Am I the only person on herethat absolutely hates doing abs. I love weight training and working on every other body part but can't seem to enjoy abs. Maybe if I do them at the beginning of my workout instead of the end? Does anyone have any good exercises that they perform for them? Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by TaraC29 (43 posts) at 08:05 AM
Do you workout at a gym or have access to a stability ball, bosu ball or incline bench? I have tons of ab exercises because they are my favorite.
I would say getting them in anytime would be okay but I've always heard to work them last after they are warmed up.

I don't hate abs, but I do hate the treadmill!!
Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (573 posts) at 08:22 AM
Abs are a necessary evil.. They help with a ot more than looking good.. You have a much higher chance of injuring your lower back if your abs are weak..
Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (322 posts) at 08:35 AM
I have heard it both ways. To do them after your workout so they are warmed up, and to work them at the beginning of your workout (after a 5 minute warm up) so they aren't already tired from the workout and you can focus more on form. I usually do mine at the end though because I can lay in the floor for a while after I'm done.

I've been working my abs but maybe only half-heartedly. I am starting this routine, as recommended by many on this BB, tomorrow after my cardio.
Good luck!

Sometime somewhere along our journey to our transformations we're going to here this:
"You are so obsessed about this weight loss thing!"
Or something to that effect.
It may come from your wife, your husband, your kids, your friends, co-workers, ghosts, dogs, cats, etc..if you haven't heard it yet. You will.
Let's face it. You DO have to become obsessed with an endevour like this. Its the only way you can fully get the transformation you want and deserve. "Normal people" do not go through the day with all of their meals packed with them, get up at 3-4am in the morning to head to the gym, track their meals and calories, plan, journal, sweat, bleed, puke, sacrifice, etc. all in the name of a better life. It's a heck of a lot easier to wake up, stumble around, and get your meals out of a drive-thru sack.
That kind of lifestyle will eventually get you many things:
diabeties (spelling), heart disease, cancer, sluggishnes, depression, overeating, and low self esteem, not to mention a thousand others. Oh, it's a grand list, but do you want any part of it?
I'd rather be obsessed, wouldn't you?
But HOW obsessed are you? Are you reading this while you should be working? :) Do you plaster inspiring pictures all around you no matter where you are? Do you shop at GNC more than the grocery store? Do you read everything about fitness you can get your hands on? Do you want to run into a McDonalds and hand out fruit to everyone? When you have sex do you see it also as cardio? I'd like to hear just how obsessed everyone is about their transformation and fitness! Feel free to be obsessed!! You are among the obsessed! :)

Tiger - Yup, I'm Doing the big "O". I read at work, and first thing in the morn, and late in the evening. I talk about it, eat it, do it. I keep buying things, weights, tapes, supplements, books, journals, etc....
Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (322 posts) at 08:32 AM
I guess that would be me...lol. However, I'm not the one who wants to stand in McD's and hand out fruit. I'm the crazy person running around the grocery store wanting to snag the junk food out of people's shopping carts and replace it with healthy foods. Seriously, I have been tempted to do this many a time, however, I have rethought my actions in an attempt for survival. If I didn't think I'd get shot or chased down by the enraged fat laty for stealing her Hoho's or Ding Dongs, I would.
Yeah, I'm obssessed, but I haven't heard it from anyone yet. Hubby is supportive in his own special way (taking us to Dairy Queen at 8:30 in the evening, brining me pie and other stuff)...lol. He knows I won't eat it until my cheat day anyway, but his thinking is I'm going to be unhappy if I deprive myself of the things I love and he just wants me to be happy. I'm doing good though.
Take care.

Have you noticed when you go to the grocery store you check out everyone's cart to see what's in it? LOL
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (125 posts) at 08:49 AM
Im obsessed and have been for a VERY long time it seems. I am always thinking about what I am going to eat, when I will be able to workout and how I can be healthier. My husband is very supportive and so are all the other members of my family back home. At the same time, I know the hubby gets annoyed with my neverending weight loss "revolutions" and heck, I do too, and sometimes I wish that I could be one of those skinny girls that has no care in the world and eats whatever they please, but I know thats never going to happen so I have to continue to be obsessed and live with the reality that I CAN get fat again!!
Everybody knows how important it is to me to keep the weight off and though they find it humorous to tempt and tease me, they do it in good humor and are always supportive when I need it the most.
I am one of those people that look in other peoples baskets at the grocery store and think, "WOW, you are really going to eat all THAT, its full of junk!" Its funny how your mindset changes when you start to realize what you are putting in your body and how you treat yourself physically.
Im glad I am able to share my constant obsessions here with others who can actually understand!
Thanks Tigermuscle:)

