I just tried I scoop of banana protein power with 1/2 cup of oats. It is horrible. If I would have addes Splenda, would it then taste ok?

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (1106 posts) at 07:54 AM:
I tried it with honey.....it was terrible, too too sweet. I like it with cinnamon and a packet of splenda

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 08:09 AM:
You could try eating it cold. Its very different that way. Try adding just enough water to get all the oats wet and let it sit for a few minutes. Then add splenda or stevia or cinnamon. Yummy

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (226 posts) at 08:13 AM:
Ok...here's a question..can you microwave the longer cooking kind? if not, is it possible to cook the oatmeal, then heat it up later?

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (1106 posts) at 09:03 AM:
I microwave both the quick cook & regular....2 minutes.

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (108 posts) at 09:05 AM:
I use a multi-grain hot cereal that has oats, barley, and some other whole grains (I can't recall but I think there are 4 different ones) when I get tired of plain oatmeal. It doesn't get pasty and mushy like oatmeal- it still has really good substance. I buy it at Trader Joe's. A little Splenda & some vanilla protein powder and I could eat it all day! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 09:19 AM:
Tigermuscle: I microwave the old fashioned oats for 1:30 remove, stir and cook for another 20-30 seconds. You have to play around with the water amounts to get the desired consistancy Make sure you have a large enough bowl so that the oatmeal doesnt expand over the edges while its in the microwave

Body for Life Forum Message by ross (3 posts) at 09:21 AM:
Make oatmeal, let it cool then just throw it in a protein shake. You hardly taste it and it makes the shakes thick if you blend it well.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 09:23 AM:
Ross, I do that too sometimes but I dont cook it first. I might have to try it that way.

Body for Life Forum Message by emKse (54 posts) at 09:28 AM:
im not sure if anyone said this yet....but chocolate oatmeal (oatmeal with chocolate whey and milk) in the EFL book is really good!! i also add splenda ~

Body for Life Forum Message by CAguy23 (12 posts) at 02:17 PM:
When I eat oatmeal, I cook the oats (old fasion) in water, then I add in about a tbs of Smart Balance Light with omega 3's, a little skim milk, and about three packets of splenda. I also just started adding in a half a box of raisins and it's really good. I have tried adding the chocolate protein powder, but just couldn't stomach it-yuck! For my protein source I just have egg whites (about 6) and one or two whole eggs.

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (57 posts) at 02:22 PM:
I can't beleive nobody likes the oatmeal/protein powdr combination. I think it takes great I probably eat at least 12 bowls a week. Recently I added some natural paenut butter for the good fats and it's even better. No splenda, cinnamon, honey, etc. needed.

Body for Life Forum Message by Miss Fit (335 posts) at 02:29 PM:
I like the oatmeal/protein powder combo, but it depends on what protein I use. I like it best with EAS 100% Whey Chocolate, but have tried it with High 5 Banana and GNC's Chocolate and it was really, really awful. Thankfully, I tried the EAS protein first or I may have written it off and it's now one of my staple meals.

Abs are no fun in the beginning but if you push through them, soon they will be so strong, they will be your favorite. I still hate to do crunches because I'd have to do hundreds of them to feel anything but with a medicine ball and a decline bench, they are actually a lot of fun! :) Or try weighted crunches using the cable crossover machine- those will build strength really fast.

I think the lot of us who are serious about this transformation is Obsessed, I mean, how can you not? We have to think about how we are going to get our workouts in, when and what we are going to eat, how much water we are drinking, did we hit our 10's....on and on.... I find myself talking about fitness to whoever will listen! I need to find other topics to talk about.... Oh, here she comes again, talking about her BFL and what she can eat, etc. etc. I don't want to turn into that....

Body for Life Forum Message by transformation (18 posts) at 01:37 AM:
That's why this forum is SO important for me to read each day. It's one of the only outlet I have to relate with other `dedicated' (read: obsessed) people. Otherwise I just end up making my friends feel bad about themselves because they know they should be exercising but aren't. My hubby is being sweet and tolerant of me constantly preaching and saying `look at these results!'

I like being obsessed with eating healthy and working out, then being obsessed with trying to find clothes that fit my fat body, or clothes that make my fat a$$ slim, or (well, you get the picture). Here's to being obsessed with living life.

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (108 posts) at 01:14 PM:
Considering I'm on my computer while my students are taking a test (rather than grading papers), I'd say I'm obsessed. I'm browsing nutritional websites and planning out new foods and recipes to try. I also just snatched a Snickers bar from one of my students and threw it in the garbage! :) The rule is that they can eat in class if it is to fuel their body nutritionally. Absolutely NO sodas, chips, or candy allowed. If they want to bring fruit or a small sandwich, or some whole-grain crackers, I'll let them eat. They can also drink bottled water in class. It's amazing how they're willing to change their diets in order to have the priviledge of eating in class!!! I'd call that obsession!

I know I've read something about this before, but can't find anything on it. Does anyone know why sometimes when lifting weights I get a metallic taste or reaction in my mouth. It's not a lingering taste, it kind of like a spark or something in my mouth.

This is more when really exerting myself hard while lifting. I asked the trainers at Bally's and one of them said it has something to do with electrolyte imbalance, but searching the internet I'm not finding anything resembing what he said.

I know there is something about this on the hussmanfitness site. I was reading on there the other night and he mentioned this and something you're supposed to eat after your workout if this happens to you. I can't recall particulars. Sorry.

