Thread: Muscle Recovery... (312 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (76 posts) at 05:58 AM:
You actually want to increase your muscle mass. That's what's going to make you look lean and toned. You are not going to start looking like Miss Olympia unless you are using steroids. :) So don't worry about getting too "big". Betagen is a core suppliment in my routine. Creatine and HMB are the ingredients. Creatine helps build muscle, and HMB helps with muscle recovery. I lift better and recover faster. If I was stuck on a desert island, Betagen would be the last thing I'd give up.

Body for Life Forum Message by Pan (16 posts) at 07:16 AM:
I religiously take L-Glutamine (EAS)5-10grams a day (1 or 2 tea spoons) Your soreness decreases dramatically.

Body for Life Forum Message by atidwell2 (5 posts) at 09:34 AM:
I have heard that creatine will make me gain 10-15 lbs in water weight. Is this true? I want my muscles to look toned and lean. I don't want to be overweight at all, whether is from fat or from muscle. Either way, your organs are only meant to support so much weight. Has any tried NO2?

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (76 posts) at 11:00 AM:
It may. But I've never, ever had a problem with Betagen. Besides, you know darned good and well you shouldn't be on the scale more than once a month. ;) Jokes aside, creatine works by pulling water into your muscles. This is a good thing, not a bad one. Any bloat should be temporary while your body adjusts. Remember, the goal here is long term muscle gain, not worrying about short term bloat. And if it happens, that's all it is. Short term. Make sure to drink your water before and after consuming creatine. Most people who report issues with creatine use have problems because of the dextrose that is typically mixed with creatine to help it metabolize correctly. This suppliment has been in use since the 1950s. If there's ANY suppliment that I consider safe, this is it.

I know what two jobs would probably make me really happy. I would either one day like to be a personal trainer or open my own aquatic pet store. As it is now, I am a computer programmer. Not a lot of fun unfortunately but it pays the bills.

So now I am teaching dance, acro, martial arts, fitness, whatever anyone will pay me to teach them! And I am TOTALLY happy. :) Kelli Oh yeah... I'm a lawyer, too.... but that's another story....

Hey Im not married either and I will gladly be amodellawyers sugar mama! Seriously though, when I was little I was just crazy...I wanted to be an Accountant, I didn't play with dolls or makeup, or play dress up...none of that. I set up things with price tags and wrote them down (Item, description, qty and price) on a columnar pad...and sit with my moms 10 key all day adding numbers....So guess what that is what I have done for the past 15 years! Loser! So now that I am grown up I want to be a sexy super-hero that kicks ass for a living...like AeonFlux! Im gonna do it too...don't try to crush my dreams!

I wanted to be a cowgirl when I was very young. Then a veterinarian, which followed me up until a few years ago (though I didn't study for it in college). I applied to be a police officer in college (failed the physical agility test). I started college pre-physical therapy, then switched to English, which is how I graduated. Now, I want to study something in the medical field. Nursing is appealing because it's a cut-and-dry education path, but I'm not sure whether I'm cut out to be a nurse. Can I get paid to just study medical stuff? Is that a job? Since college, all my jobs have been in journalism: editing copy/writing headlines for newspapers. I do that now part-time, but that path is coming to an end because my husband is also a journalist and is climbing his way toward a future as a newspaper editor. I couldn't work under him in that capacity. As it stands, he's already technically my boss right now. I'd like to write articles/essays for magazines, especially stories about people who have struggled through great ordeals. But I haven't a clue where to start.

If I could do everything over again I think I'd be an architect. I was afraid to do it in school becasue I was concerned that I'd run out of ideas. But now I see that most architects projects all look the same. You know how you can always spot a Frank LLoyd Wright building? Or is that just a midwest thing? Right now I'm an attorney working for a bank, but the law degree will open a lot of doors for me if I want it to. I just have to decide what to do with my life. Personal trainer would be col, but I don't know how well I could motivate people. Oh well, I guess I still have plenty of time to figure things out. Still holding out for that suger mama. That way I can do whatever I want and not worry about the paycheck.

I started out wanting to be in broadcast journalism. I wanted to be the next Barbara Walters. Then, I got pregnant w/my son in high school so decided nursing was easier and would allow me more time w/him. After a stint as a hospital volunteer, decided I'm not compasionate enough (sick people can be VERY demanding!) so moved on to office mgmt/finance.
,br> It pays the bills but now after my acting debut in a local play recently, I want to do more theater AND...yes, I would LOVE LOVE to be a personal trainer too!

I don't wanna grow up, cause if I did, I wouldn't be a Toys R Us kid. LOL I still haven't quite figured out what I want to be. I wanted to be a nurse or a doctor, but I don't like math so now I'm going into law. However, I'm an EMT, a firefighter, getting my certification to be a fitness instructor/personal trainer, getting my coaching cert. to coach volleyball...the list goes on and on with me. I just want to do it all! Hopefully soon I'll decide what I want to be when I grow up. Crystal

That's funny.  I was a math major in college (so obviously I like Math), but I didn't want to teach (what else can you do with a math major), but that's the reason that I went into law.  Law school is much like math class.  It takes the same analytical and critcal thinking skills that math does.  I just found it humorous that we ended up on the same path comign from polar opposite directions.  Good luck to you, Fitchic

Judd's poor sportsmanship really irritated me, I bet they are all glad he is gone after the way he behaved. I mean, almost all of the people who get voted out have something positive to say at the end. I don't even think they should worry about him being on the jury, they all know what kind of person they are dealing with. Anyhow, I think Lydia will be the next one if she doesn't win immunity.

