Thread: Daily multi vitamin (169 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (95 posts) at 02:33 PM:
I think that just about any multivitamin will work good. Some have extra goodies like leutin but if you are eating healthy and taking a multivitamin and multi mineral you will be in good shape. I have been considering a juicer are they worth it?

Thread: Charting - just not feeling like it! (169 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ReenieC (105 posts) at 08:31 PM:
If I don't chart, I don't lift as well. Charting keeps me focused and helps me see where I started and where I am. I love to flip back and do comparisons on what I can presently lift versus what I started with or how much I improve. If I see progress on paper, then it just keeps me motivated.

Thread: I was just wondering....... (298 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 01:54 PM: I was just wondering.......

How many of you on the tracker play a sport of some sort or if after starting BFL have decided to take up a sport? I noticed a couple of you rock climb?  I play a little golf and I ride but thats about it.

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 01:59 PM:
I consider weight lifting my sport now.....LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:01 PM:
hey girl, thats a great sport! but the real question is....what about that cardio???

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (574 posts) at 02:01 PM:
Since getting back onto BFL I started riding my mountain bike during the summer. Then on Saturday I started skiing again...fun fun fun!! I have a sort of list of things I want to try now that I am in good enough shape to do them without passing out. Still to be tried are rock climbing and running in a 5 or 10k.

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:02 PM:
I won't mention the cardio.....LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:04 PM:
I really want to try rock climbing. We have a place here down by the river that has a set up, but I have been too chicken in the past to sign up. BFL has been rather empowering, think I may do it this spring!

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:05 PM:
By the way, I tried to ice skate last year, does the word "wall hugger" bring anything to mind?

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (172 posts) at 02:06 PM:
I think rock climbing would be a blast nothing around here that I know of though

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:07 PM:
Speaking of rock climbing, my son wants me to climb the wall at Dick's Sporting Goods, it's about 3 stories high. I told him at Christmas time but I really don't feel ready yet....I don't want pieces of fat sticking out through the ropes for all to see....LOL..Maybe by March. :) How high is the one at the river?

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:08 PM:
Oh and polo, that is something I have wanted to do for a long time....darn it that I didn't get that polo mallet for christmas and got that long box full of socks!

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:08 PM:
About the ice skating, everyone starts out as a wall hugger. It will get better. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Persephone (346 posts) at 02:09 PM:
Well, I think every summer I play the losing battle of trying to teach the Brits how to play baseball. . . But then, the Brits say I'll never learn how to play cricket. Please. . .don't get me started on football As I live near Wimbledon, we all try to play tennis (oh, now there's a laugh!) Or we stand in a queue outside of Harrod's for the "bargains" Now I am cracking myself up Does that count as a workout?? LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:10 PM:
Oh My! iceskater.....I fell out of my chair over here laughing! no one will notice anything sticking out anywhere if you are able to climb 3 stories high!!! they will just be in awe of your awesome ability! I think you should do it. The one at the river is not that high!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:11 PM:
football....do you mean American football or what we Americans call "soccer"? Bargain hunting only counts as a workout if it is around Christmas time.....LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:11 PM:
Bargain hunting outside Harrods is definately a workout!!! LOL Much harder than baseball or cricket!

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (319 posts) at 02:14 PM:
Give me something simple like bowling.

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:15 PM:
I can't play tennis so I am envious of those that can, I look like I am having a seizure when I attemp it, I need to stick to slow sports that don't require too much jumping around!

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:16 PM:
I can't even do that right, you're talking to the queen of gutterballs here! Last time I went bowling, I accidentally took a step on the lane, I slipped, my feet came up from underneath me and I landed on my butt. That was a lot of fun. I'm sure a lot of people got their laughs for the day.

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:16 PM:
Bowling I "may" be able to handle....no guarantees...LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:17 PM:
Jansen you have me laughing over here! I can just see the "seizure" move. LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:17 PM:
I'm in the gutter with you iceskater!

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (319 posts) at 02:17 PM:
I learned how to iceskate way back in '88 as a matter of fact he was on the 1980 olympic U.S. Hockey Miracle Team. I forgot his name. Bummer.

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:18 PM:
That's why they invented those nice little bumpers! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:20 PM:
I went skiing with my husband once, and by the way, looked real sporty, all decked out, new everything, he even bought me these really looooong fast skis. Doesn't matter I had only skied once before! So down I go, faster, faster, out of control because hey, I don't know what I am doing but I am doing it really fast and dressed really well. Thank goodness for all those people in that line for the lift that stopped me!

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:21 PM:
needless to say...I DON'T ski!!! LOL

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:22 PM:
It's a good thing you didn't get yourself killed! LOL Been skiing lately?

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (319 posts) at 02:22 PM:
I learned how to ski, I never learned how to stop so I would use the rental barn to stop *crash*.

Body for Life Forum Message by LeoGirl (168 posts) at 02:22 PM:
Hmmmm how good is skating for cardio? I love to skate.

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (574 posts) at 02:28 PM:
LOL jansen. Kinda like why I don't bowl anymore...it got kinda embarrassing when they kept announcing over the loud speaker "will the woman in lane 4 please stop LOFTING the balls"

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:28 PM:
I think skating has to be real good cardio, ask iceskater, I know that it has to burn some calories!

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:29 PM:
Moggie! LOL nothing like being the center of attention!

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:30 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (95 posts) at 02:30 PM:
I like skiing, snowboarding and surfing. All are pretty good workouts. I miss playing Football (american that is)

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:35 PM:
Now snowboarding, that should really be a workout, does it take more balance than skiing, not that I will try it after my last downhill adventure....

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:35 PM:
I LOVE ice skating and skiing, I would like to try surfing and snowboarding. They sound extremely fun.

