Carole, I made these last night and I just had one with my breakfast and they are yummy, so much better than the ones from the store. We are going out of town tomorrow and I wanted to have some with me so I don't have a cookie accident. Thanks for the recipe, I'll make these again!! Have a great holiday! Monica

i used to blame others for my overeating as well. An average of 3 out 5 days of the week my work place could be mistaken for Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Today the boss gave each of us 5 snicker bars, last week 3 co-workers brought in krispy kremes and we had a bday party, it never ends and is a constant temtpation for someone like me who struggles with obesity. i finally came to my senses and realized that I can only change myself. You will always have temptations, but you can also always walk proud when you avoid it and stick with what you know is best for you.

not gonna stress it. I'm going to enjoy Thanksgiving with my family (Grandmother's for lunch.....and I live in Georgia, TALK ABOUT GOOD SOUTHERN COOKING) Then Thanksgiving night at my house; Fried Turkey (yes, I said FRIED), stuffing, green beans and APPLE PIE. FREE DAY.....FREE DAY I've just decided that rather than stress over it, I'll enjoy it and I'm going to make this into a "13 week, 91 day" challenge rather than a "12 week, 84 day" challenge AND this is the week of the level 12 on stairmaster for cardio. I hope each and everyone of you have THE BEST WEEK, enjoy the holiday and hit those 10's

Wow! Sounds yummy! We are going to my in-law's house and so therefore I'm also making Thanksgiving day my FREE DAY! Too much good stuff there. Have a great holiday! Crystal

I'm with you gymbeamin', no extra stress is needed on that day. My husband wants to know if he can drive over to your house Thurs. night for fried turkey? That's what he wants, but I won't let him make it. Remember the Allstate commercial?? I'm baking the turkey, but he's getting all the other favorites along with pumpkin and pecan pies, so don't anyone feel the least bit sorry for him! Ahhhh, grandma's house. I miss those days and those smells. Great memories. Thanks for reminding me:)

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (987 posts) at 08:34 AM:
good lord woman, let him come... Dallas isn't that far he must love fried turkey if he's willing to from Dallas to Griffin

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (124 posts) at 08:48 AM:
He loves anything fried and complains all the time because I won't make it. He has adapted a little too well to the food here in GA. I'm sure he would make the 70 mile trip to get some fried turkey and get out of helping clean up the mess at our house. Like he helps clean up anyway! More like lie on the couch and moan while watching football. LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (987 posts) at 08:51 AM:
damn, sounds like we're married to the same man 70 miles isn't too bad.....I thought it was farther than that

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (987 posts) at 09:12 AM:
hey wendy, which direction is Dallas from Atlanta?

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (124 posts) at 09:18 AM:
We are about 40 miles northwest of the Atlanta, actually closer to Alabama than Atlanta. We are just west of Marietta, about 10 miles. Paulding County is the further west metro county at this point.

Have you heard of the BIG CHICKEN? I can get there in about 20 minutes, not that I ever go there! LOL Really I'm not a KFC fan at all....see earlier post regarding fried food:) OH, and then there's the Varsity.....oh my. Talk about a food hangover.

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (987 posts) at 09:27 AM:
oh yeah, I know about the Big Chicken I'm not a fan of KFC (I was the office mgr. for the local chain in the early to mid 90's). YEP.....FREE FOOD and weight gain. The Varsity is just gross (good gross, but still gross). Love their chili dogs, right? The last time we went to a GA Tech game we stopped there for lunch (this was about 2 weeks after I started BFL.....FREE DAY)

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (124 posts) at 09:36 AM:
good gross???? hmmmm not sure. Yes, I've had the chili dogs, but it's been years thank goodness. My husband's first year in law enforcement was in downtown Atlanta on night shift. Yeah, lots of fun he says. He spent a lot of time at the Varsity eating and working wrecks. One guy road a bike through one of the Varsity's windows, drunk of course. I like the Varsity employees better than the food. They crack me up yelling at each other in the kitchen. You better know what you want before you step up to that counter.

Promax bars are high in carbs, but that's why they taste so good :)

Body for Life Forum Message by benhamtroll (82 posts) at 12:38 PM:
I really like the GNC ProCrunch bars, especially the Chocolate Crunch. If you get a GNC gold card and pick them up at the beginning of the month, you can get them cheap. Don't buy into the marketing hype that EAS has thrown up around BFL. What it boils down to is a healthier way of living, not a diet, and not eating the right bars at the right times. The bars are for convenience sake only.

