Thread: Shoulder pain... (82 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (41 posts) at 05:46 AM: Shoulder pain...
I have been feeling a sharp pain in the tip of both shoulders that doesn't seem to be going away... Most of the time I can't feel anything.. but every now and then (like rolling over in bed) it will really shoot pain through-out my body. My shoulder excersizes seem to not be helping at all.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem and does anyone know if it will eventually go away? At this point.. It doesn't look like it. I may just have to have a doctor look at it.

Ed, I'm not a doctor, but I suggest to go see one, and put off your shoulder exercise, if that hurts or makes your condition worse. Have you tried ibuprofen?? I have suffered a few minor injuries in my BFL journey, and I just took some time off for whatever hurt, and that helped. Good luck~ Kana

Body for Life Forum Message by Jitter2001 (41 posts) at 07:10 AM:
Thanks Kana.. I use ibuprofen but it doesn't seem to help.. Yeah, I am going to go see a doctor about the issue.. I mean.. My shoulder isn't in constant shooting pain but there is always a dull pain 24/7. -Ed-

Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (70 posts) at 07:21 AM:
I hope the doctor can help, but if he/she can't, or even worse just prescribes anti inflammatories and rest (as has happened to me in the past) I'd recommend finding a good osteopath, chiropractor, or sports physio. There's always a reason for these things and often GP's don't have the specialist knowledge to properly diagnose and treat these issues. I hope it gets sorted out soon.

Thanks for the advise. I'll look into it. -Ed-

Hi, Ibuprofen does not work for me until I take 800 mg. :):) I usually take that amount of ibuprofen after hitting the wake face first at 22 mph behind my buddy's boat! Oh, make that the 2nd or third face plant! Have you tried lower weights? My left shoulder has something wrong where there is no pain but it just gives out completely. I also notice it when driving and I rest my left on the window. It is a soreness that alwasy seems tobe there. I went to less weight and it seems to help. I am going to the doctor in January for it but it is taking a number (a backseat) to my calf and abdomen problems. So, go tot he doctor and try less weights.

Body for Life Forum Message by annie1104 (264 posts) at 02:23 PM:
I had the same problem. Found out that I was trying to do lateral raises with too much weight. These muscles don't require a lot of weight. As soon as I gave my shoulders a rest and went to less weight, the pain went away. I would still see a doctor for the pain, but the above advice about reducing your weights is good advice!

Body for Life Forum Message by Kathcandu (179 posts) at 02:52 PM:
I have trouble with my rotator cuff. It hurts when I do lateral raises, but then gives off a dull pain every once in a while. I would definitely see a doc. I try to do front raises instead. Anything that makes it flair up is probably not good, so maybe take a shoulder break until you get into a doc.

I would like to incorporate some yoga into my schedule. Does any one have suggestions on best times, after which work out day is more efficient? Any one currently doing yoga? and which type do you see best results?

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (126 posts) at 05:35 PM:
I do Bikram-the room is heated to 105-108 degrees. You go through the same series of poses (called asanas). The heat really relaxes your muscles, as well as helps your body detoxify itself. I love to do this at the end of my day, so I can go home and get the best nights sleep ever! It leaves you feeling challenged, renewed, and refreshed. It really helps to tone your body. My man thought yoga would be a piece of cake and went with me. He later admitted how challenging he found it( "they make it look easy") it is a mind/body/soul experience definetly worth looking into. I don't count it as any particular part of BFL, I do it in addition to my a.m workout. I have a fused spine and this helps me so much. I lived in chronic pain for 3 years, and medicine couldn't do what yoga and BFL has for me. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by wwiddler (3 posts) at 06:01 PM:
Thanks, I have done bikram to a tape before and loved it (We live near Telluride, so no real certified teachers). I hear people raive about its cure for back pain, and I can always use a little of that. I have made my guy try it also. What a sight. I think he's afraid if he gets limber he can't use the excuse that he can't put lotion on his own back any longer. We are both snowboarders also, so that is my main reason I want to incorporate some sort of streatching techniques. It is helpful to know what time of day works best. Thanks for the info, I feel like I want to run home and do something right now! Hope your enjoying the Colorado heat waive!