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:38 PM:
my 13 year old plays golf, walking 18 holes and "carrying" her bag. She really puts me to shame when I would prefer to ride in the cart along side her!

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (95 posts) at 02:40 PM:
snowboarding is alot of fun and i think its a little easier to pick up than skiing. knowing how to surf and skate (board that is) helps to

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (283 posts) at 02:41 PM:
I used to date a rock climber and I LOVED rock climbing..... but I no longer do it because its expensive and I have no one to do it with. I run and do tae kwon do. I am a pathetic skiier but I like that as well. :) Kelli

Body for Life Forum Message by Shoe (18 posts) at 02:44 PM:
I'd love to try rock-climbing, but I'm not sure the world is ready to see me spilling out of a harness! Give me another month or two, though, and I might change my mind. As for now, my sports are running, bad tennis, biking, and chasing a very small dog around the house.

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:44 PM:
Okay, so its settled, Rock climbing is this springs new adventure for me....I have to pick a spring sport for my new BFL body!

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:45 PM:
I would prefer to stay in the cart, jansen, those are a lot of fun. :) I don't know if I could ever really pick up snowboarding because I am not very good on a skateboard. Surfing would not really matter because I would just fall in the water, no real harm as long as I'm not in deep water.

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (283 posts) at 02:47 PM:
Jansen.... around where I live there is a rock climbing specialty store that hosts trips to good climbing places and they offer instruction as well. You should look into it. I miss climbing...:(

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (95 posts) at 02:47 PM:
I would like to try some form of martial arts, I took tang so do for 8 years when I was younger.

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:49 PM:
They say that the martial arts are really good for your balance and inner strength.....I haven't tried it, but my pediatrician is really into all that and swears by it for his exercise and sport of choice.

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:51 PM:
do we have any rowers out there? Is that what they are called? I went to school with a girl that was on Georgetowns womens crew team, she had a knock out body, really tone and strong.

Body for Life Forum Message by Trixie (29 posts) at 02:53 PM:
I play alot of tennis and can tell you that my speed on the court has really improved since BFL.

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 02:56 PM:
I imagine that BFL would really improve your sport. I have been taking a LONG break from skating. I am curious to see how much better my performance will be with BFL part of my lifestyle.

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:56 PM:
Thats cool, I really do feel more empowered having been working out and eating better. I have found that where I used to get away with less riding while in the saddle, now I feel like my reflexes are better and I can go with the motion rather than against it. I don't feel half a step behind anymore! I feel stronger in the saddle, and thats a good thing!

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 02:59 PM:
Get those skates laced back on and go for it! I will be waiting to hear how you like it!!

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 03:07 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 03:12 PM:
who has tried beach volleyball??? They have that here at our Y and it is pretty popular.

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (96 posts) at 03:14 PM:
Well after I started BFL in 2003 I got back into Volleyball!! Now that is my FAVORITE sport!! Too many people and it may not be as good of a workout but fun none the less. I prefer 4 on 4(well maybe 1 on 1, lol)!! I also play softball when time allows. Shelly =)

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 03:15 PM:
Its 28 degrees here right now, beach volley ball is NOT popular today I don't imagine!

Body for Life Forum Message by Phoenix (51 posts) at 03:18 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by jansen (105 posts) at 03:18 PM:
Supa K, my 13 year old came home the other day to tell me about the middle school dodge ball game between the teachers and students. This game is so serious, the kids have to get a permission slip signed by their parents to participate, and the teachers take it really seriously with uniforms and all! It was a hoot! They mean business, But they weren't throwing wrenches!

Body for Life Forum Message by emKse (58 posts) at 04:09 PM:
I quit collegiate soccer just this year and got on the BFL program to not just improve my fitness, but make sure it doesn't go downhill!

Body for Life Forum Message by LittleBig (9 posts) at 04:55 PM:
I have run my first 5K and then a 3 K a month later. I LOVED it!! I am still too big to be anything of a threat as far as the winning goes, but I ran the entire races and felt really great that I never quit!! My dd that is 7 also ran a 1 K and ran the entire race. I was so proud of her!

Body for Life Forum Message by LeoGirl (168 posts) at 05:50 PM:
My BF is a 3rd degree black belt in TKD and he loves it! Its great for adults really good for kids too.

Body for Life Forum Message by ReenieC (105 posts) at 08:25 PM:
omg...I love rock climbing!!! It is an absolute rush. If anyone hasn't tried but wants to, you have got to take a class and go...or find an outdoor adventure trip but just make sure you go with someone who is experienced. It's not only a physical challenge, but a mental challenge as well, which just makes it even more awesome.

I know that this topic has been covered before on here but I am seriously thinking about supplementing this into my diet. I am currently taking a multivitamin, multimineral, b-complex, omegas, and three myoplex plus three meals daily. I have been seeing awesome results thus far but I am definetly interested in CLA. Just some feedback on this. Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (80 posts) at 02:55 PM:
I spoke to a nutritionist about CLA and they said that it is known to help at 2 capsules twice a day but more so its known to help prevent cancer especially breast?

Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (80 posts) at 02:56 PM:
Oh ya, I started taking it when I started the challenge so I don't know if it really works or not?? If some studies show it may help with cancer, it cant hurt to take it.

I am taking it this challenge so I guess I won't know anything for a few weeks...just started it last week. Two capsules twice a day?

I am considering taking thermodynamix in order to increase my weight loss results. I would like to lose about 20-30 pounds of fat. My question is for anyone who has taken this product and then stopped. I've heard that after you stop taking weight loss products your metabolism slows down drastically and the weight comes back. Has anyone experienced this or is it a myth? Thanks, Val:)

Reading your post was like hearing him all over again, right after he found out. All I can say is that time has passed and they have adjusted beautifully. Rachel is a lovely girl and is well loved and doted on by our whole family. She can't really connect with it or express much about it, but we know she knows she belongs and is cared for deeply. I'm sure your son feels the same way. You will both get through this, both will adjust and your lives will both be very good, you'll see. You and your son are in my prayers.

