Teresa..great post. My goals for this Challenge (my 4th) are;
1) Lose 10 lbs (that probably sounds low, but I have been a really slow loser)
2) Lower BF% to between 22-24% and BMI 25 or lower.
3) Lose 1 inch off my thighs.
This Challenge is MINE and I am going to ROCK IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great advice TNT, I am also addicted to cardio and at the same time, I hate it the most. But I must do it to burn fat faster. What about taking betagen on empty stomach, every morning, before cardio? Will it help retain muscles?

Body for Life Forum Message by chefmikeyd (6 posts) at 09:40 AM
I have been working out every morning, first thing on an empty stomach. Is it ok if once in a while, I don't get my workout in until the afternoon or early evening, as long as I don't skip a workout? And if so, is it best to do your workout in as far after your last meal, and closest to the time of your next meal, to have as few carbs in your system to burn?
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (206 posts) at 10:00 AM
well you are going to get a bunch of responses with different takes on this. Here's mine. Like Bill Philips advocates, I think that you should definetly do cardio in the AM on an empty stomach. Weight training is optimal around early afternoon (12-3). On the other hand anytime is better than not at all so do it when you can. I believe and have experienced more fat loss with cardio in the morn on an empty stomach and I workout about an hour after a myoplex and have anothe myoplex right after my weight session. Wait about an hour after cardio to eat. Now if you are trying to gain muscle and not lose fate you may want to change that a little bit.
Body for Life Forum Message by chefmikeyd (6 posts) at 10:23 AM
Thanks for the info.... I will definitely always do cardio in the AM on an empty stomach.... I get better workouts later in the day than first thing in the morning anyway... My biggest goal is bodyfat loss so I will stick to that plan!! Thanks again!!

Hi everyone. I am getting ready to start my last semester of nursing school and on Tues. and Weds. I have to be at the hospital by 6:30 a.m. On top of a workout, I will not have time to be making much for breakfast. Does anyone have any real food ideas to eat on the run for breakfast? I'm not much of a shake girl but if there's a really good one out there with low sugar I'd be willing to try it. Thanks!
Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (181 posts) at 07:30 PM
1. an apple and 2 string cheeses
2. oatmeal w/ chocolate protein powder
3. 5 egg white heated in micro for 3 min and a SF yogurt w/ raw oatmeal sprinkeled in.
4. Cottage cheese and yogurt mixed together (this takes 1 min max to put together)
Hope this helps..good luck

Labrada Nutrition makes some really great shakes that are called Instant Breakfast shakes, and the flavors are cinnamon and oatmeal, blueberry and bananas and cream. They are really good, very nutritious, and fairly low in sugar. One problem--they are expensive. For women, half of one would probably do it, as they are fairly high in calories. I have had one for several years now every morning on weekends. They also make a pretty decent shake for the mid day meals too.

Right now I am focused on some other goals but have been thinking about maybe competing in the future....
I was wondering, for those of you, particularly women who do these things.... how do you decide whether to compete in figure vs. bodybuilding? I always thought BB competitors had to be BIG, but looking at some pics from various competitions I have noticed that some girls really aren't, particularly in the novice categories.
So how do you decide? Does it have anything to do with the body type you start with? How does the preparation differ?
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment....I am completely clueless (but intrigued).

Hi Phoenix!
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I just now saw your post! There is so much I could say but I'll keep it brief!
We are a Christian church (our official name is the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.) It has the same teachings and basic organization as the Church established by Jesus Christ in New Testament times. He restored his Church to the earth through a man named Joseph Smith in 1820. We believe that God leads His church and still speaks to men today and does this through a living Prophet named Gordon B. Hinckley.
Joseph Smith translated a book of scripture called the Book of Mormon. We believe the Bible to be the word of God, and we also believe the Book of Mormon is another witness that Jesus Christ really lived, that He was and is God’s Son. It contains the fullness of the gospel and supports and verifies the Bible.
Families are central to God's plan for us, and we believe we can be with our family forever.
As far as things we don't eat, we don't drink alcohol, coffee or tea (because of the caffeine) smoke, do drugs, that kind if thing. We also refrain from premarital sex because of the sanctity of marriage and families.
Traditions-wise, we are pretty much the same as most people, we celebrate Christmas, Easter and so on...
I hope I answered your questions! You can look on www.mormon.org if you want to read more. It pretty much can answer all of your questions!
I'd love to hear more about traditions, what others believe...different religions and cultures fascinate me...

Maybe I'm wierd, but when I think of South Africa, I think of Charlize Theron ;)
Seriously, I don't figure South Africa is that different from the US. I have always thought of it as a fairly western culture, despite it's locale. I understand there was unrest there in the past, but we have had similar unrest here in the US. As such, I have always thought of the two nations as being similar.
But I could be just wierd.

