I have a digital postage scale that goes up to 16 lbs. and converts from oz to grams. It's small and I use it for almost every meal. I weigh oatmeal, pudding, pasta....everything!! I love using it for baking, it's much more accurate than using measuring cups. It's money well spent. I think I got mine off eBay for around $30.

I hope santa brings me one. I have a crappy one now but its not accurate at all. I guess thats what I get for buying the cheapest one at Walmart huh?

Does anyone ever eat sushi. I love it and eat it on my cheat days. I know sashimi is clean but I rolls have white rice in them but I was thinking that one roll would be legit, any feedback?
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (663 posts) at 08:27 AM
No problem Romeo
Everybody has a different maintenance level of calories based on age/height/sex/bodyfat but Ive read that 1600 is the lowest a male should ever go. I used to eat that much when I first started. I know better now though.
I havent looked at the BFL website in a while but if they really do say 200-300 a meal, thats some really bad advice. You are practically a copy of me in size except my bodyfat is a little lower. I wasnt always around 13% though. I started out around 20%. If I were you, I would start slowly upping my calories to around 2000 a day. Start by added around 150 calories a day for a week until you are there.
Here is a link to a good website that will lay it out for you. All great information. Towards the bottom of the page there is a link to an Excel spreadsheet that does all the calculations for you if you are not good at math.
I track everything I eat on www.fitday.com It just makes things so much easier. Good luck!

They're like anything. You can build up tolerance.
Given that two sent you through the roof, I suggest doing 1 cap in the AM and 1 mid afternoon. Do not take them after 5pm if you want a prayer of sleeping. :)

I have some questions about meal replacement shakes. I am on the go so much that I really need the ready to drink kind. What kind do you buy and where do you get it from?
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (663 posts) at 08:59 AM
The Vitamin Shoppe seems to have the best prices on RTD myoplex shakes when you factor in the cheap shipping rates.
Body for Life Forum Message by Jame (3 posts) at 09:52 AM
i've heard that the shakes you mix yourself are better then the ready to drink ones... does anyone know why?
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (663 posts) at 10:00 AM
The ones you make yourself definately taste better but I'm unsure about the quality. The only thing I can see being an issue is if they use perservitives in the RTD. Im not sure if they do or not though.

I think they should choose a more appropriate hostess for the show. I think Caroline should be one of the contestants! That just bugs me that all the contestants are working so hard every week just to come to the table with out-of-shape Caroline Rhea.
Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (284 posts) at 09:00 AM
That was totally what I thought everytime I watched the show....how weird that they have this out of shape, non-inspirational hostess...you want some hot mama that you want to strive to look like...like the woman trainer...damn she looked good! I want her arms and abs!
Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (75 posts) at 09:42 AM
yea i totally agree with both of you. I thought the same thing every time i saw her.. maybe they are trying to motivate them to change so they won't look like her ahahaha
Body for Life Forum Message by time4change (4 posts) at 10:13 AM
I got on the website and looked at their meal plans and they were anywhere between like 900 to 1200 calories a day, isn't that like really bad for you to dip that low ?
Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (75 posts) at 08:18 PM
Wow that is really low.. especially for working out that much.. they were obviously not feeding their bodies and fuelling them enough for the large amounts of activity.. perhaps they would have had even better results if they bumped up the cals a little (with good food of course)

Hillary says they ought to get a little education in there instead of just assuming the public is that dumb about scale loss versus fat loss and muscle gain. Heck, half the BFL "public" is that damn dumb too! ALl people talk about on the guestbook and sometimes here is how the "SCALES AREN'T MOVING!" If WE don't get it, how the heck could the public???

Ok, so it is now the morning of December 7 (the day after my birthday) and I'm very disappointed. I stayed up all night last night (like a kid waiting for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve) anticipating some of my birthday pictures to come rolling in, but I only got one. I've actually done this stupid thing twice now, you would think I have learned...
I have a young son that still requires a car seat. I hate to carry a purse and often just carry a wallet. Well lots of times, I put the wallet on top of my jeep to put my son in the carseat. Twice now, my older son starts talking to me and I lose my concentration, get in the car and drive off with my wallet still on top of my jeep. Both times, I have had to go through the process of calling all my cards, calling the credit reporting bureau and the cops! You would think I would have learned. But I have to say both times honest people have found it and returned it to me. It's now my lucky wallet, run over twice, but still in great shape.

Drinking and driving for entertainment as a high-schooler. During snowstorms. And I didn't know it was dumb at the time. I think biology prevents teen-agers from realizing their mortality. Otherwise, we'd never take risks.
Other dumb things:
Putting the gallon of milk in the cupboard after my midnight glass, then not finding it for a day or two.
Nearly running myself over while test-driving a Jeep Cherokee. I put the truck in park (I thought), then got out and walked behind it to switch sides with my husband. When the truck rolled into me, I realized what was going on.
As a child, I lived on a cattle feedlot. There were often truckers who would park there overnight after they'd delivered their livestock loads, and I would knock on the doors of their cabs and ask to see inside. Nothing bad ever happened -- they were always super nice to me. But wow -- scary, huh? I guess that's not really dumb on my part, it's dumb on my parents' part (or society?). There are so many things I did growing up that seem insane now -- playing in the woods, swimming in the river (just kids, never supervised), tearing around the countryside on ATV's.
I'm glad I grew up that way. My daughter, well, the padded foam for her room is on order. ;-)

Man goes for an interview with a stuffy old CEO. The guy interviewing for the job keeps calling this old man, Mr. Dumb Ass, he's read the name plate on the desk wrong. The old guy finally corrects him and says, "it's Doomas". The expressions on the faces are hillareous!

