One of the main causes of death in ecstacy users is the swelling of the brain caused by over-consumption of water - not the actual drug itself!

Ok as I am cleaning the house and getting ready for the tidal wave known as the Holiday weekend.... I have so much going through my mind. Yes, for those of you who know me I am crazy and many thoughts drift in and out.... LOL.... part of my Bi-Polar charm ;-) But this one was good.
I challenge each and everyone of you to start thinking of your LONG term goals for the year fitness wise. I plan on spending New Years Day not Hungover for a few reasons. My body can't handle alcohol anymore and personally it is just to counter productive for me. I NEVER thought those words would come from me LMAO! Back to the subject.....well, I plan on spending the 1st day of the year in the Gym and writing out my goals, visualizing where I am gonna be this time next year. So off the top of your head list the first 3 long term goals you want to accomplish in 2006. I'll start it off ....
1) I would like to achieve all that I did not in 2005
2) To see 10% Body fat for the first time in my life!
3) I would like my body to look like a human anatomy class figure. Female form of course LOL.
That is the drawing board so far..... what are your top 3 that come to mind?

2. Lose 10% body fat (I think this is conservative for the entire YEAR)
3. Inspire more people to be healthy and happy
4. Be a better picture outside of how I think I look on the inside!

OK, I am from Melbourne Australia.
- Even though I live in the city, I say 'mate' and 'g'day' a lot
- Kangaroos do NOT frolic around the streets and suburban areas. However out bush they are real pests and I hate to admit I have run over more than one :(
- Melbourne is the better, prettier and more livelier city than Sydney. No doubt a Sydneysider will tell you different, but don't listen to them - they're just jealous.
- Yes, Tasmania (that little island at the bottom) is part of the country. New Zealand is NOT.
- Melbourne is famous for food and shopping. We host the Formula One, the Australian Open, and the nation stops for the greatest horse race, The Melbourne Cup. We even have a public holiday for it :)

Thanks for your responses everyone! How bad is it? Lately, I haven't counted pills-it was just a waste of my time and made me angry but when I did count it was probably about 15-20 a day. Plus the Xanax. I pretty much don't talk to him anymore-we work in the same office about 10 feet from each other so I really don't have much to say at home. He's just not a likeable person taking this crap. Every so often he goes off of them. Usually if he hits a dead end withthe internet pharmacy or if we are going to Italy. What a different person! We don't fight, everyone is happy. Weekends are bad. This is not new to me. It's been 17 yrs. of either pills or alcohol. A two yr. break from it all when he had a bad health problem and had to take some major drugs to combat it.

Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (48 posts) at 10:07 AM
Let me just add a few more notes: It's not an anger/rage issue. No police necessary-that's not even a thought. It's a personality thing. You take a very likeable, happy (seemingly)light-ish person and he turns into a brooding, miserable, mountain out of molehill everyting is a friggin tragedy kind of ew I don't want to look at you right now person. And then, he goes to sleep. (Good thing cuz I have to wake up earyly, ya know?) I think I am just a bit down this week because of Julie and this is on my nerves right now. Plus, I thought he was detoxing over the weekend and it turns out he had just run out and got a new shipment yesterdy. So, I got angry.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (777 posts) at 10:09 AM
Thats a lot of pills a day. I would be worried about the Xanax more than the vicodin though. Ive had some friends take that stuff and Xanax + vicodin + alcohol = Functional black outs. They cant remember anything the next day.
Its strange that he is nice when he's not on it because Ive been known to take 1 a week every so often and they always seem to make me depressed the next day.
I hope he gets help but he has to want to stop.
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (853 posts) at 10:30 AM
Heheheehe ok I am not laughing at this situation not at all! I am just remembering how it was and oh lord am I glad I am not there anymore. You need to get away from this. Have an ultimatum .... something. IF they do choose that this is ruining their life they are gonna need professional help to get off of it. I was a weird one with to many brain cells still left and quit a lot of hard drugs including pills cold turkey. Yes, I got VERY sick. YES life sucked. But it could not be any worse than where I was headed. But my advice is this person needs professional help if they choose to quit. If they don't as Porter Freeman says "you need to trim the fat".
I hate to tell you..... you need to move on with your life and let them go if they don't quit. And if they care about you it might take loosing you to inspire them to quit and stop. But don't be surprised if they have to loose you first. I am sorry that is hard to take. If you want to have a better quality of life then you are gonna have to tell them like it is and hope for the best. Obviously you are at your wits end if you are here asking for advice. You need to do something about it plain and simple.
Taking action and the aftermath of that is hard yes. But it is just a short time of pain in a lifetime. And taking action only moves you forward into the future. Not taking action just leaves you stuck, stuck, stuck. Moving backwards. I wish you the best I really do this is a very hard problem to deal with. My feeling on it is when someone is doing this much crap well I know your gonna get hurt emotionally one way or the other. Trust me an addicts first instinct is to choose the drugs first. And an addicts first fear is loosing the drugs not you. Your dealing with the drug not the person anymore. Unfortunately, that person is asleep. I hope this helps.
I am not meaning to sound harsh. I have been there, done that , got a flippin closet of T-shirts. Watched it happen to other people as well. It is not fun. It sucks! Just be very honest with yourself and them. Best of luck.
T
Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (48 posts) at 12:05 PM
TNT, you are not harsh! I know what you are saying! All of it- and you are right. I have nothing to say in defense of myself. I have given the ultimatum before and he quit but then went back to it. Of course, I didn't follow up. So, I am as much to blame in a way, enabling him. When it gets too much to bare again I'm sure I'll do something.
Chuck: It takes about 4-6 days for him to come around after stopping. When he stops he 'becomes a piece of furniture'. He can't do anything but sleep. Over this past weekend he actually started to get sick. Mostly because it depletes your serotonin levels and when you quit you have no fake energy coming in and you just can't move till you build back the serotonin.
According to Dr. Phil, it's relatively easy to get off Vicodin. You just have to stay off.
Since Vicodin dehydrates you, so he's been on it long enough that he has given himself hemmorhoids and I believe some tooth decay. He has become his own pain in the ass!!!