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (126 posts) at 06:47 PM:
LOL- I'm sweating in this heat. I'm jealous-love Telluride :) Hope this snow keeps coming-man what a season so far! I've got 17 days in already and I'm begging for more :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2041 posts) at 03:25 PM: Protein Powder
I've read/heard that not all protein powders are created equal; there are some better than others, ie. body more readily absorbing them. Is this true? If so, why? How can you tell if one is more superior than another? Please don't tell me price :-) Tracey

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 03:37 PM:
Well it is said that whey protein isolate is the highest quality. Most lower priced protein powders (sorry it is based on price) are a mix of isolates, concentrates, and peptides. If you are not lactose intolerant I dont see the benefit of buying a pure isolate.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2041 posts) at 04:32 PM:
Thanks chuck. I'm not lactose intolerant (as far as I know) but I purchased one that is on the lower end but not just because of price, its the one that I like the taste of best. I don't know isolates, concentrates & peptides. Its 100% whey protein, no soy, wheat or casen proteins. Mean anything at all?

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 04:34 PM:
You would have to look at the ingrediants to see. I use Optimum Nutrition 100% whey and it contains isolates, concentrates, and peptides but it seems to be working great for me.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2041 posts) at 04:53 PM:
Mine is Ultimate Nutrition. I've read Designer Whey is a superior one. Looking at the ingredients I didn't see anything you were referring to as far as the isolates, concentrates, peptides - its all a foreing language to me LOL.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 05:23 PM:
Is it this?

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (17 posts) at 05:24 PM:
I'm new to protein powders and I started with Designer Whey since it was a name I recognized when I got to the store. I was SCARED that it would taste pretty funky but it's pretty good. I know you asked more about quality, but for me it didn't matter if it was high quality if I could not choke it down. My kids LOVE the Chocolate Designer Whey (though I told them today I did not get it for THEM!) Eileen

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2041 posts) at 05:37 PM:
Chuck - yes it is.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 05:51 PM:
Ingrediants listed on the back of the bottle: Premium Ultra and Microfiltrated Whey Protein Concentrate, Crystalline Fructose, Soy Lecithin I hate to say this but those ingrediants look pretty crappy for a whey protein powder. And I cant believe they put any type of soy in a whey product. Do they not list ingrediants on the label? I know you live in Canada, the laws might be different.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2041 posts) at 05:59 PM:
Yeah, thats it. So its time to switch? Okay I'm a stupido, don't know the difference. Is Desinger Whey that great. Te, he, not only am I dummie but now I'm asking for someone to do my homework too? Is that a bad thing?

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 06:05 PM:
LOL, I dont mind. I enjoy researching it. Designer whey looks much better. Optimum Nutrition is another very good product that is the same price as Designer. Do you buy locally or online?

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (145 posts) at 07:30 PM:
Honestly I hate Designer, I don't think it mixes well or tastes good. I am going to try Optimum cause I have read and heard good things about it. Good luck!

The smell could be a bit much but over all it was a great product. I think I'm going to try something different for my next pictures (in 6 weeks). I haven't decided what just yet but it will be another experiment.
Thanks everyone for your input! Let me know what you think.

Lots of soap opera drama here that is for sure, but both you and Dustin running and "removing" yourself only makes you look guilty. We all didn't do anything wrong...and since I feel so strongly on this issue, I refuse to go away, I refuse to run and hide, I refuse to remove myself, or create a new profile. I can take all that these uptight people want to dish out. We are all different and as such I will continue to be who I am, a fun loving harmless flirt. The problem here is that THEY have lost focus on what BFL is about....positivity...not negativity, and for them that is all they care to focus on. Not me, I am kicking ass on my program, I have made some amazing friends that I will probably have for life...I've had a ton of fun here and plan on continuing to do so under my original profile name....I will continue to encourage, motivate and inspire...I will continue to feel heart ache for those who are struggling or hurting, or even fighting for their life like Julie right now at this moment. Life is short and I won't run from it!

I live in St Pete, Fl and here are some facts from me: YES - it is God's waiting room as everyone suspects!! There is absolutely NO time of the year that we do not have entire civilizations that visit us and crowd the streets going slow while I am trying to get to work. I have personally witnessed snow flakes so I don't care what ya'll say, IT GETS DARN COLD DOWN HERE!!! What can I say, my blood is thin LOL!! I am a hop skip and a jump away from the beach, Bush Gardens and Disney. But it is a bitch to drive out of the state! We do have the best citrus and nothing beats fresh squeezed orange juice from the oranges in your backyard. And nothing beats a sunset on the beach every day!!!

Sorry crone, I lived in Cleveland since I was born and couldn't wait to get out! (anywhere up there is too darn cold for me!) I moved to Clover, SC (huh? where?) A small town outside of Charlotte, NC with about 4000 people... -we pass cows, horses, sheep, and a donkey on a daily basis - less than two miles from my house is a pair of domestic zebras (really!) - I often have the YMCA gym all to myself - one great perk even if the gym is tiny! - Walmart is a weekly shopping trip down here - if you're hungry there's BBQ, BBQ, and did I mention there's BBQ? - I will be driving 80 miles to get some decent feta cheese for Christmas! But it's a wonderfully safe place to raise children, real estate and taxes are an absolute steal, and the people are awesome - polite in every way!!