One of my favorite was a couple of months ago when the Race for the Cure was about to happen here (for those of you in the dark - a huge race held nationally in various big cities to support breast cancer research). One of the options for Race for the Cure if your not inclined to go run or walk it is to "Sleep in for the Cure" you still pay your money and get a shirt, albeit different than the shirt for those of us that go out and work for it.
At least locally here, LA Weight Loss Centers, was the sponsor for the Sleep in for the Cure. Drove me bonkers everytime I saw it and just laughed at what it said about LA Weight Loss Centers and their program.

Can'tStopMe - I think my husband repeated the Doomas line a million times while that commericial was running!

Then they all look at each other and say that none of them has any phones.
Cue the great deal on the cell phones. Stupid Stupid Stupid.

The most memorable commercial of all time for me.. (not in a good way) was the Norwich Union one.. "Look it's Patrick, he just took out life insurance.. BLAH BLAH BLAH.." NOW PLAY THIS every 10 minutes for the next decade!!!!!!!!! AARG!!!
and fast forward to now, there is a different Relacore one on the cable listing channel here.. it is also played every two seconds.. oh and don't forget the Xanthrax 3.. it is so in your face i want to kick the tv!!
(as you can see im not a big fan of commercials!)

These were on the morning news. A bit of a novelty I think but you just gotta get a load of these sodas which are sold in a package of 5. I'm trying to decide if anyone in my circle of friends or family is deserving of this gift. Here's the flavours:
1. Turkey & Gravy
2. Corn on the Cob
3. Broccoli Casserole
4. Butter Pecan Pie (probably the most pallatable)
5. Smoked Salmon
NOW DON'T THOSE SOUND POSITIVELY YUMMY!!!!!!! I think the only reason why they'll be sold is just for the sheer ridiculousness of it. Ho, ho, ho

All of you know the work and Larry Frascarelli and I are doing to help Julie and her family. Countless hours working on the website and browsing the internet looking for websites/owners that are willing to support our efforts with a Julie banner.
Well yesterday we scored a big one. whatsyourdeal.com and the owner Peter Sunshine have posted our Julie banner as well as made several special offers to where you can sign up for these free trials and we will receive a donation for Julie. These are really simple things to do and all it takes is a few minutes of your time.
Please visit the website http://www.whatsyourdeal.com/ and support Pete by joining the website and post a reply to his message about helping Julie.
The link with Julie's information and the specific charity links is:
http://www.whatsyourdeal.com/forums/8498-please-read-show-true-christmas-spirit.html#post11183
Included in that message are special links to where when people complete them...just taking a few minutes of time....as much as $8/offer will be donated to our efforts for Julie. What's great about this is....you're not spending money...but at the same time you're donating!!
We will also have these links up on our special julie website sometime this week.
Show your holiday spirit and visit the link above and sign-up and help Julie along the way.
Happy Holidays!
Stephanie

After the Child Psychologist watched Cameron for about 30 minutes, she looked up at me, and I am sitting in the chair wiping sweat off my forehead. He was trying to walk while he was in the stroller "backwards" and I had to struggle with him until I took his little butt into the restroom and he got a spanking...
Her first comment to me was, " Is he like this all day?"
I said yes
Her 2nd comment to me was," Do you drink?"
I said on occassion! and laughed..
She commended me in how I interact with Cameron and some life decisions that I had to make these past couple of months....However, she did say that I would be getting State support in that I could have someone come to my house and work with Cameron and watch him while I go and do things, like see a Movie, Grocery Shop, etc..
and I am also seeing the school board at lunch today, they will send their team over to the daycare and work with Cameron and may even come to the house, depending on what they see.
So nevertheless, I have a long road ahead of me...

Oh, sweetie. You are such a strong person and seem to be continually going through more and more difficult battles. You always rise to the occasion.
I'm not the kind of person who thinks God gives us challenges for a reason (like if a person dies, for example), but you being you -- being so strong and enduring -- I just have to wonder. Maybe this is Cameron's challenge and you're his champion.

Udenia, I haven't posted to you because I just don't have an answer or any idea how how to comfort you, but I do listen, I feel for you, I know my foster child was ADD/HD and a real hand full, I got on Prozac, the dr said the same thing, is he like this all the time! "YES" and 2 of my friends have children with Autiusm I see what they go thru, it's hard, but it's your love and consistancy that will help them to make it through. remember, all the feeling that build up inside of you are 100 times worst to them b/c they can't express what they are feeling to you, it's tough on everyone, I can listen anytime, so pm me anytime , ok?
You are always in my prayers, you're strong, you have a strong heart and your love with see it thur .

Udenia,
Wish I could offer more than just moral support, but I've never experienced anything like you are going through. It is good that the state is stepping up to the plate to give you both the support you need.