Body for Life Forum Message by rainy (30 posts) at 12:46 PM:
I like to mix it up when I use bars. Otherwise I just get bored. Most bars have 4-5grams of fat though, so be careful. I try to only eat 2 bars a week, because meal-replacement drinks have less fat, and are also convienient. The new atkin bars are actually pretty nutritious- lots of fiber (7-11g), which I find to be lacking in BFL bars, and about 20 g protein, 20 g carb. Also Greens+ bars (which you can find at Vitamin Shoppe, as well as online) are good. They have 4 grams of fiber, a bit low on protein (12g) and essential fatty acids (omega-3s). Met-Rx Big 100s have 2 g fiber, and lots of protein, but are kind of high in fat in sugar and fat. They're comparable to the EAS Delux bars. Good for packing on muscle. Hope that gives you some idea. ~ Jenn

When I need a bar that won't melt for our summer motorcycle rides, I will order Tri-O-Plex chocolate chip cookie dough bars from vitaglo.com I will split them into two meals, but my husband gets a whole one. They are very natural with no fake protein and/or chemicals, and lots of oats. My normal emergency bar is an EAS Carb Control cookies and cream. I will usually eat it with a small apple.

Well I wasn't so much worried about being hit on by gay men, but at the time I was having a hard time with getting dates with girls (shy, stupid words coming out of my mouth, etc) and to realize that the entire gay community wasn't interested either because of how I dressed...well I really just...yeah...uh thanks...I think lol.

WOMANS PRAYER Before I lay me down to sleep, I pray for a man who's not a creep, One who's handsome, smart and strong, One who loves to listen long, One who thinks before he speaks, One who'll call, not wait for weeks. I pray he's gainfully employed, when I spend his cash, won't be annoyed. Pulls out my chair and opens my door, Massages my back and begs to do more. Oh! Send me a man who'll make love to my mind, Knows what to answer to "how big is my behind?" I pray that this man will love me to no end, and always be my very best friend. Amen. MANS PRAYER I pray for a deaf-mute, large-breasted nymphomaniac who owns a liquor store, a golf course, and a bass boat. This doesn't rhyme and I don't care. Amen.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mickymacb (310 posts) at 09:32 PM: New coworker advice
Today a new coworker started in our office. She is really nice and seems like she will do a great job. The problem is that she is always making "off" comments about her weight. She IS overweight, and I can tell by her comments that she probably just has really low self-esteem, but how do you respond to someone so negative about themselves? At one point, she told me she was just "meant" to be fat, and I told her I thought that once too, and told her about BFL. She just went back to commenting on how big she is. Any ideas for ways to gracefully change the subject or respond to comments like these? I would HAPPILY just avoid the subject of weight all together, but since two of the four of us in the office are on BFL, we talk about it several times a day. (after each of us gets back from the gym, after eating, etc) TIA! Micky

Body for Life Forum Message by Ready426 (1 posts) at 02:13 PM: Calorie Counting
Is it necessary to count calories (or attempt to) while eating the BFL food? I am using the EFL cookbook but wanted to monitor my caloric intake as well- just to see how much I am eating and burning on a daily basis. Does anyone know how many calories are in some of the recipies? I was hoping to eat a maximum of 1500 calories a day just to boost my weight loss and fat burning process. Thanks in advance for the tips.... I need all the motivation and help I can find.

Ok I have been following WeightWatchers for some time. I did a test week for BFL last week and started my first official day today. My question is should I stop counting points entirely and just focus on clean eating and portion size? Im sort of freaking and scared I'll overeat. Im just not sure....thoughts?

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (35 posts) at 08:25 PM:
This is actually easier than Weight Watchers because you don't have to count up points. Did you read the book? Bill makes eating very simple. It might be hard not to notice and count as you are going through your day because you are used to it. Unlike Weight Watchers, everything is not approved. Fat is practically non-existent on this plan. And things like ice cream (skinny cows) etc. just don't have a place in this plan, except on your free day. If you watch your portion sizes, you will not over eat. Enjoy!

"Fat is practically non-existent on this plan" This is not true. You need fat to live and it should be around 20% of your daily calories. Just make sure its good fat (not ice cream or milk)

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (128 posts) at 06:41 PM: Lower back exercises...
Hi gang! Just finished my second week of BFL! Horray! Time really passes by on this challenge. Just a quick question though, because I've just completed my UBWO today, and was wondering whether the back exercises will tone the lower back as well as the upper back? I read a few weeks ago that the lower back benifits from the LBWO, but would like to know a bit more, because it is an area I would specifically like to target. Thanks guys! -Jules x

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (52 posts) at 07:13 PM:
Well, somewhat. BUT, the exercises that really help a low back are things like deadlifts, squats, raises on a roman chair, using a back machine specifically for the low back. The low back muscles are stabilizers that really work about any time you are trying to stabilize your core, your trunk, but to make them stronger or make them grow, they really need to be doing the lifting. ANother good exercise for the low back is lying on your stomach, and raising arms and legs and holding that for as long as possible, several sets.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (128 posts) at 07:20 PM:
Thanks Mike! :) I do pilates which has really helps tone my back, but I really want to strengthen it. My aunty has been using a wheelchair a lot recently, due to severe arthritis in her pelvis, hips and lower spine, and she's only 53! I really want to avoid any health risks in the future, and so want to build up the muscles that so often get neglected when we workout. I'm doing the "swimming" exercise you suggested, as well as the squats and deadlifts. Very curious about the Roman chair though..... Sounds like an impliment of torture but I'll have a crack at it! ;) Cheers ears! Jules x

making the decision to do BFL was easy....eating right is what is tough for me. Thanks for the perspective Jim. Oh Robin, this is an awesome post, I just found it. I know I am my worst enemy. I'm short, no matter what size I am when I look in the mirror I see a fat person. I told my husband the other day, that I sure am starting to look "old". He told me I was nuts, I think most women have that distorted body image thing. I think society has alot to with that.