Hey, 3D! I think clearly the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do is to do something for yourself. Find an alanon or a narcanon meeting in your area, AND GO! You didn't start it; you didn't cause it; and you're powerless to stop it. Trying to do that will make you every danged bit as nutty as he is. So, stop that, and get help for yourself, while you still can! I am a recovered alcoholic, without taking a drink for 22 years. And, I'm also an Alanon, since my children when they got older made that possible for me!

What IS unusual about my world is that I regularly go fishing for Sturgeon .a fish that can be up to 0ver 20 ft long & live over 100 yrs.. they're as close to dinsaurs as you'll find around here!
We are involved in the Presevation Society as they became almost extict due to over fishing earlier this century..
what we do is, we catch them & then tag them with a microchip in a needle under their skin for tracking measure them & release them... Quite an adventure when you realize how damn BIG these things are...one I personally caught was too big to even try to bring on the boat!.. a bit Scary-- but quite the work out! ;)

Well, let's see. How about some medical conditions? Nothing earth shattering, but an interesting picture for someone who exercises nearly every day.Until I was an adult I had never broken a bone, had a stitch or been close to a hospital in my life. In recent years though, I've had three surgeries on one hand with some pins and metal thread applied to the thumb, three surgeries and a bone fusion and a pin and wires to my clavicle; three surgeries to my right shoulder; 1 to my left, and a surgery to my low back. According to the orthopedists who did the shoulders and the neuro who did the back, I am unable to lift anything overhead, and cannot lift anything weighing more than 25 pounds period. Suppose they would frown on my body weight wide grip pullups, added weight dips, and 255 pound deadlifts and squats? Shhhh. If anything goes wrong, I'll just find other doctors!

I have both anxiety (panic attacks, being incapacitated by changes in environment, huge social discomfort) and depression (dark, self-injurious thoughts, difficulty functioning, extreme fatigue, physical pain) and have been on an antidepressant for a little over a year. It's been a lifesaver (and I mean that pretty literally). It's almost completely relieved my anxiety (no more constant voice in my head telling me I suck!). My depression still lingers, but instead of bad months, I just have bad days. I feel like I actually have a life now.
Have you talked to your doctor? That's the place to start. I was pretty resistant to taking meds, and the first week sucked, but now I'm so glad I started. They worked better for me than therapy. Fact is, sometimes our chemicals are just messed up and need straightening out. It doesn't indicate anything wrong with our character or reflect on who we are as people--it's just a chemical imbalance. You'd go to a doctor to treat any other physiological problem, so why not this one?

I struggled with panic attacks for 8 years until I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse. I now take a pill a day and have no more problems. If you have any type of palpitations before having a panic attack... it would be a good idea to see your doctor and rule out MVP. It is a very common diagnosis that can be found by an echocardiogram.

I struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder...otherwise known as SADS or the winter blues (I use a full spectrum light and that has REALLY helped). It can be totally incapacitating. For those of you who struggle with depression, my heart truly goes out to you. I used to think that people who suffered from depression just needed to think happy thoughts. I just didn't get it. Since struggling with the SADS, I totally get it. I can only imagine the full-on depression is like SADS x 100.
Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (767 posts) at 10:14 AM
I've struggled with depressive episodes since I was a teenager. It comes and goes, often triggered by environment. I was in a depressed hole all throughout my four-year college term and managed to graduate with the help of Paxil and the will of God. ('Cause how else could I explain it?)
I quit Paxil after two years and had no problems. I survived a pregnancy with no post-partum troubled, but in the past year have been up and down again. It swings from depression to anxiety, whereas before it was only depression. I've strarted to develop the physical symptoms of anxiety -- heart speeds up, chest feels tight, short of breath.
I've been in counseling for a few months, and it is helping slowly. I'm resisting meds. On bad days, I say "That's it, I'm going to the doctor," then the next day is better and I figure I can beat it on my own, that it has been worse.
Mostly, it has been a damper on my weightloss goals. I've having to redirect everything to avoid the mental traps of perfection and all-or-nothing thinking.

In the past, I noticed I would get them whenever I felt like some things in my life were getting out of control. I felt as if I were having trouble breathing and an overwhelming sense of fear, like the world caving in around me.
I also noticed that they seemed to come around whenever I ate too many sugary foods. When I cut out the sugar, the severity of the attacks went down considerably.
I'm glad that gbfan mentioned that about the heart palpitations because I used to have them as well but never did tie the two together.
Hope you get to feeling better.