Time for one of my favorite sayings...
Obsessed is a word lazy people use to describe the dedicated.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (322 posts) at 09:10 AM
I know, I will hear it from someone before long, but they all know what I'm doing and why I'm doing it and so they don't say anything. The best motivation has come from my older brother (I'm the baby in the family) and we have never gotten along until these past couple of years. It really makes me feel good and want to push for more when he compliments me on how much weight I have lost and how good I look. I have a great family, however, the in-laws are a different story. LOL They probably think I'm obssessed, but I'm going to be a personal trainer and a volleyball coach, so I feel I need to be in great shape.
And yes, I do look in other people's baskets at the grocery store. WV is in the top 5 (actually #3 in the Nation) of the states with the highest obesity level and our state does nothing to make it better. As long as they are making money off of people getting FAT, they are happy. You should see the school lunches! I walk in the grocery store and you know as well as I do, if you are having financial problems then it's very hard to shop for a family of 3,4 or more and buy healthy food. It's just so expensive. It's getting ridiculous the price of even fruit and vegetables around here. So, they buy what's cheap, easy and convenient, but is not healthy at all, just because they can't afford to pay around $6 each for a package of chicken among other things. So I see these people with obese children loading snack cakes and soda and chips in their carts! OMG! No wonder the kids look the way they do! Okay, I'm obssessed...lol. There! No one else has to tell me, I just told myself.
Crystal

Are you reading this while you should be working? :) Yes...shhh!
Do you plaster inspiring pictures all around you no matter where you are? No, I hate pictures
Do you shop at GNC more than the grocery store? No, real food is much better than suppliments. GNC is too high anyway.
Do you read everything about fitness you can get your hands on? I read a lot of bullitin boards. Most of the "fitness" mags out there are only pushing suppliments and give bad advice
Do you want to run into a McDonalds and hand out fruit to everyone? Haha, no, they can do as they wish. Ill continue to laugh at them though and have no pitty when they complain of health issues
When you have sex do you see it also as cardio? Hell yes
Body for Life Forum Message by AirSpace (53 posts) at 09:40 AM
Once I stop being obsessed, it's a slippery slope for me back to complete apathy! Sometimes I think I go a little too far, but hey... if it works...
signs of my total obsession:
I created a database of all my recipes by meal, and created a spreadsheet that will randomly generate a daily, weekly or 12-week meal plan for me - formatted and ready to print and put in my challenge notebook!
I have meticulously tracked and recorded my eating and exercise calories to calculate my caloric deficit for the last 12 weeks and graphed it alongside my daily weight and bodyfat readings a la Hussman (if you are truly obsessed you will know what I'm talking about, lol!)
Luckily hubby is supportive... I will not admit these things to anyone else!

OMG!! I have definatly gotten that along the way on my BFL journey. I think at first people are amazed at the self discipline and then after awhile it makes them feel bad about themselves so they tell you you are "obsessed". I can't help but watch other people at the grocery store, I people watch everywhere and count the number of overweight children in every group then come up with a percentage, lol. It always makes me very sad but VERY determined to raise my kids differently. Good post Tigermuscle! And yes I'M OBSESSED!!!!

I think about it 24/7, sometimes even dream about it, but I would rather this than the old obsessed me.. "what's on TV and how much chocolate can I consume in one sitting".

I needed to make some changes in my life,,, and that was one that needed to happen. I love my mom so much, but we both are so independent it is killing her just hanging around... doing nothing, contributing nothing.... and she doesn't really help with Cameron anymore,,, so I am sending her to San Diego to stay with some friends and maybe, just maybe she can find her own way... I want her to be happy...
now back to my son, he hasn't slept in Daycare for two days now, I need to talk to the doctor about the pills that he gave him... still working with doctors on his behavior, want to potty train him soon....
What do I want for Christmas? For my son to talk to me, so we can have some conversations and I can read to him at night... WHAT A GIFT!!!
WISH HER AND ME LUCK, SHE LEAVES ON THURSDAY!

Good Luck.
I have been thinking about your last post a lot lately.
I have two children...4 and 2. When my oldest was 2, I thought I might throw him out the window. He was like your son...very active, very above and beyond, very mechanical. Much like you are experiencing, there was NO lock that could keep him in, or out. It was highly frustrating. At age 2 he could understand plenty, but his speech just wasn't that developed. I had so many challenges with him. I think your post really made me realize how similar our children sound.
My mother was constantly telling me that the problem was ME....not him. I had him testing for speech, for mental issues, for any issues that might give me a REASON why he was acting so...bad. Nothing. He is a rather normal child.
As he turns 4 today, I have a completely different child. And I am completly different. I think he was just picking up on my stress and not having the skills to know what to do with it, was just acting out. Then I would react and cause a more stressful situation.
I know our situations are different....but I am glad to hear that you are trying to reduce some of the stress in your life....even if it means sending your mother away.
I hope this helps you relax so that you have the energy to deal with a child that probably just wants your undivided attention. That seems to take every ounce of energy I have on some days, but energy I am happy to give away if it makes them happy and healthy.
You are NOT a bad mother. Please don't ever think that. Do your best and know that we ALL struggle.
I wish you the best.
Teresa