Bummer Miss Trim you cannot get it...have you tried emailing the company for a subscription? The extra issues are "extra", you have to buy them. The anniversary issue was the November issue. I find it inspiring to look at and have been reading it for years (all my copies are buried in my garage though...) I tend to look at the BFL website, Tracker and the BFL book the most though. I used to buy Muscle & Fitness Hers, and at first it was really good but kinda died down and now I think it's pretty much out of print. I bought the last one they put out a few months ago, but found that the articles they published were just rehashed old ones with different pictures. Oh well. Stick to Oxygen. Happy New Year everyone! Sometimes I feel like my only friends are my BFL peeps. So I’m gonna waste about 2 seconds to whine to you. I’m sorry, but I gotta do it.
I am So frustrated. Dating sucks. How does anyone ever get married?? I know this is completely off topic, but I am just so fed-up with dating, and boys, (one in particular...obviously) that I really wonder how anything ever lasts. Seriously. How do people do it?!?! Ok, I’m done now. I’m totally over it, him, whatever.
I know this post has nothing to do with BFL, really, but this situation is affecting every aspect of my life, including BFL and my workouts, lack of desire to eat, etc. I am just really sad right now...(but i will be starting another challenge on Monday, it’ll rock, i’ll get over him, blah, blah, blah...but tonight i’m gonna cry over it!)
How do you get over relationships?!? How do they possibly work out!?!? Am I going crazy?! Any advice?!?!
If no one responds, I totally understand. I should be in bed right now, like every other normal person , but...sleep is kinda hard to come by tonight...maybe i just need to vent...
Thanks for listening...

When you find the right relationship, it's absolutely magical. I know it sounds hokey and all that, but it's the absolute truth. However, when they end they end BAD.
The only thing that has ever seemed to heal the pain for me is time. I wish I could offer more advice, but that's the best I got. I sucked at relationships...it was a miracle that I met someone who would actually MARRY me. I still think she's a closet masochist though ;)

Oh Ash....I so know what you mean. Jim and I are learning how to date like normal adults. It's tough during the rough times but when things are good they are GREAT! So great it makes me stay. When we hit a few bumps I try to look at all the good and ask myself if the bad is so bad and so unmanagable that it's worth walking away. So far we are both realizing we are NOT perfect and we are working on our weaknesses. Im learning how to be me, and how to balance the important things in my life, God, church, work, Jim, and my own personal health (which ranges from eating heathly, exercising, manicures, pedicures, facials, and trips to the hair salon.) Those are all the things I love in my life right now and it's tough to balance everything. When you've been single for 36 years and cared for no one but yourself it's hard to learn change, but it's not impossible. So, I spend a lot of time in prayer asking God to give me wisdom.

Just try to immerse yourself in BFL, church, work, whatever and just tell yourself you DON"T want to get involved right now, thats what I did and about a month later I got hit by the "real" love train. It will happen when it is supposed to happen!! Hang in there, girlie, and get those workouts in to relieve some STRESS!

The pain of a breakup is excrutiating, overwhelming and you feel like you will never get past this. You start remembering all the good things. Sit down, and focus on the bad. Write lists of all the things you hated about him. Put all his pictures away and his things in a box and put it away!!! You are broken up because something wasn't working. Best "revenge" looking amazing! Get your butt to the gym and start kickin' ass! I'm going thru the same thing right now and I know where you are EXACTLY!!!! I even went to the bookstore for self help books it will soothe you when you can't sleep - it brings you back to the reality that he really wan't such a great guy.

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (262 posts) at 10:47 AM
There is a lot of great advice here. Love will find you, be true to yourself, don't define yourself by using another person, etc., etc. What I find has worked for me in this 2nd marriage of mine (1st was 3 yrs, 10 months, and 3 days, and this one is now 16 1/2 yrs, plus the 1 1/2 yrs of dating, courtship, & engagement, but who is counting :) ) is FLEXIBILITY. I am willing to overlook some things and my wife is too. You have to bend with what goes on in life, and not get into the mind set of temporary, throw-away, move on, etc. Too often people just do not want to struggle and want everything to be easy and smooth. HAH!! But, each person has their limits as to what they can put up with and I believe in today's society those limits are way too low. It is work to create a durable and understanding relationship but like what has been said, immerse yourself in you, go to church, etc, and look out!
Body for Life Forum Message by DTC2006 (3 posts) at 11:05 AM
I think everyone agrees that breaking up is tough. It is one of the hardest things to go through. Time really is the only thing that heals. It's already been said but focus now on you and occupy your time with anything you can (BFL is a great one). Hang in there.

