I'm just curious what you all use and what it does for you. I use Betagen for quicker muscle recovery and to help me get more from my workouts.I use c-3 because I tend to get stressed easily and my body wants to hang onto abdominal fat. I use myoplex lite shakes to get lots of vitamins and nutrition with only 180 calories. If I had to choose only one of these to use it would be the Betagen. I really think it helps. Myoplex lite is a close second though. Its a tough choice.
I asked in honor of Flower's suggestion of us getting to know one another better and would love to hear what you all use. Robin

I can remember always wanting to be a teacher. Or to be more specific, a Shakespearean Lit professor. Then, when I really started to excel in diving, I set my sights on being an Olympic diver. After diving with US Diving for about 3 years, I had a severe back injury that put those dreams to rest. So it was back to teaching, while also dreaming of being a writer (I wrote my first short story for a contest in YM magazine; received honorable mention) and an actress (I have a knack for the dramatic).
Once I realized how much our public school system has gone downhill and teachers are not allowed the creativity they once were (and realizing I did NOT want to be responsible for raising everyone's kid), I changed my mind to a Paramedic. I enrolled in an EMT class, obtained my EMT-B and was beginning on my EMT-I, then planned on doing Paramedic school.
It was around that time that I applied for and was offered the job of Police Officer, but was quickly disqualified due to a bankruptcy in my past. Then, after checking into the paltry income a Paramedic makes in my area, I changed my mind to nursing.
I applied and was accepted in June of 2003 and graduated in May 2005. I am now an ICU nurse with new dreams of one day being a Nurse Anesthetist (but will remain a pipe dream due the long hours of schooling it would require and how much time it would take away from my family).
Oh, and I still have dreams of being a famous actress and write! = )

when I was young, I wanted to be an actress. Did that for a while in high school, then realised I stink at memorizing lines, haha!
I also wanted to be a karate instructor. I did that from about ages 14-16, and then got too distracted by boys. Wish I would have stuck with it, I could have had my own school plus a duel blackbelt now!
Now I am a civilian working for the US Air Force as a graphic artist. :)

When I was young I wanted to be a fireman or in the Air Force like my dad was. When he got killed in a plane crash that didn't seem so important anymore. Then, I decided I wanted to be a doctor like my stepfather was. But after doing pre med classes for a couple of years and spending my whole life studying, that seemed like a dumb idea too. So, I played in a rock band for a while and then after working in the real world for a while as a credit manager I decided that anything had to be better than that. So I went to law school and became a lawyer. Then I became a state senator and now I'm an administrative law judge. As I approach 60, and think about what I'm going to do next since my job is over in two months, I am beginning to think that health care doesn't seem as bad as it did back when I was young!

I have some family who are extremely wealthy and there is nothing I can give them they don't already have. Not to mention I can't afford the majority of the things they like. So what I do is donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation and they are sent a card notifying them that a donation has been made in their name. I also send a nicely framed family photo (these are grandparents I am speaking of) and both gifts are greatly appreciated, especially since we have had several deaths attributed to breast cancer in my family.

I like gift cards for birthday's....but I have a thing about Christmas...giving a gift shows that you took the time to choose something personally for that person, regardless of whether or not it's a gift that is made or purchased.
I have the same problem with my father in law and my brother in law....if they want it they buy it which leaves me with not much of a list by Christmas....I just ask them what they would like, this year...my father in law wants a nice shower massage head for his bathroom.....hey, I can do that.
Body for Life Forum Message by Go4steffie (709 posts) at 10:16 AM
I know that personally I love receiving gift cards and so do my children. I have learned over the years that many of the things I pick out for my kids especially, end up unused or not worn. The 3 oldest love shopping and have a ball with it. I would rather give them a gift card and we all go to the mall have lunch and really enjoy the day. I get to spend time with them doing something fun. My younger daughter likes gift cards to Build-A-Bear and Club Libby Lu's. Those are places that she can spend a lot of time having fun. Also, My dad usually sends our family a gift certificate for dinner and a movie. We have a family of 6 and to go out to a nice dinner and movie for all of us is close to 150 bucks. It is something that gets us together as a family.
I used to hesitate about gift cards, but now, I remember how much I WANT THEM FOR MYSELF, so I think other people want them too. I usually will get someone a small gift with the gift card.

Funny this is what I was thinking of doing this year too. I just don't know what to get anyone anymore. LOL I even asked my 12 year old nephew what he wanted this year, a gift or a gift certificate and he even said a gift certificate. He loves to go pick out his own stuff anyway. Now, for my parents and in-laws, I have their gifts already and I usually get a gift set of some sort for my brother and sister and the kids are getting clothes this year. Enough toys. I love getting gift cards because they do come in handy. I too like Jennifer's idea of making a little gift basket to go with it. May have to do that.

You all have some really great ideas!!! I like the basket idea, there are so many ways you could be creative with it. I think I will do a combination of gifts and gift cards and take everyone's tastes in to consideration. Christmas shopping just seems so overwhelming sometimes that I'd just like to buy everything on the internet and stay away from the malls all together. I went to Costco today and got 2 gifts out of the way and it wasn't so bad.
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1437 posts) at 10:50 PM
I love to receive gift cards and give them all of the time, too! Especially for the pre-teens and young adults that I buy for. Every year I get my mil a $50 gift card for Blockbuster and it takes care of her movie rentals for the year. She loves it! I also have given the blockbuster cards in the popcorn bucket you can purchase there with some movie-type candy all wrapped up in pretty colored celophane-type wrapping. This year a friend suggested a yearly pass to a local metro park. I am getting one for my sister (along with a couple of other things) and my dh's aunt & uncle. I am also getting gas cards for my nephews who are in college and broke!!! I know they will love it. I think it is thoughtful - if you know they like to shop, it is a great gift!!

So I switched banks a couple of weeks back. No big deal. New bank is here in DC, old one is in Colorado. The Colorado account is still active.
I switched my direct deposit around as well. Again, should be no big deal. Get paid on Friday, see direct deposit sheet, assume, "hey direct deposit went through fast!" Okay assumption because my company banks with my new bank.
One tiny, tiny little problem. This monring I discover no money in said bank account. And no money in old bank account. Direct deposit slip says money deposited to old bank account.
So I ask, where the (insert bad words here) is my paycheck?