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (90 posts) at 09:47 AM:
From what I understand an ammonia/metallic taste/smell occurs when our body starts burning muscle as opposed to fat. Are you eating enough? And are you getting enough carbs in your diet?? Maybe just adjusting those two things will help!! Shelly =)

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (90 posts) at 09:59 AM:
Ok so I looked it up on hussman and it only talks about the ammonia smell so not sure about metalllic taste. If you are smelling ammonia, here is the info for that... http://www.hussmanfitness.org/html/TLRagingMetab.html

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (24 posts) at 10:11 AM:
Sometimes metal taste is caused by a condition known as ketosis. What is ketosis? Ketones are chemicals that your body produces as a by-product of combusting fat. You can buy "ketostix" ( here) which, when passed through urine, can tell you whether or not you are 'in ketosis'. Ketosis happens during fasting, low carbohydrate diets, pregnancy and it can be caused by diabetes. You use up your store of glycogen (blood sugar) and then your body permanently goes into fat burning mode to fuel your bodily functions. This change in metabolism occurs when the body no longer has incoming carbs to produce glycogen and after the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen. When either stored body fat or incoming dietary fat is used as fuel it breaks down into ketones. Ketones can be used as fuel for your body or discarded via your breath or urination. It is the rise in ketone production that means you are in ketosis. Take note that although you are in ketosis this does not mean that you are *only* burning bodyfat. The released ketones may be from either bodyfat or dietary fat. Why do we want to be in Ketsosis?: We want to be in a metabolic state where, without incoming carbs, and without consuming too many grams of dietary fat or protein, our bodies will be burning stored bodyfat as fuel. Positive side effects of being in ketosis are that it can be protein sparing (allowing us to retain lean body mass) and that it can lead to a decrease in appetite for some people. NOTE: Ketosis is NOT ketoacidosis. There are two types of ketoacidosis: diabetic ketoacidosis (which is due to simultaneous rise in blood glucose and blood acidity) and alcoholic ketoacidosis (which is due to heavy alcohol consumption without food intake). If you do not fall into either of these groups your body should have the feedback loops that will keep ketone production in check. Ketones are produced daily by most people to some degree and are a part of the body's system of survival. What are Ketostix ? measure the presence of ketones in the urine. It is important to remember that the sticks only tell you the level of ketones you are excreting through your urine. Readings can vary widely due to many factors: how many ketones are used for energy needs, how well hydrated you are (the more water taken in the more diluted the excretion), how much dietary fat is being burned, and the sensitivity of the ketostix themselves (they do not register low levels of ketone and they are very sensitive to contamination and age). The strips show the amount of ketones being release by the change of color on the testing area: light pink=trace and dark purple=heavy. What are side effects of Ketosis? Bad breath - which is due to ketones being released through your breath, drinking more water will lessen this effect. Some people also report that they get a metal taste in their mouth. Strong urine odor - due to the presence of ketones. Light headedness or "foggy" thinking. This does not occur in everyone and many who do feel this often are helped by making sure they are getting enough to eat, enough water and taking potassium supplements. How long will it take me to reach ketosis? It is dependent upon a few factors. Since you start the production ketones after the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen, the amount of stored glycogen is the primary factor. How much glycogen your liver has stored depends on your very recent calorie intake and activity. If you have already been on a low calorie plan you may have a small amount stored. Depleting the amount of glycogen you do have is dependent upon how fast you body uses up that storage. Therefore you can hasten the depletion of you glycogen storage by being more active. The other factor in developing ketosis is the how much free fatty acids are available to burn.

Since becoming so health-conscious with BFL, I have found myself pouring over research on the benefits of eating organic foods over inorganic. Previously, I had never given it much thought but now I find myself obsessed with buying the freshest, best produce and whole foods that are out there. I guess I figure if I'm going to eat healthy, I might as well do it across the board. I'm just wondering... how many of you have also made the switch and are going to organic foods? Can I ask why?

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 01:33 PM:
I made the switch when it comes to milk. I did it because I dont like the horemones and steroids they pump into the cows to produce more milk. I dont want that stuff in my body and I dont think its the most humane thing to do to the cows either. P.S. Im not a PETA supporter :)

Wait. Soreness will go away in 3 to 7 days with no special treatment. Avoid any vigorous activity that increases pain. Do some easy low-impact aerobic exercise - this will increase blood flow to the affected muscles, which may help diminish soreness. Use the RICE method of treating injuries. Use gentle stretching om the affected area. Gently massage the affected muscles, Try using a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (aspirin or ibuprofen) to reduce the soreness temporarily, though they won't actually speed healing. There is some evidence that vitamin C may decrease soreness. Allow the soreness to subside thoroughly before performing any vigorous exercise. Don't forget to warm up completely before your next exercise session.

Udenia, Early Intervention is a great option bc you can "self-refer", but I believe it only goes up to age 3. Look for a Developmental Medicine dept. or Childhood Development dept. at a respected hospital... this is where we started with my son. They may not give you a dx at this age, but they will help with specifically identifying where he needs help and how to get it (at age 3 I think it is through the school dept). Also, there might be a special ed. preschool through the school dept. there that is more equiped to handle him than the preschool (and would allow him to access therapies -- i.e. occupational therapy or physical therapy or speech therapy right there). Good luck. My son is 7.5 and mildly autistic...

