Thread: 5 meals a day (130 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by kana (323 posts) at 08:02 AM:
I eat 5 meals, normally, with about 3 hours in between each. With my schedule...5 is usually all I can fit in. If I am hungry...and can get 6, then I will. I am in Challenge 3, and from the beginning, I think ...maybe, I've had 6 meals a day for a total of 5 days.

Howdy!

Im looking for some suggestions. For those of you who arent doing the basic UB/LB split as per BFL, what current splits are you doing? I was doing a chest/shoulders/triceps/abs, back/biceps/calves, legs/abs split..but I'm looking to change it up. I was contemplating:

chest/back/triceps/biceps
shoulders/legs/abs

what do you think? I know this is more of a detailed question, but Id appriciate any feedback.

Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (67 posts) at 08:31 AM:
Are you looking at a 3 day split or a 4 day split?

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (201 posts) at 08:38 AM:
I was doing a three day split, with the fourth being a repeat of the first workout of that week. what I would like to do is increase the amount of weight day so I could hit both workouts twice a week.

How about: Day 1: chest/triceps/back Day 2: shoulders/biceps Day 3: quads/hamstrings/calves Then do abs every other day with whatever workout. You can do it whatever way gives you the best workout. Lori

Ok another question:

How many of you are writing out for the entire week:

your meals and goals.

How does this help you if you're doing it this way?

Tiger, I'm goofy I suppose, I write mine out in the morning before work, for each meal up to but not including supper. After Supper I write in what I ate. I just can't plan it out any sooner.

Body for Life Forum Message by AngRoCamp (96 posts) at 12:58 PM:
Gary I use the Success Journal and plan each day's meals and goals the night before. I do however plan my dinner meals a week at a time just to help with my grocery shopping and to eliminate the frustration of "What's for dinner mom?" I think if I tried to do meal or goal planning for the whole week at once I wouldn't be able to cater things as I need to. I fine tune daily, so a weekly plan would be hard to follow and probably not as effective as planning daily is for me. ~Ang

I've been using a journal for 7 months. I write what I've eaten each day, and the exercise I've completed, but I mainly use it to express how I'm feeling mentally. If I have lost some motivation, I can look back on the weeks I have felt low, and see what I did to pick myself back up. It's really been the key to my success, and I know that when I reach my ultimate goal I'll always keep a diary to make sure I don't slide backwards.

DodgeGirl and I plan out our weekly meals every Sunday for the coming week. From Breakfast thru Dinner and all the snacks in between... The cool thing is we make sure my kids get in on the healthy eating too. Get them trained up so when they get older they know what its like to make healthy choices.

Wow that was a lot of tweaking.. especially for fat loss.. I want maximum fatloss and dont really want bulky muscle.. but it sounds like inorder to do that I'd have to do about 40 mins of cardio like 5 days a week..

Uhg.. that is exactly why i wanted to get away from on this program to avoid wasting my life doign large amounts mindless cardio!

please someone to got relatively cut from the "normal" program tell me it works as is if you follow it exactly...

I would rather not have to worry about tweaking the program and then wonder if i did too much, not enough, etc etc

Uhg.. i hate this, it is now my free day and i half feel guilty that i should go do moderate cardio.. but it's my FREE day!

I did 4 weeks before I started my official 12 weeks the first challenge I did. I don't see anything wrong. The before and after pictures of every champion since the first group is 12 weeks. Some folks just did more work to get to their start point. :) I'd say easy 60% of the last several groups of champions have used BFL as it is in book.

Thread: on the verge of an affair (926 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (38 posts) at 05:55 PM:
Wow. I don't think anyone can really advise you about your marriage based on a couple of paragraphs about your relationship. Your feelings about your marriage, your husband and your family are very personal. And there are so many different factors to weigh in determining whether or not you would be happier in your marriage or out on your own. But this is one thing that I do know. You owe it to your partner to be honest about whether or not you are in it or not. Since you went through the marriage ceremony, he probably feels that he can safely assume that there is a covenant between you two. If you are feeling like you cannot or don't want to continue with the exclusivity, then you have to tell him. Before you begin something with someone else, you need to make a decision IN THE OPEN. Come out and tell him and the world, that you are no longer committed to this monogomous relationship. Cheating is a cowardly way of testing the waters without alerting your partner that the commitment is over. It just isn't fair. I'm not saying you shouldn't be on your own. It might be the best thing for you. But you need to take a big step and separate first. No one likes to do this because it is public. Everyone realizes your marriage is shaky. But it is honest. And I have found that sometimes you realize how tied you are to someone when you separate and can evaluate your place in each other's lives. It can be the best thing. It allows you to truly focus on your marriage. I'm guessing you don't feel ready to make a bold move and statement like separtion. You might even worry that it would hurt your husband. If you can't do that...don't get involved with someone else. You will do more harm to your husband if you lie and cheat than if you tell him you need to try a separation. Good luck.