and I'm not talking BFL......I got a call out of the blue Monday night, from an previous employer (I haven't been happy with my job or "I should say job direction" in quite sometime). Anyway, this person told me of the situation and asked me if I would be intrested? I asked if I could call her back the following day.
So, I called her yesterday and asked for a 5:00 meeting, the thing is they didn't even consider interviewing anyone else for the job (talk about a huge compliment).
I got EVERYTHING I asked for (I always say "shoot for the moon, and settle for the stars"...this time I got the moon),
salary, vacation, sick time, 401K (that they offer NO ONE else).
I think sometimes things are just meant to be.......I enjoy this type of work (Accounting-Office Mgr.) and it'll keep me busy (no snacking time.....body beneficial) AND unlike my recent work history I don't have to worry about a business closing or being purchased, I've gone thru both of these in the last 7 years, lost my job both times.....talk about a crush to your ego.....make lots of money and suddently it's gone and your on unemployment. The bank that I currently work for (keep in mind that I enjoy my job) sold to another bank a couple of months ago, and it is quite uncertain as to whether or not they will keep this branch open.
So, I'll not look a gifthorse in the mouth....I'm taking the job and I'll accept it for the blessing it is.
Wish me luck!!! I just hope their computer system is internet accessible :)

I am planning on breastfeeding, so my question is, does anyone know of a protein supplement that is safe for breastfeeding women. I know I am supposed to stay away from artificial sweetners so that is my biggest problem in finding one. Any suggestions would be helpful!! I dont even care if it tastes foul :) Just need that little extra help getting more protein at least for one meal.

What would 504 cans of Coke, 217 Snickers bars, 25 pounds of coal, 100 Whoppers, 700 bananas and/or jumping rope for 4 days all have in common -- among other things?
They all contain an amount of energy equivalent to loosing -- or gaining -- 20 pounds!
Jeremy Likness wrote a cool little program to let us know what we're up against. Enter an amount in pounds and see what happens!
See it at: How Many Pounds?
Have fun -- and thanks, Jeremy!

Hi gang! I just created a post on my blog using speech-to-text conversion on my laptop PC. It's pretty cool! I not only posted the text but also the voice dictation file so you can listen to me ramble if you've got nothing else to do!
Check it out at

or just click on my homepage icon to go there.
BTW -- I'm on my way to the gym for the first time in weeks! I'm finally starting to feel well enough to work out - at least a little. Hopefully, I'll be up to full speed soon...

Just wanted to add that the software I'm using is Dragon Naturally Speaking. It's a lot better than the software in Windows XP. You go through training exercises where the software learns how to better understand and translate your voice. After you do that it becomes about 95% accurate and thus useable.
I also can dictate into my digital voice recorder and then transcribe it into text by hooking it up to the computer!
Cool stuff!
Teresa - I'm curious as to what you thought my voice should sound like!

I was wondering if its possible to alter the length of sleeves on dress shirts. It seems like every nice dress shirt I get, the sleeves are too long by about 2 1/2 inches. Is there anything that can be done? Would it cost a lot?
Thanks,
Chuck
Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (279 posts) at 09:15 PM
I am almost positive it can be done, but I am wondering why you are buying the wrong size?? Aren't sizes for shirts like 17/35, the 17 being the neck and the 35 having something to do with arm length (maybe arm span). Am I making any sense? Anyhow, maybe you need to go to a nice store (like a Nordstrom) and get measured and then if you need to have it altered, they can do it there and if I remember correctly, if you buy something full price, the alterations are free. I used to work there many moons ago and it used to be that way.
As for the cost, I would say it's in the $20 range, but I could be way off. You could also have shirts custom made and get all snobby on us!!! Kidding, of course :-)
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (618 posts) at 09:45 PM
Unfortunately no. Most mens shirts are sold by neck size only. I wear a 15 or 15.5 They are not top of the line shirts (Arrow or Croft and Barrow) but they are not cheap. Maybe the really expensive ones list a arm length.

Hi gang!
I wasn't feeling very well this weekend. So I didn't let you guys know that I had a birthday on Friday! It's hard to believe that I turned 51 years old. The good news is that I don't feel 51 years old!
All I have to do is remember where I was at last year on my birthday to feel great about this last year and the progress I've made... Dropping over 100 lbs. does wonders for your outlook!
Thank you all for your help in making this a great year!
Can't wait to meet you guys on the cruise next summer! I'm sure I will have as much fun as can be expected from an old fart! (Yuk! Yuk!)