Ok, stereotypes of Scottish people and my country?! Can I first just say that Scotland is NOT in England, we are in fact all part of Great Britain along with Northern Ireland and Wales! It's like a Canadian being called an American..doesn't always go down too well! 1. We do not chase haggis in the highlands! "Haggis" cannot run. I'm sure it might have been able to when it was part of all the animals it used to once be a part of but not as a haggis! 2. We do not all eat haggis (it's actually really gross and only a handful of people I know eat it!) 3. We do not all have ginger hair. In fact true ginger hair i.e. wiry, bright orange coloured hair is quite rare. 4. The men do not all wear kilts (or skirts as they are known to others!) This is actually a shame as a kilt is about the sexiest thing a guy can wear, yummy! Far better at a wedding than a suit. 5. Most of us have never even seen a real caber, nevermind tossed one. 6. Lots and lots of Scottish have never seen the highlands as it takes a bit of travelling to! 7. We are not all drunks..some are, some aren't! Some true things about Scotland. 1. It is cold! The summers are pretty crappy here and the winters can get very cold. 2. It does rain. Again the summers bring a fair amount of the wet stuff from the sky. 3. It is a gorgeous country. If you go up North it's beautiful. Rolling green and purple hills with lovely brooks and rivers...gorgeous in any weather. You can stay in lovely inns with crackling fires and breathtaking scenery. http://www.visitscottishheartlands.com/main/gallery/index.cfm I honestly do not work for the Scottish Tourist Board...I just think my country is a bit special. Yx :)

I forgot to mention that right here in my own town was where the very first movie was made. Thomas Edison's work was done here in West Orange and they filmed "The Great Train Robbery" in the reservation. In addition, how could I forget the famous people from here. Some of you may be either too young or too old or just not into celebs but here they are: David Cassidy, Ian Zeiring (from 90210), Michael Pitt (from Dawson's Creek and some movies), and Scott Wolf (Party of Five). Scott wolf was a friend of my brother's and I think I babysat for him once. Oh yeah, Derek Jeter's parents live a mile from me (or at least they did). We have practice rink for the New Jersey Devil's.

Alrighty ... I live in SLC, but I've only been here a year, so I'm not an expert. Here are my Utah/Salt Lake City observations: Polygamy: It exists, but the polygamous families who live commune-style are not recognized by the "Mormon" church, or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The polygamous families commonly thought of live in southern Utah and a sister town in northern Arizona, and they are part of the FLDS church, run by a man who has been on the lamb for two years now. There are some polygamists who live in the "mainstream" parts of Salt Lake, but you only here about them when they make the news or write letters to the editor. True stereotype: This is a very conservative state. False belief about this place that really aggravates me: That the two major newspapers, The Salt Lake Tribune and The Deseret Morning News, both belong to the LDS Church. This is absolutely false! The Deseret is church-owned; The Tribune is owned by a Texan, same guy who owns The Denver Post. True stereotype: Compared to other places I've lived, including Nebraska and South Carolina, this is a very "white" state. There is little racial diversity. It's increasing quite a bit as more people from California and Nevada move here to escape the crazy home prices (which are getting crazy here, too,) and take advantage of hot jobs. Falsehood: The Great Salt Lake is not attractive. It is stinky, boggy, gross. And it is shrinking. It also has hyper dangerous levels of mercury, so much so that there's a warning about hunting and eating waterfowl from the lake. Falsehood: You CAN drink alcohol here, it's just a little bit more difficult than normal. Bars are called "clubs," and you have to be a member (pay a one-time cover charge), or be a member's guest, or just be cute enough to get in. The beer is 3.2 beer. In restaurants, you have to sit in specific places to drink wine or hard liquour.