I have lived in Torrance, CA, Steamboat Springs, CO, and Houston, TX. But I've been here in northern NV (about 30 minutes from Lake Tahoe) since my 21st birthday (11 years now and counting). I moved here because my family packed up and came here to start a BBQ business and be close to my grandfather. I got lonely in Houston, was getting into BIG trouble with a very WRONG crowd, so I packed up my VW rabbit and drove out here on my 21st birthday. Happy Birthday to me..... I met my hubbie 5 1/2 years ago while waitressing in a sports bar, going nowhere and now, a short time later, I am an ICU nurse, full time stepmom to a 6 year old and 9 year old, and loving the area I live in. Why? The weather is just amazing...low humidity, hot dry summers, cold snowy winters, and beautiful fall and spring. Snowboarding and skiing is a hop, skip, and a jump away, we have around 5 national parks a day's drive away, including Yosemite, and we can take off to SF for a day trip, since it's about 4 hours away. The only thing that sucks is the cost of living here. Average home price is around $400,000, which I find ridiculous, having grown up in Houston, where houses ran about $100,000 and still do. We don't plan on leaving anytime soon. Family that we are close to has no plans to leave and my hubbie can't move out of state without losing custody of his kids. Nevada doesn't offer much choice of places to live, so here we will stay, at least until the kids are grown. Then, I may do travel nursing, hubbie will quit his job and travel with me, playing golf...ROFL!!! Melanie = )

I love that song from L7...I think it's on the soundtrack to that movie with Juliette Lewis (can't remember the name right now...the one with Woody Harrelson). I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan...it was one of the best concerts I ever went to. Nitzerebb opened, along with OMD. Nitzerebb has a lot of good songs to work out hard core to. I'm a big fan of The Black Eye Peas, but I think it may have a lot to do with the fact Fergie isn't too bad on the eyes (and I'm a straight gal!). She's got a hot voice and a hot body. But their music is pretty good to dance to and work out to. My stepdaughter LOVES "Let's Get it Started". She begs me to put it on everytime we are in the car. Chuck, I just looked at the Nordstrom website and they do sell shirts like I described in various arm lengths, not all of them though, some are just neck. I thought that they were all neck/arm, but maybe the manufacturers are trying to save money. I haven't bought a dress shirt for my husband in years since the whole business casual thing took over. Anyhow, the prices are around $85+ which is a lot of money for a shirt, but if you buy one and have to pay to get it altered, then it might come out the same or maybe a little more. They do offer free shipping and free alterations. They also show you how to measure for the sleeve size. Here is the link for that http://about.nordstrom.com/help/find-your-fit/mens.asp#measure Good luck!!!

Im tempted but im not sure its really worth the money plus im afraid they would mess up my shirt. LOL.

Body for Life Forum Message by IndyGirl (49 posts) at 07:30 AM: omg...it's SNOW
You guys who are accustomed to this white stuff can laugh...my office is having loads of fun with it. But this morning was the first time I've ever driven in the snow. Yes...ever. I've driven once it was on the ground (although back home it was primarily ice). But I only had to do that once...last year. I've never drive with these large white flakes flying at my windshield. It was very disconcerting. Now...how do I get home??!!!?? IndyGirl

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (923 posts) at 07:41 AM:
It should be gone in a couple of hours. They only called for a few inches this morning. So, it will be fine by the time you drive home. Only in Indiana! Danielle

Welcome to my world, lol. Actually in NS on the Eastern Cnadian coast, no snow yet this year, but occaisionally we can get a real DUMP of the cursed stuff! Jan 2003 almost 100 cm in 24 hours, or as you may refer to it, that's about 3 feet of snow everywhere. Yours in Health, Kerry

I think in early 2003, Baltimore MD got a huge amount of snow too. My (now) boyfriend lived there at the time. We've only had a couple snowfalls so far this year and I'm already sick of it. Last January we moved into our new house during the biggest blizzard of the season. Absolutely ridiculus, but what are ya going to do? My dogs, on the other hand, think the stuff is awesome (until they get cold, which is fast!). They run around in it like it's a drug! Why on earth did my ancestors think Minnesota was a wonderful place to live?? If it weren't for our families living here, I think we would have moved somewhere warmer a long time ago. Oh well... I have a feeling I'm stuck here for life! Rene'

We got snow this morning too. On my way into work this morning, I was thinking of how cool snow used to be when I was a kid. Now....it's just a pain! Don't like driving in it, don't like playing in it, don't like looking at it unless I'm on my drive home (and people are actually DRIVING instead of BREAKING!) and I see the awesome hills and scenery covered in snow. But...I'd now appreciate just seeing pictures of snow now and be satisfied! Don't know if I'm just getting old, grumpy or both! lol Jennifer

I know about the driving and shoveling (I have cousins in Lunenberg Kerry!) but is is so pretty to look at, cleaner, softens the city noise, and fun to walk and play in.

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (1106 posts) at 07:56 AM:
I've been at a stand still for about 3 weeks.......I was reading my Shape magazine this morning (at 4 a.m.) and found a change up for my cardio, so I'm gonna try that and see if it kicks my matabolism into a higher gear. I think you just have to switch things up a bit to kick it in....might only take an adjustment to your diet, it might only take an adjustement to your workout......or it could take both.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 08:16 AM:
One of the best things you can do to break through a plateau is eat more for week. Add an extra 150-200 calorie snack in your eating plan for a week. Then continue as normal and see if that doesnt fix things.

Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (141 posts) at 08:21 AM:
ChuckdieseI99, has that approach worked for you? I will change up my cardio and my weight lifting. I think I might need to push myself more also. Thanks....

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 08:27 AM:
Yeah it has worked for me. What this approach does is sort of kick start your metabolism. When you are in a calorie deficit your metabolism slows down because its not getting the amount of food it needs to sustain your current weight. After a while, things stall out because your body is holding on to all it can because it thinks there is a famine and it needs to hold on to all it can to survive. Your body is not smart enough to know your doing this on purpose. Our bodies have gone though thousands of years of evolution where we have had food shortages. Our bodies have had to adapt to react this way or else we all would have gone extinct. If youre worried about gaining weight, 150-200 calories for 6 days is only 1200 calores at most. This equals roughly 1/3 of a pound.

Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (141 posts) at 08:43 AM:
Ok, then I'll try it. Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 08:49 AM:
Dealing with plateaus can be a very individual thing. You might have to do this multiple times until you get to your goal. Extra cardio can do the trick too but my experience is that most people dont eat enough. Doing extra cardio when your calories are really low to begin with is a bad idea.

Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (141 posts) at 10:38 AM:
I'm sure I am not eatting enough, which is weird because before I'd eat too much! I don't seem to be as hungry or not enough time to fix something. I need to pay more attention to my eatting habits.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 10:42 AM:
When you add the extra 200 calories in your meal plan spread it out over 2 or 3 meals. If you are hungrier than normal after a larger meal you are probably not eating enough. This is one way to tell without actually counting calories, although I suggest you start to do that if youre not already.

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (552 posts) at 11:05 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by TracyJeffries (Self-Removed Member) (1294 posts) at 10:03 AM:
it usually takes me the whole minute to recover so I can go heavier with the weight. I started using Chris Cary's CD and it helped me stay focused as well.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (638 posts) at 10:04 AM:
Its a trade-off. Less time between sets means you have to lift lighter weights. More time and you can lift heavier weights. Do what works best for you and gets you to your goals.

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (420 posts) at 10:20 AM:
I have actually found if I don't wait the full minute, I can lift the same or higher weights. Something about the adrenaline for me I think. When I wait the full minute, I lose my steam I think. But obvously everyone should do whatever makes them feel the strongest and have the best workout.

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (24 posts) at 10:28 AM:
It may also be helpful to vary the length of your rest periods from time to time. Always rest for at least 45 seconds between sets (except when you're intentionally doing back-to-back compound sets to exhaust the muscle). The shorter and heavier the set, the longer you should rest. Longer recovery (up to 3 minutes) allows you to use heavier weight and more tension per set, while shorter recovery forces the muscles to improve their glycogen storage ability. Ideally, you should include both -Dr. Hussman

It takes about a minute for ATP to almost fully regenerate, in order for your muscles to give full effort to the next set. Your muscles generate force by breaking a phosphate molecule from ATP, converting it to ADP. Make sure you use that minute to allow that ADP to turn back into ATP, so that you can create energy by breaking it back apart into ADP again.

Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (30 posts) at 12:59 PM:
TC, your post got me thinking. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm no expert on this stuff, but just curious. Is it the ATP that needs to fully regenerate, or the CP in the muscles? I always thought the converting of ADP back into ATP was going on constantly regardless of which energy system you're using, but it's the fuel for the ATP-CP system that needs to regenerate???

Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (583 posts) at 01:24 PM:
I have a one minute loop in the gym that I walk between each set. I must look like a caged animal rounding those corners day after day! But I crank the music and walk to the beat of the tunes. Focus on getting one more rep than you feel you can. The last 15 steps of the walk are rapid and focused upon getting prepared to do the next set. If I fail to wait the full minute my reps fall off quickly.

But when the holiday season kicks in there is considerably less traffic for many obvious reasons. BUT...the good news! As I am sure everyone here knows, as we get closer to the New Year we will hear from all of our old buds from the past and meet MANY new ones! So don't feel lonely sweetie. This may sound silly to you, but, go get a professional deep tissue massage. If there are any kinked muscles pinching nerves, or any vertebra out of alignement, it will help them slip right back into place. Opt for massage over chriropracter. My reason for saying that. When A chriropracter adjusts your spine, and your bone pops back into place. The same muscle that's in spasm will pull it back out again later on, then you will return again, and continue through that same cycle of paying for their BMW. With massage therapy, the muscle that's in spasm will be released from spasm and will no longer pull your vertebra out of alignment. Your muscles are responsible for lots of things. another example. If you have a sore back between your shoulder blades. My guess is you hunch over your desk. Because of this, your pecs atrophy, and your back tries to correct this, causing pain and spasms between your shoulders. If you stand in a doorway and stretch your pecs, you can relieve your back pain. (provided that's the problem) all depends on what you're doing with your muscles. But a Massage Therapist can help!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by CoachMike (19 posts) at 07:19 AM:
The tests you are going to take will tell you if you have any leasions on your brain or spinal column (indicators of MS). If these are negative, I would see a rhuematologist and ask about Fibromyalgia. My wife tested negative for MS and 2 years later was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. The burning you mention is a main symptom of this disease. She also had debilitating back pain, but there was nothing wrong with her spine. She is taking nuerontin. I don't know much about MS....BUT....my mother went through this extreme type pain this time last year. Her turns out to be Rheumatoid Arthritis. The pain she described was bone bone and joint pain, but VERY sensitive to the touch. She had to go through all the test....including MS, and several others, but they did eventually figure it out and she is a on a medication regime now. Don't be discouraged about Dr's. Sometimes they really just don't know what the problem is and looking you over physically may not help them figure it out any. Medicine is not an exact science. This is why I hate going to them in the first place! You are in my prayers. Hang in there. Teresa ps. that massage idea sounds great. It helped Mom alot with her pain. She would have one every 2 weeks for 4 months following her diagnosis.