I use a recumbent bike but have heard great things about spinning
Body for Life Forum Message by CentralOhioGuy (9 posts) at 10:12 AM
Not only the spin bike... but I do the whole spin class thing. It is the only fun cardio I can do (In the winter). Treadmills and eliptical machines bore me to death.
The classes last 45 minutes so it is more than the 20 min HIIT. But I always make sure the last song in the class to push myself to my High Point.
Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (416 posts) at 10:34 AM
I have a stand that I put my mountain bike on so I can ride it indoors and I love it. I also have a treadmill I run on. I wiah I could get my elliptical machine back from my parents. (I stored it at their house while my husband and I were moving last year and my dad started using it. Now I don't have the heart to take it back because he really NEEDS to work out even more than me.)
I miss spinning class at the gym. But I quit the gym when I moved because I realized I enjoyed working out at home more because when Iwas at the gym I always felt guilty that I was out of the house so much!!

The fluid requirement for the majority of endurance athletes, under most conditions, is about 8 to 16 ounces per hour. There is considerable variation here, of course, due to individual sweating rates, body size and weight, heat and humidity, and running speed, and other factors. Still, much more than this amount of fluid is, in most instances, probably physiologically excessive as well as uncomfortable, as liquid sloshes around in the gut during the activity.
One way to test if you are drinking too much water is to compare your body weight before and after a long run. Normally, people lose weight during the course of a distance event. But over-hydrated individuals typically either gain weight or maintain their starting weight. It is interesting to note, too, that this problem tends to be more of a concern with slower runners, because they are exercising at a lower intensity, and therefore have a lower fluid requirement. Also, the slower runner has more opportunity to consume fluid.

I agree with Tara, make sure that you choose the bars with less sugars, some are very high in fat also. All in all it is much better to go with shakes or powder because there are less preservatives, sugar, fat and they make you mix with water which is very good for you also. Shakes tend to fill me up for a longer time. The Myoplex has numerous vitamins and minerals that protein powder doesn't provide but you could substitute a multivitamin, just don't forget a multimineral pill as well though.

The Luna bars are a great bar. They have a variety of flavors and they don't have a very high sugar content either. They are naturally occuring sugars and no added sugar. Plus, they taste great. I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein and it's 110 cals, .5g fat, 2 or 3g. carbs (I know it's pretty low) and 25-26g protein. I love the stuff, it's pretty reasonably priced, mixes well and tastes great.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (618 posts) at 09:47 AM
First off, real food is best by a long shot. If you can manage real food, do that.
Second, dont eat bars at all. convenience is not an excuse. They sell ready to drink myoplex shakes if youre in a pinch. The bars are loaded with sugar and are basically a glorified candybar.
Third, myoplex is a meal replacement shake (not a protein shake) that contains protein and carbs. The carbs that is in myoplex is called maltodextrin. Its not a great carb source and I would argue that the protein powder that your using now, along with oatmeal, is a better choice to begin with.
Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (24 posts) at 08:31 PM
Thank you for the info. chuckdiesel.
I had two protein bars today so I guess that wasn't the best choice?
I really need to figure out better meal plans. I am eating good proteins and carbs for every meal (6 meals) but I am STILL hungry. I actually just had a protein bar only an hour after dinner because I was so hungry. I don't know if I should eat more at each meal or just have more meals.

When you get sore after exercise it is medically referred to as DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). DOMS is not uncommon, particularly if you are just beginning exercise program or changing activities. For those starting a new exercise routine or learning a new sport, some muscle soreness may be felt from 12-48 hours following the activity. You may also experience muscle stiffness, fatigue and weakness. Rest assured, this is a normal response to unusual exertion as the muscles adapt to the new stress. Over time this adaptation leads to greater muscle strength and endurance and the same activity will no longer result in soreness. Delayed onset muscle soreness is generally the worst within the first 2 days following the activity and subsides over the next few days.
It is thought that delayed onset muscle soreness is the result of microscopic tearing of the muscle fibers. The amount of tearing (and soreness) depends on the activity, the intensity and the time of the activity. Any movement you aren't used to can lead to DOMS, but eccentric muscle contraction (movements that cause muscle to contract while it lengthens) seem to cause the most soreness. Examples of eccentric muscle contractions include going down stairs, running downhill, lowering weights and the downward motion of squats and push-ups. In addition to small muscle tears there can be associated swelling in a muscle which may contribute to soreness.

Well eating is the key ingredient to transforming your body. I would encourage him to follow the eating plan. Not only will this get him in better shape but it will also feed his body with the right nutrients to fight off his injuried and get him healty again. I use to rehab alot of athletes with various back injuries, now grant it a collegiate athlete is going to be able to get back on his/her feet more quickly than the average joe but with a little determination and will-power he will be recovering faster that you would think. You need to motivate him and I think by you sticking to the plan this will happen. Make sure he gets in rehab as soon as his Dr. clears him. The problems with most people that injure themselves is that they let it go too long before getting into therapy. I hope this help and don't hesitate to ask any more questions!
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (618 posts) at 09:25 AM
Sometimes doctors can over-exagerate things.
I would take the time off from exercising until his back is better. Did he hurt it in the gym or at work?
As far as never running again, whats so wrong with his spine that he cant do that? What about elipical machines? They are very low impact.