Pseudo, I am so glad you sat down and talked with your husband. It is hard to say what you want sometimes, but once you get it all out, you can begin repairing and rebuilding. I am happy you stuck with it, part of the problem might be that your husband just hasn't figured out how out of shape he is. My DH married me fat, and it wasn't until 3 years later that I realised I really needed to do something about my body!! I lost 35 lbs, then got preggo, and now here I am a year later finishing up those last 10 lbs to get back to where I was. I thank God he saw the skinny girl within me!! Now I just need my body to catch up again. You are in my thoughts, hope you two get things worked out. :) Micky

Darby I couldn't agree more!! I was actually just going to post that. My husband and I were/are going through our own situtation right now and I decided counseling might help me. My counselor suggested that book and I can't even tell you how much sense that book makes. Now if I can just get my husband to read it, we might actually be able to fix our situation. Marriage most certainly is a two way street and it is one that seems to be filled with potholes and road blocks at times. I have wanted to jump ship and take another road at times, but I'm still here and that's all I can say at the moment. I'm really not sure I ever want to be married. It seems like a lot of work. I wouldn't want to "try" and "work" at a relationship. Is this why I'm still single? I would rather just break up with someone when I become bored, or problems start. Tell me, is it really worth it in the end?

Ok ok, like the one i started on where does everyone live and why, I have another one to shoot out at you. Who are the few profiles on this site only, that inspire you? and why? Mine are Tai-Kee, IndyGirl, MegansMom, why because they are similar in my height and I really feel the determination that they have for doing the challenges. I cant wait to get to that point in my challenge on this life changing journey, to get to where they once were, but have now already accomplished in my eyes.!

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (305 posts) at 01:54 AM:
I'm gonna have to go with Tracy Jeffries. She always has kind, inspiring things to say and is willing to help whoever. She is just so upbeat and positive, you can't go wrong modeling yourself after a transformation like hers. I'll be lucky to emulate her...

Body for Life Forum Message by tonee (97 posts) at 02:19 AM:
While everyone on tracker inspires me with their determination, there are 4 profiles that really keep me working. Dana D, Get Her Done, WeCanDoIt, and Evielee.

When I first started BFL and heard of the tracker, the first thing I looked for were women who was similar in height and weight to myself. I found these 4 amazing women who has accomplished so much and still continue on.

Everytime I feel like giving up those are the profiles I always return to.

Thank you ladies for sharing your journies.

Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (35 posts) at 04:47 AM:
There are so many great people with amazing transformations on this site!!! But when I'm needing inspiration, the profiles I look at to remind me "this is possible", "I CAN do it" and "DAMN I want to look like that!!!" are Evielee, nheyrman, averismommy, and Go4Steffie. If you get a chance I'd recommend checking out the blogs for all of them (cheryl and nicole on BFL site) - their words are as inspirational as their photos! Actually I borrowed some inspiration from Evielee this morning during HIIT when I thought I couldn't make it through the last two minutes - I was seriously struggling. So I said to myself that there are just two more minutes in this entire day that I'm going to have to dedicate to cardio so I'd better make the most of it, so I pushed on through and kicked-butt!!

What inspires and motivates me are those that I communicate with to help and encourage because they are struggling and need support....thier willingness to reach out for help and the fact that they count on me and are motivated by me makes me want to do the best I can. So many out there are dealing with incredible stress and life changes and fighting through it, trying to maintain even through death, loss, divorce, financial stress....it makes me appreciate my life all that much more and realize I have no excuse to slack off...if they can do it so can I.....Julie Witt is my biggest inspiration....I don't communicate with her one on one...but if she can do it...I have no excuse...do you?

The reason I started this program was KMachate. He posted a link to his transformation on another website and I was hooked ever since I saw his pictures. I started BFL less than a week later. I just hope I can do the same as he has. Not that Kevin really needs the ego boost but there it is.

I can't single any on tracker out. Tons of people inspire me in many different ways here ;) However, one thing I didn't see others mention, without being conceited, is that "I inspire myself" This is a big part of it for me. The ability to contanstly test myself to reach new bests. Yes, the folks here certainly offer advice, support, knowledge AND inspiration, and it is all good and much appreciated, and I can get great value from the tracker folks. But at the end of the day.... it is what I must choose to do with all of that. :) Yours in Inspired Health, Kerry

Oh goodness, I have many..but some for different reasons... When I first came on here I was looking for women of my height, and that started at similar places as myself..and on that note, I was blown away with Linne and Tai-Kee's profiles. Then I had 2 more that were a bit taller than me, but I admired all that they'd done, and I was looking for just and ounce of their drive and determination and success as well...this was G04Steffie, cfingram, T~N~T and Woman1069, then in comes nheyrman. Then along the way I bump into so many more inspirational people with their encouragement, advise, own achievements, etc. These people were pretty close to the same place in their own transformations as I, so it helped to know these people were right there along side me..... SweetEmotion, Cookie1135, Karla, Miss Fit, and SuperGirl Then some just because their words hit home with me: DanaD and GetNFit All of these people, and many more have inspired the heck out of me, and I seem to run across new ones every week! It's just amazing! Jennifer