I also noticed that sometimes whenever I take sinus meds, it makes me feel like I am having a panic attack the next day. They say that people with any heart conditions should not take them. I just now realized that because it has been a while since I've taken any sinus medications but had to take some last night, now I'm feeling all jittery. I HATE it! I wish I would have remembered that before I took it.
What kind of symptoms are you having?
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (316 posts) at 10:34 AM
I had panic attacks.... in the past. I still have one once in a while but I can deal with it better now that I know what is happening. My symptoms were similar to heart attack symptoms so my docs did a lot of tests to rule out life threatening illnesses. Once they diagnosed it as panic disorder I was able to deal with it better.... I took meds for a short period of time but now I no longer need them..... please PM me if you need to talk or compare stories. Knowing others have gone through this really helped me.
Best Wishes..... Kelli

I have had anxiety/panic attacks and suffered from depression, although I did not know it was depression. 3 years of medication, 4 years of counseling, and starting a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ has helped me. I have been off the meds since August 2004 without a problem, and counseling is down to almost nothing now, but attending church and listening to the Christian station on the radio is WAY up.
Body for Life Forum Message by Shoe (29 posts) at 10:50 AM
Supa K, why are you resistant to meds? I didn't want to take them initially; felt like that would cement me as "crazy person!" and I didn't want to admit that something was really, really wrong with me.
Meds have come a long ways in recent years: fewer side effects and quicker results. You might not even have to stay on them very long...it's worth discussing with your doctor.
After about the first month of meds, I was *amazed* at how different I felt. I just felt more steady and, for want of a better word, normal. It's saved my marriage and my life.

I had no clue or symptoms I was depressed. I just thought that was what my life had turned out to be. I thought I ws normal. My panic/anxiety attack symptoms were tightening of the chest, feeling flushed/hot, unable to focus, and all coming on within seconds. It happened to me twice, once while driving, once while at my desk at work. Had to pull over and wait till it passed, and the other just sat there frozen. I also resisted meds. However, I gave in eventually and learned the psychiatrist was correct: the meds just help you relearn what "normal" is, and eventually you can come off the meds once you know for sure how you are to be emotionally. Once you know what normal is again, you recognize when you are getting off kilter again and how to stop it and get back on track. It took an outside person to id that what I thought was normal was not. The only problem with meds I see may be your job. I know that from personal experience.

My symptoms ALWAYS happened at night until my last major "episode" which happened while I was driving and my teenage son was in the car with me. That freaked him (and me) out. The kids knew I had "episodes", but never experienced seeing me have one. I used to beg my husband to take me to the hospital because I always thought I was having a stroke or something vascular.
After my last episode I went to the heart doctor and explained how my "episodes" felt. Usually my heart would beat "funny", then I would wake up. My body felt like there was (the only way I can describe it is) hot alka-seltzer running through my body. It usually started in my mid-section and went down my legs and up my chest to my arms. Then I would start swallowing uncontrollably and my breathing was irratic. I usually would get diahrea or feel like it. Sometimes I would jerk or feel tight in my muscles. It was like alarms were going off in my body.
I have had bouts of depression... I had mono when I was 25 and left me chemically messed up for a year or so. I do know that I am "wired differently". My emotions are sort of a roller coaster - my highs are high, my lows are low. What I perceive as sad is really overwhelmingly sad to me. What I perceive as SCARY... others don't think twice about it. I don't handle fear well at all. Heaven forbid one of my kids used to jump out from behind a chair to scare me for fun!!
The medicine they put me on after the MVP diagnosis is a Beta-Blocker (Inderal). I only take one pill a day (they recommended 2 a day). And that is enough to keep me pretty normal... at least normal for me! Ha! No more palpitations, no more panic attacks. My life is totally different.
Iceskater, early on in my symptoms I noticed I couldn't take cold meds either. My heart would beat crazy, and in my ears! I hated that. I would be all jittery and my heart rate would go way up.
amkazen, I'm with you on your source of strength. I don't know how I would've pulled through without having the Lord.
For those of you who haven't ruled out MVP... you really need to check with your doctor. Mine told me for 8 years that I was just having panic attacks. He thought it was something in my head. I lived a very scary existance, afraid that with every minute I'd have another episode. Going to the cardiologist was the best thing I did for myself.
And, y'all are so right. Exercise is a major component with prevention of panic attacks. You use up your endorphins in the gym, on the track, whatever, so they don't have to work overtime in the quiet of your day.
Feel free to PM me if anyone has any questions. I'm living panic attack free ... and have for the last 5 years.

I have delt with Panic Attacks since I was about 18. Combined with VasoVago Syncape (I pass out very easy) the combo was very bad. I would worry about passing out (say after a tough set of squats) a Panic attack would kick in and I would eventually pass out.
I have had a pacemake for the past 3 years to deal with the passing out and take an anti-aniexty med. Life has never been better.
I have found I will still have aniexty under certain circumstances, like not drinking enough water or too much caffiene. Not eating right or not working out.

Everyone has added such great posts. The only thing that I would add is to examine EXACTLY what you are consuming everyday. Are you eating alot of processed foods? Are you using alot of chemically designed sweetners (equal, nutrasweet, splenda, aspartame?) also, do you have mercury fillings? all of those things can have huge impact on your body chemistry. Just things to think about before trying meds :-) all the best!