Just finished reading a few posts and thought I would post a few more before pics of myself. I know that when I am feeling unmotivated it helps to see someone similar to myself during their transformation. The new pics are on the side and back view of Challenge 1 week 0. The side is of myself the month I started weight watchers and the back picture is about 1.5years later. Just thought that would show what the transformation was like and the amount of time it took to get that way. It goes to show EVERYONE can do it if they want to bad enough.

I usually slice them thin, sprinkle them with a mix of cayenne pepper, splenda, salt, pepper and chili seasoning. I then put the slices on the george foreman grill and close lid till cooked.
Yummy!
Or you can cube the potatoes with the same spice in the oven.

Level 9- 6.5
Level 10-7.0
It was a hard HIIT.

I asked Gus and he said I overdid it, I did 20 min hiit on the ellipitcal on hills and Level 15 then did my lower body wt workout, then I went back and did another 20 min hiit and uped it to level 18, I had 40 seconds to go when my husband walked in and said my face was white as a ghost, to get off and stop, I didn't I finished, I felt fine, but I was tired the rest of the day,
also I did notice on Friday and yesterday that when I got off the 1st time around everything kind of went black for about 3 seconds then I was fine, I am overdoing it, I guess do much of a good thing is not so good,
I'll behave myself and not do 2 hitts in a day, I was just feeling so good and wanted to keep going, but you don't know you are overdoing it til you overdo it!!

Body for Life Forum Message by GET*HER*DONE (2692 posts) at 06:54 PM

I really am ok, I think I just overdid it, b/c I did this 2 days in a row, I was on a roll and was feeling soooo good, just felt like I could keep going, oh and I was talking to the owner at the time, I can pass the talk test with no problems, guess that's b/c of my aerobic teaching days, hehe
anyway, I won't do too much ok, don't worry everybody, I'll behave myself,
exercise just really gets me going!

My advice is ... don't stop with a chiropratctor. If it is something more serious (I'm not saying it is, but just being cautious) - you'll want to get it diagnosed as early as possible. I would see an internist and an orthopedic surgeon as well. Get strong recommendations for both. This is your health and you want to see someone who can give you a solid answer. General practitioners don't specialize in anything, so if it's something beyond the basics, I always like to go to the experts in their fields. Bottom line - don't stop til the pain stops.

3D,
There are many free and trial programs you can get online to convert your BMP file to a JPG file. PSP (Paint Shop Pro) is a good, tried and true standby. A Google search will find it and many others.
You can get a clean, older shareware version that works great by clicking here: Public Access Shareware.
A good alternative is this free online converter. It works well.

I'm glad you're hanging in there, it seems like our team has been slowing disappearing!
That is so good that your family is aware of what you're trying to do and supportive. I saw my sister yesterday for the first time in a couple of months and she complimented me on how good I'm looking - yeah! She also gave me a gift of 4 of my all-time favorite Christmas cookies. Thankfully it was free day so it was awesome. She asked if I wanted a platter of her Christmas cookies this year that she's always given me in the past. Last year I said no - I was super pregnant and didn't need the extra weight or sugar. I said no again this year. Yeah!
I think I tried Betagen once, you'll have to let me know what you think. I can't take anything it all makes me feel weird. I hate taking anything though . . . hell, I was going for natural childbirth until the 27th hour of labor I said okay I give.
Keep up the good work!!

Some people were asking me how the board dinner went. It worked out great. I had some sliced turkey breast, brussel sprouts & carrots and left the bread and other carbs alone. For dessert, there was a table of maybe 8 different ones. Rather than do more than glance at it, I asked to talk to the chef to see if he could make something else for me. He brought me out the most beautiful display of fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries & strawberries. Since is WAS my free day, I ate them all! It was a really nice treat without being full of sugar and fat. Plus, I felt a whole lot better the next day. Isn't it wonderful how BFL just becomes a part of you? It just gets easier every day. Thank you all again for such warm and generous comments. They really keep me striving to do better each day.

Tenacious! That was a word that was used to describe me at the highest point of my life! On the go, balls to the wall, with my ass on fire! I was going places...
Well hell, I better get started huh? lol
I was sitting on the couch watching my son stand on his head with his legs spread in a perfect split on the couch..
"did that give you a mental?" LOL
Well anyway, I was thinking about everything, my life, mom leaving. my son and I on our own, my legs throbbing and he is hungry.... What to do?
I know, YOU GET IT DONE! as Linda saids....
So I got up and fixed him something to eat, he took his nap and momma pulled out the TAEBO! Moved the couch back, swept the floor/carpet,,,, and did one of his new workouts, KICKED MY ASS! But you have got to remember, I haven't been able to work out in 3 weeks... Damn it, I got up, and I did it.. I BROKE A SWEAT!
I swept and mopped the floors, finished the laundry and went out and fetched the garbage can..... I did all this before he woke up from his nap, and I even got a shower in there!
He woke up, we ate dinner, and went for our walk~
Bath time, his of course, and we watched 101 Dalmations and again, he fell asleep on my lap.
So in closing, I will say this, How bad do you want it, it is just chapping your rear end to sit on that damn couch a minute longer, well it did mine and all it took was an infocommercial to wake this spirit inside me, it yelled at me just long enough to stop feeling sorry for myself and get up!
It is inside of all of us, that drive and desire to succeed, to reach and maintain those goals, to be a part of something special and to leave our mark on this world!
SO GUYS AND GALS LETS DO IT!