I accepted their offer, then went in to see my boss, after talking to him and listening to him for more than an hour, he made his last comment......then I said "I would really like that back", meaning my letter of resignation.
He said "as far as anyone else is concerned, this was a simple meeting"....no one will ever know about his if you don't tell them.
So, I'm staying at the bank afterall.

I had not been "looking" for another job, this one just presented itself. I wasn't really sure my job was secure...I've been thru company buyouts 3 times in the last 10-12 years and 2 times I lost my job....go from making 500-600 a week to drawing 200 in unemployment and it can be financially devestating.
I told him that I couldn't put my family in that situation again and that I needed assurance that my job was secure and that I would be afforded the opportunity for advancement.......he gave me both.
He told me his plan is to take me from being Head Teller (you guys know I'm good at that job :) to being Head Teller/Branch Manager to being Branch Manager and it will take time maybe 3-5 years but that's what he's going to tell the Bank that has purchased us.
I feel better about staying!!

You go girl I was in a similar situation. I was offered a job in the same field of settlements. My boss tried to get me to stay and I just wanted the same thing reassurance of my job since its slow right now.
Well had one day of the new job and didn't go back.
They gave me what I wanted and I'm still here.

Today is Day 3 of Challenge 5!!!!!!!!!!
I had totally lost count with my weeks. I guess that means that I'm not really setting 12 week goals for myself anymore, just basically plugging along. Oh well, that seems to be the way its going to be till Jan 2. I've only taken 2 or 3 one week breaks but not between challenges. Between C4 & C5 no one week break however I did do very well with the "free day" in celebration last weekend if my memory serves me well LOL! I don't know if its a good thing or bad thing when you stop counting weeks??? : )

Tracey I think it really doesn't matter that you're not counting-You're living the lifestyle now!!! That's what my goal is! And I just have to say that you look AMAZING!!! Have you stuck with the BFL exercise or are you incorporating extra stuff?
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1967 posts) at 04:08 PM
Happy Birthday Jeremy & Larry.
Healthyme - I did start a new program at around C4W4; its a bit more intense than BFL but in a different way. I'll probably do another "old fashioned" BFL challenge again sometime after January - by then I'll be good & bored with this.
I'm not incorporating anything "extra" really except something like the humungous extra large avocado I just incorporated into my salad! arrrgh
Body for Life Forum Message by healthyme (17 posts) at 04:16 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by Blondie26 (130 posts) at 01:37 PM
Ok, I need advice from my BFL friends. Now this isn't about body for life or eating healthy, or workouts. This is about my 4yr old son.
My daycare called me a little bit ago. Michael was screaming at them. Kicking the teacher, pounding his fist on the table and shoving the chairs around. Throwing a huge fit. All because the teacher said that he couldn't watch a new movie since he was not listening at quiet time.
Now this has been going on and off for awhile ever since our other son was born. We try talking with him. I give him extra attention. Nothing!
He will be starting school next year and I'm at a lost of what to do. I've taken all toys away. His room is bare. I've kept him in his room when we get home in the evening.
I'm stumped.
Should we not give him anything at Christmas and tell him Santa didn't bring anything for yu since you were bad. I don't want to do that but. I'm stuck in a tough spot.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!!
I really need help in this part.
Your friend
Dawn

My son's are 4 years apart also, we did have a little problem similar to this when our second was born.
Matt's behavior improved significantly when I started including him in the baby's care. I made him responsible for baby wipes when it was changing time, made him responsible for shampoo when it was bath time, made him responsible for the pacifier when it was the babies bedtime, etc.
I also made sure that we had time together in the evenings for bathtime or a story, etc.
I definatley wouldn't try the no santa threat.
Body for Life Forum Message by Blondie26 (130 posts) at 01:45 PM
Hubby suggested the no santa I can't bring myself to it. I do include him in on the baby stuff but it hasn't helped.
He is great with Brandon!
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1056 posts) at 01:48 PM
I could not do the no santa thing either. That may bring out more anger, but then I am a softie when it comes to my girls and they are teenagers. I love them so much.
I would do like she said, be sure to include him all the time. I did that. My kids are 3.5 years apart and at first we had that problem, but I made the older one part of the help with the younger one and she felt included. Be sure to make one on one time with each as well.

Body for Life Forum Message by gymbeamin' (1190 posts) at 02:00 PM
the older children were just the ONLY children for so long and they don't want to relinquish that position in the family.
It takes time to help them to see that the baby won't (and couldn't possibly) take their place in the family.
Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (68 posts) at 03:47 PM
I would definately quash the No Santa idea. Kids remember certain things for a long time. Just go the recent thread "when was the 1st time you were called fat" to see how long kids rememebr things. This could be traumatic for him, and it sounds like he is already having a traumatic time for some reason. Go to www.parents.com and to the community page. They have experts there answering questions, you can search for similar post describing a simialr post. I put a post in about Onica waking up screaming after sleeping for 3 - 4 hours, and I had an answer from a doctor within about 24 hours. I like the idea about including him. For some reason, I think I read somewhere that is part of a solution for what you are experiencing. Andrew
Body for Life Forum Message by healthyme (17 posts) at 04:25 PM
I don't have any kids of my own but I'm a teacher and from experience in that area I have found that concentrating on the positive and not the negative can work miracles. Praise him for every good thing he does, even the smallest things, and don't focus so much on the negative. You may already have tried this one so I don't know if it will help too much but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

