Hi everyone, Got my first thermo dynamyx yesterday. After reading these posts, am really confused how to take them..Pleas advise. Need my sleep so how much is minimum and when.thanks all

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (105 posts) at 09:51 AM:
Using a thermogenic is a matter of some trial and error. Different people have different reactions. First thing, always, always, ALWAYS drink a full 24 oz of H2O before taking your thermogenic. Do not take them on an empty and dry stomach. It's not fun at all. If you have never used them before, start with one cap before the workout and one mid-afternoon. Learn how that feels. Then work to two in the morning and 1 in the afternoon, then finally 2 am, 2 mid afternoon. Do not take them past 5pm. If you are taking them later then that, for heaven's sake do not take 3. Sleep will not be your friend. :) Thermogenics are a great tool. But they are powerful stimulants. Listen to your body. If you constantly have bad reactions to ANY thermo product, stop using it. That said, I love the stuff. I like the burn. If it feels a little too intense, drinking some extra water usually clears things up.

TcStone, There is no reason anyone has to pay individual rates for a room(Unless that is what they prefer) There are several people from around the world looking for roommates to split the cost. You can post on Tracker for someone to share the room &/or post on our official BFL cruise site's message board under "Roommate Anyone?" www.BodyforLIFEcruise.com An inside cabin with roommates can cost as little as $130/day. It's great hearing about all the Tracker folks that reserved their cabin & are using the BFL cruise as extra motivation to reach their goals! That is how this whole event first started... Sea you all then, Jerry

Udenia- I don't think any person on the planet ever wants to know the pain you are going through now. It's one of any parents worst nightmares. It's okay to be angry, upset, and hurt. We all know that you will bounce back, because that's the kind of person you are. I want to offer you some food for thought. I'm dyslexic, with some other associated learning disabilities thrown in for good measure. My mother to this day blames herself for many of the problems I've encountered along the way. What I want to tell you is what I tell her. I don't blame her. As frusterating as things have been at various points in time, as angry as the situation make me, I've never, ever blamed her. This is just part of who I am. The challenges I face along the way are part of what make me the person I am now, and the person I can be in the future. Without the dyslexia I wouldn't be me. Now I know that autism is more serious than dyslexia. My challenges are small compared to what your son faces. I just ask that you remember this. He loves you unconditionally. His reaction to you when he sees you walk in the door tells you this. Don't blame yourself for this, because I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

Body for Life Forum Message by Persephone (332 posts) at 07:50 AM:
Hi Udenia-- I just wanted to tell you that doctors don't know everything! When I was 9 months old, I contracted meningitis. The doctors told my mother to call my father, my grandparents, my aunts, uncles and cousins. Then he told everyone that I was going to die and if they wanted to help me then they should pray that I would die quickly. He told my family that his team were going to amputate my legs but as I had "no chance" of survival there wasn't a point. So my family prayed for me to die quickly, just like the doctor ordered. I've never been certain how my survival affected my parents' faith in either the medical world or in the celestial one. My early childhood was marred by doctors' grim prognoses: I had survived but I was certainly severely brain damaged (I still wonder about this one sometimes myself!), I would never hear or speak, I'd never walk, I was tested for autism when I was 5 years old. Blah, blah, blah. . . As far as I know, with the exception of scars from mutiple antibiotic shots on the outside of my thighs, there's not a whole heck of a lot wrong with me. I'm a bit disorganised (working on that one), a bit moody (think I might be stuck with that one) and I've always had a big butt (I'm working on this one too) but other than that there's not a whole lot of anything else that sets me aside from other people. Your little boy is adorable and it's so clear how much you love him. I'm so sorry the two of you have to go through all of this (and I've worried over the past couple of days about how I should respond to your post). But it sounds like between your love for your son, his love for you, your faith in God and the assistance the medical world can offer that everything is going to be all right. Just don't forget that you're his mother, that your feelings and opinions mean more than a stranger's, that miracles do happen. . .and the oddest of things happen for the oddest but yet best of reasons. Wishing you the very best of luck for this new challenge. Love, Persephone