Hi Crystal, thanks for the feedback. I got the original BFL book yesterday and yes, Bill Philips classifies yogurt as a carb, to be mixed with a protein. The BFL for women by Dr Pamela Peeke, classes as a protein. Including low fat cheeses. So now I will have to wean myself off the BFL for women and start following Bills plan, as I have noticed many differences, was up reading at 4.00am this morning. Not sure why the difference, but I am happy to accept as in the original book. Take care and regards

I have to admit I am a cardio junkie. I cannot do without my cardio, six days a week. I know that some people say this might go against the BFL system, but I have tried not doing it every day and just doing the UB & LB workouts and I dont feel as good. What do you long timers think. This is my first challenge. I am on week 7 and have lost 14lbs, and feel better than I have in years. I did 4 miles in 41 minutes on the Elliptical this morning. I do my HIIT and then keep going for a while. I love Cardio!!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (12 posts) at 08:56 AM
I like doing cardio everyday on the treadmill. It feels like something is missing if I don't. However, I read that your leg muscles don't get the proper rest, for building them, if there isn't a break so I try to alternate between intense and lite days.
I see most people talk about the speeds they are doing on the treadmill, does anyone use the incline for more of a challenge?

I also watched the finale, and was so proud of the women, esp Suzy , Andrea (who everyone had pretty well written off) and Shannon. They all did such an awesome job. My only gripe is the disparity in the men/women..Suzy would have had to lose half her body weight (down to 111) to have a chance of winning..and at 5'4 would be too thin for her..I am certainly not taking anything away from Matt who had his own demons to overcome for sure and DID IT, even the men earlier on said they had the advantage based on physics.
I think they all did an outstanding job.

Questions about the show: After someone was voted off the show, were they left on their own to continue working out or did they get to stay in the program, but not on the show.
I was very impressed with how much weight they appeared to have lost AFTER they were voted off. The guy who won the $100K looked awesome!
Also, I wonder how the results would have turned out if they measured % BF lost as opposed to % body weight.
And finally, I couldn't stay up long enough to see who won. :( I don't know their names so was it the woman, the guy who used to have the crazy hair or the other guy?

You're so right! I just knew it was going to be Matt ever since I found out he was an Iowa wrestler. While I was attending the U. of Iowa, I heard the coach at the time, Dan Gable, speak about being a true champion. I knew how Dan had the ability to instill those qualities in his wrestlers, as he absolutely lived and breathed that life himself. When I saw that short clip last night of Matt running the bleachers at Carver Hawkeye Stadium, I got some serious chills! I was so thrilled that he won, and to become sober as well, well that's just the greatest victory of all.

I really loved the show last night too. The doctor was the one that really got me. He just looked incredible. Knowing that he's now such an AWESOME role model for his patients is just great!
All of the transformations were wonderful.
I bet it was hard for them after being at the ranch for 3 months and then left for 5 months to do it on their own. Good for them to see what it's like in the 'real world'! Like when they showed Suzy ordering at the restaurant with her friends. I don't think I ate out of the first 6 weeks of BFL for the same reason!!
I am truly inspired for all of the cast members on the show. However, I was saddened to see that one of the men didn't want to come back. Wonder if he decided he also didn't want to live a healthier, fitter life??

I was so happy for all the contastants, but I felt really bad for Mark. To go up against Pete for $100,000 needing to lose 166 lbs, and then stepping on the scale finding out that it was 165 lbs. Coming up 1 lb short. That same with Suzy. 1 lb was difference between nothing and $100,000 grand for Mark, and $25,000 and $50,000 for Suzy. I was really impressed that all but two of the contestants kept losing and looked REALLY awesome after the show! I felt bad for Mark too, one pound!
Those ladies really looked FABULOUS! I kept saying, man, she looks AMAZING one after the other. Good inspiration to be extra clean and work out a little harder! :)
NOW I'd like to see Biggest Loser do one with people who are maybe only 20 -30 lbs overweight, and have them getting really buff. That way I could try out!! :) :) :)

That show was great, and I'm so in agreement with all your comments.
But I gotta ask: WHAT KIND OF CRACK WERE CAROLINE RHEA'S WARDROBE AND HAIR DESIGNERS SMOKING?!? She did not look that great - actually, it was pretty bad all around.
I know, it's not so popular or charitable of me to criticize, but we're talking about someone who has access to work with talented people who could select better clothes (black on black and loads of cleavage are not so flattering on her) and create a nicer hair style. And if they had, she could have looked pretty hot. For goodness sakes, she was on for TWO HOURS, and it was LIVE. She would be standing alongside people who lots tons of weight. Her designers blew it.

...and for my next moment of snarkiness: Was it a well-known thing that Suzy did not get along with Matt? I only watched the last couple of episodes, so I don't know what happened the rest of the season. BUT - this final show it seemed apparent to me that Suzy was freezing out Matt. It was like she really had a hard time congratulating him. Did anyone else catch that?