Thank you for this post, and let's bump it up just in case someone else did not see it. Take care.

Awesome post, Robin! Soo true, and a good reminder to a lot of people. I see a lot of people saying the worst things about themselves, and it really does make me sad. Plus, I think about how it effects others on the board. When I started here, I was astonished to see people who are teeny tiny referring to themselves as "whales" and "fat" and thinking, GOSH! What would that make ME, when I'm at least 4 sizes bigger than HER? Thankfully I didn't take any of it to heart!! Thank you again for the awesome post, I'm sure you made a lot of people feel better about themselves! Micky

Thanks for the replies. I did this program two years ago and dropped 60 pounds. I know how to work it, I know it can work...I'm just not seeing it now. I gained it all back plus some. I've been going 6 weeks and only dropped 10 and nothing fits differently, my inches have barely budged. I'm frustrated because I'm working 3x harder at this challenge and seeing 1/3rd the results. I dont physically feel better and mentally I'm not improving as much as I have always *until this past week* had total confidence in this program. As far as "not getting help" is I'm alone where I live, so physically I have no one to do this with. And as far as this mentally...this site was great support and inspiration, I used to post all the time and until this one...I got nothing for responses. One person actually personally messaged me and said "you're too negative, you should go somewhere else." I dont know why it takes a total breakdown for people to offer a little help... I dunno. Im angry at myself and the program and I cant seem to harness my anger positively. I suppose this was a mental brain fart. I just didnt' think anyone was listening anymore...

Larry, Little has been said about it because Steve Yu and I were planning things behind the scenes and we told everyone we would let them know when we were ready to give them info.

Since this is going for Julie Im not going to make a big issue out of it but the considerate and professional thing for you to do would have been to consult the one with the idea (Me and Steve since he was helping) to inquire about the status!!!

Keep Pump'n

GetNFit,

Steve Yu and I traded emails on Oct. 29th and I sent him the Wonder Woman photos I had of Julie on Nov. 4th. He told me he was assisting on a calendar idea and some other things, and would advise when things get moving.

It sounds as if their project is a bit more ambitious than this one and I heard there was an 18 month calendar "in the works." But quite honestly, we hadn't heard anything about it since. I consulted with some other BFL & EAS people before I made the post yesterday. There did not seem to be any objections.

And you are correct -- this is about Julie -- there is no other agenda.

It's a sort of "grass roots" Tracker movement. Think of it as a large group collaboration, an experiment of sorts. Who even knows if it will work? The success of this project depends upon the involvement of Tracker people (primary the submissions of photos).

I bet there's room for both calendars out there, even more! So let's help Julie. If I have offended you, or Steve, I apologize, but I'll be among the first to order your calendar.

I assure you our only thought was that of helping Julie in the short time that remains before the new year.

Yours in fitness, Larry

I think those types of plans can be good when used as a jumpstart but I wouldn't plan on sticking with it for the long haul or you might burn out. Perhaps when you're hitting a plateau, it might be a good boost. So why not add it in? I don't suppose it could hurt. :)

Hey, I relate, totally relate. The phrase it is not how many times you fall it is how many times you pick yourself back up is not just a cliche, it is words to live by. Do just that- pick yourself up and keep going. Don't make yourself wrong for falling, make yourself right for getting back in the game. This is for life, so it matters what you do most of the time, and if that is icking yourself back up, great! You can do it. Be honest, look at WHY these things happen, then prevent them from happening again. You can do this.