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (76 posts) at 04:23 AM: Insomnia Sucks
Argh! I've been awake since 3am. I hate insomnia. I hate it when your mind is racing so much that it just pulls you out of the land of nod. Plus side, my workout is done for the day. Shoulders, back and abs. And I still have time to catch a nap before work if I'm so inclined. But it still messes things up for the rest of the week. Stoopid not being able to sleep.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (205 posts) at 09:07 AM:
Whats going on? Do you work out at night? That can mess you up. Or taking supplements like Thermodynamx too late? What works for me is some yoga techniques, lay in bed close your eyes, lay on your back and taking deep breaths in and out, nice and slow, count backwards, starting at 50 and only count on the inhale till you reach 25 then count on inhale and exhale...I am lucky if I ever reach 25 though! Good luck! I hope you get to sleep tonight! I know I CRY if I can't sleep!

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (76 posts) at 09:22 AM:
I was up until 7am, then finally cauught 3 hours of sleep. Not a perfect solution but I did get 8 hours of sleep. I just have too many thoughts working in my back brain at the moment. Need to wait for my head to stop processing whatever it is that it needed to process. :)

Don't you just hate that feeling! Just lying there watching the clock. I take Benadryl sometimes when I can't sleep or Melatonin from the health food store, it works wonders. I also bought some lavender stuff from Burt's Bees that seems to work pretty good.

I rush around all day, and it's seems like I don't have time to think. When I get in the bed at night, my body wants to quit, but my mind won't. Hate it!

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (560 posts) at 05:37 PM:
Yeah it sucks all right! I've had problems with it since I was a teenager! This week has been really bad, only getting about 3 hours asleep a night. I try, try and try..can lay in bed for 4-5 hours till I finally fall asleep. I finally nod off between 2-3am, and most times end up oversleeping (I have to get up at 5:30). I usually have to make it up over the weekend. I don't seem to have a problem sleeping late though. And I am fine once I am asleep. It's just falling asleep that's the problem! I definitely agree with you. It just sucks! Jennifer

Okay, so I haven't been following BFL lately. The funny thing is, I really don't feel guilty. I decided to put all my effort into quitting smoking, which I have managed to do! It's only been 5 days now, but that is a lifetime for me to go without cigarettes. I don't think I've ever gone more than 2 hours without a cigarette in the past 12 years. Anyway, I really feel if I can do this, I can accomplish anything! I'm going to give it another week and then start BFL again.

That is awesome!! Are you doing anything to help you through these next few days? I smoked on and off for the past 17 years, approximately 13 years worth of smoking, only quitting for pregnancies and whims. I had my last cig on Oct 23rd of this year and I used a self hypnosis CD that I bought thinking it was a waste of money. I had stopped smoking EVERY Monday morning for the past year and a half, only to start again before lunch on Monday. I can honestly tell you that the first morning after going to sleep with the CD on I had NO cravings and NO withdrawals. Did the CD work? I don't know, but I'm just glad something finally did. Keep it up and feel free to PM me with any questions or just for support from someone right there with you.

I wish everyday could be this GREAT!!

I started off at the gym, had a perfect hiit 10's Cardio and then did more, then did my lower body workout, I was really into it today.

Then the owner came and asked for my permission to put my pic on the Athletic Club's website and asked me to ride in the Christmas Parade supporting the GYM.

Then I showered and went Christmas shopping and found everything I was going for, that was unbelievable right there.

Then I came home and see that I am listed # 1 on the top 20 list for this month.

This has been a GREAT DAY!!!

First Watch, which is a breakfast and lunch place has a few items which are BFL friendly. I had the power wrap today, 3 egg whites with veggies in a sun dried tomato tortilla, it was really good and I didn't feel at all guilty about eating it. Body for Life Forum Message by nutz (91 posts) at 08:29 AM: Dips!

My new routine calls for dips, but I wasn't very optimistic about how effective they would be for working my chest and shoulders.  I WAS WRONG!

They hit my chest, tri's and shoulders like a bomb went off in there.  I had to do assisted dips since I could only manage about 5 before my elbows started to hurt.  I can't wait until I can hang some weights off my waiste.

What is a dip?

Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (326 posts) at 11:15 AM:
Dips are great, however you really have to watch your form when doing these or you could easily hurt your shoulder. I can't do many of them because of a previous shoulder injury, but each time, I try to do a couple more than I did the last time. Jame, have you heard of tricep bench dips? Like a backward pushup. You sit on a bench and put your legs out in front of you. Slide off of the bench, keeping 1/2 in to an inch between your back and the bench. Hands on each side of you. You can bend your knees and put your feet at a 90 degree angle if you're new to them to make them easier. Then, bend at your elbows like you're doing a pushup. Really works the triceps good. I know this shows for females, but check out this site. It shows how to do the moves using video clips. Just click on the body part you want to work and you'll get a list of exercises for that part. Click on the exercise and it shows you how to do it. http://exrx.net/Lists/WtFemale.html

Hello, Blondie26. Good for you! See if your gym has one of those pull-up/dip assist combo machines. )Hanging dips can be more difficult than bench dips 'cause you are supporting ALL of you body weight.) If no such machine exists at your gym, and the full-body-weight dips are really difficult, you can simply just do as many as you can do or you can "cheat" by using one of your legs as support on the foot rest. I've done that in the past. If you've never done dips, over the weekend, if you want to get an idea of how they feel, stand between two kitchen chairs back-to-back put your hands on the back rests like your gonna do a dip. Then with your feet on the ground for support, slowly lower yourself down and back up trying to use your legs a little a safely practical. Also, make sure the chairs won't slide apart or you'll be quickly discovering what an iron cross feels like ;).