Here's a bit of sad tale...not meant to gain sympathy just meant to tell you that it's not all bad and will get better. My fiance broke up with me at Christmas 1999. I rang in 2000 at a movie by myself. I thought I would never get over it and it actually did take me 2 years before I stopped thinking about him almost all the time. I haven't had a steady boyfriend since which bothers me sometimes but also I've gone back to school, started volunteering at a community theatre (even produced the last play) and am flourishing at my job. I am really, really finding out what kind of person I am and what my interests are as an individual, not as part of a couple. From the time I was 14 I pretty much had never been without a boyfriend or husband. But I'm finally starting to like the person that I am (still a work in progress) so I know that if or when I do start another relationship I can go into it with confidence and without being swallowed up by who that person is or who he wants me to be.
Does that make sense or did it just sound like rambling????

I took a course in LA on relationships and it was phenomenal and worth every single penny I spent and wish I had done it ten years ago. Since then I have browsed through various books in the relationship section of Chapters and nothing ever even comes close. It is a thorough one weekend course, one for women one for men, for thoe who want to have a successful relationship with a partner, and how to have a great relationship with you dad, mom, coworkers, ...very clearly laid out and you learn so much in a weekend. I highly recommend it, if interested Ashli or anyone else, PM me for information. Lots of people say they want to know how but don't actually persue being in such a course the same way many say they want fitness but do not really pursue it. I have to say though that BFL really embodies everything!

Ash....
My best advice is to not worry about it. I declared my self finished in the dating game after a few nasty breakups in a row, one of them being a 5 yr on/off relationship.
So then my hubby asked me to dinner.... and I thought.... what the hell, free food! LOL. And I went out with him several more times just because he was nice and fun to be with and I never had any intention of it becoming serious (he isn't even what I considered "my type") but it did andd 5 years later, here we are.
I really think it happens when its supposed to. While you're waiting, enjoy being single! :) Kelli

Thank you for all the great advice. I think I may take a lil' time off from the dating game and just focus on me! I like your idea, Jamber, of immersing myself in BFL, church, school...because that is really what i should be focusing on right now anyway, not some silly guy.
I know I just need a little time to get over it. You are all totally right! I think I instinctively knew all of this - I just needed to hear it from someone else! So Thanks for listening to my whine!

Boy Ash, I know how badly you are feeling right now and I hurt for you! When my marriage broke up for reasons I won't go into here, I never thought I would survive. I spent soooo many nights sitting alone on my bed, praying and crying my eyes out. Then I realized that there were a lot of things worse than being alone. I became very active in my church and one morning a guy came up to me and introduced himself. That was almost three years ago. We've been married for 1 1/2 years (and very happily). He's blown away by this BFL thing. Says he has his own Playboy bunny now! hehe. Do what PumpedUp said and make a lsit of all the bad. That was the best advice someone gave me. I still have the list!!! just in case I ever start thinking he was really a nice guy.
Have a good cry and then move on.

Ashli,
I'll tell you what worked for me. It happened after a number of losers and bad relationship and when the last of them went away for good that time, I decided I would be my own rebound relationship, I was going to date myself. And I really focused on what I wanted to do and be, not what someone else wanted me to do or be, or worse what I thought it was they wanted. I didn't date anyone for a year, I worked out all time (I like doing that - just hate eating right!), I focused on my rock climbing, got to be really, really good, had a blast with my friends, made even more friends and my life was as close to perfect as it had ever been. I liked myself, I was in the best shape of my life and I was happy. Then the joking happened that I should date someone just so that I could remember how it was done, just one date. I got hooked up on an online dating site, talked to a bunch of losers, which made me feel better about my situation. I then "met" and started emailing with this guy who I had a lot in common with and agreed to meet him for a date. He was cute and nice and I had a good time. But I didn't want a boyfriend so after that night I was done, my life was good, no screwing up everything for a boy. Only this boy was persistent and kept asking me out, I finally caved and agreed to one more date, then another and another and this year we'll celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary.
I fully believe I never would have found "The One" if I didn't find myself first and I still think that that one year was one of the best I've ever spent. The payoff was priceless!
I don't know you or your situation, so I don't want to be telling you that you're a marshmellow like I was . . . just if any of it sounds like it might work for you - do it, it's worth it!
Laurie

Starting Jan. 1, Companies Must Add Listings
For Trans Fats, Allergens; Revisiting Serving Sizes
The food label is getting supersized.
With the arrival of the new year, a host of additions and changes are in store for food labels. The presence of eight major allergens and the amount of trans fat in a product will have to be disclosed on labels as of Jan. 1. But that's just the start.
Among the other changes on the horizon, the Food and Drug Administration, which oversees most food labels, is considering giving calories more prominence on the food label -- by increasing the type size of the calorie listing, for example -- and requiring that nutrition information be spelled out for an entire package, not just for "servings." Already, Kraft Foods Inc. and Coca-Cola Co. are labeling nutrient information in dual columns on some packages-one side for the serving and the other for the whole bottle or box. A 20-ounce lime-flavored Coke now says that it has 26 grams of sugar based on the "standard serving," but 65 grams in the whole bottle. Also in 2006, the FDA will likely update dietary intake references for nutrients like vitamins to reflect new scientific reports from the National Academy of Sciences.