You say you "just don't know what to do about it"...I think you do, the same way we all know what to do when faced with any kind of temptation. Chocolate and compliments and acting upon them are all instant gratification. You are making a transformation with your physique and you can transform your marriage, make him the man of your dreams. You are taking the physique you have to make the most of it, apply these principles in all areas of your life. Inside that man is a person, whether 15 or 55 pounds overweight. How would you feel if you had that weight back on your body, meanwhile he got in shape and had an affair with another woman? You have the courage to share this challenge, one many married couples have. Now be brave and create a fabulous marriage. I took an awesome relationship course, if you want more information please PM me.

I am actually sick of this thread, so I decided to post in it. yeah, backwards thinking, I know. I think cheating on your spouse would be the biggest insult to the BFL program. This program is not about bettering yourself so that you can stomp other people down that are "overweight" or "less fit" than you. Stop being such a self centered brat and deal with your marriage. Don't be so concerned about what he is NOT doing that you can't focus on yourself. Let him be his own person. Meet him where he is and love him. Love him to the program. Show him how wonderful you are doing on the program and how wonderful life can be without the bag of chips in front of the TV. If he doesn't come around....find something else wonderful to love about him and focus on it. Marriage is about a 100% commitment....from both sides. You cannot focus on what the other half is not doing. You have to give 100% of yourself at all times, no matter what the other half is doing. Show them love, don't beat them into it. Cheating on your spouse is a cowards way out. If you want to be unhappy and untrustworthy....follow the advice Young Guns. I am sure this will solve all the problems that you are having that brought you to this decision in the first place. Someone made a comment about not judging....this is not a judgement. It is my opinion...which I believe is what you are looking for....our opinions. Take it for what it is worth to you. I personally don't believe this was posted with the truest intent at heart anyway. Teresa

First, let me say that I am so appreciative of the time that each of you took to reply to this thread, and to PM me as well. I can't tell you what a difference it has made to me. I also wanted to give everyone an update - - I talked to my husband. I didn't tell him that I was disappointed in his lack of effort to be fit because I don't think that's really what my issue is. But I did tell him that I was getting a lot of attention, and I was really starting to enjoy it. I told him that it has nothing to do with him, and I don't blame him for not paying the same attention to me, but I did now question what it said about ME. He was sad that I so obviously like the attention of other men, but truly, TRULY is an amazing man and husband, and I really do feel lucky to have him as mine. He just asked, "Do you still want to be with me?" Being faced with the question made me very sad, scared, and disappointed in myself. It took me all of a second to say, "Absolutely!" I apologized for doubting us, and I truly will try to focus on what's important, knowing that it's not about him sitting on the couch with a bag of chips in his hands, or about the other guy, but it's about him always being supportive of me, even when it doesn't make sense to either of us. I am so thankful for his UNCONDITIONAL love, and I only hope that I can be as loving of him. He deserves it. I don't want to live my life with regrets, and I KNOW that if I allow myself to go there with another man, I would regret that. I really am a loving and devoted wife, but I human too. For those who have voiced their disgust, I suspect you've never been given the opportunity for an affair, and you find it very easy to judge from that seat on the sidelines. I hope you and all those around you always live-up to those ideals so that your world and your glass walls don't come crashing down around you. And for those who PM'd me with similar stories, kind words, and support, I really do appreciate it.

wow I can so totally relate to all you guys are saying. Mine is 13 almost 14 as well and let me tell you when he was one I didn't think he'd see 2 as I thought I'd choke him!!When they are lying in bed at night asleep and you are totally exhausted you walk in and look at those little angel faces and the guilt sets in that you could ever have had those thoughts about your own child but let me tell you it's normal!!! There are more spirited and challenging children in the world than we know about. Look into some support groups and courses on raising spirited, challenging or whatever word they use now adays that my parents used to call brats!!! I took one called raising your challenging child when he was two and it was one of the best things I ever did. The first question they ask you when you sit down is "Who's problem is it?" That was a real eye opener for me as the power struggles were huge!! With a two yr old? Who's problem is it? Mine most of the time. The old A good mother should do ____ and should_____ you can should yourself to death. My favourite response I learned in this group when well meaning people would tell my I should do so and so was I'm sorry you feel that way but this is what works for us. That usually kept them quiet. He will grow out of it to a certain degree. I used to say to mine that he was the light of my life but was going to be the death of me as they are the most loving giving caring kids one minute but the most mean spirited, selfish children in the next breath!! Anywho take heart that you are not the only one out there which helped me a lot in the early years and do find a support group at your local child development center that will help you vent and cope and give you all sorts of strategies and guidance as if you start early it will make the school years less painfull. Take care keep your chin up and know your are doing a wonderful job and he was given to you for a reason.