Ok my 2 cents as well!!! Chiropractors have come a long way in the past 10 years. I am not married to or related to any so it is not an opinion based on that. I know for a fact that 2 doctors prepared my father for shoulder surgery and a chiropractor fixed the 2 year pain in 4 sessions and the surgery was cancelled. My dear friend had her child adjusted and ear infections halted immediately. These days it is proven that the pressure on any given part of the spine can throw off circulation, muscle use, nerve pressure, equilibrium, etc. It is worth a shot in my opinion. I was adjusted several years ago after a series of small car accidents and am still amazed at the results with no medication (not that I am against medication). :) Good Luck to you.

Yes you can do them together. I asked her that. But you have to be starting the BFL challenge at the same time....I think. Meaning you can't have a jump start on the BFL challenge, like be in week6. Actually not positive on that one. You can contact her for the official answer. She emails back and seems very nice! Stef :-)

I thought about that too Ashtrash. The way I understand it is as long as the stats you submit are for your Meltdown start date (or a coule of days before), then you're okay. Obviously you can't submit today's stats, start BFL, then jump into the Meltdown in January using today's stats. But if you start BFL but give her your stats on 01/02/06, then the changes will only be during the Meltdown challenge time period and you're not cheating. Make sense or am I just babbeling? I'm going to email her to confirm that. she is VERY nice and responds quickly. IndyGirl

Today I'm invited to a Christmas party and a birthday party, so instead of taking nap after lunch (I've been up early with the baby) I'm going to do my LBWO while the rest of my family is snoozing and I will say `no thanks' to the birthday cake and Christmas cookies (ooh that's going to be hard, but I will do it!!). Thanks for all the help. My son's daycare owner called this morning and we got to talking about working out and eating healthy. She has a goal date for May of 2006. I'm going to buy her Body for life book. She has seen me from the time I gave birth to know and she says she can't believe the weight I lost. =) I wish I could feel the same about myself. I'm so excited about buying her the book. On my lunch break I'm going out to buy it for her. I'm screaming with excitement on the inside. Am I sick or something. or just crazy. LOL. =) At least I'm able to help someone.

I remember when I was first starting my challenge that the first week to two weeks I went through major times of hunger as my body settled into a new eating routine. Make sure you're eating enough because your body needs fuel, especially with the high intensity exercise you should be doing, but give it a little more time too, as your body adapts to a new lifestyle :) Ang

Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (35 posts) at 01:32 AM:
I'm in my third week and am finding the same thing. What seems to be helping me is having a big drink of water, just to check it is actually hunger not thirst, and if still hungry half an hour later I'm having a small amount of protein and an apple. I'm cooking up some chicken every now and again and keeping it cold in the fridge for these emergency snacks. Also, are you getting protein in your salad at lunch? Something else to try is adding a very small amount of fat to meals - this can really help with hunger. I add a few pine nuts or a little avocado to salads, and have 4 or 5 cashews with one couple of my apple/chicken snacks.

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (130 posts) at 04:33 AM:
Im with ashtrash, add lots of veggies. I usually eat anywhere from 1-2cups of steamed veggies with seasonings on them with my normal meal. And Im not so sure about your protein shake, but does it have any carbs in it? You may not be making a full meal there...I dont know, just a thought:) Hope it helps! Crystal

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (76 posts) at 05:09 AM:
Your answer is right there. You have a salad. You need a balance of protien and carbs. Add tuna or chicken to said salad and a nice carb. Remember salad greens have no calorie bulk to speak of. You need fuel! Bottom line, I don't see enough carb in your meal plan based on the information you provide. You need some carb with your protien shake, and definatley need it with your lunch. And breakfast. See the pattern here. :) Carbs are not the enemy. Oatmeal, baked sweet potato, whole wheat tortillas. All good additions.

I agree, protein makes you feel more full than other sources of calories. You definetly need to consume all of the portions. Also try drinking more water, this stops my cravings. Maybe through a banana or some other fruit in your shake. Good luck.

One thing that I do is log my food into www.fitday.com, which is free. The website calculates my calories, fat, carbs, and protein for the day. I can also print reports that tell me if I am meeting my custom nutrition goals. My goals are the number of calories that I need to consume based on my activity level, weight, etc. I got the formula for this out of a great book called Sports Nutrition, but I am sure that you could get it somewhere else. Anyway, each day I can see how many calories I have eaten. Usually the days that I get hungry in the afternoon and want to eat everything in site are the days that I didn't have enough calories. Hope this helps.