Thread: Even a bad challenge is better than no challenge… (68 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1608 posts) at 02:30 AM: Even a bad challenge is better than no challenge…
Hi gang! I’m in week 10 of my fourth challenge and I gotta tell ya’ there aren’t any stunning results to brag about. In fact, I’m several pounds up from my weight at the end of C3 ! That is partly due to ‘celebrating’ dropping over 100 lbs. during 9 straight months of BFL. There was a trip to Texas that made it hard to stay on track and I’ve been sick for over 5 weeks of this challenge. Add to that my decision to have a few drinks with family and friends and the odds were not much in favor of me transforming into the next Arnold Schwarzenegger anytime soon! With such disappointing progress, it would have been pretty easy to just say “screw it!” and look forward to starting a new challenge in January… Especially the last few days with this bug that just doesn’t want to go away. With the cold symptoms and shall we say excessive seismic activity in the bowel region I haven’t been riding my bike much or putting significant energy into preparing my meals (can you say ‘Subway’!) But today I asked myself just what did I achieve during this past 9 weeks. Anything? Well, between frequent trips to the bathroom, or should I say Porta-Potti , since I’m camping, I decided that this challenge still had some value…that I had made important progress overcoming obstacles that had to be addressed for me to ultimately achieve my fitness and weight goals… and maintain them for life. There were 2 key things that had to be removed from my life for me to achieve ultimate success in my BFL program: toxic friends and alcohol. It was hard to separate from friends who were like family for 17 years but at the beginning of this challenge I decided to no longer be friends with people who were disrespectful and trying to drag me down. And I knew from past experience that with alcohol in my life, I might have some success at weight loss and building my fitness, but that there was no room for it if I was truly committed to getting into the best shape of my life – and I am! My minor setback provided the added clarity and conviction I need to stay the course in the future. It made me realize that I enjoy life the most when I stay on track with my BFL program. So as I sit here in my tent trailer late at night at Lake Jennings campground, I’m feeling jazzed about my challenge after all. My plan is to make the most of the remaining 3 weeks by getting back in the gym and back on the bike as soon as I feel better… I sure would have liked to have made more progress physically, but I’m glad I didn’t just throw in the towel and decide to quit this challenge. Without the structure and accountability of a BFL challenge, those aforementioned obstacles would likely still be waiting for me after the holidays - ready to ambush my next challenge… Not exactly the way I want to start my new year or my new life… Jim

To me, I dont look any different now than I did two years ago. I'm still over 300 pounds, Im lucky if I eat clean three days in a row. Its true what they say about before pictures..it really gives you the truth about where you are.

Ok yes, I tried to look a little pitiful on purpose, but even if I flexed and held my stomach in it wouldnt of hidden the truth. Some kind of knee jerk reaction would be to add cardio, skip free days or meals and so on, when what I really need to do is start stringing together an impressive amount of clean days before I can even think about taking other measures. If you still dont beleive nutrition is 80% of your transformation, take a look at my pictures....that goey, fat body is after TEN challenges..yes..10.

I can use all the support I can get right now. I hope I hear from you.

Body for Life Forum Message by Miss Fit (313 posts) at 05:35 AM:
I haven't looked at your profile photos yet, but just wanted to respond and give you my support. You CAN have a dramatic transformation. You just have to decide you're going to do what you already know you need to do - NO MATTER WHAT. You have to focus and maybe even get a little obsessed about it. It's not easy at first, but the more days of eating clean under your belt, the easier it becomes to make the decisions about food you know are right for you - without even thinking about it.

You have to believe in yourself, too. Believe you can eat clean, plan ahead, get obsessed. You're pretty obsessed with the Tigers - right? Take the same focus, dedication and obsession you have for your favorite team and apply it to your BFL challenge. Stay strong. Don't make excuses - make it happen. YOU CAN DO THIS.

All my best,
Rachel

I don't often encourage anger, but sometimes we need to get good and pissed at ourselves to finally get through to our heads. You have to say, there is no feeling sorry for myself. No going back on the promise I made to myself. Just determination, a focus on a goal that you want so damn bad, you won't let anything get in your way. Today is Monday. Promise yourself that you are going to eat clean until your freeday (I would hope that's on Thanksgiving) Then stick to it no matter what. Keep that promise to yourself, because... Drum roll paaaalease! YOU DESERVE IT! You deserve to be happy, healthy, and confident in yourself. Then after your next freeday, make that same promise again. Please always remember that you are worth it, and you deserve it. Big Hugs, now get your butt motivated, for today is going to be a great day! Ursula

Tigermuscle, I admit I am a food addict. I eat everything in sight and I can not stop. I often hide food and eat in when no one else can see me. How pitiful. I did BFL last year and lost 55+ pounds in 3 challenges. THEN I FELL OFF THE WAGON!!!! I gained 25 pounds back over the summer (am really pissed off at my self)and am back to BFL. I now know that I need the routine and discipline of BFL to manage my eating disorder. If I do not do it, I will continue to overeat. This program is hard initally but as you continue, you will find that you do have control of your eating and you will feel better. Wow, I never thought that I would be this honest on this forum because of embarassment of my eating disorder but I feel better talking about it. So, I want that feeling I had before when I lost all that weight....I want to control my eating, not my eating (or overeating) controlling me. Good luck, Annette