did your doctor warn you against working out so soon after a miscarriage? I had a miscarriage in late July and I couldn't work out for a month..but that was largely due to the surgery and massive blood loss I had. I just wonder if you're pushing your body too hard too fast? Also as others suggested definately follow up with all the tests. Regardless of what the results are...you can still make amazing changes in your physical and mental self. Life is just obstacles on the road to success. If you want it bad enough it can be done regardless of anything else. Good luck, Stephanie

Got my results back from the MRI...everything looks good except a cyst in my sinus cavity (? still a bit confused). It should go away on its own they hope...I have another MRI in 4 weeks to check. Does not explain the pains in the legs and arms though. All bloodwork came back GREAT, even the diabetes check. I do have tenderness in the gallbadder area and with the family history (I am the only one with it still in), I will most likely have to have it out in the next few weeks. I decided to hit the chiropractor today. I have never been to one before and he took one look at my back (before xrays) and told me he was about 90% sure it was causing all the pains. It looks like a zig zagged mess right now. My pevis is so off that it is causing one of my legs to be 2 inches longer than the other. I barely have any range of motion in my upper back and neck area. So I am thinking it is all caused by my back being "off" quite bad. I go in tomorrow to set up some sort of treatment plan and to decide on what I can and should not do workout wise. Just kind of taylor it a bit. Right now I need to concentrate and my eating 100% and just keep jugging the water. I will add the workouts back as I can. (Pool here I come, lol!) I never knew a back/spine being off could cause such a mess in the rest of your body!?!? Thanks for all the well wishes. Hopefully I can get this gallbladder and back issue taken care of quickly. This last month has really sucked, hopefully it will just slowly get better for me now.

Just my 2 cents... I'm not a doctor, however, I am a diabetic and don't feel any burning sensation like you decribe. I hope the best for you. -Ed-

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (119 posts) at 07:23 PM:
I don't know how this could all be spinal related really. If it were one leg, and/or one arm, that can certainly be pinched nerves from "subluxations" as the chiros call them. I have a little trouble visualizing how all four could be affected. One thing for sure: If I ever need a chiropractor, I'm going to see Cheryl, averismommy. I don't know if my back will feel better, but just having an excuse to meet her would be worth the pain!

Body for Life Forum Message by Rushja (508 posts) at 10:29 PM:
Mike, I didn't think so either but in all honesty all bloodwork, tests, etc have come back perfectly normal. Now if you would see my range of motion with my back, pelvis, and neck you may be quite suprised. I can hardly move my neck to the sides, if I even slightly move my left leg out in front of me I get some nasty popping noises in my pelvis, if tip my head backwards I get electric shock type pains all the way down my back, etc. Right now a Dr said he can help relieve me of some of the pain....I'll take it! I knew I might have been in the right place when the questionaire (sp?) before the appt asked me if I had burning in my legs or arms! I seriously almost cried because when I told my regular family Dr this he seemed almost confused, like he didn't understand. I am still extremely hesitant but having a Dr understand fully the pain I am feeling is a step in the right direction for me. It can only help. I still have to go in for a few more tests with my family Dr so we shall see what he thinks in the end.

Body for Life Forum Message by sloth501 (82 posts) at 03:53 PM:
I used to hate cardio before BFL. I recently dug out my old Nordic Track skiier out of storage for my cardio workouts. I currently try to hit it for 20 to 30 minutes on my weight days and 45 to 60 minutes on my HIIT days.

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1432 posts) at 04:54 PM:
You should lift weights when glycogen stores are high-not depleted after a HIIT...it is more important to use the most energy when lifting weights for best results.

I went 2.4 miles during my tredmill HIIT today, and another .3 during cooldown. I then went 3 miles on the eliptical, and 5 on the bike. I've really been ramping up my cardio. push to burn off extra calories for the holiday season I guess.

I ran 3.3mls on the treadmill in 30min. I start at 5.8 and gradually get up to 7.8. Then I go back down to 5.8 and work my way up. It's a challenge but I love the high I get afterwards. I miss doing cardio every day.

Hot Body-- I didn't catch that with Matt and Suzy. I love this show. I would love to be a contestant. Really. I would love it. Except the bad weigh in outfits....otherwise, I would love it. They all rocked, except the one girl that didn't do a damn thing once she left the ranch. Stupid. Not ONE pound in the 6 months from leaving the ranch and the finale. Just so you know....they spent 12 weeks on the ranch (the 3 that made it to the end) and then they were home for FIVE MONTHS losing the rest on their own. So this wasn't about having trainers...yes, they got the skills and learned what to do....but they had to come home to normal lives and continue to workout and lose weight. This is why their transformation is really incredible. Matt, Seth and Suzy had a great base, but they continued on their own. And yes...Pete...180 pounds lost??? Man Alive! And his wife lost 70 pounds with him! Wow. They deserved to be congratulated in a BIG Way. The best part about the show....they were all FIT...muscular and lean. I don't remember this from last season. Yes, they lost weight and looked good....but each of them had some serious muscle definition...which we all know we like here. It was nice to see that the weight tranining and cardio routine continued and they are being taught BOTH aspects. Since they are that important. Maybe this was the reason for the change in percentage of weight loss? I don't know. It didn't seem all that fair to me, but I didn't put much thought into it either. ;) Love the show. Teresa

Body for Life Forum Message by Lovey75 (454 posts) at 07:45 AM:
You can probably find it on the website. He looked like he didn't stick with the diet after leaving. I probably wouldn't have wanted to come back when everyone else lost so much weight. I was pulling for Matt all along, but for some reason I wanted Seth to win on the finale. They all did great.

Thread: FEAR THINGS FIRST.. (155 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (226 posts) at 07:57 AM: FEAR THINGS FIRST..

Fear Things First..