It's really quite amazing how many people have turned to BFL in hopes of aiding them with their struggles with depression.
If you've ever read The Zone, it provides essentially the same eating information as the BFL book but with more details about the hows and whys of food and portions, etc. The Zone way of eating is a wonderful meal plan for anybody with diabetic issues.
So, essentially, if you have issues with blood sugar and are following the BFL way of eating, you should be okay.
I highly recommend reading The Zone as a supplement to BFL...it's quite informative.
A lot of things have changed for me since I started working out and exercising. My depressive episodes are fewer and farther in between than they used to be and they don't last as long. Also, I don't fall completely into a black abyss!
A few years ago, I was very unhealthy because I was overweight and didn't know what the heck was happening to me when I sunk down. Then, I found a doctor who took the time to explore what might be wrong and pin-pointed it as Bi-Polar.
We tried many medications (and by that I mean 6 of them) and we finally found a combination that brought me out of my stupor. It was overwhelming when I was trying to come out of it. I just went to bed one night and didn't get out of it the next day. I stayed in bed for 6 weeks...well, give or take a bathroom break! :-)
Sometimes medication works, but the most important thing is a correct diagnosis. In order to get than when dealing with any kind of mood disorder, you need a good doctor...which is, unfortunately, hard to find now. Well, for me it is. I finally found one who cared and it was game on from there!
So...to recap after typing way too much (sorry)...eat healthy, exercise, find a good doctor and try to figure out what foods are bringing you down. Sometimes, it's as simple as eliminating cheese!
I hope you're feeling well. If you need anything...obviously, we're all here for you!!

I have suffer from panic attacks and depression. I am on an antidepressant for the daily depression, but it doesn't help the panic attacks.
My panic attacks normally occur at night, when my body is saying that it is time to calm down, but my mind has other ideas. I can't shut my mind down and then I start getting this heavy feeling in my chest and on my shoulders. I can normally feel a meltdown coming on now, so I normally ask my daughter and my husband(now seperated) to give me space. I have been known to spaz out and throw something, but my doctor recently gave me a prescription for a nerve pill and whenever I feel one coming one at night, which is normally 2-3 times weekly I take one and it normally helps.
Surprisingly I also have a tendency to give up on dieting at night and purge. All tied into emotional control issues that I am working on.
You need to talk with your doctor about the best course of treatment. There are meds and ways to modify your behavior...relaxation techniques...etc. Just remember that most depression is caused from chemical imbalances in your body's chemistry and it is nothing that you can control.

In Georgia we register at the time of our license renewal, etc.
Myself and both of my sons (20 & 16) are organ donors.....
they weren't sure when they first got their license, then I told them that it is the greatest gift you can give. If something were to happen to one of them (a car wreck for instance) and they needed an organ it would be the most gracious gift someone could give me.....the life of my child, for a second time.

Okay, I have a choice; I am having 15 people over on Sunday for Christmas. I have 2 dogs, 1 very sweet and nice and fine with people. The other, very sweet and nice to family. He is fine in his cage but he may bark a lot and that would annoy us and our guests. So, I can board him or tranquilize him. The vet said it will not knock him out, it will just take the edge off. I just need him to not bark. I had no problem boarding him until I found out that he would need to be there by 11 am Saturday and I can't pick him up till Tuesday. I didn't know it would be 3 days. What do you think??????????????????

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (196 posts) at 11:00 AM
can'tstopme, I am LOL!!!
As for the dog, board him. Less temptation for anybody to mess with him, or for him to get riled up, which he still may do so even on drugs. Is there a garage or outbuilding you can put him in? What about a neighbor. Is there one who will take him for a few hours, saving the cost of boarding?
Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (48 posts) at 11:53 AM
I am LOL too!!! Can't leave him loose. He's protective of the living room. He's so strange. And yes, I am afraid he will bite someone. He is not a viscious (sp?) attack dog, he's just protective but I can't take that chance or make people uncomfortable. He is a greyhound mix. Cutist thing. Yes, if we keep him home and drug him, he will be in his cage in the garage. That way, if he barks, at least we wont' hear much of it. He likes his cage-it's his safe place. He actually might have been a 'wild' dog before we rescued him so he has come a long way!!

I would not have a problem giving my dog a mild, short-acting sedative if need be while I had a large group of people at my house.
Once we took another dog on a sea plane to an island. She was so scared and shaking. The vet that was with us gave her a very small dose of some sedative, and she was fine and totally back to normal by the time we got to where we were going.
Body for Life Forum Message by Mickymacb (394 posts) at 12:11 PM
We had to give our dog a relaxer for a 10 hour road trip. We gave him half the recommended dosage, and he was quite happy. He normally shakes in the car, and gets scared when cars pass, but he was one happy pup that day. :)
The vet we go to said the relaxer is one of the safest drugs for a dog. They recommend it for 4th of July, car trips, etc.
HTH! Micky

3D...have you ever boarded your baby before? If not-it can be kinda traumatic for him. New place, lots of noises, other dogs, etc. Have you looked into pet sitters? In my area there are some that sit in their homes, which at least would be a quieter, home-like environment for him.
As for the drugs-I hafta admit Ive used them before on my other dog Rodeo. Shes hyper as hell (her nickname is Psycho Girl). They just made her calm and loving but Im not sure if it would work the same way on yours. Good luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (48 posts) at 12:33 PM
Giggle, giggle!! Kong treat is a good idea. And yes, we have boarded him before. We went to Italy last April and put him in. He was there for 6 days. My stepson, who was dogsitting the other dog, got him out a day early for us and brought him home. Well, he peed and pooped all over the house- yucky loose poop! For 3 days. Even when we came home he would just lift his leg on the furniture. I had to retrain him. LUckily, he snapped out of it but he wasn't right for at least a week. That is why I am not sure about the boarding. One night, fine but 3 entire days and nights. I don't know. I think we're gonna go with the drugs. Kind of ironic if you've read my other thread here. :) OH, and my goal for 2006 is to hire an animal behaviourist and train this crap out of him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (945 posts) at 12:58 PM
Don't hire a behavioralist to train it out of him themselves, hire one to help YOU train it out of him.
Half of the dog training out there won't work, unless YOU do it. The dog may change for a dog trainer, but it's a whole new ball of wax when you get him home.
PM your issues and I'll see if I have any suggestions. I have some great experience with odd dog behaviors.

