A friend of mine recently told me that her nutritionist recommended these because they have lots of vitamins and they are organic. Does anyone know if these are BFL friendly?
Body for Life Forum Message by justdoit (234 posts) at 09:17 AM
I have never heard of them. What are they?
Body for Life Forum Message by pk-rn (17 posts) at 10:01 AM
They are nutrition bars. My friend eats six small meals a day and uses these when she is on the go. They have flax seed, protien, carbs, etc.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (809 posts) at 10:10 AM
I would not recomend any bar of any type. They are full of sugar and/or sugar alcohols. They are basically a glorified candy bar.
If you need something to eat when you are on the go, I would buy some ready to drink myoplex shakes and take them with you. You can keep them cold with an ice pack in the car.
Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (171 posts) at 10:15 AM
I agree with Chuck, they are loaded with sugar. So regardless of how good the other ingredients are, the sugar content alone should keep you away. If you need something in a pinch, try having an apple and string cheese or egg whites (microvawe for 3 min) and a SF yogurt. Or carry some almonds and an apple in your bag till you can get a real meal in you. Good Luck :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Hkrchic (5 posts) at 05:07 PM
I love clif bars.....but for when I am doing excessive activity! I used them to hike the Grand Canyon when I needed that kind of energy. They do not have much protein and have high sugar so I would not recommend them for BFL.
Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (138 posts) at 06:32 PM
Cliff Bars are designed more for endurance events, not so much muscle building.
I'm not of the School of Bars are Evil. There are times and jobs where shakes are just not practical. Retail sales during Christmas come to mind. ;)
Read the lable, you want between 200-280 calories. This should be a meal. Look for a 40-40-20 balance. You don't want to eat these consistantly. They typically have more fat than is ideal.
I like the Myoplex bars best.

I am sick to death of chicken. I am going to start my challenge back up in a week and hopefully will have some newer recipes. I need to use my EFL cookbook more. I am hating my meals.
Problem: I don't like fish/seafood, my proteins usually all I use is chicken and cottage cheese. I need to find more foods that I like. I see people talking about good recipes, I guess I need to get into that more. I t will be easier next week when I start back on days too. Working evenings is hell on a diet.

Pork Tenderloin is an excellent choice. Its very lean at 3g of fat per 4oz which ranks right up there with chicken.
Body for Life Forum Message by Coco (499 posts) at 06:44 PM
buffalo and lean ground beef are good options too.

Don't forget Turkey breast! And you can always throw in some low-fat ham.

You could also try reduced-fat string cheese. I use that a lot since I don't/can't eat cottage cheese.
I also have a BFL RTD shake or bar once a day.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1085 posts) at 10:03 PM
I tried that too, cheese is another thing I can't eat unless it's melted on pizza. lOL
the only way I eat Cottage Cheese is with fruit and splenda.

Can't stop myself. On cardio days, I will do the HIIT for 30 minutes on the treadmill, then 10 on the bike and 10 on the elliptical, telling myself that I have to do other machines... On weight training days, what started out as a 10 minute warm up, and 10 minute cool down just to keep things circulating has become 20 minute warmup and 20 minute cool down.
My husband says I need to go back to sticking with the program. But now I am scared what will happen if I stop....
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (919 posts) at 10:37 PM
If your gonna do extra cardio don't do it on HIIT days. This is when your most likely to burn up muscle (esp. if you are doing this in a fasted state). If you like to do extra cardio and it makes you feel good then just do low intensity cardio. You have less of a chance of burning up your muscle at an steep incline "walk" than heart pounding, back breaking cardio. Don't deprive your needs if it feels good and is not making you crazy. Just be smart about how you do it so you don't become over-trained or burning up muscle. Extra cardio is not a bad thing.... unless your pushing the limit each time you do it. Hope this helps! ;-)

perhaps a good idea if you are asking for a fortune from complete strangers would be posting the company information for this company in Japan and Ireland.
Website, phone numbers, addresses etc.
Asking people to lend that much money requires proof. I would ask for proof even if a friend was asking me for it. Perhaps you should post that information.