That’s a darn good way to do things isn’t it? Oh sure, your mind and body might think otherwise, but it sure builds character.

Today is a good example.

I HATE the stair machine..kicks my arse every single frickin time. (I know I’m not actually swearing, but isn’t it good to know you could on here? LOL It’s like SIRIUS BFL!) Plans for my workout this morning did not include that machine, but after my weights I remembered another great slogan:

TAKE YOURSELF OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

So I got my butt up on that machine and did it! Yeah I was panting for air like a hound, but I did it!!!!!

A good friend posted this challenge on her blog a while back, but I’m going to re-post the challenge. If you haven’t already, do something today you fear first, and take yourself out of your comfort zone! Are you up for it?

..and if your workout is over, what did you do today to take yourself out of your comfort zone?

Body for Life Forum Message by zooman (345 posts) at 08:04 AM:
I got out of my comfort zone by getting up at 3a.m.lol. The second zone was getting on the recumbent and trying to burn 300 cals in 20 minutes. It took me 23 minutes though. I'll get in 20 minutes soon.

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (284 posts) at 08:13 AM:
Today I tried to see if I could run 3 miles in under 30 minutes...so I ran HIIT which normally brings me to 2.15 miles and then I just kept running and I did 3 miles in 27:20, I averaged 9 minute miles, and it really wasn't that hard. I bet after a good free day and some rest I could make 3 miles in 25 minutes!! It's so easy to just do the 20 minutes and then be done and usually I feel pretty good about what I accomplish in those 20 minutes, but after I push myself to see what I can really do, it's the most amazing feeling. I NEVER thought I could run this fast!!

Thanks for this post. I read it this morning and decided that when I went to do my Cardio at lunch, I would tackle the treadmill. I haven't ran much since I got injured during cross country in 7th grade. I decided to do my first HIIT set on the elliptical to make sure that I was fully warmed up. Then I hoped on the treadmill. Started the second set immediately at 3.5 which was a semi-fast walk. Moved to 3.8. Started jogging at 4.2. Full on running at 4.5. Highest Point at 4.8. Hindsight is 20/20 because I could have gone faster, but I didn't want to overdo it on my first goaround. So I think I will start doing one HIIT session on the treadmill per week. Spice things up. Make it interesting, to say the least. Thanks again for the post.

I clicked on Tools and went to Food Database so I could do my nutritional info for today's meals. I typed in oatmeal and it gave me 20 different kinds of cookies, babyfood, sweetened cereals, etc... I type in Quaker oatmeal and I get the same thing. It seems every time I look for something I can't just get the plain stuff- it's all processed foods (exactly what I stay away from). I have a protein counter at home and most of the things I buy have the nutritional information on them but I'm not home right now and I'd like to get this done before it gets too late in the day. Any suggestions for a better calorie/protein/carb counter online? Thanks!

I read the BFL book before starting my Challenge and one of the sections in the book really got to me "If you've developed a pattern of not honoring self-promises, and have done it often enough (me, me me!), your self-trust, your confidance-will fade away. Into that emptiness will seep uncertainty, anxiety and anger (oh, boy, been there, done that). It doesn't have to be like that, though. Keeping your promises unleashes enormous energy and potential. That emptiness created by self-deception will become filled with strengh, certainty and confidance." As I work through the program, I am discovering just how true this statement is. When you honor the promises to yourself, you will feel more positive and more confidant. Congratulations Wrecky! You're on your way now!

Body for Life Forum Message by Wrecky (70 posts) at 10:01 AM:
Im so silly reading your post made my eyes all watery (ya Im a suck lol). You know that part is so true. I am in the same boat...haven't honored self promises for years and years. Body for Life Forum Message by SweetThing (16 posts) at 10:51 AM:
And the best part is, the longer you stick with it, the more confidance and belief in yourself you will have. I broke promises to myself for years, too. I subscribe to E-diets newsletter, and this was their lead story today. The "Big Secret" to weight loss... Secret: If you want to change your body, you will have to change your life. Expanded Secret: If you want to significantly change your body, then you will have to significantly change your life. Sad Truth: If you are not willing to change, you will stay fat. Happy Truth: If you are breathing (still alive), you can change. It won’t be easy, but you can do it. Hope these words hit home with you ;P Marsha

Ok, here is my problem my brothers girl friend is I would guess 300+lbs. I had them over on Football day and I served healthy EFL foods and a couple of free foods since it was a free bee for me. (course this was about a month ago) She wouldn't touch my EFL chilli and I know she likes chilli but wouldn't touch it. See I slipped and said it was a healthy meal. She ate all of my Free food which is good on my part since I didn't have any. I saw them over thanksgiving and she has put on more weight. This isn't good!!!! I want to help her and I know by her seeing me loosing weight and gaining energy it might turn a light on but what could I say to her with out offending her. I want to buy her Body for life bood and the cook book but I know it will probulay offend her. Does anyone have any suggestions. This is such a sensitive situation.? Thanks, Dawn blondie26 yep true blonde.

You cannot get someone else to their "I am digusted with me point" Which is where most people who are severely overweight have to get. You can only accept her as she is, and love and care about the person she is now. One day when she gets there she will ask you how you did it or ask you for help. You will be able to tell when the opening is. We cant do this for other people no matter how much we want to. At least that is my .02 for what it is worth.