I'll render my opinion....just keep in mind....I am not a pet owner.
The sedatives....I don't know.....would you give them to your children just because company was coming over?
If he is in the garage and in the cage....wait....the GARAGE? Isn't it too cold for that? Okay, not the issue....I know.
I would side on the boarding over the sedatives, however....it sounds like you made your decision.
Have you ever used the sedatives though? Is there any fear of a bad reaction to them?

My next door neighbor is our Veteranarian and SHE has a hyper dog and she DOES use tranquilizers when she has a lot of people over, as well as something like a kong to keep him occupied.
I've seen Chip (a lab) on them and he is fine. Just more mellow than usual and definitely happy. If the vet uses 'em on her dog then its good enough for me.
Our dogs are crate/kennel/cage trained also and it is like their own safe little house. I would keep him home with the crate, drugs, and distraction.
I agree with Supafreak about getting someone to train you to train your dog. Thats how we have done it.
The MOnks of New Skete have wriiten a few excellent books on dog training. they are a monastery in NY that breeds and trains German Shephards to support themselves. They have done it since the 60's I think and they are amazing. They look at dog training from the standpoint of understanding pack behavior- which sounds like taht would help you understand your dog's territorial behavior. There is one about puppy training and another called "how to be your dog's best friend" CHeck them out! Meg

I agree with Supafreak on both counts -- the pb-filled kong in the crate with him, and getting a trainer to teach YOU to train your dogs. Mine gets super hyper and jumps all over people when they come to the house... unless I give him a kong filled with treats and peanut butter. Then, he doesn't care who is at the door, people could be stealing our stuff and beating me up, and he'd be happily absorbed in his kong. And then he'd be all tuckered out from trying to suck all that peanut butter out of there!
I bet you can do it without drugs. :)

I debated about posting this, but I've decided I would like some more opinions, and I know a lot of you on this site LOVE to share opinions. *wink*
Here's the dilemma: A coworker is continually receiving charity donations in all forms from the employer due to various reasons throughout the last few years. Last week the coworker had to undergo an outpatient surgery which will require missing an undetermined amount of days from work. Now the coworker is asking the entire staff, which is 100s of people, to donate vacation time so as to continue to receive full paychecks. The coworker has absolutely no vacation/sick etc. time left because those have already been used up for vacations, etc., never to accumulate and roll over from year to year.
My problem with this is that it seems to be an ongoing cyclical type of issue, not one of those "emergency" situations I would have no problem helping with. The coworker never thinks to save up some of his vacation/sick hours "just in case" and seems to make unwise financial decisions. I am starting to feel taken advantage of.
Would you donate hours anyway because of office politics, or would you hold to the principle of some tough love?
Body for Life Forum Message by crone (393 posts) at 12:09 PM
No I would not give up my time. It's mine and I earned it. I end up taking almost the entire month of Dec. off because I sacred something may happen and I never use my sick or vacation time. At my job we are able to get next years sick & vacation advanced to us if the need arises. Why can't your company do the same thing?
Body for Life Forum Message by Jame (9 posts) at 12:12 PM
i wouldn't give up my time either... maybe for a unique situation where a group of co-workers decided to do it, i might... but if someone blatantly asks... well, that's just kinda rude!
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (316 posts) at 12:13 PM
i would not either.... if it was a situation that motivated me to feel like it i certainly would, but you have reservations about it-trust your gut feelings. those are your days because you have been wise to save em up. maybe I"M a scrooge, but thats my .02.
Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (214 posts) at 12:13 PM
I'm with ya, Wendy. I have no trouble giving to people in emergency situations, but this doesn't sound like that; it sounds like bad planning on your coworker's part. And that, in and of itself, is forgivable and even something I might feel inspired to help out with if the person in need acknowledged they messed up. Everyone does. But the fact that it seems to be a habit indicates they are just clueless. I don't usually feel inspired to bail people out in those cases.
Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (196 posts) at 12:15 PM
No, you are not being a scrooge. I would say it depends on the level of politics and how it will affect your job. It is sad that this co-worker is seeming to take advantage of the donated leave policy. I would probably not donate, stating I need it for my planned vacation or future unknown problem. If I noticed a frown or something on the part of my boss or higher that indicated to me I was not "being a team player" and if I beleived a raise or promotion would be affected, I would donate the bare minimum amount. Hope this helps.
Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (284 posts) at 12:15 PM
I should add to clarify that the coworker went to the direct supervisor for help within the department, and the supervisor pushed the request memo on up to the entire organization.