Have you contacted Early Intervention through your school district yet? They will come to your home or daycare and a group of them (ST,OT, etc) will evaluate him. They will get him the help he needs....and get your the support you need! If you have any questions at all, please PM me. I am more than willing to help or at least shed a bit more light on things for you. ((HUGS)) Jess

Hi Susan, I have run two full marathons and the key is the training and determination. I am sure you have both! I have two boys 3 and 1. Run 3/4 times a week between 5/7 km this never changes. Once a week increase your mileage with long/slow runs. It doesn't matter how long it takes you to finish your long run as long as you do. I also trained running 10 min/walk 1 min. This is based on the running room program. www.runningroom.com You can email me if you have any specific questions:) Good Luck this can definitely be done. The second marathon I ran after my first son was born and I was 30 lbs heavier then I am today. Shannon

I live in Chapel Hill, NC...what can I say it's a college town with a lot of people near or around my age but as I've gotten older it's starting to lose it's appeal...especially after UNC won the NCAA Final Four last year and I nearly had to shoot my way back into my apartment. Why am I hear? I moved here after college in 1995 because it was full of incredible opportunities, I caught on in the computer industry and was one of the fortunate souls to not lose their job when the internet bubble burst. I don't mind it here we have the great NCAA basketball teams (UNC and DOOK), Pro Hockey and the Durham Bulls for sports and it's pretty decent weather all year around. I do however see myself in either Colorado or perhaps California in the next few years since I'm originally from the West and have just about had enough of the East :)

Seriously, it's sooooo depressing to go Christmas shopping in shorts and a tank top. Okay, so I don't wear the tank top -- which is why I'm on BFL! I wouldn't trade this paradise for anything, it is amazing. Everyday I feel so grateful to be alive in this amazing, beautiful paradise. I cannot afford to buy a house. The median price for a home here is $750,000 for an OK place. In OR, I could get a freaking mansion for that price. Pros and Cons...That's life.

I received a great job offer in Atlanta, picked up everything and moved not knowing a soul. That was 10 years ago. I now live in a western suburb of Atlanta and love it. Real estate in our area is booming and affordable, we have a pretty moderate climate, and there are beautiful rolling hills and trees everywhere. So I'm going on the BFL cruise in June. Great. Only problem is that cruises tend to be expensive, depending on what you like to do. I like to drink, and I like my casino. Not to mention the excursions, although I don't know if I'll do any or not. Anyway, here's my point (If I have one).. Yesterday I got the call that I won a 5 day Cruise on Carnival (My choice of ship & destination) for two. And although it has an 18 month window, it's only good in the fall, so basically, it HAS to be between Sept-Nov of 2006. So now, I'm apparently going on TWO cruises next year, and not sure how I'm gonna work that out... No, you can't have it, so don't ask ;) I'm glad I won it, but strangely, instead of being really excited, it's actually caused a bit of anxiety...

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1942 posts) at 10:13 AM:
I was surprised to find out the BFL cruise you had to pay for some things; I thought it was all inclusive. Do you have to pay for all food & drinks? What about the Carnival cruise? The gambling/excursions I can understand having to pay for but paying for food & drinks for the price of it would certainly deter me. Anyway, whats MY point?

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (159 posts) at 10:20 AM:

*sniff* I'm still getting used to the thought of leaving my babies behind for a week or more.. Like Wendy said, the food is included, but alcohol is not. Plus there's the $7-10/day top for the maid & waiter. Maybe I'll get someone to pay for all that stuff for me in lieu of a free boat ride... HMmMMMmMm.... Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (159 posts) at 02:18 PM: What Kind of TV should I get?
We seriously need a new TV. While we don't watch it that much, it would be nice not to watch a football game where the players all have coneheads and short legs. What's up with that anyway? We're looking to stay in the 42-46" range, and so far the Samsung DLP and ? brand LCD rear projection are the favorites of my husband. Anybody have any favorites that they absolutely love, or on the other hand, any that we should definitely stay away from?

What's your current Top Five? (Regardles of release date) and Why? 5. Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. As much as I don't like the style, (I don't do hip hop) there are enough redeeming parts to get my interest.. It's hard to go wrong when the lead singer of Blur & the artist from Tank Girl team up.. 4. Black Eyed Peas - Let's get Retarded Ok I like the un-PC version. I heard it in the movie "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle", which everyone should see, just not wen you're hungry. 3. Keane - Bend and Break How can you NOT like Keane?? 2. Sarah Sleane - Lucky Me Satellite at work plays it, and got me hooked. 1. Depeche Mode - Precious Probably the best song they've released since the 80's.

5. AC/DC "Whole Lotta Rosie", taken from the "If You Want Blood, You Got It" album. Live music never fails to get my blood pumping. 4. Jimi Hendrix "Freedom"-need I say more? 3. Stereophonics "Dapper Dan" Really messed up rock tune from my favourite band. 2. Kasabian "Club Foot" Totally addicted to their album at the moment. 1. Oasis "What's The Story Morning Glory", grinding guitars and memories from Main Road when I was 14. Classic!