Another vote to keep going! Last year I finished my first challenge... I had some major screw ups here and there, but I just kept going and kept trying and lo and behold, after 12 weeks I had made great progress! After that I got into the bad habit of trying to restart my challenges after screwing up... well, it led to 8 months without a solid commitment to the program and reversing all the progress I made. Just keep going and keep building the healthy habits!! Erin

Keep going. While the holidays have to be the toughest time to be doing a challenge, there probably isn't a period of 3 months in the year that doesn't have a party, a wedding, a funeral, an illness, an injury, a bbq, a birthday, an anniversary, a vacation or some unexpected stress. The point is "for life". No 3 month period is going to be a clear open road for staying on track. the success adds up too, even with a blip in the month. You will feel and see 8 weeks of success even with a bad week in there. Think ahead to your 8 week body and go for it!

Felt great to feel the muscles working again this morning and to be sweating. I was surprised to find the measurements where the same except for around the bellybutton which had gone up and inch.
I had gotten 4 pairs of size 4/6 pants for Christmas and let me say that's a big motivator to keep on track. lol

I had done really good over Thanksgiving, but not so disciplined over Christmas. I will be restarting January 2, but will be out of town (in the woods) for a week before then. I would like to do the "hell diet" (I think that is what it is called - the chicken/broccoli thing) for the few days before I hit the gym again on the 2nd. I can't seem to find the thread that posted that a while back. Does anyone remember it? Thanks so much, and looking forward to a successful 2006.

i saved this from another post, hope this is what your looking for.
Just want to share.....the hell diet revisited
The last few weeks I found myself at somewhat of a plateau and so after reading some posts about the infamous "hell diet" I decided to tweek my eating a little. The first thing I did was remove all bread, pasta and potato as carbs and replaced them with oatmeal, fruit and sweet potato. This helped get me down about 2.5lbs and then I came across this diet which I followed for 4 1/2 days:
RAPID FAT BURNING – Follow for 1 week.
Meal #1 4 oz. turkey breast 3 egg whites ½ Grapefruit or ½ cup omelet vegetables 2 Flax Oil Capsules
Meal #2 Protein Drink: 2 scoops Muscle Provider (or other protein powder), 4 frozen strawberries or peach slices, 12 oz water
or
Whole Food Option: 3.5 oz (snack pack can) tuna and 1 tomato
Meal #3

Meal #4
(same as meal #2)
Meal #5

IMPORTANT – DO NOT SKIP – EAT ALL FOODS AS LISTED
Monday and Thursday: Substitute the following for your 5th meal at the end of the day:
¾ cup oatmeal (before cooking) or 3/4 cup cooked brown rice, 4 oz. sweet potato small banana 1 cup vegetables 1 TBS. butter
NO SUPPLEMENTS WITH THIS MEAL
I hope this all comes out right when I post it and you can see what the breakdown is.
Anyhow, thanks to Skwigg (Renee) who is the moderator of the BFL Women's group on Yahoo and I know a lot of you read her webpage and blog. She didn't create this diet, but posted it for us to see.
So, the great news is I followed for 4 1/2 days and lost almost 4 pounds. It wasn't that awful either, I really didn't feel hungry, but my HIIT suffered due to lack of carbs and energy, weights were okay. If you're looking for a kick start off a plateau, try this, it worked for me. I did switch Meal 4 with Meal 5 as I tend to get hungry before I go to bed.
Last night I had my free meal (and it was a doosie from Culvers (my fave) double burger, fries, hot fudge sundae) and now I'm back to no bread, pasta or potatoes, so I hope I keep the 4lbs off, we'll see.

Just curious -- anyone know what's up with the Mon/Thu Meal #5? It seems odd to have so many carbs with no protein, especially for the last meal.
Body for Life Forum Message by raindrop (22 posts) at 03:01 PM
BFL Beginner, thank you SO MUCH for your information. The diet I remembered was basically protein and lots of vegetables. Yours is very detailed and I appreciate this information. Luckily, the only cardio I will be doing is lots of walking (and the only weightlifting is a 243 rifle), so the lack of potatoes, etc. won't be a problem for these few days. I'll be sure to be back on the BFL eating program starting Tuesday the 2nd. If anyone remembers the "general" version of the Hell Diet, I would appreciate your comments as well. Thanks again everyone.

Hello, it was me who posted that. I think the carb meal is for energy. It did seem like a lot of carbs, I ate everything and felt really full, but still lost weight. It also gave me an incentive to make it to Thursday night, I wanted those carbs!! I wouldn't do this for any longer than 6 days, your body really does need them. Good luck!