My dear bfl Buddies.
Why wait till the new year to start your challenge? This is an extract from Marc Bennets last blog...
So many people wait until new year's to set new goals. How about setting a goal to have improved your physique before new year's eve. Just a thought.
Best of LIFE!
Marc
It hit home, so true. It takes sacrifice to undertake this challenge during any period, let alone now that the holidays are coming up.
Like when Kevin Hubbard was under taking his amazing 12 week transformation decided to have a myoplex rather than a slice of his BIRTHDAY CAKE.
I think enough said, god bless from a Sunny Cyprus (its still warm can you believe it :-) )

Hi all!!!
I know a lot of people are able to get thru the holiday season without going crazy...moderation is the key! I am one of those people who loves my BFL lifestyle, but I also love socializing during the holidays. That socializing includes a few treats and maybe some adult beverages. That being said I am taking it a little easy and allowing some goodies. I will not go hog wild though!
January 2nd Russ and I are officially starting a couples BFL challenge. I am also doing another Challenge on a smaller scale. It is the MsFit Meltdown 12 Week Challenge. It runs for 12 weeks starting January 2nd. It is open to men and women and is $20 to enter. All of the entry money is put into a pot and the winner gets 75% of the loot.
It would be great for anyone who is coasting thru the holiday season and wants to hit it hard after the first of the year.
Here is the site info....

This morning at the gym I was contemplating the fact that I need to lose approximately 60-75 more lbs. I have already lost 14lb in the first 7 weeks of my challenge and 48 lbs altogether.
Thinking about the fact that those of us with more body fat to lose sometimes get overwhelmed with the magnitude of the task at hand, or at least I do. It takes longer for us to see the results of our labor.
It is hard for me to even envision being a champion right now. It got me thinking about what winning means, in life and in BFL. Those of us whose lives are changing the most are those of us who have the most to lose. I find myself with more energy, more endurance, I am so much more aware of good eating habits. I will never go back to my couch potato existence. My outlook on life has changed so much in 6 weeks that sometimes I hardly recognise myself. I cant wait for my body to catch up.
Keep up the hard work. Anything in life worth having is worth fighting for.
Janice
Body for Life Forum Message by BFL4Stephanie (77 posts) at 09:18 AM
Janice,
Don't be overwhelmed. You still lose weight exactly like anyone else...one pound at a time. My husband lost 62 lbs his first challenge...he went on in subsequent challenges to lose a total of 92 lbs!!
People with a lot of weight to lose can in fact lose a lot of weight fast. The body is so shocked with the new exercise and eating habits it just cries that fat away :) Now you DO have to work hard and follow the plan. At times it will feel like magic..other times it will feel like you're stuck.
The most important thing to remember is to believe in yourself and that you can do it!!
Stephanie
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (125 posts) at 09:25 AM
You CAN do it! I did it and have kept it off for almost 5years. Look at my profile and you can see my before pic, almost 90lbs heavier! When I first started losing weight I never imagined I would look anything like I do now. It was a day to day process and something that I could ever envision(sp?). Losing weight isnt easy to do, but if you put your mind to it and not let anybody hinder your progress it CAN happen!
Keep working hard and setting small realistic goals for yourself, it will pay off in the end I promise and before you know it you will be a whole new person:)

So tell me, what has everyone done when they were in the situation like Suzy was with her friends and had nothing healthy on the menu? I need some good advice in those situations!
Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (201 posts) at 11:13 AM
Honestly I think she over reacted. I think she reacted to what everyone else was able to eat, that she could not. I have been to many restaurants, and you can ALWAYS fall back on a salad with grilled chicken with the dressing on the side - opting for the vinagrette...less fat. There is always something.
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1429 posts) at 11:47 AM
I agree that you can usually find something...however, it may be hard for her to be around others who are eating what is off-limits. Too much temptation, so if that was the case, it was probably best for her to leave considering the money and title that was at stake!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (125 posts) at 12:04 PM
I was mad at her friends for one, they just kind of blew off her concern for wanting to eat healthy and wanted her to try things they knew she wouldnt want to eat! Anyhow, what I do when I go out is almost always plan to have a salad. I have been to some places where there is no such thing as a salad and so I just order grilled meat of sort and veggies or something like that and then I am sure to ask for double the veggies and forget about the rice, mashed potatoes, french fries, etc.
Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer (22 posts) at 12:07 PM
I agree with anavywife. Suzy's friends were thoughtless. They should have chosen a restaurant with a little more variety on the menu so that she could order something healthy. It looked like they were eating at a Thai restaurant and there are no grilled chicken salads at a Thai place. I suppose she could have ordered veggies and tofu stirfry...
Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (179 posts) at 12:13 PM
You must live in the South too, anavywife:) We have to get a little more creative with our ordering down here.
I try to find out about the restaurant beforehand. That way I have an idea of what's available. I have also turned down a lot of requests to go out in the last year. As Suzy said, "This is my life now."
My life is so much simpler and so much better now that I do not live to eat.
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (921 posts) at 12:23 PM
I think Suzy was also partly turned off by the food itself..At least, that's what it looked like to me.
Just part of the learning process I think.
I was really disgusted with restaurant food until I found a good balance of what I could eat on BFL.
Body for Life Forum Message by Ursula (583 posts) at 12:26 PM