First 'Free Day' today. Unfortunately, I think I went a bit too free - and am now racked with guilt. Next week, it will be a free *meal*.
I need some words of advice for others who had 20+ pounds to lose when the started this program. I find myself getting a bit impatient and frustrated when the 20 pounds haven't magically melted off during the course of the day. Remind me this is a LIFETIME program, not a quick fix!!
I am going to add some moderate intensity cardio during the week, too. I read the Hussman Fitness site, which was great, and he suggests adding some in if you have a bit of weight to lose. How much I add in will depend on how I feel. What do you guys think about this?
I've had some problems with my shoulder during the week too. I need to get an injection in a couple of weeks that should help it a bit. What a bad week to get a shoulder injury eh!! (Completely unrelated to BFL). In the meantime I am going to continue my workouts, though obviously UB won't be quite as intense.
Soo... any advice, encouragement, personal stories etc would really cheer me up tonight!! Sorry about the novella, I needed to get it out knowing someone who understands will be reading..... :)

Nic, free days are suppose to be guilt free so don't worry about it! It's trial and error, next time you'll know not to go overboard. You need to realize that you wont see the pounds melt off all at once and you probably wont see any sagnificant weight loss until week 6 or 7. You should however see your clothes starting to fit better around week 4. Most people get fraustrated by week 6 and stopped just when they are about to turn the corner. Just be patience and persistant!
Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (897 posts) at 10:28 AM
Hi
I agree with Norm. Besides, remember that in terms of fat burning, it is going to come out of the internal organs, and muscle, before it comes off of the more obvious spots. Ie from the inside out, so that will take some time where it does not seem like visible progress. Once that is done, no where else to burn fat but the obvious places, and that too will go.
Yours in Health,
Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (89 posts) at 10:51 AM
Guilt over your free days is counter productive.
Let it go. Enjoy what you do eat, try not to have a free day eateverythingincluding tables, chairs and placemats. That's generally not a good way to get fiber into your diet. ;)
I actually found that planning my free day early on kept me on track. So the night before I would ID cravings from the week. Example:
Meal 1: Pancakes, syrup, bacon.
Meal 2: Myoplex (half if I'm not feeling hungry, just enough not to throw my day off)
Meal 3: French onion soup from my fave place to eat, a slice of Opera cake
Meal 4: the rest of my myoplex
Meal 5: whatever crazy dinner option the family chooses (ask for a doggie box so I don't over eat)
Meal 6: cottage cheese.
This is a planned free day. Your mileage may vary. :)

I met Satan yesterday, and her name is Melissa.
Thursday, my wife and I did an kickboxing class at the local gym. It was tough, but I thought it was going to be a lot tougher. I was proud I made it through.
Yesterday (Sat) there was another kickboxing class (different instructor). That is where I met Satan. I am convinced this woman was trying to kill me. The class was nothing like Thursday's class. I checked and there is no difference between the classes, i.e. one being a beginners and the other advanced.
I am extremely proud of the fact that I did complete the class, and I will be seeing Satan again next Sat.
I do find it interesting that 40 minutes on a treadmill seems like an eternity, but 40 minutes of kickboxing goes by so fast.

Hey, you gotta pick the game you can win. You don't see it- fine. Look at the numbers. They are going down. Down good, up bad. :) Ergo, we have good. ;)
As I read your results, I see a few very good things that you need to celebrate.
1) You COMPLETED 12 weeks. This is an amazing thing. How many people to do you every day here on tracker who say, "I'm starting Challenge 1 for the X time"? You finished. According to the gang at EAS you are ahead of the curve. You've made the first, critical, amazing step.
2)It looks like you hit your goal to fit back into your size 18 clothing. Again, you made a goal and hit it. Excellent job. Maybe it wasn't on your timeline, but that's okay. You still hung in there and hit the goal.
3) I see a huge chest drop. As a fellow buxom female, expect this. And expect this to throw your numbers off for a bit. Your body is looking for reserves of fat to chuck. The boobs are a plethora of spare fuel. Look at that chest drop again. Big number there.
The picture may not show much, but the numbers do. I see a winner in progress. :)
Are you still breast feeding? And are you getting a solid 7-9 hours of sleep at night?

Mine that I came up with (No Excuses - Just Results)
Four of my favorites from Green Bay Paker's coach Vince Lombardi:
1. If you can accept losing then you can't win.
2. Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.
3. The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
4. The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.

I just received this and for those men out there, a little substitution and it applies to you as well!
To Blessed to Be Stressed
Someone will always be smarter. Their house will be bigger. They will
drive a better car. Their children will do better in school. And their partners
will fix more things around the house. So let it go and love you and your
circumstances. Think about it. The prettiest woman in the world can have
hell in her heart. And the most highly favored woman on your job may be
unable to have children. The richest woman you know -she's got the car, the house, the clothes -might be heartbreakingly lonely. So, love you. Love who
you are right now. Tell yourself, "I am too blessed to be stressed." Be
blessed ladies and pass this on to encourage another woman. "To the world
you might be one person, but to one person you just might be the world."
Send this to wonderful strong women you know. I did. Possibilities and
miracles are one and the same. Hugs,Ronna

Since I started BFL I have been getting really bad cramps in my calves and feet. A girl I work with is doing this and she just emailed me and said the same thing so I thought there might be a reason for it.
Lori
Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (45 posts) at 03:30 PM
Cramps - don't they just drive you mad.
I used to get cramps in my calves. Now I seem to be okay but definitely need to do lots of calf stretching after a LBWO.
It's hard to know whether this was the only reason for improving, but I did start to take a magnesium supplement. Doctor told me I needed it for completely unrelated reasons, so the no cramping was just an extra benefit. My massage therapist also said my muscle tone improved significantly after I'd been taking it for a while.
Hope you can get rid of yours.
Donna
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (578 posts) at 03:33 PM
I get them....get this..in my toes! It drives me insane! Usually either my little toe, or the one right next to it. Or I will get them in the arch of my foot. Another killer. Never in my calves though. It also takes about 20 minutes for it to feel completely gone.
Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (89 posts) at 03:43 PM
Often cramps can be attributed to not getting enough essential minerals. Frequently this is potassium. Not always, but frequently.
Check your during workout hydration levels. Hydrate before you start.Make sure you are getting water during your workout. Drink after. If you aren't doing it now, add in a multi-vitamin.
I religiously stretch my calves and legs after every single workout. I have very. very tight legs.
If you are doing these things and the problem persists, try adding a half a banana post workout. It's going to be burned off so fast that it won't matter. If that corrects the problem it's probably potassium.
If the problem persists, see your doctor.
Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (296 posts) at 04:08 PM
I agree on the multivitamin! Also, on the stretching after working out (that includes both cardio and weight day).
Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (336 posts) at 04:37 PM
I have to take a potassium supplement because I have a potassium deficiency. I used to get really bad cramps in my legs, calves and side while working out and while at rest. I was to the point of eating 2 bananas a day until my husband suggested to get a potassium supplement. Ever since, I have been fine. Cramps are also a sign of dehydration, so make sure you're drinking plenty of water, especially during your workout.
Body for Life Forum Message by GET*HER*DONE (2692 posts) at 04:50 PM
yes, just recently too, my feet cramp up at the toe line where the toes bend and my toes separate, it's terrible, its usually when I sit in the recliner
It might be we are working harder and it is the lack of enough potassium like fitchic said!
but eat a banana almost everyday and a gallon of water and eat right, so It's odd, cause I never had that before and boy does it make u nuts!!!!!