Well the voting is all over on the BFL website, so I guess we've done all we can for our favourites and have to wait and see what the judges decide for the number one spot.
Congrats to our tracker buddies Cheryl, Nicole, and Aaron for getting to the top 6 and thank you for inspiring us with your awesome transformations, your amazing stories, and your motivating blogs!
You guys are absolute champs!!! I so wish I could make it to Denver to meet you all !!

WAHOO!!! I went to the doctor today at 4pm and they confirmed it...I'm definitely pregnant....the only problem, we can't determine the due date! HA! They took a blood test and next Thursday they will be able to tell me what my "possible" due date is.
I can now finally start doing cardio again! My goal is to gain no more then 20 to 25 lbs during this pregnancy. The first one, I gained over 50 lbs and this resulted to a few complications such as high blood pressure and hard labor. Hopefully my healthy lifestyle will allow for me to have a better pregnancy all around :-)
I'll keep all of you posted and although somedays I'll feel fat *lol*, I'll still be here motivating everyone and offering my support.
WISHING EVERYONE A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I love talking about this stuff. With my first I gained about 90 lbs!!!!!!! No joke. A week or 2 before I delivered the doctor readily told me that my weight gain was just that - WEIGHT GAIN - YOU HAVE NO WATER GAIN TRACEY!!!! The second I gained about 35 lbs and alot of water weight - go figure. I have a feeling you're gonna do just fine Carole!!!

Simple way to get an estimate for a date.. take your last menstral cycle start add 2 weeks and subtract 3 months.. So say Nov. 15th. is the last cycle start date.. then roughly august 30th would be close to the due date plus or minus 2 weeks.... that is the general easy way to guess.. there are more advanced ways blood chem HcG..etc etc. but this one gets you in a ball park..hope it helps JB

We're thinking about a second, too -- probably start trying in a few months (or rather, stop NOT trying).
Are you going to document your pregnancy like you would BFL challenge -- updated pics, stats? I was thinking of doing that -- be the first to show folks what pregnancy and BFL are really like together (adjusting, of course, diet and exercises).
Anyway -- an idea I was tossing around, feel free to take it! :-)

I agree with Supa K... you should post pics. I am SO glad to hear that someone who achieved a low body fat percentage is able to get pregnant.... I was worried about BFL effecting my chances of having another child.
When I was pregnant with Reagan I had my husband take my pic every month... I have a cool scrapbook with entries and my pictures. I seriously think it helped keep me to the 30 lb weight gain. Plus it is neat to look through now that it I'm back to "normal" it's hard to believe I was ever pregnant!
Well good luck and congrats again! I am secretly jealous. :)

Anyone have a recommendation for a scale that also reads bf? I don't know how to measure bf and i thot it might be easier to buy a scale that can do it.
Let me know. Thanks
Body for Life Forum Message by rbsamy (376 posts) at 11:42 AM
Don't get a scale. Many people have said the same. for me.. It does not keep accurate numbers-much higher then other places and mine just went up as i lost weight despite all the lifting i was doing. I just got an Omron Body fat monitor for xmas. And many people use the navy site.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (456 posts) at 11:42 AM
I have the Tanita, but my recommendation is NOT to buy a scale that reads BF. It may be easier, but it's not as accurate as other measurements...and you're going to get awfully picky over those points when you're into your Challenge.
Skwigg has some good thoughts on it...let me see if I can locate them.
Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (456 posts) at 11:44 AM
Here it is: http://www.skwigg.com/id69.html
One more thing. Amy's right about the Navy site. I trusted that the most for my BF measurements. At some point, you just know what's right...and that site always came up with what I intuitively knew about my BF percentage.
Body for Life Forum Message by LittleBig (20 posts) at 11:50 AM
Thank people! I'll check into this!
Body for Life Forum Message by Gtnskinee (9 posts) at 04:12 PM
I agree, DON"T get a scale. I started the challenge Nov 28th and it said I had 32.5% BF. Almost 5 weeks later, it is still saying the same thing. I have dropped a clothes size and KNOW that the BF is down. I say pitch all the scales!!! :o) Also it's not consistent. You can weight three times in a row and it will vary up to 2% each time.