4 year olds get sooooo frustrated by the world! Just consider this a moment(even though it goes on & on) in his life. Before you know it he will move on from it. I have 4 kids from 4-18 so I have seen this many a time. Don't get caught up in it and listen to your heart it will tell you what he needs. Santa is a refuge never use him as anything else.
Body for Life Forum Message by PumpedUp (1 posts) at 06:50 PM
My son was 4-1/2 when my daughter was born. Same reaction. There is a lot of change in his world and he doesn't have the life experience to know what to do with his feelings and ultimately his frustration at having to share Mom and Dad. If you take his toys away and Santa - you are reinforcing that he is "bad" Have you considered a child psychologist/social worker? 2 books that are helpful 1.) The Explosive Child 2.)How to talk so kids will listen and how to listen so kids will talk. Really helpful books!!

Oh my gosh. I think it is too extreme to take everything away - plus threaten no Christmas. This sounds very traumatizing. My son is 12 this month. Do you not get the tv show The Nanny where you live? My son was never as troublesome as I see on this show or what you describe but I like the idea they use often which is to reward good behavior and punish bad behaviour by providing a consequence or taking away something or a privilege. At 4 yrs old this is a good time to learn this lesson. Always speak in a calm even tone and use reason. As a parent, you are in charge and the child has to learn that. We can't be screaming back at them - this perpetuates this behaviour in them. I'm no expert but I'm trying to give suggestions I see from the show and books. Its not easy but you will be doing you, your family your school and everyone that ever comes in contact with your son a favour by nipping this in the bud now. No one likes to be around a poorly behaved person. Best of luck to you and I hope you find what works for you and you have a happy and healthy relationship with your boy.

Hang in there. My kids are 7, 15 and 17. I know that every phase is just that... a phase. It will pass. However, the most important thing you can do to give him a sense of security is to be very CONSISTENT. Not always easy. Don't make idle threats. He will learn not to trust you. If you say you are going to remove him if he does something one more time, and he does it again, remove him. If you tell him he is going to have a time out and he repeats the action, give the time out. It is the toughest thing to do. I have had to leave a full basket of groceries in the store to follow through with a threat. And when I have failed to do it...I've lost ground. And he/she has suffered because of it. A child with clear and consistent boundaries and rules is a very secure child.
And like Jennifer said, reward the good behavior. Have a special popcicle or a special walk with mom or a song on your lap if he is a good listener. My sister sings alot with her children. They love it. Sing a song, read a book. Build a tent with a blanket over the sofa and sit in there with him. Try to find a few fun moments with him...even tho you are stretched to the max.
good luck. I hate to say it...but little kids have little problems...just wait till he's 17!

Now that I have your attention and it is only 3 more days until free day I thought I would post some photos of cakes that I have made for customers.
Yes they are all gym related!
The nude lady cake was for one of the guys that I train in the gym at work and the other cake was for the new gym in town that I don't work at but train in.I did like making all the muscles on that one - one muscle in particular was fun to do.
My kitchen is always full of cakes but luckily I have got the willpower (at the moment) not to eat them

Body for Life Forum Message by Shoe (8 posts) at 02:02 PM
This is a rather lame question, but I'm trying to be very rigorous in following BFL. Every now and then, I enjoy a nice piece of sugarless gum, for both it's breath-freshening capabilites and also as a stress reliever. Having something to chew on can keep me from biting the heads of particular clients.
I can still have my occasional gum, right? I'm trying not to put anything into my mouth that doesn't have some kind of nutritional value, but is it okay to make an exception here?
Megan

I chew Freedent.....no problems for me
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (234 posts) at 03:37 PM
I eat gum, but only after I've eaten something, and it has to be sugar free.
You have to be careful because gum stimulates the acid in your stomach which is used to dislove the food during digestion. This is some seriously strong acid, and when you chew gum you're basically sending a message to your stomach which says, "Get ready! I'm going to be swallowing something in a few seconds!" But you don't. This acid therefore seeps into your stomach and irritates it. Ever heard your stomach rumble when eating gum? This unnecessary secretion of acid can cause stomach ulsers and cramps, so don't substitute it for food when your hungry, thinking it will curb your appitite. Pick something healthy up and eat it. It's better for you in the long run.

i do the mornings during the week, but on the weekends when my sleep time doesn't need structure, i go whenever i want. it's important for me to have some time that i feel like i can do on my whims.
after i go out on fri or sat, and i'm up late, i love to do a cardio at the gym at-like- 1 or 2 am. i turn on techno and run way faster than i ever do in the mornings. and afterwards i get the steam room all to myself! aaaahhhhh. it's the perks, right.
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (588 posts) at 10:47 PM
I have to do all of my workouts in the evening. On a normal weekday I have to get up at 5:30am, and I too am not a morning person! I tried doing cardio in the mornings, but it lasted one week! Not only was it very difficult for me to get my butt out of bed, but I didn't have any energy! The best time for me is early evening, but unfortunately that doesn't work out with my schedule either, so I always work out late at night. As for slowing down progress, I have made some good progress, but don't really know if I'd be doing any better on a morning schedule because I have nothing to compare it too! It may be slowing me down, but since I'm in this for the long haul anyway, as long as I'm seeing SOME progress than I know something is working!