Thread: Some help from the ladies about the ladies... (259 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by havlow (97 posts) at 03:16 PM: Some help from the ladies about the ladies...
Okay I need some help from you wonderful ladies of BFL. I'm not your typical pick up a girl at the bar, library, grocery store, etc kind of guy. All the women I've dated were people that I had a normal everday interaction with or were friends in a group so I had time to get to know them...never had to go out and meet them. Well today I was at the gym and I saw a girl that made my heart fall into my stomach, trip on the treadmill when I first say her(literally) perfect girl for me. The whole time I'm checking her out without trying to be sketchy and still do my workout. No rings on her left hand, she was at the gym, seemed to be in good shape and oddly enough was a blonde which is usually someone I don't go for. The whole time we kept meeting eyes in the mirror or turning around and seeing the other one staring back. It was freaking high schoolish. All of my friends who are girls have told me in the past NEVER to hit on a girl at the gym, but I have to say I want to break this rule because of...well...wow!! I need some advice ladies...I'm not good at the cold sales approach and I'm not sure I'm terribly attractive when I'm hot sweaty and panting all over her. I just want a way to get my foot in the door at the gym without seeming...well...like I'm trying to pick her up. Any suggestions? Jeremy

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1942 posts) at 03:31 PM:
I'd ignore you're "girlfriends" and hit on her. I'd skip the Joey Tribiani "heeeey, how YOU doing?" bit. I'd do a friendly approach and wing it from there. Try something unique, tried & true, not often used anymore "come here often?", or "whats a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" Kidding. Why not just try "hi my name is blah, blah" stick out your hand and wait for her to answer. You'll be able to tell in her face, smile, where to go from there. No games, no lines, just normal down to earth? Is there anything wrong with that?

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (526 posts) at 03:41 PM:
I'm with Flower, pay no attention to the rule! If you want to break the ice without seeming like your just another guy trying to hit on her, why not start by asking her about her workout routine? That is something you both obviously have in common! Then slide your name in for an introduction?

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (860 posts) at 04:10 PM:
Good ideas, people usually do not like to person who constantly talks about themselves, so asking questions certainly gets around that, and you'll be able to get an impression as to what she is like. I wouldn't rush things. Good luck to you, Yours in Health, Kerry

The first thing you have to remember is that you either sink or swim with your opening line!!!!

highly recommend delivering a line that will get her attention right off the bat.

How about..

"Hi. I know your curious so I came over to say, YES, this IS IN FACT what I look like after having sex".

OR

"Scuze me...are you done with the 125 pound dumbbells?"

OR

"Hi...I was wondering if you can spot me on the ab ball"

OR

"does this spandex make my ass look fat?"

OR

"WOW!! The gym is really doin' you some good!! You're not nearly as fat as you were a month ago!"

Good luck! I know you'll do well!

It's very simple just write your name and number on a piece of paper, wad it up and throw it at her head. ;) I am no help when it comes to being suave lol. I also have no patience for BS which is why I asked my husband out before he could ask me. I believe I said... So you wanna go out, so I can kick your ass at pool? :) Romantic I know. Just talk to her. Start with "hello" and just let it flow from there. Urs

Body for Life Forum Message by dreambig (52 posts) at 06:41 PM:
Hello- is often the hardest part. Maybe she is attracted to you and too afraid to approach you because she feels the man should pursue the woman. There are very handsome men at my gym and I say nothing to them for that reason. When the time is right, just say hello. Try to catch her when she looks like she needs someone to spot her.

Body for Life Forum Message by Evielee (63 posts) at 08:47 PM:
Ahhhh this is a hairy one! In my experience it's best just to say hello in passing and develop that way, the old 'Hey' and build from there. I had one guy tell me I had such nice legs it was a shame that I wore long shorts - GROSS, put me off! Who wants to know someone’s perving at you while you sweat. Another guy said 'Hi' in the weights room, asked if I was new and then said he'd like to take me out (I have a boyfriend and told him so) and then later on while I was on the tread mill he came over and handed me his number and a note in case I broke up with my BF - persistent! Where as there is a guy I speak with every once in a while, about training and if I was single I'd go out with him if he asked. That's because he isn't strange and we have developed a friendship, but in saying that, I wouldn't go there, as I'm very much taken! Did that help - not much sorry

Thread: The best time to workout? (77 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (7 posts) at 05:12 PM: The best time to workout?
I am concerned about the time of day I workout. I keep reading that it's best to workout early in the mornings. The problem is #1 I've never been a morning person #2 I have to be at work at 8 and traffic is terrible where I live. #3 If I don't work out after work then I go home and overeat. So my question is, will I still get the same results if I workout in the evenings vs. the mornings? I also have so much more energy in the evenings. I love the feeling of getting a good workout in after work, it releives so much stress from the day!