Add to list of South Africa.. We have stunning beaches, Ballito, margate and Cape Town.(Where the two oceans meet) Cape -Tonians love a good party. Then theres SunCity( our small version of Las Vegas.) Wildlife is amazing, no we dont have elephants and lions roaming the city, we drive out to game reserves to watch them.Drakensberg Mountains, a cool and peaceful retreat. Like our sunny skies, S.A people are warm and sincere. Nandos and biltong, thats my all time favourite.

Body for Life Forum Message by Phoenix (51 posts) at 02:31 AM:
Oooo Nando's. And they fit into the bfl meals. Well depending on what you get, they are defnitely healthier then most take aways!

Body for Life Forum Message by Shoe (18 posts) at 02:39 PM:
I completely dig the term "take aways." We call it "carry out" (at least in Oklahoma), but "take aways" is much more musical. What's a nando? Megan

I lost track of this thread, but I now see something on it that I'd like to respond to. The notion that "Americans sue for everything" and that there are lots of dumb lawsuits out there. Here's my opinion, biased because I am a lawyer, but at least I have some first hand idea of what is going on instead of just the propaganda.
1. Americans do have access to courts, but most lawsuits that are filed are either collection cases filed by companies or divorce actions filed by couples, or criminal cases filed by district attorneys.
2. It is much harder than you think to win a lawsuit. Anyone can bring one, but to win it is the key. For a plaintiff to win a medical malpractice suit, they have to go up against a doctor with a big community name or a local hospital that everyone is worried about hurting, and they are generally represented by insurance companies who spend all kinds of money to defend the case. It's very hard to get doctors to testify against each other so plaintiff usually has to pay a lot of money to find one in another community to help.
3. Most states have damage caps, meaning that the dollar amounts in medical cases are restricted to certain amounts, usually in the area of $250,000 no matter how serious the injury.
In most other cases, the injury was either caused by an auto accident or faulty premises or a defective product. Again, usually an insurance company defends the suit, though nobody is allowed to know that. There is the McDonald's suit, yes, and no doubt the verdict was excessive, but the coffee was not HOT, it was nearly boiling, in fact so hot that McDonald's was aware that coffee that hot would cause serious burns if dropped on an adult or a child. The lady had severe burns on her legs from this coffee and the evidence was that it would not have caused burns that severe had the coffee been at a standard temperature. The case is really no different than if you turned on a hot water faucet at a hotel and it spewed out boiling water which burned you without warning--which has happened to many. Just some thoughts. Sure, the system isn't perfect, but keep in mind that someday you might need to use it, if you or a loved one is severely injured and some insurance company tells you to go to hell. That will be a different story, won't it?

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (107 posts) at 06:39 AM: Job Interview
In the middle of the joy that is working Holiday Retail, I have a job interview today. My only day off for the next 10. I'm scared to death. It's a position that sounds really like a strong fit for things I do well. Working with kids, motivating people. But, I've had totally no prep time. None. Nada, Zip. It's a case of I'm basically going as is. I ironed my pants, haven't had time to get a haircut, haven't had time to get more of the fancy schmancy resume paper, and had to do the prelim interview by phone yesterday while driving! Talk about unscripted. I need a new job in the worst way. I have a stack of rejection letters a half a mile high. At times I just wonder, "what's wrong with me?" Now I'm on the way to an interview where part of the hiring decision is going to be based on my really bad undergrad transcript. Joy. Anyone up this morning, send some happy vibes to the Gods of Getting New Jobs! Please. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (249 posts) at 07:14 AM:
Blemt, dig down deep and pull out every ounce of confidence you can, then go in there and kick some butt. My dad always told me to "walk in there like you own the place." Not cocky, just confident and strong.

Holiday Retail...YUCK!!! I feel for you. Sometimes the best interviews are the ones that don't seem to go perfectly. Don't worry about your hair, they don't know what you look like when it is cut, don't worry about your resume paper, I have hired hundreds of people and never once did I even care about the paper. Remember: No wet fish handshakes, maintain good eye contact, send a thank you letter in the mail today, don't ask about salary, relax.....SENDING POSITIVE VIBES right now!!!!

Not sure if this belongs in the O/T category but it does seem this category gets the most traffic. There are some rules & policies that are part of tracker. Here is one in particular that a tracker member brought to my attention we should ALL follow. " Private Messages received on these Forums are to be considered private and are not to be posted publicly unless the sender of the private message agrees. " I for one have sent PM's in confidence, while they weren't evil or discriminating or whatever, they were confidential thats why they went on a PM and not posted in public; I'm sure we all feel the same way. I'd have been mortified to find it pasted on a public thread without my consent. Just some common sense etiquette.

But last night, I guess he was finally tired and slept from 0830-0230 and I went to bed around 10 PM,,,, had to clean up his mess (poptart crumbs from breakfast) LOL.... I know it seems difficult right now. But you are one of the best mommies I know. You are strong! You are determined! You have a heart of gold! Please remember that when you have rough days! And you are his ROCK! As a parent myself I can't even begin to imagine your roller coaster of emotions and avalanche of questions that are probably rotating through your brain right now with no off switch. But please remember this it is not your fault. It is no ones fault. But it is ok to get mad and upset. I believe it is the coping process just don't blame yourself please. You are the best mommie in the world! Ok I am sorry for commenting on this thread but the other one was so full of comments I wanted to share with you my thoughts on this one. And how sweet to get 4 hours of sleep and then to have your little sweetheart crawl up in bed with you! I agree great small favors are the best ones! Please take care of yourself! Thread: Kids and low cal beverages (78 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (283 posts) at 12:35 PM: Kids and low cal beverages
To anyone with kids..... my toddler always wants whatever I am eating or drinking.... which is good as far as eating goes.... BUT she also always wants to try my diet pop, crystal lite, and protein shakes.... I try to give her milk or water instead, but then she pushes it away and points to what I have. Is this stuff bad for kids- I am particularly concerned about the nutra sweet.....?