This is a strange thing. 2, maybe 3, weeks ago while running on the treadmill my right calf seemed to go "pop", right in the middle of the calf. It hurt like heck and made me limp. I slowed down and kept doing my cardio but it was very, very sore. I sat in the hot tub afterwards and it felt better but I still had a limp. I took it easier on the cardio the rest of the week by using our elliptical at home instead of the treadmill at the gym. The calf has been feeling better and I forgot about it until today when on the treadmill I felt it start to get that same pain. I slowed down from 7.5 mph to 3, then up to 4 fairly quickly. I continued my cardio for another 13 minutes, varying my speed from 3 - 4 - 7.5, to 8, to 8.5, and back thru that cycle. I never heard it "pop" but it did tighten up like crazy, and I am limping again all day. I can force my way out of the limp but it has me curious as to what it could be. Someone here at the office told me a horror story that his calk did the same thing and it was the muscle that actually tore, sidelining him for 2 1/2 months. Any thoughts, anyone? Andrew
Body for Life Forum Message by healthyme (17 posts) at 06:49 PM
I'd give the treadmill a rest for a while and stick to the elliptical. If the pain doesn't go away in week I'd go check it out at the docs.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitchic25802 (352 posts) at 07:55 PM
I'd take it easy on the treadmill also. Sounds like you could have tore the muscle a bit. Take it easy, have it checked out and don't try to push through the pain or you could do more damage than good.
Take care.

I have a friend who ran 4 marathons a year for years, and he was a sub 3 hour runner, meaning he was pretty good. He was out running one day and felt the same kind of thing you mention. He ignored it for weeks before he went to the doctor and found that it was a muscle rip. It never healed properly and it totally ended his running career since he never could run without it knotting up on him. I'd get it looked at NOW!

If anyone, (even familly members) tell them they're fat/skinny/ugly/stupid or whatever, turn it around and say to your child in a loud clear voice infront of everyone, "Well, isn't that person who told you that really horrible? They're not the smartest or prettiest person in the world are they, so they shouldn't be saying things like that? You're the most special person in the world to me, so it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks does it?" That's the kind of thing I wished my parents had said to me. If you have ever said anything just remember that cruel words stick faster then nice words, you have to apologise for it and pay them a compliment. They'll appreciate it.

G - good to see ya again and happy to see I have someone with the same issues :)
One thing I have tried is to use more of the snack and breakfast recipes in EFL rather than the dinners. Instead of lunch, I would have a larger snack. Just a quick thought on how to switch things up!
Also like the suggestions of pork tenderloin as well as turkey tenderloin (yeah, I know, turkey isn't a big stretch from chicken but it IS a little dif't!)

Here's something that i have tought of doing but haven't gotten around to it yet :) Maybe someone can try it first:
Make a list of 50 simple things that you want to do for yourself but can't seem to find the time for (painting your nails, finding a recipe on the internet, a home facial - anything!)
Then, when tempted to stray from clean eating, get out this list and do one of the items on it instead!

What seems to help me stay on track is the tracker and having a BFL buddie to answer too. If I answer to someone else besides myself it helps.
Also lately I've been dreaming that I've been eating unauthorized meals. I wake up feeling sick to my stomach and guilty. Weird since its a dream.

I think tinkerbell hit it best as far as the way I do BFL. #3 is so true. I think people are telling you not to finish because you already look great to them. That is why you should continue, it is not up to them, it is up to you to say if you should or shouldn't finsh. Champions finish, the rest give excuses.

seeing myself in 10 year old pictures, at 202 lbs.
that's enough motivation to keep me going....I don't ever want to be back there again. That was a different person.....a person I don't ever want to see staring back at me from the mirror.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (15 posts) at 04:17 PM
My main motivation has to be my wife... As I stated in my profile, everyday I would come home from work and do nothing but Veg and even the small task of climbing one flight of stairs from the basement (where my TV is) started to become quite a chore and really left me out of breath. Anyway, my wife is a wonderful person and helps me a lot around the house, laundry, cooking, cleanind, etc. My jobs mainly consist of working outside in the yard and such, however, my wifes health is failing rapidly due to CF (cystic Fibrosis) and she, like Julie Whitt, will require a double lung transplant in the near future. She will need me for support more then ever when the time comes and I want to be physically able to be there for her and help her through the challenging times ahead. My wife is 35 and for those of you that know about CF know that that is a remarkable age to get to with CF. I look at her and see that she has worked so hard her entire life just to have life, it makes me look at myself and the years I spent totally abusing my body and lungs(ex-smoker) and know that if I have even half of her motivation for life, I will look like Arnie by the time I finish my challenges. I'm only in week 6 of my first challenge and I have lost a little weight but gained a whole lot of energy and can tell that I will live Body for Life till the end of mine. It is a great program that my wife, post transplant, says she will follow to help her regain strenght and proper nutrition for a long lasting, healthy lifestyle. As you can tell... I'm remaining positive that everything will go as smooth as possible with her transplant.
I'd like to appoligize for such a long post, but you asked my motivation... well, there it is.
BTW, everyone here doing this BFL is a great motivator also. I must admit that when I feel down about any part of this program, I log on this website to see awesome transformations and read a lot of encourging feedback so that I stay focused on my goals.
Thank you, everyone!