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (200 posts) at 05:17 PM:
I have to start work at 8am, so that rules out a morning workout. I do do pilates for 1/2 and hour when I get up at 5:30am, but that's all I can manage. I think most people will tell you that they exercise when it's most suitable for them. Just don't have a heavy meal before you workout. I workout at about 5pm, after a light protein snack and maybe an apple at 3pm. Like you, I like to workout after work, I go home to my boyfriend in a much better mood! LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (7 posts) at 05:22 PM:
Rock-chick. It sounds like we have a lot in common. :) I think you're right, instead of busting my butt to workout in the morning, I just need to workout when it's best for me. How long have you been in the challenge?

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (200 posts) at 05:38 PM:
Just finishing week 3 :) Don't plan things so that they stress you out. Like me today. I planned an UBWO, but I didn't say, "Right I have to get to the gym at 11am, leave a.s.a.p. and then go to my mum's for sunday lunch, and then come home and do my ab routine before a clean the house and sort out my electricity bill!" I was still in bed at 12pm today, so I just went with the flow and ended up doing my routine at 7pm! Don't plan too much, just know that you have to do your workout within that 24 hour gap.

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (7 posts) at 05:47 PM:
It's better to workout at 7pm than not workout at all, right? I noticed in your profile you want to be a professional rock climber? Do you currently climb? I have done it off and on for the past few years but I've never gotten serious about it. It's definately a great upper body work out.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (200 posts) at 06:07 PM:
My boyfriend is a Kiwi and a total extreme sports nut. He's a camera man and took up rock climbing when he was filming in South Africa. He kinda got me into it, and we'd both love to take a year off work in the next couple of years so we can go on a major globe trotting adventure holiday. I need to get a lot better and more experienced before that happens though. So it's part of my ambition to acheive a few much needed certificates. And yes, a 7pm workout is better than no workout.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (109 posts) at 06:09 PM:
As far as cardio goes, it is clearly superior if done early in the morning on an empty stomach. As far as resistance training, it is better in my experience to do it in the early evening. Core temperatures of the body are highest in the late afternoon, which means that you are stronger, more flexible, probably more alert, and certainly more nourished than in the morning, so an early evening weight training event is likely to be better than early morning. One risk though. More often than not the evening gets taken up by something else unless you make that appointment with yourself and protect it from all the invites to go drinking, or pick up the kids, or stop and shop or whatever. I have done workouts early evening for years now, and if you look at my profile I think you'll see that I am getting along reasonably well with that. I do work out at home, though, which helps some--except on Friday nights when my wife and I go for a "date" to the local YMCA and then eat at the shopping mall food court on the way home.

I workout in the morning because if I dont I know I will talk myself out of going later in the day. As long as you go, anytime is great. I would certainly not agree that "it is clearly superior if done early in the morning on an empty stomach" as Mike states. This is a highly debated subject and there is no clear answer. I tend to believe that doing cardio on an empty stomach first thing in the morning is a fast way to lose muscle along with fat. I did the fasted cardio thing for a while and I regret it now. I lost a fair amount of muscle that way and I wont do it again.

Are you pressing your stomach in too hard to execute the lift? I've found that relaxing the muscles in my abdomin slightly, (though I do breath into my core), really helps me get rid of that queasy feeling. Sipping water before and during the workout instead of gulping it down, will also ease the puke factor.

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (999 posts) at 06:37 PM:
Rock-Chick, it could be that I am laying on my stomach on that one. It is the one where you lay down and lift the weight with the back of your legs. That one always gets me. Ew! Sorry, but why would you want to look that lean? It's just not really appealing. It's a goal accomplished but it's just not 'pretty'.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (109 posts) at 03:42 PM:
3.5 % body fat, OCPANTHER, is not possible to sustain at all, let alone one normally kept by elite athletes. I suspect it can occasionally be hit at the end of endurance activity, such as the Tour de France. Also, for whatever it is worth, the plus or minus error range of even the best of body fat measurement systems makes it impossible to say with any certainty what someone's body fat is. It's a fun topic to discuss, but really nobody can win the argument. I also think that the notion that motocross riders are the most conditioned and toned of all athletes is so subjective that it is pretty much meaningless.

I'm not gunning for a six pack if it means reaching an unhealthy level of body fat. I'd rather have a flatter stomach, a full head of hair, clear skin and a menstral cycle.