I usually dread going clothes shopping, and have been putting it off because I'm in between sizes and I didn't want to have to buy more later. But...my boss has been complaining about my attire, and I have to admit that some of my clothes were starting to look pathetic on me. So I bit the bullet and went shopping today. I did find 5 dress slacks that fit pretty good, along with a pair of jeans and two blouses. When I got home, I went through my closet and pulled out all of the pants that don't fit anymore. I was surprised to pull out 11 dress slacks that don't fit! Sizes 12, 10 and 8. God it felt SO good to pull out those 12's and replace them with 6's! I'm floating on cloud 9!

I know how you feel! I've sold or given away all my 12s, 10s, 8s, 6s... and now I'm stocking up with 2s and 4s. The good thing is... at the rate you are losing... you can sell your new clothes soon on eBay and just about recover your costs. That's what I do. Congratulations on your "size revelation"!!
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (578 posts) at 04:21 PM
Yes, I sell all of the kids clothes on e-bay when they outgrow them, and then use it to get them new ones. It does really save a lot! I do plan on posting some of my clothes on e-bay but some of them are so shot they aren't worth selling.

Jennifer, Congrats on your new smaller size!!! It is a wonderful feeling to shop for smaller clothes!!!
Ebay is a great place to sell clothes you can no longer wear. And it is always nice to have to extra money to use towards your new clothes!!

I just donate the old clothes to charity if I don't know anyone who needs them.Maybe I should sell them. I do need the money and really don't have time or initiative to do a garage sale. I just don't like garage sales. I wish I had saved one pair of size 22w pants though; that was my biggest size. I did save a pair of size 18 jeans to try on for inspiration as I go. The rest of the clothes that I outgrow, I am getting rid of so that I am not tempted to grow back into them. Some of the clothes had been my mom's and I got them when she passed away so it was hard. I finally convinced myself that I need clothes that were made for my generation anyway and that someone else will enjoy them more. This last summer, I went to goodwill shopping for shorts and t-shirts because I will most likely not be big enough for them next summer. I don't plan on spending a lot of money on clothes until I get to a size I can live with. Wasn't there some kind of clothing exchange set up by people on the tracker or did that go by the wayside?

My most drastic loss of clothing would be my bra. It's WAY TOO BIG for me now. Gotta love it.

Yeah, I think I've been fortunate on the bra thing. My chest size went back up a little, so the loss isn't so bad.

Hi gang!
I think I just needed to vent a little today... I hope I don't sound like I'm whining, but lately, I've just been running on empty and having a hard time getting my momentum going. However, I did put in a nice 15-mile bike ride yesterday and a couple of shorter rides earlier in the week. And I'm gradually getting my food and nutrition dialed in.
I just think right now I'm a bit drained from the frustration of dealing with chronic illness. When I talked to my doctor the other day, he didn't really have an explanation for why I have had has so much difficulty the last couple of months - and I don't have confidence that he has a grasp of how to effectively treat this illness... Sometimes it just seems a bit too overwhelming and there is a strong temptation to just focus on escape rather than progress...
I should be going up to the UCLA Pituitary Disorders Clinic soon and hopefully I'll get some answers that will make it a lot easier to stay on top of the illness and subsequently be more consistent with my BFL program.
I'm sure part of what is going on is that I'm sitting here by myself today, planning Christmas and I'm really feeling that longing to have a partner to share Christmas...and my life... I've lived alone for many years, and I guess I'm just anxious to get past the health issues and get on with my life (Duh!). Don't get me wrong, I'm quite optimistic and I have made a great deal of progress in getting my life back this last year. And I've been pursuing things on eHarmony and Match.com. So my guess is that I'm just running on empty right now...but I'm sure I'll get some gas back in my tank soon and be truckin' right along...
Okay, that's my rant! I'm much better now! Thanks for letting me vent. Hope you all have a great week!
Jim

I don't know what your disorder does to you but I myself have fibromyalgia and many doctors don't understand it and some won't even admit it exists. No one knows for sure what causes it and there are all kinds of theories on how to treat it. I got frustrated and finally did online searches for information as well as going to the bookstore and buying several books written by doctors and therapists that have fibromyalgia. A lot of the symptoms have abated because of proper nutrition and exercise but I still get very achey in my joints this time of year when its cold and wind is blowing. I also visited a chiropracter and an herbalist and bought lots of supplements and herbs. Not being able to get out in the sun also makes me feel depressed sometimes. I always hate the winters. I just know that better times are ahead and I have to keep going. I will say that since I have been doing bfl that I have seen more improvement in my condition than any other method of treatment. Keep on keepin' on, one day at a time. Celebrate the improvements you have made. Robin

Have you ever wondered just how far we can take this BFL program? Can we continue to build muscles and bones? Can we really turn back the hands of time? Can we win the battle of the bulge for good?
Not to long ago I would have never dreamed it possible to lose weight and keep it off.
But today---with the grace of this program that has become a reality for me and many other boomers.
So what happens once we complete our 12 week challenge?
The answer for me is to start another one and just keep on keeping on!
(Especially if you consider the alternative...LOL.)
Being over fifty is kinda scary. But it also offers up a sense of freedom to really be me.
Finally after all these years I am comfortable with who I am and I guess I really don't worry as much about what other people might think about me.
I was just wondering tonight if there were any other BFL Tracker members out there who are past the half century mark and who have turned their lives around as a result of this program. Or who are contemplating the meaning of fifty plus?