I was kind of glad that they showed this scene because SOOO many of us were sitting there thinking, "YEP--that sounds/looks familar!"
This is something that many have to deal with on a daily basis and could be the undoing of a healthy lifestyle. For Suzy, her friends did not seem to respect or care at all that she has made a life-changing commitment to health. That pissed me off for her b/c if they don't provide support it, they should at least RESPECT it and not blow it off.
THE BOTTOM LINE: we've all got to take care of ourselves and health first, no matter the reactions of those around us, especially if they support you or not. There is not a place where something "healthy" or a good alternative can be found. Check out the Restaurant tips on the Biggest Loser site to see Bob and Julian's suggestions. It includes fast food all the way!

I am not so sure that its a lack of respect on part of her friends, at least on a concious level. Perhaps, at a subconcious level her friends were afraid that they were loosing her, because she had changed. She is not the same person they knew before. Therefore, they try to bring her down. I saw it more so with Matt's friends in the bar. But that's just my $.02 worth.
Brian
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (125 posts) at 02:46 PM
alvindsv-you are sooo right! When I started losing weight and eating differently my friends were the same way as Suzy's. They would pick the worst restaraunts and eat fast food all the time knowing how much I didnt want to.
The issue was that they were afraid I was going to change too much. I am not Suzy though...I spoke up and was just blunt about my intentions and it seemed to work itself out. I still have a few problems with friends, but they all know my viewpoint.
One thing that I do that might sound a bit rediculous is I make sure I am always the one driving...that way I am in the most control over where we are eating:)hahaha, kinda stupid but it seems to work!

I slipped up yesterday with the popcorn and then had an extra "meal" last night (a handful of grapes, 6 strawberries & 1/2 cup of fat free/sugar free pudding).
This morning I could barely hold my head up in my meeting (sick child, up all night for two nights straight) so I ran over to Border's Cafe and got a small skim mocha. But then I got a big Berry Blast muffin too instead of eating my whole wheat english muffin & egg.
Workouts are easy for me. Well...not EASY but I don't have a problem adjusting my schedule for them. I love working out. But my eating habits have gone down the drain and I can't seem to pull them back out. I've done OK but I haven't eaten clean.
I did realize something yesterday after my workout. I think I self-sabotage. What if I eat great & work my tail off and nothing happens? Then what? At least right now I have an excuse for being out of shape...even if I don't like it.
Yes...I KNOW that's silly. Calories in vs calories out, nourish your body and all that jazz. But fears are rarely rational. At least I'm aware of that subconscious sabateour now...crazy as it may be.
My goal is to make the rest of the day grrrreat. No more slip-ups.
Sorry this is so long. They say confession is good for the soul.

I've put off "starting" way too many times. There's always an excuse to have one more day of freedom. But it's a false freedom when it does nothing but add to my weight and take years off my life.
The time to change is NOW. And the only one who can make that change in my life is ME. I just have to remember that next time I'm a little down. This is for life...not for 12 weeks.

I find that I just set myself up if I don't pack an entire day of food with me. If I think I can just pick something up, that's usually where I start to skid off the highway. I now pack all of my meals and pack them the night before, and I may throw in one or two "legal" things just in case. I have had days where I've eaten everything that I packed, but am still hungry, so then I started seeking out the vending machines....and again...veering off the wrong direction. Some of mine has been emotional, but most of mine has just been bad planning. Hang in there, you'll find your own groove!

Taking off from the Biggest Loser thread . . . where do you all go out to eat when you need/want to eat out but stay BFL
I like:
Chipotle/Qdoba (Qdoba has FF Sour Cream)
Boston Market
Panera's
Texas Roadhouse (although it's hard to say no to the rolls and they have the best thick Ranch dressing)
Black-Eyed Pea (I get the grilled catfish filet . . . you can order the "Senior" portion and get one instead of two, but it always makes a good leftover)
Tokyo Joes (but not my fav though)
I just want to get some ideas and things I hadn't thought of before.
I did just find out that at Red Robin you can order melon instead of fries (and you can get a turkey, garden or Boca burger instead of ground beef).

Well, out in BFE Iowa we don't get as many restaurant choices as you big city folk, but Panera (we just got one) would be my favorite choice. The Asian Sesame Chicken Salad is a perfect balance of protein and carbs.

Applebees is always a good option. They have plenty of choices and will prepare things just the way you want it. Also, weight watchers endorses them so I feel a little safer eating there:)(at least I know how many points it is before I put it in my mouth!)