Okay so you had one off day. Look at it, learn from it and forget it. Tomorrow is a new day full of new found energy and strength.

Linda, that brought tears to my eyes! and Patti that story is so sweet, your husband definitely sounds like a keeper!
I really can't think of any off the top of my head. I really appreciate the compliments that are so unexpected and sincere. Like, today, for example I got 2 emails from BFLers on the guestbook who saw my pic on Julie Whitt's frappr map. They both just decided to email me and tell me I was beautiful! (Chris the Audiotimekeeper man went so far as to call gorgeous and a hottie!) Its just fun when you receive unexpected, genuine compliments. It really lifts your spirits, usually when you are down too. I think those are tender mercies from the Lord when he blesses us with other people in our life to lift us up. And I had a girl in my dieteics class come up to me after class last week and tell me how smart she thought I was. How nice is that!
So mine aren't very grandiose, but those compliments made me smile today!!

I am having some personal struggles right now and unfortunately one day here at work I let it get to me after a phone conversation with my mother. It is a very bad situation and my co-worker knows about it and came in and I was crying...she said "it's just not fair" and I was thinking I know...its not, its a horrible situation....but she finishes and says "you are still the most beautiful woman I have ever seen even when you cry!"....she made me laugh, and made me feel really good. Right now that compliment stands out to me.
PS Linda, you made me cry.....

#1--Linda, I love your story.....nothing better than a parent that feels WANTED by their child. Most of our children aren't happy with the fact that they have loving parents that CARE who they hang out with, where they are and what their doing.....they think this CRAMPS their style...they don't see it as what a truly devoted, loving parent does.
I have a step-dad that is more of a father than my real father was, I got him when I was 15.....and he had to work for my love. He's the best!!!

I've been married to the man for 24 years and 5 months and I have to say he doesn't go around giving me compliments (he should be ashamed); anyway I was getting ready for work this morning and just right out of the blue he said:
"You are the sexiest woman I have ever seen in my life".
I thought well, DAMN, and why don't you say things like that everyday, every hour, every minute.....but I didn't say it, I just thought it.....then I said:
"in your entire life?"
He said "yes"
Now, that's a comliment

We were getting a new tennant and the downstairs needed a new oven, and I wanted one for myself, too. So I went to a scratch and dent store with Reagan and told the older gentleman there that I wanted to purchase 2 gas ovens for my apartments. He looked at me and my baby and said, "you own property? The secret is to plan and when you have to be away from home pack your food and take it with you.
I have 11 eating events in the next 3 weeks. I have really had to plan my free days for 3 of them and will eat before I go for the rest.
EFL is an awesome book.

I agree, planning is key.
I cook up a weeks worth of chicken and barley on the weekends so that I dont have to worry about at least one meal during the week. Plus, I make sure to cook double the portion size of anythign I cook out of the EFL book so that I can take leftovers to work with me the following day.

Daisy, I hear where you're coming from. Eating 6xday is really not that hard when you make your morning and afternoon snacks easy things like an apple and string cheese. By the way- the Enchilads are YUMMY in the EFL book! And you even get your dessert too!

I've also tried the Baked Halibut which surprisingly my husband liked a lot.
The Meatloaf, though, he did not like. Me either.
Enjoy!

We haven't had a bad meal yet from the EFL book.
Asian stir fry, meatloaf (and I don't even like meatloaf), chile rellenos, golden pancakes, ad nauseum!

We're cooking out of EFL like crazy at our house and love it! Last night we had the Asian Beef Stir-Fry and then the Pumpkin Cheesecake later in the evening, we're having Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches tonight, tomorrow is Chile Rellenos, Friday morning I'm making the fortified French toast...it's all yummy!!
As for eating 6x a day, after a week and half of BFL, I don't know how I survived only eating three times a day. My afternoon headaches are completely gone and I don't have energy lags like I did before. It's fantastic!

I always stir up things with my 2 cents about this so please know this is only an opinion. EFL has GREAT tasting meals, but they are not for getting a BFL as much as maintaining a BFL. Don't get me wrong, I lost fat while eating EFL, but when I got back to my plain jane food I started to firm up. I just think EFL has higher sodium than what I want and it really taste so good that I can't stop at 1 portion. I would suggest EFL as a freeday or a maintaining process, but if you are hardcore, watch it.
Kenny
Body for Life Forum Message by KatieFeld-mom (77 posts) at 03:12 PM
Here's a question for the cheesecake lovers:
Is there any hint of a cottage cheese taste or consistency? I hate hate hate cottage cheese, but I would really like to somehow get it in because it is so full of protein.
Body for Life Forum Message by Shoe (8 posts) at 03:17 PM
The cheesecake in the EFL cookbook doesn't use cottage cheese; it calls for ricotta, so no, no cottage cheese taste!
Megan
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (663 posts) at 07:33 PM
Nasa, I do agree with you that the EFL book is not as hardcore as the BFL book. If you want the best possible 12 weeks, or youre going for the money, then I would agree with you and say stay away from it. The meals are certainly not "balanced" protein/carb wise like Bill suggests.
The reason I do suggest this book is because it really keeps things interesting. If I didnt have that book im not sure how I would be doing. I think as long as you watch your portion sizes you will be fine. Extra sodium is not really an issue as long as your not going on stage the next day. This is body/eating for life.
Body for Life Forum Message by nasa10202004 (106 posts) at 08:39 PM
Chuck great point about EFL and keeping things interesing. As a person that started out at 270, I had to get results fast otherwise I don't think I would be able to last. Eating plain jane was the only way I felt I could do it(and working out and cardio), just like EFL is the way you do it.
It is not about the money, I eat this way because like you say I want the best possible 12 weeks. Besides, as an overeater, if it taste good I eat until it's gone!
Great post brother!