Anyone else out there a gourmet/natural foods enthusiast? I got EFL, hoping to get real recipes. I was disappointed to see that many are created using packaged goods. I guess that is quicker for most. But I want recipes with herbs, seasonings, fresh produce! I can't believe protein shakes are in there too. Geez, I was hoping to find GOURMET recipes. I am going through my own recipes right now, calculting cals, and protein, fat, carbs and trying to make adjustments to my favorites to get the best possible nutritional for the plan. I think each meal should taste like it came from the finest restaurant...regardless of the number of cals or fats.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (127 posts) at 08:07 PM
The idea behind the book was to make it so EVERYONE could use it, especially people who think they can't cook. There's nothing saying you can't substitute fresher/natural/more expensive ingredients for those in the book. For me, I like that it doesn't take long to make most of the stuff and I can substitute packaged stuff too. That's how I can make EFL work for me. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Wrecky (208 posts) at 08:13 PM
I really love the book. With my busy lifestyle I find it extremely helpful..I don't have time for "gourmet". Also..I tend to be a very simple eater.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (75 posts) at 08:13 PM
Yes, that is what it is, just a few examples of some really easy ways to put the protein and carb together. I wouldn't have expected a cookbook to have a roast beef sandwich in it, especially one without anything interesting in it. But it succeeds in giving concrete examples of combining the carb and protein.
If any of you are gourmet cooks...I'd love your BFL friendly recipes!
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (75 posts) at 08:15 PM
BTW Wrecky, gourmet does not always take more time. It is just about combining the right ingredients. Most of my favorites are not really that complicated.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (75 posts) at 08:19 PM
P.S. I ate VERY boring during my first challenge. I want to SPICE it up now and experiment with some of my family's favorite things. Where there is a will, there is a way. This is "for life" for me so I want to figure out how to eat the delicious foods I love.

Framed, you and I posted at the same time. You can add spices, etc., to liven up the taste. I do that all the time. We like things a bit hotter than the "average" American.
Anyway, I still love the book and I've got a ton of cook books.

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (75 posts) at 08:32 PM
Glad you like it. I have to say, it helps to have ANYTHING to help you switch it around a bit. I agree, I can add to many of the recipes. In the same way, I can clean up some of my favorites from other books. I think the key is to use as little oil/fat (the good kind only) and reduce the use of sugar. I am also using the websites with the nutritional to get the low down on all of my current recipes. Very time consuming, but once I know what we are dealing with, I can make substitutions so that the carb/protein/calorie count works for a BFL meal.
I am also disappointed that Bill did not put the calories, carb, fat, protein breakdown on his recipes. Many magazines now do that. It really helps.
Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (456 posts) at 08:37 PM
I know what you're saying, Framed. From time to time, I pick out a recipe from my South Beach Diet book to liven things up a bit. I never followed the Diet beyond 14 days, but I do refer to the second half of the book for recipe ideas. Not everything in there is suitable for BFL, and some recipes may need a slight adjustment, but it's been a good option for me. The recipes all have nutritional stats listed, so you can easily just plug them into FitDay.
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (197 posts) at 08:41 PM
In reality, the Eating for Life book ISN'T a cookbook! That's the problem--so many people think that's all it is, and then they start making the recipes without having read the book. Then, they realize down the road that the portions weren't right. Because they didn't read all the rest of the book. There's a lot of information in there in addition to the recipes. I have it, because it was given to me as a prize by EAS, but I wouldn't buy it. Not because it isn't a good cookbook. Just don't need it with the BFL book and an ability to create recipes of my own. Not to mention that it doesn't have the nutritional information in it. You have to go to the website to get that--pretty cheesy if you ask me.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (75 posts) at 08:45 PM
Mike, are you saying I can look up the nutritional on all of the recipes in the book? If so, that will help a lot.

I understand how you feel about the EFL book. I like to cook too and I don’t like to use pre-packaged foods too much either. I invite you to have a look at the recipes on this site www.kinetixliving.com. The website offers GREAT recipes that are painstakingly 40-40-20 balanced. Here’s the link directly to the recipe section: http://www.kinetixliving.com/webIQ/recipe.asp
It is a fitness and nutrition program started by two former BFL followers. Meagan Brunner is the front person but her husband (Jamie Brunner) is involved as well and he was a BFL Champion. They have taken many of the BFL principles and worked it into something of an easier program. The workouts don’t seem to be as intense as BFL but still follow on the same structure. They certainly have taken the nutrition way beyond. The food is great. The products are also 40-40-20 and just recently available in the States. (They taste great!)
There are many recipes that do not require “special” ingredients. There are some ingredients though, that are not easily found in the States as I have heard from some American message board users, like dry curd cottage cheese. To substitute for this you can just drain regular cottage cheese over a sieve in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.
Anyway, I hope you check out some recipes and maybe even try some. Who doesn’t want/need more variety that meets our sports nutrition needs?
Here are links to some that I have tried and really liked!
Mediterranean Meatballs & Rice
Grilled Steak and Vegetable Salad
Roasted Stuffed Chicken Breasts
If you have any questions about the recipes just PM me. I know sometimes it might call for white bread or regular pasta but that is totally calculated into the 40-40-20 ratio. You certainly could use whole wheat instead but you would probably be higher in carbs. It’s up to you how you would rather trade off.
I hope you have a look at the recipe website. I think they can work really well with the BFL program. I personally, follow the BFL program and use some of these recipes just to have variety and know that I am still on plan.

