There's going to be a reason. Find that reason, correct it, and keep going.
You can do this.

It IS TRUE that you can't do anything about what you've done, but it's also true that you OUGHT TO do something about what you are going to do this evening--that dinner with a friend. Keep your promise to yourself by eating right. You say you "have trouble" with those times. If that is the case, maybe you shouldn't go, or at least you should plan in advance what you're going to do--because even though all your friends here on this thread are willing to excuse you--you are unlikely to excuse yourself if you break your promise to yourself again. Break enough of them, and you lose your ability to even start over, let alone keep going. Promises mean something--so get and stay strong or you'll be setting yourself up for disaster.

I'm reminded of a story.
Guy is walking along one day and falls into a deep well. He tries and tries, but just can't get out.
He starts to call for help.
His friend hears the cries, and jumps down into the well.
The guy looks at him and says, "what did you do that for? Now we are both trapped down here."
His friend says, "yeah, but I've been here before and know the way out."
Jump into the well and help someone out today.

Put up the small banner for Julie as your profile picture. It worked.

If you Xanga - consider posting a small pic of Julie!

Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve my flexability and posture?
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (103 posts) at 12:31 PM
Pilates!
I've been practacing it for over a year, but have recently really, really got into it. It makes you stand taller and "cures" any stiffness and aches. I love it, and can't recommend it enough.
I started a 10 week challenge where-by I did it every day which ended on October 31st, and I lost a total of 14" and nearly two jean sizes! Now that I've started BFL I am continuing with pilates, so can you imagine the results I'm gonna get in 12 weeks?
It's also great for tonning. I use winsor pilates. The best place to get the videos is ebay in my opion, because they're lots cheaper.
Hope this helps,
Jules x
Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (131 posts) at 12:34 PM
Thanks Jules, I'll try that. One question, do you still lift weights and do cardio as well?
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (103 posts) at 12:41 PM
Yes.
I do pilates in the morning before breakfast. I can't get down to the gym before work you see, because I have a really early start. It only takes 45 minutes maximum, and isn't high intensity so it stretches you out, wakes you up, but doesn't wear you out. I've found it very easy to incorperate into my schedual, but you might just want to do it every cardio day and maybe your free day at first, and then if you want to, build it up to every day. You'll still see a huge difference by doing it 3-4 times a week.
Hope this helps,
Jules x

I think flexibility can be regained ( to a point ) like anything else. You have to work at it.

I have been looking through quite a number of profiles and have noticed that 80% of the people disappear by the 4th week, what is wrong with people? And some of the people who post for the whole twelve weeks end up losing only 2% body fat! Does this mean that this only works for 5% of the people that try? I have read the book and you should be able to lose near 3lbs of fat a week. Is it that these people really don't stick with the plan?
Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (880 posts) at 01:11 PM
it doens't mean the program only works for 5% of the people.
it appears to me that it only works for the people who work the program 100%....for the full 12 weeks.
there are a good many people that start the program and just don't understand that the progress/changes/improvements do not show up overnite.
my favorite saying:
we didn't get outta shape overnight, it took time, and we're not going to get back into shape overnight, it's going to take time......you have to put in the time to get the results.
Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (110 posts) at 01:19 PM
I think by the four week mark, many have realized that a transformation really takes WORK, and they are unwilling to put in the time, effort and sacrifice it takes to make this a lifestyle change. Also, they may have not seen physical results fast enough, so they just gave up. BTW, I only lost eight pounds (scale weight) in the my first challenge, but that equalled three sizes smaller in clothing. I did not see any change on the scale until after week 6. Muscles make all the difference.
Body for Life Forum Message by Miss Fit (303 posts) at 01:30 PM
I’ve actually been a little worried that people might be disappointed – or discouraged – if looking at my profile. I work my booty off at the gym, follow the eating plan spot on, drink a gallon of water a day and although I’m not perfect everyday, feel like I’m giving it 110%. However, I’m disappointed in my slow progress. I have hypothyroidism and can’t expect the same results in 12 weeks that some others achieve – especially until my thyroid is optimized via medication (which it is not). However, I refuse to give up. I refuse to slack off. I’m not quitting until I attain my best body ever. It might take me years (Lord I hope not), but even if it does, I’ll stick with it because I know this program is working and I’m building lots of muscle, I sleep like a baby, and I enjoy challenging myself.
Also, everyone is different. If you stick to this program, and give it everything you’ve got, you will make the transformation. Also, keep in mind that this program promises results in as little as 12 weeks, but it’s called Body-for-LIFE for a reason – you gotta keep going after you’re 12 weeks are up.
Here are some profiles of longtime “Lifers” that may inspire you (they’ve certainly inspired me).
Woman1069
Cindy'sExcited2bFit
Get*Her*Done
Jshelton
Tai-Kee
gbfan
Bflmom2004
DanaD
…just to name a few.
But then again, there are LOTS and LOTS of people on this board that make amazing transformations is only 12 weeks.