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (663 posts) at 05:17 AM
I respectfully disagree with Linda. I think casein protein would be a better choice than soy.
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (144 posts) at 07:35 AM
My guess is that the correct TOTAL portion size for your shake is more like two or three scoops. One scoop of protein powder is almost NEVER the entire amount you need. So, if you did two scoops and added 8 ounces of liquid that would be more like a meal replacement.
Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (248 posts) at 07:41 AM
whey protein is a good choice for a post workout meal..because its a faster protein source it will get to where it needs to go faster. and chuckdiese is correct, casien is a better source of protein than soy.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (144 posts) at 12:45 PM
I'm not so sure that it is o.k. to just say one source of protein is better than another, because there are so many variations in quality. Personally, I think egg white protein is the absolute best, because there is no carb and no fat in it at all. The only advantage that casein has is that it is very slowly digested, which is good for late night, bad for pre and post workout. Soy is decent protein, especially for ladies, though certainly for guys there are questions about how it affects certain hormone levels. I use soy in a shake that I also blend with whey, casein and egg proteins.
Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (992 posts) at 02:07 PM
After some research throught the ISSA they state that raw whey is number one and number two is the whole egg. I like mikes post above as well.

Good morning,
All of you know the work and Larry Frascarelli and I are doing to help Julie and her family.

Thanks for posting this. I ordered mine immediately. It will be great to have a constant reminder on my wrist. I intend on wearing it on the wrist I would most often tend to reach for food with, and thus see it and stop.
With the holidays fast approaching this would make an oustanding gift, and its for a great cause.

I have arrived in New York and am just BESIDE myself with excitement. I just posted a blog about it, but I wanted to make sure and tell you all too just in case you don't read the blogs.
I flew over the city and about DIED it was so beautiful. I've never seen skyscrapers like this before. There was a man holding a sign with my name on in meeting me at the airport to take me in a car to the hotel. I have never in my life had a man with a sign meeting me when I got off a plane.
The hotel is gorgeous and is right by Times Square. I was expecting a tiny little room, but it's huge.
Tonight we all have supper together and then tomorrow we have a press conference. Hopefully, we can get some national press for BFL and "start spreadin' the news"....I know, I'm such a dork but doesn't it just make you want to sing?!?!?!
I'm going to go check out my sister's (Mojo) final pictures now because I heard she posted them. I'm proud of you Malissa.
I'll keep you all posted. Thank you again Trackers for your support and kindness during this time. I wouldn't be here without you.
hugs, cheryl

During the last week of the team challenge I would post to my team what I did each day and I had my best week of the challenge to date - 3 lbs!!!!
So, I figure if it's working, don't stop. Unfortunately the team challenge is over . . . but I'm not. So I'm going to subject the Tracker community at large to my posting.
I do hope that if anyone else out there hopes this will work for them, please feel free to jump on board.

Hey Laurie. So how did the results go for the November challenge?
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1633 posts) at 04:16 PM
Hi gang!
As many of you know, I've been having a rough time over the last several weeks with illness. As a result. I haven't worked out very much or stayed on top of my food plan. It has been extremely frustrating to get up every day, mentally ready to roll, but being hindered by constant illness. And when I am sick and exhausted I tend to eat what doesn't take much energy to prepare (can you say fast food?!). As you can imagine, instead of seeing pounds come off, I've seen about 10-15 come back since the end of my 3rd challenge in September. Some of that was due to 'celebrating' the success of my first 3 challenges, but without the illness I would have been back on track and making good progress by now.... I have been very tempted to just say "Screw it!" until my illness issues get under control... For me, if I'm not working out regularly, I tend to slide on the food believing (falsely!) that it won't help much to follow the food program until I'm exercising again. And when you're sick, it's tempting to 'take it easy' and not be diligent about what you eat... But today, I got just a little bit angry about the situation...
"Damn it, Jim! I know you've been taking a beating from illness over the last couple months. But I will not stand for even one more pound creeping back on my body! I don't care if I'm sick constantly for the next 6 months I will not give up or give in! Even if you can't work out or ride your bike, you don't have to put anything in your mouth that you don't want! You must find some way to stay on top of the food and only eat foods that are consistent with your BFL program. Come on, buddy! I know people are telling you to 'just take it easy', to relax, enjoy the holidays, and then get serious about your program once you are feeling better... But we've been saying that for several weeks now and we are still at square one... So you're going to have to dig deeper, Jim. There's no way I'm going to settle for watching the weight come back. I'm sorry that this chronic illness has complicated your fitness and weight management efforts so much for so long... but what else are you going to do? I know you Jim... If you're even half way well, you'll be in the gym and on the bike. But for whatever reason, that hasn't been working out lately. So for now, get a hold of the food situation and trust me - you can still make progress even when you are sick. And buddy, you just have to have faith that it's all going to work out...
And besides Jim, you've got a book to write... I don't think there's many people interested in a book about a guy who ALMOST lost all the weight and for sure nobody wants to read a book about a guy who gained it all back! Frankly, Jim, I know you wouldn't let that happen... you've come too far to come up short or turn back... Think about all the other people with chronic illness who are desperate for a glimmer of hope that they can conquer their weight problems even with a debilitating illness. You know in your heart buddy that God has chosen you to help others by your example - that this is about so much more than losing weight... Don't let yourself down...and don't let them down... So that only leaves one real choice... Yep! Keep on truckin'!!!"
Thanks for letting me vent... I know it's inevitable that we'll all have those times where we just can't seem to make progress and we're tempted to just drop our program... But I think what I'm learning during this frustrating challenge is that it is always crucial to do your best, even when it seems that your best isn't enough... because in the long run it will be...
I guarantee that if you quit your BFL program that you will regret it, even if you weren't making any progress... And likewise, there is no way you'll ever regret having done your best - even when it didn't seem to make any difference...
Jim