I personally like the book which, incidentally, I bought today because I exchanged a Christmas present and could only get store credit at a bookstrore. I realize the recipes are "quick and easy" but that suits my lifestyle. Anything is better than a cup of cottage cheese and a cup of yogurt!
However, I would be interested in any "gourmet" recipes anyone has because on occasion I do like to cook somehting really special! Maybe we should start a recipe thread. If we all shared our favorite that would be great! I am always looking for something new!
Body for Life Forum Message by Megan'sMom (229 posts) at 10:26 PM
Jennifer that's awesome info! Thanks!
I love to cook too. I wouldn't call mine gourment, but definitely fancier than your average casserole. I get a lot of ideas from Cooking Light magazine. Not all of them are BFL friendly and I usually can tweak them some more (i.e. brown rice for white, etc.) but it's a good place to check out too.

It is hard to get done in 42 minutes, especially iof you are in a gym and have to wait to use the equipment. Is this part of the issue? What I find my biggest problem is the actual lifting of the weight. Am I going too slow? When Bill Phillips came up with the 42 minutes, how fast did he do his reps? In my mind, that is the key so I just do my workout, try to stick to the 1 and 2 minute rest periods, and I get done when I get done.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (75 posts) at 07:59 PM
Some exercises take twice as long, especially for the lower body. IE I do my lunges, each leg for 12, 10, 8, 6, 12 and then do another exercise for each leg 12 times. So you are doubling the amount of time on that one leg exercise. Lower body has fewer parts to exercise tho so it should kind of even out. It is better to do your exercises very slowly than to hurry through them. Just watch the time between sets and move on after 1 minute. Chris's Audio timekeeper is nice. It is a tad fast on some of the legs for me, but overall a great way to keep it moving.
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (197 posts) at 08:59 PM
AUDIO TIMEKEEPER! As Framed says, it is "nice." It will also tell you exactly why you're taking so long. The workout will always be a bit longer if you're waiting the whole minute, but it shouldn't take over an hour. If you need to redeem those minutes that you burn doing one armed exercises, just do supersets on the small muscle exercises and you get them back. Go right from biceps curls to your tricep exercise without waiting at all, and back to biceps and back to triceps until you get through. That will get you back about 8 minutes. You can do the same thing with chest and back exercises. The chest rests while you're doing rows, and the back rests while you're doing presses.
Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (262 posts) at 10:33 AM
The person I go to for my "official" weigh-in and body fat %-age checks is a hard-core runner. In his mind, long steady runs are the ticket for losing weight. He also thinks the HIIT is good for strengthening your heart but that the weight-loss will not be as dramatic. And, he tells me everyone is different so what works for one person at 20 min. 3x week will not work for another who has to do 45 min. 6x week. He also believes BFL is good but the complete focus on level of intensity is wrong and people need to also keep in mind heart rate. So, there you have a runner's perspective, 3rd-hand. I would say find out what your true goal is (losing weight?) and then go for it by doing whatever you need to do to emphasize that aspect of your goal, while still following the BFL workouts, etc.
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (75 posts) at 07:28 PM
I have a similar situation. I am training for a marathon. I hate running...don't ask...I was pulled in by my siblings. I do the HIIT and find it to be the most exhilerating thing about BFL. I LOVE IT. It kills me. I do an easy run (10 minute miles) for an hour or so on my free day. I will increase the time as I go. I'll throw in some easy runs after my UBWO too...just to get some miles in. I think the interval training (I use the elevation and the speed) really helps you push past some comfy spot as a runner. They make my long runs seem like a walk in the park.
Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (262 posts) at 10:35 AM
I have been told and I have read the abs truly do not start showing up, like you see in the magazines pictures, until you hit about 6 - 8 % body fat.
So, there is a goal for you!! Keep doing your ab exercises and when you start getting to a low body fat they will be there!
Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (458 posts) at 10:44 AM
challenge 1----I did ab work 2-3 times per week.
challenge 2 (starts Monday)---I plan to do ab work every morning and alternate weight training w cardio every other day in the afternoons.
we'll see if it makes a difference.....because I'm working towards that 6 pak in this challenge

Saturday- 65 min Tae bo Advanced, Lower back and butt, triceps, and shoulders. (4 exercises each.)
Sunday is rest!
So what do you think?
Cals are around 1300 everyday.
Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (363 posts) at 12:47 PM
I LOVE TaeBo! Glad you're doing it IN ADDITION to your BFL prescribed workouts.... I put it in the category of "extra cardio" coz its not intense like HIIT. But its great for fun and burning extra calories. If your main goal is weight loss and you're not seeing it, push harder in your HIIT.... and maybe replace your walk breaks with slow jogging for active recovery. Also, to make tae bo harder i do the basic workout with those weighted hand bracelets on. I find the advance workout to be too fast to hold weights, but the basic one is perfect. Just make sure you execute the moves properly so u don't pull anything....
Hope this is helpful.