I've lived in 4 provinces in Canada. Here's my take on them: New Brunswick; True: *There is a LOT of salmon fishing and fishing in general going on there! *It is cold...no matter where you live in the province! There's water surrounding it and running through it *People do have parties in their kitchens...it's closest to the cold beer *Donald Sutherland is from there *People really are friendlier in the east coast *We do have ski-doo races on the rivers in the winter *Most people drink a lot! *Often times you have to shovel your way out your front door False: *We all speak French! Even though NB is the only officially bilingual province, most people speak English That's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure more will come to me later Quebec: True: *The streets are made smaller than the width of a car :-D *There are signs that say, "You just missed your exit" :-D *The drivers are all crazy no matter what city you live in *When I lived there, you could borrow anybody's ID showing that you were 18 and get into a bar because the legal drinking age was 18 and at the time Quebec didn't have an official of-age card *You can't order a milkshake...it is not a unversal understanding. They do actually call it a Lait Frappe False: *I didn't live there long enough to figure out the falsehoods! Alberta: True: *People drive their ski-doos to work and there is designated parking at the mines (I worked in northern Alberta) *The road ends in Fort McMurray and you have to wait until winter when the river freezers over to drive any further north *You can drive when you're 14 *There are huge tax breaks! *Minimum wage at McDonald's in 2002 was over $10/hr *There's enough money floating around so that there is a full parking lot at the high school and kids own their own trucks *There are a couple of other things that are true, but I don't want to get in trouble for saying them! *It is gorgeous and peaceful at times *The northern lights are worth visiting for *The sun barely goes down in the summer and barely comes up in the winter *Probably more than 50% Newfies False: *Can't think of any right now...I'll come back to this one Ontario: True: *People in Toronto think they are the centre of the universe :-D *You really can spot an outsider as soon as they speak! Easterners and Westerners have distinct accents! *It really isn't the heat, it's the humidity! *They really did call in the army to clean up a snow storm False: *You can wear shorts and t-shirts all year round in Toronto - not unless you've lived in northern Alberta or New Brunswick and have conditioned yourself to the cold *There are a bunch of women running around topless (for those who don't know, it is legal to do so) - I've only seen it once and thought it was a man *You can't swim in the lakes - you actually can but you have to make sure you read the notices posted stating the levels of fecal matter -blech! There are a bunch of things I'm sure I forgot but this should get things going :-D Connie

That's crazy, my co-worker was just telling me how over the weekend she put her baby in the car and her alarm went off so she turned it off threw the keys on the front seat, shut his door, went around to her door and it was locked! When she turned off her car alarm all the doors locked! Her baby freaked out started crying so hard he threw up...oh man, talk about a nightmare...it took over an hour and a half for AAA to come unlock her doors! She is going out today to get a Hide-a-key for her car!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by focusss (4 posts) at 10:53 AM: I think I'm an addict!!
Well, I'm at the end of week 3. Everything is going well, eating well, getting all the workouts in. I had my first free meal last night and treated myself to two pieces of fudge and two molasses cookies from the Christmas baking. Good Lord, what a mistake! I'm daydreaming about fudge this morning...I'm seriously CRAVING SUGAR TODAY! If I could shoot the stuff into my arm this morning I would! So far I'm trying to distract myself and have been good. I think this is what an addict must feel like when they go through withdrawal!!! checking through the coat pockets now for a sugarless piece of gum, anything.... lol

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 10:58 AM:
okay this might be a stupid question but is there a genetic reason why women crave chocolate so much? It just seems to me that women have a much harder time giving up the stuff.

I'm a recovering sugar addict myself, and getting off the sugar was one of the hardest aspects of this lifestyle. The amazing thing is that after about 1 month of really limiting only a small amount of sugar on my free day, I no longer craved it. Mood swings and eating compulsions were at bay. Amazing!! Even on the rare occasion I really crave it (usually monthly) I never go to town on it like I used to. I think my body is revolting:)

I know this post fits in on this tracker site because it is fitness related.......... Come on folks, let's move on past the posts from the 13th, or thereabouts, and the similar posts from back in October, and I am sure some from before then also. Let's concentrate on praying for Julie. Let's say a prayer of thanksgiving for delivering the newborn baby boy from death when his mother dropped him 3 stories to save him from a fire. Let's remember why we are here on this site: for positive reinforcement and messages, to help each other out. Let's help those of us who are trying again after multiple attempts. Let's...well, you get my message. I wish I could respond to some of the other threads from today and yesterday but I just do not to want to continue beating a horse to death...I love animals, and I am once again swamped at work so this it for me until maybe later tonight. amkazen It is well documented that for every one minute you exercise, you add one minute to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5,000 per month. ************************************************************************************************************************************ My grandmother was told to start exercising when she was 60 years old. So, she took up walking. Now, she is 97 years old and we do not know where the heck she is!! ************************************************************************************************************************************ I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I am doing! ************************************************************************************************************************************ I have flabby thighs but fortunately my stomach covers them. ************************************************************************************************************************************ The advantage of exercising every day is you die healthier. ************************************************************************************************************************************ If you are going to start cross country skiing for exercise, start with a small country. ************************************************************************************************************************************ I don't like to exercise because it makes the ice jump right out of my glass. (This probably came from Ron White) ************************************************************************************************************************************ I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. ************************************************************************************************************************************ I spent $400 last year on a gym membership. I have not lost a pound. Apparently, you have to show up.