I think the fear is the worst. As soon as you hear the dx your brain starts freaking... will he be able to have friends? what will other parents think of him? what kind of school will he go to? will he ever go to college? will he be an independent adult? will he ever marry and have kids? As you go along, you will discover that there are many people who are productive members of society (a lot work with computers) that lead fulfilling, happy lives. As your new life rounds out with people who also have kids with this dx, and with professionals you truely trust, you'll see that life IS different than you expected, but most of the time, once you let go of what you think "should have been", you do learn to be happy and not be so afraid. You learn to be happy about what he CAN do, vs what he isn't doing yet (because it will probably come, just give it time). I am 5 years ahead of you here, but I have friends with children who sound MUCH more autistic than your son, and they are making it. They are happy, hopeful, and their bottom line is as long as their child is happy, that is what counts. ps: that is nothing to take away from where you are now... I just wanted to let you know that believe it or not, once you are able to get a handle on all that being the parent of an austic child means, life for you AND your son will really be ok.

Thread: Self Tan (155 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by sas (9 posts) at 12:57 PM:
I found some great airbrush tan stuff at walgreens, the most authentic looking that I have tried. But I really like the The Body Shop self tanner it has shea butter in it, very creamy and doesn't smell too bad. Next week I am going to try one of those Mystic Tan places where they spray you, supposed to last for a 10 days or so... we'll see. Good luck!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (420 posts) at 01:19 PM:
I did Mystic Tan, and it worked fine - in other words, it served my basic purpose. The experience of it, however, is a little freaky. You stand in the booth and have to hold your breath - it seems going into it like it would be no big deal. But for me, it was a big deal - if I breathed in or took a gulp, even while the sprayers were on pause, I'd suck in a bunch of those chemicals. The result was fine, but I got these weird dark marks around my armpits...probably how I held my arms. It took more than a month for those things to go away. As it turned out, right before my scheduled photo shoot, I missed the opportunity to get my final Mystic Tan (I thought the shop was open until 8; it closed at 5). In last-minute desperation, I bought Neutrogena's Instant Bronze #3. That's what you can see in my final photos. Professional body builders and fitness contestants use a product I'd like to try at some point. I think it's JanTana...not sure. Check out bodybuilding.com or Monica Brandt's website for more tips.

Hi, I have a 40gb iPod I bought in August 2004. It took me a while to get the iPod to work...not sure why, but don't give up on it yet. Continue to read the instructions carefully, as they were not written very well, in my opinion, and also call Apple. They were very helpful in getting it to work for me. I buy my music from iTunes, but I also recorded a lot of my CDs on to the iPod. I do not use it while I am working out with the weights as it would be distracting to me. :) I did use it a lot last year while on the elliptical when I was in Germany for 4 1/2 months but for some reason I have not used it once I got back home. Not sure why, but I finally did dig it out 2 weeks ago, charged it, and it is sitting on top of my PC, Maybe I'll start using it this week again when I am doing my cardio! Hope this helps! amkazen

I have had my only bad week of exercising last week. I need to start again TOMORROW. I'll try to squeeze it in before work tomorrow. Lori

Body for Life Forum Message by MadScience (1 posts) at 08:05 PM: Re:
SportyGirl said: TC, your post got me thinking. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm no expert on this stuff, but just curious. Is it the ATP that needs to fully regenerate, or the CP in the muscles? I always thought the converting of ADP back into ATP was going on constantly regardless of which energy system you're using, but it's the fuel for the ATP-CP system that needs to regenerate??? So, I know this is a bit old, but just thought I'd clarify. First CP isn't going to do anything for you, and I hate to say it because I know most won't believe me, but my undergrad degree was in nutrition and metabolism and I'm working on my PhD rght now. CP is used up pretty much within 30- seconds and you can't build it back like most people think. What your muscles use next is glycogen stores, which are limited, and then they use glucose to get that ATP. That first post about this is a little confusing because you aren't technically breaking a P bond and then adding one back on, that makes it sound like it's getting recycled there in the moment. There's plenty of ATP, especially if you're overweight, the thing you have to worry about is oxygen because that's the final electon acceptor needed to complete the metabolic conversion of glucose or fat to ATP. So rest and breath, or you'll end up in another metabolic pathway altogether.