I loaned my BFL book to someone a couple weeks ago from my church because she had so many questions about what I was doing to lose weight. Today I saw her at the gym with her daughter in law and they were getting ready to start working out on the treadmill. I was doing LBWO today and could tell exactly what they were doing.... struggling to remember the HIIT pattern LOL. So I stopped my LBWO (I was nearing the end and just finished later) and joined them and coached them through the HIIT. It was awesome!! The lady who'd read the book had previously "maxed out" walking at 2.7 mph on the treadmill (she's just been walking and walking and walking with no results....) and today she went up to 3.4 on her level 10. I was so proud of her! It felt awesome to be spreading the BFL joy :)

I guessed at what weights I should use when I made up my sheet...and I was WAY off. I'm going to have to pump things up majorly next time! I was happy about that.
I also tried the Ab Boot Camp you guys were talking about earlier. I only had time to go through once though so I think I'll start doing it after my cardio instead of on LBWO days. Of course, I DID cut it short to make a run into the mall (work in same bldg)...but there was a cute shirt on sale at NY & Co. and who knows how much longer that was going to last!

There's been talk about setting specific days & times, but obviously nobody (including me) has done it.
If we did scehdule them the same day/time every week, we'd probably need to do more than one because I know there are people (Like Lori) that can't get on there at work and have wierd days off.
My proposal for the beginning would be Sundays at 9pm EST. I can 'host' that one (as in be there every week) to get things started..

I took my son to the climbing gym tonight. We'd been going fairly regularly for about a month until two weeks ago when school & the holidays got in the way. I love to climb...or attempt to climb. But I'd really struggled and never really felt like I'd found my groove on it. But tonight...WOW...it was so great. I was so tired and wasn't going to climb...just let my son do his Kids Club class. But within ten minutes of the scents (chalk & sweat?), the music and watching everyone, I'd grabbed my clothes from the car and was getting my shoes. And it felt GOOD. I was making transitions I never could before...and with ease. I felt more flexible and stronger. I didn't want to leave but hunger drove me to the door! lol
I attribute it to mental changes and maybe a shot of confidence since I've tackled this BFL challenge. No way there's a physical change yet except I'm not retaining water like I was when I was slurping down 3-4 Dr. Pepper's a day. Whatever the change, I'm lovin it!
ANYWAY, I'm babbling again, I know. I just feel so good and need to document it publicly so I can be reminded next time I'm down.
Here's to our adventures and successes!

Hi gang!
I got back from my workout at the gym a couple of hours ago. Due to illness, it's the first time I lifted weights in several weeks. And I've only managed to get in a few bike rides as well. Since I've had so many setbacks over the years, from chronic illness, I've been somewhat concerned that I might lose a great deal of the progress I've made over my first three Body-for-Life challenges. Even though my workout was a short one, it was a great boost for my confidence. After I left the gym, I decided it was time to have another one of my famous talks with myself...
"Way to go, buddy! Doesn't it feel great to be working out again?! Before you know it, Jim, you will have dropped those extra pounds that you picked up the last several weeks and finally get below the magic 200 lb. mark! And then you're going to look back on this latest bout with illness and realize that this was just another bump in the road... not the end of your comeback, but just a temporarily rough ride on the journey to your new body and your new life... I understand how difficult it has been trying to get a handle on this chronic illness... But you knew buddy that setting a high standard for yourself would not be a smooth or predictable ride. Like most people in the world you could have focused on escape and just settled for a mediocre existence. But instead, you are one of the few that refuses to let go of his dreams even when the chips are down.
Don't forget Jimbo, that your frustration is mostly because you're committed to prevail, even under difficult and trying circumstances. So it's very important to keep the proper perspective. The main concern is not so much about hitting bumps in the road, but rather making sure you're on the right road to begin with... And no matter how rough things might get there is no turning back now... Just have faith that you will succeed and finally get your body into the best athletic shape of your life...
So let's keep working to get on top of this illness, and keep looking forward. And just accept that occasionally, you are going to stumble. Remember, you can't build yourself up by tearing yourself down. The next time you hit a rough patch of road, just keep on truckin' the best you can and remind yourself that it's just another bump in the road...nothing more, and nothing less..."
Hope my little dialogue helps you regain a proper perspective when "life" gets in the way of your BFL program...
Jim

I just posted a new pic that shows my 10 month transformation from last christmas eve to Oct
I can't believe that was me in the red suit @200 lbs
I started my Traing with Gus from Lifers on Nov 21, just one week ago and already lost 1 and 1/2 lbs and 1/2 inch off both my hips and waist.
didn't calculate the BF% yet, waiting to do that right before Christmas
Anyway, I gave away my size 20's and 18's and 16's and now the 14's are big and baggy so I told santa if he brought me clothes to bring a size 12
I'm excited, I plan to be size 10 by mt 52nd brthday in February, Yep!! that's the plan!!
and I'll GET*HER*DONE!!