Thread: 2 minute management course (79 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 03:55 PM: 2 minute management course
Lesson One An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, "Can I also sit like you! and do nothing?" The eagle answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Management Lesson - To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up. Lesson Two A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy." "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree. Management Lesson - Bull crap might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there. Lesson Three A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him. Management Lesson - (1) Not everyone who craps on you is your enemy. (2) Not everyone who gets you out of crap is your friend. (3) And when you're in deep crap, it's best to keep your mouth shut! This ends your two minute management course

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (172 posts) at 09:17 PM:
Getting along is great! Turning out like Rodney King? Not a good idea! Here is how he was doing as of 2001: ""He just wants to live a normal, quiet life," one of King's lawyers has said about her client. Yet he can't seem to stay out of court. Since that 1991 beating and his civil lawsuit against the LAPD, in which he won $3.8 million, King, 36, has been arrested on a string of charges involving alcohol, drugs and domestic violence. At press time, the latest was Oct. 14, when he was arrested in Pomona, Calif., east of L.A., for being under the influence of a controlled substance. He failed a sobriety test, then was taken to a hospital for treatment before he was booked. It was the third time in six weeks police picked up King. On both Sept. 29 and Aug. 28 he was arrested for being under the influence of PCP. He pleaded not guilty in the August incident and is due in court this week on the September charges, which also included indecent exposure." Talk about somebody needing a transformation!

Can anyone recommend a few exercises for the quads using just dumbbells (or no equipment) besides squats? The leg developer on my bench is totally inadequate for extensions and I don't have easy access to a gym for equipment. Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (22 posts) at 08:14 AM:
Lunges are good so is alternating step-ups while holding dumbbells in your hands. Squats are great though and single legged squats are killers

Body for Life Forum Message by nutz (111 posts) at 08:15 AM:
Sure. Lunges work well. I recommend backward stepping and stationary lunges over forward stepping lunges; easier on the knees. You can also do squats while holding the DB's like you're gonna do shoulder presses. You can do wide stance squats with the DB's hanging in front.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (808 posts) at 08:24 AM:
Sissy Squats, and Front Squats if your curious how to do them go to www.bodybuilding.com and look up the exercises it will show you how to do them ;-) and also there is a list of different exercises there as well. Good luck! ;-)

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (757 posts) at 08:27 AM:
Dumbell lunges are great if you cant do that much weight. At some point you will not be able to hold on to the dumbells and still give your quads a good workout. I cant hang on to 75lbs dumbells for that long. My arms hurt :) Squats are awesome and are THE BEST leg development exercise out there. How come you dont want to do them?

Body for Life Forum Message by cvonseggern (6 posts) at 09:16 AM:
I *am* doing squats :) I just want more than one exercise for the quads, especially since BFL strongly recommends doing a different exercise for the final set on a muscle group. But I have to love a forum where I get 4 useful responses within 45 minutes of posting. Thanks!

Thread: Running long (44 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by cvonseggern (6 posts) at 08:07 AM: Running long
I just started BFL week 2 and I feel great, but my weight-training workouts are consistently running long. I did lower body today and including abs, it ran 1:04 instead of the 42 the book says I should have. I'm following the technique as exactly as I can and it just seems I can't stay on schedule. Is this relatively normal, or do I need to pick up the pace? Some of it is because I'm doing a few left/right side exercises, but that doesn't account for 22 minutes.

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (259 posts) at 08:51 AM:
my work outs stay relativly close to 45 minutes, but, I don't take the full 1 minute between the first 3 sets....I know that's not by the book, but, I have trouble sitting there for a full minute on the lighter weight sets.

I am so moved by the love and compassion you all are expressing for Julie and her family. Trust me that they know. I have told them. I love the candle idea. Sincerely, Stephanie

Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (22 posts) at 12:18 PM:
Forest Tech, I use the body fat calculator you can get at http://www.smartcalorie.com/ If you don't want to download one to your PC you can get some by doing search for "body fat calculators" I also have a pair of cheap calipers I use. Just pick one and stay with that method so your number are fairly consistant.

Thread: Why do you use the tracker? (192 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Flash (736 posts) at 08:24 AM:
I use tracker because it helps me keep my mind in BFL. Since I'm not surrounded by people doing BFL in real life, it's easy to lose that focus since the BFL lifestyle is so different from the way most people eat and exercise (or don't exercise). So during my first challenge, I read and posted in here a lot. I know it helped me stick with the program.