Ok, I just Pmed Just Josh with this and it inspired me to tell everyone.
This is a New Year, a New Challenge, hopefully you will got to www.helpjuliewhitt.com and sign up for the TORCH Challenge starting Jan 2 to March 26th in Honor Of JULIE WHITT , I am!
Everyone is telling me I did wonderful in a years time, thank you all so much, I couldn't have done it without the support of all of you here on Tracker,
I was told that some people even show my pic to their friends to try to encourage and inspire them,
Now the part that isn't so Great, A lot of people give up before they even try, they just look at my pic, say WOW and then say I can't do that!
YES< YOU CAN! YOU CAN GET*HER*DONE!
I was fat for 9 years after a healthy 15 years of teaching Aerobics, I quit, got lazy, got fat, didn't like it , but oh well, that's life.
NO that isn't LIFE, that's not living to the best that you can be.
I was a junk a holic, I ate junk all day, I would eat at the all you can eat places, wanted my money's worth, then come home and eat Little Debbie cakes,
I'd eat 2 little debbie cakes at a time, I never met a cookie I didn't like. I was the orginial cookie moster. an open bag was an empty bag.
But one day I got so disgusted and depressed and it snapped, at 200lbs I said I have to do something, but nothing worked.
I found Body for Life and Whalla! I found my answer.
It wasn't easy, I cheated, I spipped ex days, but the more I followed the program the easier it got, It took the 1st whole 12 week challenge to realize that ex everyday wasn't that hard and eating right was enjoyable. The more results I saw the more it inspired me to continue.
and as I continued the more it became a lifestyle and not just another diet.
I planned, I planned alot, what I eat, when, what time, even why, I took my body as a work of art, like a nice machine that I had to take care of, I needed to fuel it, fuel it with what it needed, if I did alot of cardio, I need to replace it with carbs, alot of heavy wts, I need more protien, a reg rountine and I need both the carbs and protien. think about it, If you had a car you don't fuel her up with donuts, do you? she won't run.
BFL says, If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
So PLAN< PLAN< PLAN< if the plan doesn't go perfect, it's ok to scratch out and rewrite something, but rewrite it to contine to fuel your body with what it needs.
If you make a mistake, so what , learn from it and contine on, don't blow the rest of the day because of one stupid mistake.
Keep the journal, you will get used to it, I carry mime everywhere with me.
I plan, my day the night before, what to eat, when, what time, what exercises, how many wts will I use today,
at the bottom of each workout, I write,
awesome workout, Hiit my 10's
ok workout, could have done better, only hiit a 8 and why, didn't feel like it, or felt tired or dind't give myself enough time
This journel helps so much, you can look back at the end of the week and see, Oh no wonder I lost 2 more lbs, WOW< I busted my butt this week, or Oh no wonder I am tired, look at what I've been eating,
or no wonder I didn't loose any more in 2 weeks, look I've barely don't anythiing and been eating too much.
it's your tool, use it and make it work for you
STAY ocused and Stay Positive
Remember you are capable and worthy of being and doing anything and everything. You just need the discipline and the determaination to see it through.
It may not come to you instantely, and you may even back slide from time to time, but don't I SAID DON"T let that Detour you, NEVER GIVE UP!
Life is forever changing, therefore everyday is a new day and a new chance to begin bran NEW!
You may not be able to change everything you face, but you cannot change anything until you face it.
GOOD LUCK to all,
and Remember 2 things,
1. It's always to soon to quit, so don't quit too soon,
and 2. JUST GET*HER*DONE!!!
Love always,
your BFL friend,
Linda

This has 20 g protien but it is a frozen meal. Is this considered a no no for BFL clean eating?
Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (171 posts) at 05:25 PM
How many calories, carbs and sugars? Any dehyronated (sp?) oils? You jt want to keep a healthy ratio of protein to carbs, with minimal sugar and fiber is a plus.:) Some say 40/40/20, others do different ratios.

I LOVE that stuff. I don't eat meat, and it's just delicious! But I really don't know how "BFL" it is. I do know it's low in calories and high in protien. I think it's a little high in carbs but I don't remember for sure.