I went through the same thing on my last challenge and I am sure I will do it again, even though I have been eating pretty clean. A good balance is important since your trying to give your self a calorie deficit, but not starve. Check your portions and your amounts of protein, carbs and fat at Every Meal. Last time I checked, a Whey Shake by itself does not a meal make. Nor does a salad by itself, unless it has some protein and carbs in it. Good Luck! Joe

Thread: Caught in a tailspin? (114 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1627 posts) at 01:44 AM: Caught in a tailspin?
Hi gang! I’m just starting to get back on track after having my BFL program sidetracked for several weeks. Some of my tailspin could probably have been offset with better planning, but most of it was due to being sick. After 10 years of chronic illness, I guess I'm getting pretty good at pulling out of a tailspin… I thought I’d share some of what I’ve learned and what I do to recover from such setbacks in not only my BFL program, but life in general. My guess is that quite a few of my BFL buddies are also facing a similar challenge of trying to get back on track. Take inventory of what you’re feeling and thinking. I truly believe that most people spend day after day of their lives feeling uncomfortable with what's going on in their minds and hearts. They know something's not quite right, but they're not sure what it is. Their heart, mind, body and soul are sending messages to them that something needs a little tender-loving-care… But the approach I see most people take is to just to try to stay distracted with diversions or anything they can to ignore all the churning going on inside. Such an approach commonly leads to overindulgence, drinking and other disempowering and limiting behaviors. That's why I've learned, that it is very important to set time aside for yourself - to do your own “homework“ about what's going on inside. I guarantee if you take even just a few minutes a day to work through those issues, staying on track with a program like Body-for-Life will be far easier than it would be otherwise... Manage your mood or your mood will manage you… The natural tendency for most people is to live in a reactive state. As a result, they become puppets of their environment and circumstances. But to stay the course through thick and thin, requires that a person be pro-active. In a nutshell, if you don't manage your mood and emotional state, it will manage you… Among other things, your mood is driven by what you focus on and the questions you ask yourself. I'm not going to go into detail here, but hopefully you get the idea … If your beliefs are disempowering you, no pep talk can overcome that… We all benefit from having support and encouragement from others, but if your underlying beliefs are holding you back, then even the best support system can't guarantee that you will be successful. Often, when we have suffered a setback our beliefs have taken a hit as well. Instead of believing that we are going to achieve our goals, our beliefs often have shifted towards having a great deal of doubt. In my experience, just being aware of what those disempowering beliefs are will make it clear how absurd they are and lead you to make the proper adjustment... Focus on the solution not the problem… It is so easy to get consumed by a problem and find yourself feeling overwhelmed and overstressed – and you haven't even made any progress solving it. Certainly, it's important to validate how you feel, but do you really want to pay any more of a price emotionally than you already are? I find it's very helpful to just keep asking yourself. Okay, what's the solution? Ask yourself “What do I want to believe about this situation?” This question helps you step back and take a look at the big picture. Every time I ask this question, it gives me a sense of empowerment and provides a great deal of clarity about what's really happening in my life. It's surprising how this question almost always puts me in a great mood, and boosts my confidence that everything is going to work out just fine after all... Motion creates emotion. Often, when you've gone through a setback, you are tempted to wait until you're in the “right” mood before you attempt to get rolling again... Unfortunately, waiting for your mood to improve is a failing strategy. No matter how down or discouraged you may be, there is no doubt that even a short workout will improve your mood tremendously... Raise your standards. Whenever a person goes through disappointment, it is very tempting to lower your standards to avoid being disappointed again. As good as that logic sounds, lowering your standards only lowers your enthusiasm… There is no inspiration in coming up short of what you really wanted. Setting a so-called more realistic standard may be easier to achieve, but no doubt will be much harder to live with... Trust me, the moment you raise your standards, you will feel more excitement about your program and your life... Review your goals and make sure that they inspire you. I repeatedly hear how important it is to set realistic goals. The problem with that approach is that the focus is on avoiding disappointment rather than inspiring you to succeed... I suggest that you learn how to accept occasional disappointment and set goals that excite you – even if they seem unrealistic. For me, I'd rather dream and risk being disappointed, than not dream and guarantee it... Ask yourself “What could I do right now and in the next day or so that would give me a boost in confidence?” One of the best things you can do to get out of a tailspin is to do something that helps gives you your spark back. That could be as simple as just heading to the gym. The key thing is just ask yourself what you could do right away to help you get back on track. Ask yourself “Why am I sure that I’ll get back on track shortly? “ This is one of those questions that tends to take you from a disempowered state to one where you feel confident again. It presupposes that you're going to pull out of this tailspin immediately and be back to making great progress once again. It's a great way to punch through doubt and get your excitement back... Just Show Up! This is one principle that I need to constantly remind myself of. Even when you just don't feel like working out or if you feel there's no way you’re even up to it, make it a point to just show up. Tell yourself that you will only work out for five minutes and then if you still don't feel like it, you can go home. Almost without exception, you'll find that that first five minutes overcomes that less than empowering mood that otherwise would have derailed your workout … Think of your life as a movie and you as the scriptwriter. How can you make your movie inspiring and exciting? What can I say? This is your life! In some ways it is like a movie. Although no one has ultimate control over their circumstances or their destiny, they do have a lot of input on how the script of their life is written. So why not write the most thrilling and exciting script that you can imagine? It doesn't really matter what really happened in the past... Everybody loves a great comeback and an inspiring story... Why not let that be the legacy you create... I hope this gives you some ideas and confidence that you have a lot of power to pull yourself out of the tailspins of life... It's only inevitable that when you choose to fly high that you risk stalling and going into a dive. But if you're confident that you have the skills to pilot your way out of any setback, wouldn't you rather soar with the eagles than settle for a body and a life that's far below what you really wanted? Of course you would... Jim