Madscience's explanation above reminds me of the time I wrote a paper in Vertebrate Physiology on the electro-biochemical process that occurs during a nerve impulse. I realized when I got done that I knew a lot about one thing but had no idea whether it mattered one bit. Soon enough, I decided to become a lawyer and all that knowledge just faded away.

Thread: 2 UBWO Questions (36 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by cerdes (10 posts) at 07:58 PM: 2 UBWO Questions
Hi, am onto Week 3 here - was hoping you'd help me with a few questions about my upper body workouts. 1. Although I am doing my sets strictly in accordance with the BFL program, and hitting muscle failure, my heart rate doesn't seem to speed up during my workout. I don't get sweaty or out of breath the way I do with my LBWO. Is this a fairly normal thing for women doing upper body? I am hitting total failure on most of my exercises so I don't think I could work any harder... however, any suggestions are more than welcome! 2. I am right hand dominant, and my left arm is a lot weaker than my right. This presents problems for exercises like lateral raises - my left arm just wimps out way before my right. Is there anything I can do about this - should I be doing exercises that use one arm at a time for the most part? Can you give me any suggestions? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! Nic.

Body for Life Forum Message by kmachate (614 posts) at 08:23 PM:
Doesn't sound like you're truly hitting muscle failure to me, but that's just my opinion. So next time, when you get to that point, do 3 more reps. :) I always ise dumbells when available, that way you avoid having one arm a lot stronger than the other. Your dominant side will always be stronger, but it doesn't have to look funny..

Body for Life Forum Message by healthyme (30 posts) at 08:26 PM:
Hi Nic! I've only just started here at tracker but have lifted weights for a while so I hope I can help. 1. I find using free weights instead of machines will always get my heart rate up. LBWO is always a killer for me and I find myself out of breath alot (and sweating alot too!) 2. Always opt for dumbbells and do the same number of reps on both arms. Your left will catch up eventually. Good luck with your challenge!

Body for Life Forum Message by cerdes (10 posts) at 11:32 PM:
hi kmacate - thanks for the message. I always use dumbbells... but the problem with 3 more sets is that I literally just can't do anymore - my arms go spaghetti!

Wen,
Yes 2007 is in the works as we speak.  I'm still working out a few details (date,etc...). Of course it will be during U.S. winter, Aussie summer.  I've been doing lots of research for that one. I have enlisted 2001 Champ Brian Traylen as an advisor. (He is also from New South Wales) Brian & I met on the 2005 cruise. The guy is a PowerPlant of energy.  He has reserved 6 suites for 2006!!! I'm sure the 2007 DownUnda' cruise will be attended mostly by the Pacific Rim & South Africa. But I will be bringing a few Champs with me also. Porter & Abb already said they wouldn't miss it...

 Jerry Braam

200+ have reserved their space for the cruise.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (245 posts) at 04:47 AM:
It depends on your sleep schedule. If possible, I would still try to get your cardio in as soon as you wake up, day or night. Weight training can be done at other times, whenever you feel the most rested is when I would suggest. I thought working a regular night shift in the past was bad enough. Your schedule is brutal! You may have to do some experimenting to see what's going to fit best.

Body for Life Forum Message by Go4steffie (714 posts) at 04:53 AM:
My hubby, Russ40, does the rotating shift thing and his hardest time is when he is on 3rd. He does the best he can. Cardio is always done first thing when he gets up...whatever time that may be. Lifting is done at no specific time during the day...just whenever he can fit it in. The eating thing is tough, too, but he manages. His breaks are every 2 hours, so sometimes he eats very, very small meals every 2 instead of 3. He also makes sure he keeps feeding his body, even if it is more than 6 meals. He just keeps his metabolism going by feeding it small healthy meals. He is very good about planning ahead and packing his food for the day/night with him. He never "wings" it or eats vending machine stuff. His hardest day is his first day of 3rd because he is up more than 24 hours. He managed to get thru 2 official challenges and still, to this day, is very scheduled with his eating. Workouts are not as strict now. Hope this info helps! Stef :-)

Look, we can all say how nice people look and give compliments to everyone on here. Why can't we say and tell people what they need to improve on. Okay, maybe the way I said it or typed it was harsh and should have said it another way, but regardless, had I said it another way then someone would have still gotten mad. When I get the courage to put my pics on here, I don't want people pussy-footing around and just saying "oh you look great" when I know and everyone else knows what needs improvement.