I've told Gary this already but I have been a closet eater for years now. My husband doesn't know but I would actually tell him I was going to the gym and then go to McDonald's. I'd eat a burger, fries & coke in the car and then worry that I'd drop a french fry or the car would smell like grease. One day I said "enough of this" and decide it HAD TO STOP! This is all about how bad you want it. If you REALLY want this, you won't let anything, including your wife, stop you. You have to make the commitment that this is a change in habits, for good, not just for 12 weeks. Take baby steps and work on eating clean for 6 days in a row. Once you've been clean for a while, chances are, those cravings will subside. I agree that it is time to get obsessed!!! :) Someone ( was it Cheryl?) posted an idea that has worked for many when they have cravings: when you feel like you just HAVE to eat a specific something, take it, put it in a ziploc bag and put it in the freezer. On your free day, take out all of your junk and decide if you really still want it. Chances are, just looking at it will change your mind. Try it for a week and see if it works. And remember you can e-mail any of us when you need a little nudge. YOU CAN DO THIS GARY!!! You have to have faith in yourself and in us to help you get through it. Keep us posted! Hugs, Jen

In addition to writing your challenge goals, keep a daily list of behaviors you want to change & check them off as you do... Ask yourself everday "How will I make this (CHALLENGE/DAY/WORKOUT) different? Remember this challenge isn't just about losing...it is also about gaining a new you... Denise YOU CAN DO IT!

Gary - Firstly, know that you are not the only one who is disappointed by their results after multiple challenges. I am personally disappointed that I am not in the shape I have pictured as my goal yet. The awful truth is that if we are not COMPLETELY committed to the plan, it will not yield results. It is so simple, yet so difficult to do at times. Nutrition is the most difficult part for me. I also try to make excuses by drawing others into it; my husband went out and bought junk so I blame him for my eating it??? What is with us? It IS about making that decision and sticking with it NO MATTER WHAT. I find if I let myself cheat "every once in a while", then every once in a while gets to be more often. Finally I realize that I am only getting in a few good clean days of eating per week. And no matter how much effort you put into your workouts, if you don't have the eating component under control, you will NOT get results. GOALS....I find that I do much better if I have defined goals and stick with them. That is why challenges are good for me. I am also better at being accountable to other people - more so than just myself. If I could just hold myself accountable to myself, well I guess that would be my crossing of the abyss. Have I done it yet...no, sorry to say I have not. But have I given up trying? HELL NO. I am setting my head straight and going to work around or get rid of the obstacles that are standing between me and my goal. I know you can do it, too. Set your goals, Gary, know that you are a valued person and you should treat yourself as such. Don't let yourself down by not doing Challenge 11 100%. YOU CAN DO IT! I have faith in you!!! Nancy

I am married to a man who can basically eat whatever he wants and not gain weight. He is obviously blessed with a great metabolism. He will sit in front of me and eat an entire bag of potatoe chips and drink beer knowing full well that I am struggling to lose weight. So what I wanted to say is: Do this for YOU! You decide what to eat, for YOURSELF. I am really sorry that your wife is not more supportive of you. I know how that feels. But in the long run, my friend, you will be successful in the next 12 weeks because you choose to be. And we are all here for you. So good luck, be strong, don't try to go crazy with skipping free days or adding workouts. Just be consistent and keep trying to do your best for yourself - one day at a time.

He needs you to be there for his first broken heart. He needs you to be there the day his son is born, so his dad can tell him it's okay to cry tears of joy. He needs you to show him what it means to be a champion. Nobody, your wife, family, friends, BFL buddies, or the president of the United States is more important than him. You are worth of this transformation Gary. You are a worthwhile person, and your son loves you unconditionally. He believes you can do anything in the world. Tiger, as Ursula said, commit to eating clean until your free day. Maybe the idea of clean eating 12 weeks (much less the rest of your life) seems overwhelming. I found that (for me) initially when I promised to just eat clean until my free day, it was easier. After my first free day, I didn't feel all that great. The next week my free day was a free meal. Again, after eating clean all week, then having that "unauthorized food", I felt bad. I think you will find, that the longer you eat clean, the less you will want the forbidden fruit, because you will feel great. Although that "free day" is still an authorized option. You can do it. Maybe you need to take baby steps at first. I know my weaknesses. I can't have anything tempting in the house. It just won't work. Does your wife REALLY know how you feel about this? Ask her to help you, tell her how bad you want this. Any time you feel weak, come here, there will be plenty of support. As for boys (and I'm sure girls for that matter), Blemt's got it right. I have two wonderful boys, ages 17 and 14. Their father is and means the world to them, unfortunately he is not here. This summer, I want us to be at the pool and for all of their friends to say "dude, is THAT your mom?" I want them to be proud of me, and that is more important to me than any snickers bar.(of course not to mention the health benefits) You have the power to change.........baby steps.....and as my oldest, 17 year old, varsity swim team member and strongest supporter, with 5.6% body fat tells me... IT FEELS GOOD WHEN YOU DO IT RIGHT! Hang in there. Rhonda

I just finished the book "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey. For those of you who watch Oprah, it is her most recent book club selection. Anyway, it is about the author's time in rehab for drug/alcohol addictions. Now, I know food addiction is not as deadly as drugs, but in reading the book, I can see the nature of addictions are extremely powerful...no matter what the addiction happens to be. It takes great dedication to defeat them. I think everyone should read this book.