I have been struggling to get back on track for weeks and I keep waiting for that moment when I truly beleive I can do this but that has not happened. i have been very down and depressed with some personal things that have been going on and my well being is not priority to me when I feel bad about so many things. I sat down at work today and like many other days thought to myself "her I am" lets just get through the day. I'm tired and disgussed and my clothing are tight and that has truly disgussed me! Then I thought I would check the tracker for some insight for the day! WOW, I can't tell you how important your entry was to me today. Thread: Diabetes and BFL (58 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by cerdes (2 posts) at 05:35 AM: Diabetes and BFL
Hi all. I'm on day five of BFL and boy, am I sore! I have diabetes and was wondering if there were any other diabetics out there who have or are doing BfL. Have you had any problems with your blood sugar after HIIT? I've had to change my insulin doses around a bit to make sure I don't get too low. More importantly, how's the food working out?? I find it very difficult to lose weight unless I cut out carbs quite significantly. Should I press on with BFL eating plan to a tee, or should I lower my carbs to about 50-60g per day? I don't want to lose muscle doing so, but I sure do want to lose the fat!! Obviously non-diabetics might have answers to my questions also!! Let me know :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (7 posts) at 06:22 AM:
Hello Cerdes, I'm sure I won't help much, but... I'm a diabetic, however, I'm not insulin dependant, and control my blood sugars with diet alone. I was diagnosed around 4 years ago, when my weight was a horrible 252 lbs and my blood sugars were spiking up past 270 and before BFL I slowly worked my weight down to about 240 and watched my after that point I watched my sugar levels closly and haven't had ANY sugar problems since... Makes me think that it was my body's way of telling me that I need to do something before other, more serious, health issues come my way. I understand that being insulin dependent, you are in a different catagory then me and I wish you all the luck with BFL. I'm looking forward to seeing your transformation. Incidently, I haven't had any problems with blood suger levels after starting BFL 5 weeks ago. Keep in contact and let me know how you are doing with your diabetes... -Ed-

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (837 posts) at 07:19 AM:
With diabetes, exercise and illness can wreak havoc with your insulin doses. We got a lot of diabetic teaching during nursing school, partly due to the fact one of my instructors had diabetes. Exercise will decrease your need for insulin, wherease illness can increase it. I'm not going to go into the metabolic reactions that are responsible for this, but just be aware of it. Also, hormones can also play a big role. We had a young patient the other day come in with blood sugars of upwards of 1200. She was 12 and more than likely, her sugars were all out of whack due to the change in her hormones. Her parents and her keep her sugars very well controlled and were very knowledgable about the disease. She wasn't one of these non-compliant patients we see most of the time. The endocrinologist explained they they may need to revisit her insulin schedule, type, and doseage due the change in her hormone levels. Melanie = )

I don't know a great deal about diabetes but it may be encouraging to know that the BFL 2000 Grand Master Champion has diabetes. His transformation pic epitomized the physique that I was hoping to achieve. Here's the excerpt from www.bodyforlife.com: Rory Palazzo from Colorado — This 29-year-old business analyst from Colorado gained better control of his Type-1 diabetic condition through his Challenge. He reduced his insulin doses by more than 50%, while losing 21 lbs. of fat and gaining 9 lbs. of muscle in only 12 weeks. Rory has never felt better physically or mentally, he feels sharper and more poised in his job and has more energy than ever before. "I feel as if my whole life has been enabled and the best part is that I have only begun to improve!"

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (121 posts) at 11:52 AM:
At least early on you'll probably need to keep carbs pretty managable, and if the 50 to 60 g range is the area where you were able to lose weight that might work for you. Otherwise the BFL diet is near perfect for a diabetic, the 6 small meals spread out during the day. You'll certainly want to be sure you get plenty of fiber, and taking in carbs in high fiber form is certainly an option as well. As you get fit and put on lean muscle, which I really hope is a goal as well, then you'll find your ability to lose fat/weight will come along and that you'll be gradually able to increase the amount of low glycemic carbs as that happens.