You raise a couple of questions that I have Miss Fit. How does hypthyroidism slow down your metabolism so much? I always thought that if you consume 2000 calories and burn 2000 there is no net gain or loss. Yet how does a human burn so few calories? Do I have it all wrong?
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (317 posts) at 01:54 PM
Just because one does not post on the tracker does not mean one no longer participates in BFL.
Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (880 posts) at 02:10 PM
true.
but, can you imagine trying to REALLY stay with the program and not using the site to atleast track your progress.
How easy it would be to slip back to your old habits.
I don't know about you guys, but for me it makes all the difference in the world.
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (317 posts) at 03:24 PM
I keep track in my journal. A binder that I created. I'm sure other people have different means as well.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1839 posts) at 03:28 PM
As to Miss Fit's list there are many many more with exceptional results that have moved away from this board for various reasons. I joined last January when there were several "senior" members at that time and there was a "different atmosphere" here on tracker - I'm hoping it will go back to that and those members will come back - I myself miss some of them.
As far as achieving results, some people take longer to achieve their goals than others. Many factors can be involved - genetics, diet cheat days, whatever. Myself, I had expected to receive the results I have after 10 months in the first challenge. That did not happen. Am I disappointed? I guess but I know it works so have resigned to the fact that I have to really really work & stay focused - its not a 12 week thing for me. If I was to stop completely I'd probably be back to square 1 in a month.
It is discouraging when you're impatient (believe me I know), you may be like some people who just take longer than others; we're all different. If you stick with it, don't give up it will work!
*********************************************
I just looked at your profile. You wanting to loose 2 - 3% bodyfat is going to be a bit more difficult to do quickly as opposed to someone who is 35%. But on the other hand, being male is going to work more in your favour than being female especially when your almost at you're bodyfat goal. Are you looking to put on a significant amount of muscle or just loose the bodyfat? Move your weights & eat properly, you shouldn't have a problem.
Body for Life Forum Message by She Bear (4 posts) at 03:30 PM
Everyone is different. BFL is a rollercoaster of emotions. Your really need to hang on! Week 4 & week 7 are low times. I'm finishing up week 7 and am excited to see what happens the next few weeks. I don't expect to look like a goddess, face it I was HORRIBLY out of shape when I started. My body needs more time but it is changing!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by deadyote1 (3 posts) at 03:35 PM
One thing I found and this will also vary is that my Blood Pressure dropped and my Cholesterol dropped. So for me, even if I had gained weight, I would be on cloud nine. I ended up losing 20lbs on C1, but the scale (the liar it is) stated I only lost 2% to 3% BF. I'm 6ft and 200lbs with a lean mass over 180. going from 220 to 198... Hey the scale is wrong!! And even if it's right... every body who said "Wow you look great" never asked "What's your BF% anyway?"

still lurking around tracker when I have time just don't have much time to post and even though I quit posting pic's and results, still working out still trying to eat right still down to a size 6 from a 10 or 12 and below 130 lbs. So it works...even though pepole come and go on tracker doesn't mean they quit the program
Body for Life Forum Message by Spec V Me (4 posts) at 05:08 PM
Flower- I just started the Body for Life Challenge last week but I have been doing something like it for a while. I was about 25% six months ago and 17% about 5 weeks ago when I got serious. I guess my point is, I have stuck to the diet and excercise with no cheat days and just a few cheat meals and I am very happy with my results. My wife has just begun and she is about 27% and would like to get down to 14%. I don't want her to go through the rigorous excercise if the results aren't going to be there. Granted, I want to see her excercise,
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1839 posts) at 05:50 PM
Spec - if that isn't AMAZING results then I don't know what is! Do your 12 week challenge til the end, following the guidelines, (same with your wife)and we'll see how happy you are then - good luck.

Just because people don't keep tracking their 12 weeks on here doesn't mean they're not doing BFL as well... some people just don't keep up with their profile after a while :) I'd wager some are sticking to it and not coming to this site and some have given up... as for results, everyone is different... some people like me can lose almost a pound a day on BFL :) i've already lost over 6% bodyfat and not even close to done with this challenge...

Is BFL Too Much Work?
If you read Julie Whitt’s blog entry for today, 11/17/2005 -- click here -- you find that she’s often asked, "Is there another way?" Isn't BFL too much work?
Take a moment to find out what she says.
You may also want to sign her guestbook and put your picture on the Frappr map. A couple of states could use a pushpin or two. It’s all at: LungsforJulieWhitt.Com
Those of you with blogs or forums or websites may want to consider placing a banner on your site. They are available at the website. A lot of people already have and it helps a great deal. There's even a link on the Hussman Fitness Site. It will help spread the word throughout the whole www.world and be a big help.
Tracker is a great bunch of encouraging and supportive people. Thanks for all you’ve done for her. So, as Julie once said, get out there and, "Get your freak on!"
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. -- Margaret Mead

I drink decaffinated tea throughout the day and was just wondering if this could count towards my liquid intake? As far as I know it is the caffine in drinks that helps to dehydrate our bodies.
Can anyone make this clear for me as it's now freezing cold in Scotland and I'm just worried that I may have to give up the only hot drink I like!
Thanks! Yx Brrrr!