Michelle, I was teaching aerobics at age 35 when everyone said, are you nuts, you are too old to start doing that,
at 50 I thought I was too old and quit!
at 51 I didn't like who I had let myself become so I took the challenge, and then another one and yet another
Today, I am 51, will be 52 in February and after loosing 50 Lbs since last Christmas I am back to the energy level I was when I was 35 yrs old,
Yes, I am over the Hill but I am still climbing the mountain.
BFL gave me my life back , I don't intend to quit now.
I want to see just how far I can take it! and you know I got this feeling thatnow's the time, I WILL GET*HER*DONE!!
Just have to keep thinking positive!
I love to say, Ain't it Nifty, I'm over 50!!

Well, I'm 52 and here to do it again. I did my 1st challenge right when I was turning 50. I had just lost about 37 lbs. and finished it off with a challenge and 13 more lbs. I ended up in a size 4/6 but looking better than I'd ever imagined. I felt like a teenager again!
Unforunately I got sidetracked and gained it all back. This time I knew right where to come and am totally back on track. Can't wait to get back in those cute clothes by spring!!!
I feel like we finally have found the Right way and I wish more women knew our secret. It works!

I'm almost 60. I've gained about 20 pounds of muscle since starting BFL. I was fat at 170 pounds when I started the program in 2000. Today, at 175 I am pretty lean, and at 170 I look like a body builder. I continue to gain muscle and to, more importantly, lift heavier than ever. Guys don't care what we weigh, but we have to know how much we lift!

Michelle,
I'm not there yet, but closing in at 46. I was just wondering...do we need to continue to add weight on the weight training and increase the cardio in order to maintain. I find that this is the perfect combination of exercise and nutrition to help me stave off the bulge that hormonal changes are trying to do to me. I am very happy with the way I look and feel right now. I want to keep this up...maintain it. I'm thinking that I will start to give it back if I am not continuing to try to improve. But I really don't want to get much tighter and not any lighter. Do I still go for 10s everyday? I'm thinking that if I do anything as a usual routine it will become too easy and therefore not work on keeping me on top of it. What do you do?

I just can't do it anymore. I didn't eat clean very much over the Thanksgiving week, missed two workouts and gained like 8 lbs. WTF? So started back this Monday and uped my exercise to 1 hr a day on cardio days (20 min treadmill and 45 min DVD called the Firm) and 75 minutes on strength days (45 regular workouts and Firm DVDS also) and I ADDED abs exersizes, 144 reps, to ever strength day and I thought, "Hmm maybe that will dropp the added padding i gained over the holiday?"
Did it? No. My waist is the same as the beginning of the week. So I made the whole weekend a free weekend and skipped my cardio because obviuosly it isnt working for me. UGGGGHHHHHH, I am so frustrated.
I just want to lose weight and look good. I am sick of being the fat girl. I told my husband the other day that I look mutated and that I was failure, and that I might as well weigh 3oolbs because thats how I feel. Ofcourse that led to an arguement about me talking bad about myself.
Forgive my rambling but I am going top post 4 week progress picture tomorow and then you probably wont hear from me anymore. Just wanted to let you all know in case you cared.
Thanks for being there to support me through this journey, I just wish i could complete it with you all.

Patti the thing I've had to work really hard to learn is this... I didn't get fat overnight, I can't expect to be fit overnight. Some people see great success immediately and then plateau. Some get off to a slow start and then pick up and have a magic transformation week somewhere around week 6-8. Some are slow and steady all along. Not every program is right for every person, but I KNOW that BFL is a healthy way to live and has been proven successful for just about every body type out there. If you'll just commit to yourself to follow the program *as written* for 12 weeks I'm confident you'll come out of the 12 weeks looking and feeling better. Don't try to tweak it for speedier success. Accept the fact that it's written as a 12 week program and give yourself those 12 weeks to see progress. You will feel so accomplished and good about yourself for sticking with it!!
Best of luck!

Patti, the 8 lbs you "gained" is from water. It cant be fat because you would have to have eaten 28,000 extra calories over a week to actually gain that much.
Dont give up and go crazy on us. :) If you quit, you will never reach your goals. If you stick with the program at least you are giving yourself a chance.

Patti,
First off, let me say that most of us have been in your shoes. Few of the people I know "nailed it" the first time, and all of us have doubts from time to time and have little setbacks.
But ... I gotta' say it: I just read your profile and saw your pictures. There is no question that if you follow the guidelines in the BFL book you will make a most dramatic and satisfying transformation.
If you would take the time to go to the bodyforlife.com website and take a good look at the "Success Stories" section you will see. I personally know many who have pulled it off.
And then there are these examples out of thousands:
How did they do it?
They stuck with it and lost the weight a pound at a time. That's how I did it, that's the way you'll do it -- it's the only way it can be done. Give youself the gift of patience. The gift of 12 weeks of dedication.
You know, the next 12 weeks will happen anyway. Why not ensure that when you look back at the end of those 12 weeks you will be able to smile? The only way you can fail, is if you quit.
Yours in fitness, Larry
For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to get through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.

One more point. Chuck is right about the water.
Did you know that 1 gallon of water weighs 8.33 pounds?
That's why our weight can fluctuate so much during the course of the day. Much of it is the weight of water and food going in and out.

Hi Patti,
You wrote: "I just want to lose weight and look good. I am sick of being the fat girl."...there fore DO NOT QUIT. Of course you can do this. You CAN loose weight, you CAN be healthy and FIT. You CAN do anything. JUst be good to yourself, Be self forgiving. THis is a big lesson to be learned for you, staring you right in the face. So you messed up, so what. You know what you need to do. I am not a saint. I have hit brick walls too many times to count. I can't give in, or the negative beast within has won. Of course peole here care, but you have to care in order for the change to occur. Each time you pick yourself back up you get stronger, that I know for sure. Know that once you get back on the right track you are bound to steer of course again. But that is the GOOD news, because you KNOW this will happen again and you learn how to deal with it and do everything not to allow it to happen again. Those that succeeded failed many times as well, so can you. I need you here to keep me on track and share with us all how you worked through it. You can be a powerful role model, you just do not see that yet. Keep going!!!!