Here's some free advice: Avoid management. If you can't understand the concept of praising publicly and reprimanding privately, (Same concept here..) then you'd be a horrible manager. In other words, if you're going to rake someone over the coals, do it in a private message. There's no reason (other than to create drama) to tell someone that they have chicken legs, or that they aren't the only one suffering 7 days out of the month. I'm sure he would like to have legs more like intenseworkout's, but then again, wouldn't we all? You're welcome to continue to bash other people, but consider the consequences of being alienated and ridiculed in return.

Well, I have looked through all 9 posts by hotforme, and I could not find any where she complimented kmachate in another thread, but what I did find was disturbing. Stabs at other people, and yes some compliments to a few, but in the same post still stabbing at others. This person says that others see this top 20 thing as a popularity contest, but isn't that the same thing as pointing a finger and saying to another, "you should be higher cause so-in-so still has to work on such-and-such." Hotforme, please keep in mind that many on this site are a work in progress, and if you don't like to see us complimenting others on their hard work, and by seeing their small progresses along the way, then don't read the posts. We all need encouragement along the way, and yes, most of us realize we still need to work on things. The last thing any of us wants, is to be stomped into the ground. I'm all for honesty, but please try to think before you just go and post a comment that insults or hurts others feelings. Jennifer

Thread: Goddess of the Underworld limps over the finish line (135 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Persephone (332 posts) at 08:06 AM: Goddess of the Underworld limps over the finish line
Well, I've completed the first 12 weeks! I didn't quite get the finish I had so envisaged but I stuck at it, warts and all. I fought the urge to try again because I knew both my successes and challenges would have important lessons for me. I wanted to see if there was a pattern to break (and I think there is). So I still have lots of the mental work to put into practice for the next round. Physically, I've gone from a way-too-tight-can't-squeeze-anymore-fat-in-there UK size 20 to a very comfortable 18. I notice the weight loss more on my upper body than the lower. But it's the internal, unseen changes that are going to count. I've been thinking an awful lot about the structure (or lack thereof) in my life. Every time I begin a thought with "I've always been the type to. . .", "I'm not the kind of person to. . .", "Can't imagine myself doing. . ." I've stopped myself and asked: "And just where has that gotten you?" This challenge, I've had to acknowledge that my position in life is a direct result of my decisions. All the accumulated stress and anguish, the debts, the poor health, my relationships with loved ones, my living conditions, my failures--and my successes--are a result of what I've done. And yet, I've also had to acknowledge that I have a clear choice: I can either wallow in this mess or I can get myself out of it. Somehow, miraculously, in the middle of the big mud puddle, I discovered self empowerment. I've been slowly working out what works and what emphatically doesn't. I've learned that in those rare moments, when you can feel your own power, is a very good moment to help someone else feel theirs. Here's a few other things I've learned: I've learned I really do operate on a very obvious monthly cycle that I need to be aware of. I have definite times of the month when I feel omnipotent and time when I feel my ass has been given a proverbial intergalactic kicking. Auntie Flow needs to be respected, not hated, not ignored but she needs me to work with her to be in time with the tempo of life iteself. I've learned a lack of organisation is a time and money waster. It doesn't take long to take a few moments each day to get organised--but a hell of a long time to unravel the knots of sloppiness, neglect and chaos. I love knowing things are left exactly where I've put them. I love waking up to a tidy a living space. I've learned success is not an easy road. When I look back on my successes, I can see there wasn't a whole lot of "luck" involved. I've learned I love to workout! I re-discovered the joy of running. I get better every day--and gosh, did I miss it when I thought injury had put an end to my running days. Oh how I love to work out from home. I might be cramped but I really don't know how you guys who work out from a gym find the motivation to get to there! When I open my eyes every morning, my weights are there with a metaphorical grin and a gleam in their eye. My weights say: "You looking at me, big butt? You think you can bench 50K this morning? Or ya gonna have six cups of tea with whole milk and white sugar first?" (Persephone rises from the cradle of warm covers. She stands and glares at the weights, nostrils flaring. She dresses, then flexes. Even before she loads the weights, she can hear the plates whimper.) Ha! I've learned I am totally capable of taming a "manic Monday" of BFL, travel, MA classes, and family responsibilities. I've learned I love to look pretty for my honey. There's nothing better than hearing someone you love and respect saying how wonderful you look. I love being able to wear the beautiful clothes I've bought but haven't been able to wear because I had put on weight. I've learned I'm not "destined" to be fat, unhappy or poor. Bring on the next challenge!! Woohoo!! Love, Persephone