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (172 posts) at 12:36 PM:
my son's are practically grown but I let them have diet coke, diet sprite, etc. when they were small didn't seem to do any harm but, I made certain they also got plenty of milk, juice, etc. as well

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (383 posts) at 12:40 PM:
good question! I always share my protein shakes with my girls (who are 6) on the way to school..I figure its just protein, fruit and ice.....my girls love them too! Other than that I let them have water/oj/milk and thats it...they are just like me and sleep with a water bottle by their bed because they get thirsty at night...any-whoooo I don't let them have soda (diet or otherwise) ever...my son who is 18 has never even tried Coke or Dr. Pepper or any of that caffinated stuff...(incredible but true)....but as far as protein shakes go I can't imagine its bad unless you put other supplements in it...it will be interesting to see others comments

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (283 posts) at 12:46 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (383 posts) at 12:49 PM:
Funny, my son too...with the beer that is! Gotta love that! I used to drink a 6 pack of Dr.P a day, then couldn't stand it anymore and switched to Coke or Pepsi, and then when I was pregnant with my twins I couldn't stand the stuff, not to mention you shouldn't drink it...and then after they were born I still couldn't stand it! Thank God...so I have been Caffeine free for over 6 years now! Wait...I lied I drink coffee (starbucks) on my free day!!! Talk about a shock to my system!

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (574 posts) at 12:53 PM:
I have been trying to get my kids to eat as natural as possible. Which has meant that I felt it necessary to lead by example UGH lol. So they drink water, juice, some herb teas, etc. My kids don't care for my protein shakes...so I make them smoothies instead. I'm not sure on the protein powder. I am probably just a nervous nellie but I would worry about too much protein and their kidneys??? Isn't too much protein bad for kidneys? I think I remember reading that somewhere.

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (306 posts) at 01:03 PM:
I keep Ovaltine around and my kids love it. It's a decent alternative to chocolate milk. I never let them have some of my shake because I need all the food I can get, so I'm stingy. I let my son have his own shakes but he's 11 and over 100lbs so I doubt they will do him any harm. I wouldn't let younger kids have that much since there are vitamins and minerals that my be too much for them, especially if they are taking vitamins as well.

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (283 posts) at 01:07 PM:
Yeah- that is really my concern.... if there's anything in there that could be harmful, if I just let her take a sip. I dont know much about supplements so I get nervous about her having too much of whatever... ovaltine is a great idea, thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (306 posts) at 01:09 PM:
I let my kids have splenda, nutra-sweet and caffiene. They are fine, honestly, I'd rather they have a diet soda than too much juice which is high in sugar or too much milk which is high in calories and fat. You will find people who wouldn't dream of letting their kids have any of this stuff, but I don't see a problem with it. My kids are fine, healthy and normal.

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (283 posts) at 01:19 PM:
Thanks tink.... we have switched to 2% milk, and I dont give her juice for the same reason so the poor girl probably gets bored with milk and water....

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (383 posts) at 01:24 PM:
I just worry about the affects of the sugar in caffinated drinks on teeth, that is my main concern...Dentist always tell me to stay away from the stuff (me and my children)...they only get a little sippy cup of juice a day and then drink water all day, and milk (1%) with dinner. I only let my girls have a drink or two of my shake in the morning so their protein intake is minimal....

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (574 posts) at 05:03 PM:
yw skater. Another tip...if your legs or other body parts are dry at all before the lotion I would suggest exfoliating and moisturizing before you use it. JNG worked great during the summer when my legs weren't dry, but I noticed when I used it after coming back from Mexico..when my legs were dry...that it kinda flaked off with any dry skin I had.

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (157 posts) at 05:33 PM:
I use it everday and never have a weird orange glow or anything. When I went home to OK I was asked if I spend a lot more time in the sun since we moved to SC and I was proud to tell them I was using Jergens for medium tones. I love this stuff. I like to tan, but where I live the closest is like 10miles away so this just keeps me a little less pale:)! I dont think there is a difference in my pics from the summer til now. Take a look, I have been using it since august. Crystal

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (157 posts) at 05:43 PM:
nope, nothing else besides the Jergens itself. It never has left any weird places on my knees or elbows. Also just to let ya know, it does continue to develop over the next couple of days, I dont think you will see an automatic change tonight. It takes a day or two to notice the difference. Like I said though I am a little more olive skin toned so I use the medium, could be a different experience for you. Let me know how it works out, my sister is fair skinned and wont use it because she thinks shell turn orange:)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer A (290 posts) at 08:44 PM:
I tried it recently but like with any self-tanner I get tired of the committment of having to continue using it. You have to keep it up. I have a question - when do you apply it? In the morning after a shower, wait a bit then dress? or at night right before bed? I'm wondering if anyone has found that it smears, rubs, streaks or stains clothes or bedding. I am pleased this product doesn't have a strong self-tan 'odor' like the Loreal Sublime. I like that stuff too but the smell is so tiring - I'll save it for summer. I actually don't like the tacky feel of that stuff either but the colour results are good.