Don't quit, but as Coach Lombardi says, "Once you quit, it becomes a habit"
Also there's the advice of motivational speaker Anthony Robbins, "The past does not equal the future. Just because you tried before and failed does not mean that you won't succeed."
Remember this....Thomas Edison tried over 10,000 times before he got the electric lightbulb to work. And Col. Harland Sanders traveled around for two years living out of his car, before he got someone to say "Yes" to his idea of a francising Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The point of all this.....Don't give up.
Lastly, some advice I once read on a post...You are ALWAYS just one meal away from being back on plan if fall off.
Hope this helps.

Hey girl, I soooooo know where you are coming from. I started and stopped several times before getting it right. Let me point out a few similarities about the way you and I think. I will also explain how I changed my thinking and finally found success.
1. I thought that any weight gain was bad. I realized that during the transformation muscle weighs more than fat and sometimes you build more muscle than you lose fat, so the scale is not a true picture.
2. I wanted major results each week. Major results for me didn't take place until about week 8 or 9.
3. I wanted the tape measure to move everytime. I realized at the end that it moved slowly, sometimes not at all, but in the end it had moved considerably.
4. I thought more cardio or weight programs (like the FIRM, which I had done before)would give the same results. I realized that until I did BFL the way it is spelled out in the book, I didn't get the results I was looking for. I mean 20 minutes of cardio with the intensity changes Bill set up and the weight lifting he set up as well. I tried to go walking arond the neighbohood with a friend and it didn't work because the intensity didn't change. We also did the FIRM tapes and I did not get the results!!!
I only write this because I really have been where you are. My advice is to sit down with the book again, and try to follow it to a "T." Don't beat yourself up when you falter and keep going. I've been there and I know you can do it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Larry (120 posts) at 09:26 PM
One final thing. The answer is not in working out harder or longer, or in doing more cardio, or cutting carbs -- or starving yourself. Those approaches are counter-productive.
The answer is not in trying to get fast results, but consistently striving for long-lasting results -- and that will happen if you follow the plan and stick with it.
Your body works on a cellular level and the BFL plan is optimized for a safe, effective fat loss of 2 - 3 pounds per week. Some get more, some less.
Take a long-term view and you just can not go wrong. I'd like to see you succeed at this, and so do many, many others.
My best to you and yours,
Larry

Hey Patti! Your first post reminded me of that funny postcard of the cat sitting in toilet, with his paw on the flush handle--and the caption is "GOOD BYE CRUEL WORLD!" See, in many ways your quitting would be just like that cat pulling the handle. Yes, you would have a moment of freedom, but then it would be followed by lots of dark, smelly and rarely fun activity! Do quit feeling sorry for yourself, please, and get back in the damn game. If this were easy, everybody would be lean and beautiful and famous! You can do it, but you have to DO IT!

Everyone here has some very good points, and I hope you stay with it Reese. And yes, I've wanted to throw in the towel on several occasions, but haven't. One of the things that I came to realize, that I not only had to change my body, the way I lived, but I had to change the way I thought about my body. That seems to be taking a lot more time than the physical changes. I'm still not where I want to be, but plugging along. As a teenager, I thought like you..I wasn't overweight at that point, but I thought I was fat. That lead to me starving myself, and trying every fad diet out there until I finally DID have a weight problem. I had created my own problem. My heaviest weight was 200lbs, on a 5'2 frame. I was miserable. Just as I know you are miserable. I know you are frustrated, but please think about this. Are you really ready to give up and resign to being miserable? You can change your body, but it will take time and patience.
HUGS!

All I have to say, is one week is not going to make much of a difference. You probably shocked your body too and began overtraining. That will mess up your weight loss as well. You apparently are very stressed over this whole weight loss thing and I know where you're coming from. Believe me, I have been there and it's no fun at all. I'm still overweight and I have been working on this for almost 2 years now. You just have to be patient, don't do too much exercise, eat clean, drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest and come here and post every day. These forums for support can be really wonderful places when you need support. I want you to know, I'm here for you as well. Message me if you need to just chat. Just don't quit. I promise, with time and patience, you'll be amazed at what will happen. One other thing, you said you increased the amount of time on your strength training workouts. You may not have lost anything this week because you were gaining muscle. Keep it up. You'll get there.
Big hugs,
Crystal

BINGO!! I know, you've ALL heard me preach this before... but maybe you haven't, Patti.
I HAD to give myself a timeframe for success. I knew that for me, if I said "12-weeks to fitness"... that I would be so hurt if I didn't have the million dollar body by the end of 12 weeks. SO, I told myself I would give it my ALL for 1 year... that's 4 challenges. After that I would determine if the program was working or not. If it wasn't working... I'd try something else.
Now, you can look at my profile and see that I would never win the BFL championship, but by-golly... I'm sure proud of the hard work that I've put in... and the benefits that I've earned. This is the ONLY program that I have actually been able to be HAPPY with the eating plan and be able to stick with the workout requirements.
I agree that you are WAY overdoing it on the exercise regime. Scale it back to BFL "by the book". If you want to ADD anything... take a walk as many days a week that you want, but do it at a steady state, not intervals. You can push yourself if you want, but do HIIT only 3 times a week.
The profiles you see on Tracker are real-life. There are countless numbers of people doing BFL in my little town now because so many people are seeing the changes BFL brings. But, there are people who have tried it and give up, too, because they THINK it's not working. Stay strong. Keep at it. DON'T judge it until you've been faithful to do it for the full 12 weeks. Then... start on C2!!!
This has been the most amazing year in my life. I've learned more about myself and what I'm made of. I'm more fit than I've been in 20 years. I feel wonderful! AND, I can do 6 chin-ups -- never done that before! Ha.
I owe it all to blood, sweat, tears and Bill Phillips!! We're in this together... remember we're here for you.

nobody likes a quitter ;-)
seriously though, it sounds like you are focusing on the negatives.... i'm fat, i can't do it, it's too hard, oh poor me....
the ONLY way you are going to pull out of this is to get on the positives in a hurry! I dont know much about you, but if you are typing, you must be alive, that is something... also you do mention a husband, you should be very thankful, alot of people dont have anyone. Make your list, and think about it, do you want some negativity to ruin all the good you have going in your life? You need to get mad right now and do something about it.
Sorry to be harsh, but if you were just posting to get alot of "we love you and you can do it,,,,,,, plenty above this post..