Cant do it. It would only ruin your friendship with her. Its obvious that shes doesnt care about herself if she wouldnt even try the chili. If she doesnt care you shouldnt worry yourself over it too much.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mickymacb (347 posts) at 02:52 PM:
I am guessing that her stubbornness is because she knows she has a weight problem, but probably doesn't have the self-esteem or self-control to do anything about it. And seeing you losing just makes her feel bigger. You just can't change some people's attitudes. Just keep doing what you are doing, and when she is ready she will come to you. Just treat her like anyone else, and she'll see that you genuinely care. Hope she comes around! Micky

The other day, I posted about starting my challenge this week, and came up with the idea of telling my students at school about, knowing they would hold me accountable. Here is what I did not count on...I had several students come up to me privately and ask me about the program I was using cause they wanted to lose weight. Way Cool! I haven't transformed squat yet, and already it's motivating my students. Man this is great. Most of them had never even heard of BFL or the term 12 week challenge. So it has truly been a great first week getting to share all this with my students. Remember.....No Excuses - Just Results. Brian

Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (108 posts) at 02:46 PM: Please, please help me with my mother-in-law
I recently got my mother-in-law interested in BFL and she desperately wants to do this. She has been expressing extreme frustration with the exercises and told me today she feels like crying over it. She can't believe this is so complicated. She really needs this and I don't want her to give up. I've offered to go over some of the exercises with her, I've told her to read the BFL book, use the journal, and come here for support. I've told her that I know a lot of people here must have been in her position at some time or another, and possibly some of you share her frustrations. If you could please give her some support and tell her where she can get help, and let her know what things you did when you were first starting out that helped you and kept you motivated, please share. I will direct her here to read what you have to say. She doesn't have a tracker profile or screenname yet so she can't post but I am encouraging her to join in. She comes to me a lot for support but obviously I'm starting the program younger and in better shape so perhaps she takes what I have to say with a grain of salt. Perhaps some words from ladies in their 50's who saw this program as quite a challenge in the beginning will be extremely motivational for her. Thank you all so much- I know this is just what she needs.
Hugs to you all!
Jennifer

Just my two cents here.... not everyone is ready or physically able to go into the BFL program head-on. I don't know what condition your MIL is in...but suggest that she just start slowly to get a feel for the weights and workout routine. Suggest the cardio 3 times a week...20 minutes only...and light weights 3 times per week...suggest she use machines since they help 'teach' one how to lift weights. BFL really is simple...its grasping the entire mindset of a healthy lifestyle that is complicated :) When one has lived their whole life 'dieting' or being overweight...changes such as BFL are very hard. Do your best to be a role model and be sure she knows she does not have to keep up with you...she must reach her own 10..not your 10... My own Mother started working out earlier this summer...no one was more surprised than me. We're talking an uptight accountant here...but she does her cardio and some weights..probably not strict BFL..but she is trying and it has made a difference..size 14 down to size 10...she's 56. Good luck! Stephanie

Jennifer The best advice I can give you is to help your mother-in-law as much as possible at first. I WISH my own parents would show even the slightest interest in trying to be healthy, but no.... So, if it would help you MIL and if you can spare the time, walk her through a weight session and help her figure out what weighst work for her. Walk her through the sheets where you fill in the exercise. It sounds like she's got the nutrition part down, but if not, walk her through that too. You can't do the program FOR her, but you can sure help her figure out the basics. You are so lucky to have a MIL who not only wants to be healthy, but also is will to come to her DIL for advice. (My MIL is pretty harsh and judgemental. I envy you!) Good luck to both you and your MIL!! Rene'

I really, really planned ( with Nancy Jane ) how we were going to do our first challenge. Read the book a few times, elminated bad foods from the house, replaced with good foods, researched as best I could with EAS for supplement choices and advice, Took photocopies from the BFL book to create progress journals. However, most important is the mental aspect and internal vision and committment. If one can get that down ( why they are doing it, and where they want it to take them ) then everything else will fall into place. Yours in Health, Kerry

Thread: Overwhelmed trying to figure out the exercise (136 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by diamondronna (1 posts) at 02:50 PM: Overwhelmed trying to figure out the exercise
Hi! I am new on the program and previously had a trainer with a group of 5 people. We went 3 days a week and did 30 minutes of cardio and then upper and lower for 30 minutes, finishing with AB crunches. I have a treadmill at home and have been doing 30 minutes of cardio. When I had a trainer he would change all the settings and tell me what to do so I didn't have to think. Now I am looking at all the exercises and on my own I am overwhelmed to the point of tears almost. I really don't want to go to the gym. I would loke to know what is a simple way to do this and am willing to buy what I need with reason. I have a treadmill, stepper, bike, 3,5 8 pound dumb bells, mat,an ab machine, the inexpensive kind that helps you do sit ups. i have bands but don't know how to use them. I look at all the exercises and freeze, don't know where to start and so I am immobile about it. I need to be told and shown do this with this weight and how may reps and for how long! Is there a simple way to approach this and be told what to get for my own home low cost gym with just what I have to have? I'm finding the exercise part very complicated! Thanks a bunch! diamondronna

It can be hard at first getting used to everything, but don't get discouraged! It will take a little time, but once you get all the moves down, you will be looking like a pro! :) I learned a lot from the animations on the bfl website. You can click on any exercise and it shows a little man doing it. here's the link... http://www.bodyforlife.com/exercise/animations.asp It shows a front view and a side view, so you can see how the exercise is done. Hope that helps you a little, it really helped me! HANG IN THERE - YOU CAN DO IT!!! :) Micky

I think what really cleared up the fog over the weights for me was using the workout logs that you can download off the BFL website. It tells you exactly what the exercises are, how may reps and sets to do, you just fill in the blanks. It really simplified it for me. THe BFL site also has exercise demonstrations of how to do them all. You can just use what you have for now to modify them, but I think you will have to add on to you weight collection gradually as you get stronger. You probably need 10 pound weights, but other than that you can get by with what you have. Hope that helped some! :) I know you can do this, I promise once you get the hang of it you'll be a pro!