I couldn't believe I was in the top 20 yesterday...wow! Thanks, people, whoever you are. It was just the boost I needed. I was really disappointed with my final pics, expecting more out of this challenge (more muscle) but after reconsidering I realize I did accomplish some good things. I've also learned a few things. I thought maybe it would be useful to someone else if I share them here. I'm starting to realize I probably need to do more supplementation & heavier weights. I'm kind of a hard gainer and 80 grams of protein a day isn't enough. And from past challenges when I've gained fat in between, I've learned not to slow down my momentum by taking a break. Another thing is I need more meal variety to keep me interested. I have the EFL book now and have started planning out every single meal the night before. And something else I've realized is that I need to do is forge ahead with my exercise/nutrition plans despite the wishes of others. I usually cave in when friends want to eat out, or put off my workout if my husband sleeps in. No longer...I've got to do this for myself. No one's going to care about my results for me. I am laughing at myself as I pack my Gym bag, it looks like I am leaving for a week,

I told Bill, I am going to the gym and workout and then I'm going into Slidell to go to the mall and do some christmas shopping

so , knowing I will be gone almost all day,
I packed, my gym clothes, my clean clothes to go shoppping and  since I have to go workout my cardio on an empty tummy, I am just drinking my coffee right now,

I packed, an energy shake for after my cardio
another pure protien shake 2 and 1/2 hrs later,
a Protien bar for lunch time and my yogurt and cottage cheese and a spoon for if I am even longer then I expect,  I'ts cold so everything will stay cool in the car,

so I am off  to do the 2 things I love most, workout and shop ( more like spend money Bill says) lol

So have a happy BFL day everybody,
Love and hugs,

bye now , I have to go GET*HER*DONE!!

i'm starting to feel the magnetic pull of christmas cookies and eggnog. how will i break free of my orbit of 31 years? i'm not any less committed to my plan here, but i am questioning my sanity in doing this now of all times. i need the magnetic pull of a new orbit!

If you can commit yourself to being healthy over the holidays imagine how easy it will be the rest of the year. I think this is a great time to start

Because you saw no point in adding an extra 10 pounds to have to try and work off after the holidays. A very sensible approach in my view. :)

I hear ya! I was thinking the same thing in week one, but now that I'm three weeks in I've now realised that this is the BEST time to start. Just think how great it will feel to start the new year already on track with your health and fitness. Plus no need for any "get fit" new years resolutions cos you're already doing it. :-)

This is a great way to kick start your eating strategies and learn to use discipline to choose healthier options than the junk that is so prevalent this time of year. Have FUN with it... it's a great journey!

Even if you do not have perfect days because of the schedule during the holidays, and all of the treats, you can make headway. It is not about perfection. It is about improvement. Everyday that you are consciously working on this program (even if you are not perfect) you are making progress toward a healthier lifestyle. In the end it is better to have improved and to have found a lifestyle that is healthier than to have a perfect 12 weeks. Use 12 weeks as a benchmark, but learn and improve each day toward a lifestyle.

2 words....FREE DAY! its still hard the days leading up to christmas with all the cookies and what not lying around....christmas came in the middle of my challange last year before i got pregnant :) but if you need to indulge, make christmas your free day that way when you are having to have extreme self control around all the goodies before christmas, at least you ahve your christmas free day to look forward to! best of luck!

You can do this! Is blowing it worth how awful you will feel afterwards. I know that I cant take more than one freeday in a week. More than once indulging in holiday or special occasion binging has sabotaged a good start for me. You can be strong through the holidays, just remember what you goals are. Look at all the wonderful profiles and be reminded. Post often asking for a kick in the pants. Many here will oblige.

You can do this. We all have the same things pulling at us. I actually did have some eggnog last night. Just a small glass. I didnt die. I didnt drink the whole gallon. AND I dint gain 30 lbs. But what it did was satisfy my craving for it and now I dont want anymore. Remember this is body for LIFE. You have to teach yourself to deal with each situation and learn what your limits are and arent. Best of luck and Merry Christmas to all of you. Dawn

Body for Life Forum Message by Buffalean (12 posts) at 11:34 AM: What do you make in your blender?
So I bought one of those Magic Bullet blenders/food processors things yesterday and it's pretty fun and easy to use. What I need now is some BFL-friendly recipes for smoothies, etc. I just made one from cottage cheese, cocoa, vanilla, a few almonds and some splenda. It's pretty good, but not great (seems I needed A LOT of splenda to make it drinkable), but surely there are some better ideas out there from those of you who've been at this a while????

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (121 posts) at 11:45 AM:
HOW about the all time favorite, a Tuna shake!!! Yeah, I know, it sounds like something you would hurl before drinking all of it, but really it's not bad. The recipe is on deepsquatter.com, where a truly nutty bunch of powerlifters hang out, and basically it is a bloody mary with albacore tuna blended into it.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mickymacb (351 posts) at 11:46 AM:
I make mostly protein shakes, and throw in various fruits that are slightly frozen. Examples, vanilla protein shake mix as directed, but add a few half frozen banana chunks. Or try vanilla protein shake with pumpkin pie spices. Did your Bullet come with the little recipe book? Try the salsa, mmmm! I cut a pita into pieces, bake the pieces a while to make chips and eat them with the salsa and a little lf cheese. very tasty! :) I'll have to go home and get some of my other recipes and post them for you! :) Micky

I tried something the other day that turned out super yummy. I just blended cottage cheese, 1/2 cup frozen raspberries, 1-2 tsp splenda and 1-2 tsp fat-free, sugar-free instant lemon pudding mix. YUM YUM YUM! Sweet treat for sure. I even froze some of it and it froze up hard like a creamy popsicle. Next time I'm going to make quite a bit extra and actually make popsicles out of it! ~Ang

These all sound yummy, EXCEPT for the Tuna Shake (sorry michiganmike...don't think I could even try that one!) My bullet did come with the book....my kids went nuts yesterday wanting me to make all the things they'd seen in the infomercial. I guess I will have to get some protein powder next...haven't tried any yet but if I can drink cottage cheese in a shake I ought to be able to handle protein powder!