I think we have discussed this before awhile back and determined based on the calories, protein, fiber, and nutrients that is was BFL friendly.
Body for Life Forum Message by KatieFeld-mom (100 posts) at 08:47 PM
Here is the nutritional information from another site:
Serving Size: 9 oz.
Calories: 150
Fat: 1g
Carbs: 25g
Sugar: 6g
Fiber: 12g
Protein: 20g
It looks 'friendly' to me.

Being sick for Christmas sucks. Im writing this as I do my breathing treatment for asthma. I had to go to the hospital today because the medication I have been on is not strong enough. I have not been this bad for a long long time. The corticosteroids they give people with severe asthma problems are a bodybuilders worst nightmare. They are the opposite of anabolic steroids.
I really hope that I get well soon so that I can hit the gym soon. I know my strength will be way down because of all the steroid use and all of my inactivity this past week and comming week.
If this tread is hard to read, please forgive me. Im a little heavily medicated at the moment. :)

Ugh. I'm sick too, but as bad as I've been feeling for myself, your post put it in perspective... there's always someone with it a bit worse off. I've just got the doozy of all cough/colds. No hospital trip for me (although I'll be going to the doctor tomorrow as I'm afraid I've got strep or some other kind of infection.) I'm sorry you're feeling so yuck!! Not fun any time, but particularly bad at Christmas. Good luck when you get back to the gym. I had intended to start challenge 2 today but NO WAY was my body up to it. I can't make it up the stairs without wheezing and hacking today.

Yeah it really scares me when I get severe asthma attacks.
When I was about 12 I almost died. They took me to the hospital and had to be intubated in the PICU. They told my parents to call any family in because they really didnt think I was going to make it through the night.
I woke up the next day not knowing where I was and spent the next week in PICU but I survived. Ever since then I get really scared when I have major problems that the normal medication I have on hand does not work.
I hope everyone out there gets well soon. Best of health to you!

I am too! ;-( I swear I think I have found another great AB workout coughing all freaking night long and day now. I won't even attempt the gym right now or cardio or else I will have the asthma problem you speak of. I think I am gonna have to go to the doctor tomorrow as well. I can't take this crap anymore. I feel like crap and most of all I am sick of hack hack hacking away. I think I will just change my name to Hackarealla! I fell ya! This just sucks! Hope you feel better soon too!

Hello all! I am finally doing it....starting the BFL challenge today! I know that Jan. 2nd seems like a logical day, but I have been putting this off for 5 years so why wait another day to live life fully? What is different this time you may ask? I am commiting to a goal for myself and visualizing the outcome. Before, I was doing it for other people but a crazy couple of years of taking care of someone else has now left me alone. This is a huge opportunity to do something for myself! I found this forum and was happy to see great information and so much positive inspiration. Wish me luck!
Body for Life Forum Message by rbsamy (359 posts) at 11:38 AM
wooohoo. welcome. Congrats on making the choice to make the commitment. Make sure you have your goals developed and always refer back to them. BEst of luck toyou.

Good Day, all. Im Matt and Im starting tomorrow. My goals in my first challenge are to lose weight (ideally Id like to be around 175 or 180), gain lean muscle (Currently 21% body fat), and improve my fitness level. I will be running my first 1/2 marathon in April so my cardio will be a little different than what is prescribed.
Has anyone else trained for a distance run while doing the program? If so are there any changes to the diet that I should make or should I just go with what is described?
Thanks in Advance,
MATT

Well, week one is over and while I have to admit that my eating habits over Christmas break weren't as good as they could have been I did manage to drop off 4 pounds and keep it off over the weekend.
This week I am going to start walking more to build up to a serious aerobic workout in a couple of weeks. I am thinking about carrying bottles of water in my hands while walking to start working in weight training. Has anyone ever done this and if so have any suggestions for me?
Week 2 here I come. WoooooHooooo!
Body for Life Forum Message by KatieFeld-mom (100 posts) at 04:34 PM

Congrats on completing week one! You are on your way! I always have a water bottle with me (living in AZ it is needed!). I have been getting the 1 liter water bottles at stores and filling it up several times a day to make sure I get enough water. If you are running around alot and have a hard time carrying something with you, I recommend a camelback water carrier (or another brand) so you can carry both water and anything else you need. You can get these at mostsporting good stores.