I'm on your side Wendy! I may help out the first time, but I'd start to get upset as it kept going. Espcially if this person uses up there vacation days for non-illness related things. I agree that they should plan ahead. After all if this is a recussing thing like it appears to be the person should know they're goign to need to extra vacation days and should save them.
I understand the office politics thing, but as you can probably tell about me, I've never really been the type to succumb to peer pressure. I thrive on adversity, but I feel for you.
Have you made a decision yet?
Body for Life Forum Message by nola (20 posts) at 12:35 PM
Tough love. I can understand doing it in an extreme situation, such as someone having cancer or a very, very ill child, but in this case it seems a bit much to ask. I have worked with people like that as well, who always seem to have some sort of big problem and who expect a lot of *help* from everyone. I've had to take unpaid days off of work but never thought to ask someone else to give me their vacation time. That seems like something OTHER people would decide to donate to you, not something you ASK for.
What are other people at your office saying about this? I would think that quite a few people would be bothered by it. I think it is perfectly reasonable to state the you are saving your vacation days in case YOU have an emergency.
Body for Life Forum Message by 3D (48 posts) at 12:41 PM

Wow this is really a management issue, I too have problems with animosity building towards coworkers who 'work' the system, while the rest of us slave away. Last year, a co-worker of mine's daughter passed away unexpectedly, we were all overwhelmed and willing to give up all we the sick/vacation time we had so that she could be with her family during the crisis. In this scenario, I would NOT offer up my time.

Wendy, I don't know if you have a family of your own or not but if you do then your first priority is them, NOT a co-worker. You need to save the time for you and them. If this is an elected surgery then by all means you have NO obligation. Although you shouldn't have an obligation even if it's an emergency. What you do with your vacation is your choice because you have earned it!! Good luck and definatly stand your ground. If not for yourself do it for your family!

Interesting opinions here.
When you give a gift....you give it regardless of the circumstances. Not because of coersion (did I spell that right ;) If you WANT to give up your time, then give it. If you have reservations about it, then don't.
We are asked all the time to donate various things at my workplace. I just don't give unless I feel the need or want to do it. I don't care if management is pset with this....it isn't money out of their pocket. And vacation time IS money out of your pocket.
If you want hand over a days worth of pay or weeks (whatever) then don't hand over your vacation time.
Do want you feel is right for you and be done with it.
Good luck.

I'd say, don't contribute if you don't want to. If you get slack about it, call a lawyer. :)

Look at it this way Wendy...you'll be giving up some of your Tennessee trip Days!! ARRGGHHH!!!! Ya know ya cant do that Girly..so pass on it.
Seriously, I had to deal with the exact same situation at the jail for 10 years and it was always the same 2 or 3 people asking for the time off. (After burning up all of their own time for fun days and just "because".) I refused to give it up...and Im glad your passing on this guy.
Guess we can be scrooges together :)

I am actually very surprised that the higher ups are even suggesting this to other workers! I think it is ridiculous to ask this of you. It would be a different situation if you offered it because they are a friend, etc., but to be asked to do this is just completely out of line in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I am all for helping others - so much so that sometimes my husband gets a little po'd - but if this is a recurring theme, this person needs to find help in other ways and not continually rely on the support of the co-workers.
Body for Life Forum Message by Kathcandu (186 posts) at 03:37 PM
It's strange that the company would disseminate the memo, rather than allowing the employee to borrow vacation time from the upcoming year.
Do you all not have short-term disability? There usually is only a two-week period until it kicks in, although they might not get paid for longer. Still, they would at least get some portion, and maybe not everyone would have to donate.
When would they say they had enough? If everyone of the 100's donated, how would they determine whose time to use? Someone might not get better so quick if he knew he had someone else's time to play with.
I am all about taking care of our co-workers in dire times of need. This doesn't sound like one of those.
I never understood vacation sharing anyway. I mean, in a rare emergency, yes. However, I am compensated differently than anyone else. So if I gave my free day to someone who makes less than I do, then the company makes money off my generosity. This sounds like it could be your situation too.
Of course there are the people who may contribute that make less than that person, but it just doesn't seem right they even put co-workers in this position.
This is a tough one. Maybe you could suggest lending your days. That way, he would have to credit back once his bank was full again?
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (175 posts) at 04:10 PM
I don't think you are a scrooge, I wouldn't give any days if I were you. You worked hard for them and earned them. Maybe if it was the first time and didn't seem like an occurance. Don't worry about what others say or think unless it is going to have a negative impact on your job. You have to do what you feel is right.
Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (314 posts) at 04:43 PM
I would not give up your time and I would not feel guilty about it. I can't believe a company would allow this sort of vacation sharing policy. It sounds like a big employee relations nightmare to me. Employers have things like short term disability, sick days, FMLA and if needed long term disability to deal with these types of things. It should never become another employees' perceived obligation. What really needs to happen is the management has to manage this employees' time off more effectively and according to state and federal laws. It gets very technical at this point, so I won't go in to gory details, but it is your company's fault for letting this go on. I would just wonder if your company is doing this for every employee who's had a bout of bad luck, I highly doubt it. Keep your vacation for yourself and offer no excuses.
Body for Life Forum Message by annie1104 (265 posts) at 04:50 PM
We are not allowed to do that and I think this is exactly the reason why. I would not give up my time. It is something that I have earned and need. Your co-worker should plan for the unexpected just like everyone else.

This has NOTHING to do with Scroogeness. Trust me. I'm all about Christmas and holiday giving.
Here's my question- has that worker ever returned the borrowed time or donated time to others?
Body for Life Forum Message by Blondie26 (167 posts) at 01:18 PM
Ok, I donated money to Julie's site for her transplant. I got the BFL bracelet in the mail yesterday. I just sat on the bed crying as I looked at it. This bracelet was going to be a gift for someone. She is starting BFL. But I'm wearing it now. I don't want to give it up. When I look down I think of Julie. I will never ever forget her no matter what but I can't seem to let go of this bracelet.
I was having a rough morning thinking about her and I looked down and saw the words "Live It!" It made me smile. I was able to pick up and go with a smile.
Am I wrong for keeping it for myself?
God bless you Julie.