Body for Life Forum Message by LeoGirl (168 posts) at 10:11 PM:
Linda-I've always admired your tan (and your progress!)in your pictures! I might have to give Sublime a try this summer! Jen-With other ones I usually put it on right after exfoliating in shower and then go to bed. Today I had a shower this morning, let it dry for a few minutes and put some black clothes on just in case. I'm going to put some more on tonight so I'll let you know if it smears my sheets. Thats what I do anyway.

I was reading through Persephone's post about being an angel and I got to thinking about this holiday season. I've witnessed some crazy behavior this past week at various stores while out and about doing some shopping. I really do feel for the people who make a living working in retail, the holidays suck!! I did it for 6 years and it was awful. Customers are so rude, not only to employees but to other people. So, something happend tonight at the dry cleaners which normally would have made me livid, but I decided that I wasn't going to be like the "other" lunatics running around and took a deep breath, thought about Persephone's angel thread, and blew it off. So, maybe being an angel can be taking it easy on others, enjoy this season and sharing your happiness and new found love for life thanks to BFL!!

I just tasted this. OMG - they call this breakfast food!!!????? It rose high because of the amount and I swear this "breakfast food" with butter and maple syrup "lite" was exactly like having cake with icing on it. This is not breakfast food, it is dessert, cake & icing. No wonder people get into trouble with eating!!!! Dough girl is well on her way if I don't stop this!

I thought it had an aftertaste - maybe it's something you get used to. And it was pretty expensive. But it has a low glycemic index, so maybe it's worth acquiring a taste for it.

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (198 posts) at 02:31 PM:
You can get the extract (small bottle with an eyedropper) at a health food store, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Trader Joe's etc. I like things pretty sweet, and 5 drops in my coffee or tea, or oatmeal is just about right. If you experience a bitter or an aftertaste, then you've used too much and should back off a few drops. http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/healthinfo/stevia.html for info. to order: http://www.thebook.com/livewell/stevia.htm the liquid extract is what I use.

Normally people don't report that it does, though everyone tastes things slightly differently. If you think it does, try using less of it next time. Paul likes ONLY three drops in his coffee or it tastes funny to him, and I need about 5 or 6 to get the amount of sweetness I like.

I've used it and buy it in packets of 100 from GNC. Initially it did taste slightly different from Splenda but got used to it very soon. As long as you don't overdose it doesn't have any aftertaste. I think it's a much healthier alternative to all of the artificial sweeteners out there. ALthough the American Food Society or whatever they're called will not allow it to sold as a sweetener, only as a 'supplement'. It also has not been tested on effects during pregnancy.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (698 posts) at 07:26 PM:
I use Stevia everyday in my oatmeal. I think it has a slight aftertaste but nothing like sacharrin. Its an all natural herb so its nothing like splenda. I try to stay away from artificial sweeteners like splenda and aspartame because of all the chemicals and rumored health effects. Ive never tired the liquid form but I might have to give it a shot next time I buy some.

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 07:29 PM:
I saw some at GNC and the price seemed awfully high but this health food store by my house had some and the price seemed very reasonable. I guess I will have to try it.

Body for Life Forum Message by FitForGood (35 posts) at 07:51 PM:
willowgerl - thanks for the info about getting rid of the aftertaste. I was using a whole packet in my coffee, so I'll try just 1/2 of one to see if it's better.

Do you use the lifting straps currently? They look like they really might help. Anyway for 10 bucks or so they sure can't hurt. There is a Play It Again near me so I'll look there for bars. I am starting to outgrow the barbells. Thanks...I appreciate the helpful info!

Again, there might be something in there that will work for you. http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html Best of success to you :)

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (198 posts) at 01:38 PM:
I don't use them currently but they're something I was meaning to get once upon a time - mostly for support when I was trying to get my pullups nailed. I wanted to use them mostly because I had a lack of strength in my wrists as compared to my back and arms, so I thought they would help. I never got them because I was able to do pullups before I got my act together to order them! They have been recommended to me by several different people, though, and are excellent for wrist support. Let us know how you like them if you decide to get them. And play it again will always have 'new' used stuff cycling though it, so check back if you don't find what you want at first. have fun!

Do you go backwards too during HIIT? I heard from someone at the gym that you go forward for 10 min. and then backward for 5 min. Or do you just hit it for the full 20min. forward full throttle with your intervals?? Does anyone know??? Thanks in advance.

Body for Life Forum Message by cerdes (11 posts) at 02:16 AM:
Hi LittleBig - personally, I just go the normal forward way for all my intervals. However it might be a good idea to go backwards at a higher speed for your 9s or 10s - no easy feat! However, I like to keep my momentum going so my heart rate doesn't fall... Up to you really - whatever you think gets you to that '10' is fine!

Body for Life Forum Message by biffler (216 posts) at 12:26 PM:
I almost always go forwards during HIIT and work in some back pedaling in the cool down. I find I can't go as fast when backwards and I want to burn as much as possible during those 20min!. I also never hold onto the handles - makes sure I am getting as much weight resistance as possible.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jennifer (33 posts) at 01:27 PM:
I also just started running for my HIIT session and am planning to do my first 5K in January. I also have a knee problem. My friends who are marathoners told me to take Advil 30 mins before starting my run and to immediately ice the knee for 10 mins after running. I also bought a neoprene knee brace which has helped a LOT and now I do not have any pain. Hope this helps.

Body for Life Forum Message by mgbuffgirl (64 posts) at 02:19 PM:
It would probably be best to quit running & start doing the elliptical trainer, but since you're training for a marathon...make sure you're doing regular leg weights. If you strengthen the muscles around the knee it helps (at least for me). Good luck & don't keep running if it gets worse. It's not worth messing up your knee permanently...