Arnold's book of "Modern Body Building" (not so modern anymore but it was when I bought it back in the 1980's...
Anyhow, I was complaing to my wife that my neck was killing me after my UBWO and she says "Are you sure your doing your exercises correctly", and I am like "But of course... " then I ran upstairs to review everything from my "library" including BFL and Arnold's book. Then there it was under the shoulder exercises... I was killing my trapezius (Sp) muscles with the two exercises I choose and not working my deltoids at all.
I can't do some of the exercises Bill suggests in BFL becuase I had major surgery on my shoulder 4 years ago and my surgeon forbids me to do an "full fulcrum shoulder exercises" (Arnold Press, Lateral Press, Military Press). So I have to modify the exercises (if a machine doesn't already exist to do this for me) to bend my arms at the elbow and work my shoulders... it is a "pain" but I would rather do that then go back to surgery.
So I posted this really because I thought I saw someone say something about Arnolds book and to whomever that was, thank you for talking about it, because it reminded me that I have it and it is a great reference for workouts!

I see what you are saying Mike, However, If you look at every Muscle Media magazine out there, they all had one thing in common; in shape/beautiful people graced every cover. And in that aspect, you are appealing to people that are completely into their bodies. However, if you have a program that shows me (clinically obese male) turn my body into a thin, healthy, muscular piece of work and all within a 3 month mini series; it would have a profound impact on every (non-perfect) person out there. I still believe that this kind of program would last for a long time.

Body for Life Forum Message by brilliantbrunette (79 posts) at 01:18 AM
hey. i don't know if anyone remembers me. probably not. i used to be around these boards in october, but after 4 weeks of being on the challenge, i gave up. that was the 2nd bfl challenge that i was on and, just like my first challenge, i gave up on the 4th week too. i have some kind of 4 week itch. i'm ready to start again with the bfl challenge, starting on january 2nd.
i've still been exercising and all, but the eating is no where close to where it should be. my weight is still pretty much the same so yeah. anyways, i'm still considering this challenge to be my first challenge, because i don't consider the other ones to "count" because i never actually completed them. so i really want to finish a challenge this time.
just thought i'd kind of re-introduce myself...

and you know what?? The most important thing is that you came back!!! You didn't give up.
Now about this four week itch. . .
Well, your experience on BFL tells you this is a real threat to your success. So you need to be ready for it!! I find keeping a diary (in my case a blog) enormously helpful because I can go back and see why things went wrong. In any event, you know you flake out at week four and, as they say "to be fore-warned is to be forearmed." Let us know when you feel the four week itch coming on. No doubt someone here will be able to help you through it!!
All the very best
P
PS I get the itch around week 6

WOOP! Hey, you guys are pumpin' *clap* me up! (that last part was done with a schwarzenegger accent)... (you went back and read it with the accent, didn't ya..ha)
So hey, seriously here.. I need some help with getting BFL (and myself) together so I can take this stuff with me to school. Paramedic students are among the LEAST healthy people I have ever seen..lol. What are some of your best tips for BFL on the go? I am starting over from square one. I didn't fall off the wagon, I lept willingly and enthusiastically, and then just kept on runnin down the road with a donut hangin out of my mouth... (nice visual, huh?)
I did find out today that I will have 2 WHOLE HOURS after classes to go work out...woooooohoooooo!!!! Imagine.....two hours every day.....with no kids AND no school.... I think I'm getting misty just thinking about it. OK, yeah, the 2 hours are supposed to be for studying, but you can't have everything...maybe study advanced airway techniques while I am on the treadmill???

Like an idiot, the week befor tom, after Christmas, after having taken a "break".... I got on that stupid scale... My measurements are still hanging out in the same area. So why? Why would I pull out that stupid evil piece of metal?
I am suprised though, seriously that my measurements are the same as in week 12, but the scale wieght is up 6LBs...
Well atleast I have had some pretty good workouts this week. Next week should be interesting since we will be outta town.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am going to try really hard to make the right choices this week. I will also be giving thought to setting new goals for the next challenge. I think that's kinda been throwing me off this go around. I didn't have really clear cut goals.
Lol Joe, yes the scale really needs to be run over...
Urs
Body for Life Forum Message by Joe (a.k.a. Onyx) (105 posts) at 01:38 PM
I have come to the determination that scales are nothig more than pure evil. The only purpose they serve is to bring you down, because as ANY BFL"er knows, it is about body composition not weight that makes the difference.
Personally, I have lost inches from my stomach, and gained inches (or parts) in other parts of my body after 4 weeks of this current challenge, but my wieght has stayed the same or gone up (Like the 2 lbs from this morning...)
So we just have to put the scale in as 1, and only 1 of the many tools we need to use to measure our success on the BFL program...
Body for Life Forum Message by Buffy-the-FatLayer-Slayer (11 posts) at 01:52 PM