NO - not at all. I'm guessing but I think the bracelet means far more to you than the person who is just starting. Can you get another?
Body for Life Forum Message by healthyme (74 posts) at 01:26 PM
I don't think you're wrong. I think you need to keep it. It means a lot more now than just a nice gift to a friend. Really, you have no reason to feel bad about keeping it.

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (115 posts) at 01:27 PM
Honestly Julie if it helps you keep going then i would keep it. Your friend will be more encouraged by your example and excitement then by the bracelet. She will not share the same meaning that that bracelet has brought you so I would give her something else even if it's just your support. That will mean far more to her in the long run just as that bracelet means a lot to you because of the support Julie Whitt has given you. God bless you and I know you will make the right decision...like agent said, you can't go wrong here.

There are some things that friends, family or spouses just don't understand and it's nice to have a place to come to where others are on the same wavelength.
Of course, my wavelength is slightly off from everybody else's, but similar nonetheless! :-D
I've been seeking motivation to get things really going because I was off with a hurt back and have been worried about injuring it and feeling a bit down, but you have all lifted my spirits and now I'm excited again!

Would you say that one needs to cut the recipes in half if your intention is weight loss? I just bought 4 books, one for me and 3 gifts. I don't want my pals to be discouraged if I've just handed them recipes that they can't enjoy if they want to lose weight.
Is it more than just cutting down the portions? Some things just not BFL approved in the recipes? I bought them the journals, the BFL book and the EFL book for Christmas. Now I'm worried that I am going to mess with their minds.
Body for Life Forum Message by healthyme (74 posts) at 10:09 AM
This morning was the first time in my life that I poured my Kashi Go Lean into the bowl without using a measuring cup! It seems like my entire life I have weighed and measured everything I put in my mouth. Even when I binge I know exactly how many calories I've had.
I actually think that all of this calorie counting has done me more harm than good. I would add things in which were not part of my meal plan and then cut back on my next meal, which would then maybe trigger feelings of deprivation and then a binge would follow. I could literally spend hours on my calculator tallying weekly totals, monthly totals etc. Yes I have a problem! I would also continually search for that 'perfect' number, but my plan would change daily because of all of the differing opinions out there.
As from today I decided to take a huge leap of faith and follow the plan using portions and not calories. If I eat the right foods in the right portions I can NOT go wrong. One meal at a time I am building my BODY FOR LIFE!!!
Thanks for listening :)

I've been experimenting with those 6 egg whites and 1/2 cup of oats. I have found that you do not need the 1/2 tsp. pancake mix. Doesn't really add much. The key is to blend the 6 egg whites with the 1/2 cup of oats till really smooth. Then I add lemon and orange zest. Zest adds so much flavor. I throw a strawberry or two in there or maybe one section of orange. I fry it up in an omlete pan as one giant pancake. You do not need jam or sugar free anything to make this tasty. The zest makes it have nice fruity flavor. Enjoy.
And the best thing about this...My kids love them. No syrup, no jam, no junk. I get 6 egg whites in their bodies to start the day. Yay!
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (853 posts) at 11:36 AM

This was an e-mail I received from my mom! I swear it is so flippin funny but oooohhhhh so true LMAO enjoy all my fitness friends!
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet
table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots,
leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.
2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt
scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You
can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that
it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn
into an eggnog-aholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for
me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!
3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of
gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your
mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or
whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car
with an automatic transmission.
5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control
your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other
people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New
Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This
is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet
table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like
frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself
near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the
center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave
them behind, you're never going to see them again.
8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or,
if you don't like mincemeat, have two slices of apple and one pumpkin.
Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert?
Labor Day?
9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the
mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some
standards.
10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party
or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention.
11. Reread above tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the
corner.
Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the
grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well
preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand,
martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and
screamim~ "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Sumo squats are pretty effective. Place your feet about shoulder width apart.Take a set of dumbbells and hold them in the up and down position, grasping the plate, not the bar. Keeping back straight and looking forward squat down until the dumbbell bar hits the ground, hold for a sec and come back up to position.
Body for Life Forum Message by iceskater (311 posts) at 10:03 AM
You can sit on a bench with a large/heavy dumbbell fitted tightly between your feet, lean back (but not too far) and extend your feet towards the ceiling. Not only does it work your quads but your back and lower abs, too. Hope this helps!

And best of all *drumroll* I NAILED the stuffing out of my nutrition yesterday!
Yeeeeeeeehawww!.
I work holiday retail and since Friday it's been insane. No lunch breaks, and my timing was getting blown to heck and back. So I missed meals, then overate next meal. After tweaking all weekend, trying to come up with a solution that worked, I ended up going with a "lunch" style breakfast, two MRBs and a shake.
The bars did it. I apparently needed something easier to nibble on as I walked back and forth on Ye Olde Sales floor. I could jam the bar into my pocket and voila!
Guys, remember you don't have to be perfect. You just have to learn to overcome resistance.
Afterall, that's what weightlifting is all about right?

Julie is there, on my shoulder, pushing me. How could I ever have an excuse to not exercise after she has pushed herself so far?? Thanks, again!