I also got in my water EVERY day. I've been filling up a jug in the fridge to a line I marked to be 10 cups. I make sure I drink everything in it by dinner time and I don't include in the total any hot tea or protein shakes I drink. Anything after dinner is extra fluids which can only be better. Although I'm running to the bathroom every 25 minutes. My students are always asking me where I'm going!

I have been off of my challenge for 2 weeks with a bad sprained ankle. Should I just continue on or start a new challenge? I have my own little challenge going on right now too for the holidays which ends in less than 2 weeks. I'm trying to get back into a pair of jeans that I want to wear for one of the parties we are going to. So, what should I do? I'm using Thanksgiving day as a free day, but will most likely workout when I get home that evening. My only problem is, even though I love doing lunges (great exercise) I still can't do them because of lack of range of motion in my ankle still. Any suggestions on what I should do? I haven't really done so great on this challenge anyway with trying to move (packing, moving and unpacking). Thanks. Crystal

I get in only 1 upperbody workout a week, I just make it count....takes me about an hour and 15 minutes to complete it.

I hate that I can't jog/run in place, I can't jump/jump rope or jumping jacks and can't even ride my bike right now. It's just not my month right now...lol. I do have a good legs and back routine where I combine upper and lower body. It makes for an awesome workout. Take care and have a great holiday week. Don't eat too much and don't stress. Just enjoy it. Crystal

I need to get everyone's new and improved weight for this week and your points by this evening!

I have to admit, however, I had a less than stellar week, I just lost my motivation for a few days in the middle . . . I'm amazed that I even lost the 1/2 lb that I did.  But I'm on for this week (Free day Thursday, of course), no more screwing around. I've got goals damn it and being lax just isn't gonna get me there!

The plan for me today is to try and make the baby hike today  . . . try because I need to call the Peditrician here in a few minutes when they open cause Megan's having some issues with milk products . . . she's underweight already . . . Dad's genes, not mine! . . . and she's not eating very much . . . so I we may go in to the office and miss the hike .  . . . .. . . but I will be doing, for sure, Spinning class tonight.

In addition, I'm going to be all over my water today and food is only EFL.

I need to make up the additional 1/2 I should have last at least lost last week and get this weeks pound too.  I'd hoped to be hooping it up that I was into double digit loss total this week, but I just sabotaged myself for some reason, unclear to me yet.

I hope you're all doing well and kicking butt!!!

Laurie

Hi Team - I had a pretty good week - though I think I am going to have to give up alcohol. I have been using my free day for social occasions and it really messes me up for 1-2 days afterwords. I feel awful and it is a struggle to eat clean. Laurie - I hope your daughter is feeling better - it is hard when they aren't feeling well. This week will be better and a 1/2 pound is a 1/2 pound! Much better than a gain! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Debbie

Thread: Creatine loading... anyone do it? (125 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 09:20 AM: Creatine loading... anyone do it?
My husband insists that if I’m using Betagen, I need to go through a loading phase or it is just a waste of money as the creatine won't work. He says that your ATP stores have to be topped off with a loading phase and then you can just take the recommended daily dose. I took the regular dose and by the third day, I felt like I had swallowed a cow I was so bloated. I know that it will go away when I stop but I’m worried about my progress pictures every two weeks. I feel enormous!

Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (6 posts) at 09:30 AM:
I don't know about Betagen but Cell-Tech is a creatine formula that has a loading phase of 5 days. It should tell you in the instructons if loading is needed.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (69 posts) at 09:45 AM:
I read that you don't have to "load" that they tell you that to sell more product, and honestly I started to take Betagen and could feel myself gain weight and get way bloated so becareful on taking too much. I am only taking it once now in the morning after my workout and I feel MUCH better....So I say don't load

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (951 posts) at 10:15 AM:
what's loading? I take Betagen, jsut started with it again this morning. I don't get the bloated thing too bad, but I do notice that when I quit taking it then I usually drop about 3-5 pounds. As long as I know it comes off I don't worry about it. Lori

Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (35 posts) at 10:18 AM:
So does the Betagen help build muscle then?? When you go off it and loose is it muscle you loose? I am not sure what the point of gaining only to loose it is?? Can someone explain please. Also do you take Betagen before or after your workout? Thanks.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (69 posts) at 10:41 AM:
Someone on the supplements forum said for those considering betagen or creatine to read this article: http://www.skwigg.com/id53.html It really is worth reading!

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 10:44 AM:
The reason I decided to take Betagen wasn't for the creatine for for the HMB and L-glutamine. I have been getting incredibly sore after my workouts, to the point where I have to work out again and my muscles are still killing me. Supposedly glutamine helps with muscle recovery and spares muscle when trying to lose body fat. The creatine causes you to store water in your muscles and unfortunately under your skin as well. So-to answer lovetorun's question, I believe that when you go off of Betagen, the weight you lose is the water weight that you were storing while your creatine stores were high.