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (7 posts) at 10:13 PM:
Mike, you are entitled to your oppinion and you are right about body fat measurements being unpredictable, there is actually a 3% marging of error when measuring BF with calipers. And the safest levels for a man are around 5% and females 12%. the information i share comes from a 5 yr degree in sports medicine. I hope they didn't lie to me after spending all that cash. Oh and regarding motorcross, it is somewhat objective, there is an study done in the AJSM that supports their body composition and you can comare that vs other studies done on various atheletes from numerous sports. and when i discussed bodyfat and how low it can be maintained i said that 3.5% could be sustained for a while (1-3 months) i wouldn't recommend any male to go that low unless you are in a fitness competition, it really takes its toll on ones immune system. thanks for the response though. check this page out for more info on bodyfat. http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/body_comp/a/aa090200a.htm

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (79 posts) at 10:24 PM:
I'm wondering if times haven't changed, then, if they are now teaching in school that the "safest levels for a man are around 5% and 12% for females." I got my degree in physiology, with a major in sports medicine from the UofA (a major medical and research institution) and from what I recall from my body composition class, 5% is basically the MINIMUM body fat percentage a man could be at before it is considered UNhealthy. I wouldn't exactly say that 5% is the safest. And certainly, 12% for women is not the safest, because at levels that low, women tend to have hormonal issues and many lose their menstrual cycles. That certainly is not considered "safest" or even normal. I'm not saying I'm an expert, as I only used my degree to become a biology teacher and I don't keep up with new developments in sports medicine but 5% and 12% goes against everything I learned if that's considered optimal.

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (7 posts) at 10:58 PM:
Jen I do agree with you about the 5% being the minimum that a man "should" be. I was saying that for those competing in this challenge that want their after pic to look absolutely ripped that they shouldn't go below 5%. I went to Pitt which is also know for their medical research. They use the 5 and 12% as minimums. However it is up for debate if athletes can reach 3 or 4% for short periods of time. Low badyfat can be much more detrimental to females because of the menstrual cycle. Low BF can sometimes be a symptom or warning sign of the female athlete triad which is a very bad thing.

My understanding is that YOU CANNOT SPOT REDUCE, unfortunately. The place where you carry the most fat is where you will lose it last. I carry fat mostly in my butt and legs. My whole body got smaller, but I still carried in those areas...they were shrinking in size, but so was the rest of me, so proportionately, I was still the same. Make sense??? Stef :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1942 posts) at 03:40 PM:
Steff is right. Same thing for me it all shrinks proportionately. Some people carry in different areas than others and some people just don't seem to understand this. I carry absolutely NO upper bodyfat and it just pisses me off sometimes when people comment about my arms & the veins; how skinny I am, blah, blah. The dimples under my butt and on my butt SAY quite clearly I am not TOOOOOOO skinny. It says I'm carrying my fat differently than you. As was said above; there are different problem areas for differnt people; its really just quite that simple.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (200 posts) at 04:56 PM:
I know exactly what you mean Stef. When I was overweight I still had a nice hour-glass shape figure. Now I'm a smaller version of that. Everything has shrunk but I'm more or less the same shape, although I have worked soooooo hard these last 7 months on my legs that they have significantly tonned up and shrunk. My bum still isn't as pert as I'd hoped for, and I really want to tackle theamount of fat that covers it. Only time will tell. Flower, you're singing to the choir. I'm always getting my coller bones pinched and being told, "God I could snap you nowadays!" But I invite them to pinch a handful (or two) of my arse! LOL! I just wanna look good naked! Is that too much to ask???

Please inform as to how many portions bread/rice/tortillas allowed per day. I noticed some people have one, some two, some three, so what is the recommended amount. Thanks for the feedback

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (67 posts) at 07:06 AM:
Tricky question. While grain breads/rice/tortillas are a carb, some will argue they are not good carbs. Use whole wheat versions. I currently have 2-3 per day.

For myself...bread seems to really "stick to me." If I eat any rice/bread/tortillas- they are whole wheat and brown rice. For myself...if I am craving bread, and have a sandwich on wheat..I try to eat extra veggies, but that's just me. I count mine as carbs- and I steer way clear off the "white" versions of these. All of that processed food is what I believe gave me that bloated look before I started (well...o.k., plus the extra weight and fat..hee hee).

Thread: How clean is 'clean eating'? (170 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (15 posts) at 03:09 PM: How clean is 'clean eating'?
Okay, people who are transforming - just how clean do you eat? Besides free day do you just have tunnel vision 6 days a week and NEVER eat anything that is not in the original BFL book? EVER? Is your dinner the regimented palm/fist ratio? Just curious cuz I think this is where I am falling short. I don't snack and eat junk foods but I think my dinners are too big and probably too much olive oil.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1942 posts) at 03:33 PM:
Um, that would be a no. For the time being, anyway.

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (526 posts) at 03:44 PM:
For me clean eating is 6 days a week, only BFL foods, no slip-up's and stay within my own limits that I've set. I do not follow the palm/fit ratio-as that is much too loose for me to faithfully follow. I do measure my portions so that I know I'm not going over. Now, please don't ask me when the last time I've had a clean week! lol Jennifer

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (109 posts) at 03:53 PM:
If you THINK your dinners might be too big, they no doubt are. And you don't need olive oil either. Yeah, I know, it's a "good fat," but you'll get all the fat you need is nthe meals without intentionally adding any, and if you do add any, make it flaxseed oil or fish oil. Good luck.

Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (15 posts) at 04:40 PM:
Well, I'm sure my dinners are too big. I just have to get a backbone and cook my own food for dinner. My husband is the cook here and a fantastic one at that. He definately doesn't believe in eating a bodybuilders type diet so I either eat what he prepares (lots of pasta, lots of olive oil, very meditteranean) or I cook for myself. A pain in the neck but ya gotta do what ya gotta do, right? No luck involved-I just have to do it!

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (200 posts) at 04:47 PM:
To me clean eating is about eating fresh veg, fresh fruit, and plenty of lean meat. I eat macrobiotically, because I live near a farmhouse, so I feel as though I'm getting the freshest foods available. Since eating this way, I haven't had so much as a sneeze in 7 months. I don't have a free day from eating healthily either, because I can't stomach proccessed foods anymore. I've only eaten bread and potatoes once in 7 months, and I haven't eaten rice, pasta, chocolate or drank alcohol at all. I do include olive oil as part of my diet, but I don't add any salt to anything, and try not to eat dairy. Oh, and water, water, water!

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (79 posts) at 10:29 PM:
I'm eating clean just about 7 days a week. I'm allowing myself a "cheat" on my free day, but that is basically one meal where I allow myself to have a white carb, rather than a whole-grain one. For instance, I might have a low-fat veggie corn dog (3 grams fat) on my free day. It's not high in fat and the carbs are okay but not for BFL days because it's not whole-grain and it has some carbs from sugar. It's still a treat for me because I'm being so strict the rest of the time. I'm afraid if I cave completely, I'll be back to square one! Good luck to you!

Hope you all did good and have something to be proud of. My proud moment this weekend is that after Thanksgiving, I'm packing up leftovers from Thanksgiving to take to my brother and sister-in-law and my husband says, no . . . don't take the cake (4 slices left and I was going to leave him 2)  So I don't give them any cake and the jerk (love him to death!) has been eating cake in front of me all weekend!!!! I haven't had any . . . one piece left, I told him it had to be gone before he left on his business trip tomorrow.

Don't forget to send me your stats by tomorrow evening . . . we'll need the extra points I have a feeling!

Thread: Temptation at Work (53 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (7 posts) at 05:00 PM: Temptation at Work
Ok so I officially start my first challenge tommorow. I already try to follow a healthy lifestyle by working out and eating well...most of the time. My weaknesses are eating and overeating when i'm stressed, depressed.... So, I try and stay clear of junk food and avoid eating it as much as possible. Well here is my dillema. I live in the south and as most of you know, we are not exactly known for eating well and staying fit. The people I work with are constantly going out to eat at Mexican restaraunts, ordering unhealthy takeout, bringing sweets and Chick-fil-a biscuits to work on a weekly basis. When we have unhealthy food at work I almost never eat it because I know I won't be able to stop. {I have my share of junkfood on the weekends and in the evening.) I also bring my lunch almost everyday, not just to be healthy but to save money. Anyway, they are always making comments about my eating habits. "Gosh, you always eat so healthy." "Look at you eating all healthy, you make me feel bad." "We can never get you to eat unhealthy, do you ever eat?" This may sound ridiculous but they make me feel GUILTY for eating well. I feel like they think I have an eating disorder or something because of the way I eat. I had some guy make a comment because I had a salad for lunch. He was concerned I wasn't eating enough. It has become stressful for me when anything about food comes up at work. I worry about what they will say next when I pull out my lunch, refuse to eat sweets that are brought to work or what I order when I eat out with coworkers. I have gotten so fed up with it that I occasionally just eat the junk they bring so I don't have to hear their comments. I would appreciate any insight ya'll have to give. Thanks

Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (200 posts) at 05:13 PM:
I suffered the same thing when I started my job, because I wouldn't stop at the pub with everyone at lucnh time for a pie and a pint. I too got a couple of comments, but I soon made them stop. I basically told the people who had past judgment that I didn't appreciate their comments towards me, whether they were made through concern or not. That it is hard enough to make a change and eat healthily with all of the temptation thrust infront of me each day, I certainly didn't need to be ridiculed or singled out because of it. Basically I told them firmly but politely, to just keep their opinions to themselves. If a person who was overweight was eating a big bucket of chicken and 5 gallons of full fat coke, would you turn to them and say; "God! Stop eating that crap you big fat whale!" No, of course you wouldn't. So why should a person who is trying to IMPROVE their eating habits be commented on either? Do NOT feel guilty about improving yourself. You are SOLVING a problem for yourself, while OTHERS are trying to cause more for you. Just stand your ground, be vocal and remember, don't let the b******ds grind you down! Next time someone passes comment, don't reach for the bowl of candy on the table, push it away and say "Think what you want, I've got nothing to prove to you. I'm trying to prove something to myself." Jules x