Oh Patti, Don't quit!! Things will get better if you just hang in there!! If you just stick with the program you will see that it does work!! You need to stay focused on your goals!! You also need to give yourself the full 12 weeks!! Everyone gets discourage at some point, but you must pick yourself up and keep yourself going in the direction of your goals!! If you give up you will never get to where you want to be!! Do not give up on yourself!! Believe in yourself!!! Love yourself enough to hang in there!!!Keep us all posted, we do care!!!

Sorry about the blank post above.
See Diane Robertson, Body for life Website Champion, year 2000, Special Recognition. Similar body shape and 3 "intense" 12 week challenges.
It takes time to build the muscle underneath the fat, if you are striving to make each workout just a little more intense, hit the 10's and increase the weight slightly.
Feed the muscle with proteins, greens and moderate carbs. Starve the fat by cutting down on the "high fructose syrup" in nearly all foods, cut out cheese, cut down on breads, substitute grey poupon mustard instead of mayonnaise. Drink myoplex for those sugar cravings.
Easy for us to offer advise, but this group won't "let you go" so easily.

I agree with the others. There is that correct range of activity that promotes weightloss. When you go over that, you are stressing your body and it hangs onto the fat. Cut back your cardio to less than 45 min, better yet the 20 min HIIT and only do it 3-4 times a week. If you put everything into a 20-30 min workout its much better for you in fatloss. For strength training, if this is your first challenge just do the workout exactly as outlined in the book, Body for Life. Just change your exercises around every couple weeks and increase your weights if you are not hitting the level 10 and working the muscles to exhaustion. I hear women say all the time on the guestbook and on tracker site that they did not see true weightloss until after week 8 or 9. Some even gained weight. Put your scale away for a while. Measure yourself no more than once a week and take your bodyfat % once every week or 2. I lost very little weight on the first challenge for the first couple months. I am on my second challenge and the same thing happened. I just ended week 8 and am just now starting to see some weight come off as of end of week 7.Stick with it and don't overdo it. More is not better! Work hard for shorter workouts and you will see results if you stick to it. Robin

Reese. Go on ANAVYWIFE's tracker. She just posted. It took her a year and a half. But look at what she did in that time! She transformed herself. It didn't happen overnight. Commit to this and you can and will have this transformation too. A year from now you could look like she does! It isn't magic. It is slow and steady. PM her and ask her about weeks that may have gone in the other direction. I'm sure she had her bad days too.

I am not trying to rehash bad memories or make anyone feel like I am feeling. God, I would wish that on anyone but today and last week I had a few people make a few comments and it got me thinking wow, it happens alot to me.
I guess I have always been in competition with someone. My best friend for my whole entire childhood was a beautiful, lean gymnast, Katie. We had been friends since the age two an around the age 16 poeple began tell her how beutiful and what a nice figure she had right when i was standing with her and never complimented me. Boys became interested in her at that time and she got the invitations on dates and I was left behind. I was average, a size 10 at the time and I began to feel bad about myself. Heres the twist, I was the first person to call myself fat. ME. And I began to look at my family, who are not fat but curvy and decided I was never going to be able to be that. I overate and here I am today.
Am I blaming other people? No...I am blaming myself. As I told my husband over the weekend, I put myself down, so when someone else does it, it doesn't hurt as bad. And other people do it. THey say words that they do not think are hurtful. They describe me as heavy or chunky, and I have even hear "big girl". But they hurt and I wonder, even if I reach a size 6 or 8 will they even notice or will I still be the fat girl?
Thats part of why I want to give up.
Ever had similar experiences.

of course we all have those thoughts...we are our own worst enemy. This is all a mind game (losing/gaining weight) either we take over what we know we have control of or we let ourselves continue to indulge the bad habits we know got us the way we are. You can either CHOOSE to be fat, or you can CHOOSE to be thin! Its all in the way you control what you think, eat and do. We all have bad days and we all have little voices that tell us we are fat and ugly or skinny and hot, it just depends on which voice we want to listen to! Here are a few questions for you:
How bad do you want it? and WHY??
Will quitting really make anything any better?
Will you feel successful once you go back to all your old ways?
Will you be happier without the BFL lifestyle?
Will you like yourself more if you quit?
I know this might sound a little harsh, but these are things that help me...everyones different, I know. I have went through these issues forever it seems and these are the things that I think about that help me to get back on track. If you need anything feel free to PM me, I have been through all of this too, maybe I can help you get through it:) REMEMBER, you CAN do this if you want it bad enough.
Sincerely,
Crystal

I was told by two women who are now thankfully ex gf's that I was no longer physically attractive to them...and this was when I wasn't anywhere NEAR the obesity I go up to the last few years. My former manager actually congratulated me for losing weight this week though as he said I used to look like a damn buddha...he meant it in good faith though so I didn't take it too harshly.