I have been having a little pain in my left knee this week.

Since I am training for this 1/2 marathon I dont want to stop running and do a different cardio routine.

How have you guys dealt with injuries while training?

Rod

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1064 posts) at 05:48 PM:
Find something that doesn't bother your knee, give it a rest. There ar e avariety of things you can do. I can't have impact on my ankle so I choose other cardio exercises to do. Lori

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (105 posts) at 06:47 PM:
I'm at week 6 of dealing with a knee sprain. I figure at least 2 more weeks of light rehabing before I can even think about moving back into heavy weights. Knee pain when running is something to pay attention to. It generally does not get better on it's own. Switch to a bike for the next few sessions, then see if the pain comes back. If it does, you have a more serious issue. Get it treated. You will totally blow your chance at doing the half marathon if you don't take care of the knee. Things to look at include bad shoes, gait issues, and just general "I'm getting older and my knees aren't 15 anymore." Again- STOP RUNNING RIGHT NOW. Take at least 2 sessions off, do alternate cardio. Do not mess around with knee pain. It means there's something you need to pay attention to.

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (105 posts) at 06:51 PM:
And to answer your other question- I've been working around the injury in question. I stopped all running, and learned how to do some unilateral exercises for the lower body. When I realized that any quad exercises were aggrivating the knee, I stopped quad work and moved to reverse hyperextensions for my hamstrings, and one legged calf raises on my non injured leg. It's slowed my lower body progress, but the alternative is stopping totally.

Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (53 posts) at 04:54 PM: New attitude... new approach... new body...
Hi everyone.  I've been hanging out on this site for a couple of months now, first just watching, then posting occasionally.

I've been amazed at how great you guys are!  There is so much encouragement and support here.  And there's so much inspiration!  You've completely changed my attitude to this program.  I started BFL as a fast-track to get in shape in 12 weeks, thinking it was just about the workouts and meals, but this is soooo much more!  It's about attitude first - focus, determination, passion, and commitment - which you guys have in truck loads!

I now have a new attitude.  This isn't a quick fix.  This is for life right?!  I now have a plan for one year, with four challenges as "checkpoints", and that'll just be the beginning.

I came across a statistic tonight - apparently EVERY YEAR 89% OF OUR BODY IS REGENERATED.  Wow!  So a year from now I'll be close to having a completely "new" body.  So I guess the thing I have to decide is whether this new body will be weak and flabby or strong and healthy....

STRONG and HEALTHY.... here I come.

Thanks everyone for your inspiration and motivation.

Donna

It really makes them smile to realize that their skin, hair, blood, muscles, and other tissues are NOT as old as they are!! Your profile says you're 35... but your body (cells, tissues, and all) are at most a few months old. Truly "age" is simply a number. It's a very refreshing reality to know that each day your body is doing something to make it new and better... inside and out. Your BFL efforts will only serve to GREATLY ENHANCE this amazing process!! Best of success to you. Jay~~

You're right, the mental game is a huge part of this program and as you get through the weeks, you realize more and more how important that element is. It's not an overexaggeration that I feel like I'm becoming a `better' person as I work on achieving greater fitness.

I'm feeling really awful about myself. My freeday was Thursday because I had a christmas party. Yesterday, we visited relatives and I had spaghetti and meatballs....not the best meal to have. I really blew it last night after dinner... I had a HUGE bowl of icecream and a hershy bar. Today I ate even worse and I didn't do my planned cardio. I'm really dreading weighing in and measuring tommorow. Why did I do this to myself? I'm really upset with myself and fear I can't stick with this if I'm already caving in after 2 weeks. i feel like I shouldn't even allow myself a free day for this week. Can you still get great results if you fall back every once and a while?