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (777 posts) at 05:36 PM:
My knees kill me all the time. Esp. when I start sprint training and all the running. I notice if I take care of my knees while lifting. Like dead on form with some exercises or supporting my knees with my hands while doing a leg press things like that.... when I run they don't bother me as much. Also, make sure you have the best supportive shoe is important as well. You can get gel inserts (from a running shop NOT Dr. Scholl's LOL) that help with knee pain as well. Also try to find alternate paths than running on asphalt when you can. Just be very cautious of them. It happens, knee pain when you are extremely active and when you run. It's part of the game. Yea you can rest but if you baby it a lot you can make the problem a lot worse. You need to be careful with it yes. I also spent a lot of time on a bike in the gym when my knees got really bad to keep training. Sometimes stopping to train is necessary in extreme injuries. But sometimes stopping to train is not an option. You just have to find ways around it. Swimming is another "really" great option too. those were things I did when the pain became so intense I could not walk. Try some low impact cardiovascular stuff to keep training. I would stay away from the elliptical trainer that believe it or not can cause hyper-extension on your knees esp. if they are weakened from already having strain. Trust me on this one from personal experience. All in all if the pain is bad enough first and foremost find a good orthopedist that deals with sports & athletes. They will be very understanding to your specified medical needs. Hope your knees feel better soon! T

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (198 posts) at 12:25 PM:
Oxygen has promise of getting good again. It's gotten seriously fluffy and weird in the past 6 months or so, what with talking about "not eating after 6 pm" and celebrity gossip and raving Jennifer Anniston's 'buff' arms, etc. (I love JA, but buff arms she has not). In fact, I wrote the mag in a rage after that article in the December issue about the butt exercises. Every single one of the pictures that illustrated the exercises were horrendously off, and the photos about how to do deadlifts had dangerously bad form. Like an-injury-waiting-to-happen dangerous. From an industry standard-bearer, I expect better. And the January issue was better, and I've heard the mag is getting back to hard training and consistently good advice for women who seriously lift - where it was a few years ago, in other words. I the meantime, Muscle and Fitness Hers is back. It's pretty good.

The judging has no effect on who made the to 6 and won't have an effect on the Grand Champion(in my opinion). EAS will not put it into our hands to make a decision for a multi-billion $$$ company.lol. I wouldn't be surprised if you see a few Grand Champions running around. They have told the top 6 no way, no how, but They also said it was going to be top 5. Who knows, I still think they are making up the rules as they go, and they have every right to. Don't be upset if your favorite BFLer is at the bottom. If you are stressed in the slightest about the voting, imagine what they are going through. Unless the land down under goes under, I don't see anyone catching Aaron. Then again I didn't think I would end up in the top 15. Top 6, keep your head up and remember that you are all Champions in my book. Kenny

generally, in jeans anyway misses jeans sit higher on the waist juniors have a (I don't know any other way to put it) more SLEEK cut in the thighs......ladies with larger thighs may have difficulty finding a comfy fit in a junior size ie...the thighs may fit but the waist may be too big.

Hi all, I keep reading about mean comments, so I am a little scared to post... anyhow, I have had it my goal to get up at 6 am and exercise for the whole last challenge...and it happened like 4 times in 12 weeks. I still exercised, but was in teh middle of the day when my daughter napped, sometimes when all three of my kids were trying to get on the treadmill with me. Here are my excuses and hopefully you guys with some of the same excuses can offer some helpful insight. I am a night person...before kids would sleep until 10 every day. I live in Utah and it is cold. I go into the unfinished basement to my treadmill and bowflex and it is probably 50 degrees.Next, my husband goes to work early sometimes and I don't like being 2 stories away from my children and not hear them (even though they are sleeping). Last, it is dark at 6 am and I am a little of a scardy cat. Anyone with any of these issues have any success? I know if I could get into the habit of am exercise it would make my life so easy....HELP!

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (574 posts) at 11:13 AM:
Perhaps a space heater for the basement---you could run downstairs turn it on (or get your dear husband to do it for you:) By the time you were dressed in your workout gear the basement would be warmer. One of those baby monitor things for the kids so you can hear them? That way you won't be alone in the basement either :) As for the scaredy cat part..hmmm..When I am freaked out about going down to my basement, I stand at the top of the stairs and say, "OK, if there's anybody down there WATCH OUT, I'm coming down, I have muscles and I'm not afraid to use them!!!" If anything it makes me snicker on the walk to the basement :) Alot of people say that the best time to workout is in the morning. What I have found is that the best time for me to workout is when I can get it done. Sometimes that is in the morning, sometimes it's mid-day or evening. So long as I get it done, that's the best time for me.

I am a scaredy cat too. I don't like running outside when it is dark. Maybe temporarily move your treadmill and BowFlex to a warmer room upstairs for the winter? That way you won't freeze your buns off, and will be closer to the children...

I know what it feels like when you have kids. Most of the time it is VERY difficult to exercise. I too have been a night person. This current challenge I have been exercising more in the day than the first challenge which seems to make it a little easier. I still get up early enough to eat and it just seems to be more manageable to exercise during the day instead of early in the morning. I have a Soloflex in my basement and it is about 40 degrees down there. I put on a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, and then a light jacket. And I use an electric heater. (ha ha) It's not very fun - that's why I feel that I am just trying to "survive" the winter. The rest of the time, when I do lunges and squats, arm curls, when I work on my shoulders, triceps, etc. I do them upstairs so I really don't have to be down in the basement very long, thankfully. My son is on a workout program, too. I don't know how old your kids are but it seems like he is part of this too when I "make him workout" as he calls it. (ha ha) I don't over exert him in anyway, just some arm curls bench press, leg press and leg extensions - 4 exercises total without a lot of weight. Most of the time he wants me to put more weight on. I also found a kid's sized bench that is his. It has fake weights and he likes to pretend he is doing really heavy bench presses. (lol) As far as it being dark in your basement, how about buying one of those stand up lamps that you can get at Wal Mart for like 10 bucks? Just some suggestions. Let us know how it goes. Good luck! Anyway, hope this helps in some way.