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (259 posts) at 08:30 AM:
I use the tracker because it's simply the best BFL site to help you keep track of your progress, to give and receive motivation and inspiration. Also, all work and no play makes jack (and everyone else) a dull boy.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (808 posts) at 08:35 AM:
I use tracker as a source of distraction from food, Elmo, Barney, going insane from those 2 t.v. creatures, and did I mention distraction from food? I use it for information & with everything I have learned I want to give back to those seeking help as well. I love fitness so much that I love talking about it 24-7 so seems I can do that here huh? LOL. I use it for motivation and all those fun things too. I also use it for general conversation amongst friends as well. Seeing how everyone is doing in there life as well. And to support them in whatever they need support in whether it be fitness, family, health, etc..... it really feels like a family at times around here. Thats what is so endearing about Tracker to me. ;-) Oh yea it tells me how much fat I have gained or lost too! Yes let's hope the New Year brings back the Big Bull!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (22 posts) at 08:59 AM:
I use it for motivation and to keep track of my progress. Also, I don't feel so alone when I see others on the same path to fitness. Thier successes, failure, and sheer will to get back on the wagon when they fall off. It gives me the inspiration I need sometimes to keep going with my original plans, get off my butt to exersice, and to eat clean. Geez, I guess I owe a lot of you a big thank-you! THANKS ;)

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (624 posts) at 12:04 AM:
Ocpant- Do you have a lot of parties you will be attending, or are you just talking Christmas with the families? I have learned to preplan for these events. If you are talking a party or two, make sure you eat a full BFL meal about an hour before going, drink lots of water, and keep water with you to sip on while you are there. Many of these functions should have some BFL foods, so look for the nuts dish or meat and cheese tray and just grab a couple and wander away, sipping your water munching on your nice BFL treat. Try putting some small treats in your pocket before you leave home too. For example, a protein bar, a baggie of nuts or sunflower seeds. Most of all..if you have something that is not on your daily plan, don't beat yourself up about it! Start with your next bite! Good Luck! Jennifer

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (44 posts) at 12:06 AM:
I've been thinking the same thing. I have felt so good while being on BFL that I don't even WANT to eat bad. Of course I will endulge a little on christmas but I'm not planning on going all out. You're right, I think you just have to decide what's more important...eating a whole tin of cookies, being stuffed to the brim and feeling awful about yourself or enjoying the holidays by eating in moderation, feeling healthy and proud for what you've accomplished!!! I'm planning to endulge only on Christmas day and go for a nice long run afterwards. :)

For me..I just recall how crappy I felt before BFL (and bloated). At functions I make sure I drink a ton of water, and make wise food choices. Also, before the function, I work out. It keeps me from "ruining" what I've done for that day..at least in my mind :)

Body for Life Forum Message by daisy23 (44 posts) at 12:20 AM:
i'm not really sure how to avoid them but i remember my track coach telling me to walk on my heels to stretch my shins and if it gets really bad...ice them. i don't get shin splints anymore but i have bruises up and down my shins, not sure if that's related or not.

Body for Life Forum Message by LittleBig (15 posts) at 01:20 AM:
I can only tell you what helped me. I had them and I was not stretching before working out. I started stretching and then I iced them after every cardio workout. They healed but it took about 6 weeks of icing.

I found if I run on the balls of my feet on the treadmill instead of hitting heel first, stops the pain for me. It's just trickier at top speed to run like that.

Body for Life Forum Message by Miss Fit (349 posts) at 06:16 AM: Re: Shin Splints
Shin splints have been plaguing me for months and I think it's because I ran through the pain.  First, I'd suggest getting new shoes - very important if yours are several years old.  You may want to visit a running store if your town has one.  The staff can watch you run and recommend the best shoe for you.  Second, I've been told the only way to "cure" the shin splints is to STOP running and switch to a non-weight bearing exercise like the bike.

You can also do some exercises, icing, etc. to help you heal.  I'm including a link that I refer to: http://www.watfxc.com/TF/TF%20Education/shin_splints.htm

Good luck. Hope you heal quickly.

All the best,
Rachel

I know a lot of people here do not want to hear people complain and cry on here and if you are one please stop reading. I am here to cry. I did BFL a while back and have had great success, but have never TRULY stuck threw with it. I do great and then I quit! I have not done any dieting for a short while and my scales broke 3 months ago(bad sign) and so I have not stepped on a scale in 3 months. I am one that has to weekly or I have no food boundaries. Now with no scale, I in my less then 5 foot 1 inch body got on a new scale today and I am at 247.5. I was going to start BFL New Years day I've had this planned for weeks now but after the scales to day I start tomorrow. I am so unbelievably depressed that I am not even excited about starting as I have always been before. I feel like I have failed so many times before why is this time going to be any different. Please I am not looking for a pitty party I just need some of my BFL friends back or even some new ones. I feel more scared then I have ever , I know I have to do this but in my heart, mind, stomach what ever it is says I just don't think I can. I am tired, I hurt, I am so very unhappy I am killing myself and taking my family down with me. Sorry for being so long just need to talk, I hope you understand. CourtneyM