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 10:45 AM:
I've been adding Betagen to my post-workout protein shake although I'm not so sure that's the best way to take it. I'm new at this and still doing research and trial and error. I'll keep you posted on what I find out.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (69 posts) at 10:47 AM:
That is why I started taking the Cytovol, because it is specifically for muscle soreness and recovery WITHOUT the creatine!

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 10:55 AM:
Someone introduced me to Endurox yesterday as well. I may toss the Betagen. Please tell me more about Cytovol. You really like it?

Body for Life Forum Message by TC (46 posts) at 10:58 AM:
If you're a female, don't bother with loading. The muscle you gain with betagen will not dissapear after you stop using it, the incresed "pump" you get while using it will go away a bit, but the muscles will stay. Loading is only to help saturate the muscles faster.

Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (35 posts) at 12:08 PM:
Thanks for the info!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (69 posts) at 01:36 PM:
Biojen - hey Cytovol is another of EAS's products that has the Glutamine and other vitamins in it to help with muscle soreness and recovery. Gives you all the benefit of Betagen without the creatine. It taste pretty good. They recommend that you take it before and/or after workout. I take it at night before I go to bed and after my morning workout and I am not getting bloated anymore...thank God. It really helps with my recovery time too because I am working out intensely and get VERY VERY sore, now I am fully recovered by the time I have to work the muscle group again

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 01:56 PM:
Thanks Mellie! Too bad I have an entire container of the Betagen sitting here. It's not cheap! :(

Thread: Can I be putting on muscle too fast? (239 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 10:06 AM: Can I be putting on muscle too fast?
I am at Week 3, Day 4 of my first challenge. I see an unbelievable difference from my week 0 photos (even great changes since my week 2 photos taken last Friday). I'm wondering if I can possibly be putting muscle on too quickly. I don't want to be too muscular at the end of the 12 weeks. Should I even worry about that? Cheryl Muhr says to workout like my life depends on it and I do- I grunt and pant and push myself through my UBWO and LBWO and can barely move those muscle groups the few days following. I love the solid feeling I'm getting in my muscles but I'm worried about bulking up too much. Do you think that when the body fat comes off at the end, my muscle size will even matter? Thanks in advance for any advice or support!

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (172 posts) at 10:08 AM:
Jen it is nearly impossible for women to get bulky. They lack the testosterone needed for it. Yes resistance training is the only way to re-shape your body, but also think of it as a fat burning process too! Don't worry about it, and enjoy the feeling in your muscles! :) Gary

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (124 posts) at 10:10 AM:
One word, NO! Muscle burns fat. Keep those muscles coming. Your female muscles will not be bulky or big! They will increase in density and strength. You will love the end result! I can't wait to see your pictures.

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (73 posts) at 10:17 AM:
Honestly, I would't worry about it, I'd be jumping for joy!! The truth of the matter is women bulking up "too much" muscle, is a myth. The fact that women have estrogen in their systems, keeps us from having the muscle bulking ability of men. That is because you build muscles of that size in the presence of testosterone. Just remeber-the more muscle you do have, the better the fat burning results will be.

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 10:53 AM:
True, true. I know you're right- thanks. I guess I just wanted a little reassurance. One of my students today said "wow, miss- you're getting buff!" That was the best feeling in the world! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by averismommy (197 posts) at 11:03 AM:
You look AMAZING! I also don't put on muscle mass as fast as I would like, so color me GREEN. As you lean out more and more, you won't be big and bulky....you'll be toned and ripped. I think you are one to watch.....I can't believe the change in your first two pics. You are doing EVERYTHING right!!

I just checked your profile - holy cow!!!! How did you loose so much weight in 2 weeks??? I can understand water, but the change is so visible. Actually what were you eating BEFORE starting BFL? That is such a significant change in 2 weeks; I'd like to be able to pull that off!!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (38 posts) at 01:54 PM:
Basically before BFL, I was a carb addict and basically ate whatever. I actually only ate a few times a day, probably less calories than now but I NEVER drank water. My water intake consisted of a pot of coffee in the morning (with cream which was killing me) and maybe a soda or two in the evening. I think that's making a huge difference. Here I am in week 3 and I'm fitting into clothes I haven't worn in three years! I walked into class today and my students said "Wow, miss! You are really taking this challenge seriously!" I can't believe they are noticing already- this is all happening so fast, I'm just ecstatic at how I look and feel! I can't wait to see what is in store in the future. I'll post my week three pics on Friday. Perhaps knowing I have them the day after Thanksgiving will keep me from going crazy on my free day. :)

Aw, now I'm blushing :P Talk about motivation... there's no way I could quit now! Thanks so much. You are all so generous with your compliments. I have been hitting my abs pretty hard. I can't wait for the fat to slide off to see what's under there! They have definitely gotten really strong over the past week. I've been doing weighted crunches using one side of the pulleys on the cable crossovers. I put maybe 130 pounds on there (if it's less than your body weight, there isn't anything to pull you back up after you crunch down), get down on my knees holding the bar behind my head, and crunch the weight to the floor. It's hard to describe but someone showed me and I just love it!! Maybe I can get someone to take a picture of it and I'll post it so you can see what I'm talking about. It feels like it's working but time will tell when I'm finally able to see what's hiding under there.