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (105 posts) at 09:48 PM:
Now I agree with everything said previously. Indulge me here while I engage in a little virtual tushie booting. :) Remember it's done with love. If you weigh in and measure tomorrow then you will lose. By doing that, knowing the rough weekend you had, you are setting yourself up for failure. If you want to quit, do so. Wake up tomorrow, weigh, measure, post to the Tracker that you are a failure. Go into a deep spiral of depression eating to prove to yourself what a loser you are. Or, prove that you are a champion in the making. Today's not over. Log off the Tracker. Get your running shoes on, go into the bathroom, set up your watch and do your cardio by running in place. Even just 10 minutes is going to make a HUGE impact on your state of mind. Set yourself up for a successful day tomorrow. Pack your meals for the day, set your alarm, and get out of bed on time. :) Nail your workout. YOU control the step in front of you. Nobody else. Failure is easy. Success takes work. Now ask yourself if you like how you feel right now? If the answer is no- you know what to do. :) We believe in you. Now get off the Tracker, and get that cardio in! :)

Hi gang! I just completed my most challenging challenge of my 4 Body-for-Life challenges... Physically, I didn't make any progress but in some ways, I think C4 prepared me to make great progress in C5. Although this challenge was hindered a great deal by illness, I still feel it was worthwhile. I think it's so important to stay committed to this lifestyle even when you're not seeing results. I'm confident that even with chronic illness I'll be able to stay the course with my BFL program enough to make solid progress most of the time. I believe I'm better prepared now to deal with the inevitable interruptions that will come from chronic illness. I'm very excited about C5 which I will start on January 2. I just bought a new BFL Success Journal and some winter cycling clothing so I can still ride my bike outdoors. Despite missing so many workouts due to illness during C4,I managed to get in a short upper body workout on Thursday and a brisk 8-mile bike ride on Friday. Unfortunately, I was sick yesterday although I'm getting better today. In the meantime, I'll continue to do my workouts and eating as if I had already started a new challenge. My perspective for C-5 will be to do my best and just accept that if illness again interrupts my challenge it is still better than not even trying. But come hell or high water, I WILL get below 200 pounds - way below 200 pounds during this next challenge! I will also go to the UCLA Pituitary Disorders Clinic and hopefully get better treatment than I have to date. And it hit me today, that if I can hang in there with all the difficulties I've had recently, imagine what I can do once I get my illness under control! Man! Talk about a wild and crazy guy! I'm confident that will happen, I just don't know how soon... And frankly, I've had far less interruptions due to illness this year than I had in any of the previous 9 years! It helps me a lot to remind myself of that so that I don't forget how much better things are now than they used to be... Thanks again for all your support. I'm looking forward to a great challenge and sharing great results with my BFL buddies! I'll be going to Texas next Friday to visit my family for a couple of weeks, but it will be great to get the holidays behind me and be totally focused on my BFL program... I'm sure you guys feel much the same way and my guess is that the Tracker will be smokin' in January!!! Jim

Ha ha ha great to hear that you're attitude hasn't changed on bit Jim!! Glad you're still around to kick our butts a little bit when we start worrying about smaller things getting in the way of our abilities to stick to a healtier life plan. I'm back onto Week 9 after a 2 weeks layover due to illness and some personal issues and ready to tackle it with major gusto. Have fun in Texas!! Jeremy

I have had a really tough second challenge. Most of it mental I believe. I also didn't post as much this challenge as in my first..so I'm publicly stating I'm going to make this work! I had an incredible first challenge and even w/ my bad days/weekends/weeks...I have kept w/in the same range or lower than my first challenge, yet I have a lot of work to go! I need to tell anyone who will listen that I can do this and I WILL!! I actually hit my 50 lb mark this week, but had a bad weekend so I'm not going to measure until next weekend! I am going tomake this last week of this challenge all I can! Thx for listening and keeping me accountable. Jacque