My favorite is a protein rootbeer float. I use the Carb Countdown skim milk (only 3 grams of carbs), Vanilla whey protein powder, ice, Splenda and Rootbeer concentrate. It gets all foamy like a rootbeer float and is so YUMMY!!! I've made creamsicles, too, the same way but with orange extract. I don't like to add fruit to my shakes because I'd rather drink the shake and eat the fruit separately. It makes me feel like I'm eating more that way. Check out some other extracts... add peppermint to chocolate protein and it's like a mint cocoa. There is also strawberry, banana, lemon, french vanilla, etc... Lots of options. Buy them all and experiment!

Hello all, I just recently started a challenge last week. I have completed challenges before and experienced great results. I got lazy for about 2 yrs and thus got fat and out of shape again. I started a challeng at the end of the summer and made it 8 weeks in and I was seeing very good results but then I had some family and personal issues that got me side tracked. I didn't work out for 2 months or eat healthy and saw all of my hard work vanish. since starting this new challenge last week I am already ever so slightly melting even though its only been 1 1/2 weeks. I am wondering if because I was doing a challenge 2 months ago my body didn't lose everything I did and maybe alot of the weight I put on was water weight. Well just thinking aloud but its pretty cool that I am seeing results much quicker qith this challenge. Good luck to everyone on here.

I have always found the quicker you change things after you put weight on the faster it comes off. If you let the weight stay on for extended periods of time it's much harder to get rid of. I don't know the physiological reason behind it. Maybe short term and long term fat are made up of different substance, but that's my experience. For instance, over the Thanksgiving weekend I put on 7 pounds! However, I've lost all but 2 pounds of it during the first 4 days of this week. Hopefully that motivates you to not go into those long droughts of unhealthiness

It is harder to lose the muscle after you have it... On the otherhand it is harder to gain muscle than it is to lose fat. Losing fat is much easier than gaining muscle

Still going strong and holding it together. Yesterday, however, was a mess and I never did get a minute to myself. I had to cancel on Snowboardingfairy for Pilates and didn't get in any excerise so I'll take my exercise free day as Thursday and get in the rest of the week.

My Stats for Thursday were:

Water - 10

Meal #1 - 4 egg whites, salsa WWBread w/ ICBINB
Meal #2 - Luna Bar
Meal #3 - Turkey Sandwich w/ FF Mayo/Horseradish, Cheddar Cheese.
Meal #4 - Chipotle  - chicken bowl w/ 1/2 the rice, pinto beans, pico and corn salsa and lettuce.

Unfortunately that's all the meals I got in the day was really hectic and got away from me. Doing better today.

I hope you're still all out there and doing well!

She's also picking up some Betagen from the base for me and I will start that tomorrow. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Thread: yummy holiday temptations (63 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by transformation (23 posts) at 06:30 PM: yummy holiday temptations
OK. I know the biggest way I sabotage my success is during social occasions, a nibble here, a nibble there... `ok, i'll have dessert since it's a special occasion'... etc. Since there are going to be many of these moments of temptation in the next month I need a plan. These are the last three weeks of my challenge and I will finish strong! My first idea is to find a way to gracefully say, `no thanks' when offered something `unclean' at a party and practice, practice, practice until it becomes a habit. (sounds easier than it is..) Instead I will focus on being social, meeting interesting new people and concentrate on what they are saying rather than the buffet. I want to find some (non-food) way of rewarding myself for doing it. Would love to hear your ideas and strategies for the holidays! Natalia

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (305 posts) at 08:16 PM:
Water, water, water!! Whatever party or social situation I am at I always have a glass of water in my hand. Just sip from it constantly. It satisfies any urge I have to "nervous eat." And I really focus on talking to people a lot. Usually, in party sitatuins, people are talking and eating at the same time, so you rarely can taste and enjoy the food to the fullest extent. I think that is why overeating occurs - peopl are too busy chatting to realize how much they eat! OH, and never go to a party hungry. That just spells bad news...

Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (407 posts) at 09:06 PM:
Wear something with a pocket that you can access discreetly. In that pocket put a little baggie that has a protien bar all cut up in little pieces. Each time you feel an urge to nibble, take a little piece of that protein bar. I absolutely PROMISE that when you leave that function, you'll be so happy you had that baggie.

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (560 posts) at 10:23 PM:
I've learned to eat a regular BFL meal before going, that way I've already had my full meal, and if I want to nibble at the gathering, I'm more likely to nibble on something good because I'm not as hungry and all the bad food isn't waving at me! Jennifer

Hi there. I was hoping to get some advice. I was doing great for alittle while and then started slackin off big time. I have a real hard time with the eating part of things. I have 3 kids under 5 and a finicky husband that I cook for so I need to make things as simple as possible. What are the basics that keep you eating clean? Thanks for the advice!

Mine are low-fat cottage cheese mixed with CarbControl yogurt (one of my favs!), tuna, apples, bananas, and dill pickles (which have no nutritional value whatsoever, I just use them as fillers!) My dinner staples are: Chicken, grilled fish fillets,