I thought it would be nice to know who all is on team 3. We are suppose to be here to support one another. I would like to know a bit about all of you and your goals. I'll start. I'm 27, live in Colorado love to snowboard and love animals. My main goal is to tone up and feel great by the new year, how about you? So far gymbeamin' is the only person I've been in contact with, and although she's great the more friends the merrier.

I'm here! I am new to the team as of last week! I am 35 and I completed the challenge back in 2002 and in the past 3 years put all of my weight back on. So, I am doin' it again and lovin' it! My goal is to get to 135 lbs. and 18-16% bodyfat. I LOVE Colorado and boyfriend and I go there often. We have lots of friends there too. We recently went and climbed up Mt. Sneffels in Ouray...that was awesome! SO I love to be outdoors and hiking mountains. I have 3 kids, a son who will be 18 in January if he is lucky, and twin 6 year old girls! I LOVE sports - FOOTBALL, go Cowboys (hate the Broncos....can we still be friends???? LOL) So that is me in a nutshell! I am glad to met ya...whats your name? I am Melissa!

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (73 posts) at 11:30 AM:
hi melissa, my name is Hayke ("HIKA") I just did Mt sneffles in Sept. Aren't the blue lakes sooo beautiful???Me my father and fiance did a long loop from Morrison where I live to Crested butte into Delta, down to Montrose, into Ridgeway, through Ouray and into Pagosa Springs and up into Wolf Creek and then back home. It took 4 days and we hit up 5 different hot springs. It was great, the fall colors went off this year. We can definetly be friends, I hate the broncos too. I'm a raiders fan. Except when it comes to hockey, GO AV's!!!I absolutley hate the Stars and the Red Wings. So I see you live in NM, I've always wanted to go there, I've heard parts of it are really beautiful. Sweet, I'm glad to know we're on the same team. Now I can start sending you some mail :) It helps to have someone keeping my ass in check!!!

I just joined up last week as well. I am 33 and am a high school biology teacher in Tucson, Arizona. This is my first EAS challenge and I am on week 3, day 4. Doing great so far! I lost 8 pounds the first two weeks of the challenge but I've put on a pound this week. I just know it's muscle gain as I feel much thinner and my muscles are feeling stronger by the day. I have a daughter who will be three in February and between her and my growing internet business (I have an online store where I do custom favors & invitations), I stay pretty busy. Of course now that I have found BFL, that is playing a HUGE role in my life as well. You can see what I do on my planning period! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (73 posts) at 11:54 AM:
Welcome biojen!! I too gained a pound, but lost 2% body fat. Scales are evil!! You have made so much progress, you look great. I admire that you teach H.S that can't be easy, especially w/ everything else you seem to juggle. This is my first challenge in 5 yrs. I will be getting married this April on the beach, and that is the driving force that keeps me going. I plan on living BFL forever, I'm convinced it is the most sensible and effective way to be healthy. It has been a huge mood lifter for me as well. Any how, feel free to IM me any tasty recipes or ideas you may have, and I will do the same. Have a great day--Hayke

WOO-HOO! I feel the success already! Can you believe I've gotten 3 family members to join me in BFL this past week? And the week of Thanksgiving too! Our whole family has basically agreed to let me make substitutes for all of the traditional (traditionally tasty but fattening) Thanksgiving foods so that we can start a healthier future together! Talk about something to be thankful for. :) Now you can see what I do on my lunch hour too! I'm addicted- but for once in my life it isn't to sugar! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (73 posts) at 12:54 PM:
That's awesome that you're getting so much support from the family. I know that feeling of being addicted to sugar...bad news! What great moral support to have everyone do this with you. I don't get discouraged, but the only REAL support I have comes from tracker. My man is supportive but his attitude is "whatever, I love you how you are now" which is sweet, but not motivating.

Ok, yes it is Monday, but it's been a great Monday. I love all of the compliments from all of you on this forum, but it means a lot more from somebody that has no idea that you're doing body for life. So I was doing my upper body workout this afternoon and some random guy (not completely random since I see him a couple times a month at the gym) but he says to me "you're really looking buff". How's that for a compliment. It made my day. Not only that, but I also think that I'm finally starting to be able to see my abs (the lower ones that used to be covered by the spare tire!). And finally, I have to wear a tie to work and I do my workouts over my lunch break. So I was gettign dressed to go back to work and I almost needed somebody to help me get my tie back on. Now that's a great workout. Maybe Thanksgiving week won't be so bad after all! Happy Monday to me and all of you too.