Hey Sparkle. You know when the absolute best time is to work out? When you'll do it consistently. What I mean is, if you're truly a night person, excercise later. It should be something you look forward to doing, not something that you try and drag yourself to do. Next - Make your space work for you. I know about cold too, living in CO. Our weight room is in the garage and I know it's not fun thinking about gripping cold metal weights and beleive me, that garage is colder than 50 degrees. Or so it has been lately. I just dress for the occasion - layers and lifting gloves and an outer pair of gloves to protect me from the cold bars. And I have a space heater - between all that, I manage to get a workout in. But it's not ideal, I just think of summer. You could also try and get an intercom for your kids' rooms and the basement. That way you can hear what's going on. Admittedly I don't have kids, but I know other women here do. Hopefully they will chime in with some of their tactics. Also, check out Buffmother.com to see what Michelle Berger does. If she does it with 4 small children, anyone can as far as I can tell. Lastly, just experiment with all this. You'll figure out how to make it work for you. It's a lifestyle change and there are many ways to get it done. Good luck! You can do it!

Hi sparkleberry, 1st, I occasionally still run up the 17 steps in my house in 2 or 3 leaps after I have gotten myself scared!! So, you are not alone in that regards! :):) 50 degrees is cold but once you start working out do you not feel warmer? Is it possible to put some type of heater in the unfinished basement, a heater that does not release deadly fumes, or is it possible to ventilate the basement while heating? In my garage I use an outdoor propane heater for about 15 minutes and then shut it off for about an hour. It warms up enough in 15 min. that the fumes do not build up quickly. When I lived in NY I used a kerosene heater in my living room because when we would wake up it would be 25 degrees inside (the toilet bowl water would freeze on occasion). The kerosene put out more fumes than the propane one does but it sure saves on electricity, and as long as you are very aware of the danger of fumes and ventilate properly you can probably get by. Not an ideal situation but it works. How about adding a woodstove to the basement, and have your hubby start it up when he leaves for work? As for the kids being 2 stories away, we did not like being 1 story away so we bought a monitor for the room. We can hear our daugther when she cries and wakes up, and we are back upstairs within 30 seconds. It is difficult when all three kids want to be on the treadmill with you. We finally had to start going to the gym that has a daycare so we could work out, and we only have one child. As for getting up at 6 am, you are just going to have to be sure to get to bed early enough to allow you to get 8 - 9 hours of sleep, and then will yourself awake. I have been able to get up at 4:15 am since Oct 23 about 98% of the time after YEARS of not getting up until 6:30 - 7 am. I decided I wanted to workout and not be heavy anymore. I wanted to workout with my buddy Ray and since he works out at 5:30 am, I had to get up at 4:15 to get ready and to drive to the gym. After a week or so, getting up is not as hard anymore at that hour. Yes, it is tough to start but you can do it. The 7 - 9 hours of sleep really help. If I get less, it is difficult to get up, and I do not even try. Last night was an example of this. I worked my 2nd 14 hour day in a row and when I left the office at 11 pm, I decided there was no way I was going to get up for my UBWO on only 4 hours of sleep. SO, it will do my UBWO tonight! I hope this helps. I will not be able to respond until later tonight if you have further questions but ask me anyway, and I will answer tonight. Good luck!! amkazen

If I told you that if you woke up at 6 am you would be a better mom by 33% would you do it, If I told you that if you woke up at 6 am you be abtter wife by 33% would you do it? If I told you that if you woke up at 6am you would get 33% more effect from your work out would you do it. If you do get up at 6 you will find that you will be able to go to bed earlier and fall asleep easier. Then when 6 am comes around it will seem like the end of the world. No set that alarm and get up!!!!!

alright guys...i am getting motivated. I think i will get the monitors set up. I will get the house to kick up the temp around 5:30 so at least so it feels better in the house. Then I will dress warm to go down... Mostly, I need to get my butt in bed early... The 33% stats sound great, did you make those up, or are they proven??? SOunds about right to me. The most put together girls I know...have skinny bodies, clean houses, always look nice and seem to "be doing something right" all exercise in the early AM there must be a connection there! Thanks I will let you all know how I do...(starting monday or course!)

You dont HAVE to workout in the morning so long as you actually workout later in the day. It makes no difference really. The 33% remark is based on the fasted cardio which I dont believe in anymore. The only reason I workout in the morning is because if I dont do it when I first wake up I'll talk myself out of it during the day.

I don't subscribe to the fasting cardio theory, either. I men, it SOUNDS like it would work, but I've never found any evidence of it when I did it.

Hi, Sparkle Berry. Everyone has given you great suggestions. Here's a couple of things I'd add or really emphasize. 1st, according to Bill Phillips in the BFL book, if your primary goal is to lose fat, then you should workout (aerobics and resistance) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. 2nd, you should create a daily schedule and put your family on it. Planning your ideal day will help you stick to it better. It should include putting the kids to bed early so you can go to bed early to get enough sleep to get up at 6 am. Hopefully, your kids are still sleep that early, so with the monitors you should be able to focus completely on your workout. 3rd, consider moving your equipment upstairs in the house. If that absolutely won't work, then you've got suggestions for keeping it in the basement. 4th, turn your basement into a gym with an energetic, motivating environment (ex. bright lights, electric heaters, wall mirrors, upbeat music, TV, secure entrances, etc.).