Body for Life Forum Message by BFL4Stephanie (83 posts) at 03:00 PM:
Sounds like you have everything in place...you now need to develop a plan. The basic BFL program is cardio 3 times a week and weight training 3 times a week. Cardio should be easy to handle...get on the treadmill and flip through the settings until you reach manual and then choose a time..20 minutes..then choose your level/speed...say warmup for 2 minutes at 2.5mph and then speed up to 3 then to 3.2..you should be sweating and walking as fast as you are comfortable with. For weights...divide your workouts into upper and lower...for upper look at the exercises in the back of the book and write out a plan(or get the success journal where its all written out for you) ...this way you'll know what exercise to do..how many times...and so on....you must must plan your workouts so you don't waste your time. Lower body...do lunges/squats..use an exercise ball for crunches and butt...be creative...bands are good for upper/lower training for basic resistance. I would imagine you could do some searching on the internet for band exercises and find some.. You just have to start somewhere...and you don't have to do it perfectly..just do it...and slowly you will learn...sounds like you have a daughter-in-law who wants to help you. Hope that helps. Stephanie

I would HIGHLY recommend power blocks for weights. It is one set of dumbells that ranges from either 3-21lbs or another set that ranges from 5-45lbs. I for one work out at home due to childcare and use a treadmill, stepper and my power blocks. Don't get discouraged. You are already way ahead of most people who start an exercise program in that you have already had some experience. I found that the sheets that jamber was talking about really helped. Just go through the book and pick 2 exercises for each body part, write them down on the workout sheet and remember the first week is trial and success. Just start at a weight and you will try it and succeed, either at knowing it was the right one or succeed at knowing either to go up or down from there. Best of luck to you!! If you have any questions at all about maybe what exactly other people do just ask. We are all here for you!! Best of luck!! Shelly =)

Another great Web site that will give you video demonstrations of exercises is exrx.net. Start here specifically: http://exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html The right-hand side, "exercises," will give you many to choose from and organizes them by muscle group. I had experience lifting weights before I started BFL, but even then it took me about 2-3 weeks of practicing the routines before I felt comfortable. Don't worry about the timing so much (as in getting your weights done in 46 minutes) in the beginning, because it will likely take you longer as you're learning. And you'll get the hang of HIIT very quickly. Write down your plan (I used index cards), and if you deviate from the plan, make notes. Example for a treadmill, using levels instead of minutes: Level 5 (first 2 minutes): Walk 2.5 MPH Level 6: Walk 3.0 MPH Level 7: Walk 3.0 MPH, raise incline to 3% Level 8: Walk 3.5 MPH at 3% incline Level 9: Walk 4.0 MPH at 3% incline Back down to level 6 and repeat until minute #18, when you hit your level 10. Hope that helps! Don't be discouraged! Karenna

Hi, I did my first challenge right when I was turning 50 years old. I had never lifted weights and the only cardio I had done was 2 yrs. previously and I was just healing from injury from it :) No kidding! I completed the challenge and went from a size 12 to a 4/6. My teenage daughter couldn't believe what was happening to her mom. It isn't that hard if you just realize you will feel like an idiot the 1st couple of weeks while you are figuring out the weights. Get the Success Journal. Get a weight bench at least. And get some weights to start, knowing you can add to them as needed. Remember, women lift very low weights for upper body in the beginning. Like Starting with 1 or 2 lbs. and up to 5lbs for you 9 or may be 7lbs or 10lbs if it's a bigger muscle. I kept 1 lb. weights handy to add in my hand as needed if I could do a little more. Just start at day 1 with your weights, success journal and BFL book opened to the exercises. Go thru everything SLOWLY and write down which exercises you think you should do. If you find out later you made a mistake somewhere, who cares? Then start by following the book and the reps. The 1st couple of weeks you are just learning. You will be surprised how fast you will start to GET IT. Always use low weights until you are more confident. You will be amazed how much you will get out of this program! I'm back because I lost sight, stopped exercising 2 yrs. ago and gained 40 lbs. Grrrrrr. I am just finishing up my 1st challenge this year and will immediately start #2. Soooooo, now I'm 52 and can't wait to get back into all my cute clothes I've saved. Please feel free to PM me if I can be of any assistance. You CAN do it and you will never regret it. Rose

Hey Team, let's hold it together here now. No falling apart before the holidays! Katie, I know you're out there and checking. I'm sure you're doing great!

Still keeping with my promise to you and myself here is what I did yesterday (Wednesday). It was a good day to start and then in the afternoon things got a little hectic.

Water - 8 (2 Diet Coke)

Meal#1 - 4 egg whites, salsa, WWBread w/ a bit of IBINB
Meal #2 - Luna Bar
Meal#3 - Turkey Sandwich w/ FF May touch of horseradish and slice of Cheddar Cheese
Meal #4 - Noodles & Co. Shrimp Curry Sate

Cardio - Treadmill walking 20 minutes maxed at 4 mph at 9% incline

Still going strong today - my hubby's back so I need to keep it going with him around and I've told him so. My one hiccup so far is that I went to my Physical Therapist today for the first time in 3 weeks and I've been  having a ton of knee pain again. Turns out I have tendonitis in both knees. I can't to Lower Body or cardio with an incline till the beginning of next week . . . but that's okay, I want my knees working for the long haul.

Hope you're all doing well and hey, let us know your out there!

Laurie