Courtney, don't give up, you can do it! And please be kind to yourself, you deserve it. I think I know how you feel. I've struggled with many failed BFL attempts for three years now, and I'm still nowhere near where I want to be. Over the years I've progressively got bigger, more miserable, and distanced myself from everyone around me. But finally, slowly but surely, it's turning around. It is so worth sticking at this!! If you're anything like me, you might be beating yourself up for having got to this point in the first place, I know those "beatings" were holding me back from moving forward for quite a while. Here's a great quote that struck a real chord with me from Nicole's blog yesterday (hopefully she won't mind me posting it here): 'Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.' -- Carl Bard To check out the whole post go to http://www.bodyforlife.com/community/blog.asp?author=nheyrman&apL=5. You may also want to give some thought to working on the inside as well as your body. Low self-esteem can make one go back and forth on diets, and undermine sucess. You need to learn and understand your value and realize that you are worth it. Maybe a trip to the library to get a few self help books would be a good idea too :) Big hugs Ursula

Dear Courtney, After many 1/2 hearted challenges and trying to "tweak" the program (to which i ended up either over trained or over fed) i too wanted to give up. If you check my profile picture there is a picture of my 20 month old daughter. She too was and is the reason (one of them) why i am on the challenge. I said to myself 22 days ago that enough was enough, stop trying to re-invent the wheel and sit down read the book and get down to basics. So i did, got out my pen and paper and followed bills advice, wrote down my goals, wrote down my reasons and made that decision. I now follow the program to a T. I will finish this challenge, i will come out a winner and so will you. You have nothing to loose except that of pounds and inches. We are all here to give each other strength, use your friends on this site for that light which is at the end of your tunnel. We all can not walk each others path for them but our bond and friend ship lites the way. Many a time has people on this site and on the bfl site come to my rescue. You can do it! Just make the decision, and the rest is history. God Bless from Cyprus Pan

I'm with Ursula on this one. I did the challenge a few years ago too, had great success only to gain the weight back again. I had to take time to read some books to deal with my emotional turmoil. I had to be healthy inside, confident and stop beating myself up 24/7 and realize that I am a good person, deserving of so much more in my life and that included my health. I had to believe that I was strong enough to make the necessary changes in my diet and exercise....you really need to work on you...your mind...your mental health...that was the only thing for me that makes this work...I believe in myself...you need to believe in you and you might need help to do that! This time can be different!

Scared is OK, hon! I want to be another to say that so much of the struggle is forgiving yourself for where you've been. I've let that very thing keep me down -- am still overcoming it. Keep in mind that you are making positive changes for positive reasons, not because "old" Courtney is "bad" or because you have to punish yourself for the past. A good friend on here (getnfit) once told me that I need to be OK with comforting myself when I am in pain -- even if that means comforting myself with food or staying in bed. If you need to comfort yourself, there is already something sad going on. The last thing to do is beat yourself up AGAIN because the comforting wasn't "right." It's a very big leap to make, very big. But it's more important than completing a "perfect" challenge, in which you never cheat or miss a workout. The exercise and diet are only a symptom. Your physical state is not the problem, it is the problem's way of saying "Hey, something's wrong!" Don't be afraid to take baby steps and make sure you are cheering yourself (and letting us do it, too) every single step of the way. Water -- hooray! Dressed and showered -- hooray! Good food choice this meal -- hooray! ((hugs)) Karenna

1978.. Crowley is near Fort Wirth, corretc? If so, there must be other BFL'ers in your immediate area you can connect with for in-person support and help. That is what is helping my wife an di to be successful here in NM. The cyberspace friends you ahve here are great but in-person talks, workouts, and fun get-togethers sure beat a "voice in cyberspace." The self-help books are an excellent answer because if the mind is not behind the desire to change, the change will not occur. I think that is one reason why all of a sudden I could one morning start getting up at 4:15 am when I had not been able to get up before 7:00 am for years. I made a firm decision to change. My mind was made up. I hope you can find some local support. If you cannot, get your husband to move you & your kids to Albuquerque and you will have the in-person support you need here!! :) PS Ignore those friends and family members who tell you you cannot do this, to stop, to spend more time with your kids, etc. because they are saying those things because they are afraid of you changing for the better, leaving them behind in their current state. You do what you know is best for yourself and your family: getting to a healthier state!! Ask yourself what would your Dad want you to do? Change? Or stay the same? Especially if he knew he was going to be called back to his Father at age 49?