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1942 posts) at 05:21 PM:
Okay, I'm going to say something here that may offend some, but daisy actually brought it up. There are some people, in some parts of the world that are worse than others. I live way up in Canada and can only go by what "I hear". There have been several people here from the southern states that have commented on the very exact thing. For reasons unbeknownst to others there are just some "areas" worse than others. In Toronto (and believe me not all places or work) it would be "uncommon" to not be eating healthy. In large office tower areas so called "health food" is the norm. Its all about demographics I guess. In these areas you may find a KFC or a McDonald's but the line-ups are nothing and I mean nothing compared to the "healthy" choice foods. Its gotta be about how the "health craze" has hit people demographically. It gets to the point where it hits you pyschologically. My MIL ordered KFC a while back. My instincts just kicked in - meaning in recoil. I love junk food but you get to the point where you're "conditioned" to not touch that stuff. Same applies to the people you speak of; they're conditioned to eat that stuff. I say eat whatever the hell you want regardless of you're conditioning. Just like I did when I ate the damn KFC the MIL ordered!!!

Over here in Britain we have the "home-cooked meal" epidemic. That's where you go to your parent's house or even worse, your gandparents, and they feed you home-cooked meal after home-cooked meal! LOL If you don't finish they say that you're wasting away!

I live in the south in Tennessee. When I was growing up my mother and grandmother cooked 3 meals a day 7 days a week and everything was fried or cooked with lard. I am getting to the point I cant take anything that is fried or sweet. It takes awhile to break the old habits but my 3yr wont touch it if it has been fried she calls it soggy food. Thank you lord for small miracles.

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (7 posts) at 05:32 PM:
You are both right. I mean why should I feel guilty about eating HEALTHY when they are the ones destroying their body? Rock-chick thanks for the encouragement, I know I just need to speak up for myself and not give in to their negative comments. Flower, you're right. Here in America, the "health craze" has hit some states and regions before others. I lived in Colorado for the ski season...they are health freaks. They're all about eating all natural foods. For whatever reason things reach the south slower than they reach other parts of the country. I agree, we are conditioned to eat a certain way. My parents have conditioned me to always finish what is on my plate, to eat dessert after every dinner and eat in front of the t.v. But you're right, in order to change my body I have to re-condition myself.

Hi everyone! I have had so many nice compliments from everyone. Its just been so lovely. I thought i would post what i did for this challenge so you can get an idea if you want to do it the same way. Yes you can do anything you set your mind too. Its just a mental game this challenge. Even when you don't feel like eating right or working out you have to find a way to change your mind and Just do it! The only differences i did for the challenge were limiting my free day to a free meal like homemade pizza's and i allowed myself to have a low fat hot choc every night before bed and introduced alot of natural peanut butter to my diet. I was having 3 servings a day of the stuff. Maybe the extra good fats i was having helped. Well it definately helped in the way of not cheating. This is what i ate on a daily basis: M1 Oats/skim and whey M2 low fat cottage cheese with 2 teaspoons of natty peanut butter mixed in and a green apple on the side M3 Chicken salad with low cal dressing or Chicken and salad and avocado sandwich on wholemeal bread M4 Protein shake and 50ml diet yogurt and 1 teaspoon of n.pb. M5 chicken stirfry with lots of veges or Chicken grilled in lemon and garlic with lots of green veges and mustard sauce for taste. No starchy carb late at night Then as M6 i would have the low fat hot chocolate and 1 tsp of n.pb. I really think this diet made me not feel deprived and thus i kept going and got good results. The workouts were the same but abs 3 times a week as per shawn phillips Absolution workout! working upper, lower and obliques. Hope this works for you too Wendy.

Wrecky, I know exactly how you feel. In my opinion, working the shoulders makes the biggest visual difference of all the body parts. But it's the weakest area for me. So I just keep the weights lighter, keep super excellent form (don't strain the neck!), work really slow, and concentrate extra hard on the muscle being worked. I'm not really good at explaining this, but I really try to SQUEEZE the muscle at the pause, between lifting and lowering the weight. Whew, I'm tired just reading this! Anyhow, the weight will come, so just concentrate on excellent form. You're gonna look awesome!

Hello All, well I just finished week 3 and I still feel bloated. My body is looking a little stronger, but my stomach is not reducing. Any suggestions? Thanks to all of you who are dedicated to help all of us on this website. Thanks Motochick

well I see a difference in your pictures. How are your clothes fitting? Give it some time, things will change, I promise. Lori

Are you drinking all your water? When I drink 100 oz plus, I can feel the bloat going away. I haven't been drinking as well with the holiday and being off work so I'm bloated up a little. Can't believe I am looking forward to going back to work so I'll drink my water!

I think you look great...seeing results!! Awesome!! Make sure you drink all of your water, and eat plenty of veggies and fruits. I find that when I don't eat enough veggies, and I eat too many protein bars and shakes, I get a bit bloated. Keep up your hard work!!