I need you Jim. I tend to get sick easily and loose some of the gains I made. we both know that in times of sickness it is even so much more important to take care of our bodies. This web site and the people on it are really important to me, and so are you. Don't let me down, K? Let's be examples of what it means not to give up.
Body for Life Forum Message by She Bear (30 posts) at 05:34 PM
You are so inspirational! This post is timely as the cold & flu season are upon us ready to destroy our BFL challenges. Be sick and then move on from it cuz being strong is right around the corner!
Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (909 posts) at 05:39 PM
Jim, your best already HAS made a difference, for you and for many others. I agree with your observation in that if you are stymied in one direction, there is no point in throwing your hands up and saying that's it, to hell with it and everything else. That's what the majority of people on the planet do, and I for one won't settle for that from you. So Jim buddy, dig deep, find another door or window, or just make your own... and blow us all away!
Yours in Health,
Kerry

I don't know what I caught, but man being sick is horrible. I missed out on my workouts for the past two days. The only saving grace is that I lost my appetite, so I hardly ate a thing.
My poor wife after taking care of me all day yesterday, woke up at 2:00 am with all the same symptoms I had. She appearantly caught whatever I had.
But we are both doing better, and are headed to the gym tomorrow.

O.K. Ladies. I have been reading a lot of fitness magazines and the fitness and figure competitors are always quoted about how they "lift heavy." But....they never mention just how much they are lifting when they work with weights. If they do..I haven't seen the figures.
My question to you tonight?
When you work out with weights and hit your tens, how many pounds are you lifting?
Example. lat pulldowns, bicep curls, bench press, leg press.
While I know its not a good idea to compare my progress with others...I'd like to have some indication of what "lifting heavy" means for the average BFL tracker member.
Thanks!
Michelle

I was pleasantly surprised at the surprise I got from a co-worker and my boyfriend when I said I can do 100 lbs on the Flye Machine (chest). I don't know where I compare with others but this reaction was...nice to see.

Well this is only my second week so I'm probably not the best person to compare to.
My 10's are:
70-80lbs-lat pulldowns
12.5-15lbs-bicep curls
15-17.5lbs-bench press
70lbs-leg extensions
90lbs-hamstring curls

I have been so stressed out lately, I am totally burned out.
I am working a new full time job for the last 8 weeks and I hate it. 4 weeks ago, I started a part time job to help with finances and it is the job I always wanted. But it is only a part time job, maybe in time it will become full time.So anyway, I am working about 65 hours a week.In the meantime I am trying to end a long term relationship with my boyfriend of 12 years. I think if I was married I could file for divorce and it would be alot simpler than this.
So between these two, I am so stressed that I can't wake up in the morning, and I am having anxiety attacks now. I really want to start my cardio and weights but I can't find a way to fit it in. I have lost weight, but the flab remains. Any Sugestions?

I understand what you are going through, really I do! I have a full-time job and just had to pick up a part-time job just to try and make ends meet! It leaves very little time for workouts. My solution is not the best though. I can't seem to get up early enough to do any workouts in the mornings, so I have to do mine late at night, usually around 10pm. I'm sure this has affected the rate of my progress, and has contributed to my insomnia problems flaring up again. But I figure slow progress is better than no progress. Juggling 2 jobs and 4 kids can be very taxing so I know how you feel! All I can say is, try to prioritize your day and see where your workouts would best fit in each day. If your work schedules vary, your workout times may vary. The point is, have a plan! Set your times, and try your best to stick to them! I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to skip a workout because I'm too worn out at night! But..I have missed only 4 workouts in the last 5 months. It CAN be done, but it's going to take some planning and you may have to talk yourself into going some days, but do it anyway! Workouts can be SO great in relieving stress if you really get into it! Sorry to hear your added stress with the relationship, as ending any relationship is difficult. Even more so when you have been together so long! Hang in there! You CAN get through this!
HUGS!
Jennifer

NOT ME! I'm going to stay on idle until January 2 and then start with all the amateurs. Haven't done that in years but it will be fun. There are a couple of contests I want to enter that don't start their new challenges until after the first of the year, so that's how I will do all that. In the meantime, I will keep working out and taking supplements but also not getting freaked out about a little fat that appears this time of the year.