Focus on body fat percentages and pay attention to how your clothes feel. There is no way exercising and eating well will not bring the results you want. Give it time and do not quit. You can do it!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by She Bear (4 posts) at 07:50 PM
I fall into the same trap. My body is just concentrating of building mucsle it so sorely needs to hold up my skeleton. The fat will go when it is time. I know I have done nothing wrong so all must be right.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetThing (7 posts) at 08:03 PM
I have always lost fat very slowly, but gained muscle rather quickly, so the scale is slow to change. I've only lost 2.5 pounds in two weeks of really hard work. But I've also noticed a lot of small, positive changes in my body in those 2 weeks. You're probably noticing those same good changes, and that's why you feel you should have lost more weight. Don't feel bad. I'm going through it, too! Keep it up!
Body for Life Forum Message by Rkreider (61 posts) at 09:08 PM
Thanks this is the reason why I hate the scale. Because it really does not mean much when your weight training. I couldn't help myself getting disapointed at what I saw today because these two weeks I have really worked hard. I'm going to stick it out till the end.

I have 25lbs less fat on my body this year compared to last year and let me tell you I am freezing all the time. It was only 25F in Cincy today and it was torture going outside. I am literally in 2 pairs of socks, 2 shirts and an ugly flannel robe to keep warm at home. Plus, my husband has put us on a "money diet" (thanks to Dave Ramsey) he's so paranoid we are going to get a $500 heating bill, he set the thermostat at 69F. This is going to be a long cold winter!!!

Do you count calories or use portion size?
I started counting calories. Everything I read suggested I eat 1,250 calories a day to lose 1 pound a week. Does that seem a bit low to you?
I tried using portion sizes during my first challenge. I found I was eating either too much, or too litte.
TIA - Jamie
Body for Life Forum Message by Webmaster (284 posts) at 07:10 PM
Yea that seems low, especially for someone doing BFL. Try 1500-1600 if you're doing BFL workouts, you may even need more, but 1500-1600 is a good place to start.
Did you try the Calculator on this website? It can give you calorie suggestions as well.

Wonderful to hear your news.
So...has she changed her mind about getting rid of the horses?
Body for Life Forum Message by GET*HER*DONE (2577 posts) at 08:38 PM
no, she said the horses go, except "BO" which I said I bet she would do, but not because she wants him, her husbands sister wants him and Stacey said Bo can stay until she finds a place to keep him, she said today,
" I almost died, I got to the back door and in the house and could hardley see to find the phone, called 911, then Dirk at work, I passed out on the sofa after that, if I would have passed out before I got to the phone I would have died there. I don't want to ride again or see another horse. It's not worth it!"
This did shock us knowing how she loved her horses, but being a nurse practicner she knows and fully understands what happened to her liver and how bad off it still is.
They say 6 months before she can even go fishing or ride in the boat again. and they got her off the mediciation so quickly because the liver can't filter out medication by it's self for a long time til it heals and even then it will be scared.
So yes, she is better, and out of the woods and at home, but it's still a long road to complete recovery, so I can understand about the horses.
thanks again everybody,
Love Linda

Also remember that part of BFL is about learning to make decisions.
You can make a decision to partake of holiday yummies. Just make the decision not to demolish the whole bloody buffet table. ;)
I saw an excellent suggestion in Men's Health. Eat a Granny Smith apple before going to a dinner event. It will take care of the carb craving, which helps you avoid food overload.

Hopefully this isn't a stupid question. When we do the 20 cardio workout is only list reaching 10 once. I have been following to a T going 5 5 6 7 8 9 6 7 8 9 6 7 8 9 6 7 8 9 10 5. So the question is - Do I follow this the same everytime I do cardio? Or do I try to do 20 mins at 10? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks so much. Having this community has really made my transition to using BFL so much easier. I am in my 2nd week day 10th day. I fell great. Thanks Lisa in MD

Follow this every time you do HIIT - you won't be able to sustain a level 10 for 20 minutes, because that's supposed to be your top, all-out effort.
Your levels 5-10 will constantly be changing (increasing in intensity) as you become more fit so it's possible that your current level 10 will one day be your level 5. =)
Hope this helps. All the best to you, Rachel

He's a former wrestler, he knows what he's doing as far as cutting/gaining weight. I bet he wins the whole thing!!!

I knew a wrestler in college at the U. of Iowa who said they used to do crazy things with their diets before meets. They would also spit into a cup for an entire day to help dehydrate themselves before weigh in.
I have a feeling Matt will win too, BuckeyeBoy.