Hey Gang! I know I have not been posting on here in awhile. Kinda just hanging out on my web-site/blog. For those who know me here and for those who are new I thought I would update what is going on with me. OK honestly it's because I have to be accountable and no better place than to put yourself in the fishbowl and go for your dreams. Right? So I am announcing that I am starting my training and dieting down for Figure Competition in 2006. We had a few dates in mind. But nothing in stone yet. Due to figuring out how long it is going to take me to get where I need to be to take those steps out onto stage. Right now I am on my lean out diet and am starting my cardio sessions. Whew, cardio what is that? I am so dreading the first week of this. Due to coming off of an embarrassing but very disabling injury (I will not even go into this) and illness the past 2 weeks I will be starting back to lifting very, very soon. Possibly next week. Which is fine getting into the cardio loop again and just focusing on getting into that routine AGAIN is just fine with me. 2 days into dieting and I have been extremely clean. It's just 2 days of many but the important thing is to take it one step at a time. No matter if your doing BFL or dieting down for competition. No matter what one day at a time is the most important for everyone. So, that is where I am at. I will probably pop in and out of here. I know this place helped me get through my very first challenge almost 1 year ago. And was a great place to share with others triumphs and yes even the downfalls. But the best part is everyone was always here to help pick you up again. As I know there will be "those" days. I will keep you guys updated. Even if no one is interested LOL at least I feel as if I am keeping my promise first to myself and also to others. So, here is to competition in 2006. Hope everyone is having a great day! Take care. Hugs!

Teresa

At this stage, my competition is certainly with myself, so I applaude your efforts! How did the workout partner/trainer thing go? For me C3 is certainly much better and producing more results than the hateful, miserable, lackluster C2 :) Yours in Health, Kerry

Kerry! Hey Merry Christmas to you and your wonderful family too! Well, since my first challenge it sparked this dream once I saw some competition photo's of girls in Oxygen. When I was younger in my early 20's I knew a few girls who did this sort of thing and I always dreamed of having a body like them. Just beautiful and muscular and sculpted. But you know when your young lol you just think and say you dream about it. So thats where competition came into my mind last year. But I definitely am in competition with myself as well. Sometimes I can be my worst enemy LOL. I love my workout partner! She is the shiznit x's 10 lol. We have become fast friends. we hang out a lot and it is so nice to have someone else that is just so freaking passionate about fitness and being your absolute best. BUT... also understanding when things like binges and falling off the wagon, or getting injured happen as well. It is so nice to have someone who has been at the top of this game tell you this happens to everyone! Even the top pro's. Def. don't feel alone or lost anymore. And the friendship is priceless. Plus, I swear we spend the whole workout Laughing our butts off. Sometimes we have to say STOP so I can lift dang it! Yea C2 was a bust and I don't even want to talk about the other attempts. LOL BTW you are looking great! Hahaha sorry so long but I feel as if I am catching up with an ol' friend hey I am catching up with an ol' friend LOL. Alrighty is it time to eat meal 2 yet dang it? LMAO.... Take care and Merry Christmas!

I'm ALWAYS interested too. It was C4 that got me. I started a new program a few weeks into it and have been putting on muscle and bulking since (the bulk is definately unintentional). Since then I've stopped counting but I'm somewhere in the first few weeks of C5. I'm considering starting a "new" C5 Jan. 2 & actually going back to old fashioned BFL or trying Max OT; haven't decided yet. I'm interested & curious to know how long do you think it might take? Are you looking at 12 weeks or longer. Also, would you be interested in listing what your daily menu consists of for cutting as in meal by meal? I always think that this is a "secret" - is it???? Can you share???? Good luck Teresa, behind you every step of the way! Tracey

Thread: BFL bad for kidneys? (155 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ggrace (58 posts) at 03:57 PM: BFL bad for kidneys?
I just recently had a strange discussion with a friend of mine. She said that a few of her nutritionist friends (who are employed as such) said that BFL wreaks havok on your kidneys. I didn't understand what she meant so when I asked her she said something like it is hard on your kidneys to have an equal balance of carb and protein. They would recommend a slightly higher carb (like 60/40) not 50/50. Anyone else heard this same arguement? Anyone have any thoughts?

Body for Life Forum Message by DeanaRae (126 posts) at 04:02 PM:
Apparently High-protein diets are associated with reduced kidney function. I think that is more of an issue with UNBALANCED High protein diets like Atkins.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (698 posts) at 04:18 PM:
Its not just BFL its all bodybuilding diets. They all say too much protein will cause kidney damage. I dont believe it. Nutritionalist are taught stuff based on sedentary people. Speak to a sports nutritionalist and you might get a different opinion. Read this link for more info. http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=337536

Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (264 posts) at 04:42 PM:
Here's my two cents worth....I think if you consumed about 300 grams of protein a day, there would be some risk of damaging the kidneys but not 100-150 grams per day. Seems like people take extreme cases where someone has a kidney problem or a disfunctioning kidney and uses it in every instance to defend their claim. My cousin, for example, was born with a rare kidney disease. He eats no protein whatsoever because his kidney can not digest it. But his case is the exception instead of the rule or the majority. I've never heard of anyone else ever who have had kidney problems from digesting too much protein.

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (574 posts) at 04:48 PM:
Hmmm...I wonder then, if I only have one kidney if I should only be eating half of what it says on BFL.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2353 posts) at 05:18 PM:
Well since BFL is not 50/50 and IS 60/40 what do you have to worry about? Carb = fist Protein = palm First > palm. 60 > 40 See my meaning?

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (574 posts) at 05:21 PM:
I see what you mean. So I guess my next question would be...how many grams of protein are in a palm-sized portion (roughly - I know it will depend on the size of your palm)

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (198 posts) at 05:32 PM:
the best way to determine that would be: figure out how big your portion is, then weigh it on a digital food scale. Then use the weight of the portion to determine its caloric and macronutrient content on a site like fitday.com that allows to to customize amounts, etc.