On my third attempt I made it all the way to the 9th week, and quit. However, I had done somethings this time around to ensure that I at least complete A challenge. 1) Getting my kids at school to hold me accountable. 2) Getting another family member involved with me so we can support each other, and 3) Not just setting goals, but the REASONS for wanting to obtain those goals.

I then talked to the IFBB fitness pro who teaches classes at my gym and is the one who runs the contest. She's willing to help me for free! Cant beat that price can ya?? Starting next saturday shes going to evaluate me, test bf, and give me a 12 week meal plan and workout plan. Im very excited about this! Plus, I have to turn in my sheets to her each week so I will have that keeping me accountable as well!

well trust me...food has not been good at all. I've cheated all over the place. Haven't missed a workout in 5 weeks though. I've finally learned to continue even when I am not perfect. If that was ALL I learned...I'd consider this a benefit. I am certain there will be other things too :)

Here is my prayer- Lord, I know this may be a selfish thing to ask, but PLEASE bring Julie through this. She has helped so many people with her life that I pray that she may continue to do so here on earth. From Julie's lips, I know she has said that she will get to dance after this surgery either here on earth or in heaven with you. I pray that not only for Matt but for the rest of us who are here, that she may live, breathe and SHINE here on earth. We need her spark, her energy, her passion for life. Whatever your will I accept, but I am praying for a mighty miracle!! I pray this in Jesus name!! Shelly =) We miss you Julie and are praying HARD!!

Thread: How can this happen?? (190 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Prissy Crissy (56 posts) at 10:04 AM: How can this happen??
My neighbor & I had our annual Christmas Party. I bought a new, smaller pair of pants - snake skin looking. I had SO many complements that night of how great I looked, how skinny I was getting and how they could really tell I have lost a lot of weight. I was on cloud 9 as far as feeling great about myself. So, how can it happen that I have had a free day Friday night, Saturday & Sunday??? Not to mention that I just got done chowing down 2 cookies in my office w/ the door closed!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (760 posts) at 10:13 AM:
You're not alone, that's for sure! I've been off the BFL wagon for months (months!), but when I was on it, progress was often an invitation for me to relax. I didn't consciously think to myself, "I'm doing good, so I can eat for three days straight." But it did happen that way. Or, worse, I'd read about someone else having a slip-up, but then I'd look at their profile and see that they were doing awesome, so I'd think, "Well, it's OK if I eat seven protein bars in a row, because so-and-so does that every once in a while and they are still doing great!" Um, maybe so -- but that person was 110% dedicated MOST of the time, and then spoke up about the bad slip-ups. And that was never me. Here's what you do now: You've had three "bad" days and today has started off in the wrong direction with some cookies. LET IT GO! Don't berate yourself! You wouldn't think less of a friend, so treat yourself like a friend and be loving, kind, forgiving, accepting and give some good advice. A slip doesn't have to become a full-tilt slide. And you are NOT on a full-tilt slide. Stand up, get some nice, cool water and remind yourself who is in control. (That's YOU, not cookies!) Each little decision does matter, and your next one will be great! After you've made it, say to yourself, "I just made a great decision! I am on my way." Karenna

You are a wise woman. Great advice...I'll remember it the next time I have this happen. PS...you have a fantastic smile :)

Everyone slips up from time to time. You cant beat yourself up over it. I have a similar problem. Whenever I reach a goal, I seem to revert back to my old ways. I think a way to prevent this is to set new goals for yourself. Please be careful. Eating in secret can be a sign of an eating disorder. Im certainly not saying you have one but just be careful. There is no reason to hide what you eat.

Body for Life Forum Message by J Parker (53 posts) at 10:40 AM:
Chrissy - You made a choice, and you can right now make a different choice. Eating to much, eating the wrong things, you did it, look at it, own it and get on with it. Right now this minute look forward and start eating BFL style. You can do it. But YOU have to do it. We have all been there. As a matter of fact I was there last week. Not my free day, ate an ice cream cone. Logged it, next meal was BFL. As long as I determine to make progress and I dont quit, I will win. You can do this!!! Janice

Hey, Crissy! I love your screen name. I suspect YOU know the answer to your question far better than any of us ever would. You might go through the checklist. Was I: Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired? Stressed? Usually it's not hunger. Usually it's one of the other things that causes it. There can be other causes, such as operating with false belief systems about yourself. Ideas that if you screw up you deserve to be punished. That you cannot change no matter how hard you try; that you must have the approval of certain others in order to feel worthy yourself. Those kinds of things nearly always lead to a spiral of binge eating at the worst possible moments. You'll figure it out! Good luck to you. Hang in there.