No excuses. No reasons. No workouts. :( Took a 1 week break between challenges and now it's 2 1/2 weeks later. Don't know why.

first time i heard of julie was thru another tracker member who is also an australian champion
when the BFL champions were announced I saw the lists, and read about most of the champions, Mariah Yu and Michelle lee and Rena Reece stood out... I remember just skimming thru the inspirational champion, until Kerry who is a tracker member alerted me to her profile.
she said she was alerted because she was curious about the plug in her chest.. I remember saying "what plug?". All she said was.. Here is a link to Julie's profile.. have some tissues ready and read.
Boy was she right.. I was amazed at reading her story, and wrote to Julie straight away. Since that first time, Julie and I emailed each other a few times, She was very keen to have her story heard in Australia, so I did a mini interview with her and posted her pictures and story on my website and sent a link to everyone on my database, about 400 people.
It wasnt long before a lot of BFL'ers in Australia got to hear about Julie's story. I feel honoured and blessed that I made a connection with Julie in the short time that I have known her.
yesterday, I grieved a lot for an amazing woman. Today, I rejoiced in her life, and I am grateful for the inspiration that she will provide me as I start my next challenge in her memory. Julie has given me a wonderful gift.. in fact, to all of us about to dedicate our 2006 challenge to her
Anyone else care to share ?

I first heard about Julie when I saw her on the BFL website as an inspirational champion and I could see from the write-up that she had done multiple BFL challenges. But I had absolutely no idea of the life challenges she was facing throughout them until I came onto tracker a few months ago and learned so much more about her.
The way she lived her life was a true inspiration and I know that her amazing strength and spirit will continue to inspire everyone who know her and all those yet to hear her story.

I first learned of Julie through the BFL site. She hadn’t been named 2004 Inspirational Champion yet, but she had won one of the “jumpstart” awards. I saw her again when they posted the 2004 Champions and thought she was so adorable in the surprise photos with Porter… and so teeny, tiny. But I didn’t learn the details of her story until I found tracker and read her story on the Current Profile of the Month. Wow. It really touched my heart. Then I’d see her post to the BFL Insider’s Blog at bfl.com and somehow I found her personal blog site. I read through the entire thing, going all the way back to March 2005 and was just amazed with this woman. Through her writing, I came to “know” her sense of humor, her incredible love for her family and her faith, her goals, her triumphs, her setbacks, and of course, the details of her pending double lung transplant. I reread her entire blog yesterday morning before my workout and wept for this lovely woman that I’d never met, but feel like I know so well.
One adorable thing I noticed about Julie is when she poses for photos (whether BFL progress photos or random photos), she does this cute thing where she bends one knee and lifts one heel (I think it’s usually her left leg). Have any of you ever noticed that? Go through her blog and look through her photos – you’ll see it. I say we all post a “Julie pose” to our progress photos during our Julie Challenge.

Dana, as a fuzzy child parent you have my thoughts and prayers. Nimitz and Tico send along purrs and scritches as well. So long as Rocky promises not to chase them around the animal hospital.
There's nothing in the world more pathetic looking that a sick child, either fuzzy or not.

One of the many things I've learned from Julie, is to never stereotype someone belonging to a church called "Primitive Baptist." I know nothing about the primitive baptist faith, but I never would've guessed that someone of that faith would say "get your freak on" or quote the Austin Powers movies and Office Space...
Indeed, what a great spirit.

Linda, thanks for that post. I too tried when I read those words that dear dear julie pasted away. I cried all the way home on Monday. When I got into my car after hearing the news. Garth Brooks song came on the radio. I think the name of it is When we dance.
I almost had to pull the car over.
I learned from JULIE that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. and always believe in yourself. Life is short and live it to the fullest.
Thank you Julie for all that you gave us.

I think I cried all afternoon Monday and then part of Tuesday. I just wish for one moment that Julie could have danced with Matt. However God had plans for her life. She is one of the biggest inspirations I have ever known. How can we NOT better our lives because of her. Thank you God for giving us all the opportunity to know her! Even if it was for a short time, I will forever be changed!!
Thank you Linda for the post!

Hi everyone! Please forgive me for the length of this post!
I attempted this challenge back in March of 05 (i believe it was). Just having a baby in dec 04 by cesearean, it left me flabby!! I had a hard time adjusting to my new life, let alone a new workout....well, long story short, I lurked here for a few days, weeks, and so on, without ever saying goodbye to anyone! I was sooo ashamed and just couldnt face anyone on here. I hope you all remember me!
I heard about Julie, how sad. She will be sooo missed by everyone, even myself, only knowing her from this site.
Does anyone know what happened to Tracy Jeffries and ChubbyMcChubbs on this site? (self removed???) I noticed they were no longer on here. Thanks for any updates!
I will be starting my new program on Monday January 2, 2006 & I cant wait! (With my family & in-laws at Christmas time, I will be doomed for failure if I start now!!)
I will post new pictures (before) and get rid of the last ones. New year, new me! Wish me luck and I will be on here frequently for support. You all rock!

I spoke to Tracy Jeffries on the phone the other day. She is doing well and busy getting ready for Christmas with her family. She wants to come back to Tracker after the holidays. She said she may create a new profile with pix in order to take her fitness "to a new level".
Chubby McChubbs removed herself several months ago when Tracker started going downhill (opinions of some, myself included). She blogs though. You can catch a link thru J-Dubs blog, I think!
Several of us are doing the MsFit Meltdown in conjunction with our BFL Challenge starting on Jan 2. I will be reviving a thread about it today. I just have to find the thread in my archives.
Welcome Back!!!
Stef :-)