Sweetemotion I have been there as well. But that was not the first person to call me fat. I was in 5th grade and was a little chunky I guess. I did not have rolls of fat but I was a little bigger than some of the girls in my class. A girl who I thought was my friend gave me a valentine with a pig on it that had wings like a cupid. I noticed that she only gave that valentine to all the obese kids in the class and I heard her laughing about it with some other girls later. I was so hurt. I vowed I would be skinnier. I was 11 yrs old when I started dieting. I lost 16 lbs that year and my ribs stuck out through my sweaters. I looked at my thighs and still thought I was fat. My closest friends all told me I wasn't fat but I couldn't see it. Thank god my dad went on strike at work and we got reduced lunches at school with a punch card so I had to eat or they would have told my parents at conferences. I would have probably become anorexic if this had not happened. I started doing exercises and going to weight watchers with my mom on and off until she couldn't afford it any longer. My weight went up and down over the years as I went from one fad diet to another.
This is all about a mind transformation. I became what I thought I was...fat. NOW, I am becoming what I see myself to be. I look at before and afters and at health magazines to get a visual of what my figure may look like. I visualize those six-pack abs and muscular thighs and biceps and back, etc. Thats why Bill Phillips said "change your mind, change your body, change your life." Porter Freeman said he put it in that order for a reason. Robin

I've always been what black people like to refer to as "thick". So all of my life it never even occured to me to be upset by my appearance. All the women in my family looked just like me except a few.
So in 1993 when my sister died I was the smallest I'd ever been, I was like a size 3(prior to this I was a size 11/12). But after I started having kids I gained a lot of weight. So while I've always been called big boned or thick no one ever called me fat.
Then along comes my 9 year old daughter who called me fat(I was a size 16). Then she tried to sugar coat it and told me lovingly while patting me on the arm that "Mommy your not fat, you're just obese". Could it have gotten any worse?

I cant really remember who or when I was ever told by someone else that I was fat, I just remember being told that I wasnt pretty. It was fall of my 7th grade year my 3 older brothers had just come out to visit my mom and sister and I. Needless to say my brothers are very good looking, anyhow, a girl named Natalie came up to me and asked how is it that your brothers are soooo cute and you are just well........... she didnt have to say anything more i was able to complete her sentece with.......... ugly, she was like, yea. It was then and there that it dond on me, that i was never going to be pretty, and that being one of the guys was just going to be it. that was also the year I began to think i was fat too. High school was no different I was one of the guys, except with boobs. Girls at my small town High School, always made fun of my hair( which is strawberry blonde)then when I had my daughter, who I must say is quite beautiful, with toehead blonde hair and big blue eyes, I had girls come up to me and ask,oh my gosh your daughter is so adorable, she isnt going to have your hair is she? Its almost like they could have just flat out said to me, how could YOU have such a beautiful daughter. FAST FORWARD, about almost 2 years ago,I recieved my first real compliment it came from my husbands cousin who is about 11 years younger than I( I think she was 14 )I was joking around about me wanting to go on the SWAN, when she said JEANNIE why? you are sooooooooo pretty, I have always though you were pretty. Can I just say that made my day. THe sincereity in her voice is what made me believe. Well thats my story. I still struggle with my own self issues, and I continue to fight with myself to believe in this statment" Each of us are made and formed from GOD's own eyes, who are we to down what GOD looks at as beautiful...

Hey guys, What are you using for at-home body fat measurements? Outside of the navy site.
thanks, Amy
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (135 posts) at 09:41 PM
I use an OMRON, bought from Walgreens for around $40, usually gets pretty reliable readings, but also use navy site for comparison

Hey Everyone. I am starting my first challenge Dac. 5 (tomorrow) and I am so stinkin excited about it I have told everyone I know so they can keep me accountable in case I need a kick in the pants. Usually, though, I can stick to a routine and eat correctly as long as I have a goal in sight, and feel like I am on the right track. For the past year, I have been looking for a guide. Something to lead me so I know that there is a chance that the results will be worth the effort. I am tired of aimlessly walking through the gym without a clue as to where to go next. So, I got the book in the mail Wednesday, and have been prepping myself for a life change since. My main concern about my first week is that I have NO Clue what weight I should begin at for any of the weightlifting. Is there a place on the web (or anyone here) that can give me an idea of what someone can lift? I really want to give everything I've got to each workout, and I need some guidance. The guys at the gym are the least helpful gym employees on earth. Also, I want to post my pics...but I don't have any way to take them. My husband is out of town (Marines) for a few weeks and my daughter (3) can't keep her sticky peanut-buttery fingers off the lens! Any suggestions? I know my transformation is going to be amazing, so I really really want to post my pics. (Even though they will gross most people out. Thanks in advance for any advice...and, you all are so motivating, I'm excited to get to join the group.

When I started lifting weights it was all by trial and error!! I started out with 5, 10, and 15 pound weights!! As you get stronger you will be able to increase your weights.
I wish you all the best!!!! See you around the Tracker!!!!!

For the pictures a tripod is great if you can get one. Failing that get a friend. Just bite the bullet and remember that this too like all things shall pass. :)
Start with 5, 10, and 15. Do not be worried if you are unable to finish all the sets/reps at first. Just log it and make the adjustment for the next workout.
Focus on good form in your lifting to start with. If you can't lift with good form, stop, drop back to the next lower weight and try again. Failing to lift correctly can lead to injury.
Water is your friend. Drink pleanty and often. Scale bad. Stay off it after you weigh in tomorrow. Also do body measurements so you have another way to keep track.
Remember this isn't a sprint it's more like a marathon. Women typically start seeing major changes around week 8. So hang in there.
Free Day does not mean eat everything including the kitchen sink, tables, chairs, and placemats. :) At the same time, do not feel guilty when you eat something on free day. That's why it's there. :)
Most important of all, hollar if you need help! :)

I am pretty experienced w/ weights, and I still go back to a "broomstick" if I am trying something new. Using little or no weight, go thru the range of motion, and feel your muscle flex at the top of each rep, then resist the weight back to the starting point.
For the picture, many cameras have a timer, just put it on a counter, set it, and strike a pose!
good luck J

For me, I started with 5s, 8s, 10s, 12s and 15s. That should be more than enough to begin. An example would be:
Bench press:
12 reps at 5 pounds,
10 reps at 8 pounds,
8 reps at 10 pounds,
6 reps at 12 pounds,
then 12 reps back at 10 pounds
Immediately follow up with something like flyes at approximately 10 pounds.
You will have to do a few workouts before you feel comfortable and in the groove of it. It may be strange at first, but utilize those mirrors in the gym to make sure you are using correct form. Once you start seeing muscles... you'll love that mirror!! Ha!