I am so excited to start the MsFit's Meltdown on Monday and it looks as though many of my BFL friends are doing it too. Just remember, you must register and submit your photo no later than January 2nd. This is a smaller contest than the actual BFL 2006 Challenge, but you can do them both at the same time. Be sure to read the official rules and regulations for the Meltdown on MsFits website. I don't know how to make a link, but copy and paste the address below....
http://www.theelitephysique.com/
Once there, scroll down the page to the Meltdown link for all the info. At last count there were about 20 of us doing it....the more the merrier!
I am soooooo ready to go! How about you???
Oh, and another thing....men are welcome to do this as well!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (8 posts) at 08:34 AM
Drink LOTS of water, more than usual. Try to run early in the morning or VERY late in the evening, morning is preferable. What is the low supposed to be tomorrow? If it's to high, you should probably look for some kind of indoor alternative.
Just my thought based on living in the southern US where it gets VERY hot.

How about an indoor alternative? Running in place, jumping rope (actual or simulated), have a bike? lift the back wheel a little off the ground and ride it. Use your imagination.
Oh new thought....find a very tall building in Melbourne and go climb the stairs.

I am imfamous for self sabotaging my challenges. Either I don't read the signs my body gives me and ease up on my workouts or I just don't eat correctly. Either way, there are a 100 or even 1000 ways to sabotage a challenge. So I figure if we list the ways in which this can be done, we could use reverse psycology on our selves and keep each other motivated! What do you think?
Anyhow in my mind it is a good idea, so here I go:
1) Portion Control (or lack there of)
2) Skipping workouts
3) Not drinking enough water

my reversal is
take a little time off, your body will bounce back quickly upon starting challenge 2.......
we'll see on Sunday when I step on that scale, NOW WON'T WE?

My biggest problem is going out to eat. I do this a lot for my job and it's an environmental type of thing. At home I have no problems.
Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (262 posts) at 10:21 AM
My biggest problem is staying home. At work, my water is within reach. Also my office mate, although not following BFL and is just doing this on his own, is eating 5 - 6 meals per day so whenever he gets up to eat I know it is time for me to eat also. So, my problem is when I am not at work because then I will not usually take the time away from whatever project I am working on outside to eat and drink water. I alwasy tell myself "You have to eat, drink water, etc." and then say "Just one more nail, just one more cut, etc." and before you know it, 2 hours have gone by and I still have not eaten or had anything to drink!

"Destiny is a feeling you have that you know something about yourself nobody else does. The picture you have in your own mind of what you're about will come true. It's a kind of thing you kind of have to keep to your own self, because it's a fragile feeling, and you put it out there, then someone will kill it. It's best to keep that all inside."

That's a GREAT quote. Thanks for putting it up here.
It pretty much describes why I didn't tell anyone about my first completed Challenge and didn't socialize in the gym. (Because on my first attempt at the Challenge many years ago, that's EXACTLY what happened!)
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (206 posts) at 09:51 AM
Well I think thats why people like to come to tracker. Alot of people that aren't familiar with BFL will bash you down when you try to explain it to them and you have to make it a point to finish so you can show and hopefully inspire them after your challenge. Good luck!

Good idea, but there was another post a few days ago that said some other champions, and I want to say they were inspirational champions also, had passed away too. This idea might have a better chance of passing if it involved all of these inspirational people, who followed BFL to change their lives for the better despite overwhelming obstacles.
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (605 posts) at 10:42 AM
Is there a BFL journal out there?
I made my own for my first challenge which worked okay, but I have seen people mentioning they bought one. Was this a "real BFL journal" (like made for BFL challenges) or just ones you put together?
Thanks,
Teresa

A success journal with a bunch of days of inspiration and progress checks. The inspiration is cool but the progress checks you can download from the internet. Do a search on amazon for body for life journal:

I absolutely love my BFL Success Journal, which I got from Borders...there is a message from Bill everyday along with daily success stories with before and after pictures. It's funny how the message always seems to fit what's happening in my life that day. I look forward to waking up each day and filling it out, I take it with me to the Gym and record my workout and feelings about it while they're still fresh...under the food plan I put stars by a meal I really like and add new recipes in the notes... and at the end of Challenge 1 I plan to buy another one!

Teresa, I always used a journal but just didn't like the bulkiness of the hardcover BFL journal so I made my own. It has the ub/lb/meal plan/mindset activities to do for each day, 12-week chart to follow & goal page. I added a measurement/weight progress chart to fill in. I'm going to put in a soft cover 3-ring binder and try it for this challenge. E-mail me if you want a copy (it's in Word format)

I'm with Shauna. I LOVE my BFL Success Journal! It was a great motivational tool for me during challenge 1 and I've got a new one for challenge 2. I envision myself holding 5 or 6 well-loved, used success journals when I reach my long-term goal and having an awesome photo!
